Townes coined the word 'maser' for this device, an acronym for microwave amplification by stimulated emission of radiation. The device they built "used stimulated emission in a stream of energized ammonia molecules to produce amplification of microwaves at a frequency of about 24.0 gighertz" (Wikipedia). "Einstein suggested 'that under the proper circumstances, atoms could release excess energy as light -- either spontaneously or when stimulated by light. In 1951, Charles H. Townes, then at Columbia University in New York City, thought of a way to generate stimulated emission at microwave frequencies. "In the 1930s scientists could have built a laser. They had the optical techniques and theoretical knowledge -- but nothing pushed these together. Charles Townes od Columbia University had studies molecules as a physicist in the 1930s, and during the war he had worked on radar as an electronics engineer. The Office of Naval Research pressed him and other physicists to put their heads together and invent a way to make powerful beams of radiation at ever shorter wavelengths. In 1951 he found a solution. Under the right conditions -- say, inside a resonating cavity like the ones used to generate radar waves --- the right kind of collection of molecules might generate radiation all on its own. He was applying an engineer's insights to a physicists's atomic systems. Townes gave the problem to Herbert Zeiger, a postdoctoral student, and James P. Gordon, a graduate student. By 1954 they had the device working [this paper being the detailed description of what they built]. Townes called it a MASER, for "Microwave Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation" (AIP, Laserfest). Townes was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for this work in 1964. ALSO INCLUDED is Van Hove's paper presenting a central quantity in the study of fluctuations, the density-density spacetime correlation that has come to be known as the Van Hove function. John Steinbeck's Original Pedigree of His Beloved Dog Charley [Author of: Travels with Charley, The Grapes of Wrath, Of Mice and Men, In Dubious Battle, East of Eden, Tortilla Flat, and others] WAS $6,750

Bercy [Paris]: [No Publisher Stated], 1951. First edition. PRESENTLY DISCOUNTED. WAS $6,750. The Original Document of Pedigree for John Steinbeck's beloved Poodle, Charley (whose full name, as given by John Steinbeck, was "Charles le Chien"). The Document, duly executed in France and sent from the Breeder to John Steinbeck, came from John Steinbeck's Manhattan apartment and was obtained at the 2010 Bloomsbury Auction of John Steinbeck's personal property. The document is contained on a single sheet of paper measuring approximately 12 1/4 inches X 18 1/2 inches folded in the middle to produce a 4-page document measuring 12 1/4 inches X 9 1/4 inches. The Pedigree is in Fine condition with a bit of toning and a small stray mark to the front page, and has been folded twice horizontally, presumably for mailing to John Steinbeck. As Charley was dearly beloved to John Steinbeck and Steinbeck's lone constant companion on his trip around the United States not long before his (Steinbeck's) death, and as he is, with Steinbeck, the central figure in Steinbeck's book "Travels with Charley", this document connects one to one of the most important "people" in John Steinbeck's life: His famous Poodle, Charley. Shortly after completing his last novel, "The Winter of Our Discontent", Steinbeck found himself disenchanted with the state of his Country and its rampant consumerism and selfishness. Feeling that he had lost touch with America and Americans, Steinbeck wrote to his close friend Frank Loesser stating, in part: "In the fall - right after Labor Day - I'm going to learn about my own country. I've lost the flavor and taste and sound of it....I'm buying a pick-up truck ...I'm going alone...zigzagging...I'll avoid cities, hit small towns and farms and ranches. I'll sit in bars and hamburger stands and on Sunday go to Church....always zigzagging. Elaine will join me occasionally but mostly I have to go alone. What I'll get I need badly - a re-knowledge of my own country...." He set off from Sag Harbor on September 23, 1960 with only Charley as his companion. His wife, Elaine, later said: "I remember when he asked to take Charley Dog. He said rather meekly 'This is a big favor I'm going to ask, Elaine. Can I take Charley?'" Early in the book, Steinbeck stated: "It is some years since I have been alone, nameless, friendless, without any of the safety one gets from family, friends, and accomplices...It's just a very lonely, helpless feeling at first - a kind of desolate feeling. For this reason I took one companion on my journey - an old French gentleman poodle known as Charley. Actually his name is Charles le Chien. He was born in Bercy on the outskirts of Paris and trained in France, and while he knows a little poodle-English, he responds quickly only to commands in French." A great rarity, the Original Pedigree for Charley, provides a true connection with John Steinbeck, a dog he treasured, and his travels around his own country made so that he could get to know it anew. RARE INDEED.

The Enchafèd Flood: Or, the Romantic Iconography of the Sea

London: Faber and Faber, 1951 First UK edition. Signed by the author in blue ink on the title page. Publisher's blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt; in the original pictorial dust jacket, front panel lettered in blue with red marine decorations over a green striped background. Very good, with some light wear to the extremities, former owner's signature to the front free endpaper, otherwise bright and clean pages; unclipped dust jacket, with some wear and small nicks to the extremities, some toning to the spine, some light stains and soiling to panels. Bloomfield A28. The Enchafèd Flood contains Auden's three Page-Barbour Lectures given at the University of Virginia in 1949: "The Sea and the Desert," "The Stone and the Shell," "Ishmael-Don Quixote." The Page-Barbour Lectures is an endowed annual series of orations on a topic of the speaker's choosing. The lectures are subsequently published in book format. For his lectures, Auden chose 19th century Romantic oceanic imagery as his subject, specifically the symbolism of the solitary voyager figure. Naturally, Moby Dick was a central part of these discussions. While these speeches were specifically crafted for the Page-Barbour Lectures, Auden discussed similar themes relating to sea imagery in his previously published essays. Auden chose the title The Enchafèd Flood from a line in Shakespeare's Othello: "I never did like molestation view/ On the enchafèd flood.". Signed by Author. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.
