1st Print 1st Issue A7a 1.1 Goldfinger Ian Fleming Jonathan Cape 1959 UK HB The Blurb 'You're stale, tired of having to be tough. You want a change. You've seen too much death' In Fleming's seventh 007 novel, a private assignment sets Bond on the trail of an enigmatic criminal mastermind - Auric Goldfinger. But greed and power have created a deadly opponent who will stop at nothing to get what he wants. The Book This is a Rare 1st Printing of the 1st UK hardback edition published by Jonathan Cape in 1959. Presented here as the rare and most desirable 1st issue/1st state with the extra detail to skull blindstamp on front board as described in Gilbert. A7a 1.1 A Fine sharp and tight book with clean bright pages free of foxing and inscriptions. A little knock to head with resultant creasing. One minor bump to corner. For some reason, this 1st state of the book always seems to turn up in a rather dishevelled state, rare to find a copy such as this. In the Near Fine unclipped wrapper with the price of 15s that has some minor wear and slight markings to spine. A little toned to spine and edges as usual. A very smart example in the bright and clean 1st issue wrapper with the blurb for Goldfinger to front flap. We have tons of other Fine Ian Fleming books available. If you cannot see what you are looking for, please ask, as we have an extensive catalogue that is unlisted. ♻️ We care about the environment and all our packaging is either biodegradable, (even our bubblewrap), recyclable, or recycled. ♻️ If you would prefer either type of packaging, please do let us know when you order … [Click Below for Full Description]

BELLOW, Saul
Viking Press, New York, 1959. First edition, first issue. Fine in just about fine dustwrapper. A curious and possibly unique variant or anomaly, with the text block clearly bound directly to the front board, presumably no other preliminary matter was gathered with the rest of the text block, it is intriguing to conjecture whether this constitutes a state or issue point, with this seemingly representing a very early copy (a notion reinforced because the text block has the first issue topstain). Bellow's seriocomic novel of an eccentric American millionaire on a quest in Africa. A very nice copy, very scarce in this condition in what is likely a rare or unique state. Everett, Hugh; Pugh, George E. WITH Osborne, M. F. Maury WITH Malcolm, D. G., Rosenboom, J. H., Clark C. E. WITH Dantzig, G. B.
Operations Research Society of America, 1959. FIRST EDITION, full volume inclusive of many important papers: one of only two declassified papers written by the physicist Hugh Everett during his long tenure "analyzing the cost-benefits of global and limited nuclear warfare," for the top secret Weapons Systems Evaluation Group [WESG], a sort of Pentagon think tank which generated analysis for the Joint Chiefs of Staff (Aftergood, Secrecy 2010 quoting Peter Byrne). Also included in this volume are Osborne's first two papers on Brownian motion in the stock market; Dantzig's application of linear programming to the 'traveling-salesman problem; and Malcolm on a pioneering technique for project planning and monitoring commonly called PERT. EVERETT: After Hugh Everett's "now celebrated theory of multiple universes [was published and] met scorn, [he] abandoned the world of academic physics [and] turned to top secret military research" (Byrne, Scientific American, 2008). All save for two of his papers have been classified, this being one of the two. Pugh later characterized their work specifically as having "rationalizing and promoted military strategies that were operative for decades" (ibid). The purpose of the paper offered here was "to provide a simple way of evaluating the consequences of radioactive fallout from a large nuclear-weapon campaign without resorting to detailed map studies... A method of optimally distributing weapons among large areas in order to maximize radiation casualties is deduced on the basis of the formulas, and curves are exhibited expressing the casual … [Click Below for Full Description]

Knowles, John
London: Secker & Warburg, 1959. First edition. Near Fine/Very Good +. Original green publisher's cloth binding, Near Fine on account of some foxing to the text block. In a VG+ first state jacket, with the 15s. net price on the front flap; jacket with some toning to spine and wear to extremities, most noticeably to the foot of spine. Inscribed by the author on the title page: "To Brad, whose rotobroiled lobster carried me through the first chapters, here it all is from his Hells Kitchen buddy, Jack." The recipient, Bradford Dillman, the son of an E.F. Hutton stockbroker, was Knowles' roommate at Yale and after. Following college, the two shared an apartment in Hell's Kitchen, New York, each pursuing his own creative career. While Knowles set to work on what would become his masterpiece, A Separate Peace, Dillman struggled to find acting jobs despite his parents' disapproval. Miraculously, both accomplished their goals: Dillman became a successful Broadway and Hollywood actor. Clearly, Knowles' prep school and Ivy League background shaped his fiction; it was something the young men had in common, as Dillman's youth led him to take on specific character types, earning him notoriety "as an actor of imposing stature as the bossy, over-ebullient, and immature mama's boy" (Weiler). An exceptional association to someone who experiences and input shaped this classic novel. Knowles drew on his own experiences at a New England boarding school in order to write this haunting story about the friendship between Gene and Finny. Effectively polar opposites and yet fiercely devoted … [Click Below for Full Description]

STAFFORD, William, Carolyn Kizer)
Portland Art Museum, Portland, 1959. Portfolio. Eight gatefold pamphlets, each made from folio sheets folded twice to form eight pages. All housed in an envelope hand labeled "Eight Northwest Poets" along with each poet's name. Near fine with very light toning and a chip to the corner of one pamphlet (Stafford) in a very good envelope toned and chipped at the corners. A series of eight matched portfolios published by the Portland Art Museum for the Northwest Poetry Meeting on July 9-12, 1959 and held in connection with an art exhibit the following week. Each pamphlet paired a poet with a painter or sculptor (many of whom were important Northwest artists) who provided a cover image for each pamphlet. The most notable pamphlet comes from William Stafford and is one of his earliest separately published items, a collection of seven poems with accompanying art by Sally Haley, that predates his first professionally published book by a year. Also included are the first separately published works of Richard Hugo and Carolyn Kizer with art from Louise Bunce and Hilda Morris respectively. Additional contributors include poets John Haislip, Carol Hall, Kenneth O. Hanson, Robert Huff, and David Wagoner; and artists Margaret Tompkins, James McGarrell, Milton Wilson, Tony Mellara, and William Ivey. While individual issues from this important portfolio appear on the market, complete sets are rare with only four sets listed on *OCLC*. [Attributes: First Edition]

J.R.R. Tolkien
Used with wear and tear. Allen and Unwin. A lovely 1959 set, Impressions 8, 6, 4 1959, 59, 58 with uniform wear to books and jacket indicating they've been kept together. These early impressions are increasingly hard to find without much more wear and tear, especially to the dust jackets. This is a particularly outstanding set, jacket spines are tanned, but have suffered very little paper damage compare to other sets this age we have sold before. Books have no serious flaws. They do have the owner bookplate to each volume, but this does not detract from the value in our expert opinion. Ideally collectors want the early printing set they can find, closest to 1,1,1. They did not sell them formally as sets until 1956. You would buy them individually and you often see mixed impressions sets in the 50's and miss-matched jackets. This was the way they were sold. By the 1960's they were selling more sets and fans knew to keep them in very good condition, 50's sets were still being read and abused. We rarely get sets this nice for the age, don't delay buy it today. Please note, due to a high percentage of fake orders from fake accounts, if you have less than 10 Feedback payment must be made immediately by Pay Pal or other arrangements confirmed by us, immediately. You will be sent a message, if there is no reply, the order will be cancelled and your account blocked from future purchase. Thank you for your understanding. Fleming, Ian
Jonathan Cape, London, 1959. First issue, first state, with all points called for by Gilbert. A Fine book in an unclipped Near Fine jacket, with the spine a bit toned and offsetting to rear panel and top edges of flaps. Gentle wear to jacket extremities. A pleasing copy of this classic Bond novel. The seventh book in Ian Fleming's internationally acclaimed James Bond series, Goldfinger was received more positively than its predecessor, Dr. No, and was heralded as "a superlative thriller from our foremost literary magician" (New York Herald Tribune). While following Auric Goldfinger, a wealthy investor in the gold trade with ties to the Soviet counterintelligence agency, Bond is pulled into a malicious plot to infiltrate and steal the gold of Fort Knox. His efforts to thwart Goldfinger are assisted by Tilly Masterton, who seeks retribution for her murdered sister, and together they fight Goldfinger and his Korean factotum, Oddjob. In this novel, the Bond character was more fully developed and shown, with symbolic undertones, to represent Saint George, a prominent crusading saint in Catholicism. Fleming used American gold tycoon, Charles W. Engelhard Jr., as the inspiration for his Goldfinger character, one of his best villains. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. Peter Grant, Reg Hall, and Mervyn Plunkett, (Editors)
London: Reg Hall, 1959. RARE. Only 4 numbers published during the course of 1959, still an influential and useful source in the early heydays of the folk music revival in England. Overall Near Fine, the summer issue with bottom corners creased, two of the four numbers with "return to Pete" in red ink front covers. Laid in a 4 page handwritten letter from Reg Hall, editor and publisher of Ethnic, to Irwin Silber, editor of the highly influential Sing Out ! A Folk Song Magazine, which he co-founded with Pete Seeger, and for which he served as editor from 1951 to 1967. Silber also founded Oak Publications. In the letter, which begins " Dear Mr. Silber, Thank you for your letter. I think it would be extremely important to us both to exchange copies of our magazines and I have entered your address in our files". Hall goes on to talk about Ethnic's editorial viewpoint, apologizes for a misunderstanding over his reference to and use of the term "hootenanny", requests comments and criticisms, discusses British traditional singers, and offers his hospitality and advice on "who to see and hear and contact" for anybody coming to England. " In an aggressive style, Ethnic championed the collection and study of authentic traditional style and repertoire in contradistinction to what its editors saw as a burgeoning revival movement based on false principles, little knowledge, and cosy middle-class fashion. The magazine included several important articles based on first-hand experience (such as one on May Day at Padstow in issue number three, and several on particular singers and musicians) … [Click Below for Full Description]
