        The Poems

London: Macmillan & Co. Ltd,, 1949. 2 volumes, tall octavo. Original bright green cloth over bevelled boards, gilt lettered spines, author's monogram in gilt on front covers, top edges gilt. With the original glassine dust jackets and slipcase. Photogravure portrait frontispieces of Yeats by Emery Walker after John Singer Sargent and Augustus John. Prelims and edges of book block a little foxed, otherwise a very good set, with the original publisher's prospectus (foxed). First variorum edition, limited to 375 numbered copies signed by Yeats, and published by Macmillan as the Definitive Edition, beautifully printed in Fournier type on laid paper. The edition was personally overseen by Yeats's widow, George, the publisher Harold Macmillan and the publisher's reader Thomas Mark; as stated in the prospectus: "For some time before his death [in 1939], W. B. Yeats was engaged in revising the text of this edition of his poems, of which he had corrected the proofs, and for which he had signed the special page to appear at the beginning of Volume I [the limitation sheet]". Yeats was, of course, a constant reviser of his work - which makes this definitive edition all the more important.

IL MONDO, settimanale diretto da MARIO PANNUNZIO Rara collezione (1949 - 1966) TUTTO IL PUBBLICATO - , Miano, Mazzocchi Gianni - Edit. Domus, 1949

New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1949. First American Edition. First Printing, one of 20,000 copies. Octavo; publisher's taupe cloth, with titles stamped in maroon and red on spine and front cover; dustjacket; 314pp, [2]. Superlative copy of Orwell's towering work of dystopian fiction, the vocabulary of which has become a part of the fabric of our culture. The rather sizeable print run throws out any notion of rarity, but jacketed copies in true collectors condition are genuinely uncommon. Basis for two notable film adaptations: Michael Anderson's 1956 film starring Edmund O'Brien, and the Michael Radford's later picture starring John Hurt and Richard Burton.         Quartet. Four Stories by . Screenplays by R.C. Sherriff

Doubleday & Company, Garden City, N.Y. 1949 - First American edition. 1 vols. 12mo. Inscribed. Inscribed to the wife of New Yor Post columnist, Leonard Lyons, who was for many years one of New York's most prominent journalists. His column in the New York Post, "The Lyons' Den" was widely read and immensely popular during the many years since its commencement in 1934. Unlike many of his colleagues, however, Lyons was highly respected for his fairness and highmindedness. According to Ralph Blumenthal in STORK CLUB (Boston, 2000), "Lyons didn't believe in writing about romances and divorces. Nor, it was said, did he ever violate a confidence . He corresponded with world leaders and literary giants . " (p. 131); and he counted among his friends celebrities as diverse as Ernest Hemingway (at whose funeral Lyons was pallbearer), Marilyn Monroe, and Orson Welles.Maugham has inscribed the flyleaf: "For Sylvia Lyons / W. Somerset Maugham." Black cloth. Upper cover slightly stained, else very good, in soiled and chipped dust jacket [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        2 typed letters signed.

New York and Pacific Palisades, California, 8 May 1949 and 21 Jan. 1950.. 8vo and 4to. Together 3 pp.. In English, both to Jerome Bengis, on imprinted stationery of the St. Regis: "Although I have myself recently become a musician of sorts, music is not really my field and as a critic of the type of book the author of which you are I am hardly competent" (8 May 1949). On 21 January 1950 he writes: "I have now occupied myself with your play, and although I feel on quite uncertain ground in the dramatic field, I dare say quite generally that your idea is original and its treatment effective and poetic in parts. Of course, the obstacles to a performance are quite obvious to me, for the Church more influential than ever in this country will certainly not tolerate the person of the Redeemer to be brought on the stage, even though the action takes place in pre-evangelic times".

Presidential Oil Painting by Dwight D. Eisenhower of Wilton B. Persons III, grandson of his Chief of Staff and World War II comrade, Major General Wilton B. Persons. The portrait has an uncanny resemblance to Ike himself!

The White House, n.d.. 19" x 23". "Original Oil Painting of Wilton B. Persons III, grandson of Major General Wilton B. Persons, painted by President Eisenhower in The White House, 15.25"" x 19.25"". Signed ""Eisenhower"" in the lower right. Matted and framed to 19"" x 23"". Fine condition. This portrait was painted by Eisenhower as a gift to Persons, his Chief of Staff, during his term of office at the White House. The Eisenhower Administration project at Columbia University refers to this painting and the study on the third floor of the White House where Pres. Eisenhower painted it.Accompanied by a printed image of President Eisenhower painting. In 2014, a slightly smaller 1949 oil painting by General Eisenhower of his wartime cottage south of London was estimated to sell for $100,000 to $150,000. As most of Eisenhower's paintings were of landscapes and buildings, his portraits are highly desirable, such as the oil portrait here offered depicting the grandson of his Chief of Staff. It is interesting to note that the portrait looks like a very young Eisenhower, something artists do at times subconsciously. Also included is an Eisenhower Typed Letter Signed to Major General Wilton B. Persons on gilt ""DDE"" stationery. Fine condition.TLS ""Ike,"" 1 page, 7"" x 10.25"". Gettysburg, Pa., November 30, 1962. To Major General Wilton B. It includes my days at NATO in Paris and the first three years of my Presidency, ending on February 29, 1956, the day I announced I would stand for re-election. Since memory is a fallible thing, I am writing to ask if you would review certain of the chapters ... for me before the manuscript goes to press ...""ProvenanceMajor General Wilton Burton ""Jerry"" Persons (1896-1977) served as the White House Chief of Staff to President Dwight D. Eisenhower from October 7, 1958 until January 20, 1961 and was Eisenhower's representative in the transition of government between the Eisenhower and Kennedy administrations. He was a career United States Army officer who had entered the U.S. Army Coast Artillery in 1917 and advanced through the ranks to Major General in 1944. He had served in both the American Expeditionary Force in World War I and in Europe in World War II. He headed the office of legislative liaison for the Department of Defense between 1948 and his retirement in 1949.Major General Persons was called back to active duty as a special assistant to General Dwight D. Eisenhower at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers in Europe from 1951?"1952 and was active on behalf of Eisenhower's presidential campaign in 1952. He became a Deputy Assistant to the President in 1953 and replaced Sherman Adams as Eisenhower's Chief of Staff in 1958.Following the 1960 presidential election, Major General Persons was President Eisenhower's representative in the transition of government between the Eisenhower and Kennedy administrations working out the details for a smooth transfer of government. From the Estate of Major General Wilton B. A pre-publication, uncased publisher's copy with sewn signatures, pictorial endpapers, some uneven toning. Signed by Arthur Miller in a contemporary signature. Housed in publisher's cloth slipcase.
