Twelve Autograph Letters Signed and four Typed Letters Signed to literary magazine De Gids. 16 leaves recto. 1960-1970.

      - * Highly interesting collection of elegant letters by the young Dutch poet and essayist (1936-2003), written from several adressess (in Bilthoven, Bonn, Amersfoort, Utrecht, Groningen and Tull en 't Waal), to editors of De Gids. Jellema repeatedly offers poetry to the renowned literary magazine. In 1960 his very first poems were published in the autumn issue of De Gids, according to plan: 'graag onder eigen naam publiceren'. Also about his first book publication Klein Gloria (1961). The initial enthusiasm of the editors for Jellema's poetry diminishes after only a year. On the first letter by Jellema from July 8, 1960 De Gids editor Hoornik jots down in capitals: 'vóór', but Bert Voeten commented in a report from April 12, 1961: 'Tegen - bizonder zwak en 'afgekeken''. Two of these editor's reports are attached, as are five carbon letters by editor Lekkerkerker to Jellema. In a self-conscious letter from February 21, 1963 Jellema asks Voeten to motivate his rejection: 'Ik zou U namelijk willen vragen, mij te schrijven waarom deze gedichten de critiek niet konden doorstaan'.         Albert Schweitzer Signed Lithograph.

Signed by the artist William Sharp in pencil. Inscribed by Nobel Peace Prize winner Albert Schweitzer, "A Mr John Zuber avec mes bonnes pensees Albert Schweitzer. Lambarene 13. Juin 1960." The translation reads, "To Mr John Zuber with my good wishes Albert Schweitzer Lambarene 13th June 1960." Schweitzer received the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize for his philosophy of "Reverence for Life", expressed in many ways, but most famously in founding and sustaining the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Lambarene, now in Gabon, west central Africa. The lithograph measures 14.5 inches by 11.5 inches. Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 19 inches by 22.5 inches. A unique piece, rare and desirable.     Artist William Sharp was born in Lemberg, Austria, where he attended college and the Academy for Arts and Industry. He later studied in Krakow, Poland, and in Berlin and Munich, Germany. He began his career as a designer of stained-glass windows and as a painter of murals. He served in the German army during World War I. After the war he became a newspaper artist in Berlin and a well-known etcher. He later worked as an artist at Esquire, where he continued to produce political cartoons, Sharp also illustrated stories by Ernest Hemingway and Thomas Mann. He was also a longtime contributor to The New York Times Magazine and also worked for Life, Colliers, Coronet, and The New York Post. Sharp also did book illustrations for several leading publishers, with Dickens' Old Curiosity Shop for Heritage Press being his first assignment. He illustrated several books for limited editions, including The Diary of Samuel Pepys in 10 volumes. His work is represented in many museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Library of Congress, the Carnegie Institute, and the New York Public Library.

Collection of 12 color slides featuring actor Steve McQueen

N.p.: N.p., 1960. A collection of eight mounted color 35mm transparency slides and four unmounted 6cm color transparencies of Steve McQueen likely taken during the 1960s. Images include various shots of McQueen as he appeared in "Sand Pebbles" (1966), "The Cincinnati Kid" (1965), "The Magnificent Seven" (1960), "Baby the Rain Must Fall" (1965), and "Soldier in the Rain" (1963), seen holding Tuesday Weld. The collection also includes a few candid shots of McQueen, including one at the 1967 Golden Globe awards accompanied by Natalie Wood, and one in 1963 where he wears white swim trunks, amongst others. One of America's most popular and best known anti-heroes, Steve McQueen's wild, early life in many ways mimicked the gun toting, car racing rogues he would go on to play in films. After being sent to a school for troubled adolescents, having frequently been caught in juvenile street gangs, and going on to straighten out by serving in the Marines, he finally found his way into acting once his military financial aid allowed him to begin studying. This archive features work from some of his earlier films, which would win him such great acclaim that in 1972 he was the highest-grossing actor in the world. 35mm slides 2 x 2 inches. 6mm slides 2.5 x 2.5 inches. All slides Very Good plus or better.

Memorias De La Sierra Maestra (Signed)

Habana: Editorial Tierra Nueva, 1960 32mo, green and red pictorial wraps with a silhouette of a palm tree. 172 pp. Signed by the author on the title page: "Saludos de José Pardo Llada". Patronato del Libro Popular. Primera Serie, Volumen I. An eyewitness account of the guerrilla war waged in the Sierra Maestra with the revolutionary forces before the taking of Havana. Pardo Llada was a radio announcer -- at one time the most popular announcer in Cuba -- in the 1940s who was critical of Grau's government. In 1950, he was elected to the House of Representatives and over the next several years formed a deep personal friendship with Fidel Castro, who would visit his home nearly daily (and once drove Pardo Llada's wife to the hospital to deliver a child). When Batista took power in 1952, Pardo Llada was suspended from broadcasting 42 times and was imprisoned on a number of occasions. In 1958, he joined the revolutionary forces in Sierra Maestra and fought alongside Castro, Che Guevara, Camillo Cienfuegos and others. However Pardo Llada quickly went from ardent supporter (he waived his copyright and donated all proceeds from the publication of this book to the agrarian reform efforts) to a disillusioned exile: in 1961 he grew disappointed with the communist leanings of the government and defected to Columbia while Castro denounced him as a traitor, declaring in a speech that he was the sort of man who couldn't see past the end of his nose and would be mistaken his entire life until he eventually committed suicide via sleeping pills. Pardo Llada died in 2009 at the age of 86 (of natural causes). Front wrap nearly completely detached, previous owner's signatures on front wrap and ffep, wraps heavily soiled and foxed, also heavy foxing to endpapers and final pages of text. Scarce.

Die Schützentaler und Schützenmedaillen der Schweiz. Die Schützenjetons der Schweiz, 2 Bände: 2 Bde [Gebundene Ausgabe] Jürg Richter (Autor)

Battenberg Gietl, 1960. Beginning in Redwood City, the travellers made their way with wagon and mules southwards to Searsville (now Woodside) on the Old La Honda Road, San Gregorio, Pescadero and reaching as far south as Santa Cruz. The author provides almost daily desciptions of their adventures, camping sites, fishing, hiking and much more. This is a bound typescript of the account originally written by Wilhelmina de Fremery to share her adventure with her family in Holland. It was originally written in Dutch and later translated into English by her brother, Henri M. Suermondr " enable the American-born children to read it with understanding, but no pictures were included in that version." His text was used in this verbatim copy with the addition of reproductions of the original photographs.
