Incredible content letter of the Rebbe, Menachem Schneerson, in English! – “There are no two camps in the Jewish people … The Jewish people is one people, united by one Torah, under one G-d … there will come a day when this will be realized … Stop any Jew in the street … and ask him, ‘What is a Chosid’ he will unhesitatingly reply something like this: ‘A Chosid is a bearded Jew with long sidelocks, dressed in an old-fashioned way, who puts on two pairs of Tefillin, prays much longer…’”

Brooklyn, New York, July 7, 1960. 8.5" x 10.75". "Rare Typed Letter Signed “M. Schneerson” in English, 3p, 8.5” x 10.75”, separate sheets. On his lightweight letterhead “Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson / Lubovitch / 770 Eastern Parkway / Brooklyn 13, N.Y.” in Hebrew and English. Brooklyn, New York, 12th of Tammuz 5720 (7 July 1960). To H.A. Goodman, 27 Lordship Park, London. Edited with 11 English words in his hand. Small paper loss in blank upper left of each page after staple removal. Frayed at blank edges of second and third page, affecting one typed word. Very Good condition. In part, “There is, of course, the general principle that the larger sum already includes the smaller one, or as our Sages expressed it, ‘In the sum of 200, 100 is included.’ I refer to the teachings and way of life of Chassidus. For Chassidus did not come to minimize in any way, G-d forbid, but to add to and strengthen all matters of Torah and Mitzvoth by instilling a spirit of vivacity and enthusiasm into all aspects of Jewish life…“Although you will suspect me of being favorably inclined to the Chassidic point of view, and I will not deny it, and in any case it would be futile to deny it, nevertheless the fact is that Chassidus, far from creating a conflict in the matter of allegiance to the Torah and Mitzvoth, is the ingredient which gives the necessity flavor and zest to all matters of Torah and Mitzvoth, and can only strengthen and vitalize all positive forces in Jewish life…”Discussing the work of his “father-in-law of saintly memory,” the Rabbi continues, “His work was not confined to the Chassidic community, as you know, but to all sections of Jewry, including what you call ‘the other camp’ … This he did from the profound conviction that there are no two camps in the Jewish people; that the Jewish people is one people, united by one Torah, under one G-d … the Chassidic movement is not the property of any particular group, but the heritage of all our people...“American youth is not of the philosophic turn of mind. They have neither the patience nor the training to delve into long philosophical discussions, and to evaluate different systems and theories. When they are induced to go to college and introduced to all sorts of ideas, including those that are diametrically opposed to the Torah and Mitzvoth, and there are many of them, since there are many falsehoods but only one truth, this approach can only bring them to a greater measure of confusion…”"

        ZEN AND ZEN CLASSICS.

[Tokyo [1960-70], Hokuseido. Brown cloth, very good, 5 vol.. set, index, bibliography, 124+211+185+340+225 pp., dj on all. b.w. illustrations, all FIRST EDITION except vol. 2 which is. 2nd printing. AUTHOR PRESENTATION & HIS INITIALS VOL.1. RARE. This illusive title has been out of print for a long time, only a couple of the volumes were reprinted, the complete work consisting of 5 volumes is rare and seldom found complete regardless of edition. * ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT WORKS IN ENGLISH ON ZEN: This is a comprehensive set of writings on Zen, Zen arts, the Zen masters and historical background. A wonderful set of works, with English, Japanese characters & Romanized texts. * A very well written, readable set of books. The celebrated Zen master D.T. Suzuki described Blyth as "one of the most eminent exponents of Japanese culture." **** OTHER RELATED WRITINGS BY BLYTH ON ZEN & HAIKU: ZEN AND HAIKU: Blyth's studies on Haiku, Japanese humor and Zen are "unique contributions towards East-West understanding." Blyth lived & worked in the east 40 years, until his death in 1964. The history of Zen is the history of moments. It cannot be, like the history of ideas, or even the history of the freedom of thought, an account of development, systematization, criticism, modification, replacement and so forth. Zen seems to become deeper sometimes, shallower, broader, narrower sometimes, but there is no progress of the ordinary kind. It is a history only in the sense of being a list of names of great men in the attainment of great and so forth. Zen seems to become deeper sometimes, shallower, broader, narrower sometimes, but there is no progress of the ordinary kind. It is a history only in the sense of being a list of names of great men in the attainment of great Buddha-hood. . Please check with us as we may have this in stock. Also please visit our website where you can download our latest catalog of Blyth books. You can also email us and request the list. We try to maintain a good number of his titles in stock at all times. * BLYTH'S CONTRIBUTION: Blyth lived and worked in the East for forty years, until his death in 1964 at the age of sixty-six. From the time of his internment in Japan during World War II, Blyth wrote assiduously. In the 1950's, his "ZEN IN ENGLISH LITERATURE" and "ORIENTAL CLASSICS" and "HAIKU" reached enthusiastic readers in America and Europe. Aldous Huxley describes Blyth's work as "illuminating." As William J. Higginson writes in his "HAIKU HANDBOOK," thanks to Blyth "a new interest in Japanese Haiku began to grow among poets of the immediate post World War II generation." ... Blyth's Contribution to cross-cultural understanding was manifold. In 1945, Blyth assumed a post as professor of English at Tokyo's Gakushuin University, the former Peers' School. For almost twenty years he tutored Crown Prince Akihito, the present Emperor. Blyth played a leading role in Emperor Hirohito's historical declaration of January 1, 1946, that he was a human being rather than a god. Blyth edited numerous writings from English and American literature, making them available to avid Japanese readers. **** FIRST EDITIONS: Following is a list of the First Editions: Vol. 1: 1960; vol. 2: 1964; vol. 3: 1970; vol. 4: 1966; vol. 5: 1962; vol. 7: 1962. [vol. 5, 7 are same contents] see additional notes below. There was no volume six ever published nor issued. * IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT WHAT A COMPLETE SET IS: COMPLETE IN 5 VOLUMES. Blyth originally planned this work to be an 8 volume set, but due to his untimely death, it only went to 5 volumes [per dust jacket notes found on volume 2]. The back of the dust jacket on volume one [First Edition] shows the list planning on a total of 8 volumes in all. . The whole set now actually consists of 5 volumes only and is complete in that state. It contains the below list of volumes, the list is based on our primary observation of each volume in addition to the publisher's notice of the series found on the dust jackets of several volumes. * The set is complete with volumes 1-5, there can be an acceptable variant in the last volume which can either be numbered volume 5 or 7, contents remains the same, it was merely the publisher's error. The value the a set with either volume 5 or 7 remains the same in our eyes, both issued in 1962 as the First Edition. * THE COMPLETE SET OF 5 VOLUMES: . Vol. I: GENERAL INTRODUCTION, FROM THE UPANISHADS TO HUINENG also WHAT I ZEN ? THE HISTORY OF ZEN, THE BELIEVING MIND, SONG OF TRHE WAY [THE CHENGTAOKE], THE PLATFORM SUTRA. * Vol. II: HISTORY OF ZEN, 713-867 also THE FIVE SECTS, GOZU ZEN AND ROAN ZEN, ENO AND HIS DISCIPLES, SEKITO'S DISCIPLES, SEPPO, SEPPO'S DISCIPLES, HOGEN & DISCIPLES, YAKUSAN TO SEKISO, SENSU, KASSAN, SHOZAN, TOZAN, SOZAN & UNGO, UMMON I, II, III THE SANDOKAI, HOKYOZAMMAI, POEMS OF HANSHAN I, II, ZEN MYSTICISM, EXISTENTIALISM, WAYS AND THE WAY, NATURE, HUMAN NATURE, THE BUDDHA NATURE THE POETIC NATURE, DEFECTS OF ZEN. * Vol. III: HISTORY OF ZEN 867-1260 also THE DISCIPLES OF TOZAN, NANGAKU AND BASHO, JOSHU, HYAKUJO RINZAI AND OBAKU THEIR DISCIPLES. * Vol. IV: MUMONKAN, HISTORY OF KOREAN ZEN, WUMENKUAN &c. * Vol. V: TWENTY-FIVE ZEN ESSAYS: WUMENKAUAN. . ! Note: vol. 5 and 7 are the same contents, simply a . numbering error on the part of the publisher. * Vol. VI: HISTORY OF JAPANESE ZEN, DOGEN HAKUIN, ETC. To our knowledge, this volume was never published. The contents were likely incorporated into other volumes with variant titles. * Vol. VII: ZEN ESSAYS, CHRISTIANITY, SEX, SOCIETY, ETC. . !! Note: vol. 5 and 7 have the same contents, simply a . numbering error on the part of the publisher. * NEVER ISSUED: Vol. VIII: BUDDHIST SERMONS ON CHRISTIAN TEXTS. The publisher never issued this title as part of this series, but issued it as a monograph in 1952, several years predating this series, then again in 1976 posthumously. Neither editions ever had any markings to indicate it to be a part of this series, we can only assume Blyth made a simple error when discussing this title as part of the current series. * ** = Please see note below: ** Hokuseido made an error in the numbering of this set. volumes 5 & 7 are identical. In fact, Blyth only published the first 5 of the planned set of 8 when he died in the fall of 1964, the last 3 volumes never published. To further complicate matters, in 1962 there was a 7th. volume set published but discontinued after Blyth's death, this was then reduced down to be numbered as volumes 1-5. The contents of old vol. 6 and 7 were combined to become new volume 5. This fact is clearly stated on verso of title page of new volume 5, "First published, as volume 7...1962 then reprinted as vol. 5, 1966." Suffice to say, when complete, the set is RARE in either of the 5 or 7 volume variants. The 8th volume was issued later as a monograph, and does NOT state volume 8. * The dust jacket on volume 1 clearly shows the plan to publish 8 volumes in the complete planned set of 8. The dust jacket of volume 5 of the 5 volume set clearly states a new and revised volume count to be now 5. Volume 5 in the new set contains: TWENTY-FIVE ZEN ESSAYS, [CHRISTIANITY], SEX SOCIETY &c. Introductions by D.T. Suzuki. * Please inquire with us for other titles by Reginald Horace Blyth, as we try to keep them in stock. This list is posted to our website, please visit and down load it or contact us for a current catalogue. *** SIZE & BINDING: The set is uniformly bound in brown cloth, with black lettering, 11.5 x 18.5 cm. Each volume was issued with a uniform dust jacket, each in a different color. Later editions were issued in stiff wrappers, some with dust jackets again in the same size. * BIBLIOGRAPHY: .         To Kill a Mockingbird

Lippincott, Philadelphia 1960 - A bright, attractive first edition of Lee's powerful novel. The book is in Near Fine condition on account of gentle bumps to the corners and lower edge of the front board. Internally in excellent condition with no owner's markings and appearing unread. The dust jacket also Near Fine with a few short tears at the top of the front panel and corresponding creases, and minor wear at the spine ends and corners. Price-clipped, but price is not an issue point. A book that usually turns up much the worse for wear, this is a particularly clean copy that has just come out of a private collection.Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize winning coming of age novel, set in Maycomb, Alabama. An American classic, the novel took over two years for Lee to write- it was inspired by her own upbringing. (In fact, Lee's father was a lawyer who had defended black clients at the cost of his practice). Its production was not without difficulty and Lee once became so angry over the course of writing the novel that she tossed the manuscript out a window. The book has never been out of print, sold tens of millions of copies, and is required reading for the American adolescent. To Kill a Mockingbird was also adapted by Horton Foote into a 1963 film, directed by Robert Mulligan and starring Gregory Peck. The film would win three Oscars. "?skilled, unpretentious, and totally ingenious." (Contemporary New Yorker review). Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. [Attributes: First Edition]

Photograph of Louis Armstrong with trumpet and with his wife, Lucille

N.p.: N.p., 1960. Photograph of Louis Armstrong at home, holding his trumpet, with his wife Louise. Taken by noted jazz photographer Eddie Adams in the mid-1960s, printing date unknown. With the Eddie Adams Archive stamp on the verso, signed just below by his son, Edward Adams II. An unusually candid image we have never seen, to our knowledge unpublished. Included is a printed sheet describing Armstrong's 9-day diet plan, titled "Lose Weight, the Satchmo Way!" that is SIGNED by Armstrong (with both his full name and "Satchmo"). An interesting plan that would today be considered Atkins-esque, heavy on black coffee, fruit, vegetables, meat, eggs, and cheese, ending with "A laxative at least once a week, is very nice." Vintage silver gelatin print, 7.5 x 9.5 inches. Fine condition.

Stern: Jazz an einem Sommerabend [Jazz on a Summer's Day]

Germany: Filmverleih Die Lupe GmbH, 1960. German poster for the original release of the legendary 1960 jazz documentary, set at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival in Rhode Island, shot in high style by commercial and fashion photographer Bert Stern. In addition to the iconic figures noted on the poster, the film also features Theolonious Monk, Jimmy Giuffre, Dinah Washington, Chuck Berry, Chico Hamilton, and others. In European fashion, the poster emphasizes photographer/director/cinematographer Stern ahead of all things, embracing the notion of the auteur in the documentary realm long before such a thing became fashionable. Stern's naturalistic approach to shooting a festival event, the first of its kind to be attempted on such a scale, influenced and predicted by several years many similar documentaries, such as Monterey Pop" (1968), "Woodstock" (1970), and "The Concert for Bangladesh" (1972). 23 x 16 inches. Near Fine, folded twice as issued, bright and clean. National Film Registry.

AMIDA NYORAI HYAKU BUTSUZOU: ONE HUNDRED IMAGES OF AMIDA NYORAI: ONE HUNDRED IMA

[Nara ca. 1100 A.D., Joruri-ji Tempe]. A Single sheet 33.3 x. 46.8 cm. [backing size], rebacked on hand-made Washi paper,. print sheet size: 32.8 . x 45.6 cm., hand-printed woodblocks. on thin mulberry Washi paper, stunning work! S C A R C E. A RARE AND STUNNINGLY EARLY BEAUTIFUL BUDDHIST PRINT THIS AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE AND EARLY WOODBLOCK PRINT * "Although printing had been practiced in Japan as early as the eighth century, the stamping or block printing of large numbers of Buddhist images did not gain prominence until the last half of the Heian period. The reception of images was believed to be an effective method of accumulating religious merit, and this stimulated the production of Buddhist prints-often rather crudely made-in vast numbers. The blocks or stamps most commonly used contained anywhere from a single image up to a dozen identical units; large full-sheet blocks, such as this one, seemed to have been used less frequently." [quoted from Rosenfield, see below] *** DETAILS OF OUR ITEM: Our item is printed on high fiber Washi paper, quite bright and still retaining its natural fiber color. There is some loss to the lower margin but very little loss to the printing. The upper left corner is gone and with it five images are gone. There is a minor bit of left margin loss but very little printing loss. The right margin is excellent. The print was acquired from the late Richard C. Rudolph of U.C.L.A., who had cut the print in half horizontally. The two parts are now back together and has been professionally rebacked on Washi paper, there is no loss where they are rejoined. The hand-made Washi paper on the right and left edges are a bit thicker than the rest of the paper, perhaps there was an effort on the part of the paper-maker to give strength to these edges. Our example is exceptional when compared to other known copies. * ILLUSTRATED IN ISHIDA: This excellent example illustrated in Ishida is owned by Joruri-ji Temple and has only 81 of 100 images, there was loss to the margins. [see reference below] *** PRINTING AS A DAILY DEVOTION: Ishida points out on p.30-31, discussing the Heian practice of worshipers printing a number of Buddhist images each day or month to fulfill a religious vow. Printing these images gave merit and virtue to the printer, thereby increasing their position in the Buddhist Sangha [community]. Temples encouraged the Sangha to print images as that aided in soliciting donations. "Donors were allowed to pay for the printing of Buddhist images to be placed inside of statues. This served the purpose of temple finance in much the same way as printed appeals for contributions. The images were never distributed to the people but were instead stored away in sculpted images." It seems little has changed in a thousand years, as Buddhist priests still seem to offer prints to donors even today. It is believed that the prints were discovered in the 1960's and given to donors who gave substantial sums of money for temple restoration. . Every morning as part of a daily regimen, women of the Imperial court would print Buddhist images using woodblocks on sheets of thin mulberry Washi paper as religious observance, much like saying prayers every morning. After an appropriate number of pages were printed, the sheets were rolled and tied in bundles and then inserted into the hollow interior of sculptures. * WOODBLOCK PRINTING TECHNIQUE: This print was printed from a single woodblock containing ten images in a row, with ten rows in all yielding some 100 images on a single sheet. See Baskett p.30 for additional details. Rosenfield supports the idea of a single block with 100 images carved on it. There is ample evidence to support both Ishida and Baskett's idea that the print was done by use of a single block containing 100 images stamped on a single sheet of Mulberry paper. * RARITY: The print is exceptionally RARE ! Only a few examples have been cited, published or illustrated. Apparently this image only came to light in the 1960's and very few came to public view, those few that were given to patrons eluded the usual scholars and their publications. It was not uncommon for patrons of Buddhist temples in Japan to covet and hold their gifts from the temple for several reasons. Namely, the need and desire to remain unknown to the general public for their donations, which were done for the right reasons, avoiding any public acknowledgement. Secondly, there are moral questions vis-à-vis accepting "compensation/gifts" from monks for donations. Above all, donors do not like others to know their private business and so the prints given in acknowledgement by monks commonly remains a private matter. * A QUOTE FROM JOHN ROSENFIELD: Per Rosenfield: "The Main Hall [Hondo] of Joruri-ji, a temple situated in the low mountains east of Nara, houses a notable group of nine statues of Buddha Amida. During restoration on the central image of this group some years ago, many sheets of woodblock prints, among the one shown here, were discovered inside the statue. The pages were printed with rows of small Amida figures, each seated in mediation. In this example one hundred images printed from a single block of wood are arranged in ten horizontal rows. * The example illustrated in Rosenfield shows some loss to the lower corner. *** CONDITION: The print was kept relatively safe inside a sculpture of Amida Buddha for some 900 years. During that time natural attrition rate to bugs or moisture has taken a toll on this kind of print. It is therefore natural to see some loss and other minor defects. *** BIBLIOGRAPHY: * Rosenfield, John: JAPANESE ARTS OF THE HEIAN PERIOD: 794-1185: pages 74, illustration no. 29, text page 117. * Ishida, Mosaku et al: NIHON HANGA BIJUTSU ZENSHU, vol.         FUDOH MYOH-OH INBUTSU: ONE-HUNDRED IMAGES OF FUDOH MYOH-OH, FROM TOH-JI TEMPLE,

[Kyoto 1185-1333, Tohji Temple]. A single sheet woodblock. printed, white Washi mulberry paper, 32 x 48 cm., minor old. worming now rebacked, shows 100 FUDOH MYOH-OH icon images,. extremely rare and famous work. FIRST & ONLY OBSCURE EDITION. AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE 13TH CENTURY WOODBLOCK PRINT This FUDOH MYO-OH is a thirteenth century Late Heian [1185-1336] A.D. Buddhist work and is represented showing one-hundred individual Buddhist images, woodblock printed. . WHAT IS FUDOH MUYO-OH: FUDOH MYO-OH was one of the supernatural guardians of the paradise of the Amida Buddha. Also known commonly as the "Immovable Wisdom King," is the patron deity of the Yamabushi. He usually portrayed holding a sword and a lariat, clad in rags, has one fang pointing up and another pointing down, and a braid on one side of his head. It is also know in Chinese as BU DONG MING WANG. * PULSATING: Jon Rosenfield stated: "Overcrowded, pulsating with bristling energy, this sheet of one hundred tiny stamped images of Fudoh is typical of those found inside Buddhist statues of the 13th century." See his book cited below. * FUDO MYOO: In Sanskrit: Acalanatha, was the principal of the Myojh or "Enlightened Kings" of Esoteric Buddhism, A manifestation of Dainichi and a powerful conquer of evil, he is shown in many frightening aspects. Commonly depicted in very early woodblock prints with a fiery Mandala behind his head. See references below for Wikipedia citation. * This print was found in the Toh-ji [Eastern Temple], Kyoto. from the Shingon Buddhist sect. This is located next to the famous Rashomon gateway to the Heian capitol [now Kyoto]. It was formerly known as Kyoh-oh-gokoku [The Temple for the Defense of the Nation by Means of the King of Doctrines] believed to defend the nation. * This work upon discovery was first considered to have been printed in the Heian period [794-1185], later after study, it is currently believed to have been printed in the Kamakura [1185-1392] and is so cited by Baskett and Rosenfield to be this period. This Inbutsu [woodblock print] along with several others, was rolled up, then placed inside a hollow place in a Fudoh Myoh-oh statue and left for over nearly a millennium. In the 1960's Japanese temple monks began to conserve and preserve ancient sculptures in the Toh-ji temple and therefore discovered these prints. * Monk's efforts brought to light a few rare bundles of these prints, undisturbed. In an effort to save the structure and sculptures a very few were given to patrons of the temple in gratitude for substantial donations, which has been a common practice for over 2000 years in Japan, China and Korea. Because these prints were left sealed inside the statues, they were preserved in extraordinary condition. In some cases a few worms or insects penetrated and left some damage to the hand-made Washi mulberry paper, sadly this was unavoidable. Ours is one of those presented to a patron. Mosaku discusses this on pages 29, 30. * TOH-JI TEMPLE: UNESCO designated this as part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto" a World Heritage Site. The temple is located Minami-ku near the intersection of Omiya and Kujo Streets, southwest of Kyoto Station. Toh-ji is often associated with Kobo Daishi [Kukai]. The well-known Buddhist priest was put in charge of Toh-ji in 823 by order of Emperor Saga. The temple's principal image is of Yakushi Nyorai, the Medicine Buddha. * PRINTING AS A DAILY DEVOTION: Ishida points out this on p.30-31, discussing the Heian practice of worshipers printing a number of Buddhist images each day or month to fulfill a religious vow. The images were never distributed to the people but were instead stored away in sculpted images." See Ishida p.31. * Every morning as part of a daily regimen, women of the Imperial court would print Buddhist images using woodblocks on sheets of thin mulberry Washi paper as religious observance, much like saying prayers every morning. After an appropriate number of pages were printed, the sheets were rolled and tied in bundles and then inserted into the hollow interior of sculptures. * PRINTING TECHNIQUE: This print was likely printed from a single block containing ten images, then printed ten times on a single sheet, yielding a total of one-hundred images in all. See Baskett p.30. Upon closer observation, taking a single image, the third one from the right, and comparing it to all above there are the exact specks of dust influencing the printing of the flame lines in the upper left quadrant. This is ample evidence to support both Ishida and Baskett's idea that the print was done by use of a single block containing ten images then stamped from the top ten times on a single sheet of paper. * RARITY: The print is exceptionally rare. * CONDITION: The work has some worming on the upper left and right edges, where it was rolled up and stored inside a sculpture. All one-hundred images are present, there is some loss to eight of the images on the sides, and other old worming though not major but nevertheless has left its mark on the interior. The print was kept relatvely safe inside a sculpture of Amida Buddha for some 900 years. During that time natural attrition rate to bugs or moisture has taken a toll on this kind of print. It is therefore natural to see some loss and other minor defects. . Unfortunately almost all of the very few prints similar to this one have survived only in fragmented pieces, and none are cited nor illustrated in Ishida, They seem to have eluded the scrutiny of Ishida, and most other studies of early Buddhist woodblock prints. *** REFERENCES: BASKET, Mary: FOOTPRINTS OF THE BUDDHA: Japanese Buddhist Prints from American and Japanese Collections.         A SUITE OF 10 HAND-PRINTED STENCIL PRINTS SHOWS THE METHOD OF HANDMADE PAPER-MAK

[Japan c.1960]. Ten sheets, on deckle-edge hand-made Washi. paper, 10 polychrome stencil or "Katazome" prints, very good. likely done in a very small and LIMITED EDITION OF CA. 200. COPIES, 33.5 x 40.5 cm., a complete suite. ALWAYS RARE. SUPERB "KATAZOME" COLOR STENCILS BY A "NATIONAL TREASURE" CREATED BY A "LIVING NATIONAL TREASURE" . Keisuke Serizawa [1895-1984] was named a Living National Treasure in 1956 by the Japanese Emperor. A leader in modern folk art, his technique known as "Katazome," or stencil dyeing was a pioneer effort. Born in Shizuoka in 1895, he has been the leading exponent for stencil dyeing ["Katazome"] on cloth and paper. He applied his technique to hand-made Japanese Washi paper and was an active illustrator of books. He used paper cut-out patterns then applied colors to the stencils. His works are highly coveted by museums & collectors throughout the world. . Serizawa was the leading exponent for the Sosaku movement [Creative Art Movement] along with his close friends: Yanagi Soetsu, Hamada Shoji and Bernard Leach among others. His works have been hailed as the most typical & charming folk-arts from Japan. * This suite shows Serizawa's great interest and support of the hand-made papermakers and their villages of Northern Japan. The hand process of paper making is done in the winter, when the plants are dormant and the fibers are easily removed. This process requires the makers to immerse their hands in the freezing cold clear river water to separate the fibers and to perform the other hand processes involving freezing cold water, which had inhibited young would-followers of this folk-art from continuing. Few makers are found today using the old and most traditional time-honored methods. * This suite then shows the whole process of hand-made Washi paper from beginning to end in a tribute to the Ogawa village paper-maker's stamina and stubborn attitude to stick with the old ways. Papermaking by hand is now a dying art in Japan, hand-made paper makers are now few and ever dwindling. This is a graphic record of the process and a superb and fine example of Serizawa's unique "Kataezome" technique and printing process on that hand-made Washi paper. This Washi paper is of an unusual large, Deluxe broadside size and was likely made especially for Serizawa to do this series and is 33 x 40.5 cm., except for the last example which is on stiff handmade-paper which is 33 x 38 cm. printed in Aizuri or with indigo-blue ink. Suites or even single prints of Serizawa's work are now exceptionally rare & seldom found on the market for sale. The charm of his illustrations are legendary, with delicate and subtle colors. * BIBLIOGRAPHY: Fine Arts Gallery of San Diego: MINGEI FOLK ARTS OF JAPAN, p.[10-11] for a photos and essay about him. * Six prints from this series are cited & illustrated in the SHIZUOKA MUNICIPAL SERIZAWA KEISUKE MUSEUM OF ART, as item 9 on pages 16-17. * Bunsho Jugaku: NIHON NO KAMI: HANDMADE PAPERS OF JAPAN It is noteworthy to say, that Serizawa worked with Jugaku and even illustrated his book about Washi Japanese handmade papers with his lovely series of papermaking images. * Martha Longenecker in concert with the Mingei International Museum, La Jolla, 1979: SERIZAWA, an exhibition catalogue from June 23-October 14, 1979, for additional biographical notes and illustrated color examples of his work. * Color scans can be sent by email.         SET THIS HOUSE ON FIRE

New York: Random House, (1960). First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine in a Very Good example of the scarce trial state of the dustwrapper with typical light soiling and a small chip at the head of the spine. Housed in a fine cloth slipcase. Styron's third book, this copy in the very scarce trial dustwrapper of light green paper with red lettering containing only the title, author, and publisher on the spine and the author on the front cover with the title in green letters on a red background. The only other printed information is the price of $5.95 printed in red on the front inside flap. Speculation is that no more than 30 copies were issued with this dustwrapper with Styron's bibliographer, James West, stating that only 12 copies like this were issued. In any case a scarce issue.

        Midsummer Night's Dream

1960 - BRITTEN, Benjamin. A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Opera in Three Acts. Op. 64. Libretto adapted from William Shakespeare by Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears. Vocal Score by Imogen Holst and Martin Penny. London: Boosey & Hawkes, (1960). Quarto, original paper wrappers. $3800.First edition of the piano-vocal score, inscribed by Britten on the title page to Meredith Davies, who conducted the North American premiere of the opera in 1961: “For Meredith with every good wish from Benjamin Britten. Aldeburgh 1960.”Realizing that he did not have enough time to commission a libretto for a new opera to be performed at the opening of Jubilee Hall in Aldeburgh, Britten turned with his friend and confidante Peter Pears to Shakespeare, discarding half the text of Dream and distributing some of the rest among other parts; the opera was completed in under seven months, and first performed at Aldeburgh in 1960 with Pears as Flute and Britten conducting. “Shakespeare has suffered some terrible operatic settings, and yet he has also inspired four or five of the greatest operas ever written, Arguably, one of these is Britten’s adaptation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream" (Boyden, 594). “A magnificently rich operatic score” (New Grove 3:294). Meredith Davies, one of the great British conductors of the 20th century, worked closely with Britten over the course of two decades. In addition to presenting the North American premiere of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, he also conducted its 1961 performance at the Aldeburgh festival and was chosen to conduct (along with Britten himself) at the historic first performance of Britten’s War Requiem at Coventry Cathedral in 1962. Text in German and English. Signed by Davies in pencil on the front cover, occasional pencil notations throughout.Interior fine, light wear and soiling to original wraps. A near-fine inscribed copy with a fine association. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]
