Sauk City, Arkham House, 1944. First Edition. First Impression. Association copy with manuscript material. Signature of Margery Lawrence to the front free endpaper. The manuscript material from Wandrei consists of five single-sided typed sheets comprising the introduction to the book, one single-sided typed sheet comprising the copyright page, one single-sided typed sheet comprising an early draft of the copyright page and a typed sheet outlining the pages needing correction. Numerous minor corrections in pencil by Wandrei. Margery Lawrence was also published by Arkham House (Mycroft & Moran) with the book 'Number Seven Queer Street' in 1959, it was first published in the UK by Hale in 1945. Given that this is one of the earlier Arkham's it does seem a nice association as it would've been one of the books from a publisher who would publish her work some fifteen years later. The dust jacket artwork is by the author's brother. The book itself is in very good condition with some bumping to the spine tips and a little rubbing to the lettering on the spine. The jacket has been reinforced internally with brown tape, and has a little wear, though not too bad given the age. The manuscript material is all in decent shape, with a little toning and a few short tears. Cover art by Howard Wandrei [5973, Hyraxia Books].All items will be packed in bubble-wrap and either a cardboard book-wrap or a box where appropriate. Items over £200 will be shipped fully tracked, insured and will require a signature. If you'd like this service on cheaper items please utilise the expedited shipping. 1944. Condition: Very Good. Very Good. You can see the blue covers in the photos. They have toning at their margins and significant color fading at the spine. While the gilt lettering on the spine can be made out with an effort it certainly doesn't stand out against the lightened color of the spine. There isn't much other wear on the covers. The edges and corners are in very good shape. The spine ends have just a little bit of crinkling. There are tiny creases above the front and rear bottom corners. Neither one has any impact on any of the pages. The book is square and very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. There is one instance of a thin space between two facing pages, just off the bottom edge and going up only about an inch along the juncture. Both facing pages are very solidly and tightly bound. United States Army Air Forces; Foreword by H. H. (Hap) Arnold
Simon & Schuster, New York, 1944. To find a book signed by General H.H. Arnold is a very rare thing, with the emphasis on 'very'. Once listed, this will be the Only signed copy of this title for sale anywhere on the Internet. And it isn't inscribed to a fellow named Smith or Jones. It's inscribed to the former Assistant Secretary of War and later High Commissioner to Postwar Germany, John J. McCloy. The inscription can be seen on the illustrated first end paper. It reads 'To Hon. John J. McCloy, The A.A.F appreciate your aid in helping us grow, H.H. Arnold.' Under the signature is a word a little difficulty to decipher, may be 'command'. Take a look. 'Henry Harley "Hap" Arnold was an American general officer holding the grades of General of the Army and later General of the U.S. Army Air Forces (he remains the only person to have ever held that rank). Arnold, was an aviation pioneer, Chief of the Air Corps (1938-1941), Commanding General of the U.S. Army Air Forces, the only U.S. Air Force general to hold five-star rank, and the only officer to hold a five-star rank in two different U.S. military services. Arnold was also the founder of Project RAND, which evolved into one of the world's largest non-profit global policy think tanks, the RAND Corporation, and one of the founders of Pan American World Airways. Instructed in flying by the Wright Brothers, Arnold was one of the first military pilots worldwide, and one of the first three rated pilots in the history of the United States Air Force. Fox, Wallace (director); George Bricker (screenwriter); Dwight V. Babcock (story writer); Lon Chaney, Jr., Brenda Joyce, J. Edward Bromberg, Clara Blandick (starring)
Universal City, CA: Universal Pictures, 1944. Draft script for the 1945 film. "To Central Files" in holograph pencil on the front wrapper, and a credit for screenwriter Bricker. The sixth and final Inner Sanctum installment, featuring spiritualists, a haunted house, and a murder by suffocation, in what was seemingly a last gasp from the studio's film series. Sadly, the film's failure superseded its potential, even with all the right elements of a chilling melodrama. Chaney ,Jr. plays attorney Wayne Fletcher, who is engaged in an affair with his secretary, Donna (Joyce), who is tied to a rich family. He arrives home after a late night at the office to discover his wife has been murdered, a death by asphyxiation, with Wayne as the suspect. With the help psychic Julian Julian (Bromberg), the police investigate the murder. The psychic's motives are questionable, but he says he can contact Wayne's dead wife. At a seance to reach Vivian's spirit, the reluctant Wayne hears what he thinks is her voice but discovers Julian Julian in the shadows and accuses him of conspiracy. After several sleepless nights haunted by the voice of his lost wife, Wayne finally "gives in" to her spirit and attempts to kill Donna with a pillow, but is overpowered by police and leaps from a window to his death, per his wife's instructions. Gray card titled wrappers, rubber-stamped production No. 7285, dated November 20 1944, with a credit for screenwriter Bricker. Title page present, dated November 20 1944, with a credit for screenwriter Bricker. 109 leaves, carbon typescript on onionskin stock. P … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gardiner, Reginald
Manitoba, Canada, 1944. 14¾" x 11¾". Full leather album, internally string tied. 100 pages, the first 27 with 70 black and white photos and five items of ephemera adhesive mounted; the rest are blank. An additional 55 photos and two items of ephemera laid in. Most photos measure 4" x 5". Photos in album are captioned, others are not. Album externally good: lacking the back strip and with significant edge wear and losses at corners; internally near fine or better. Reggie Gardiner was a well known comedic stage actor and mimic in England before hitting Broadway and ultimately tackling Hollywood. His first Hollywood movie was in 1936 and he appeared in over 100 films as, according to an obituary, "the amiable ass. " He was best known for his role in Chaplin's The Great Dictator and a news clipping in the album suggests he was more well known as a socialite, for a time acting as Hedy Lamarr's favorite escort. This album documents Gardiner's time as a headliner in the Kay Francis Show, which toured central and western Canada and Alaska for several weeks in February 1944, entertaining troops at around 50 American, as well as Canadian, camps. Many of these were in remote Arctic areas whose locations were kept secret and some of the men had not seen women for months. One of Gardiner's captions reads, "the picture on the opposite page is typical of the outposts we saw-as for instance Eskimo Point which juts out into the Hudson Bay simply miles and miles and miles from anywhere. " News reports stated that the events at Canadian military outposts were the first U. S. O. … [Click Below for Full Description]
