Universal City, CA: Universal Pictures, 1944. Draft script for the 1945 film. "To Central Files" in holograph pencil on the front wrapper, and a credit for screenwriter Bricker. The sixth and final Inner Sanctum installment, featuring spiritualists, a haunted house, and a murder by suffocation, in what was seemingly a last gasp from the studio's film series. With the help psychic Julian Julian (Bromberg), the police investigate the murder. The psychic's motives are questionable, but he says he can contact Wayne's dead wife. At a seance to reach Vivian's spirit, the reluctant Wayne hears what he thinks is her voice but discovers Julian Julian in the shadows and accuses him of conspiracy. After several sleepless nights haunted by the voice of his lost wife, Wayne finally "gives in" to her spirit and attempts to kill Donna with a pillow, but is overpowered by police and leaps from a window to his death, per his wife's instructions.Gray card titled wrappers, rubber-stamped production No. 7285, dated November 20 1944, with a credit for screenwriter Bricker. N.p: N.p., 1944-1966. Prints are intended as press photos, thus most are pasted to paper with filing notes and captions handwritten or typewritten and pasted to recto and verso. In some cases, "Iran" or cropping dimensions are indicated in marker on the print face. All prints and newspaper clippings are uniformly near fine, showing signs of their age but still sharp and clean, protected in acetate album sleeves. Housed in a paper folder and clamping black vinyl album case in very good condition.. A collection of 52 original silver gelatin prints, mostly 8"X10", documenting health, agriculture, infrastructure, and industry in Iran during the era of Mohammad Reza Shah. Two prints are are credited to Marc Riboud, among other photographers, including Tony Chapelle, Alice Schalek, Joe Covello, Mary Hill, and Max Winter. Also included in the album are four anti-Shah satirical cartoons clipped from American newspapers circa the 1950s, and two small maps of Iran from 1962. The spirit of the photographs is one of modernization and globalization among artifacts of an ancient civilization. However, the accompanying satirical cartoons, which mock the Shah for his dependence on foreign aid, suggest something of the political crisis brewing in the midst of such reinvention, hinting at the radical departure the country would take by the end of the '70s.

The exeedingly scarce first state dust jacket is NOT price clipped and in very good condition with usual toning commensurate with age and edge wear as shown. Now protected in remobvable mylar. 'What is Life?' was a seminal book based on Schrödinger's lectures from 1943. The book was crucial in influencing further scientists, especially in molecular biology where Wattson and Crick discovered the double helix. A landmark book. Few scientists have managed to engrain themselves on the public consciousness. Newton with the falling apple, Einstein with E=mc2, and Schrödinger with the famous 'Schrödinger's cat' though experiment which explains quantum mechanics in a nutshell. Various Photographers]
N.p: N.p. 1944-1966. Housed in a paper folder and clamping black vinyl album case in very good condition.

[1944] s.d. Manoscritto a inchiostro nero.

J.E. Alden, "A press in paradise: the beginnings of printing in Micronesia", in: Papers of the Bibliographical Society of America, 38 (1944), pp. 269-283, item 14. A rudimentary one-page primer for the language of the Gilbert Islands in the South Pacific, printed in "a few copies" for the missionary Hiram Bingham junior (stationed on Apaiang Island), whose wife had prepared it, and produced by the printing office of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) at their mission on Ponape Island. It was intended as an aid to teach the natives the alphabet and take the first steps toward teaching them to read. The language, very close to that of the Caroline Islands where it was printed, is a member of the Austronesian family of languages, which includes Maori. The Gilbert Islands were often called "Kingsmill" in the 19th-century, hence the title "Kingsmill primer" in the manuscript note on the copy in the ABCFM collection at Harvard College Library, which continues: "printed at Ponape, Sept. 1858". With the upper right corner torn off, not approaching the printed letters or rules, a couple small marginal tears, 1 small hole in a blank area and a few small spots, but still in very good condition. An ephemeral teaching aid and one of the earliest examples of printing in Micronesia: an extraordinary survival.

World War II] : [Photography]
[ca. 1944-1945], [Burma]. 92 black and white silver print photographs. Loose. Uniform single weight bordered prints measuring approximately 5" x 4." Velox stamps to print versos. Lacking notation or identification (apart from text on a temporary signage in one print). Prints moderately curled and with some occasional corner and edge creasing. A few prints with residue of a likely previous mounting in a black paper album. Overall group about good-plus. An uncommonly well executed photographic archive capturing logging and sawmill activities of an unnamed U.S. Army Engineers Forestry Unit appearing to support construction of the Ledo Road (a.k.a. The Stillwell Road) through Burma, likely in about 1944 or 1945. Forestry was an integral contribution to the immense undertaking, one of the most ambitious and heralded engineering projects of the War, though we've found little in the way of literature or research on the subject, save for a detailed glimpse into Ledo Road construction located in a January , 1945 issue of The Journal of the American Welding Society, one which identifies operations of striking similarity to those captured here: "Then there's a sawmill unit up the Road, lumbere of any kind except bamboo bashas being a serious prolem here in the jungle. [.] This lumber unit is made up of trained woodsmen from Washington and Oregon. Their Sergeant [.] operated his own lumber mill and has come up with some good time saving ideas for handling teak logs and other jungle timber." (pp.92) [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Bushmiller, Ernie (artist); Ed Dodd (cartoonist)
N.p.: N.p., 1944. Original four-panel artwork by Ernie Bushmiller, dated August 31, 1944, from his seminal comic strip Nancy, INSCRIBED to fellow cartoonist Ed Dodd in holograph ink: "To my friend - Ed Dodd / with best wishes / Ernie Bushmiller." This particular strip features Nancy, Sluggo and an un-named, non-recurring character, a buck-toothed girl speaking circa 1944Beatnik jive. A tremendous association between two of the most beloved and prolific comic strip artists of the twentieth century. As with American cinema, it was the French who first championed the studied simplicity of Bushmiller's un-deconstructible combination of rigid artistic style and even more rigidly governed humor. He goes on to say how he imagines Bushmiller at work, "carefully extracting every shred of irony from each frame." Edward Benton "Ed" Dodd, hailed from Lafayette, Georgia, and spent most of his life in Georgia. As a teen he went to work for Dan Beard, founder of the Boy Scouts of America. He continued to work for Beard at his camp in Pennsylvania for 13 summers. Beard tutored Dodd in writing and illustration and it was here Dodd developed his enthusiasm for co … [Click Below for Full Description]
