NAVAL INTELLIGENCE DIVISION. [MASON, Kenneth, a.o.].
682 pp.First and only edition of a geographical handbook on Iraq and the Persian Gulf, published on behalf of the Naval Intelligence Division (NID) of the British Admiralty. Written as part of the Geographical Handbook Series of which 58 volumes were written between 1941 and 1946 by two teams of British academics, this volume aims to educate Naval Officers on all matters related to Iraq, under military occupation by Britain since 1941, and the Persian Gulf. The book is divided into twelve chapters, dealing with a wide array of subjects: geology, geography, history, vegetation, agriculture, administration, ethnography, economy etc. As the book was written by English academics, the section devoted to the climate and weather is particularly extensive. The majority of the text was produced by Professor Kenneth Mason of the School of Geography at Oxford. Mason had trained at the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich and seen service in France and the Middle East during World War I. He was part of the Survey of India in the 1920s, appointed to the chair of Geography at Oxford in 1932 and subsequently led the Oxford team producing the handbooks. "The purpose of the handbooks was to supply, by scientific research and skilled arrangement, material for the discussion of naval, military, and political problems ..." (p. III). The handbooks were for the use of naval officers only, but were made public after the NID was dissolved in 1964.With a few markings in pencil. Spine worn with a large tear at the back hinge and thumbed throughout; nevertheless a good, structurally sound copy.l Cf. Clo … [Click Below for Full Description]

MARSH Edward.; ELIOT T.S.
1941. First edition. 8vo., original blue green cloth. London, Faber & Faber. The copy of Eddie Marsh, with quite extensive manuscript notes to several of the essays. They show a balanced judgment on Eliot, ranging from enthusastic agreement to hostile scorn, especially on any grammatical or stylistic lapses. The most extensively annotated essay is 'Tradition and the individual talent': he approves of Eliot's point that the ?existing order? of works of art is altered and it is no surprise that ?the past should be altered by the present as much as the present is directed by the past? A fascinating copy, demonstrating a close critical reading of two of the early 20th Century's arbiters of poetical taste. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Eric Sloane
JJ Little and Ives, 1941. This is the book Clouds, Air and Wind written and illustrated by Eric Sloan. Like all of Eric Sloan's books, they are not only a pleasure to read, but a work of art to look at. It's 77 pages with what about half of them with either a black and white illustration or a full on blue/white illustration (see photo showing the blue-ish drawing). This particular one is a 1st edition and handwritten in pencil by Mr. Sloan as #51. This is on the inside right cover with a full illustration done in 1942 from Dave Martin to Ed Callahan. In pencil it says "A FIRST COPY OF A FIRST EDITION FOR A FIRST FRIEND---" [See photo for other pencil note in upper right cover.] The condition is good overall. The outside has some scuffs and wear at the edges and some slight smudges/dirt marks. [See photos] However, the inside is excellent, especially for a book 79 years old. Besides the inside front and back cover with a little yellowing along the binding from the original glue when manufactured, there is no other flaws. No bent or torn pages. If you have any further questions please ask. This will be shipped securely. Returns accepted and will be paid by seller. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

FLEISCHER, Nat
1941. Two complete and one partial draft of a Manuscript by Fleischer of a murder mystery with occult overtones set in Africa. Housed in a manila envelope with Fleischer's ink note: "This, in my opinion is a good story for a book on Motion Pictures. I wrote it in 1941." Small tears and creases, overall near fine, envelope with some wear. Fleischer was a noted sportswriter, particularly about boxing, who founded *The Ring* magazine, co-founded the Boxing Writers Association of America, and was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990. The manuscript is an apparently unpublished mystery story about two close college friends who depart England to oversee a family plantation in Liberia and encounter an evil overseer who controls the workers through voodoo. When the oversee is mortally wounded following a foiled plan to kill the men he curses them leading to the mysterious death of one friend and a murder trial for the other. Expectedly, there is a fair bit of boxing - and unexpectedly, a murderous chimpanzee. An unpublished and unknown story by this noted boxing writer. List: 1. *The Strangling Shadow*: 57pp. Typed rectos only. Mostly carbon copy. Modest corrections throughout. 2. *The Strangling Shadow*: 68pp. Typed rectos only. Ribbon copy. Corrections in type throughout and a few by hand. 3. *The Avenging Shadow*. 1-2, 4-7, 9-14pp. Typed rectos only. Carbon copy. Moderate to heavy corrections. Manuscript fragment, possibly an early version of *The Strangling Shadow*.

'End of the Beginning' chronicles the turning point of the war, following victories at Alamein and Stalingrad, and the North Africa landings. 'Onwards' features speeches delivered prior to the invasion of Europe on 6 June '44. 'Liberation' continues the 'hopeful' nature of the 1944 speeches, whilst 'Victory' provides us with the final, triumphant war speeches. Six 'secret' speeches concludes the series. Hi, I am moving to Spain so alas I am selling my Wisden Collection. Here we have an 1941 Linen Cloth Wisden in Very Good Condition. The linens from 1941 are hard to find, especially in this condition. Nice covers, with a couple of light marks, mainly to the rear, strong hinges and a straight spine with very nice pages within. A couple of knocks to a couple of pages if being picky and some marks to the page block but overall a very nice 1941 that I was proud to own. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Hi, This lot is a 1941 Original Linen Wisden. It is in very good++ condition. The covers are mark free and in great order, internally superb, only things to note are a feint ""Ray"" to the top of the front cover and a touch of freying at the corners , a top book for a hard to find year.

POTTER, Beatrix [HEELIS, H. B.]
Feb 22, 1941. A two page letter, written on both sides of single sheet of letter paper, signed H.B. Heelis, written to Charles Forrester, a Carlisle cattle farmer. With original envelope. A charming letter in very good condition indeed. Paper unevenly torn from a notebook by Potter. Occasional patches of fading to the ink and some light spotting to the envelope. Mrs Heelis comments on the bull she has just bought from Mr Forrester, "He is a beauty - so compact which is what is required here", and her plans, "I would be inclined to put the heifers to the bull younger.". She talks about the weather and the impact on her livestock, "I lost far more sheep with drought than in the snow itself." [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Hi, This lot is an Original 1941 Hardback Wisden that I am selling on behalf of a fellow Holmfirthian. It is in OK condition at best but a rare year. This book has a few issues to the boards, there are 2 creases to the front and someone has punched a hole through the front board which has left a thin 1 cm line to the front board and a 2 inch line to the page behind it. It doesnt do further into the book. The front gilts are bright but the spine gilt has faded. The hinges are strong , you can see a tiny bit of mesh at the front but from page 3 the bok is very nice internally. Hard year to find and nicely priced. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Hi, This lot is an Original 1941 Wisden Hardback. This lot is in just good condition as it has been heavily restored. This rare book is complete but the hinges and the gilt to front and spine have been restored. Minor restoration to parts of the book, possibly boards have been cleaned, some underlining and ticks inside. A rare book and although restoration has taken place it is a great price.
