Fleming, Ian
London: Jonathan Cape, 1959. First edition. Fine/Near Fine. A Fine book in an unclipped Near Fine jacket, with the spine a bit toned. Signed by Ian Fleming on the front endpaper. An exceptionally pleasing signed copy. The seventh book in Ian Fleming's internationally acclaimed James Bond series, Goldfinger was received more positively than its predecessor, Dr. No, and was heralded as "a superlative thriller from our foremost literary magician" (New York Herald Tribune). While following Auric Goldfinger, a wealthy investor in the gold trade with ties to the Soviet counterintelligence agency, Bond is pulled into a malicious plot to infiltrate and steal the gold of Fort Knox. His efforts to thwart Goldfinger are assisted by Tilly Masterton, who seeks retribution for her murdered sister, and together they fight Goldfinger and his Korean factotum, Oddjob. In this novel, the Bond character was more fully developed and shown, with symbolic undertones, to represent Saint George, a prominent crusading saint in Catholicism. Fleming used American gold tycoon, Charles W. Engelhard Jr., as the inspiration for his Goldfinger character, one of his best villains. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. J.R.R. Tolkien
Used with wear and tear. Allen and Unwin. A lovely 1959 set, Impressions 8, 6, 4 1959, 59, 58 with uniform wear to books and jacket indicating they've been kept together. These early impressions are increasingly hard to find without much more wear and tear, especially to the dust jackets. This is a particularly outstanding set, jacket spines are tanned, but have suffered very little paper damage compare to other sets this age we have sold before. Books have no serious flaws. They do have the owner bookplate to each volume, but this does not detract from the value in our expert opinion. Ideally collectors want the early printing set they can find, closest to 1,1,1. They did not sell them formally as sets until 1956. You would buy them individually and you often see mixed impressions sets in the 50's and miss-matched jackets. This was the way they were sold. By the 1960's they were selling more sets and fans knew to keep them in very good condition, 50's sets were still being read and abused. We rarely get sets this nice for the age, don't delay buy it today. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]

[...] Ça me fit une étrange sensation. Paris and Marne, 1959. Hardcover. Near Fine. Oblong quarto measuring 11" x 7.5". String-tied green leather and textured paper. Contains 94 black and white silver gelatin photographs measuring between 1.75" x 2.25" and 4.75" x 6.75" with captions in Hungarian. Near fine album with some edgewear and lacking seven photographs with fine photographs. A photo album documenting four young Hungarian men touring Paris and the Marne in the late 1950s. The images depict what appear to be two gay couples on holiday; the overall mood of summer and freedom is striking. Some of the photos have been trimmed into irregular shapes and pasted into designed layouts and include whimsical hand-lettered captions and drawings. The men are seen goofing off, swimming, often times close to one another and in various states of dress. A few of the photos show some of the men in small bathing suits flexing in body builder style poses. A rare example of candid and casual snapshots of homosexual couples from the 1950s, artistically presented.

Harold Pinter
Encore Publishing. Pinter, Harold - The Birthday Party First UK Edition 1959 SIGNED An exceptionally rare first edition of Pinter's second full-length play, published in limited numbers by Encore Publishing in 1959. This edition is signed on the title page by the author, with a personal dedication to the actress Margery Withers - the second actress to play the part of Meg' (and the first to do so on television).- - - - - - - - - -The Birthday Party was first staged in the spring of 1958 at the Arts Theatre in Cambridge, before playing in Oxford and Wolverhampton. It opened in London, at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, in May 1958 and infamously closed after only eight performances. It's failure is said to have caused Pinter to consider ending his ambition to be a playwright but subsequent revivals have cemented it's status as a classic. In 1959 the play received it's first such re-evalution when it was performed by the Tavistock Repertory Company at the Tower Theatre in Islington, London. This production provides the cover photograph of Encore's first edition. Pinter, who lived locally, saw the production and attended some rehearsals (although he was not directly involved in the production). The company, run by non-professionals, were the first to stage the play after it's 1958 opening.[Tower Theatre archive:http://www.towertheatre.co/plays/1959/p5906.htm] This copy of the book belonged to Margery Withers, the actress who played Meg' in the Tavistock Rep Company production. It is personally signed by Pinter with the following message:"To Margery, I shall always remember your … [Click Below for Full Description]

Fleming, Ian
London: Jonathan Cape, 1959. First edition. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.
