Scott Meredith
United States: Scott Meredith Literary Agency, 1950. United States: Scott Meredith Literary Agency. Good+. 1950. Hardcover. On offer is a heavily annotated hard back piece of non-fiction by one of America's greatest literary agents - including a signed letter from him affixed to the book. The book is entitled Writing to Sell and is authored by Scott Meredith. Meredith formed the Scott Meredith Literary Agency in 1946 with his first client, P. G. Wodehouse. In the next 50 years, the agency sold 25,000 titles of which over 1,500 remain in print today. Scott Meredith was a pioneering literary agent. He was among the first agents to develop and sell movie tie-in books for films including "West Side Story" and "Last Tango in Paris." The agency dominated the genres of science fiction, mystery and horror. The agency also managed prominent authors such as Norman Mailer, Arthur C. Clarke, Ed McBain, Philip K. Dick and Carl Sagan. The agency ran a "reading program" which evaluated whether unpublished manuscripts were commercial enough to sell and offered to represent those which were. The program became one of the most successful self-help direct response programs of the 20th century and the forerunner of self-publishing programs of today. Scott Meredith's biography, Writing to Sell, is widely acknowledged as one of the best primers on commercial fiction writing. Although Scott Meredith passed away in 1993, his agency lives on, continuing to be one of the foremost literary agencies in the world. What makes this copy of Writing to Sell so special is that there is a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Carco, Francis (poems) and André Dignimont (lithographs) [Artist's Wife's Copy]
Paris: Andr´┐Ż Sauret, 1950. Paris: André Sauret, 1950. First Thus. Hardcover. Fine. This collection of bohemian poems by the French Fantaisiste poet Francis Carco was first published in 1912. It proved to be a popular text for livres d'artiste, and illustrated versions appeared in 1927, 1943, 1950 (this), and 1974. This version, illustrated by Dignimont, may have been the most successful paring of artist and poet. This example of the Carco-Dignimont edition is the copy reserved for the artist's wife, with "Exemplaire réservé à Madame Dignimont" printed on the colophon. This copy matches the contents of the 12 copies on vélin de Rives, with the finished book accompanied by three extra suites of plates: one in color without the text ("une suite en couleurs"), a suite of single color lithographs ("une suite dans le ton du dessin"), and one of rejected designs ("une suite de lithographies refusées"). The book and extra suites of plates are unbound, being loose sheets laid into the printed covers, with a vellum-backed chemise. The two chemises fit into a two-compartment box. The colophon is signed by Carco and Dignimont. A fine copy, complete with all plates. Signed by Carco and Dignimont. This copy is additionally inscribed by Carco to Mme. Digninmont with a small self-portrait drawing.

Asimov, Isaac
New York: Gnome Press, Inc., 1950. First edition. A lovely first edition of the book, in Fine condition. In a Near Fine dust jacket with minor wear at the spine ends. This copy inscribed by Asimov on the front free end paper, "For Samuel A. Peeples - In the midst of robots, let's not forget there are peeples, too - 12/2/50 Isaac Asimov." A fantastic literary association, as Peeples and Asimov were authors with similar preoccupations. While Peeples is now remembered for his work as a script-writer for such sci-fi institutions as Star Trek, at the time he was a burgeoning author of westerns. Under the pen name Brad Ward, Peeples published his first two westerns in 1949 and 1952 -- books that were clearly on Asimov's radar and intersected with his own interest in the clash of cultures within a bordlerland. Rare in this condition and with an early (and fantastic) literary association. Throughout his career Asimov was interested in the collision of humanness with technology; and I, Robot's collection of short stories turned the science fiction genre on its head. Rather than depicting artificial intelligence as a danger to humanity, he suggested that the moment of cultural intersection between humans and humanoids could, in fact, rescue people from their worst natures. Through I, Robot, Asimov laid the foundations for his future fiction including his important Three Laws for robots. Adapted for several television and film programs, the most famous, I, Robot, starring Will Smith was loosely based on themes from the book and Asimov's Three Laws. It remains a work that is taught in … [Click Below for Full Description]

Frege, Gottlob
Oxford: Basil Blackwell, 1950. First English language edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Near Very Good. 8vo. [6], vii-xii(e), [2], II-xi(e), [4], 2-119(e), [3], pp. Bound in green cloth with gold lettering on the spine. Price of 16s. net on the front flap of the dust jacket. Translated by J. L. Austin. Until the publication of this book, the work of Frege, one of the principal founders of analytic philosophy and a key figure in the development of modern mathematical logic (including, perhaps most importantly, the development of quantificational or first-order logic), was generally inaccessible to those who could not read German (other than a few journal articles and references in the work of Russell et. al.). Foundations is one of Frege's most influential and best-known works and is concerned with the nature of number and mathematical truth (Oxford Companion to Philosophy, 294-297). A somewhat worn but presentable copy of this classic of analytic philosophy. A Very Good book with a small area bleached by the sun on the top of the spine and a former owner's name written on the free front endpaper in a Good to Very Good lightly edge worn dust jacket with darkening and a closed tear to the top of the spine panel.

1950. For auction is an original piece of artwork by the great book illustrator Edmund Dulac. This is a preparatory sketch for Tales From The Arabian Nights, for American Weekly, 1950. It is beautifully drawn in pencil on a thin parchment style paper. The paper is a light buff colour - this its natural original colour and not the effect of sun or aging. The drawing is framed. It is unsigned. The frame measures approx 58cms x 48cms, the drawing is 15cms x 22 cms. The artwork is in excellent condition. The labels on the back reference titles, date and artist. Biogs of Dulac are and his significance as an artist are easy to find on an internet search. His work for American Weekly is also documented. The provenance of this piece is exceptional. I bought it for perhaps the worlds best authority on Dulac - it originally came from Dulac's studio sale. Any questions please ask in advance of the auction's finish. I aim to post all items within 5 days of payment, often a lot sooner. Payment requested via Paypal within 3 days of auction's close please. All items will be sent "special delivery" or international equivalent to cover the value in transit.
