Milton's Paradise Lost. Illustrated by... Edited with notes and a Life of Milton by Robert Vaughan.

London: Cassell & Company, [1880s]. . 4to, lxii, 329, (1) pp. 50 plates. Binding designed by E. McKnight Kauffer with his initials to a label to the foot of the paste down and to the fly leaf, the former being pasted over his initials scratched into the lower dentelle. Later blue-green morocco, a.e.g., spine faded to brown, upper cover with a stylised angel onlaid in brown calf, its trumpet, hair, sword and wings being picked out in gilt and blind, the title below in gilt. Some light rubbing, damp stain to the inner edge of the upper cover, some subtle restoration to the lower cover. A unique copy of Doré's wonderful illustrations to "Paradise Lost". Goodwin (1943), has similar use of horizontal gilt lines to striking effect.

        The Gremlins

New York: Random House,, 1943. From the Walt Disney Production. A Royal Air Force Story. Quarto. Original red cloth backed red boards, titles to spine in black, colour illustration to upper board, yellow and red pictorial endpapers. With the dust jacket. Illustrations throughout. Upper edges of boards rubbed, partial tanning to endpapers. An excellent copy in the rubbed and nicked jacket with faded spine panel and some nicks, closed tears, and creased areas. First edition, first impression of Roald Dahl's first book, and his only book with Walt Disney. "Disney tried to make a film of one of Dahl's stories called 'The Gremlins' (1943), which concerned a tribe of goblins who were blamed by the RAF for everything that went wrong with an aircraft. Gremlin stories were rife in the RAF at the time, and several other books about them had already appeared, but Dahl was happy to boast that he had invented them. 'The Gremlins' was such a success that the self-dramatizing RAF hero became a frequent guest of Eleanor and Franklin D. Roosevelt at the White House and their weekend retreat, Hyde Park. This entrée was exploited by the British intelligence services, who made him a spy – on the Americans. Or so Dahl later claimed" (ODNB).

Vote The Defeatists Out Of Public Office! Unconditional Surrender of the Hitler Axis and the 5th Column! All-Out Production For Victory

New York: Artist's League of America, [ca 1943]. An extremely scarce example of an American hand-stenciled propaganda poster, inspired by and executed in the style of the Soviet "Tass Windows." The Artist's League of America was a group of socially-concerned artists in New York, organized in the wake of the American Artist's Congress and headed by such notable figures as Lynd Ward, Phillip Evergood, Rockwell Kent, Charles Keller and others. The "Victory Workshop" was a small working group within the ALA tasked with producing material to support the American war effort. The group held a well-publicized exhibition in March-April 1943 at the New School For Social Research, titled "Art, A Weapon of Total War", emphasizing work "[suitable for] murals and panels for factory rest-rooms, cafeterias, union halls and workers' housing....exhibition and silkscreen murals....window and lobby displays; and various visual aids" (see Hemingway, Artists on the Left: American Artists and the Communist Movement, 1926-1956, New Haven: 2002, p.192-194). It is at this exhibition that the current work, calling for a United Front against Hitler's Germany and the removal from public life of such divisive (i.e., anti-New Deal) figures as Dies, J. Edgar Hoover, Hamilton Fish, etc.& & The degree to which such Victory Workshop stencils can be attributed to Charles Keller is debatable; however, Keller is generally acknowledged to have been the main creative force behind the workshop and it ia likely that he at least played an overarching creative role in all posters produced there. Extremely rare; no other examples in commerce of any Victory Workshop works, and only one example known (of a different work) at the Wolfsonian Museum, Miami. Original stenciled poster in 7 panels, overall size approx. 52" x 76". Panels assembled at an early date (probably as issued), the whole professionaly stabilized and laid down on archival linen backing. Small losses at folds, slight offsetting at panel junctures from adhesive backing; still Very Good, with no incursions into image area. Grade B.

Un brin défraîchi come presque toujours.

DOCUMENT SIGNED (DS): Statement by HERBERT HOOVER for release to all editions of morning papers

28 June 1943. Document. Near Fine, a remarkable and scarce piece. A scarce one-page press release of @300 words, SIGNED both in type and holograph by Hoover at the conclusion, regarding the need to pass the Fulmer Bill and to create the position of Food Administrator in the Roosevelt administration. Hoover was appointed this very position by Woodrow Wilson at the end of the World War I. During this time, Franklin Roosevelt said about him: "He is certainly a wonder, and I wish we could make him president of the United States." That wish did, of course, come true, and Hoover served during the worst economic depression in the nation's history, sans technology stocks. He was overwhelmingly defeated for reelection by the very man who wished he would become president. In part: "No responsible person has proposed a Food 'Czar,' nor an Angel Gabriel. What large sections of the country and the House Agricultural Committee have demanded is a Food Administrator, acting within laws passed by Congress and under the President. We need a manager, not a 'dictator.'" An interesting Hoover piece, probably limited to distribution to certain major newspapers, and quite unlikely that many have survived. This comes from the estate of an editor for a major New York newspaper.

The Grand Project or the Sapper's Nightmare. (2nd. Edition)

Maldon, August 1943 - Quarto, original dark blue calf on bevelled boards, blind panelling to the boards. A little rubbed at the spine, else very good. 6 original pen and ink "plates" and 3 similar illustrations to the text, carbon copy type-script. A "revised edition" of a spoof produced in perhaps two copies by "Arthur," the commander of a Sappers unit attached to the 79th Armoured Division, this one being sent to his friend Major Douglas Bain of the Hampshire Regiment. Relates, with typical facetious British Army humour, the events surrounding the development and testing of the DD (Dual Duplex) Amphibious Tanks at Fritton near Great Yarmouth. Part of the secret preparations for D-Day, the amphibious Valentines and Shermans had to be kept "under wraps," a idea which was nearly taken literally when it was found that they they had to be run back to HQ via a public road. The GOC suggested "we'll wrap them up in canvas like a lot of Moslem Women," and the name stuck. Perhaps we learn nothing new on the technical battles with problems of flotation, but this an evocative piece which gives a good idea of the humour with which the impossible was achieved, and the drawings are very stylish and far more competent than amateur.

        A MINGLED CHIME An Autobiography

New York, G. P. Putnam's Sons, (1943).. FIRST EDITION (1943), INSCRIBED TO BERNARD HERRMANN BY SIR THOMAS BEECHAM. 8vo, 235 x 155 mm, 9¼ x 6 inches, pages viii, 330 including index, bound in original publisher's blue cloth, gilt lettering to spine. Spine slightly darkened, gilt dull, head and tail of spine just very slightly worn with a couple of minute nicks to cloth, small water spot on upper cover, lower cover slightly marked, corners just very slightly worn, otherwise a clean tight copy. From the library of Bernard Herrmann inscribed to him in ink on the half-title by the celebrated conductor Sir Thomas Beecham: "To my friend Bernard Herrman with his kindest wishes, Thomas Beecham May 7/43". Bernard Herrmann (1911 – 1975) was an American composer famous for his work in motion pictures. An Academy Award-winner (for The Devil and Daniel Webster, 1941), he is particularly known for his collaborations with director Alfred Hitchcock, most famously Psycho, North by Northwest, The Man Who Knew Too Much, and Vertigo. He also composed notable scores for many other movies, including Citizen Kane, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, Cape Fear, and Taxi Driver. He worked extensively in radio drama (most notably for Orson Welles), composed the scores for several fantasy films by Ray Harryhausen, and many TV programs including Rod Serling's The Twilight Zone and Have Gun – Will Travel. He became Chief Conductor to the CBS Symphony Orchestra in 1943 and was responsible for introducing more new works to U.S. audiences than any other conductor. During the 1940s, Herrmann's own concert music was taken up and played by such celebrated maestri as Leopold Stokowski, Sir John Barbirolli, Sir Thomas Beecham and Eugene Ormandy.         THE MASS EXTERMINATION OF JEWS IN GERMAN OCCUPIED POLAND: NOTE ADDRESSED TO THE GOVERNMENTS OF THE UNITED NATIONS ON DECEMBER 10TH, 1942, AND OTHER DOCUMENTS

Affairs By Hutchinson & Co.. [1943]. Stapled as issued in original wrappers. 8vo. 16 pages. 22 cm. National Government Publication. Printed in red and black ink. One of the first official announcements of the Holocaust. Jan Karski-Kozielski, a Polish Government emissary in occupied Poland, bribed his way into a German concentration camp and witnessed the mass extermination of Jews. “In November 1942 he arrived in London to report on German atrocities in occupied Poland. He reported to the Polish Government, Szmul Zagielboin and Ignacy Schwartzbart (Jewish members of the Polish National Council), Anthony Eden (the British Foreign Minister) and the British parliament. In America, he reported in Washington to President Roosevelt and in New York to the International Jewish Council. As a result, the Allied governments issued a statement that the people responsible for atrocities would be punished. On 10 December 1942, the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a note to Allied and neutral governments on the mass extermination of Jews in German-occupied Poland and requested retaliatory bombing of German cities. Both the British and American governments refused to act" (Andrzej Dabrowa, "Breaking the Enigma code: Polish contribution to victory").Lucy Dawidowicz cites the book in her now classic work, “The Holocaust and the Historians” (Harvard, 1983, p. 167) , as an example of the Polish Government in Exile’s statements on the murder of Jews in Poland. Indeed, the report could not be more explicit in its description of the horrors nor in its plea for help: "The new methods of mass slaughter applied during the last few months confirm the fact that the German authorities aim with systematic deliberation at the total extermination of the Jewish population of Poland and of the many thousands of Jews whom the German authorities have departed to Poland from Western and Central European countries and from the German Reich itself. The Polish Government consider it their duty to bring to the knowledge of the Governments of all civilised countries the following fully authenticated information received from Poland during recent weeks, which indicates all too plainly the new methods of extermination adopted by the German authorities." The report then elaborates: "The actual process of deportation was carried out with appalling brutality. At the appointed hour on each day the German police cordoned off a block of houses selected for clearance, entered the back yard and fired their guns at random, as a signal for all to leave their homes and assemble in the yard. Anyone attempting to escape or to hide was killed on the spot. No attempt was made by the Germans to keep families together. Wives were torn from their husbands and children from their parents. Those who appeared frail or infirm were carried straight to the Jewish cemetery to be killed and buried there. On the average 50-100 people were disposed of in this way daily. After the contingent was assembled, the people were packed forcibly into cattle trucks to the number of 120 in each truck, which had room for forty. The trucks were then locked and sealed. The Jews were suffocating for lack of air. The floors of the trucks were covered with quicklime and chlorine. As far as is known, the trains were despatched to three localities – Treblinka, Belzec and Sobibor, to what the reports describe as ‘Extermination camps.’ The very method of transport was deliberately calculated to cause the largest possible number of casualties among the condemned Jews. It is reported that on arrival in camp the survivors were stripped naked and killed by various means, including poison gas and electrocution. The dead were interred in mass graves dug by machinery." Subjects: World War, 1939-1945 - Jews - Poland. World War, 1939-1945 - Poland - Atrocities. Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) - Poland. Jews - Poland. Staples with minor rust, light aging and light soiling to front wrap, internally very clean and fresh. Very Good condition. A copy with similar rust stains sold in June 2013 at auction for over USD 3800. Rare and very important. (HOLO2-97-48) .

        GIDEON PLANISH

Random House (1943), New York - INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author to the actress Lillian Gish: "To my darling/Lillian Gish with/blessings from/Hollywood/Sinclair Lewis/Sept. 2, 1943." A fairly early presentation as the novel was published in April of 1943 and certainly an important one as Lillian Gish and her sister Dorothy were friends of Lewis's. The book is cocked and likely Lewis was also at the time of the presentation as he inscribed the book upside down on the rear endpaper, obviously holding the book upside down while writing. Very minor wear to the lower corners. Very Good in a Very Good dustwrapper with minor chipping to the spine tips [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

â??America is not and never was a matter of race or ancestry.â?

U.S. Government Printing Office: Wartime poster, 27 ¾ x19 ¾, large eagle engraving at the top of the poster, printed in red and black. Creases where folded. This rare U.S. Government wartime poster attempts to promote equality by reminding Americans that race and ancestry shouldnâ??t matter in our country. It reminds us that every American â??should be given the opportunity to serve the countryâ? and help the war effort. While this was certainly a noble goal, this poster was printed at a time when our armed forces were still largely segregated.

Kennedy was born December 4, 1917 to Jefferson Kennedy, Sr., a prominent businessman, and Jimmye deLashmet Kennedy in Chicago, and attended Westminster School for Boys in Connecticut, and Rollins College in Florida. He came from a distinguished military family. He was descended from the youngest of four brothers all of whom fought in the Confederate cavalry and, except for his grandfather, died in the Civil War. Early in 1940, realizing that war was highly probable, he joined the US Navy as an aviation cadet, and was commissioned an Ensign in the US Naval Reserve a year before Pearl Harbor, having qualified as an aircraft carrier pilot. After commissioning, he served as an instructor. Following the outbreak of war at Pearl Harbor he was assigned to squadron VFB 16 which was a fighter bomber squadron based on the aircraft carrier USS Lexington, then based in San Diego. Kennedy served with valor in WW II and the Korean War, receiving ten medals for bravery, including five Air Medals, three Distinguished Flying Crosses, and the Purple Heart. During his naval career he commanded the first jet recon squadron in the US Navy, graduated from the US War College, taught Naval and Military History at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, and served as Flag Secretary and Aide to the US Chief of Naval Operations. He subsequently served as Executive Officer and then Captain of the aircraft carrier USS Leyte. Among the naval experiences Kennedy relished was sharing drinks with Winston Churchill when he came to the US early in 1946 to give his famous "Iron Curtain" speech. Kennedy also enjoyed an honorary appointment as "Admiral of the Texas Navy", an award presented to him by Texas Governor Price Daniels in recognition of his wartime service. Kennedy was honorably discharged from the US Navy with the rank of Commander in 1961. Thereafter he served in several corporate posts including as Vice President of American Distilling Company and subsequently as President of Schenley International, where he oversaw marketing to Asia and Europe. He retired to Margate in 1986 and joined the Atlantic City Country Club, where he enjoyed many rounds of golf with his friends over the years. Kennedy is survived by his four nieces: Whitney Clay Diller of Nashville, Ashton deLashmet Clay of Chicago, Courtney Clay Peraza of Solana Beach, California, and Leslie Clay of Managua, Nicaragua. He is predeceased by his beloved wife, Berenice Connor Kennedy of Margate and his sister Patricia Kennedy Clay of West Virginia. Although Commander Kennedy's status as a decorated WWII veteran entitled him to a full military funeral, his wishes were for a private service. DATE PUBLISHED: EDITION: [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Four small spots to upper edge of textblock, with a single dog-eared page smoothed out, else Fine. Dustjacket is price-clipped, with a few pinpoint rubs to extremities; very Near Fine, without a hint of the usual tanning to the spine. Basis for three notable adaptations - first as 'The Lady and the Monster' in 1944, the 1953 Felix Feist film of the same name, starring Lew Ayres, Gene Evans and Nancy Reagan, and the lesser-known 1962 film 'The Brain,' directed by Freddie Francis.         Personal Diary while I was in Mesopotamia [manuscript] T. W. Slingsby December 13, 1916-June 30, 1918

[Ms, North Riding, Yorkshire?] 1943. Manuscript; 56 leaves, 4 sketch maps; 23 cm. Thomas William Slingsby, born 6 March 1876, entered the Army in 1899. In 1905 he transferred to the Indian Army, in B Squadron, 22nd Cavalry, "The Sam Browne Cavalry" of the Frontier Force. The Army List for 1912 (p. 685) enters him as a Captain. He was promoted Major 1 March 1914 (cf. 1919 Army List, p. 319a). This diary covers his service in the Mesopotamian Campaign where Slingsby won the D.S.O. (An article in the London Gazette of 16 December 1919 published the details of the action that resulted in the award.) December 13, 1916 was the date of the beginning of General Sir Frederick Stanley Maude's invasion of Turkish Iraq after the disaster at Kut. Major Slingsby's diary provides a daily account of the campaign in territory now familiar to a generation that has its own war defending oil interests in the Persian Gulf as a reference. The 1932 Army List (p. 220) lists Slingsby as a retired Major in the Northern Command of "The Remount Service" at North Riding. He died 8 November 1962 and is buried with his wife, Dorothy May Hole Slingsby, in the Northallerton Cemetery. stock#OB760.
