Antonioni, Michelangelo (director); Jeanne Moreau, Marcello Mastroianni (starring)
Italy: Nepi Film, 1960. Vintage borderless photograph from the set of the 1961 film. A candid aerial photograph of Mastroianni, Moreau, and two other cast members conversing around a table. With a stamp for Telecine and a few annotations on the verso. The second film in the trilogy that begins with "L'Avventura" (1960) and ends with "L'Eclisse" (1962). Shot on location in Milan.Probably no one has ever said it better than Bosley Crowther, who reviewed the film for the New York Times in 1961: "Too sensitive and subtle for apt description are [Antonioni's] pictorial fashionings of a social atmosphere, a rarefied intellectual climate, a psychologically stultifying milieu-and his haunting evocations within them of individual symbolisms and displays of mental and emotional aberrations. Even boredom is made interesting. There is, for instance, a sequence in which a sudden downpour turns a listless garden party into a riot of foolish revelry, exposing the lack of stimulation before nature takes a flagellating hand. Or there's a shot of the crumpled wife leaning against a glass wall looking out into the rain that tells in a flash of all her ennui, desolation and despair." 9.5 x 7.5 inches. Near Fine. In a custom museum-quality frame, archivally mounted, with UV glass.Criterion Collection 678. Eureka Masters of Cinema 61.

GORDON COOPER JR.
1960. Typed Document Signed, "NASA PROJECT MERCURY WORKING PAPER NO. 164 / PROJECT MERCURY / BIOSCIENCE DATA PLAN," December 1, 1960, inscribed "My personal copy / Gordon Cooper." 7 leaves + covers, 8 x 10 1/2 in. Three-hole punched on left side; some toning; very good. Medical researchers wanted to gather "aeromedical" data and test effects on the Project Mercury astronaut's body of "significant and unusual stresses of manned capsule flight." The stresses they were looking into included weightlessness, acceleration tolerance, radiation, noise vibration, thermal stresses, and hypobaric and environmental control system effects. At the time, some scientists believed that weightlessness could lead to circulatory failure, disorientation, gastrointestinal and urinary disturbances, and lack of muscular coordination. The key conclusion of Project Mercury's biomedical program was that human beings could function in the space environment for incrementally increasing flight durations of more than one day. Historical BackgroundProject Mercury (1958-1963) was America's first human spaceflight program. Initially begun by the U.S. Air Force, the program transferred to the newly created civilian National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), in 1958. After twenty unmanned flights, Project Mercury culminated with six successful manned flights between 1961 and 1963.Millions of people around the world followed the Mercury missions on radio and television. Its success paved the way for Project Gemini (1961-1966) and the Apollo program (1961-1972).Leroy Gordon Cooper Jr. (1927-2004) was … [Click Below for Full Description]

There is some wear to the extremities, a few scattered creases, and a bit of rubbing, but overall near fine with surprisingly bright colors. Each card has been screenprinted on the verso of a movie poster that was trimmed to match the dimensions of a typical lobby card. Movie theaters would occasionally commission local sign makers to produce lobby cards for display. The production symbols on many of the cards indicate they were created in the same years as the films they represent. Karl Fred Dahmen
[Click Below for Full Description]

Massachusetts, Florida, Hawaii, 1960. Unbound. Near Fine. An archive of 39 color photographs following a group of friends from Massachusetts on surfing trips in the late 1960s compiled by a female member of the group. There are only a few captions but numerous photos have Kodak stamps on the verso with the year. Roughly half of the images show action shots of people surfing while the rest show the group relaxing on beaches, sunbathing, boating, and having parties. Another key feature of the archive are photographs of their Chevy station wagon which appears to be an early 1950s model strapped with surf boards and parked on various beaches. A few of the members of the party have neck braces on probably caused by surfing accidents which doesn't seem to have stopped them from spending time on the beach with their friends. One of the only captioned photos shows the compiler lounging on a beach with girlfriends in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. A nice collection of late 1960s surfing photos.

3 books, condition varies, see below. Published by Alfred A. Knopf (New York 1960). First edition stated, first printing, Three copies, hardcover, each bound in gray-blue paper-covered sides with cloth backstrip, but (as shown in first scan) each backstrip a different shade of green, each in dust jacket and a protective Mylar wrapper. Copies ## 1 and 2 are Like New, copy #3 better than Very Good; each jacket is between Very Good and Like New. It is nearly always true that all copies of a given printing look pretty much identical, but not here. As the spines scan shows, copies of the first printing of Rabbit, Run were bound with three distinctly different shades of green cloth on the backstrip. Updike's bibliographers speculate that the binder, facing shortages of cloth and time, had to make do with what was on hand. It is commonly reported that there were 10,000 copies in the first printing, but the order in which the cloth supplies were used and the portion of the printing in each binding are unknown. The three issues may have been released without priority. All three copies offered here are in the first issue dust jacket with the 16-line front flap text written (without attribution) by Updike. De Bellis & Broomfield A4a. Copy #1: Signed by Updike on a label pasted on the half-title page. The backstrip is the darkest green. The book is bumped at the top and bottom of the spine and has been read, but it is clean, tight, and unmarked and the green topstain is dark and fresh. The jacket is not price-clipped and has the original $4.00 price. However, the stripes on the jacket … [Click Below for Full Description]

Huston, John (director); Alan Le May (novel); Ben Maddow
Beverly Hills, CA: United Artists, 1960. Original conceptual artwork the 1960 film. Featuring a drawing of Burt Lancaster with Audrey Hepburn clasped against him. Based on the 1957 novel by Alan Le May.In many ways a reflection on John Ford's 1956 film "The Searchers," which was also based on an Alan Le May novel, "The Unforgiven" tells the story of a woman taken from her Native American tribe and raised by a white family. She struggles with her allegiance towards her adoptive family and her feelings towards another white man, and a bloody battle ensues between the two communities. An uncommon film for its time, it highlights the racism Native Americans had to endure from settlers of the Old West.A difficult shoot, which included a severe back injury sustained by Audrey Hepburn when she fell off a horse, director John Huston was unhappy with his producer's insistence on releasing a more commercially friendly film. While Hepburn and Huston would both eventually distance themselves from the film, "The Unforgiven" remains a bold, powerfully raw take on the Western with arguably some of the best performances of many of the actors involved.20 x 25.5 inches. Graphite and charcoal on illustration board. Very Good, with some tape at the top and bottom edges, the bottom two corners bumped, and light toning to the extremities.Hardy, The Western, p. 277. Hitt, p. 329. Pitts 4662.

Publisher's black cloth-effect paper over boards with eye motif stamped in white to the upper cover, titled in gilt to the spine, in pictorial dust-wrapper illustrated by Richard Chopping. This is a presentation copy from Ian Fleming's literary agent Peter Janson-Smith (1922-2016) on behalf of the author, as stated on a specially printed certificate affixed to the flyleaf, completed in the hand of Janson-Smith prior to publication and subsequently signed by him in my presence (in 2008). He explained that these special copies were destined for Cape's Colonial offices in recognition of their overseas sales efforts. TEREBA, Stanislav and Alexander Tóth, photographers
eskoslovenský svaz t lesné výchovy a sportu, Prague, 1960. Oblong folio measuring 17" x 12". Screw-bound tan leather over stiff paper boards with gilt titled. Contains 110 black and white or color silver gelatin photographs measuring between 3.5" x 9" and 8" x 10". Slightly bowed boards thus near fine with fine photographs. Deluxe, large-format photograph album produced by the Czechoslovak Union of Physical Education as an homage to the massive Sokol coordinated gymnastics meeting held in Prague in 1960. The Sokol movement, founded in the 1860s by Miroslav Tyr? and Jind ich Fügner, became an important force for cultural unity during the Czech national revival of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, and upon the founding of Czechoslovakia, the organization played a central role in the cultural life of the new nation. Quickly co-opted and re-formed as a mass propaganda tool by the communists following the coup of 1948, the now state-directed Sokol organization staged a series of so-called "Spartakiads" every five years from 1955, designed, in theory, to celebrate the Red Army's liberation of Czechoslovakia in 1945, though the 1970 event would be canceled in the aftermath of the Prague Spring. The 1960 event, depicted here, proved to be the largest-ever of its kind, gathering more than 700,000 gymnasts and nearly 2 million spectators. All of the color photographs in this album and the majority of the black-and-white images are the work of the important Czech photojournalist Stanislav Tereba, who had risen to international fame in 1958 when one of his sports-related photogra … [Click Below for Full Description]
