        Jasenovac Death Camp Memories

Zagreb: Private, 1962. Typewritten. Good. No Binding. 1st Edition. Croatian text. "It's been three years that I got out of the Jasenovac camp but the horror and terror is not left nor will I ever leave...only now dare to talk about it and in my old shoes my notes on what I finely printed there hid. First few lines from rare typed manuscript of WW2 Croatian concentration camp, 32pps w/ front letter dated 1962 and signed by Svarc whose text described unspeakable horrors. This was sent to Dr. Robert Albahary of Princeton, noted scholar and Jewish fugitive with his family from this area in Yugoslavia. He died in 2009. Wikipedia: Jasenovac concentration camp was an extermination camp established in Slavonia by the authorities of the Independent State of Croatia during World War II. The camp was established by the governing Ustase regime and not operated by Nazi Germany and was one of the largest concentration camps in Europe. From August 1941 it existed in marshland at the confluence of the Sava and Una rivers near the village of Jasenovac. It was dismantled in April 1945. It was "notorious for its barbaric practices and the large number of victims. In Jasenovac, the majority of victims were ethnic Serbs, whom the Ustase wanted to remove along with the Jews, anti-fascist or dissident Croatians, and Romanies. Jasenovac was a complex of five subcamps spread over 210 km2 (81 sq mi) on both banks of the Sava and Una rivers. The largest camp was the "Brickworks" camp at Jasenovac, about 100 km (62 mi) southeast of Zagreb. The overall complex included the Stara Gradiska sub-camp, the killing grounds across the Sava river at Donja Gradina, five work farms, and the Ustica gypsy camp. During and since World War II, there has been much debate and controversy regarding the number of victims killed at the Jasenovac concentration camp complex in its more than three-and-a-half years of operation. This is a rare piece of survival memories about this death camp that has been previously published. Croatian text on onion skin tissue paper..

        SILENT SPRING

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1962. First Edition. Hardcover. Bump to bottom right corner, otherwise Fine in a Near Fine dustwrapper with moderate edgewear. This book on the effects of pesticides is a landmark in environmental writing inspiring the movement that led to the banning of DDT and raising awareness of the important connection between humans and their environment which hitherto had been generally taken for granted. This copy is INSCRIBED "To Nell Mae/with best wishes" and SIGNED by the author on the half-title page. Signed copies of this important book, one of the most important of the century by many standards, are rather scarce as, ironically, Carson died of cancer less than two years after its publication.

One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich].

Flegon Press London 1962 - Octavo (24.2 x 16 cm). 67 pp., original printed wrappers.; owner's neat highlighting in pen to first 8 pp., wrappers slightly soiled. Fine example of the rare first "pirate" edition published abroad. The plot of the Solzhenitsin's very first published novel is set in a Soviet labour camp in the 1950s and describes a single day of an ordinary prisoner, Ivan Denisovich Shukhov. After more than half a century since its publication the significance and influence of the deceptively simple story remains unsurpassed. The novel was specifically mentioned in the Nobel Prize presentation speech when the Nobel Committee awarded Solzhenitsyn the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1970. The novel first appeared in print in November 1962 in the Soviet literary magazine Noviy Mir (New World). It was an extraordinary event in Soviet literary history since never before had an account of Stalinist repression been openly distributed. The editor of Novy Mir, Aleksandr Tvardovskiy, wrote in a short introduction for the issue, titled "Instead of a Foreword": The author chose an ordinary day in the life of a labour camp prisoner from a reveille until lock up. Still, this "ordinary" day can't but touch the hearts of the readers and let them feel overwhelming sorrow and pain for the fate of the people, who become so close and familiar through the pages of this novel. Even though the characters are fictional the novel has a very personal feel. Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn (1918-2008) had first-hand experience of the Gulag, having been imprisoned from 1945 to 1953 for writing a derogatory comment in a letter to a fellow officer about the conduct of the war by Joseph Stalin, whom he called "the whiskered one".
