Peake first met Lawrence Olivier in Germany in 1945 and would use this friendly meeting as an introduction in 1950 when he attempted to persuade Olivier and his wife Vivien Leigh to produce and act in his play The Wit to Woo. According to Olivier, Leigh liked the play but his approches came to nothing and they eventually gave upon it in 1952. During this period Vivien Leigh starred in Elia Kazan's film of Tennessee William's A Streetcar Named Desire. This haunting portrayal won Leigh an Oscar for the role. Portraits by Peake of well-known people rarely appear on the market.

SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Henry Miller on the front free endpaper: "To Mrs. Edna Liebmann/who, I hope, will/spread the good/news./Henry Miller/8/10/52." Laid in are two AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIGNED (ALSs) by Miller to Liebmann with the original mailing envelopes addressed in Miller's hand from 1957 and 1958. Dustwrapper art by Alvin Lustig. One of this Nobel Prize winner's two famous and important novels, the other being of course STEPPENWOLF. Hesse based this book on the early life of Gautama Buddha. The story of a son rebelling against his father's teaching and traditions and eventually finding true enlightenment resonated with those maturing in the 1960s and 1970s making this title something of a cult classic. It was made into a beautiful film in 1972 by Conrad Rooks.

L'Age Du Cinéma insert present in No. 4. A very nice set. First editions. THE FIRST FIVE ISSUES OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL CINEMA MAGAZINE EVER PUBLISHED. Since its inception more than sixty years ago, Cahiers Du Cinéma has been responsible for fundamental change in both the practice and the perception of cinema. Founded by film theorist and critic André Bazin in 1951, the magazine proudly laid out its manifesto from the outset, hailing cinema as an art form every bit as important as literature, music or painting, and according its practitioners the title of artist, not artiste. For sixty years it has championed the serious over the merely entertaining, the heroic failure over the safe success and, most importantly, a distinctive European voice over transatlantic homogeneity. The magazine's flavour is captured by its list of the 100 best films of all time, published in 2008. Citizen Kane and Night of the Hunter top a roll call otherwise dominated by European and World cinema, with an occasional nod to the likes of Howard Hawks and John Ford. It's quirkiness is characteristic of the magazine: there are the names you would expect to find (Bergman, Fellini, Dreyer) but the chosen films are surprising (Fanny and Alexander, Amarcord, and Gertrud are their respective entries). Cahiers Du Cinema was at its most influential in the late 1950s, when the magazine became the official headquarters of the young directors of the French New Wave: Truffaut, Chabrol, Godard, Rohmer and Rivette. Socially, politically and intellectually engaged, these directors were the engine room of La Nouvelle Vague , a movement which set the future course not just of European cinema, but also that of the American indie movement of the 1970s, whose leading lights were weaned on the films promoted and popularised by Cahiers. Political infighting led to dark days for the magazine in the early 1970s -- movies and Maoism don't mix -- and the magazine has always had a tendency to disappear up its own cul from time to time. But its faults notwithstanding, Cahiers remains the most influential and respected film magazine ever published. A telegram addressed to General Douglas MacArthur at his residence in the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York from ?Chi Chung Chun, Speaker for the Democratic Nationalist Party of the Republic of Korea?. At the close of MacArthur?s involvement in the Korean War, Chi Chung Chun thanked MacArthur for his vast efforts in support of Korean freedom: ?The Democratic Nationalist Party of the Republic of Korea expresses its deepest gratitude for your immortal contribution to the freedom of Korea and to the cause of democracy believing that your championship in the fight for freedom will be engraved forever in the history of Korea and of free nations.? On April 11th, 1951, President Truman had relieved MacArthur of his command of the United States Army due to MacArthur?s supposed insubordination and disregard of Truman?s orders when speaking to the press. Five days prior to the telegram, on April 19, 1951, MacArthur gave his famous and much lauded ?old soldiers never die, they just fade away? speech to Congress upon his official departure from the United States Army. Korea?s Democratic Nationalist Party was a conservative party that reorganized into the Democratic Party in 1955. The telegram is printed on paper with red borders bearing the RCA Communications name and logo, as well as the RCA watermark. It is in fine condition with a few small marks. A terrific MacArthur and Korean War relic.

Men At Arms is inscribed by the Waugh to fellow author, J.F. Powers, "For Jim Powers with admiration from Evelyn Waugh I bet you $1 you can't finish it". Officers and Gentlemen and Unconditional Surrender are both signed by Waugh. Each are near fine in very good to fine dust jackets. The Sword of Honour trilogy of novels about World War II, is largely based on the author's own experiences as an army officer and some critics ague the crowning achievement Waugh's career. Its central character is Guy Crouchback, head of an ancient but decayed Catholic family, who at first discovers new purpose in the challenge to defend Christian values against Nazi barbarism, but then gradually finds the complexities and cruelties of war too much for him. "Sword of Honour was the climax of [Waugh's] career as a novelist . . . Here in his final work there run together the two styles, of mischief and gravity, that can be noted in his writing from the beginning . . . He may justifiably have thought of it as crowning his work" (Frank Kermode).

With transparent vellum guard, printed with the following description: "Hand-pulled dust grained gravure made from an original print, in an edition of one thousand, plus one hundred artist's proofs. The plate was made by Jon Goodman. The edition was printed at Atelier de Taille Douce, Saint Prex, Switzerland. The mold- made cotton rag paper was produced especially for this edition by Georges Duchene at Moulin de Larroque, Lalinde, France. Each gravure has been approved by john G. Morris, agent for the heirs of W. Eugene Smith, and has been engraved with an authorized stamp." With said stamp, a blind embossed title, at the lower right of the sheet. In near fine condition with faint 2 inch crease to the lower left side, present on the covers, and less noticeably on the print. William Eugene Smith (December 30, 1918, Wichita, Kansas - October 15, 1978, Tucson, Arizona) was an American photojournalist known for his refusal to compromise professional standards and his brutally vivid World War II photographs.

D/w seems too large for book, and is a little baggy. Spotting to prelims to about p.7 and to extrems from about p.192. Spotting to top and fore-edges. O/w contents clean and bright. Binding firm and square. No inscriptions. A Very Good copy in a like d/w with all the points present for a first edition, first printing: the publisher's imprint information on the colophon (to the rear of the book) states 'First published 1951', the colour frontispiece depicts the dance scene in chapter 11, and there is the map of Narnia on the front endpapers. The points that indicate the first state of the d/w are publisher's 'blurb' and price '10s. 6d. (line break) net' on the front turn-in, with reviews of The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe to the rear panel, and 'APTV/10' printed to the rear turn-in. First edition. First printing.

Son travail de graveur semble peu connu et peu abondant. Les eaux-fortes jointes, tirées par l'artiste elle-même, et non, comme dans l'ouvrage imprimé, par Roger Lacourière, sont beaucoup plus profondes que dans ce dernier. Quelques traces de rouille laissées par des trombones dans les marges de certaines estampes. Pour le reste, parfait..

Album with approxmately 280 + photographs; mounted with photo-corners only, not glued down; many with identifiers on back, dating the photograph and naming the participants; many photographs of social activities, state and company dinners, tennis matches, other sporting activities where apparently these people went to be entertained in Cairo and Alexandria, Egypt; a mixing of Middle-Eastern and Western-style events, with some military and political leaders socially melding with the engineers and workers on this project; with views of the Egyptian countryside as well as of the plant; (with) a book in Arabic, evidently promoting the new facility, with black and white photographs; also including about 30-40 photographs of family outings, evidently in Europe, Italy and other places where family and friends may have had leave from building the project; various formats, mostly snapshot size, however there are many 3" x 5" and larger, even a couple of 7"x 9" size; all contained in a faux leather album, with a very worn spine and coming disbound; photographs clear, well-taken and very well preserved, recording a little-known aspect of Western business and industrial development in the Middle East, with the participation of wives and families while a project was being completed and during the Nasser revolutionary era; We note that some of the equipment, possibly for power generation, bears the Babcock & Wilcox name, and also equipment from Kohorn, who were textile equipment manufacturers; these names are visible on the apparatus pictured in the accompanying brochure.. Title pages in red and black. A few minor bumps to edges of boards of volume I, some light rubbing at extremities. An excellent set in the lightly rubbed jackets with some fading along the spines and edges. First collected editions, first impression. Although the publication statement in Volume I gives 1951 as the date of issue, all three volumes were published simultaneously in an edition of 4740 sets in September 1952, 500 sets of sheets were exported for the American edition, published 1953. Eade corrected the titles of a number of the speeches and inserts the Secret Session Speeches in the correct chronological order. A lovely set, uncommon in such nice condition.
