THE AFRICAN QUEEN -- UNIQUE ORIGINAL ARTWORK BY JAMES AVATI FOR THE 1960 BANTAM PAPERBACK, THE AFRICAN QUEEN, BY C. S. FORESTER.

1960 - [Avati, James] [Forester, C. S.] UNIQUE ORIGINAL ARTWORK BY JAMES AVATI FOR THE 1960 BANTAM PAPERBACK, THE AFRICAN QUEEN, BY C. S. FORESTER. One of the few extant Avati paintings illustrating major works by major 20th century authors still available to commerce. 14 x 12 inches, executed in oil on board-mounted canvas, colors still bright and vivid, in strikingly fresh condition. Museum quality framed-and-matted to a dimension of 16 x 14 inches. Avati's original painting for the first paperback version of Salinger's CATCHER IN THE RYE (1953) recently sold for $21,510.00 at auction (October, 2010). His original painting for the first paperback version (1952) of Christopher Isherwood's GOODBYE TO BERLIN (auctioned July 2009) fetched $26,290.00. James Avati (1912-2005) was often called "The Rembrandt" of 1940s and 1950s paperback illustration. He popularized authors such as William Faulkner for the average reader with alluring cover art which sported extraordinary emotional impact. His brilliance in capturing human feeling: tension or pain, suggestiveness or lust, avarice or suspicion, compassion or devotion was unrivaled during the golden age of paperback illustration. He created a visual narrative that brought characters' tragedies and yearnings to life with a tough-minded gritty realism without any compromising sentimentality. In the primary reference book "The Paperback Art Of James Avati" (Piet Schreuders & Kenneth Fulton, 2005), this painting is illustrated on p. 160. The distinction of this painting may be obvious to those familiar with Avati's work: the lush jungle green landscape which surrounds the central figures is an unusually dynamic departure for Avati and his decision to interpret the novel's most iconic image, Charlie and Rose pulling the celebrated "African Queen" through the twisted, overwhelming jungle vines of the Ulanga River in German East Africa in an attempt to outfox the World War One German Imperial Forces, has produced something very special. John Huston's film version starring Humphrey Bogart (in his only Oscar-winning role) and Katharine Hepburn is one of the American Film Institute's 100 best films ever made. The novel itself is today, along with the Horatio Hornblower series, the best known and best loved of C. S. Forester's (1899-1966) lifetime achievement of more than fifty works of fiction. James Avati produced this painting for Bantam Books #A2111 in August of 1960. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Production of Commodities by Means of Commodities

1960. First Edition . SRAFFA, Piero. Production of Commodities by Means of Commodities. Prelude to a Critique of Economic Theory. Cambridge: University Press, 1960. Octavo, original blue cloth, original dust jacket. $4200.First edition of this 20th century landmark in Neo-Ricardian economics.""After the publication of Keynes' General Theory, in 1936, the von Neumann model stands out as a major landmarkÂ… It is rivaled only by Sraffa's 96 paragraphs, published in 1960. Von Neumann and Sraffa dwarf all other economists in the 50 year period 1937 to 1987"" (Dore, et al., 10). ""Sraffa's introduction to the works [of David Ricardo] was perhaps one of the most remarkable interpretations of the tenets of Classical and Neoclassical theory in the history of economic thought. The outgrowth of these efforts was one of the longest-gestating works in economic theory. Begun in the 1920s, Sraffa's Production of Commodities by Means of Commodities, a terse, hundred-page text which finally emerged in 1960. This book solved and restated Ricardo's theory for the moderns—inspiring the 'Classical Revival' spearheaded by the Neo-Ricardians at Cambridge and elsewhere in the 1960s and 1970s. He was also the first to depict the famous 'reswitching' problem in capital theory for an industry as well as an economy—which led to the Cambridge Capital Controversy and fuelled the Neo-Ricardian School. An interesting contribution of Sraffa was his relationship to philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein—who claimed that it was Sraffa who helped provide the important stepping stones for his Philosophical Investigations—arguably the most important philosophical work of the 20th century"" (newschool.edu). This work has become increasingly rare, particularly over the past decade, due to a resurgent interest in neoclassical economics. Contemporary owner signature. A few neat pen annotations.Book near-fine, with mild toning to edges. Scarce price-clipped dust jacket extremely good, with slight soiling, light wear and toning to extremities. A rare and most desirable copy.

Fine- O'Brien's momentous debut, banned in Ireland because of sexual content, "charts the progress of two young Irish girls, Kate and Baba, as they escape their rural home place for the relative cosmopolitanism of Dublin. It is no accident that, in the first novel, a turning point in Kate's development is marked by her acquisition of a copy of Joyce's Dubliners [Joyce was hugely influential in O'Brien's writing life, and in 1999 she wrote a biography of him ]. . . . When asked late in his life if he would ever return to Ireland, Joyce gave the famously enigmatic reply, 'Have I ever left it?', and Edna O'Brien's relationship with her home country is complicated in ways that are similarly fraught and complex." Moments Preserved

1960. First Edition . Signed. PENN, Irving. Moments Preserved. New York: Simon and Schuster, (1960). Large quarto, original beige cloth, original dust jacket, original pictorial slipcase. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $6200.First edition of PennÂ’s first book, an especially scarce presentation/association copy warmly inscribed by him to the noted Swedish art critic and author who would become a longtime correspondent, ""For Ulf Hard af Segerstad, With all good wishes, Irving Penn, New York 1962."" Accompanying the book is Penn's autograph note, penned and signed by him on a card printed with his New York address: ""Oct. 1, 1962. Dr. Mr. Ulf Hard af Segerstad, I have just recently been looking at clippings of various reviews of my late book Moments Preserved [underlining in original]. My wife, who is Swedish, translated your review for me with great care. I don't wish to embarrass you, but I would like you to know that it was the only review written on either side of the Atlantic which understood my aim, and was generous enough to say that it had been in some measure achieved. With many thanks and good wishes, Sincerely yours, Irving Penn.""This very scarce presentation/association copy of Moments Preserved, Penn's groundbreaking first publication, is warmly inscribed by him to the noted Scandinavian art critic and author, Dr. Ulf Hard af Segerstad, who became a longtime friend and correspondent with the photographer, and would co-author a volume in tribute to Penn's wife, the renowned Swedish-born model, titled, Photographs: A Donation in Memory of Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn (1996). This memorable copy of Moments Preserved also includes a laid-in autograph note, penned and signed by Penn on the recto and verso of a card printed with his New York address. Dated October 1, 1962, Penn's signed autograph note likely signals the beginning of the friendship between the two men, with Penn clearly indicating his appreciation for Segerstad's review of Moments Preserved and affectionately mentioning his wife, Lise Fonssagrives-Penn, who translated Segerstad's review for Penn. Lise Fonssagrives-Penn, who married the photographer in 1950, remains heralded as ""one of the most elegant women ever to wear a dress. She was at the height of her career in 1949 when Time put her on its coverÂ… She was also the apple of Irving Penn's eye"" (Vogue). To Alexander Liberman of Conde Nast Publications, publisher of Vogue, ""the Penns represented 'an extraordinary relationship between a photographer and a model. She was the inspiration and subject of some of Penn's greatest photographs'"" (New York Times). This wonderful inscribed first edition highlights not only Penn's appreciation for Segerstad's review, but also signals an important connection between the photographer, his wife, and Segerstad. Penn, one of his era's most accomplished photographers and a major contributor to Vogue, has been lauded for his ""imagery of extreme elegance"" (Blodgett, 101). ""An overview of an astonishingly busy careerÂ… Moments Preserved gathers Penn's vast variety of enthusiasmsÂ… Penn reinvented the classic daylight studio portrait for a more casual time, undercutting its formality but heightening its potential as a revealing performance"" (Roth, 158). Segerstad's own publications include: Scandinavian Design, Modern Finnish Design, and Modern Scandinavian Furniture. With an introduction by Alexander Liberman. A fine inscribed copy and laid-in signed autograph note.

        Lithographs of Marc Chagall

1960. First Edition . (CHAGALL, Marc) CAIN, Julien and SORLIER, Charles. The Lithographs of Chagall. Monte Carlo, New York, Boston: André Sauret; George Braziller; Boston Book and Art Shop, 1960-86. Six volumes. Folio, original beige cloth, original dust jackets (themselves original lithographs), original acetates. $11,500.First editions in English of the six-volume catalogue raisonné of ChagallÂ’s lithographs, richly illustrated with 28 original lithographs (including the dust jackets).""Chagall's emblematic irrationality shook off all outside influences: color governed his compositions, calling up chimerical processions of memory where reality and the imaginary are woven into a single legend, born in Vitebsk and dreamed in Paris"" (Dictionary of Modern Art). For Chagall, the medium of lithography did not come easily. Printer Fernand Mourlot ran a lithography press where such greats as Braque, Matisse, Picasso, Miró and Chagall came to have their designs printed and to learn about this still nascent print-making process. ""For many long months Chagall came and worked tirelessly, and his dissatisfaction allowed him to have only a few of his first attempts printed"" (Sorlier, 45). Volumes I and II contain 24 of the original 28 lithographs published throughout the series; the dust jackets and frontispieces of Volumes III and IV account for the remaining four. (Volume V was published near the end of Chagall's life, and Volume VI was published posthumously.) All were issued separately over a period of 26 years and are very scarce as a complete set. All volumes published simultaneously in English and French. Volumes I and II also issued in a deluxe signed limited edition of only 100 and 150 copies. Gauss, 391. Freitag 1914. Midsummer Night's Dream

1960. First Edition . Signed. BRITTEN, Benjamin. A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Opera in Three Acts. Op. 64. Libretto adapted from William Shakespeare by Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears. Vocal Score by Imogen Holst and Martin Penny. London: Boosey & Hawkes, (1960). Quarto, original paper wrappers. $3800.First edition of the piano-vocal score, inscribed by Britten on the title page to Meredith Davies, who conducted the North American premiere of the opera in 1961: “For Meredith with every good wish from Benjamin Britten. Aldeburgh 1960.”Realizing that he did not have enough time to commission a libretto for a new opera to be performed at the opening of Jubilee Hall in Aldeburgh, Britten turned with his friend and confidante Peter Pears to Shakespeare, discarding half the text of Dream and distributing some of the rest among other parts; the opera was completed in under seven months, and first performed at Aldeburgh in 1960 with Pears as Flute and Britten conducting. “Shakespeare has suffered some terrible operatic settings, and yet he has also inspired four or five of the greatest operas ever written, Arguably, one of these is Britten’s adaptation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream"" (Boyden, 594). “A magnificently rich operatic score” (New Grove 3:294). Meredith Davies, one of the great British conductors of the 20th century, worked closely with Britten over the course of two decades. In addition to presenting the North American premiere of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, he also conducted its 1961 performance at the Aldeburgh festival and was chosen to conduct (along with Britten himself) at the historic first performance of Britten’s War Requiem at Coventry Cathedral in 1962. Text in German and English. Signed by Davies in pencil on the front cover, occasional pencil notations throughout.Interior fine, light wear and soiling to original wraps. A near-fine inscribed copy with a fine association.

        Autograph manuscript

1960. Signed. CASTRO, Fidel. Autograph manuscript. No place, circa 1960. Single original leaf, measuring 6 by 8-3/4 inches, in manuscript on recto and verso. $25,000.Rare two-page autograph manuscript, circa 1960, written entirely in the hand of Castro soon after the Bay of Pigs, possibly containing his notes for a speech at the United Nations, expressing—often passionately—his reaction to what he describes, in part, as ""our solid activity and the victorious and uncontrollable development of our revolution"" against ""expatriates and gringos,"" two pages in Spanish on a single original leaf. This rare two-page manuscript, entirely in the hand of Fidel Castro, contains text in Spanish on the recto and verso of a single leaf, with cross-outs and marginal notations. Possibly containing his notes for a speech at the United Nations, the text reads: ""Hiram of Lubrijón [unclear] [translated into English] The Revolutionary Government is very aware of the desperate efforts that is [unclear] the efforts that reflect in the last days [lined out] the open [lined out] activity that the imperialism has been realizing during the last weeks in order to promote at all cost [unclear] revolutionaries, terrorism acts, murder attempts and all type of fights that have a tendency to interfere with the revolutionary process [unclear]. [Next all lined out] The Ministry of the Arm Forces communicates the following: In the day of yesterday [unclear] communicates the headquarters of [unclear] Militia of the West.""In March of 1960, a French freighter unloading munitions from Belgium exploded in Havana taking 75 lives and injuring 200, some of whom subsequently died. The U.S. denied Cuba's accusation of sabotage but admitted that it had sought to prevent the shipment. And so it went, reaching a high point in April of the following year in the infamous CIA-organized invasion of Cuba at the Bay of Pigs. Over 100 exiles died in the attack. Close to 1,200 others were taken prisoner by the Cubans. It was later revealed that four American pilots flying for the CIA had lost their lives as well. The Bay of Pigs assault had relied heavily on the Cuban people rising up to join the invaders, but this was not to be the case. As it was, the leadership and ranks of the exile forces were riddled with former supporters and henchmen of Fulgencio Battista, the dictator overthrown by Castro, and would not have been welcomed back by the Cuban people under any circumstances.Despite the fact that the Kennedy administration was acutely embarrassed by the unmitigated defeat—indeed, because of it—a campaign of smaller-scale attacks upon Cuba was initiated almost immediately, under the rubric of Operation Mongoose. Throughout the 1960's, the Caribbean island was subjected to countless sea and air commando raids by exiles, at times accompanied by their CIA supervisors, inflicting damage upon oil refineries, chemical plants and railroad bridges, cane fields, sugar mills and sugar warehouses, infiltrating spies, saboteurs, and assassins, anything to damage the Cuban economy, promote disaffection, or make the revolution look bad. Taking the lives of Cuban militia members and others in the process, pirate attacks on Cuban fishing boats and merchant ships, bombardments of Soviet vessels docked in Cuba, an assault upon a Soviet army camp with 12 Russian soldiers reported wounded, a hotel and a theater shelled from offshore because Russians and East Europeans were supposed to be present there. These actions were not always carried out on the order of the CIA or with its foreknowledge, but the Agency could hardly plead ""rogue elephant."" It had created Operating Mongoose headquarters in Miami. Only folding crease, faint scattered foxing, and minor edge-wear. Near-fine condition.

Housed in custom half morocco clamshell box. $8800.First edition, fourth printing, of Lee’s cherished masterpiece—“the Huckleberry Finn of the 20th century”—warmly inscribed by the author in the year of publication, signing as Nelle Harper Lee, a form of her signature she used only for close friends and family: “To Marion —— —— with my best wishes, Nelle Harper Lee, September 12, 1960.”Lee's indelible depiction of life in a small Alabama town during the Jim Crow era immediately became a bestseller, quickly established itself on required reading lists in classrooms across the country, and was honored with the 1961 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. It was ""the Huckleberry Finn of the 20th century,"" declared biographer Charles Shields: ""It holds up an ideal of tolerance and compassion that was laudable and very teachable."" Novelist Scott Turow reflected on the book's significance after Lee's death in 2016: ""To Kill a Mockingbird is one of those works of popular literature that was like a divining rod pointing to then-subterranean forces of change… It is also a beautiful book, with a charming voice, perfect characterization and a knowledge that permeates every syllable… Ms. Lee remains an enigmatic figure, but her one real novel will be an intimate part of our lives for a long, long time to come"" (New York Times). Truman Capote refutes statements published in an article in “McCall’s” about Marlene Dietrich’s presence at rehearsals of his and Harold Arlen’s 1954 musical, “House of Flowers.”

Costa Brava, Spain, June 8, 1960. 7" x 10". "Autograph Letter Signed “Truman Capote,” 1p, 7” x 10”. Costa Brava, Spain, June 8, 1960. To Mr. Martinson. On his personal “Truman Capote” stationery. Four file holes in upper blank margin. Fine condition. In full, “As regards your letter of May 19th – I have not read the article in ‘McCall’s’; but I can most definitely say not only was Miss Dietrich an invited visitor to the ‘House of Flowers’ rehearsals, but a very welcome and helpful one; and, far from causing any dissension among the company, she was very much liked by everyone, at least to my knowledge. Her presence was muchly appreciated.”The article to which Capote refers, “The Dietrich Legend” by Bill Davidson, appeared in the March 1960 issue of “McCall’s” magazine. In the letter here offered, Capote refutes Davidson’s statements concerning “House of Flowers” which ran for 165 performances on Broadway, December 30, 1954 to May 21, 1955. Capote wrote the book, Harold Arlen wrote the music, and both collaborated on the lyrics. Stars included Pearl Bailey, Alvin Ailey, Juanita Hall, Geoffrey Holder, and Diahann Carroll in her Broadway debut.Steven Bach wrote in “Marlene Dietrich: Life and Legend” (New York: William Morrow 7 Co., 1992) that Dietrich “served as den mother and charlady for the cast of [Harold] Arlen and Truman Capote’s musical ‘House of Flowers’ when it was in trouble out of town, advising Pearl Bailey on stage jewelry (big rhinestones, not small diamonds)…”"
