Burgess 99. & "The Alexandria Quartet is one of those works that seem to draw upon and sum up a multitude of works and writers and bodies of knowledge that have come before. Sources specific to Egypt include Constantine Cavafy's poetry and E. M. Forster's Alexandria: A History and a Guide. Other sources range from The Arabian Nights to accounts of the life of occult philosopher Paracelsus, from the obsessive erotic catalogues of the Marquis de Sade (who wrote his own Justine and who provides three of the volumes with epigraphs) to the thrillers of John Buchan. Freud is here (providing a psychological framework and yet another epigraph), as well as his student Georg Groddeck. Durrell also utilizes Einstein's theory of relativity, recounting the same events from multiple viewpoints within the first three volumes, then advancing the characters and situations through the fourth dimension, time, in the fourth and final volume. . . . Whatever the merits of the works his contemporaries were producing in the 1950s, most of those seemed cautious and provincial compared to Durrell's unabashedly romantic and experimental novels."         GITANS AUX STES.-MARIES

The Photographer N.p.: The Photographer, c1960. First ed. Clergue, Lucian. Portfolio with 11 original b&w silver photographs, of varying sizes, including one folded, mounted to bifold art paper; includes a manuscript title page and colophon ( title page calligraphy in dark red crayon, colophon calligraphy in ink with the photographer's signature in dark red crayon). The colophon reads " Cette plaquette de ouze photographie de Lucien Clergue, consacrée aux gitans des Saintes Maries de la Mer et àSarah leur patronne a été tirée à 150 exemplaires par l'auteur. Ex no 115".All housed in a a plain black paper wrapper with "Gitans" in calligraphy in red crayon on the front wrapper. Near Fine. Lucien Clergue started his long career as a photographer following the street performers and Gypsies in the south of France. By 1960 he had already amassed a large body of work from the Camargue region, known is medieval times as a retreat for the Roma peoples, and specifically from its capital, Saintes Maries de la Mer. In this portfolio, at least one of the images dates from 1955 and is one of the photographer's signature early images. Although many of these images have been reproduced in later books and exhibitions, this portfolio is never mentioned in his bibliography or official chronology, therefore the date is inexact. In later years, Clergue devoted most of his photographic attention to the female nude, yet the images from this body of work show him to have been a master of the social documentary roving camera.OCLC locates only two copies, Bibliotheque Nationale de France, and New York Public Library Research Library.

After a headline-making speech in Phoenix saying Russia’s plan to launch missiles in the Pacific Ocean as “razen military pressure to force their will,” Truman writes: “Had a hell of a time in Phoenix. 10,000 at the Airport and they bruised me up good – and as the colored gal said – I bruses easy.”

Typed Letter Signed “Harry,” one page, 7” x 10.5”. Independence, Missouri, January 12, 1960. To John W. Snyder. Fine condition. Truman and John W. Snyder had been close friends since they served together in the U.S. Army Reserves after World War I. Snyder served as Truman’s Secretary of the Treasury from 1946-1953. In full, “You do not know how very much I appreciated your letter of January 7 and of course, when I get my ducks in a row you can rest assured I will do my level best to make that visit to Vanderbilt. I must have at least twenty invitations from schools at which I want to appear but I have had so much mail during the last thirty days that I have not been able to get to the bottom of it. “I hope you will be in Washington between January 20 and January 23. If so, you and I will see if we can work out a date for Vanderbilt University I have not answered Mr. Booth’s letter because I have been unable to make a firm commitment but I am sure we can work it out before we get through.” In a handwritten postscript, Truman adds: “Had a hell of a time in Phoenix. 10,000 at the Airport and they bruised me up good – and as the colored gal said – I bruses [sic] easy.” On January 8, 1960, Harry Truman spoke before an Arizona Democratic Party fund-raising dinner in Phoenix. Referring to the Russian plan to launch a series of missiles in the Pacific Ocean for the purpose of developing a more powerful space rocket, Truman accused Russia of using “high-handed and brazen military pressure to force their will on the world” by making a “missile invasion” of the Pacific. “Without prior discussion or negotiations with us or our allies,” Truman continued, “the Russians are roping off arbitrarily a large area of the Pacific and have warned that all ships and planes, under whatever flag, keep out of this area for a period of thirty days … The Soviet Union has expressed an interest in measures to reduce the common peril of war, but the Russians rarely make moves that have any relation to their words of peace…” Truman also spoke about whom the Democrats should nominate for President in 1960: “We need a vigorous, fighting, genuine liberal in the White House, and not a hot-house liberal, who talks the fame but doesn’t play it. The man the Democrats must finds for 1960 must be a man not only with a sense of history, but with a vision of the future. He must be a man with ability to lead. He must be a man with the capacity to make bold decisions.”

        RITUAL IN THE DARK. Signed

London: Victor Gollancz, 1960 The Victor Gollancz Copy Inscribed By John Braine. 8vo., 416pp. Original cloth, black lettering. Dustwrapper. First edition. Very top of spine slightly faded. Fore-edges slightly browned. Wrapper lightly browned, creased, chipped at head & heel & with short tears. A very good plus copy in a very good dustwrapper. Inscribed on the fixed front endpaper, both sides of the free endpaper & on the half title by the author John Braine to Victor Gollancz: 'Miss Hewitt - Dear V. G., After this, please don't send me any more books for at least a year; I'm not working for you. Ritual in the Dark has, despite all the advice I gave to Colin, at least 1000 ineptitudes; and, despite all these ineptitudes, is still supremely readable. It renews my youth , and makes me remember the London I once knew - the La Vie Boheme London, the (illegible word) alive London of both 1945 and 1951. It's a very bad novel; but I could read it. And if you don't think this high praise then you know nothing at all abou t me - which indeed you don't, - sentimental old bourgeois that you are - or about any kind of mature writing! John Braine.' An important presentation inscription, John Braine being one of the people Colin Wilson acknowledges along with Victor Gollancz himself on the dedication leaf.. Signed by Author. 1st Edition.
