        Autograph manuscript

1960. Signed. CASTRO, Fidel. Autograph manuscript. No place, circa 1960. Single original leaf, measuring 6 by 8-3/4 inches, in manuscript on recto and verso. $25,000.Rare two-page autograph manuscript, circa 1960, written entirely in the hand of Castro soon after the Bay of Pigs, possibly containing his notes for a speech at the United Nations, expressing—often passionately—his reaction to what he describes, in part, as ""our solid activity and the victorious and uncontrollable development of our revolution"" against ""expatriates and gringos,"" two pages in Spanish on a single original leaf. This rare two-page manuscript, entirely in the hand of Fidel Castro, contains text in Spanish on the recto and verso of a single leaf, with cross-outs and marginal notations. Possibly containing his notes for a speech at the United Nations, the text reads: ""Hiram of Lubrijón [unclear] [translated into English] The Revolutionary Government is very aware of the desperate efforts that is [unclear] the efforts that reflect in the last days [lined out] the open [lined out] activity that the imperialism has been realizing during the last weeks in order to promote at all cost [unclear] revolutionaries, terrorism acts, murder attempts and all type of fights that have a tendency to interfere with the revolutionary process [unclear]. It seems like they are worried within the Justice department of the United States Government, every time the anger and desperation increases, because of our solid activity and the victorious and uncontrollable development of our revolution that translates each time in a less dissimulated support of anti-revolutionaries, the war criminals and the worse [lined out, partly unclear] traitors, mercenaries of all type that [unclear] of service. [Next all lined out] The Ministry of the Arm Forces communicates the following: In the day of yesterday [unclear] communicates the headquarters of [unclear] Militia of the West.""In March of 1960, a French freighter unloading munitions from Belgium exploded in Havana taking 75 lives and injuring 200, some of whom subsequently died. The U.S. denied Cuba's accusation of sabotage but admitted that it had sought to prevent the shipment. And so it went, reaching a high point in April of the following year in the infamous CIA-organized invasion of Cuba at the Bay of Pigs. Over 100 exiles died in the attack. Close to 1,200 others were taken prisoner by the Cubans. It was later revealed that four American pilots flying for the CIA had lost their lives as well. The Bay of Pigs assault had relied heavily on the Cuban people rising up to join the invaders, but this was not to be the case. As it was, the leadership and ranks of the exile forces were riddled with former supporters and henchmen of Fulgencio Battista, the dictator overthrown by Castro, and would not have been welcomed back by the Cuban people under any circumstances.Despite the fact that the Kennedy administration was acutely embarrassed by the unmitigated defeat—indeed, because of it—a campaign of smaller-scale attacks upon Cuba was initiated almost immediately, under the rubric of Operation Mongoose. Throughout the 1960's, the Caribbean island was subjected to countless sea and air commando raids by exiles, at times accompanied by their CIA supervisors, inflicting damage upon oil refineries, chemical plants and railroad bridges, cane fields, sugar mills and sugar warehouses, infiltrating spies, saboteurs, and assassins, anything to damage the Cuban economy, promote disaffection, or make the revolution look bad. Taking the lives of Cuban militia members and others in the process, pirate attacks on Cuban fishing boats and merchant ships, bombardments of Soviet vessels docked in Cuba, an assault upon a Soviet army camp with 12 Russian soldiers reported wounded, a hotel and a theater shelled from offshore because Russians and East Europeans were supposed to be present there. These actions were not always carried out on the order of the CIA or with its foreknowledge, but the Agency could hardly plead ""rogue elephant."" It had created Operating Mongoose headquarters in Miami. Only folding crease, faint scattered foxing, and minor edge-wear. Near-fine condition.

        To Kill a Mockingbird

1960. Signed. LEE, Harper. To Kill a Mockingbird. Philadelphia and New York: J.B. Lippincott, (1960). Octavo, original half green cloth, brown paper boards, original dust jacket. Housed in custom half morocco clamshell box. $8800.First edition, fourth printing, of Lee’s cherished masterpiece—“the Huckleberry Finn of the 20th century”—warmly inscribed by the author in the year of publication, signing as Nelle Harper Lee, a form of her signature she used only for close friends and family: “To Marion —— —— with my best wishes, Nelle Harper Lee, September 12, 1960.”Lee's indelible depiction of life in a small Alabama town during the Jim Crow era immediately became a bestseller, quickly established itself on required reading lists in classrooms across the country, and was honored with the 1961 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. It was ""the Huckleberry Finn of the 20th century,"" declared biographer Charles Shields: ""It holds up an ideal of tolerance and compassion that was laudable and very teachable."" Novelist Scott Turow reflected on the book's significance after Lee's death in 2016: ""To Kill a Mockingbird is one of those works of popular literature that was like a divining rod pointing to then-subterranean forces of change… It is also a beautiful book, with a charming voice, perfect characterization and a knowledge that permeates every syllable… Ms. Lee remains an enigmatic figure, but her one real novel will be an intimate part of our lives for a long, long time to come"" (New York Times). Stated fourth printing, in stated fourth printing dust jacket with contemporary blurbs on rear panel. New York Public Library's Books of the Century, 201. Occasional light foxing. Small ink mark to dedication page. Text block slightly cocked. Spine lightly soiled, extremities slightly rubbed. Expert restoration to original dust jacket.         Truman Capote refutes statements published in an article in “McCall’s” about Marlene Dietrich’s presence at rehearsals of his and Harold Arlen’s 1954 musical, “House of Flowers.”

Costa Brava, Spain, June 8, 1960. 7" x 10". "Autograph Letter Signed “Truman Capote,” 1p, 7” x 10”. Costa Brava, Spain, June 8, 1960. To Mr. Martinson. On his personal “Truman Capote” stationery. Four file holes in upper blank margin. Fine condition. In full, “As regards your letter of May 19th – I have not read the article in ‘McCall’s’; but I can most definitely say not only was Miss Dietrich an invited visitor to the ‘House of Flowers’ rehearsals, but a very welcome and helpful one; and, far from causing any dissension among the company, she was very much liked by everyone, at least to my knowledge. Her presence was muchly appreciated.”The article to which Capote refers, “The Dietrich Legend” by Bill Davidson, appeared in the March 1960 issue of “McCall’s” magazine. In the letter here offered, Capote refutes Davidson’s statements concerning “House of Flowers” which ran for 165 performances on Broadway, December 30, 1954 to May 21, 1955. Capote wrote the book, Harold Arlen wrote the music, and both collaborated on the lyrics. Stars included Pearl Bailey, Alvin Ailey, Juanita Hall, Geoffrey Holder, and Diahann Carroll in her Broadway debut.Steven Bach wrote in “Marlene Dietrich: Life and Legend” (New York: William Morrow 7 Co., 1992) that Dietrich “served as den mother and charlady for the cast of [Harold] Arlen and Truman Capote’s musical ‘House of Flowers’ when it was in trouble out of town, advising Pearl Bailey on stage jewelry (big rhinestones, not small diamonds)…”"

        Selection. No. 1, Spring 1960

(Chico): (Chico State University). 1960. The first issue of the Chico State literary magazine, of which Carver was a founding editor. The biographical introduction to the included William Carlos Williams poem, "The Gossips," is, as far as we can tell, the first piece of writing Carver published other than a 1958 letter to the editor of the Chico State student newspaper. The introduction gives a brief summary of Williams' life, a capsule summary and analysis of his poetry, and a brief, partial listing of the honors and awards he had won. Carver's first work of fiction, "Furious Seasons," was published in a later issue of Selection that same year. A very uncommon, early appearance in print by Carver. This copy bears the ownership name and address of Raymond Carver's brother, James. This is the only copy we have ever seen. Near fine in stapled wrappers. Softcover. Near Fine.

THE AFRICAN QUEEN -- UNIQUE ORIGINAL ARTWORK BY JAMES AVATI FOR THE 1960 BANTAM PAPERBACK, THE AFRICAN QUEEN, BY C S FORESTER

1960. [Avati, James] [Forester, C. S.] UNIQUE ORIGINAL ARTWORK BY JAMES AVATI FOR THE 1960 BANTAM PAPERBACK, THE AFRICAN QUEEN, BY C. S. FORESTER. One of the few extant Avati paintings illustrating major works by major 20th century authors still available to commerce. 14 x 12 inches, executed in oil on board-mounted canvas, colors still bright and vivid, in strikingly fresh condition. Museum quality framed-and-matted to a dimension of 16 x 14 inches. Avati's original painting for the first paperback version of Salinger's CATCHER IN THE RYE (1953) recently sold for $21,510.00 at auction (October, 2010). His original painting for the first paperback version (1952) of Christopher Isherwood's GOODBYE TO BERLIN (auctioned July 2009) fetched $26,290.00. James Avati (1912-2005) was often called "The Rembrandt" of 1940s and 1950s paperback illustration. He popularized authors such as William Faulkner for the average reader with alluring cover art which sported extraordinary emotional impact. His brilliance in capturing human feeling: tension or pain, suggestiveness or lust, avarice or suspicion, compassion or devotion was unrivaled during the golden age of paperback illustration. He created a visual narrative that brought characters' tragedies and yearnings to life with a tough-minded gritty realism without any compromising sentimentality. In the primary reference book "The Paperback Art Of James Avati" (Piet Schreuders & Kenneth Fulton, 2005), this painting is illustrated on p. 160. The distinction of this painting may be obvious to those familiar with Avati's work: the lush jungle green landscape which surrounds the central figures is an unusually dynamic departure for Avati and his decision to interpret the novel's most iconic image, Charlie and Rose pulling the celebrated "African Queen" through the twisted, overwhelming jungle vines of the Ulanga River in German East Africa in an attempt to outfox the World War One German Imperial Forces, has produced something very special. John Huston's film version starring Humphrey Bogart (in his only Oscar-winning role) and Katharine Hepburn is one of the American Film Institute's 100 best films ever made. The novel itself is today, along with the Horatio Hornblower series, the best known and best loved of C. S. Forester's (1899-1966) lifetime achievement of more than fifty works of fiction. James Avati produced this painting for Bantam Books #A2111 in August of 1960. . Signed. Unbound. Near Fine. Illus. by James Avati.

Small trivial mark to spine, otherwise fine. Colour illuminated pages reproduced by collotype and stencil. The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, Blake's boldest and most directly philosophical work, was described by S. Foster Damon as "Blake's Principia, in which he announced a new concept of the universe" (Blake Dictionary). The original stencil, guide sheet, and plate suite included at the rear of this deluxe copy is the final plate for Blake's "Memorable Fancy", in which, Blake having boldly confounded a judging Angel by imposing his own counter fantasy upon it, the Angel complains "Thy phantasy has imposed upon me & thou oughtest to be ashamed." To which Blake answers, "We impose on one another, & it is but lost time to converse with you whose works are only Analytics." [Attributes: First Edition]

        WELCOME TO HARD TIMES

New York: Simon & Schuster, 1960. First Edition. Hard Cover with Dust Jacket. Fine/Fine. Octavo. First Printing. Author's first book SIGNED AND INSCRIBED to a close acquaintance whom he thought highly of signing his name "Ed" rather than the usual "E.L." . "To..../with admiration/Ed Doctorow/ Dec. 1965", 180pp. Bound in 1/4 white cloth over orange paper covered boards lettered in black, top edge red. Quite possibly one of the finest copies to be offered in several years. While the pages do have the usual noted age-toning, the book itself is pristine, in unclipped, pristine dust jacket. Basis for the 1967 western starring Henry Fonda, Warren Oates and Kennan Wynn; a classic tale of meanness in the old West.

Holy Cats By Andy Warhol's Mother

Self-published, 1960. 1st. Hardcover. Collectible; Very Good. One of the scarcest-- and most eccentric-- of Warhol's early titles, this offbeat, self-published 1960 collaboration ("Reading Warhol", pgs. 124-130) between the artist and his mother, Julia Warhola, incorporates Julia's love of cats and angels. The slim octavo consists of 21 photolithographs on various "color wove" paper. The plates are immaculate, with no markings or wear of any kind. The pictorial boards are clean and well-preserved as well. Very light age-toning to the panel edges and mild darkening along the spine. By any standard though, this is a very solid, easily VG to VG+ copy.

        PEEPING TOM (1960)

Anglo-Amalgamated Film Distributors 1960 - Vintage original 30 x 20" (76.2 x 50.8 cm.) advance double crown teaser poster, UK. Karlheinz Bohm, dir: Michael Powell; Anglo-Amalgamated Film Distributors. British advance teaser poster for the classic 1960 film. The British double crown format poster for the film turns up from time to time, but this advance issue -- which does not state the film's title -- is an extreme rarity. Noted director Powell's most controversial film, about a serial killer who films his female victims as they are dying. Reviled by critics on its release and today considered a masterpiece, it is the second of three feature films the director made after parting ways with his longtime filmmaking partner Emeric Pressburger. Ostensibly a film about a killer with serious Freudian issues, but later reassessed as much more conceptual and complex. Roger Ebert pointed out famously in his 1999 review of the film that the audience is implicated as much as the killer. "Movies make us into voyeurs. We sit in the dark, watching other people's lives. It is the bargain the cinema strikes with us, although most films are too well-behaved to mention it." Martin Scorsese is probably the most famous fan of the film, and takes Ebert's argument further, saying "I have always felt that Peeping Tom and 8 say everything that can be said about film-making, about the process of dealing with film, the objectivity and subjectivity of it and the confusion between the two. 8 captures the glamour and enjoyment of film-making, while Peeping Tom shows the aggression of it, how the camera violates. From studying them you can discover everything about people who make films, or at least people who express themselves through films." On linen, there has been some skillful touch-up to a few abrasions in the blank black top of poster, and some routine fold line conservation, poster is overall very nice, NEAR VERY GOOD.

A supplement to Elwes' monograph of the genus Lilium. Parts I to IX.

London. Dulau & Co. Ltd. / The Royal Horticultural Society. 1933-1940; 1960. NINE PARTS, 30 handcolored lithographed plates and 10 color collotype plates (TOTAL OF 40 plates), accompanying text sheets, decorative paper wrappers, large folio approximately 22 x 15 inches (56 x 38 cm). Parts I to VII: Plates in very good to fine condition with occasional very minor faults at edges (bump to corner, light creasing, tiny edge tear). Wrappers have wear to spines, occasional light wear to edges, 1 x 1 inch lightly discolored area at lower left corner of front wrappers from removal of label. Parts VIII and IX: plates in very good to fine condition (first plate in last volume is loose); slight wear and soiling to wrappers, discolored area at lower left corner of front wrappers from removal of label. This important botanical monograph, the Supplement to Henry Elwes 1880 Monograph of the Genus Lilium highlights the extraordinary wealth of China and surrounding countries in the species Lilium. As Elwes' friend and collaborator Arthur Grove states in the introduction to the Supplement: "When Elwes prepared his Monograph about fifty species of Lilium were known to exist, and it was then the general opinion among experts that few remained to be discovered. With his customary acumen, Elwes himself expressed the view that 'The only regions from which much novelty can be expected are the Eastern Himalayas and the immense tract of unexplored and difficult mountain country which surrounds our Indian Empire on the north and east, and which lies round the head-waters of the Irrawaddy, the Bramputra, and the Yang-tse-kiang. --- The Corean peninsula may also produce some new species of Lily; but though the flora of that country is absolutely unknown to us, it may be expected that any indigenous plants of great beauty or horticultural value have already found their way into the gardens of Japan.' These words were written in 1880, some years before the botanical exploration of Western China began, and Elwes proved a wiser prophet than he knew. At that time, however, no one in England suspected that the area indicated by him was soon to prove richer in lilies than either Japan or Western North America." The first 7 parts of the Supplement were issued between 1933 and 1940. These were limited to 250 copies with 30 handcolored plates drawn and lithographed by Miss Lilian Snelling. The large folio size is used to great advantage to showcase the stunning flowers, with botanical details to the side. Each plate is accompanied by a descriptive text of 2 to 4 pages, including the habitat of the plant. More than half of these 30 plates feature plants from China, with all but 3 of the 30 from countries in Asia. This Supplement merits a place in Sitwell and Blunt's Great Flower Books, where it is noted: "A work of the greatest interest and value to all Lily growers. The Supplement is considerably finer both in text and illustration than the original monograph." (p.94). In 1960 and 1962 a further two parts were sponsored by the Royal Horticultural Society, containing "the new lilies introduced since 1933 by Kingdon Ward and other collectors. The text is by Dr. W.B. Turrill, F.R.S, lately Keeper of the Herbarium at Kew...The illustrations are by Miss Margaret Stones, another great botanical artist, who is following worthily in the steps of Miss Snelling." (from the introduction by F.C. Stern). In part VIII are five beautiful color plates of lilies, two of which are from North America - Lilium rubescens (southern Oregon, California) and Lilium Michiganense (Canada and Mid west USA),plus two of Asian origin (Yunnan and Manipur). In part IX, four of the flowers depicted are from North America - Lilium washingtonianum var. purpurascens (north-western California and Oregon); Lilium pitkinense (California); Lilium Pardalinum var. giganteum (Northern California); Lilium kelleyanum variant (California); the last is from the Himalayas.
