London: Rupert Hart-Davis, 1958. On the Track of Unknown Animals by Bernard Heuvelmans Translated from the original French by Richard Garnett Illustrated by Monique Watteau Introduction by Gerald Durrell Rare advance reading copy of the first English language edition of the foundational text of cryptozoology London: Rupert Hart-Davis, 1958. 542 pp. Plain wraps with paper label pasted on front wrap announcing "Probable publication date November 1958 / Probable price 35/-". Advance reading copy of the first English-language edition. Vertical crease to front wrap, else Near Fine. New York: Farrar, Straus and Cudahy, 1958. First edition of Malamud's first collection of short stories, which went on to win the National Book Award. Octavo, original cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For Marshall and Min Everything good- Bernie." Near fine in a near fine price-clipped dust jacket. Jacket design by Milton Glaser. Housed in a custom clamshell box. The Magic Barrel, has been recognized as a classic from the time it was published in 1959. The stories are set in New York and in Italy (where Malamud's alter ego, the struggling New York Jewish Painter Arthur Fidelman, roams amid the ruins of old Europe in search of his artistic patrimony); they tell of egg candlers and shoemakers, matchmakers, and rabbis, in a voice that blends vigorous urban realism, Yiddish idiom, and a dash of artistic magic. "In the short story, Malamud achieved an almost psalmlike compression. He has been called the Jewish Hawthorne, but he might just as well be thought a Jewish Chopin, a prose composer of preludes and noctures" (Mark Shechner, Partisan Review). Merton, Thomas
Farrar, Strauss and Cudahy, New York, 1958. First edition of this work which stands alongside The Seven Storey Mountain as one of Merton's most popular works. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Thomas Merton on the title page. Fine in near fine dust jacket. Jacket, typography and binding by Enrico Arno. Thoughtful and eloquent, as timely (or timeless) now as when it was originally published in 1956, Thoughts in Solitude addresses the pleasure of a solitary life, as well as the necessity for quiet reflection in an age when so little is private. Thomas Merton writes: "When society is made up of men who know no interior solitude it can no longer be held together by love: and consequently it is held together by a violent and abusive authority. But when men are violently deprived of the solitude and freedom which are their due, the society in which they live becomes putrid, it festers with servility, resentment and hate." John Terry
New York: 1958. Sculptured Anthropoid Ape Heads Found in or Near the Valley of the John Day River, A Tributary of the Columbia River, Oregon by James Terry First edition of a rare anthropological book suggesting the existence of apelike creatures in the Pacific Northwest New York: James Terry, 1891. 16, [20] pp. Original stapled wraps. First edition. A Good+ copy with edge-chipped and slightly soiled green outer wraps with a few small ink blots, colored pencil underline to author's name on front wrap, foxing and creasing to prelims, corners worn. Rare in the trade, apparently with no copies sold at auction since 1937. The author's only book, a self-published examination of artifacts found in Oregon that the author believed either suggested the presence of apes in the area or a distant memory of apes in Asia that persisted throughout population of North America by Native Americans. A noteworthy collector and dealer of antiquities, Terry was associated with The American Museum of Natural History in New York City during his research for this book. Upon publication this book attracted little attention. That changed in 1935 when Frederick Skiff mentioned it in Adventures in Americana. It would be cited by John Green and a number of other cryptozoologists in the late 20th century as part of a subfield of research into the cryptid the Sasquatch, as noted by Sprague, "Carved Stone Heads of the Columbia River" in Halpin & Ames Manlike Monsters on Trial pp. 230-233. Terry's papers are held in the Frick Collection for the History of Collecting in America. [Attributes: First Edition]

Philadelphia: J.P. Lippincott Company, 1958. Hard Cover. 1st Edition. Good / Dust Jacket Included. Illustrated with black and white photographs by Beaton. First edition, first printing. Inscribed by Beaton on the front free endpaper: "Best wishes / Cecil Beaton [scroll] / ". Publisher's yellow cloth, lettered in black; in the original pictorial dust jacket, lettered in black. Book very good or better, with some toning to the spine and board edges, bright and clean interior; unclipped dust jacket, with some wear and chipping to the extremities, toning to the spine, loss to the spine tail and bottom edge of the front panel, otherwise bright panels. Overall, a presentable copy, inscribed by Beaton. Cecil Beaton's New York is a collection of British photographer and designer Cecil Beaton's impressions of New York City. In his preface, Beaton cautions that this text is "more incomplete than any other book on New York" and contains "nothing of history, economics, politics or religion." Rather, Cecil Beaton's New York presents Beaton's visual interpretations of the city by interweaving his striking photographs with a narrative description of the artist's inspirations. Overall, Cecil Beaton's New York provides a unique look at both New York City's urban landscape and Beaton's creative process. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; In Dust Jacket]

Shaffer, Peter
Hamish Hamilton, London, 1958. First edition of Shaffer's classic work. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by the author on the front free endpaper, "Sir Peter Shaffer." Near fine in a near fine dust jacket with light rubbing. Jacket photograph by Angus McBean. A very nice example. It follows a few days in the lives of the Harringtons, who are at war. While the husband and wife fight each other, the son and daughter are on the same path. Then, when a music teacher comes in, things begin to change, until other things start to threaten the peace. The play premièred at the Comedy Theatre in London's West End in February 1959, and opened at the Music Box Theatre on Broadway on December 2, 1959 and closed October 1, 1960 after 337 performances. The young Juliet Mills, a teenager at the time, played the role of Pamela Harrington, and was nominated for a Tony Award for her performance. It was made into the 1962 film directed by Daniel Mann and produced by Frederick Brisson starring Rosalind Russell, Jack Hawkins, Richard Beymer, Maximilian Schell, and Annette Gorman.
