Asimov, Isaac
New York: Gnome Press, 1950. First Edition. First Edition. Presumed "Armed Forces" edition, or the publisher's short-lived attempt to produce paperbacks, bound in wrappers identical to the jacket art of the hardcover edition. More scarce than the hardcover, a stopper for Asimov collectors. Asimov's classic work, a collection of short stories that had immediate and lasting impact on both science fiction and popular culture, introducing the author's now legendary "Three Laws of Robotics". Very Good plus in illustrated wrappers. A small chip to the front wrapper, a larger corner chip to the rear wrapper, silverfish damage to some preliminary pages, and light shelfwear and toning overall. [Attributes: First Edition]

FRANKFURTER, Felix.
New York: the Pach Brothers, [c. 1950]. New York: the Pach Brothers,, [c. 1950]. Inscribed by Frankfurter to a pioneering female practitioner of law Monochrome photograph by the Pach Brothers studio, signed in black ink below the image on the white mount, further mounted and framed. Image size: 205 x 177 mm. Frame size: 360 x 270 mm. The image and mount in fine condition. A handsome three-quarter length portrait of Frankfurter, seated in judicial robes, facing left, inscribed by him, "For Enie Nash, with every good wish for her successful practice of the public profession of the law, from her devoted friend, Felix Frankfurter", dated 15 January 1950. Ellen "Enie" Virginia Nash (1910-1995) was a pioneering female practitioner of law in Virginia. She was the niece of Frances Nash Watson, the eminent American concert pianist and wife of General Edwin "Pa" Watson, Roosevelt's military aide and secretary. The Watsons lived in a house called Kenwood, designed by Roosevelt's cousin, the architect William A. Delano; Roosevelt himself had a cottage for his own use nearby. Presumably through Roosevelt, Frankfurter became a close friend of the Watsons. He and Frances maintained a regular and affectionate correspondence, and a photograph of Frankfurter inscribed to Frances was on display at Kenwood alongside others, similarly inscribed (Orr & Jordan-Anders). It was no doubt through his association with the Watsons that Frankfurter befriended their niece, Ellen Nash, who graduated from the University of Virginia as the sole woman of her law class and was one of the first women to prac … [Click Below for Full Description]

Key West, Florida, 1950. A collection of 108 black and white photographs most measuring 3.5" x 4.5" from an American military base during the Korean War. Based on a single caption it would appear that at least some of the photographs were taken at the Naval Air Station in Key West, Florida. The assemblage documents the comings and goings on the naval air base with pilots working on equipment and posing in uniform on aircraft. Also pictured are midair photos of helicopters from the Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadron 1 and aircraft carriers. Eight pictures show the wreckage in the aftermath of a plane crash. It has anecdotally been suggested these are the work of Edward Steichen, although we could find no evidence to support this. A splendid and varied group of photos showing the Navy at work. FRANKLIN W. DIXON
1950. VERY GOOD CONDITION. Complete set of Vintage HARDY BOYS - VOLUMES 1-40 in Dust Jacket by Franklin W. Dixon This is a complete set of 40 dust jacketed Hardy Boys books from the wrap spine era. Not all of the original books came in a wrap jacket but all the ones that did are here. The yellow spine jackets are from the same era. Some are brown books and some are tweeds. Some have orange endpapers and some have mulit-pic. A few have some writing (name, inscription, etc.), light staining, stamps or stickers. Most do not. These are 1950's printings. Condition of the jackets can be seen in the photos. Overall, I would rate this set as VG to VG+. I believe #'s 39 & 40 are first printings (and maybe others). All of my dust jackets have mylar protectors which may cause some glare in the photos. Listed price includes FREE media mail shipping. Insurance not included but highly recommended. Pym, Roland, illustrator.
1950. First American editions. Dates from the copyright information printed on the covers of each item. London editions of each of these books were also published with copyright dates of 1950 and 1951. OCLC lists three Peepshow Books that only appeared in London editions: Beauty and the Beast, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and The Birth of Jesus. The present set of four books seems to comprise all of the Peepshow Books published in the United States.. Four carousel books, all 5inches by 7 inches. Each book with six "scenes," one on each face of the carousel. The scenes are richly illustrated in color on three overlapping, cut-away layers of stiff card paper (foreground, midground, and background), creating the effect of depth. Original pictorial paper-covered boards with solid-color spines. All four books include both of the original cloth ties at the fore-edge. A bit of rubbing at fore-edges and some chipping to paper spines, but overall a very good, bright, and clean set of lively and attractive books. Roland Pym (1910 – 2006) was a set designer, muralist, and book illustrator. He designed sets for theater productions of Eugene Onegin and Lohengrin, and his illustrations appeared in editions of Edith Sitwell's English Eccentrics, Nancy Mitford's Pursuit of Love, and W.M. Thackeray's Vanity Fair. Pym painted murals for several English nobles, including Nancy Astor (1879 – 1964), the first woman to take her seat as a Member of Parliament. [Attributes: First Edition]

Frege, Gottlob
Basil Blackwell, 1950. First English language edition. Hardcover. 8vo. [6], vii-xii(e), [2], II-xi(e), [4], 2-119(e), [3], pp. Bound in green cloth with gold lettering on the spine. Price of 16s. net on the front flap of the dust jacket. Translated by J. L. Austin. Until the publication of this book, the work of Frege, one of the principal founders of analytic philosophy and a key figure in the development of modern mathematical logic (including, perhaps most importantly, the development of quantificational or first-order logic), was generally inaccessible to those who could not read German (other than a few journal articles and references in the work of Russell et. al.). Foundations is one of Frege's most influential and best-known works and is concerned with the nature of number and mathematical truth (Oxford Companion to Philosophy, 294-297). A somewhat worn but presentable copy of this classic of analytic philosophy. Very Good / Near Very Good. A Very Good book with a small area bleached by the sun on the top of the spine and a former owner's name written on the free front endpaper in a Good to Very Good lightly edge worn dust jacket with darkening and a closed tear to the top of the spine panel. Foreword by Carl Jung
New York: Pantheon Books, 1950. First edition of this classic work. Octavo, 2 volumes. Review copy, with the slip laid in, near fine in very good dust jackets. Attributed to Fu Xi. Baynes' English rendering of Wilhelm's German translation. Introduction by Carl Jung. Uncommon. The I Ching usually translated as Book of Changes or Classic of Changes, is an ancient Chinese divination text and among the oldest of the Chinese classics. With more than two and a half millennia's worth of commentary and interpretation, the I Ching is an influential text read throughout the world, providing inspiration to the worlds of religion, philosophy, literature, and art. Originally a divination manual in the Western Zhou period (1000-750 BC), over the course of the Warring States period and early imperial period (500-200 BC) it was transformed into a cosmological text with a series of philosophical commentaries known as the "Ten Wings". After becoming part of the Five Classics in the 2nd century BC, the I Ching was the subject of scholarly commentary and the basis for divination practice for centuries across the Far East, and eventually took on an influential role in Western understanding of Eastern thought. The I Ching is used in a type of divination called cleromancy, which uses apparently random numbers. Six numbers between 6 and 9 are turned into a hexagram, which can then be looked up in the text, in which hexagrams arranged in an order known as the King Wen sequence. The interpretation of the readings found in the I Ching is a matter of centuries' debate, and many commentators have used … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lewis, C.S.
New York: Macmillan, 1950. Fine in near-fine jacket.. First American edition, first printing, of the first published book in the Narnia chronicles - rare in this condition. Four children are evacuated to the English countryside during the Blitz and discover Narnia through an old wardrobe. Not completed until 1949, Lewis had been working on a draft at least since 1939, but some aspects have deeper roots. The story grew in part from a picture that came into his head in his teen years: a faun, carrying an umbrella and some parcels through a snowy wood. That very image is printed on the dust jacket of this first American edition. Printed the same year as the British first, this is an amazingly nice copy.

Asimov, Isaac
New York: Gnome Press, 1950. First edition. Near fine in like jacket.. Signed first printing of one of the most influential science fiction books of the 20th century. The Three Laws of Robotics that Asimov developed through the series of short stories in this collection have had a foundational impact on the modern development of artificial intelligence: scientists and engineers working in the field who must make decisions on the structure of the codes for their machines must also consider the ethical implications of the commands they write. As a result, Asimov's three laws are among the founding principles all must grapple with. The first short story containing any of the Laws of Robotics is "Liar, " and the first appearance of all three laws in the short story "Runaround"; this is the first appearance in book form of both stories. The present is an oddly signed copy, obviously signed in haste and without much thought: Asimov has signed on the lower part of the rear endpaper, upsidedown, clearly having assumed he was signing on the top of the front endpaper. A lovely signed copy, with a jacket much nicer than typically found.

Bradbury, Ray
Garden City, New York: Doubleday & Company Inc, 1950. First edition. Very good plus in like jacket.. First printing in book form of this poetic exploration of colonizers' lives on Mars, one of the classics of mid-century science fiction. Bradbury weaves a series of vignettes into a larger view of his fantastical future world, beginning with an Ohio winter that becomes summer due to the heat of launching rockets, and ending with a father on Mars burning his old map of the Earth. The vignettes are drenched in color, often looking to provoke a particular feeling or simply stand as an exquisite image, resulting in an emotional impact that is uncommon in science fiction of the era. For this reason, THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES is at once a deeply beloved contribution to a fertile genre and entirely unique.

[Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]
