Cain, James M. (novel); Luchino Visconti (director)
Rome: A.P.E. Roma, 1943. Complete set of three vintage Italian posters for the legendary 1943 Italian film noir. Based on the 1929 novel by James M. Cain, "The Postman Always Rings Twice," and preceding the US film adaptation by three years. Visconti's trenchant first feature, an unauthorized adaptation of Cain's novel, often cited as the earliest neorealist film. Visconti himself saved a print of the film, the only reason it exists today, Mussolini having ordered the negative destroyed. The United States' reaction to the film wasn't much better, as Cain's publisher Alfred A. Knopf kept if off American screens until 1976. 27.5 x 19.5 inches. All three posters about Fine with modest restoration. On archival linen, rolled.

Chandler, Raymond (screenwriter); Frank Partos (screenwriter); Irving Pichel (director); Rachel Field (novel); Frank Partos (screenwriter); Alan Ladd, Loretta Young, Susan Hayward, Barry Sullivan (starring)
Hollywood: Paramount Pictures, 1943. Revised Draft script for the 1943 film. Co-written for the screen by Raymond Chandler and Frank Partos. Chandler's contribution to the script had mostly to do with Alan Ladd's character and his tough dialogue (elements sneered at by the media upon the film's release). Laid in is an 8-page shooting schedule on blue stock, a 6-page revision to sequence "A" on yellow onionskin stock, and 14 pages of "inter-office communication" on yellow studio stationery (comments on scenes, sequences, and pages of the script). Based on Rachel Field's 1942 novel, about Emily Blair (Loretta Young), a wealthy deaf girl whose hometown is named for her family. Doctor Vance (Ladd) , who grew up on the other side of town, resents the Blair family, but is working on a serum to cure deafness which he tries on Emily, and she is eventually cured. One of only five screenplays written by Chandler, this being the second, following his script for the classic "Double Indemnity" (1944), based on James M. Cain's novel. Chandler had a tumultuous career in Hollywood, including a suspension in late 1945 from Paramount for "refusing to perform under a contract which is not a proper expression of my standing in the motion picture business," but his influence on film adaptation is nearly unmatched, with scripts and stories that pushed the limits of the Production Code Administration. Script: White self wrappers, production No. SF 8577, dated December 3, 1943, with credits for screenwriters Partos and Chandler. Title page integral with front wrapper in the Paramount style. 137 le … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lewin, Albert (director, screenwriter); Oscar Wilde (novel); Pandro S. Berman (producer); Hurd Hatfield, Angela Lansbury, Lowell Gilmore, Donna Reed, George Sanders (starring)
Beverly Hills, CA: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer [MGM], 1943. Complete script for the 1945 film, along with 41 vintage still photographs. Based on the 1890 novel by Oscar Wilde. Script is equivalent to a nearly 3-hour version of the classic film, finally released at a length of 110 minutes. Photographs break down to 14 reference photographs, 22 test photographs (Hurd Hatfield, Angela Lansbury, and Lowell Gilmore), and 1 snapshot size test photograph (Angela Lansbury). A man has his portrait painted, and the portrait magically takes on the ability to absorb the sins of his debauched life while he remains unaged. The tale becomes a tragic warning against a selfish and unconsidered life, as Gray becomes increasingly paranoid that someone will discover the image of his true self. The painting of Dorian Gray was commissioned expressly for the film, by artist Ivan Le Lorraine Albright, and evolved during production. The piece is now at the Art Institute of Chicago. Winner of an Academy Award for Best Black-and-White Cinematography, and nominated for two others. Set in 19th century London. Goldenrod studio wrappers, noted as COMPLETE on the front wrapper, rubber-stamped copy No. 69 and production No. 5069, dated 11-5-43, with credits for screenwriter director Lewin and producer Berman. Title page integral with the first page of the text. 166 leaves, mimeograph duplication, with white and pink revision pages throughout, dated variously between 8/23/43 and 3/7/44. CHEEVER, John
Random House, New York, 1943. First edition. Fine in very near fine dustwrapper with a tiny nick near the base of the spine and a faint spot on the spine, but an especially bright and fine example. Signed by the author and dated in 1976. Cheever's uncommon first book, a collection of short fiction that he never allowed to be reprinted. Only three of the stories have ever been subsequently printed, in an obscure paperback published in the 1960s. Consequently Cheever was loathe to sign copies, and this is one of only a very few. Combined with the especially nice condition, this may be the best copy we've seen. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

Guthrie, Woody
E. P. Dutton, 1943. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. Book condition is Very Good; with a Very Good dust jacket. Edge wear to jacket, including a few chips. Two scuffs to paper at jacket rear panel. Minor foxing. Crease to bottom corner of a few pages. Text is clean and unmarked, frontispiece. First Edition is stated, first issue jacket present. An inscription as vibrant and humble as would be expected of Guthrie; written upside down, one can picture the book being handed to Guthrie and him signing before rotating the book. Guthrie tells the recipient, Marshall, "I hope you find some real 'fight' in this book..." Inscription is dated to April 1943, a few weeks after the book's publication. It would be difficult to underestimate Guthrie's influence on American folk music and as well as American popular music. As academic arguments persist about the great American novel, Guthrie's musical work and this book itself are distinctly American in attitude, imagery and fortitude--perpetuating and exemplifying the great American narrative that electrifies the significance of individual perspective, while in Guthrie's case also espousing his great compassion for the vulnerable and oppressed. ; Signed and inscribed by the author, Woody Guthrie, on the front end page. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; Signed by Author. Saint-Exupery, Antoine de
New York: Reynal & Hitchcock, 1943. First edition. Near Fine/Very Good +. First printing in English. Near Fine book in VG+ jacket. Book with a touch of fraying to the spine ends and faint spotting to the front board, else bright and unmarked. In the correct salmon colored boards. Jacket priced at $2.00 and with the publisher's Fourth Avenue address. Some loss to spine extremities and small closed tears to the front panel along upper edge and near lower joint; chip to upper front panel. Small stains to verso of jacket not visible on recto. Minor toning to the jacket, but on the whole complete and much nicer than usually encountered. The French and English editions were both released by Reynal and Hitchcock in 1943, after the author completed the work during his exile in New York. Over the course of eight days, the mysterious Little Prince recounts the story of his brief life to an aviator stranded in the Sahara after a plane crash. A best-selling children's book from the time of its release, it also remains a philosophical and spiritual work that touches adult readers. As the Little Prince shares his observations about the worlds he has visited, including our own, we have the opportunity to reflect on the kind of people we become as we enter adulthood -- and how we might work to make ourselves and the world a kinder place. Indeed, while the Little Prince often laments the foibles and tragedies of the human world, it is in nature he finds positive truth. The Rose, the Fox, and the Snake carry important lessons about love, commitment, and the finite nature of life. Sa … [Click Below for Full Description]

BLYTON, Enid
London Hodder & Stoughton August 1943. 1st Edition, 1st Impression. 12 x 19.5 cm blue boards with black titles to front and spine, pictorial endpapers printed in blue, white and black, colour frontispiece, 8 full page colour illustrations (4 in red and black and 4 in blue and black) and numerous illustrations in black only throughout. The first impression dust jacket is unclipped and shows a price of 6/- net on the front flap, whilst the back flap has the extract from the Daily Sketch and lists the Happy, Merry and Jolly Story Books as called for. The boards are in at least very good plus condition, having very slight rubbing to tips of the corners and slight toning at the spine tips corresponding to chips in the dust jacket, although there is a faint 8mm band of fading across the top of the spine (when first acquired, the dust jacket had slipped down thereby exposing that band), otherwise the colour is beautiful, uniform and fresh. There is very light dust marking to the top edge. All titles are bright and fresh. The binding is firm and square. There are about six spots on the top edge and the same on the fore edge of the text block. Internally, the book is generally excellent. The colour illustrated endpapers are lovely and fresh and free from any cracks or splits at the inner hinges. The pages, given the wartime economy paper used, are very clean and fresh, noting light marks to the title page and a single spot at the fore edge of p15-19, with only the odd very occasional additional spot thereafter. There is a 1cm repaired tear at the fore edge of p111/112. The dust jack … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Saint-Exupery, Antoine de
Reynal & Hitchcock, New York, 1943. Saint-Exupery, himself a World War II aviator, wo … [Click Below for Full Description]

CAGNEY, James (Jimmy Cagney)
1943. A collection of Two Autographed Letters Signed and seven Typed Letters Signed from screen legend James Cagney (1899-1986) to his close friend, artist Will Crawford (1869-1944), dating from 1926 to 1943. Also with two Signed letters (one typed and the other in holograph) from the actor's wife, Frances "Billie" Cagney; an original photo of the three of the together; and an envelope addressed and illustrated by Crawford to Cagney. The letters have some toning due to age and a couple of oxidation spots but are in remarkably nice shape; on average they are near fine or better. As newlyweds in the 1920 the Cagneys lived in the Free Acres artist colony in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey. There they formed a bond with Crawford, an original Free Acres resident and career artist who illustrated a host of children's books and popular magazines, including *Puck*, *The Century*, *McClure's*, *Scribner's*, and *Redbook*. It was a relationship that lasted until Crawford's death in 1944. The letters to Crawford stretch from Cagney's early years as a vaudevillian player to his emergence as one of the biggest stars of the silver screen. They demonstrate Cagney's close friendship with the older artist as evidenced by his financial assistance to Crawford, visits to Crawford from California, and even a special effort to arrange a meeting between Crawford and the noted journalist Lincoln Steffens. The letters reveal Cagney as a man who never forgot his friends or stopped giving to those for whom he cared and who needed it most. A wonderful collection of letters that present a peek into the pr … [Click Below for Full Description]

1943. Signed photograph of the great pianist and composer with his granddaughter Sofie Wolkonsky, both smiling broadly.  Signed "S. Rachmaninoff" and dated 1943, the year of his death.  Some ink marks in the margins, otherwise in fine condition. 8 x 10 inches (21.5 x 25.8 cm).Beginning in 1933, when she was 8 years old, Rachmaninoff composed a series of short songs for her which he called "Sophie's Songs." Rachmaninoff spent the summers of 1940 and 1941 in Centerport, a hamlet in the Town of Huntington, at the former Honeyman Estate, and it was there that he wrote "Symphonic Dances," his last major orchestral composition before his death, overlooking Long Island Sound. Though signed in 1943, the present photograph was taken there.  [Attributes: In Dust Jacket]

Vilaine. New York, Alfred A. Knopf, 1943. First Edition. First Impression. Hardback. A very good copy. A signed copy of a significant work of science fiction. Published the previous year in three parts in Black Mask. Adapted for cinema three times, and also for Orson Welles' radio dramatisation (of War of the Worlds fame). Jacket has a little bumping and wear to the spine tips, and some tape ghosting to the flaps and rear plate. Some more ghosting to jacket reverse. Spine tips bumped to the boards. Cover art by W. [Yugoslavia], 1943. An important collection of 14 rare pamphlets and magazines printed clandestinely by Yugoslav Partisans during the last two years of World War II. The Partisans were the most successful resistance movement against the Axis occupation of Europe. During the four years of their existence they created a complete underground society, with their own distinct social customs, visual culture, literature, performing arts, schools, legal and governmental systems, communication networks, and methods of conducting guerrilla and conventional warfare. Most of their publications were printed by clandestine or underground presses hidden from their enemies within occupied Yugoslavia. The corpus of their surviving works is diverse, and considering the circumstances of their production, by turns crude or surprisingly sophisticated in content, graphic design, and illustration. This collection features 14 pamphlets chosen for their subject matter and rarity: *OCLC* locates no copies of 11 titles, and only two copies each of the other three works. Included is the only known surviving first edition of Matej Bor's *Raztrganci* [The Vagabonds], the most acclaimed Partisan work of theatre, and one of the earliest first-hand accounts of life inside the Mauthausen concentration camp, printed by a Partisan press in 1944. Also included are four other works of arts and entertainment (theatre, music, poems), four military manuals, one medical field manual and one medical journal, a children's alphabet book, and a pamphlet about Muslim women Partisans. Most are mimeographed, with mimeogra … [Click Below for Full Description]
