One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

Viking 1962 - The true first edition, first printing and first state edition of 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' by Ken Kesey published by Viking (1962) in the US. All first issue points are present: p. 9, lines 12-13 reads "that fool Red Cross woman"; pp. 85-86 reads "It's the plump Red Cross woman named Gwen-doe-lin, with the blond hair the patients are always arguing about is it real blond or not." Later editions do not feature these lines as Kesey was sued by the 'Red Cross Woman' and had to change the text for all subsequent editions. Included is a custom made clamshell case that will protect the book from any light, and transit damage which looks stunning on the shelf. The clamshell cases's upper cover is sculptured to reflect the artwork of the legendary dust jacket which was designed by Paul Bacon. The clamshell case is hand-crafted. Condition of the book: very good +. Free from any inscriptions, stamps etc. Boards clean and sharp and vibrant with its characteristic colour. The dust jacket is first state with the original price of $4.95 and the Kerouac blurb which later state jackets do not bear. It has some minor chipping to the edges. The wrapper is also protected in acid-free archival mylar. This is a seminal book and is included in the influential best 100 novels of the 1923-2005 period list by TIME magazine. It is one of the defining American novels of the 1960s published amidst the Civil Rights Movement. A book that never loses its value. I will ship the book well protected together with the clamshell case. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

(Fotografia originale)

      S. e., S. l. 1962 - Silver print cm 23 x 19, stampa vintage. Sanchez - Mejorada, Kati Horna y su manera. p. 15. ITA

        Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

New York: Atheneum, 1962. - First edition, first printing. INSCRIBED by Albee on title page. SIGNED by Richard Barr on dedication page; the play is dedicated to him and to the co-producer Clinton Wilder. Fine copy in Near Fine dust jacket that has some wrinkling near spine ends, a small crease near bottom edge of front flap; jacket is now covered in a removable acid-free mylar protector. The inscribee apparently corrected the misspelling of his last name by Albee. Richard Barr had a 50 year career in the New York theater as an actor (with the Orson Welles Mercury Theater), director, and most prominently as a producer. He won his first Tony Award as producer of this play, his second for the first production of Sweeney Todd. He was president of The League of American Theaters and Producers in the 20 years before his death in 1989. From his NY Times obituary: ''He was my mentor and one of my dearest friends,'' Mr. Albee said. ''I shall miss him greatly.'' [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Silent Spring

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1962 I inherited this signed copy of the 1st Edition of Silent Spring from my Mother who was a personal friend of Rachel Carson for a number of years in the Washington DC area until the time of Carson's death. This book is in overall excellent condition and the dust jacket is in very good condition for its age. What makes this book more unique is the signature and its provenance. It's signed Best wishes, Rachel Carson. Most of the signed books just have the author's name. In addition the book belonged to my mother, a friend of Carson's. My mother passed away a number of years ago but gave the book to me and told me about her friendship with the author. My mother wrote her name and address on the inside cover of the book. I can provide a signed letter of provenance about their friendship. This book is great for a collector who would not only like a signed copy of the 1st Edition in good condition but would also like a copy of the book that was owned by a friend of the author.

Toronto: The University of Toronto Press, 1962. First edition, first printing. Not Set. Large octavo. Original buff clothdecoration and titles to upper board and spine in red. With the dust jacket An excellent copy in a rather worn dust jacket. A lovely association copy with the author's signed presentation inscription to the front free endpaper, "With cordial regards to Angus Wilson with memories of a delightful visit from him in Toronto July 1962 Marshall McLuhan" The recipient was the author and sometime academic whose best-known work The Old Men at the Zoo was marvellously dramatised by the BBC in a sadly neglected series in the early 1980s. Wilson met McLuhan through his academic work shortly before the date of this inscription

Set of 20 Issues of Divadlo

Prague: Divadlo (1962-1968) - First Edition. Oblong octavos. Set of 20 issues of the Czech dance and theater journal Divadlo. Profusely illustrated with numerous black-and-white photographs of actors on and off the stage, including the first appearance of Josef Koudelka's photographs in print. Issued by the avant-garde company Divadlo Za Branou, or Theater Beyond the Gate, led by Otomar Krejca, the journal highlighted late twentieth century developments in European performance. Koudelka began his professional photographic career with the company, demonstrating an early proclivity toward modernist aesthetics and abstract forms that he would continue in his renowned later work. Each issue includes articles, interviews, and script excerpts. Text in Czech. Not a complete run of all of his early appearances, but close. Uniformly very good in photo-illustrated wrappers.         A letter from Winston Churchill's close friend and indispensable wartime Chief of Staff, General Lord Hastings Lionel "Pug" Ismay seeking a copy of Churchill's first book less than a month after Churchill's death and in the final year of Ismay's own life Found in a first printing copy Churchill's Frontiers and Wars

London: Eyre & Spottiswoode, 1962. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. Winston Churchill's close friend and indispensable wartime Chief of Staff, "Pug" Ismay, wrote this letter seeking a copy of Churchill's first book less than a month after Churchill's death and in the final year of Ismay's own life. The letter is on Ismay?s letterhead bearing his printed address and telephone number. The typed date is ?17th. February 1965.? The typed text reads ?Could you be an angel and lend me your copy of ?The Story of the Malakand Field Force? as I badly need a quotation for an article that I am writing. If you will send it by registered post I will return it by the same means within three days. Love to you both,? The letter bears Ismay?s autograph salutation, ?My dear Mike?, valediction, ?Y[ours] ? Ever? and is signed with his famous nickname, ?Pug?. The recipient, typed at the foot of the letter, was ?M. Holden-White. Esq.? of ?10, Lowndes Street, Lowndes Square. S.W.1.? Of General Lord Hastings Lionel ?Pug? Ismay, 1st Baron Ismay (1887-1965), Churchill said: ?We became hand in glove and much more?? (Churchill, The Gathering Storm) When Churchill became Prime Minister in May 1940, he also assumed appointment as Minister of Defence. Ismay served Churchill as Chief of Staff in that capacity, and in other roles, including Deputy Secretary to the War Cabinet, for Churchill?s entire wartime premiership. ?Shrewd, resilient, accessible, emollient in diplomacy but of an unbreachable integrity?, Ismay ??commanded the prime minister's absolute trust. He was the essential link with the chiefs of staff... Difficult allies respected him as much as did difficult colleagues.? (ODNB) Ismay was promoted Lieutenant-General in 1942 and General in 1944, and made Baron in 1947. When Churchill?s second premiership began in October 1951, Ismay was first appointed Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations and, swiftly thereafter, Secretary-General of NATO, a post he held until his retirement in 1957. In late 1960, Ismay published his own Memoirs, which include a prefatory Tribute from Churchill ?to the signal services which Lord Ismay has rendered to our country, and to the free world, in peace and war.? It is poignant that Ismay sought Churchill?s first published book so soon after the death of his friend and so near to his own. Like Churchill, Ismay was educated at Sandhurst and saw early service as a cavalry officer in India. Although, unlike Churchill, Ismay did not leave soldiering for politics, even his early career was deeply shaped by his future Prime Minister and patron. In his Memoirs, Ismay wrote that ?As a young officer in India in 1910, Mr. Winston Churchill, whom I had never met, and, as it then seemed, was unlikely ever to meet, exercised a decisive influence on my future.? Despite shock that ?anyone who had started so brilliantly should have thrown it all up and gone into Parliament? Ismay was critically inspired by Churchill?s intrepid early accomplishments. Ismay felt ?on the whole, I could not do better than try to emulate the example of his early years.? Of course, the earliest of these early years are chronicled in Churchill?s first published book, The Story of the Malakand Field Force, which recounts Churchill's experiences while attached to Sir Bindon Blood's punitive expedition on the Northwest Frontier of India in 1897. The edition of the text most readily available in February 1965 was Frontiers and Wars. Published in 1962, this is a single volume abridgement of Churchill's first four war books, including The Story of the Malakand Field Force. This is not a compellingly well-preserved first printing copy of Frontiers and Wars, showing sunning, soiling, and wear. But it is the copy in which Lord Ismay?s letter was found and it seems quite plausible that this was the very copy lent in response to his request. Hence we offer them together and encourage the future owner to keep them thus. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A274.1.a, Woods/ICS A142/1(a.1), Langworth p.340.

        THE COLOSSUS AND OTHER POEMS

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1962. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. 84 p. First American Edition. With this startling, exhilarating book of poems, Sylvia Plath (1932-63) burst into literature with spectacular force. In such classics as "The Beekeeper's Daughter," "The Disquieting Muses," "I Want, I Want," and "Full Fathom Five," she writes about sows and skeletons, fathers and suicides, about the noisy imperatives of life and the chilly hunger for death. This copy belonged to Anne Wilder, the confidant and lover of poet Anne Sexton, with Wilder's signature to the front flyleaf. The two engaged in a passionate affair and a prolific correspondence (Wilder is identified as "Anne Clarke" in Anne Sexton: A Self-Portrait in Letters), which reveals much about Sexton's work and her psychological struggles during the mid- to late 1960s. Like Plath, with whom she shared a brief but intense friendship while attending Robert Lowell's graduate writing seminar at Boston University, Sexton was among the finest confessional poets of her generation. The two remained inextricably linked by their work, which explores the darker, feminine aspects of the American experience, and by the nature of their untimely deaths. Octavo. Original green cloth binding. A very fine copy in a fine dust jacket.

Some Immortal Hours. A Rhapsody of the Celtic Twilight Wrought in Word and Water Colour.

1962 - Facsimile of the author's manuscript, with pictorial title page, large initial and many small initials and decorative devices, hand coloured. Seven leaves in total, each measuring 35.5 x 25.4cm. [One of eight copies for presentation of a total edition of 20]. Housed in a good quality modern folding case, with a leather lettering piece on the front cover.London, John Murray - ?A good book from Mr. Murray is the blessed life blood of a Master Spirit? Inscribed by the author at the foot of the last page of text to Evelyn Waugh ?Evelyn with love from John B? The text is a loving and well-achieved pastiche ofthe Celtic Twilight and the entire Arts and Crafts movement. Deirdre O'Betjeman describes her visit to Fiona MacLeod (thealter egoof William Sharp) in West Hampstead, alighting from the Metropolitan line and passing the wonderful Voysey house at the corner of Kidderpore Avenue (?a goodly and stout stone dwelling for his old father the theist on Platt's Lane, but that is another tale & must await the Saxon stave of these my chronicles?). Deirdre is bent upon a sort of Celtic cultural embassy ?The mission of missions to Fiona MacLeod here on his hill top Hampstead Cairn?: ?Can words of mine however precious, write with quill however bravely sharpened on paper however finely laid, bring back the magic of that mystic meeting of Celt & Celt in the twilight of a Hampstead drawing room . Lang, lang did we talk i' the gloaming as the smoke steepled out the chimney o' the neighbouring house of Edmund Gosse & the sun sunk low o'er the hoose of Arthur Waugh, & shades of even drave his two young sons Alexander & Evelyn indoors frae their games in the garden. Fornent us in Frognal the Spenders were putting their bairns tae bed.? A few soft marginal creases, otherwise a fine copy of one of the most entertaining of 20th century literary rarities, with an immaculate provenance. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
