Memorias De La Sierra Maestra (Signed)

Habana: Editorial Tierra Nueva, 1960 32mo, green and red pictorial wraps with a silhouette of a palm tree. 172 pp. Signed by the author on the title page: "Saludos de José Pardo Llada". Patronato del Libro Popular. Primera Serie, Volumen I. An eyewitness account of the guerrilla war waged in the Sierra Maestra with the revolutionary forces before the taking of Havana. Pardo Llada was a radio announcer -- at one time the most popular announcer in Cuba -- in the 1940s who was critical of Grau's government. In 1950, he was elected to the House of Representatives and over the next several years formed a deep personal friendship with Fidel Castro, who would visit his home nearly daily (and once drove Pardo Llada's wife to the hospital to deliver a child). When Batista took power in 1952, Pardo Llada was suspended from broadcasting 42 times and was imprisoned on a number of occasions. In 1958, he joined the revolutionary forces in Sierra Maestra and fought alongside Castro, Che Guevara, Camillo Cienfuegos and others. However Pardo Llada quickly went from ardent supporter (he waived his copyright and donated all proceeds from the publication of this book to the agrarian reform efforts) to a disillusioned exile: in 1961 he grew disappointed with the communist leanings of the government and defected to Columbia while Castro denounced him as a traitor, declaring in a speech that he was the sort of man who couldn't see past the end of his nose and would be mistaken his entire life until he eventually committed suicide via sleeping pills. Pardo Llada died in 2009 at the age of 86 (of natural causes). Front wrap nearly completely detached, previous owner's signatures on front wrap and ffep, wraps heavily soiled and foxed, also heavy foxing to endpapers and final pages of text. Scarce.

Die Schützentaler und Schützenmedaillen der Schweiz. Die Schützenjetons der Schweiz, 2 Bände: 2 Bde [Gebundene Ausgabe] Jürg Richter (Autor)

Battenberg Gietl, 1960. This is a bound typescript of the account originally written by Wilhelmina de Fremery to share her adventure with her family in Holland. It was originally written in Dutch and later translated into English by her brother, Henri M. Suermondr "...to enable the American-born children to read it with understanding, but no pictures were included in that version." His text was used in this verbatim copy with the addition of reproductions of the original photographs.

Architectural Designs for All Souls College, Oxford with an Explanation of Designs for All Souls College, Oxford.

Portfolio case in navy blue cloth over stiff boards (530x800mm) containing 6 plates (505x755mm) being prints of Hawksmoor's designs for All Soul's College, Oxford. Title printed on grey card with navy blue lettering and decorative border and pasted onto the upper cover of the portfolio. A blue ribbon ties the upper and lower boards together. The prints, which are in excellent condition show: 1. General Plan (undated, engraved by M. Van der Gucht); 2. Elevation of the East Range (1717, engraved by C. DuBosc); 3. Chapel and Refectory, plan and elevation (1717, engraved by H. Hulsbergh); 4. Portico from Great Gate to Hall and Chapel, plan and elevation (1721); 5. Elevation of South Front (1721); 6. Cloister in North Court, plan and elevation (1721, engraved by M. van der Gucht). Issued with the portfolio is a booklet, "Explanation of Designs for All Souls College, Oxford by Nicholas Hawksmoor" in grey card cover with title printed in red with printed decorative border, 248x155mm, pp.8. The booklet which is sewn at the spine, is in fine condition. The blue portfolio case is in good condition but with bumping resulting in creases to the top left and bottom right. There is rubbing to the foot of the spine resulting in a slight tear. There is some weakness to the top flap attached to the lower board but the portfolio is complete and strong. In addition, and not issued with the portfolio, we are offering a poster from an Arts Council Exhibition thought to be in 1962 (although it does not say so on the poster) devoted to Hawksmoor. This was a show of models, drawings and photographs organised in conjunction with the Hawksmoor Committee's campaign for preserving Christ Church Spitalfields and St Anne's Limehouse. The poster, on brown paper, shows a stylised photographic image of the spire of Christ Church, Spitalfields. There is crease across the top of the poster, some small tears to the edges and drawing pin marks at the corners but all these would be hidden in mounting and framing. It is a rather lovely early 1960s period piece.

        Bone Thoughts

New Haven: Yale University Press. 1960. First. First edition, hardcover issue. Introduction by Dudley Fitts. Fine in a rubbed, very good dustwrapper with a short tear. Inscribed by the author to Philip Roth and his first wife, Margaret Martinson: "To Phil and Maggie who said just the best thing about it. George." Laid in is a holiday card, handmade by Starbuck to the Roths, with a sonnet in the shape of a Christmas tree typed into it, with a personal note about his impending divorce, his plans for teaching, and his remark "Great about the novel," presumably referring to Roth's first novel, Goodbye Columbus winning the National Book Award. With original envelope dated December, 1960. Starbuck's first book, and the 56th selection in The Yale Younger Poets Series. .

Critique de la raison dialectique, (Critique of Dialectical Reason)

Paris: Librairie Gallimard, 1960. First edition. Near Fine. SARTRE, Jean Paul. Critique de la raison dialectique, (Critique of Dialectical Reason). Librairie Gallimard, Paris 1960 - Half-title + TP + Dedication page + [9]-755 + [727] = Table des Matieres + 1 leaf, Octavo. First Edition. Along with Being and Nothingness (1943) and Existentialism is a Humanism (1946), this is the third of SartreÂ’s three major philosophical works by the Nobel laureate and dominant intellectual force in the cultural life of mid-century France. A rare, unopened first printing (#55 of 85 printed on special vellum) in beautiful condition. The Critique of Dialectical Reason continued the Existential Marxism Sartre had begun, after much influence from Merleau-Ponty, in a 1957 essay, “Search for Method.” Scholars dispute whether Critique is a continuation of or a departure from the existentialism Sartre offers in Being and Nothingness. Regardless, both of these major works by Sartre are necessary for a full understanding of his philosophy. CONDITION: Original paper covers. Unopened. One of 85 (#55) on special vellum paper. A near fine copy of a delicate and fragile work. PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST.

        TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD

Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott, 1960. First edition, fourth impression, as stated on the copyright page. Octavo, 296 pages. The book is tight and sound and has the following faults and characteristics: The endpapers, half-title and edges show some foxing and browning. The book is bound in half brown paper with a mint-green cloth spine, with the spine titling in brown. The tips of the spine, where not protected by the dustjacket, are very lightly faded. The dustjacket shows considerable rubbing, a short tear and a line of waterstaining at the top of the rear panel, as well as small chips and wear at the spine ends. At the time of the fourth printing, the Pulitzer prize sticker on later impressions had not yet been applied. The original price of $3.95 is present, as is the "fourth printing" notation next to it. Finally, the reverse of the dustjacket shows considerable browning, particularly at the folds. See the additional photographs, which are of this book.

        To Kill a Mockingbird

Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott Company, 1960 Later printing in a seventh printing dust jacket. Publisher's teal boards and pale green cloth, lettered in teal; pictorial black and maroon dust jacket, with a tree illustration to the front panel, lettered in green, black and white. Near fine, with some faint toning to the spine, a hint of wear to the extremities, else bright and fresh; price-clipped dust jacket, with a touch of light rubbing to the extremities, a few minor nicks to the spine ends, bright spine, clean panels. A lovely copy. To Kill a Mockingbird is a classic Southern Gothic novel that tells the story of protagonist Scout Finch, who is coming of age in the fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama, during the Great Depression. Along with her brother Jem, Scout watches as her father Atticus defends an African-American man who has been falsely accused of raping a white woman during the height of Jim Crow Era racial inequality. Despite its controversial and emotional themes, To Kill a Mockingbird is beloved as a warm and entertaining bildungsroman; Harper Lee loosely based the plot on an event she witnessed as a child in her hometown of Monroeville, Alabama and many of the characters were inspired by her friends, family and neighbors, infusing the novel with the author's sentimental memories of her childhood in the American South. To Kill a Mockingbird was adapted into a film of the same name in 1962 starring Gregory Peck and Mary Badham.. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

Memorias De La Sierra Maestra (Signed)

Editorial Tierra Nueva, Habana 1960 - 32mo, green and red pictorial wraps with a silhouette of a palm tree. 172 pp. Signed by the author on the title page: "Saludos de JosàPardo Llada". Scarce.         The Strategy of Conflict.

Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 1960. First edition of this work that pioneered the study of bargaining and strategic behavior. Octavo, original yellow cloth. Inscribed by Thomas Schelling on the title page. Near fine in a very good dust jacket that has some chipping and wear to the extremities. Rare in the original dust jacket and inscribed. "Against the backdrop of the nuclear arms race in the late 1950s, Thomas Schelling's book The Strategy of Conflict set forth his vision of game theory as a unifying framework for the social sciences. Schelling showed that a party can strengthen its position by overtly worsening its own options, that the capability to retaliate can be more useful than the ability to resist an attack, and that uncertain retaliation is more credible and more efficient than certain retaliation. These insights have proven to be of great relevance for conflict resolution and efforts to avoid war. Schelling's work prompted new developments in game theory and accelerated its use and application throughout the social sciences. Notably, his analysis of strategic commitments has explained a wide range of phenomena, from the competitive strategies of firms to the delegation of political decision power" (The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences). Chosen as one of the hundred books most influential since the War by the Times Literary Supplement. In 2005, Schelling shared the Nobel Prize in Economics for "having enhanced our understanding of conflict and cooperation through game-theory analysis."
