        The Naked Lunch

Paris: The Olympia Press,, 1959. Octavo. Original wrappers printed in green and black. With the dust jacket. A superb copy, only very lightly rubbed at the extremities. First edition, first impression, second issue with the new Franc price stamped over the original price on the lower wrapper. Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the title page, "For Harold Norse, friend and patron, with best wishes, William Burroughs". With Norse's ownership signature to the front free endpaper. Harold Norse (1916–2009) was a talented poet associated with the Beat movement and one of America's leading gay literary voices, once described by William Carlos Williams as "the best poet of your generation" (Guardian obituary). In 1939 Norse was dating Chester Kallman when the two men met W. H. Auden at a poetry reading. Kallman became the elder poet's lover and Norse worked as his secretary for a short time. This was the beginning of a long career among the brightest writers of the period, with Norse becoming "something of a literary Leonard Zelig, blending in and out of artistic circles" and cultivating friendships with such disparate authors as Dylan Thomas, Tennessee Williams, William Carlos Williams, James Baldwin, and Charles Bukowski. In 1960, frustrated by the New York literary scene, Norse moved to Europe and lived for a time in the Beat Hotel with Burroughs and Ginsberg (whom he had befriended in New York during the 1940s), and collaborated with Brion Gyson on the cut-up technique. In 1972 he moved to San Francisco where he was published by City Lights Books and received modest celebrity that never reached the heights achieved by many of his literary compatriots. "Although Norse received support and acclaim from writers including Anaïs Nin, Burroughs and Bukowski, his work did not bring him the financial rewards or literary acclaim that he craved. Norse described himself as a 'lone-wolf' and he refused to join the pack, at some cost. In many ways he was more 'Beat' than the Beats: Jewish, illegitimate, homosexual, Norse was an outsider who quietly produced some startling and technically accomplished verse from the fringes of the US literary scene" (Guardian obituary). A superb association copy.

Autograph letter card signed and autogr. poem signed.

      N. p., 23. X. 1959. - Oblong 8vo. 2 pp. Poem: Small 4to. 1 p. 11 lines. To Viveka Heyman, in German: "A few days ago Prof. Valentin called me requesting information, and in the course of the conversation I learned that you had published a review of 'Flucht und Verwechslung' in the June/July issue. I had not received that issue. It was sent to me since, and I was blessed with the great happiness of finding myself so deeply, so uncommonly understood. Dear Viveka Heymann, where on earth may one feel safe and at home but there where two humans encounter each other at the utmost peak of experience [.]". - The 11-line pencilled poem, dedicated to Heyman, is taken "from the cycle, 'Still Death Does Celebrate Life'": as Nelly Sachs has noted in ballpoint at the upper edge, it was "written at the moment of greatest despair in Beckomberga Hospital".

        Goldfinger. (a James Bond novel)

London: Jonathan Cape. 1959., 1959. First Impression, First Issue, Second State., INSCRIBED ASSOCIATION COPY. Publisher's black cloth-effect paper over boards with gilt stamped 'skull'. Pictorial dustwrapper by Richard Chopping. A lightly used copy with one short tear at joint, jacket is near fine and shows extremely well. With presentation inscription to flyleaf; To / Gomer / For one of those / aeroplane trips! / With affection / from / Ian. (underline). Housed in a collector's box. This copy given to Fleming's employer who gave him the means to write. James Gomer Berry, 1st Viscount Kemsley, self-made newspaper baron and owner of the Sunday Times amongst others, first encountered Fleming (appropriately) over a game of cards before the war and was attracted to the young Fleming's confidence. Fleming, as seen by Henry Hopkinson who was also present at the meeting, was "a little too big for his boots but also full of brilliant comment" (Lycett). After the war, Kemsley was quick to take Fleming under his wing by offering him a job as foreign manager of Kemsley Newspapers, with the absurdly high salary of £4500 a year (plus expenses and guaranteed two months off, which fleming spent writing his novels). Throughout their working relationship, Kemsley regarded Fleming as a favoured son. Although by no means a senior figure in the Kemsley organisation, Fleming was the only person in the building who would call Lord and Lady Kemsley by their first names, and frequently saw them socially. It was often to Fleming that Kemsley would turn to for fundamental advice, and Fleming was always able to persuade Kemsley to go along with his ever more audacious schemes. In reality it was a mutually beneficial relationship: Fleming soon brought the ailing Sunday Times glamour, social cachet and credibility, and in return was given the means and opportunity to pursue his lifestyle with little inconvenience, ultimately leading to the creation of James Bond. Gilbert A7a (1.2). See also Appendix A, pages 634-5.

        Song of Peace

New York: Roving Eye Press,, 1959. Based on poems by Paul Eluard, Nicolas Guillen, Horace, M. Lukenin, Gabriela Mistral, Vitêzlav Nezval, Tu Fu. Single quire of small folio leaves, bound in original linen cloth over boards, printed paper with blockprint illustrations laid down to sides. Original blockprints by Anton Refregier on 9 full page plates and a number of vignette doves. Covers somewhat stained, with the paper sides a little soiled and creased, internally clean. A very good copy. First edition, first impression. From a limited edition of 1000 copies, this one signed by the author and the illustrator, and additionally inscribed by Lowenfels, "For Sol Mandelblatt, these anecdotes of the service, Walter Lowenfels, Mays Landing [Lowenfel's sometime New Jersey home] 1962" This inscription by one of America's most ardent peace activists (himself a card carrying Communist) is certainly ironic, but not ignorantly so; Lowenfels and Mandelblatt were both soldiers who had turned into poets and peace activists through their experience of battle - Lowenfels in the First World War, Mandelblatt in the Second (he was, indeed, awarded the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service while fighting to defend Spain against Hitler and Mussolini as a volunteer in the Lincoln Battalion). A certain community of hard experience gives this inscription and this copy a little more weight and substance, no doubt, than many similar productions of the early 60s.
