GROUP LEVEL PRINTING. 1st edition 2nd printing of The Eye Opener printed in 1952 sponsored by the Old Dominion Group in Virginia. Alcoholics Anonymous member Robbie R. wrote this daily meditation book, and like Twenty Four Hours A Day, it was first published and distributed at the group level only. Eventually, Hazelden took over publication and the 1st Hazelden printing was called the 2nd edition. Info on dating this book... "Thanks to additional information provided by Richard H. and David M., I believe we can now, with great certainty, date the original publication of The Eye Opener to 1951. The case for it's being published in 1951 is strong for three reasons: 1) In The Eye Opener, the reading for July 24th states, in part: "Last year I attended the Southeastern Convention at Miami Beach [...]." Thanks to a dated copy that recently surfaced, we know the book was in print by September of 1955. Prior to 1955, the Southeastern Convention was held in Miami on only one occasion: 1950. So, 1950+"last year"=1951 2) The First Edition of The Eye Opener states on its full title page: "Sponsored By Alexandria Group Alcoholics Anonymous." In Virginia's Path, published by the VA Area Archives, it states that Robbie (the author of The Eye Opener) broke away from the Alexandria Group in 1952 to form the Old Dominion Group. I believe it is reasonable to assume that the Alexandria Group would have published the book while Robbie was still a member of it. Hence, it would have been produced prior to his departure in 1952. 3) In both group level printings of The Eye Opener, the reading for … [Click Below for Full Description]

Steinbeck, John
New York: The Viking Press, 1952. First edition. First state, with "bite" on page 281. Near Fine book in like jacket with tape ghost to rear endpaper. Jacket with the slightest bit of toning to the spine and small nicks to the spine foot. A pleasing copy overall retaining the bright pastels of the jacket. Steinbeck's classic tale of the Trask and Hamilton families set in the Salinas Valley. The Nobel Prize winning writer considered this his greatest work and, in fact, a young Steinbeck actually makes a small appearance in the novel as a character. East of Eden was a bestseller and became extremely popular upon its release. Steinbeck wrote a friend: "I am getting flocks of letters [ . . .] People write as though it were their book." The popularity of the book would undergo a resurgence in 2003, when it was an Oprah's Book Club pick. More famously, the book has been adapted into a 1955 film, directed by Elia Kazan and featuring James Dean in one of his few starring roles. The movie appears on AFI's list of the Top 400 American Films. "But no one can doubt its merits as the work of a great storyteller. It compels and holds the reader's fascinated attention from the first chapter to the last" (Contemporary review in the Washington Post). Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. Smith, Pete (producer, narrator); Dave O'Brien (director, screenwriter); Joe Ansen, Julian Harmon, David Barclay (screenwriter); Jeff York, Dorothy Short, Sally Payne (starring)
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer [MGM], Beverly Hills, CA, 1952. Four Draft scripts for three Pete Smith production shorts "The Camera Caught It" (1954), "Bandage Bait" (1951), and "Bargain Madness" (1951), seen here under the title "Dollar Day". Collection of scripts for three of Pete Smith's later short productions: "The Camera Caught It," "Bandage Bait," and "Bargain Madness". "Bargain Madness" features a passive aggressive fight between two neighboring housewives who attempt to shop at the same department store sale, "Bandage Bait" a barrage of idiotic ways to injure oneself in various places, and "The Camera Caught It" a humorously-narrated series of unusual acts caught on camera. Smith produced and narrated over 150 shorts between the 1930s and 1955, beginning his career at MGM as a publicist and moving on to narration when others noticed his knack for comedy. His unmistakable sharp tenor and nasal tone unwittingly became the analog, the voice we expect to hear in all shorts and news reels of the era, and he was awarded an Honorary Academy Award in 1953 for his work. The Camera Caught It (copy No. 38): Goldenrod titled wrappers, rubber-stamped copy No. 38, dated 7-9-52, with credits for producer Pete Smith and screenwriter Joe Ansen. [MAP – ASIA – MIDDLE EAST]. NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC SOCIETY.
Large map of Asia and the Middle-East in 1952, published for the National Geographic Magazine. The map clearly shows the unresolved nature of several borders due to the waning colonial power of France and Great Britain. Notations mention that the "boundaries between India and Pakistan are not finally fixed", the borders between Saudi Arabia and Jordan are "undefined". almost the complete Arabian Peninsula is without any border markings with only the single mention near Saudi Arabia and Trucial Oman (the future UAE) of "coastal sovereignty undefined". Showing the world before the oil boom in the Middle East, it is noteworthy that the only significant airport in Trucial Oman is that of Sharjah. With two stamps of the University of Chicago library (including one withdrawal stamp) on the back. A few small repaired tears and some discolouring at the edges; in very good condition.

MACLAREN, Mary
New York: Exposition Press, 1952. First edition. Octavo. 229pp. A little foxing on the endpapers and corners nominally bumped, near fine in very good or better, price-clipped dustwrapper with a small tear and very shallow loss at the spine ends. A vanity press novel by a Los Angeles-based silent film star best known for her starring role in the 1916 film *Shoes* helmed by female director Lois Webe and named to the Library of Congress National Film Registry in 2014. The novel, perhaps autobiographical, is about a woman who marries a "halfman, " (that is, a gay man), and which according to the jacket subtitle is "the revealing story of a strange love." The book bears the printed dedication: "To my favorite living author James M. Cain who, out of the fullness of his generous heart, was kind enough to edit this, my first novel. With profound gratitude...." Reportedly MacLaren also got editing help from another master of noir fiction, Jim Thompson, who lived with her for a time in her decrepit Hollywood mansion. Exceptionally uncommon. Near Fine in Very Good jacket. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]
