        Two snapshot photograph albums compiled by a RAF officer.

      Syria/Lebanon: , 1942?43. 2 volumes, landscape quarto (259 x 337 mm). Contemporary black heavily embossed soft leather, covers blind stamped overall with Egyptian iconographic panels (central panel of a view of pyramids), black cord ties. Over 350 original small format photographs (generally ranging in size between 90 x 60 and 63 x 42 mm), corner-mounted on both sides of heavy stock grey-brown card (with glassine guards), captioned throughout in white ink. Bindings a little rubbed, a few glassine guards a little creased but in excellent condition overall. A wide-ranging collection of very good quality photographs - well-maintained and extensively captioned - taken by an RAF officer serving in Syria, Lebanon and Iraq during 1942-43, smartly presented in two locally purchased albums. The brief - and recently concluded - Syria-Lebanon Campaign of June-July 1941, also known as Operation Exporter, saw British, Australian, Indian and Free French forces drive the Vichy French out of that region. A contemporary account in Time magazine (23 June 1941) described the operation's opening in memorable terms: "The first eight days of the British-Free French drive for Vichy-held Syria were a weird combination of Blitz and bicker, glad-handing and heavy punching, pushover and furious resistance. Australian bayonets were sheathed; Royal Navy guns blasted. Opposing Frenchmen kissed or killed each other". The first album is the more extensive of the two, containing 218 images, and opens with a Christian Lebanese wedding at Bsmara, local scenes and views of the officers' mess there; Beit-Méry and Baalbek; several pages given over to Aleppo (the Citadel, the Halawi mosque, carpet manufacture); Nerab; Damascus (including the Tekkiye and Omayyyid mosques); Markab (views of the camp, "boating on Lake Habbaniya", football teams, the canteen at Christmas 1942, several scenes from the unit show); concluding with Habbaniya, an important RAF base in Iraq, Khadimain and Baghdad. The 148 photographs of the second album very much focus on tourist locations in South Africa, Cairo, Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Jericho, Nazareth, Haifa, Sidon, returning to Lebanon with scenes at Beirut and Tripoli. As no aircraft are pictured in either of the albums, we believe that the unidentified RAF officer may well have served in an intelligence-gathering capacity, possibly serving with a Wireless Unit at a number of Y-stations in the Middle East. Y-stations were RAF signals intelligence collection sites and No. 6 was located at Nerab near Aleppo (of which there are a number of scenes in the first album). "By now (i.e. late 1943) there were Y-stations all across the Mediterranean theatre, from Algiers in the west, to Aleppo in Syria, taking in Tunisia, Malta, Sicily, Calabria, Benghazi, Cairo and Alexandria on the way" (Jackson & Haysom, Covert Radar and Signals Interception, 2014). A very engaging glimpse of life behind the lines in Lebanon, Syria and Iraq and of one British officer's obvious fascination with the life, culture and history of the Middle East.

        First Papers of Surrealism.

      New York: Coordinating Council of French Relief Societies, Inc.,, 1942. Small quarto. Original stapled yellow pictorial perforated wrappers, green endpapers. Slight surface ribbing down spine and to corners, but an exceptional copy. First edition, MOMA Director Monroe Wheeler's copy, of this exhibition catalogue of the First Papers of Surrealism exhibition, with the bullet-hole wrappers designed by Duchamp. This copy has the ink ownership inscription of MOMA Director Monroe Wheeler dated October 1942, in the month that the exhibition opened. Wheeler was Director of Exhibitions and Publications at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and almost certainly would have been in attendance at the exhibition's opening. Indeed, the museum is thanked for the loan of some exhibits. The exhibition was organised by André Breton and "his twine" Marcel Duchamp; it was held in New York between 14 October and 7 November 1942. It included paintings and sculptures by more than 30 artists, and featured Duchamp's famous "mile of string" installation, festooning the venue, the Whitelaw Reid Mansion, with a tangled web of twine. The title of the exhibition derived from the application for American citizenship - immigrants had to file a declaration of intention, also called first papers, in which they renounced allegiance to foreign governments; many surrealists like André Breton, Marcel Duchamp and Max Ernst had fled Europe with the outbreak of World War II.

The text and images are fiercly antisemitic and try to establish the supposedly evil influence of Jews. The cover shows a knight with the Ustasa symbol fighting a snake that is covered with the star of David. Illustrations in the text (Croatian throughout) are very much in the style of the German magazine "Der Stuermer".       Warner Brothers 1942 - Vintage original 8 x 10" (20 x 25 cm.) black-and-white single weight glossy silver gelatin print still photo, USA. The all-time Hollywood classic, the studio system producing at its best! It would win the Academy Award for Best Picture of 1943, though officially released and copyrighted in 1942; it qualified for the following year's awards as it did not have a Los Angeles screening until Jan. 1943. Here is a climactic scene as Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid) and Ilsa Lund (Ingrid Bergman) are about to leave Casablanca with the letter of transit secured by Rick (Humphrey Bogart). Still is coded "c-77". The original informational attached paper blurb is on the verso. There is a one-inch (2.5 cm.) tear at the mid left border which has been repaired with archival tape on the verso. Minor creasing at the corners, more at the bottom left corner NEAR FINE

The Famous Five's first adventure featuring a ruined castle, a wreck and buried treasure. Spine and corners bumped and a little worn. Browning to top and bottom of spine. A few light marks to boards. Inscription in ink to front endpaper. A little surface paper damage and small mark to front endpaper. Some foxing and a few marks otherwise contents are generally clean. Dustwrapper is edge worn with some tears and creases and some areas of loss which has been cleverly disguised with photocopy beneath (not attached to the wrapper). The Jews were required to wear a yellow patch and provide for the needs of the German army. Many Jews were shot to death in their homes or during the Death Marches. About 4, 000 Jews were sent to concentration camps in Tunisia and few were sent to extermination camps in Europe. See EJ, Vol. XV, cols. 1447-8. Judeo-Arabic dirges.         Flight to Arras

      Reynal & Hitchcock, New York 1942 - 255 Pages. This limited edition No. 233 of 500 is signed by Antoine de Saint-Exupery (1900-1944) and Bernard Lamotte on the limitation page. Boards are clean with pointed corners. It has a dark blue quarter-spine that shows some wear, particularly at the bottom spine area. Top page edges are gold. Interior text pages are flawless. Slipcase is missing the bottom and the right sides. In addition to being a noted aviator he was a respected author. This is the author's memoir that tells of his time in the French Air Force flying reconnaissance missions during the Battle of France in 1940. He was an older pilot with more than 20 years flying experience at the time. This book condenses months of flights into a single terrifying mission over the town of Arras of France in May 1940 in which seventeen of his fellow crews were sacrificed recklessly, he writes, like glasses of water thrown onto a forest fire. Saint-Exupéry survived the French defeat but refused to join the Royal Air Force over political differences with de Gaulle and in late 1940 went to New York where he accepted the National Book Award for his Wind, Sand and Stars. He remained in North America for two years, and then in the spring of 1943 rejoined his old unit in North Africa. In July 1944 he failed to return from a reconnaissance mission over France. There was much speculation about his disappearance until 2000 when a scuba diver exploring the Mediterranean discovered wreckage that was raised and identified as the author's plane. His previous books were The Aviator (1926), Southern Mail (1929 Novel), Night Flight (1931) (1933 Film John Barrymore, Helen Hayes, and Clark Gable), Wind, Sand and Stars (1939).       Sauk City: Arkham House. Sauk City, Arkham House, 1942. First Edition. First Impression. One of Smith's scarcer Arkham titles. One of 1,054 copies. A great Hannes Bok jacket. The book has an owner's inscription to the endpaper, a couple of note cards and a postcard from Arkham announcing the book. The owner was Samuel D. Russell, an active SF fan who was a writer and editor in his own right. The cards have some charming notes about ideas for writing. Russell apparently was an undercover FBI agent. Very good with wear to all jacket corners and spine tips, a couple of tears (~10mm), some reinforcement to the jacket interior with a label. Vertical crease to jacket spine. A decent copy.         Lettera autografa firmata indirizzata a ''Mio caro Vigna'', S.l. e S.d. (ma 1942)

      1942. 1 pagina in-4 (mm 290x225), vergata in chiara grafia e firmata "Ungaretti", relativa al fascino che il mito di Stendhal dovette esercitare anche su Ungaretti. Il poeta scrive a un non meglio identificato amico Vigna (''Mio Caro Vigna'') per annunciargli una sua prossima visita a Civitavecchia, insieme ad un musicologo francese di nome Banzi: ''..sabato, o venerdì della settimana ventura, io e il mio amico Banzi, un musicologo e uno scrittore francese.. si verrebbe a Civitavecchia''. Domanda al corrispondente di fissare un appuntamento con Bucci, da identificare con Clodoveo Bucci, per poter visionare alcuni manoscritti e volumi appartenuti a Sthendal, attualmente conservati presso il Comune di Milano nel fondo Stendhaliano Bucci (''..se ti è possibile preparare per quel giorno l'incontro con Bucci, col quale si potrebbe parlare di Sthendal, scrivimi''). Il primo custode di questa importante raccolta dei libri appartenuti a Sthendal e rinvenuti nel 1842, anno della morte del celebre scrittore francese, è stato Donato Bucci (1798-1870), suo fedele amico e poi suo esecutore testamentario per i beni lasciati in Italia. Morto Donato è appunto il nipote Clodoveo (1855-1942) che continua a conservare i volumi e gli altri cimeli stendhaliani. Con il cambio di secolo inizia a fiorire intorno ai documenti rimasti in Italia un'attenzione non più dettata solo dalla semplice curiosità di vedere la biblioteca del console scrittore, ma rivolta ad indagare gli autografi contenuti nei libri mentre Stendhal si avvia ad essere uno scrittore di culto. Clodoveo Bucci è disponibile possessore della raccolta; con lui gli stendhaliani si relazionano per avere accesso ai volumi e Casa Bucci diventa sia una meta privilegiata degli studiosi: hanno lasciato traccia del loro passaggio tra gli altri appunto Ungaretti (come questa importante lettera sembra confermare), Gian Pietro Lucini, Margherita Sarfatti e Alberto Savinio. La Raccolta venne venduta nel 1942 dagli eredi di Clodoveo a Federico Gentile, figlio del senatore Giovanni Gentile. La visita di Ungaretti è quindi da collocare proprio nel ?42, anno in cui il poeta rientrò in Italia dopo il lungo soggiorno a San Paolo del Brasile. Curioso anche il fatto che la lettera venne spedita ad un destinatario erroneo come si legge in calce da mano dello stesso Ungaretti: ''Ecco la lettera che era stata mandata per errore a Maroni. Rispondi Telegraficamente''.In perfetto stato (piccola mancanza nel margine inferiore, ininfluente).

      Muhammad Ali (* 17. Januar 1942 in Louisville, Kentucky als Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr.) ist ein ehemaliger US-amerikanischer Boxer. Er gehört zu den bedeutendsten Schwergewichtsboxern und herausragendsten Athleten des 20. Jahrhunderts und wurde 1999 vom Internationalen Olympischen Komitee zum Sportler des Jahrhunderts gewählt.[1]Auch außerhalb des Boxrings sorgte Ali für Schlagzeilen. So lehnte er öffentlich den Vietnamkrieg ab, verweigerte den Wehrdienst und unterstützte die Emanzipationsbewegung der Afroamerikaner in den 1960er Jahren. Viele Journalisten mochten Clays selbstsichere Art nicht und prophezeiten ihm eine Niederlage gegen Liston, so auch Arthur Daley von der New York Times: The irritatingly confident Cassius enters this bout with one trifling handicap. He cant fight as well as he can talk. (Der irritierend selbstbewusste Cassius bestreitet diesen Titelkampf mit einem unbedeutenden Nachteil. Er kann nicht so gut kämpfen, wie er reden kann.).[3]Trotzdem gewann der mit Sieben zu Eins als Außenseiter gesetzte Clay durch eine angeblich verletzungsbedingte Aufgabe seines Gegners nach der sechsten Runde. In tumultartigen Szenen brüllte Clay nach dem Sieg immer wieder I shook up the world! und I am the greatest! in die Mikrofone. Die Bilder von ihm mit weit aufgerissenem Mund und Augen gingen um die Welt.Im weiteren Verlauf des Jahres machte Clay seine Mitgliedschaft in der Nation of Islam öffentlich und wählte Muhammad Ali als Namen. 1975 konvertierte er zum sunnitischen Islam.[4] Der Rückkampf gegen ListonIm Rückkampf am 25. Mai 1965 in Lewiston, Maine, wurde Liston von Ali bereits in der 1. Runde nach nur 105 Sekunden Kampf vom so genannten Phantomschlag (Phantom Punch, auch als Anchor Punch bekannt geworden) niedergestreckt, einem kurzen, harten, rechten Cross an Schläfe oder Kiefer,[5] der weder von Liston noch von großen Teilen des Publikums gesehen worden war. Ali schrie daraufhin den am Boden liegenden Liston mit den Worten Get up, you bum! (Komm hoch, du Penner!) wutentbrannt an und der Ringrichter, der ehemalige Weltmeister Jersey Joe Walcott, der mit der Situation offensichtlich überfordert war, zählte zunächst weder an noch aus, da er den wütend bei Liston stehenden und schreienden Ali von diesem wegzudrängen suchte. Der Kampf wurde dann zunächst wieder freigegeben, unmittelbar darauf jedoch beendet, als Nat Fleischer, der Gründer des Ring Magazines, Walcott darauf hinwies, dass Liston schon deutlich mehr als 10 Sekunden am Boden gewesen war.Der nur von wenigen Zuschauern gesehene Phantom Punch gab im Verbund mit Listons scheinbarer Unbesiegbarkeit und dessen dubiosen Kontakten zur Mafia Anlass zu Spekulationen über einen möglichen Betrug, was andererseits wegen der offensichtlichen Feindschaft zwischen den beiden Boxern bezweifelt wurde. So hatte Liston vor dem ersten Kampf, auf die Provokationen Clays angesprochen, erklärt, dass er die Absicht habe, Clay umzubringen. Meine Geschichte. S. 123.Film- und Fotoaufnahmen bewiesen im Nachhinein eindeutig, dass Liston von Ali tatsächlich getroffen wurde. Unklar blieb allerdings, wie hart. Deutlich zu sehen ist die entspannte Muskulatur von Listons Körper während des Sturzes, die eine Bewusstlosigkeit zu diesem Zeitpunkt vermuten lässt. Seine Beine waren jedoch so schnell und die Hüfte so beweglich, dass er fast jeden Schlag auspendeln konnte. Tatsächlich bekam er kaum Treffer an den Kopf, kokettierte mit seinem Aussehen und prahlte, dass er nach vielen Kämpfen immer noch so hübsch wie ein Mädchen sei. Pound & Lucini's Italian translations of the poems of Confucius appear for the first time in this fragile production, printed in Rapallo early in 1942 in an edition of unknown number. In a letter to Mrs Virgil Jordan on 3 November 1941, Pound commented on the translation, "I am making a real translation of Confucius' Ta S'eu (wrongly spelled Ta Hio, by the frogs whom I followed in earlier edtns ... Have just finished the Italian draft and a blooke, called Luchini, is supposed to put it into real Italian." The Italian translation was printed separately, without the original Chinese text as here, in Testamento di Confucio, 1944. Pound had drafted an earlier English version, though again printed without the Chinese text in Ta Hio, The Great Learning (1928). Inscribed copies are rare; we can find no other copy recorded at auction, and have never handled another.

        Typed Letter Signed on behalf of George Cukor, 4to on personal printed stationery, n.p., January 16, 1943

      1942. Tracy writes a letter of recommendation for his friend and film director, George Cukor. The actor recommends the director to make war propaganda films. In 1942, Cukor enlisted in the Army Signal Corps. Cukor was 43 at that time which might the reason for Tracy writing to Colonel Melvin Gillette, of the Signal Corps Photographic Center. Cukor directed training and propaganda films for a year after which he honorably discharged because of his age. Tracy and Cukor had worked together on a number of films before and after World War II. Tracy lists some of Cukor's films as a way of showing Cukor's accomplishments. He describes Cukor as, "a man of great intellectual and artistic experience, has a great sense of humor and an enormously quick mind, which seems to me to add materially to his potentialities as an officer. He is a very well educated man...has boundless energy...." Tracy notes in his final paragraph that Cukor understands "human nature." He signs above his typed name, "Spencer Tracy."

      The Association for Symbolic Logic, 1942. First edition, the very rare offprint issues, and with a fine provenance, of Turing's papers on Church's type theory. "Church's type theory is a formal logical language which includes first-order logic, but is more expressive in a practical sense. It is used, with some modifications and enhancements, in most modern applications of type theory. It is particularly well suited to the formalization of mathematics and other disciplines and to specifying and verifying hardware and software" (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy). Offprints of Turing's papers are extremely rare in institutional holdings, and even more so in commerce. Copies of both offprints are in the Turing Archive at King's College, Cambridge, and also among those collected by Max Newman (now at Bletchley Park). We are not aware of any other copies having appeared in commerce. Turing's interest in logic and computation began when he attended the lectures of Max Newman at Cambridge in 1935. This led, two years later, to the publication of his great work On computable numbers, with an application to the Entscheidungsproblem, which included the introduction of the 'universal Turing machine.' Turing spent the years1937-1939 at Princeton, where he completed his PhD under the supervision of Alonzo Church. From the latter part of 1939, Turing was engaged in war work at Bletchley Park. 'Before the war my work was in logic and my hobby was cryptanalysis,' he once said, 'and now it is the other way round.' He had to thank Newman for stimulating his thoughts on this 'hobby' of mathematical logic, for they corresponded in 1940 and 1941, in which latter year Newman again gave Cambridge lectures on Foundations of Mathematics. "Most of Alan's efforts were directed towards a new formulation of the theory of types. Russell had regarded types as rather a nuisance, adopted faute de mieux in order to save Frege's set theory. Other logicians had felt that a hierarchy of logical categories was really quite a natural idea, and that it was the attempt to lump together every conceivable entity into 'sets' that was strange. Alan inclined to the latter view. He would prefer a theory with the way in which mathematicians actually thought, and which worked in a practical way. He also wanted to see mathematical logic used to make the work of mathematicians more rigorous... His own efforts to bridge the gap began with an attempt 'to put the theory of type into a form in which it can be used by the mathematician-in-the-street without having to study mathematical logic, much less use it... The type principle is effectively taken care of in ordinary language by the fact that there are nouns as well as adjectives. We can make the statement 'All horses are four-legged', which can be verified by examination of every horse, at any rate if there are only a finite number of them. If however we try to use words like 'thing' or 'thing whatever' trouble begins. Suppose we understand 'thing' to include everything whatever, books, cats, men, women, thoughts, functions of men with cats as values, numbers, matrices, classes of classes, procedures, propositions... Under these circumstances what can be made of the statement 'All things are not prime multiples of 6'... What do we mean by it? Under no circumstances is the number of things to be examined finite. It may be that some meaning can be given to statements of this kind, but for the present we do not know of any. In effect then the theory of types requires us to refrain from the use of such nouns as 'thing', 'object', etc., which are intended to convey the idea of 'anything whatever'. "The technical work of separating mathematical 'nouns' from 'adjectives' was based upon that of Church, whose lectures he had followed at Princeton, and who published a description of his type theory in 1940. Part of Alan's work was done in collaboration with Newman through correspondence; their joint paper [i.e. I] being received at Princeton on 9 May 1941. It must have crossed the Atlantic just as the München was captured. Alan produced a further paper of a highly technical nature, The use of dots as brackets in Church's system, and submitted it just a year later" (Hodges, pp. 215-6). In this case, Turing essentially studies an important aspect of programming languages, a syntax for trees... In short, Turing's dots gave him a way to think about the order of operations in a structure that was more intuitive to him, to prepare him for planned further work on Church's ?-calculus" (Lance Fortnow, in Alan Turing: his work and impact, pp. 227-8). Turing states that he intended to make use of this notation in two forthcoming papers, Some theorems about Church's systems and The theory of virtual types. These never appeared, although manuscripts with similar titles exist in the Turing Archive (AMT/C/3-6). Although there are no ownership marks, these offprints are from the working library of Robin Gandy. "[Gandy's] interest in [mathematical logic] commenced through his wartime acquaintance with Alan Turing as far back as 1944. His twin interests in the foundations of science and mathematics were fostered by Turing. These interests moulded a career which always seemed larger than his publication list, although that grew in diversity with the years to include some seminal papers. Initially, he read widely and published little, but around 1960 he started to produce the major results which made him an international figure in the theory of abstract recursion and in effective, descriptive set theory. There were also major conceptual innovations such as the theory of inductive definitions, and a plethora of ingenious intricate proofs in different corners of the subject. He wrote papers on many areas of logic and was much in demand as a reviewer of books on the foundations of mathematics and science. He remained active and productive and was a familiar figure at international conferences until his sad and unexpected death (from an aortic rupture) on November 20th, 1995. "He was born on September 22nd, 1919, in Peppard, Oxfordshire, where his father, Thomas Gandy, was in general practice. His mother Ida Gandy earned a reputation for a sequence of books based on her early life in Wiltshire. Educated at Abbotsholme, a progressive public school, he went on to join that special elite at King's College, Cambridge, intellectual home of such famous names as E. M. Forster the novelist, J. Maynard Keynes the economist - and Alan Turing. He met Turing at a party in 1940 (Gandy's graduation year) but their early wartime careers were separate. Gandy was commissioned in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers and became an expert on military radio and radar, whilst Turing joined the cryptanalysts at Bletchley Park. They were brought together at Hanslope Park in 1944 to work on a speech decipherment system, christened 'Delilah' at Gandy's suggestion because it was intended to be a 'deceiver of men'. "Their friendship continued after the war, back at King's College where Turing had resumed his fellowship. Gandy took Part III of the Mathematical Tripos with distinction, then began studying for a PhD under Turing's supervision; his successful thesis on the logical foundation of physics (On axiomatic systems in mathematics and theories in physics) was presented in 1953 and can now be seen as a bridge between his wartime expertise and later career. When Turing died in 1954 he left his mathematical books and papers to Gandy, who, in 1963, took over from Max Newman the task of editing the papers for publication" (Moschovakis & Yates, pp. 367-8).         Der Berner Totentanz nach Niklaus Manuel. 10 Kostümentwürfe (mehrfarb. Aquarelle) und Textheft.

      28 x 20 cm, Der handschriftl. Untertitel etwas knapp beschnitten, sonst tadell. Die Entwürfe vom Zürcher Photographen Karl W. Rahm waren für eine Aufführung des Berner Totentanzes nach den Texten von N. Manuel (zusammengestellt v. Fridolin Hefti)gedacht. Leider ist über den Künstler nichts bekannt, ebensowenig war über eine Aufführung des Stückes zu finden. Die Aquarelle zeigen die 10 Personen des Stücks: Der Tod der arm Mann der Vogt die Tochter der Bruoder der Kriegsmann die Muoter de Kaiser der Arzet der Ansager. Beiliegen das Textheft (Kl.8, OBrosch., 27 S., Vlg. von Tschudi, Glarus, 1942) aus der Reihe Schweizer Volksspiel Heft 2.
