New York: Simon & Schuster, 1960. First Edition. Hard Cover with Dust Jacket. Fine/Fine. Octavo. First Printing. Author's first book SIGNED AND INSCRIBED to a close acquaintance whom he thought highly of signing his name "Ed" rather than the usual "E.L." . "To..../with admiration/Ed Doctorow/ Dec. 1965", 180pp. Bound in 1/4 white cloth over orange paper covered boards lettered in black, top edge red. Quite possibly one of the finest copies to be offered in several years. While the pages do have the usual noted age-toning, the book itself is pristine, in unclipped, pristine dust jacket. Basis for the 1967 western starring Henry Fonda, Warren Oates and Kennan Wynn; a classic tale of meanness in the old West.

An album of labels, mostly for silk and or kimono textiles which date from the Taisho (1911-25) through to about 1960.

      - n.p. c1910-1960. Embossed and partly tinted album titled 'All Samples 2598'; 25x38cm; with three preliminary colour printed sheets with collages of labels and a printed leaf of text - a metric table - at the end; some 430 labels mounted on 50 leaves. Signs of use and some labels coming adrift but all is bright and vivid. A pretty good collection spanning about half a century, most prewar. Whether or not it is the printer's collection I don't know. There is a rubber stamp inside the front cover but it is not distinct enough for this illiterate to decipher. What is clear is that these are fresh, unused labels. They have not been soaked off packets, wrappers and boxes by some keen amateur. At the beginning are some woodcuts, a few on crepe paper, some with extra embossing. The earlier ones are on heavy paper or something approaching card. There are a handful of fabric labels on one leaf.

The Poems by John Ashbery. Prints by Joan Mitchell [with:] Permanently by Kenneth Koch. Prints by Alfred Leslie [with:] Odes by Frank O'Hara. Prints by Michael Goldberg [with:] Salute by James Schuyler. Prints by Grace Hartigan

First edition. One of 200 numbered copies signed by the authors and the artists from a total edition of 225 (the 25 contributors' copies were not signed). Each volume includes five original color prints on ivory wove handmade Hahnemühle paper made directly on the screens by the individual artists. "Abstract expressionist artists . . . were not particularly involved with printmaking or encouraged to create artists' books. . . . Another significant and undervalued exception . . . are four oversize books by the New York School of poets, each paired with large, colorful screen-prints by four second-generation abstract expressionist artists. . . . Each bound volume in the untitled boxed set contains five screen-prints, including the title page and covers. This is Hartigan's only book illustrated with original prints." "These four volumes - The Poems, Permanently, Salute, and Odes - were a collaboration between four leading artists of the second-generation of abstract expressionist painters and four of their poet friends of the New York School. The screen print medium that was chosen was the perfect vehicle to convey painterly gesture and saturated color. Along with 21 Etchings and Poems (1960) published by the Morris Gallery, N.Y., these four volumes published by the Tiber Press were the only distinguished artists' books containing abstract expressionist works created during the 1950s." - Robert Flynn Johnson, Artists' Books in the Modern Era 1870-2000. The Reva and David Logan Collection of Illustrated Books. (London): Thames & Hudson, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, (2001), pp. 43, 226-227; item 142. Jerry Kelly, Riva Castleman, and Anne H.       1960 - [Avati, James] [Forester, C. S.] UNIQUE ORIGINAL ARTWORK BY JAMES AVATI FOR THE 1960 BANTAM PAPERBACK, THE AFRICAN QUEEN, BY C. S. FORESTER. One of the few extant Avati paintings illustrating major works by major 20th century authors still available to commerce. 14 x 12 inches, executed in oil on board-mounted canvas, colors still bright and vivid, in strikingly fresh condition. Museum quality framed-and-matted to a dimension of 16 x 14 inches. Avati's original painting for the first paperback version of Salinger's CATCHER IN THE RYE (1953) recently sold for $21,510.00 at auction (October, 2010). His original painting for the first paperback version (1952) of Christopher Isherwood's GOODBYE TO BERLIN (auctioned July 2009) fetched $26,290.00. James Avati (1912-2005) was often called "The Rembrandt" of 1940s and 1950s paperback illustration. He popularized authors such as William Faulkner for the average reader with alluring cover art which sported extraordinary emotional impact. His brilliance in capturing human feeling: tension or pain, suggestiveness or lust, avarice or suspicion, compassion or devotion was unrivaled during the golden age of paperback illustration. He created a visual narrative that brought characters' tragedies and yearnings to life with a tough-minded gritty realism without any compromising sentimentality. In the primary reference book "The Paperback Art Of James Avati" (Piet Schreuders & Kenneth Fulton, 2005), this painting is illustrated on p. 160. The distinction of this painting may be obvious to those familiar with Avati's work: the lush jungle green landscape which surrounds the central figures is an unusually dynamic departure for Avati and his decision to interpret the novel's most iconic image, Charlie and Rose pulling the celebrated "African Queen" through the twisted, overwhelming jungle vines of the Ulanga River in German East Africa in an attempt to outfox the World War One German Imperial Forces, has produced something very special. John Huston's film version starring Humphrey Bogart (in his only Oscar-winning role) and Katharine Hepburn is one of the American Film Institute's 100 best films ever made. The novel itself is today, along with the Horatio Hornblower series, the best known and best loved of C. S. Forester's (1899-1966) lifetime achievement of more than fifty works of fiction. James Avati produced this painting for Bantam Books #A2111 in August of 1960. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Production of Commodities by Means of Commodities

1960. First Edition . SRAFFA, Piero. Production of Commodities by Means of Commodities. Prelude to a Critique of Economic Theory. Cambridge: University Press, 1960. Octavo, original blue cloth, original dust jacket. $4200.First edition of this 20th century landmark in Neo-Ricardian economics.""After the publication of Keynes' General Theory, in 1936, the von Neumann model stands out as a major landmarkÂ… It is rivaled only by Sraffa's 96 paragraphs, published in 1960. Von Neumann and Sraffa dwarf all other economists in the 50 year period 1937 to 1987"" (Dore, et al., 10). ""Sraffa's introduction to the works [of David Ricardo] was perhaps one of the most remarkable interpretations of the tenets of Classical and Neoclassical theory in the history of economic thought. The outgrowth of these efforts was one of the longest-gestating works in economic theory. Begun in the 1920s, Sraffa's Production of Commodities by Means of Commodities, a terse, hundred-page text which finally emerged in 1960. This book solved and restated Ricardo's theory for the moderns—inspiring the 'Classical Revival' spearheaded by the Neo-Ricardians at Cambridge and elsewhere in the 1960s and 1970s. He was also the first to depict the famous 'reswitching' problem in capital theory for an industry as well as an economy—which led to the Cambridge Capital Controversy and fuelled the Neo-Ricardian School. An interesting contribution of Sraffa was his relationship to philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein—who claimed that it was Sraffa who helped provide the important stepping stones for his Philosophical Investigations—arguably the most important philosophical work of the 20th century"" ( This work has become increasingly rare, particularly over the past decade, due to a resurgent interest in neoclassical economics. Contemporary owner signature. A few neat pen annotations.Book near-fine, with mild toning to edges. Scarce price-clipped dust jacket extremely good, with slight soiling, light wear and toning to extremities. A rare and most desirable copy.

Fine- O'Brien's momentous debut, banned in Ireland because of sexual content, "charts the progress of two young Irish girls, Kate and Baba, as they escape their rural home place for the relative cosmopolitanism of Dublin. It is no accident that, in the first novel, a turning point in Kate's development is marked by her acquisition of a copy of Joyce's Dubliners [Joyce was hugely influential in O'Brien's writing life, and in 1999 she wrote a biography of him ]. . . . When asked late in his life if he would ever return to Ireland, Joyce gave the famously enigmatic reply, 'Have I ever left it?', and Edna O'Brien's relationship with her home country is complicated in ways that are similarly fraught and complex." (The Literary Encyclopedia) Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves.         The Alexandria Quartet (Justine, Balthazar, Mountolive, Clea)

Faber and Faber, London 1960 - A very solid example of the true 1st editions, 1st issues of the 4 titles which make up Durrell's masterful "Alexandria Quartet". Published separately between 1957-1960, the Quartet includes "Justine" (1957), followed in quick succession by "Balthazar" (1958), "Mountolive" (1958) and, finally, "Clea" (1960). All 4 books have held up very well and all 4 are tight and Near Fine in crisp, price-intact, VG+ or better dustjackets. Save for a bit of very light chipping at the spine crowns and just a touch of darkening along several of the spines, this is an attractive, very well-preserved set.
