NIN, Anais.
n.p: [Gemor Press], [1948]. 8vo., illustrated paper wrappers with engravings by Ian Hugo; folding advertisment tipped in; pp. 101, [iii]; spine a little rubbed and darkened, else a clean copy internally. First softcover edition as stated, inscribed by the author thus: "For Mr. Aage Dons. My grandfather was Danish - his name was Thorwald Christensen. He went to Cuba as Consul, married a French woman from New Orleans, stayed there. My brother is called Thorwald. I have relations in Denmark and I love Isak Dinesen - I hope these tales remind you a little of her - ! Anais Nin". This collection of stories broke the traditional American boundaries of social realism. With a focus on the unconscious, Nin began writing at a time when the theories of Freud and other psychoanalysts were relatively new. As she explains in The Novel of.the Future, much of her work has followed Jung's dictum of 'Proceed from the dream outward'. She writes; "The dream was to be the genesis, the birthplace of our life. The novels were to be the constant description of going into life and back into the dream to seek the self when it lost its way. In a sense, I continued to say: the dream is the key, the source, the birthplace of our most authentic self". Contents: Houseboat; Under A Glass Bell; Je Suis Le Plus Malade des Surrealists; Ragtime; The Labyrinth; The All-Seeing; Birth; The Mouse; The Mohican; Through the Streets of My Own Labyrinth; The Eye's Journey; The Child Born Out of the Fog; and Hejda. Carnegie, Dale
Simon & Schuster, New York, 1948. Early printing of one of the best-selling books of all time. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Dale Carnegie on the front free endpaper. Near fine in a good dust jacket. This grandfather of all people-skills books was first published in 1937. It was an overnight hit, eventually selling 15 million copies. How to Win Friends and Influence People is just as useful today as it was when it was first published, because Dale Carnegie had an understanding of human nature that will never be outdated. Financial success, Carnegie believed, is due 15 percent to professional knowledge and 85 percent to "the ability to express ideas, to assume leadership, and to arouse enthusiasm among people." He teaches these skills through underlying principles of dealing with people so that they feel important and appreciated. He also emphasizes fundamental techniques for handling people without making them feel manipulated. Carnegie says you can make someone want to do what you want them to by seeing the situation from the other person's point of view and "arousing in the other person an eager want." You learn how to make people like you, win people over to your way of thinking, and change people without causing offense or arousing resentment. For instance, "let the other person feel that the idea is his or hers," and "talk about your own mistakes before criticizing the other person." BERRYMAN, John.
New York: William Sloane Associates, 1948. 38 unbound numbered leaves, printed on rectos only, first and last pages rubber-stamped "Finished / Feb 23 1948 / The Maple Press Co", with publisher's slip. Housed in custom plain paper portfolio and blue buckram folding case. Creasing and chipping to page extremities, some toning, final leaf soiled and heavily torn though without loss to text, publisher's slip creased and chipped with slight loss to text. The galley proofs for Berryman's Dispossessed, with 12 manuscript annotation, mostly ticks, asterisks and queries of underlined lines. There is some variation between the text of the proofs and that of the printed version, which is unrecorded by Charles Thornbury in his edition of Berryman's Collected Poems (Faber and Faber, 1990). The Dispossessed was Berryman's first major work, his second overall following Poems in 1942.

Stark, Freya
John Murray, London, 1948. First edition of this classic work. Octavo, original cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To dear Hugh with true friendship from Freya June 1949." Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Wood engravings by Reynolds Stone. Perseus in the Wind is probably the most personal of all Freya Stark's writings. In it she muses on the seasons, the effect light has on a landscape at a particular time of day, the smell of the earth after rain, Muslim saints, Indian temples, war and old age. Each chapter is devoted to a particular theme including Happiness, Beauty, Death; Memory, The Artist, Style, Words, Women's Education, Sorrow and of course, Travel. For those who have loved her travel writing, this work illuminates the motivations behind her journeys and the woman behind the traveler.
