Traveller's Prelude; Beyond Euphrates Autobiography 1929-1933; The Coast of Incense Autobiography 1933-1939; Dust in the Lion's Paw Autobiography 1939-1946.

London: 1950–62 - 4 works, octavo. Original green cloth, titles gilt, top edges dyed green. With the dust jackets. Cloth only very slightly rubbed, some spotting to edges and endpapers, a very good set indeed, with the jackets only lightly rubbed at the extremities with the exception of Traveller's Prelude which has a substantial chip from the head of spine panel and a few much smaller chips and closed tears to bottom edge, the white rear panels a little tanned and spotted, the spine panels are a little tanned, and Beyond Euphrates price-clipped with an overprice sticker. Photographic plates and maps throughout, First editions of Stark's autobiographical quartet, the first and third instalments both inscribed by the author on the half title to Lady Jane Oppenheimer, "inscribed for Jittie by Freya Stark, Jan. 1952" and "inscribed for Jittie by Freya Stark, Jan. 1956". The set derives from the family of Lady Jane S. Oppenheimer (née Martin), who had married the diplomat Sir Francis Oppenheimer (1870-1961) in 1931. She had previously been married to Sir Ernest Horlick, and had published, under the name Jittie Horlick, a book entitled Jewels in Brass in 1913. The set includes, laid in, a Greek post card addressed to Lady Oppenheimer from an unidentified individual, dated 1961. The first three works are first impressions, the fourth a second impression in the following year. First editions of Stark's autobiographies, which relate her lifetime's travels in Italy, Mesopotamia, Egypt, the Arabian Gulf, and India, are quite scarce in jacket and rare inscribed.          The complete Chronicles of Narnia series].

London Geoffrey Bles -56 1950 - 7 volumes, first editions, comprising The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, some sunning to cloth, jacket restored at spine and edges, 1950; Prince Caspian, ink names on half-title, some minor spotting, light mottling to lower board, jacket restored at spine and edges, 1951; The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, skilful restoration to spine and extreme edges of jacket, price-clipped, 1952; The Silver Chair, jacket restored at spine, edges and corners, price-clipped, 1953; The Horse and his Boy, light stain to head of first few ff., small ink name to head of front free endpaper, light stain to covers, jacket slightly stained at head of spine with some minor wear to corners, some light marking to lower panel, 1954; The Magician's Nephew, prize plate on front pastedown, jacket with neat restoration to spine and edges, price-clipped, 1955; The Last Battle, jacket spine slightly browned, some rubbing, but overall a very good example, 1956, plates, illustrations and maps by Pauline Baynes, including colour where called for, original cloth/boards, dust-jackets as described. First editions of the complete set of the Chronicles of Narnia, Lewis' masterpiece, born in part from a dream the author had: "At first I had very little idea how the story would go. But then suddenly Aslan came bounding into it. I think I had been having a good many dreams of lions about that time.once he was there, he pulled the whole story together, and soon he pulled the six other Narnian stories in after him (On Stories: And Other Essays on Literature, 1980). "[The Narnia books are] intoxicating to all but the most relentlessly unimaginative of readers, and must be judged the most sustained achievement in fantasy for children by a 20th-century author" (Carpenter & Pritchard, The Oxford Companion to Children's Literature 370). "Lewis was perturbed by the simpering, wishy-washy way goodness was portrayed in most religious teaching, making children inevitably feel that it was much more glamorous to be bad. He agrees with the aesthetic tradition that art should teach by delighting, by making the reader enchanted with an ideal." (Harold Bloom) An attractive, sophisticated set of C.S. Lewis' classic series for children, in part preserved by sympathetic & skilful restoration. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[COLD WAR] Anytown Civil Defence Corps : Help to shield your family : Join now!

London : Floyd Studio, [between 1950 and 1960]. Original hand-stencilled and painted poster design, 750 x 510 mm, signed 'Floyd' at top right, stencilled across bottom margin 'Copyright Floyd Studio London W.9. / CD 24'; unbacked and unmounted; closed tear at top left, and some water staining at left and right edges, top left corner, and lower centre; strengthened verso with strips of tape; nevertheless, a striking, vibrantly coloured poster design which appears not to have been used by the CDC and is therefore a unique image. Established as a civilian volunteer organisation in Great Britain in 1949, the role of the Civil Defence Corps (CDC) was to mobilise and take local control of the affected area in the aftermath of a major national emergency, which was primarily envisaged as being a Cold War nuclear attack. Although it was under the authority of the Home Office, its administration was decentralised and the various branches were largely locally run. The CDC was disbanded in 1968, but for 20 years it was a major organisation which at any one time from the mid 1950s on boasted over 300,000 personnel.

Hand Corrected Manuscript of One Lonely Night

Np. 1950. Setting copy of an important novel, the actual hand corrected typescript, with hundreds of changes, corrections, deletions and additions, signed twice ("Mickey" and "M. S.") and dated "9-27-50" (the book was published in 1951). Complete in 251 pages (rectos only), with 7 pages of preliminaries, and 244 pages of novel numbered 1-3, 5-240, plus 5 inserted pages. Some corrections are in the hand of a proof reader, or type setter, but Spillane's deletions are substantial and his own changes and corrections are considerable (found on nearly every page), and all are in his own handwriting. Usual signs of production rites, but very good. Rare. Prominent in its clique. Full morocco case. itself scarce in a ne dustjacket, as are proofs, but what we're offering is both unique, and geometrically greater, the complete manuscript from which the book was actually typeset and printed, and these days noir manuscripts of such magnitude and vintage, are usually not within my (your) frustrated reach, at any price. Spillane wrote in a distinctively blunt narrative prose, with no attempt to make his reader giggle like an Asian princess. Beginning in 1947 he achieved early and immense popularity, wrote steadily for 25 years, took a 12 year break in 1972, then returned to fame with a new generation in 1984. One Lonely Night is a mystery, written at the summit of his energy and imagination. It features his impudent Mike Hammer (4th book in the Hammer series), in a furious spy thriller with more ins and outs than a ddler's elbow. The plot is charged by a surfeit of violence, love, hate, sex, deceit, sadistic crime, corrupt politics, moral ambiguity, and national peril, following a case that sets Hammer (as the angel of death) against an American cell of Communist agents (anticipating 007 and his license to kill by 3 years) in the earliest days of the cold war, when everyone assumed (based on every precedent) it would heat up lethally at any moment. Very good.

Fifteen Hand-Colored Holiday Cards with Art by Legendary New Yorker Artist Al Frueh

1950. Very Good. Fifteen different hand-colored holiday cards by artist Al Frueh, dates range from 1921 thru 1950, with most from the 1920s and 30s. Various sizes and formats, from small cards to broadsides that have been folded to be mailed. Paper on verso of some are a bit skinned from having been mounted in an album, but all are otherwise very good or better. Several have been mailed, all addressed to the Bode family. Each of the cards appears to be a woodcut print with hand-coloring by Frueh. Subjects range from traditional holiday themes: stockings hung from the mantelpiece, wreaths, angels. etc. to more topical subjects such as a play on the WPA logo ("G&A Frueh: We Do Our Stuff"), Hitler and Mussolini (for 1937; "Heilee, Heilo from Al Hitler and Giuliette Mussolini"), Frueh and his wife are pictured as monkeys picking bugs off of each other (for 1925, the year of the Scopes Monkey Trial), and in 1922 an image of Santa Claus in a Klan outfit from "The Frueh Klux Klan." The Ohio-born Frueh was an artist and caricaturist who was a contributor to the inaugural issue of The New Yorker, and drew the cover for the second issue. He remained on the staff for more than half of a century. His specialty was the Broadway and entertainment scene and he was the direct precursor to caricaturist and Broadway chronicler Al Hirschfeld. A particularly pleasing group of holiday cards by a unique and amusing artist.

Berlin, 1944. S. 411ff. - Mit interessantem Mediziner-Exlbris Dr. George Meyer (1860-1923 Mitbegründer der Deutschen Krebsgesellschaft). - Unbeschnitten. - Etwas berieben, oberes Kapital mit kleiner Fehlstelle.          "Canada" from Harmonies of the Spheres: 10 Nations Rejoice. Autograph musical manuscript full score arrangement for wind band. Signed. 1991

An Egyptian-born American composer, performer, ethnomusicologist, and educator, El-Dabh came to the United States in 1950, becoming a part of the New York music scene that included Cage, Varèse, and Hovhaness. He went on to study composition with Krenek, Copland, Dallapiccola, and others. "El-Dabh's compositional style is influenced by Egyptian folk and traditional music. Frequently monodic, his works feature complex rhythms and much use of percussion.          The Nuremberg Chronicle: A Pictorial World History from the Creation to 1493. A Monograph by Ellen Shaffer with a Leaf from the Pirated Augsburg Latin Edition of 1497

Plantin Press for Dawson's Book Shop, Los Angeles 1950 - Tall quarto. 62pp. One of 300 copies printed by the Plantin Press for Dawson's Book Shop. The leaf is from the portion of the Chronicle on the sixth age of the world. It bears two woodcuts on the recto and six on the verso, each presenting a portrait of a monarch, bishop, or other significant figures to accompany a corresponding biography. The recto has two three-line initials and the verso has seven. The leaf is taken not from the more commonly encountered 1493 Nuremberg edition, but from the "pirated" 1497 Augsburg edition. The volume itself is illustrated with an opening decorative initial and numerous reproductions of the original woodcuts, including the well-known Dance of Death. Ellen Shaffer's extensive essay offers a history of the Nuremberg Chronicle, along with a census of copies in North America of its fifteenth-century editions. Some staining to bottom of leaf with minor wear along fore-edge. Some minor rubbing to extremities and a small tear at top gutter of front paste-down, else a fine copy in blue pictorial cloth boards. Duplicate unsewn gathering of front matter from half-title through acknowledgements laid in. Bookplate. (BCC #20; Chalmers 103, pp. 83-84). [Attributes: Hard Cover]
