Simon and Schuster, 1960. Quarto (Pages darkened as usual, otherwise a near fine copy.) Original printed wrappers (only minor wear at edges, corners clean, spine straight and tight). FIRST EDITION, AN OUTSTANDING ASSOCIATION COPY, WITH A LENGTHY INSCRIPTION BY SILVERSTEIN in blue ink to Harper & Row Sales Executive Frank Scioscia on the inner front wrapper: "Dear Frank -- Thank you for telling me that S+S [Simon & Schuster] was about to reprint this book so that I could offer my assistance to Johnathan who could ask me to do more drawings so that the book could become so large that S+S would refuse to do it so that I could bring it to Harpers so that Wynn would want it so that I could spend this last year working on it so that it could become a masterpiece so that its disgustingly obscene content could cost us all our lives and livelihood.         Fiftieth Anniversary Report of the Harvard Class of 1910

Cambridge, MA: The Cosmos Press, 1960. 8vo. 561pp. Original red cloth. With the stamps of the Harvard Club of New York, including their discarded stamp. A scarce T.S. Eliot item, his lengthy autobiographical entry occupying pages 133-136. Members of the class were asked to send in their current contact information, along with autobiographies summarizing the half century that had passed since their graduation. Eliot gives his address at Faber & Faber, his occupation as "Author and Publisher", lists his honorary degrees and awards and opens his text: "What the Secretary appears to be bent upon extracting from his wretched classmates is a full-length autobiography. If he really wants everything he says he wants he should have provided a good deal more paper, but I am glad he didn't. I don't see why I should again review my life 'since graduation': I did my best to oblige him in this respect 25 years ago, and that statement can stand, with two important qualifications-- I now prefer claret to burgundy, and I prefer Inspector Maigret to Arsène Lupin. So I shall begin with 1933: that is a good date for me, as that is the year in which I broke into Show Business..." Despite his playful/combative opening tone, Eliot goes on at length to list his many publications and accomplishments, and ends by saying that without his marriage to Valerie Fletcher "no achievement or honour could give me satisfaction at all." Another lengthy entry is provided by his classmate Walter Lippmann. Accompanied by the printed pamphlet of the speeches given by Lippmann and Clarence Little and a copy of the chairman's report. Gallup C642. Spine a bit faded and with a few soilmarks, a few bumps to board edges.

        Ruslan and Ludmila

      - Moscow: GIHL, 1960. Illustrated by Tatjana Mawrina. First edition thus, in Russian (pp. 150 ). A presentation copy for Rockwell and Sally Kent, signed and with a complimentary note from Lavrenty Yaroshenko, ‘Dear friends Mr. Rockwell Kent and Mrs. Sally Kent from actor [and] soloist Kirov Opera, [signed] Lavrentiy Yaroshenko (Farlaf and Ruslan). Leningrad, Yuny 13, 1962.’ From the library and with the bookplate of American artist Rockwell Kent, a theatre ticket to the performance enclosed. Folio (30 cm ) in faux vellum, story-telling cat from Kazan on front cover; lavishly decorated and illustrated with seven coloured plates and decorations on every page in a colourful informal style reminiscent of traditional illustrated Russian lubki, a kind of chapbook which portrayed traditional stories like the tale of Ruslan and Ludmila for appreciative if largely unlettered readers. Yaroshenko (1909- 1975) was, as he says, a celebrated principal singer (bass) with the Kirov, now once again called the Mariinsky Theatre. Tatjana Mawrina (1902- 2014) was a winner of the Hans Christian Andersen Award for illustrators of children’s books and the co-author of a book on early Russian icons. Rockwell Kent (1881- 1971), of course, along with many an artist and intellectual who flourished early in the twentieth century, was sympathetic to various reformist political movements and, in the aftermath of the second world war, supported efforts to bring a lasting peace. In the 1950’s Kent publicly supported rapproachement between the U.S. and the Soviet Union and for his efforts was awarded the Lenin Peace Prize in 1960, a fact which may partly explain the warmth of Yaroshenko’s note. A few spots to the covers, mild waving to heavy paper stock. A clean, bright, sound copy. From Kent’s library. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Werke * G A N Z L E D E R - V o r z u g s a u s g a b e in 10 Bänden (vollständig)

Stuttgart, Ernst Klett Verlag, 1960 - 1965. Hechle Family collection of letters, greetings cards, postcards and other material from John Betjeman. Includes an early version of the poem 'Cornish Cliffs' and, remarkably, two signed watercolours by JB.

Ten autograph letters signed, 6 postcards signed, 11 greetings cards signed. Autograph manuscript signed of the poem 'Treligga Cliffs, Delabole'. Two signed watercolours.A charming and unusual archive. Most of the items are addressed to Rea and Joan Hechle or their son Philip ( Pip ) and his wife Ros. The watercolours were presented to Joan's mother, Nell Oakley. The Oakley family were central to the social life at Trebetherick during the summer holidays of Betjeman's youth. The friendships formed then continued throughout his life and his affection for the families involved and for Trebetherick and North Cornwall in general is well documented. Three items stand out amongst this collection. The first of which is the manuscript poem 'Treligga Cliffs, Delabole' dated May 1965. This poem eventually became 'Cornish Cliffs', a radically re-worked version, and was published in the collection 'High and Low' in 1966. The other two items are the two watercolours. These are rarities - I have found only one record of a genuine Betjeman watercolour appearing for sale ( view of a country house, painted 1948 ) and I haven't found any references to him painting in the various biographies of JB or in his published correspondence. It's well known that he was a prolific doodler and casual sketcher but his painting was obviously a pleasure that he rarely had time for. The two views appear to have been painted in a garden with an outlook over the dune-like hills that surround Trebetherick. They each have signed ( 'John B.' ) presentation inscriptions to Nell Oakley for her birthday in 1966.
