        The Tin Drum.

London: Secker and Warburg, 1962. First British edition of the author's first novel. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed and dated in 1986 by Gunter Grass on the half title page. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. With a signed letter from Gunter Grass' secretary. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. "When Günter Grass published "The Tin Drum" in 1959 it was as if German literature had been granted a new beginning after decades of linguistic and moral destruction. Within the pages of this, his first novel, Grass recreated the lost world from which his creativity sprang, Danzig, his home town, as he remembered it from the years of his infancy before the catastrophe of war. Here he comes to grips with the enormous task of reviewing contemporary history by recalling the disavowed and the forgotten: the victims, losers and lies that people wanted to forget because they had once believed in them. At the same time the novel breaks the bounds of realism by having as its protagonist and narrator an infernal intelligence in the body of a three-year-old, a monster who overpowers the fellow human beings he approaches with the help of a toy drum. The unforgettable Oskar Matzerath is an intellectual whose critical approach is childishness, a one-man carnival, dadaism in action in everyday German provincial life just when this small world becomes involved in the insanity of the great world surrounding it. It is not too audacious to assume that "The Tin Drum" will become one of the enduring literary works of the 20th century" (The Swedish Academy).

Epizod iz sovremennoi bor'by idei [i.e. An Episode from the Contemporary Fight of Ideas] // Novy Mir. ?9. 1964. Pp. 231-239. 25x16 cm. In owner's contemporary cloth binding. Slightly rubbed, damp stain on the top side of the last page, a few owner's markings (number and year of issue). Otherwise a clean very good or better copy. Extremely rare. This is a remarkable collection of five first Solzhenitsyn's publications including his first ever publication of the famous One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. Writer's publications accompanied by two reviews in the end of the convolute. The short period when Solzhenitsyn was allowed to print his works in Russia came after chief editor of Novy Mir Alexander Tvardovsky (1910-1971) showed a novel by him to Khruchev and suprisingly it met his approval. Everything that was printed in Novy Mir by Solzhenitsyn is bound in this book. By March of 1963 Alexander Solzhenitsyn lost Khrushchev's favor and after Brezhnev came to power he completely lost an ability to publish his works legally. Soviet press started anti-Solzhenitsyn campaign after In the First Circle and Cancer Ward were published in the West in 1968. KGB created a special unit working against the writer. In 1974 authorities ordered to remove all issues of Novy Mir with Solzhenitsyn's publications: ?11 from 1963 (One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich), ?1 from 1963 (Matryona's Place), ?7 from 1963 (For the Good of the Cause), ?1 from 1966 (Zakhar-Kalita). Magazines were destroyed by cutting into little pieces which was confirmed by a special report signed by librarians who were actually destroying them. WorldCat locates Novy Mir. ?7 from 1963 (For the Good of the Cause) in one library (California State Library) and Novy Mir. ?11 from 1962 (One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich) in five Northern American libraries. Other issues were not found. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Dialogo entre Venus y Priapo

La Arboleda Perdida, 1962. Brossura (wrappers) Un disegno originale dell'Autore in copertina (ogni volume reca un disegno diverso). Stampato in occasione del sessantesimo compleanno del poeta. 8vo. pp. 14. Ottimo (Fine). (Oh luz!. El mundo canta. / Cae la luna.. El viento..)»

        The Spy Who Loved Me.

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1962. Octavo. Original dark grey boards, titles to spine in silver, dagger design to front board in silver and blind, red endpapers. With the dust jacket. A little spotting to edge of text block, faint tape marks to endpapers. A very good copy in the bright jacket with tape marks to verso. First edition, first impression. In many ways this is one of the most ambitious of Fleming's Bond books. It purports to be the first hand testimony of a 23 year old Canadian woman with whom Bond has an ill-fated affair. In time-honoured literary tradition Fleming claims to have been sent Michel's manuscript account of which he is merely the editor. Michel therefore gets a spurious credit as co-author on the title page. This novel is the only Bond book to be written in the first person.
