WILLIAMS, William Carlos
Rutherford, NJ: (1948). Group of 3 Letters, each SIGNED "William," one with a PS SIGNED "W. C. Williams," to Ralph G. Ross, including a handwritten letter and two typed letters, concerning Williams' recent plays. In the first letter, one page typed on Williams' personal stationery (6-1/2" x 10-1/4"), dated 15 January 1948, the poet thanks Ross for helping to get his plays heard: "What you have accomplished toward getting my plays a hearing is so much more than I thought possible for them that I am left speechless.... [T]here's no escaping an actual trial on the boards, before witnesses, to school a man in these things. At once a different mood possesses him -- he must succeed or fail not on what he has written but by what happens before the eyes of others.... No doubt, certain parts of both plays need to be rewritten. I'll be glad to hear what others may say of that." In the second letter, typed single-space on three 8-1/2" x 11" sheets of paper, Williams expresses sympathy for Ross's desire to start his own theater, agreeing with him that modern theater producers are slavish and have poor taste. "A few weeks ago I had a letter from two people, jointly, calling themselves THE LIVING THEATRE with an address on 2nd Ave in New York. They were Julian Beck and Judith Malina. Ever hear of them? They said point blank that they wanted to produce one of my plays -- A DREAM OF LOVE in particular." Williams assures Ross that he is committed to him and "that you come first," but asks advice about various offers he's received and which he outlines in detail, ultimately saying, "Think ov … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bettina Rheims (Autor), Catherine Millet (Autor)
Taschen, 1948.
