        LA DOLCE VITA (1960)

Cineriz 1960 - Vintage original 10 ¼ x 12 ¾" (26 x 31 cm.) program; illustrated, saddle-stitched card wrappers, Italy. Rome: Riama Film, 1960. A striking and rare first-run program for what can easily be described as Fellini's most pivotal film, if not his finest. Unlike the more sentimental and abstract films that would follow, La Dolce Vita is an unflinching seven-day journey through 1960s Rome, with Mastroianni, a jaded journalist at the center of the story, constantly surrounded by revelry, beautiful women and a beautiful city, but no semblance of happiness or love. This deluxe program reflects Fellini's use of stark black-and-white throughout the film, with nights that are noirish and daytime sequences that are blindingly, uncomfortably bright. Throughout are lonely women, photographers, crowds, clubs, parties and general debauchery, with Mastroianni coming close enough to his humanity to touch it, but unable to do so. Especially rare to find an original Italian promotional book for this seminal Italian film. NEAR FINE with a couple of tiny stains

COBOL: Initial specifications for a COmmon Business Oriented Language

1st Edition Washington, D.c. Superintendent Of Documents Government Printing Off, 1960. FIRST EDITION of the first report on COBOL, the first computer programming language designed to run on all computers, regardless of make or model. With over a hundred pages of extremely rare related material. s computer use began to grow throughout the 1950's, there was rapidly developing a need for a programming language that was not computer-specific. As outlined in the introduction of this seminal report: "On May 28 and 29, 1959, a meeting was called in the Pentagon for the purpose of considering both the desireablility and the feasibility of establishing a common language for the programming of electronic computers in business-type data processing. Representatives from users, Government installations, computer manufacturers and other interested parties were present. There was almost unanimous agreement that the project was both desirable and feasible at this time. The concept of three committees or task forces was agreed upon... The Committee held meetings between September 18 and November 7, 1959, and proceeded steadily in its task of resolving problems and completing the language. The name 'COBOL', which suggests a COmmon Business Oriented Language, was adopted... Final editing and initial distribution of the report to the Executive Committee was accomplished December 17, 1959."The COBOL report is contained in a three-ring binder with Remington Rand UNIVAC labels on front and spine that includes a massive amount of material presumably distributed to individuals attending the "Remington Rand UNIVAC Computer Seminar for the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations" from December 5th to 9th, 1960 (as noted on general title page for binder). The binder is divided into seven sections labeled: Computer Fundamentals; System Fundamentals; Design App. of Advanced System; System Simulation and Games; System Languages; Plan Imp. of Computer Sys; and Examp. of Adv. Sys. Equipment. Among the approximately 30 printed and mimeographed items are texts of lectures, biographies of the participants, and various Remington Rand UNIVAC publications.Washington, D.C.: Superintendent of Documents, Government Printing Office, 1960. Quarto, original blue printed wrappers. Contained in a three-ring binder (with corresponding three punch holes for COBOL article) with extensive amount of related material. Housed in custom cloth box. Binder with portion of label rubbed off; generally fine condition throughout. The COBOL report itself is scarce; with all the associated material, the collection provides a possibly unique opportunity to acquire material that thoroughly documents a critical moment in the history of the computer. Very Good.

Projekt: schwarze Brille.

Fine in a near fine dust jacket with light shelfwear. Illustrated with eight pages of black-and-white photographs. Rare and desirable signed by both Robinson and Rowan. His influence spread beyond the realm of sport, as he emerged in the late 1940s and 1950s as an important national symbol of the virtue of racial integration in all aspects of American life" (ANB). Carl T. Rowan was a groundbreaking journalist whose, "passionate reporting on race relations made him one of the most highly visible and vocal black men in America" (New York Times).

"Shopping for Meat in Winter" - Original Manuscript Poem signed.

, 1960. [New York], no year (c.1960). 21,7 cm x 28 cm. 1 sheet / Folded in center. Minor remains of a rusty paperclip (only visible at the backside of the paper). Original Manuscript poem by the American poet Oscar Williams of one of his most famous poems, "Shopping for Meat in Winter". The poem is written on a piece of large quarto sized blank paper with a 'Macadam Bond' watermark, the three stanzas filling the sheet, with Williams' signature at the foot of the page. Oscar Williams was the pen name of Oscar Kaplan (December 29, 1900 ? October 10, 1964), an American anthologist and poet.nWilliams was born Oscar Kaplan in Letychiv, Ukraine, son of Jewish parents Mouzya Kaplan and Chana Rapoport. He immigrated to New York at the age of seven. His first book, Golden Darkness, was awarded the Yale Younger Poets Prize.nnAmong his influential anthologies are Master Poems of the English Language, Immortal Poems of the English Language, The Pocket Book of Modern Verse, and the Little Treasury Poetry Series, which were used in colleges and high schools around the U.S. in the 1950s and 1960s. During his lifetime, anthologies he edited sold more than two million copies, a nearly unheard amount for books of poetry. Many of his anthologies are still being republished today. Though a friend and promoter of poets like Dylan Thomas and George Barker, Williams' own poetry is not highly regarded by critics, though he published several volumes during his lifetime, and is not nearly as accomplished as the poetry of his wife, Gene Derwood (1909?1954).nnAmong Williams' poems are "Revenge," "Poem," "Poet," "The Last Supper" and "I Sing an Old Song," "The City's Face".nnShopping for Meat in Winter is a typical Williams poem, with its urban theme, forced rhyme, and attempts at replicating the neo-Romanticism of the New Apocalypse.nn Shopping for Meat in Winternn What lewd, naked and revolting shape is this?n A frozen oxtail in the butcher's shopn Long and lifeless upon the huge block of woodn On which the ogre's axe begins chop chop.n The sun like incense fumes on the smoky glass,n The street frets with people, the winter windn Throws knives, prices dangle from shoppers' mouthsn While the grim vegetables, on parade, bring to mindn The great countryside bathed in golden sleep,n The trees, the bees, the soft peace everywhere--n I think of the cow's tail, how all summer longn It beat the shapes of harps into the air.nnOscar Williams and his poet-artist wife Gene Derwood sponsored an annual $15,000 poetry award which bears their name. They lived in a penthouse of an office building on Water Street. In his later years, Oscar Williams' home near Wall Street in Manhattan served as a mecca for young poets. Asked how he chose the poems used in his anthologies, he said, "How do you pick one girl to marry? In poetry it's divine polygamy. Generally, when a poem stays with me a long time that poem delivers the goods".nnThroughout his life, Oscar Williams eschewed his Jewish background. He was always mysterious about his origins and was buried by an Episcopal Church. He was survived by a son, Strephon Kaplan-Williams, who was raised in boarding schools and hardly ever interacted with his parents. His papers are housed at the Indiana University Lilly Library.         Eine Stadt: Essen. Museum Folkwang, Essen, 18. März - 24. April 1977.

Stempel vom Vorbeitzer innen. Selten. [Vgl.         Two Autograph Letters, Signed, to Seldon Rodman].

Deya, Mallorca. 21 and 17 February 1960. - Two pages, quarto, in ink on rectos of two sheets of onion-skin letterhead. A few faint creases from mailing, otherwise very good to fine. Very good literary letters to fellow author, Selden Rodman, sending word of Graves' travels plans, discussing Rodman's work, and commenting on the literary climate of the times: "It was good to meet you at last & find that you matched up with my mental picture of you. Thanks very much for the . book which I read on the 707 on the way home. How curiously the author differs from . the down to earth English farmer's son. . Your man is a tapestry figure, and its a very fine tapestry: heroic pseudo- Roman. I loved it. . . ." and ". . . The Insiders [Rodman's 1960 book criticizing formalism in contemporary art] is a tricky project, because the American climate is so stifling to independence of creation that most of an artist's time is spent in fighting for air, instead of getting on with his job. Our village is full of refugees from the chain gang, as they call themselves, but I guess that artists in the U.S. have an easier time than writers because the market isn't quite so exacting ." Poet, dramatist and art critic Seldon Rodman shared another interest with Graves -- in 1937 he published his dramatic narrative poem about T.E. Lawrence, LAWRENCE: THE LAST CRUSADE. Accompanied by a retained carbon copy of a 19 February 1960 typed letter from Rodman in response to Graves's letters, and a clipped article from the NYT about a later, 1964 appearance by Graves at City College, New York, and his Shakespeare revisions.
