All right what about Kamrowski? -- Or Lee Bell? Or Jackson Pollock? -- Or Arthur Sturcke?" .

        The Way Some People Live

Random House, New York 1943 - First edition. Fine in very near fine dustwrapper with a very small nick near the base of the spine and a faint spot on the spine, but an especially bright and fine example. Signed by the author and dated in 1976. Cheever's uncommon first book, a collection of short fiction that he never allowed to be reprinted. Only three of the stories have ever been subsequently printed, in an obscure paperback published in the 1960s. Consequently Cheever was loathe to sign copies, and this is one of only a very few thus. Combined with the especially nice condition, this may be the best copy we've seen. See this book in 3D on our site. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Picasso. Seize Peintures 1939-1943. Introduction de Robert Desnos.

Les Éditions du Chêne., Paris. 1943 - A poor copy of this rare folio. 14/16 plates. Covers detached, title page detached and torn. Boldly signed by Picasso on the title-page in blue ink. From the collection of Phillip James, provenance Marcus Campbell Art Books. Mr Philip James, CBE, who died on Monday 1st may 1974, at the age of 72, was Librarian of the Royal Academy from 1969. Earlier he had a long association with the Arts Council and its predecessor, CEMA, as art director. He joined CEMA in1941as Deputy Secretary and a year later became director of art. For 17 years he worked with diligence and devotion to reveal and interpret painting and sculpture to a new and some times puzzled audience. He was closely involved in the selection and promotion of the many exhibitions which the Arts Council presents each year and credit must go to him for the part he played in winning greater acceptance and tolerance of experiment in art from the general public. His regard for tradition was as notable as his sympathy for innovation and the roll call of Art Council exhibitions presented during his time with that body is in itself a tribute to the breadth of his interests. Philip Brutton James, the son of the Rev John C James, was born on October 31, 1901 and educated at Sherborne and University College London. He became Sub-Librarian of the Middle Temple in 1923 and two years later joined the staff of the Victoria and Albert Museum Library of which he was appointed Keeper in 1936. From 1939 to 1941 he was with the Ministry of Home Security. After leaving the Arts Council in 1958 he became Director of Waddesdon Manor, Buckinghamshire which had been bequeathed to the National Trust by Mr James de Rothschild. He resigned the appointment after a year and then spent four years as Secretary and Editor of the Museums' Association. He was the author of 'Early Keyboard Instruments', 'Children's Book of Yesterday', 'English Book Illustration 1800-1900' and books on Van Gogh and Henry Moore. He married in 1926 Bertha daughter of Canon V L Whitechurch. They had one son and one daughter. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

They had to be aged between 25 and 30 years old, belong to either the Nazi Party, the Hitler Youth, SA or SS. The schools themselves were typically stark, modern structures with basic utilities and ample room for the young men training to go to war. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        West with the Night

Harrap, London 1943 - 1st impression produced in conformity with war economy standards. Publisher's original turquoise cloth with gilt titles to spine still reasonably fresh but with a hint of soiling to edges and limited bumping/rubbing to spine ends and other extremities. Page block edges foxed. Internally minor and only occasional foxing with one neat ownership signature and date to top of front pastedown. Unpriceclipped dustjacket still almost all present except for a few chips to spine ends and fold ends with edge creasing and occasional short [less than .5 cms] closed tear - discernable but light coffee cup ring stain to front panel and another slightly heavier one to rear panel with some soiling but the overal effect is not bad. A scarce book in jacket. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Heads and Tales [Snake or Reptile Skin Binding].

Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1936. Signed presentation copy to the creator of this binding (Helen Wormser) in 1943. - 6 3/4 x 9 1/2", 416pp., numerous black & white photo illustrations (those of the bronzes & marbles by Peter Juley & De Witt Ward). Signed presentation copy with ink inscription on half title: "To Helen Wormser With appreciation for this beautiful binding, and with best wishes to a fellow artist Malvina Hoffman 1943" & small bird & crescent moon sketch under signature. Bound in full wide grain white & gray snake ("Asian python"?) or other unidentified lizard or reptile skin with whitish underbelly at outer fore edges of covers. Two raised bands 1 1/4" from top & bottom of spine & inlaid title in black leather running in simple stepped pattern down spine: Heads and Tales & a larger inlaid block lettered title in dark green/black leather on front cover & inlaid author's name at bottom of front cover. 3/4" turn-ins on inner covers framing a dark green/black morocco leather panel (this has left a tan rectangular mark on gray endpapers). All edges gilt; preserved in a fleece lined, gray cloth covered slipcase (shows minor rubbing to corners) Original endpaper featuring the "Unity of Mankind 5' needlepoint tapestry map in color by Ginevra King, showing the world tour for the Field Museum and presented to Miss Hoffman on her return." bound in at end. Book is in fine condition. Chronicles Malvina Hoffman's travels undertaken for the Field Museum (Hall of Man) 1931-32. This is a one of a kind copy, first bound by Helen Wormser & given to Hoffman (by the Field Museum? or Wormser?) the snake/reptile skin could have been purchased by Hoffman while on her Asian travels. The book was later (1943) given by Hoffman to the binder (Wormser) with the signed presentation inscription quoted above. Quite an intriguing story here, but these are as many pieced together (& guessed) details as we have. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Collection of autograph letters, signed, to Paiva Couceiro's close friend Saturio Pires; written while Paiva Couceiro was in exile in Spain, and covering matters personal and political. On paper, in Portuguese.

, , 1925-1943. - Written in ink, in a cramped but legible script. 9 autograph letters signed (98 pages), 17 autograph postcards signed, 1 calling card and 1 picture postcard with Paiva Couceiro's portrait. Most about 17.5 x 12.8 cm., in a plastic sleeve. Some holes punched in sides, without significant loss; otherwise fine. ---- Collection of autograph letters, signed, to Paiva Couceiro's close friend Saturio Pires, written while Paiva Couceiro was in exile in Spain. The earliest is dated January 6, 1925, the latest January 7, 1943. The letters are nearly all substantive, and include discussions of such matters as the famous letter Paiva Couceiro wrote to Mario Pessoa regarding a possible invasion of Angola (August 4, 1935), and a discussion of the Causa Monarchica, the Portuguese press and his own role as a leader of the Monarchist movement (August 15, 1930). There are also more personal letters, such as one of April 9, 1926, lamenting that the gas in his apartment had been cut off because he could not afford to pay the bill, and railing against those who call themselves Monarchists but will not help support him.Paiva Couceiro (1861-1944) became a prominent public figure in the 1890s, when his heroism helped keep Lourenço Marques from being captured. From 1907 to 1909 he was Governor of Angola. When the Republic was declared in 1910 he supported the King, and in 1911 handed in his resignation from the army with the famous line, "Revoltou-me contra a República para salvar Portugal!" He spent the remaining years of his life (mostly in self-imposed exile in Spain) working to restore the monarchy.---- On Paiva Couceiro, see @Grande enciclopédia XX, 21-23; also Manso Preto Cruz, @A Biografia política e o in-memoriam de Henrique de Paiva Couceiro (Lisbon, 1946), and Rocha Martins, @A Monarquia do Norte (Lisbon, 1922). E' assai utile e doveroso elencare i protagonisti : Anceschi L. Banfi A. Benedetti A. Bignardi A. Carlo Bo,Brocca C. Budigna L., Buzzati Dino, Celaniu M., Cresti R., De Unamuno Oreste Del Buono, E.
