Smith, Betty
New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1943. First edition of Smith's classic first novel. Octavo, original green cloth. Signed by the author on the front free endpaper in the year of publication, "Sincerely, Betty Smith Brooklyn, N.Y. September, 1943." Near fine in a near fine first issue dust jacket with a touch of shelfwear. An exceptional example. "Forty years before Holden Caulfield abandoned Pencey Prep to begin his ill-fated Manhattan odyssey, Francie Nolan struggled to obtain an education in the teeming tenement neighborhood of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Francie grows up nurtured by the loving gallantries of her father, a singing waiter who drinks too much, and the rigorous austerities practiced by her brave mother, a janitress who reads to her children each night from the complete plays of Shakespeare and the 'Protestant Bible'. The book was an instant best-seller, with 300,000 copies purchased in the first six weeks. Writing in the Yale review, Orville Prescott praised A Tree Grows in Brooklyn as a 'rich and rare example of regional local color writing, filled to the scuppers with Brooklynese, Brooklyn folk-ways and Brooklyn atmosphere" (New York Public Library Books of the Century, 207). It was the basis for the 1945 film directed by Elia Kazan, starring James Dunn, Dorothy McGuire, Joan Blondell, and Peggy Ann Garner, who won a Special Academy Award for Outstanding Child Actress of 1945. James Dunn won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in the film.

Rand, Ayn
Indianapolis: Bobbs-Merrill Company, 1943. First edition, first issue with first edition stated on the copyright page of the author's first major novel, as well as her first best-seller. Octavo, bound in full morocco, gilt titles to the spine, raised bands, gilt ruled to the front and rear panel, marbled endpapers, original red cloth bound in at rear. Boldly signed by Ayn Rand on the title page. In fine condition. Although Rand was a previously published novelist and had a successful Broadway play, she faced difficulty in finding a publisher she thought right for The Fountainhead. She let Macmillian Publishing go when they rejected her demand for better publicity (Branden, 1986), and when her agent criticized the novel, she fired him and handled submissions herself (Burns, 2009). After sifting through eleven more publishers, Rand finally released The Fountainhead with Bobbs-Merrill Company in 1943. The reception was instant, and The Fountainhead became a bestseller in two years. The protagonist, Howard Roark, whose character was thought to be inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright, is a young architect fighting against convention. Cited by numerous architects as an inspiration, Ayn Rand said the theme of the book was "individualism versus collectivism, not within politics but within a man's soul." Rand chose architecture as the analogy of her heady themes because of the context of the ascent of modern architecture. It provided an appropriate mode to make relevant her beliefs that the individual is of supreme value, the "fountainhead" of creativity, and that selfishness, properly u … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

New York, Alfred A. Knopf, 1943. First Edition. First Impression. Hardback. A very good copy. A signed copy of a significant work of science fiction. Jacket has a little bumping and wear to the spine tips, and some tape ghosting to the flaps and rear plate. Some more ghosting to jacket reverse. Spine tips bumped to the boards. Cover art by W. Smith, Betty
New York: Harper and Brothers, 1943. First edition. A Fine copy of the book in like dust jacket. Exceptionally scarce in this condition. Betty Smith's iconic first novel was based on her own experiences growing up as a child of immigrants in Williamsburg. At its release in 1943, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn gained immediate popularity, selling over 300,000 copies in the first six weeks after it was published. The book's success then and now has been borne out of its ability to speak to multiple marginalized communities: girls, immigrants, the working class, those struggling with abuse and addiction. Readers continue to connect with the voice of protagonist Francie, who describes Brooklyn and thus her own story: "It's a magic city and it isn't real...It's like a dream...But it's like a dream of being poor and fighting." Later turned into a 1945 film by Elia Kazan, the novel was also placed on the New York Public Library's list of Books of the Century. And a New York Times review declared "Smith has a treasure lode and she knows it -- and in this one book she gives it all away...The book is a social document with the power of photographs. It gives the detail that illuminates the past. But it's the book's emotional life that has kept it in print." Fine in Fine dust jacket. Fine in Fine dust jacket. Rodgers, Richard (music); Oscar Hammerstein II (book, lyrics); Lynn Riggs (play); Rouben Mamouian (director); Alfred Drake, Joan Roberts, Howard Da Silva (starring)
The Theatre Guild, New York. Draft script for the original run of the 1943 Broadway musical. Copy belonging to member of the dancing ensemble Patrick Meaney, with his name and address in holograph ink on the front wrapper, and holograph annotations throughout. Also included are two sets of musical notation, for Violin C and 3rd Trumpet respectively, each with Meaney's name printed on them and additional holograph annotations, for the songs "Oh, What a Beatiful Mornin'," "People Will Say We're in Love," and "Oklahoma," as well as a single 8 x 10 inch photograph featuring four headshots of Meaney and his name and address written on the verso. A landmark in American musical theatre, based on the 1931 play "Green Grow the Lilacs" by Lynn Riggs, and the first musical by the team of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. The musical opened at the St. James Theatre on May 31, 1943 and ran over five years for a total of 2212 performances, a record for a Broadway show at the time. Rodgers and Hammerstein would receive a special Pulitzer Prize in 1944, although the original run would receive no Tony Award nominations, primarily because the award didn't exist yet. Revived five times on Broadway, including a limited 75th Anniversary run begun April 7, 2019, and the basis for the 1955 film, directed by Fred Zimmerman, and starring Gordon MacRae, Shirley Jones, and Rod Steiger, as well as a staple of musical theatre at all levels. Blue titled wrappers, with credits for music by Richard Rodgers and book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein, 2nd. 78 leaves, with last page of text numbered 2- … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bernard Law Montgomery, General, Eighth Army
Tunisia: British Eighth Army, 28 April 1943. Leaflet. This compelling Second World War artifact is an original message from General Bernard Law Montgomery to his Eighth Army troops on 28 April 1943 during the final Allied effort to expel Axis forces from North Africa. This printed message is not only a remarkable survivor, but is signed by Montgomery “B. L. Montgomery” just below his printed name. While the signature is undated, it seems almost certainly to have been signed in situ; Montgomery was created Viscount Montgomery of Alamein in January 1946 and thereafter routinely signed “Montgomery of Alamein”. The leaflet measures 8 x 10 inches (20.3 x 25.4 cm) printed in black on a single side of thin, acidic stock. Condition shows wear expected for an original piece of North African theatre ephemera. A single vertical crease and two horizontal creases testify that the leaflet was folded, notionally to fit in a soldier's pocket. The folds and edges show wear and fractional chipping, there is overall soiling, particularly to the blank verso, and a central rectangle of the printed and signed recto is differentially toned, indicating that it was once framed and thereby exposed to sun. Nonetheless, like the solder to whom it once belonged and the General who authored and signed it, this copy survived. Montgomery's “EIGHTH ARMY Personal Message from the Commander” specifies that it is “To be read out to all troops” and consists of eight numbered points. The first three points encapsulate recent Eighth Army objectives and accomplishments. Points 4-7 are a spur to action with a spe … [Click Below for Full Description]

1943. Up for sale here is The Little Prince, by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. It was published by Reynal & Hitchcock of New York in 1943. This is a first edition, first printing of this classic work, as evidenced by the following points: Salmon-colored binding, not the blue-green of later printings Publisher address on front flap of dust jacket is 386 Fourth Avenue, New York Price on front flap of dust jacket is $2.00 Publisher colophon on last page is five lines long No printing is stated on copyright page (later printings are stated, e.g., "Second Printing") The pictures give a good idea of the book's condition, but I can add the following: The binding is sound. The dust jacket has numerous tears, and some small pieces are missing (top and bottom of spine, bottom of front cover, bottom corner of front flap). No bookplates, stickers, stamps, or writing inside. I see one page edge with a very small dog-ear; I don't see any torn pages. There are a couple light smudges on the front free endpaper, and a couple small smudges at the bottom of page 33. There is a tiny black dot in the center of the bottom page edges that touches a few pages in the middle of the book (perhaps a stray dot of ink during printing?). Toward the top of the front of the book it looks to have been pierced by something small, and this has created a matching indentation on the first dozen pages of the book. The book just smells like a book -- nothing else. I'm trying to be thorough here because I realize that this is a major acquisition for the new owner. But, to me anyway, all of the issues seem on the minor … [Click Below for Full Description]

Harper & Brothers Publishers, New York, 1943. First edition of Smith's classic first novel. Octavo, original green cloth. Signed by the author on the front free endpaper in the year of publication, "Sincerely, Betty Smith Brooklyn, N.Y. September, 1943" Near fine in a near fine first issue dust jacket with a touch of shelfwear. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]
