CHURCHILL, WINSTON
London: Ministry of Information, 1941. First edition. CHURCHILL WARNS THE ENGLISH PEOPLE TO "STAND FIRM" IN THE FACE OF A GERMAN INVASION. In early 1941, when a German invasion of England seemed a very real possibility, Duff Cooper, then Minister of Information, helped draft a document to distribute to the people with information on what to do in the event the Germans landed on English soil. "While the document [Beating the Invader] was prepared as a how-to or what-to-do document by Duff Cooper's Ministry of Information, it opens with Churchill's powerful and inspirational introduction, in which he begins with the bravery-invoking assumption, 'If invasion comes, everyone--young or old, men and women--will be eager to play their part worthily.' Noting that the greater part of the country will be unaffected by any invading force, he assures his readers that the British forces will do their part, inflicting 'very heavy British counter-attacks' on the enemy as they land by means of bomber attacks on their lodgments. "He goes on: 'The fewer civilians or non-combatants in these areas, the better--apart from essential workers who must remain. So if you are advised by the authorities to leave the place where you live, it is your duty to go elsewhere when you are told to leave. When the attack begins, it will be too late to go; and unless you receive definite instructions to move, your duty then will be to stay where you are. You will then have to get into the safest place you can find, and stay there until the battle is over. For all of you then the order and the duty will be: "STA … [Click Below for Full Description]

Alexander B Halliday
1941. See listing for details. "Looking backward is pleasant and looking forward is uncertain and, so, in January 1941 I take you back to October 1894" Alexander B Halliday (1869-1965) "While the tale of the trip may be of little interest to anyone other than its participants it has as the years have gone by brought back to me many incidents that would have easily escaped my memory and has reminded me of my delightful companionship with two good friends, which promised to add to the pleasure of 10 days at sea, but which did not end until we parted in Palmero Sicily in February 1895... they had no definite itinerary and I was practically free to go where I pleased, we three made our plans almost from day to day with only the thought of tomorrow in mind....I am probably the sole survivor of the "three men in the boat" And of many persons we met and so I have the solitary privilege of looking backwards over nearly half a century....As I write the second world war is in full force and at this moment there is great military and naval activity along the Mediterranean and Gibraltar, Tangier, Tunisia, Malta and Sicily... in 1894 peace ruled...." Alexander was just 25 years old when he experienced this 4 month long adventure! The three ring binder contains typewritten family historical information (not a genealogical tree) of the Hallidays with an amazing, very detailed typed Manuscript Travel Diary by Alexander B Halliday dated January 1941 shortly after he graduated from Law School. The first 3 pages of his diary serve as an introduction to his life. He boarded the SS Werra at Hob … [Click Below for Full Description]

London, Bodley Head, 1941. First Edition. First Impression. Hardback. A near fine book in a very good jacket. An uncommon book in jacket, moreso signed. Included in Anthony Burgess's list of Ninety-Nine Novels. In the introduction Burgess recounts how he read a copy returning from the war, and was struck by it's being Kafkaesque yet incorporating the three-dimensional characters more associated with English literature. He also notes that its claim to 'be regarded as a modern classic is as sound as that of Orwell's novel [Nineteen Eighty-Four]', though less obvious given its subtlety. Less obvious too than his earlier Wild Goose Chase. A quintessentially English dystopia (perhaps it wouldn't be amiss to call it a cosy dystopia, akin to the cosy catastrophes of the subsequent decade). The dystopia in question being the aerodrome itself and the local environs. A smaller scale affair, than Orwell's and most that come thereafter. An important book, undervalued in the current day, but welcome to sit on a shelf alongside Orwell, Kafka, Zamyatin and Huxley in the great early dystopias. [Clute & Nicholls, p1299 & Burgess, p132]. The jacket has a 60mm jagged tear to the upper jacket, and a 25mm tear to the other side. Spine tips rubbed and a little chipped. A little soiled. Spine tips bumped, edges a little dusty. Owner's inscription to front pastedown (The Foster family of Egton Manor, North Yorkshire). Winter Park, Florida and others, 1941. Hardcover. Near Fine. Oblong quarto measuring roughly 12 x 7." String-tied boards embossed in blind and title "Photographs" in gilt on the front board. Contains 119 gelatin silver photographs. Various sizes, probably the majority are 2" x 2.75" with the rest mostly larger. Corners of the boards a little rubbed else near fine, the images are near fine or better. Well-captioned, many of the subjects identified with first and last names and the locations where they were taken. The photos, dated 1941 were compiled by one individual, likely a woman with all the photos captioned in the same hand, in some cases acknowledging if someone else took the photograph. Almost all of the images were taken at Rollins. Photographs depict students socializing and posing around campus. Of note are seven photographs depicting Dodo Bundy (i.e. Dorothy Cheney), a renowned American tennis player who was the first American to win the Australian Open in 1938. The only images not taken at Rollins are a couple in Miami, and a few that depict a road trip home from school northwards through Georgia and North Carolina, possibly to watch Bundy play: four of these depict her in action on the tennis court.Rollins College in Winter Park (outside of Orlando) is the oldest post-secondary institution in Florida. A pleasing and geographically homogenous album with sharp and clear images.

Soseki, Natsume (translated by Ineko Sato)
Japan The Hokuseido Press 1941. First English translation. Complete with "Chrysanthemum" frontispiece. The book is firmly bound in clean, slightly bumped and rubbed black cloth, lettered in gilt to the spine. The text block is toned and slightly dusty with some minor marks, to the rear of the book is a tipped in advertising flyer from the publisher. The dust jacket is the original, it is slightly toned, chipped and rubbed with minor staining. The Sato translation preceded the McClellan version by sixteen years, but due to the interruption of WW2 it was little seen by its intended audience until reprinted by a new publisher in 1948. Unsurprisingly this 1941 first edition is infrequently encountered. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]
