        THE EMPERORS [series title]

[ New York] 1950 - Folio. Plate size 45 x 37.5 cm, plus full margins. Series of six original etchings, with aquatint. Some faint smudges to a few margins, otherwise fine. A striking, atmospheric series of etchings depicting six Roman emperors, each being example #4 from an edition of fifty numbered impressions, each captioned, numbered and signed by the artist in the margin. The etchings are also titled in the plate: "Nero The Profligate," "Marcus Aurelius the Philosopher," "Constantine the Christian," "Great Caesar the Conqueror," "Augustus Father of Rome," and "Tiberius render Unto Caesar." Ritter (1906 - 1976) ran the Laurel Gallery in New York from 1947 - 1950, and published the work of a number of artists, including Milton Avery. It is possible that this series appeared at that time.

Across the River and Into the Trees

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons,, 1950. Octavo. Original blue buckram, facsimile signature to front board and titles to spine gilt. Containing several textual errors which were corrected to the first trade edition. Housed in a quarter black morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. A superb copy. first edition, first printing, one of 24 copies specially bound for presentation, printed from the uncorrected sheets. With the author's presentation inscription on the half-title, "To Alfred Rice with all good wishes and affection Ernest Hemingway". Rice was a lawyer based in New York, who specialised in copyright law, and handled all of Hemingway's literary, radio, television and motion picture properties. He began representing Hemingway in 1944, often travelling to Cuba to meet with his client. After the first 24 copies had been run off, a number of errors were caught; these first sheets were not bound for sale but instead bound up in a different cloth to the first edition and given to the author and the publisher for presentation to friends. The bibliographer Grissom records an apocryphal anecdote from David Randall, manager of Scribner's Rare Books Division, who claimed that 25 copies were bound up from the discarded sheets of the entire first edition. Grissom noted that "it would be much more likely that the presentation copies were printed, per usual, as advance copies from the flawed early plates". We have handled a copy in which Scribner's confirmed that the number of copies was in fact 24.

        Group of Five Typescript Poems]

The Author, [Np 1950 - Ten leaves, quarto. Typed on rectos only. Some tanning and modest finger soiling, some old folds from having been mailed, but in good order. An interesting lot of typescripts of early poems by Ginsberg, originally from the papers of his friend and fellow writer, John Clellon Holmes, and likely sent or given to him for his comments. Four of the typescripts are dated in black ink at the conclusion of the poem, ranging 1945-1950. The poems are as follow: a) "An Early Poem Revised," with a previous dedication scratched out in black ink ("for Richard W[illegible]"). 1 page. Dated "1945 - 1950." This is a draft of the poem printed as "An Eastern Ballad" in the CP of 1985, and includes a stanza not present in the galleys of that collected final version. b) "Stanzas Written at Night in Radio City." Two pages, undated. Apart from alteration of one word, this typescript conforms to the text printed in CP 1985, but does not include the two final stanzas (likely a concluding page is missing). c) "The Song of the Shrouded Stranger of the Night." Two different typescripts, on three leaves, one with the title shortened, omitting 'of the Night,' with Ginsberg's typed name at the top, and with one pencil correction. The other typescript is dated in ink, 1949-1950. The text is the rhymed version, and both typescripts present a state of the poem substantially different from that collected as "The Shrouded Stranger" in CP (1985), where it is dated "1949-1951." d) "Ode to the Setting Sun." 2 pages. Dated '1949' in ink at conclusion. Compared to the text included in the CP of 1985, this draft includes a substantially longer explanatory "Note" after the title, and includes several important differences in diction and sentence construction. e) "In Judgement." Two pages, dated in ink at end "1950." This typescript presents a significantly variant form of the poem collected as "In Memoriam" in the CP of 1985. While assuredly apprentice work, and not of the caliber of his poetry of a half-decade later, this is a textually important and interesting lot of typescripts.

        The Cocktail Party. A Comedy.

London: Faber and Faber Ltd, 1950 - Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. Housed in red quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Spine a little cocked, minor fading to cloth along edges of boards, an excellent copy in a very good jacket, tanned to spine panel, lightly nicked at the extremities with a small closed tear at top of front joint and a small chip from the top of front panel just affecting titles. First edition, first impression, a major association copy, presented by Eliot to Ezra Pound, with his affectionate inscription, "Ez from O. Possum, 6.iii.50" to the front free endpaper, dated three days before publication. Eliot of course owed an eternal debt of gratitude to Pound – "il miglior fabbro" – for his editorial shaping of The Waste Land. At the time of this inscription Pound was still being held in St Elizabeth's Hospital, Washington DC, working on the Cantos and his translations of Sophocles. In the judgment of his lover Olga Rudge he still harboured "bats in the belfry". What Pound's sentiments must have been on receipt of this play can only be guessed at, but Rudge, who attended a matinee of The Cocktail Party in London, wrote to Pound urging him to "encourage His friend, the Possum, who does love Him, she feels it.'" In July 1946 Eliot had visited Pound at St Elizabeth's, considering his situation "very grim", and petitioned for him to be moved to better quarters. Subsequently, Eliot sought to help Pound, notably by having Faber & Faber publish the UK edition of the Pisan Cantos in 1949, and also by manoeuvring to have Pound awarded the inaugural Bollingen Prize, outraging the sensitivities of many in Cold War America that an incarcerated fascist sympathiser could be granted thousands of dollars by the Library of Congress. This presentation copy could have been sent to St Elizabeth's either via Rudge or the post. From the provenance of the book, we know that it was passed by Pound (though without inscription) to Eileen Lane Kinney. Kinney was a member of the inner circle of modernist artists and writers based in Paris in the 1920s and 30s. She had been Brancusi's lover before returning to America just as the Second World War loomed. She settled in Washington DC and worked on a number of translations of political studies from French into English. When in 1946 Pound was moved to St Elizabeth's, she spared little time in contacting him and arranging visits. Pound inscribed a copy of his Pisan Cantos to her in 1958, just before his departure for Italy, and we suspect that this remarkable Eliot presentation may also have been given to her at this time.         Canto General.

Mexico: Talleres Graficos de la Nacion, 1950. First edition of the Nobel Prize-winning author's masterpiece. Folio, original cloth, pictorial endpapers designed by Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros. One of five hundred copies printed on malinche paper. Signed by Pablo Neruda, illustrators Diego Rivera and David A. Siqueiros. In very good condition with some rubbing to the spine and some light repair to the crown of the spine. Rare and desirable. "Canto General" ("General Song") consists of 15 sections, 231 poems, and more than 15,000 lines. It is the stunning epic of an entire continent and its people. The Canto speaks of the destiny of Latin American peoples and the life of the poet himself. Without question, this is one of the most important and powerful long poems written in the century. "Neruda was a kind of King Midas. Everything he touched turned to poetry," says Gabriel García Márquez, who also considers the Chilean Nobel laureate "the greatest poet of the twentieth century, in any language."

The American Mind. An interpretation of American thought and character since the 1880s.

New Haven: Yale University Press, 1950 - Octavo. Original beige boards, spine and front cover lettered in blue. With the dust jacket. Light white marking to spine. A very good copy in the chipped dust jacket, lightly creased and toned, spine panel heavily faded, foxed on the interior. First edition, first printing. Inscribed on the front free endpaper by the author: "Mr. Katzenbach with good wishes Henry Steele Commager". Commager (1902–1998) was one of the most prolific American historians of his time, whose works helped define American liberalism. The present work, one of his most famous, argues that the American mind is rational, secular and pragmatic, and consequently those whom he criticises as "irrationalists" — a broad church including Ernest Hemingway and Ezra Pound — are castigated as contrary to the American tradition. Despite this, Commager was a supporter of pluralism and freedom of thought, and he publicly opposed McCarthyism. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]
