TURING, Sara.
Cambridge: W. Heffer & Sons, Ltd, , 1959. Octavo. Original pale grey cloth, spine and front cover lettered in green. With the dust jacket. Photographic portrait frontispiece and 6 plates. A fine copy in the somewhat rubbed and marked jacket, spine sunned. First edition, first impression, of this biography and memorial volume written by the mother of the great computer science pioneer. Uncommon, especially so in the jacket, and apparently issued in an edition of as little as 500 copies, it is an interesting work which strives to establish Turing's credentials without reference to his then still-classified war work. Mrs Turing maintained that her son's death was an accident, the result of careless handling of chemicals when preparing "non-poisonous weed-killer, and sink-cleaner" at home, rather than the inquest's verdict of suicide.

New York, Simon & Schuster, 1959. First Edition. First Impression. Hardback. A stunning copy, by far the best we've had and possibly the best we've seen. An index card signed by Bloch is laid in. A classic work of horror fiction, and the basis for the fine Hitchcock film. A lovely copy, a highlight of modern first edition collecting and an rare opportunity. The block is toned, as is common. There is a little rubbing to the jacket at the spine tips, and the boards are a touch toned. One neat, tiny closed tear to the fold - barely visible. Cover art by Tony Palladino [7439, Hyraxia Books].All items will be packed in bubble-wrap and either a cardboard book-wrap or a box where appropriate. Items over £200 will be shipped fully tracked, insured and will require a signature. If you'd like this service on cheaper items please utilise the expedited shipping. Robert Frank
Grove Press. Cloth. A solid, very respectable copy of the 1959 1st American edition of this towering achievement in post-War documentary photography. Tight and Near Fine to Fine (legitimately approaching Fine) in its dark cloth, with bright, completely unrubbed gilt-titling along the spine and an immaculate interior, with no writing or other markings of any kind. The dustjacket, while presentable and crisp, does show a number of pieces of clear tape carefully applied along the edges as reinforcement. Where there's a closed tear at a panel edge, there's likely a discreet piece of scotch tape to keep it from opening. Beyond this, there's a tiny bit of chipping to the rear panel's lower-edge and at the foot of the spine. In spite of all this, we grade the pictorial dustjacket a solid VG-. Oblong octavo, the Introduction by a prophetic Jack Kerouac, who was at the height of his powers as this book was originally being introduced to an American audience. One of the great triumphs for Barney Rosset and his Grove Press, showcasing one iconic black-and-white photograph after another. Near Fine / Very Good -. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]

Toklas thanks him for scarves delivered to her by young friends: "Well in spite of the disorder and my dishevelled state -- we had a nice talk." She tells him to save his pennies to come to Paris to visit instead of giving "extravagant gifts to old ladies! I went to lunch with Jo Barry, he was enthusiastic about the scarf. Is it Russian or Polish, he asked. I showed him the mark 'Pure wool 100% Sacks-Fifth-Avenue [sic]. 'Oh' said Jo. New York is the capital of Poland and Russia!'" SIGNED "Alice." WAUGH, Evelyn
n.p.: (4 December 1959). Hoover, Herbert
Henry Regnery Company 1959-61, Chicago. First edition of each volume in President Hoover's multi-volume history of the Commission for Relief in Belgium, the world's first international relief agency. Octavo, original cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author in each volume, "To Dr. A.A. Sallquist the good wishes of Herbert Hoover." Fine in near fine dust jackets. An uncommon set, signed and inscribed. Hoover's philanthropic and government work during the First World War confirmed his progressive beliefs and brought him wide public notice at home and abroad. Serving as head of the Commission for the Relief in Belgium (CRB), as President Wilson's U.S. Food Administrator (1917-19) in charge of voluntary rationing, and director general of the American Relief Administration in Europe (1919-20) made him such a popular figure that both parties courted him as a presidential nominee in 1920. Refusing to run for the presidency, Hoover served as secretary of commerce in the administrations of Presidents Harding and Coolidge, transforming that department between 1921 and 1928 into one of the most important and well-publicized federal departments. As commerce secretary he encouraged and helped to develop some of the most advanced economic theories about business cycles and industrial standardization, promoted government regulation of the nascent radio and aviation industries, and supported federal supervision of foreign loans" (ANB). TURING, Sara.
Cambridge: W. Heffer & Sons, Ltd, 1959. Octavo. Original pale grey cloth, spine and front cover lettered in green. With the dust jacket. A fine copy in the somewhat rubbed and marked jacket, spine sunned. Photographic portrait frontispiece and 6 plates. Palmer, Raymond A. & Mahaffey Bea (editors): Ray Bradbury, Eric Frank Russell, A.E. Van Vogt, Richard S. Shaver, Fredric Brown, Poul Anderson, Gordon R. Dickson, Robert Bloch, Mack Reynolds, Theodore Sturgeon, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Fritz Leiber, Others
Evanston, IL: Clark Publishing Company / Palmer Publications, Inc. 1st Editions 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952. 1953, 1955, 1959, 1957. ----------This heavy set will require NO additional shipping charges for standard shipping for a US or Canadian order, overseas orders will require a shipping charge DRAMATICALLY LESS than actual postage (inquire). 43 science fiction pulp magazines: 34 digest size (November 1949 to September 1955) , and 9 pulp size (November 1955 to May 1957). The magazine continued beyond May 1957, variously titled Other Worlds, and Flying Saucers from Other Worlds: none of those later volumes are included here. From October 1953 to March 1955, the magazine changed its name from Other Worlds to Science Stories (4 issues), and then to Universe Science Fiction (10 issues), for various convoluted financial and legal reasons. None of these alternate titles are included here. This offering, then, is entirely titled Other Worlds, and consists of an unbroken 43-issue run. The editor was indicated as Robert N. Webster for the first 2 issues, but that was just a pseudonym for Palmer and Mahaffey. Editor Palmer and the controversial Richard S. Shaver contributed a great deal of the contents under their own names and various pseudonyms. Some notable appearances are Ray Bradbury: the disturbing Way In the Middle of the Air (later an episode in The Martian Chronicles) plus another tale, Eric Frank Russell: the wonderful Dear Devil plus 4 other stories, A.E. Van Vogt: War of Nerves (later part of The Voyage of the Space Beagle) plus 2 other stories, Fritz Leiber: a Fafred and G … [Click Below for Full Description]

Thomas Merton
Abbey of Gethsemani, Gethsemani KY, 1959. INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY THOMAS MERTON. Original red cloth and gray/white paper-covered boards in fine condition with the original clear tissue wrapper. The fragile wrapper is rarely found and although this one shows wear and tear, it is still scarce and desirable. Inscribed by Merton: "For Warren Auskamp, gratefully + cordially, + with all good wishes" and signed underneath with his monastic name. A translation by Sister Rose of Lima of four sermons by a 12th century Cistercian abbot. Merton wrote a lengthy intrduction, being 25 pages on Blessed Guerric's thought. The work was most likely preapred as a gift book by the abbey. Merton inscriptions are quite scarce and we have never seen a signed copy of this work before. FEITELSON, Lorser
(1950-1959). Hard Cover. Very Good / Very Good. Item #033010 Five issues of Art D'aujourd'hui (1950-1954) and eight issues of L'Oeill (1955-1959). Nonconsecutive issues, with Feitelson's markings throughout and his name written on a 1954 issue of Art D'aujourd'hui. Feitelson was one of the founders of what came to be called the Los Angeles School of painting, a post-surrealist style that developed into what became the "Hard Edge" style of abstraction. The first issue here of AD is without a rear cover and has detaching pages. At least one issue has an excision by Feitelson to a page. Overall the lot is very good. Together with Feitelson's copy of The Forum Exhibition of Modern American Painters (NY: 1916) that had been inscribed to him, although only "To Lorser" is now legible; a very good copy with a chipped jacket protector affixed to it. Unless otherwise noted, our first editions are first printings. [Attributes: First Edition]

FLEMING, Peter
Viking Press, 1959. Very Good. Hardcover. Reprint of the American edition. A sound, very good copy in an attractive, if moderately worn, very good copy with rubbing and short tears. Excellent account of the Boxer siege of the Western legations in Peking by Ian Fleming's older brother (both served with British Intelligence during WWII), and although not credited, almost certainly the inspiration for the film *55 Days at Peking*, which was filmed four years after. With: original, alternative jacket art by Peter Laune, who provided the finished jacket art for the American edition. Tempura painting, approximately 7.5" x 7.5", matted, and with a label on the verso for an exhibition of Laune's jacket paintings. The printed jacket displays a Boxer assault on the legation; the original, variant art displays the allied relief column lobbing shells in Peking. [Attributes: In Dust Jacket]
