Drawings for the Bible

New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1960 . Illustrated by Marc Chagall. Text by Gaston Bachelard. Translated by Stuart Gilbert. First American edition, published the same year in Paris by Verve. Publisher's pictorial cloth boards illustrated by Chagall; in the original matching pictorial dust jacket. A near fine copy, with some wear to the extremities, spine lacking the usual chipping and wear (extremely uncommon in this condition), extremely fine and bright interior; unclipped dust jacket, with minor chipping and slight losses to the extremities, some wear to the spine hinges, closed tear to the spine tail, bright and unrubbed panels. Overall, an excellent and bright copy, in much better condition than usually found. Marc Chagall (1887-1985) was a prolific artist, born in Belarus and active in France, who is best known for his use of color and images drawn from folklore. His Jewish heritage and spiritual interests manifested themselves throughout his artistic career. After successfully collaborating with Parisian art dealer Ambroise Vollard, Chagall created a series of 105 etchings inspired by the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament), begun 1930-1939 and completed 1952-1956. The etchings were published together in 1956 (the English title was Illustrations for the Bible) and he received much critical success. A complementary publication, Drawings for the Bible contains 96 heliogravure (photogravure) reproductions of Chagall's drawings from 1958-1959 "on biblical themes which in general he had not dealt [with] for his illustrations for the Bible reproduced in Verve 33/34." Additionally, this edition has 24 color lithographs that Chagall designed specifically for this volume, including a color pictorial cover. Although the images are sometimes difficult to identify without referring to the image captions at the rear of the text, this volume is both a unique presentation of the Hebrew Bible and a collection of striking and beautiful artwork by a modern master.. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included. Illus. by Chagall, Marc.

Near fine in a excellent near fine price-clipped dust jacket with light wear to the extremities. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Jones left an enduring legacy of athletic prowess and exemplary personal characteristics. The Lithographs of Chagall

New York: George Braziller. Near Fine in Near Fine dj. 1960. First American Edition. Hardcover. NOISBN . [minor soiling to top and bottom edges, otherwise a nice clean book; the jacket (which is one of the 12 original lithographs) shows some wear along the top edge and has a bit of wear and a tiny tear (internally tape-repaired) at the lower rear hinge, but has otherwise been well-protected by the original acetate wrap (still present); the acetate jacket wrap has two short cracks at the top of the spine, one more at the bottom front, is missing about a half-inch square at the base of the spine, and has a soft diagonal crease near the bottom of the rear panel -- but for all that is still in pretty good shape]. (color and B&W reproductions) The first installment of what would eventually be a six-volume catalogue raisonne of Marc Chagall's lithographic work, this one covering the years 1922-1957 and reproducing 191 individual works, 63 of which are in color, and featuring an introduction by Chagall himself. (Other listings for this book cite 60 color reproductions, but this is incorrect; and yes, I counted them, thrice.) In addition to the catalogued items, this volume includes 12 original lithographs: one is the wrap-around dust jacket itself, the other 11 (10 color, one black and white) are bound into the book itself; all are present and in fine condition, excepting only the jacket with its minor depredations, already noted. [NOTE also that the scanned image of the jacketed book accompanying this listing was made with the acetate overlay removed, which better represents the condition of the jacket/lithograph.] .

Peeping Tom (Original British Advance Poster for the 1960 film)

London: Michael Powell (Theatre), 1960. British Advance Poster for the classic 1960 film. The British Double Crown poster for the film turns up from time to time, but this Advance issue, which does not state the film's title, is a rarity. & & Noted director Powell's most controversial film, about a serial killer who films his female victims as they are dying. Reviled by critics on its release and today considered a masterpiece, it is the second of three feature films director made after parting ways with his longtime filmmaking partner Emeric Pressburger. Ostensibly a film about a killer with serious Freudian issues, but later reassessed as much more conceptual and complex. Roger Ebert pointed out famously in his 1999 review of the film that the audience is implicated as much as the killer."Movies make us into voyeurs. We sit in the dark, watching other people's lives. It is the bargain the cinema strikes with us, although most films are too well-behaved to mention it."& & Martin Scorsese is probably the most famous fan of the film, and takes Ebert's argument further, saying, "I have always felt that Peeping Tom and 8 say everything that can be said about film-making, about the process of dealing with film, the objectivity and subjectivity of it and the confusion between the two. 8 captures the glamour and enjoyment of film-making, while Peeping Tom shows the aggression of it, how the camera violates. From studying them you can discover everything about people who make films, or at least people who express themselves through films.

Jules Romains, preface. Unpaged [29 pp]. + plates. Loose folded sheets in stiff paper wrappers in clamshell. First edition. Illus. with 62 tipped-in color plates. Signed by the artist on an original color drawing with dedication preceding the title. No. 568 of 1916 of the "dition de luxe, sur papier offset de sorel moussel" (out of a total limitation of 2, 000). Bencjon Benn (1905-1989) was born in Bialystock (Russia/Poland) into a prominent family of Jewish scholars and professionals. In 1930 he was awarded a scholarship for three years to study art in Paris where he quickly established his reputation. World War II brought an end to that life, and he was forced into hiding by the Gestapo for over two years and eventually interred in the Beanne Le Rolande camp. During this time he found inspiration in the bible and that spiritual side exploded in this work, ?62 Psalms of the Bible, ? produced after the war when he had adopted the name Benn, and went on to write and and illustrate over 100 books on the Bible. Fine contents in a bright wrapper with two small tears at the rear hinge in soiled clamshell boxed, expertly reinforced at the edges.

        The strategy of conflict

Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 1960. "Game Theory as a Unifying Framework for the Social Sciences"--Presentation Copy of Schelling's Nobel Prize-Winning WorkSchelling, Thomas C. (1921- ). The strategy of conflict. vii, [3], 309pp. Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 1960. 210 x 137 mm. Original cloth, dust-jacket (slightly chipped at head and foot). Very good copy, inscribed by Schelling to British economist Thomas Balogh (1905-85) on the front endpaper: "To Thomas Balogh to whom, if he will read this, I am even further indebted. Tom Schelling." Laid in is Schelling's signed autograph note to Balogh: "I thought that if I gave you the book, rather than lent it, I'd oblige you to read more of it. Tom."First Edition of Schelling's most famous book, a study of bargaining and strategic behavior which pioneered the application of game theory to economics, business, warfare and other real-world situations. The Strategy of Conflict is considered one of the hundred books most influential in the West since 1945. The book introduced the concept of the "Schelling point" (also known as the focal point), defined as a point-physical or mental-that people will tend to converge on in the absence of communication, because it seems natural, special or relevant to them. In 2005 Schelling was awarded a share of the Nobel Prize in economics for his groundbreaking work in this field."Against the backdrop of the nuclear arms race in the late 1950s, Thomas Schelling's book The Strategy of Conflict set forth his vision of game theory as a unifying framework for the social sciences. Schelling showed that a party can strengthen its position by overtly worsening its own options, that the capability to retaliate can be more useful than the ability to resist an attack, and that uncertain retaliation is more credible and more efficient than certain retaliation. These insights have proven to be of great relevance for conflict resolution and efforts to avoid war."Schelling's work prompted new developments in game theory and accelerated its use and application throughout the social sciences. Notably, his analysis of strategic commitments has explained a wide range of phenomena, from the competitive strategies of firms to the delegation of political decision power" (Nobelprize.org). Schelling presented this copy of his book to Thomas Balogh (Lord Balogh), a Hungarian-born economist who moved to England in the 1930s and taught for many years at Balliol College, Oxford and at the London School of Economics. In 1964 he was made Economic Advisor to the British Cabinet, and in 1968 he received a life peerage. He served as Britain's Minister of State for Energy from 1974 to 1977. Darling, I know I ought to feel absolutely mizz about Dick Crossman, but all I really feel is good-oh for Polly Elwes

1960. Sheet size: 192 × 140 mm. Pen and black ink with overlaid crosshatched film on wove paper. Stamped on verso for publication in the Daily Mail, 16 March 1960, and with pencil reproduction instructions recto. Polly Elwes, BBC announcer and reporter, married sports broadcaster Peter Dimmock on 12 March. The Dick Crossman reference likely relates to his election as chairman of the National Executive of the Labour Party. The cartoons and illustrations of Nicolas Bentley (1907-1978) were part of the warp and weft of English popular culture in the 1950s and 60s. Never savage, though often waspishly accurate and exuding an urbane air of amusement at the foibles of his fellows, Bentley's work was familiar to the public from a wide variety of publications. Between 1952 and 1954 he drew regular cartoons for the weekly Time and Tide, and after that for the daily News Chronicle. Between 1958 and 1962 he drew topical cartoons for the Daily Mail under the title "Watch My Line." He also drew many portraits, in black and white line, of famous people, for various papers, including over sixty for the Sunday Telegraph, which began publication in February 1961.

Rare complete set of the Dolmen chapbooks in the original paper wrappers. "The idea behind the Dolmen chapbooks was to print short texts with illustrations, using various type formats and techniques within a uniform page size The series gives a fair picture of the very personal interests which informed the Press at this time, and several of the titles were issued in other formats" (Miller 17). The set of twelve pamphlets is divided into three groups of four, each with a paper wrapper, and with the series wrapper enclosing the complete set. Most of the individual pamphlets were published in editions of only 250, and complete sets are extremely uncommon. Miller 17 [Attributes: First Edition]

        Excerpts from Visions of Cody

(New York: New Directions, 1960). One of 750 numbered copies signed by the author. Selections from Kerouac's lengthy character study of Neal Cassady, who appears here as the title character, Cody Pomeray. It was in On the Road that Kerouac first immortalized Cassady as the frenzied, charismatic Beat firgure Dean Moriarty. Their friendship was intense and mutually influential, even if the two more or less parted ways in the Sixties, when Cassady took up with the Merry Pranksters and became involved in the San Francisco psychedelic scene. Cassady has been credited with helping to transform Kerouac's writing from a traditional narrative style to the tumbling, "first thought best thought" mode for which he is so well known. Indeed, in the preface to this book, Kerouac comments that his intention was to write "an enormous paen which would unite my vision of America with words spilled out in the modern spontaneous method. Instead of just a horizontal account of travels on the road, I wanted a vertical, metaphysical study of Cody's character. . . ." Bound in cream boards backed in purple cloth, in original acetate wrapper. Very minor bump at top edge of upper board, small closed tears to acetate at spine head and foot, else a very fine copy. Publisher's announcement laid in.

The End of Ideology: On the Exhaustion of Political Ideas In the Fifties

Glencoe, Ill: The Free Press, 1960. First edition of this landmark in American social thought,. Octavo, original half cloth. Inscribed by the author, "For ____ ______ with appreciation Daniel Bell Harvard University Cambridge, Mass". Light shelfwear to the bottom boards, else near fine in a very good dust jacket. The End of Ideology was one of the most influential, most controversial, and most misunderstood books about the 1950s. It is also a provocative discussion by one of America's most creative thinkers of political and philosophical issues that concern us still" (Alan Brinkley). Named by the Times Literary Supplement as one of the 100 most influential books since the end of World War II.

        Martin Luther

      c. 1960. Sheet size: 137 × 151 mm. Pen and ink on wove paper. Stamped on verso for publication in the Sunday Telegraph.
