1941. Yeehaw! Rodeo circuit photos of riders from rodeos in Arizona, California, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Ohio, New York, Delaware, Mexico, etc. This scrapbook, put together by Jack "Pecos" Whatley, a rodeo circuit cowboy. It documents his co-riders and friends traveling around the country. Amazing snaps of bull riders mid-fall and mid-ride, cowgirls, rolling desert hills and horses, livestock, desert towns, soldiers and barracks at Abilene, Texas, Ft. Sill, etc. General rabble-rousing cowboy life. Included are armband patches and numbers from riders, rodeo tickets, drawings, high school ephemera, etc. One newspaper clipping and photo tells of two fellow rodeo cowboys who confessed to participating in the brutal, drunken and deadly beating of an English sailor in a Manhattan hotel while in NY for a rodeo. The ornate leather cover has "Pecos" embossed on the front. It measures 10" x 13.25" and there are thirty-seven pages with about 160 photos and lots of terrific rodeo ephemera. Written on the inside cover is "Pecos Whatley, 12 61 - 19th St., Douglas, Ariz, June 22, 1941. The pages are all loose and several photos and ephemera are detached and a few have some tape on them. The condition has seen better days, but the content is amazing. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

John Wisden
Hi, This lot is an Original 1941 Wisden Hardback with a nice twist. The twist to this book is that attached to page 3 is a one page letter signed by the editor Haddon Whitaker , the Owner a WF Curtis (bookplate to page 2) must have written to Haddon and Haddon expressed his thanks for his letter in such a year when the bok was tricky to create. The book itself has quite worn boards and the gilt to the front is fading and the spine gilt has faded, strong hinges which is nice to see and very clean pages inside after page 4 as page 2 and 3 have the book plate and letter attached. no restoration.

John Steinbeck
New York: Viking, 1941. Steinbeck, John & Ricketts, E.F. (Ed) - Sea of Cortez: A Leisurely Journal of Travel and Research - Viking Press: New York, 1941 - First Edition / First Printing - "First Published in December 1941" stated on the copyright page with no mention of later printings as required in order to denote the first printing of the first edition. The book has some soiling, a pair of bumps and some light general shelf wear. The boards remain straight and clean, the lettering is bright, the top stain is deep in color, the binding is square and firm and internally there is a previous owner name neatly stamped on the front end page. There is also a faint damp stain to the edge of the block which extends inward on some of the pages. The dust jacket has rubbing and edge wear with a pair of closed tears, some shallow chips, rubbing, and damping which is most noticeable to the rear. All this being said this is still a rather solid example of a shockingly uncommon and very desirable book. All illustrations and photographs are present. An early work written with Ricketts who, along with becoming one of Steinbeck's close friends, was a leader in the field of marine biology. This title spawned, but should not be confused with, the later and much easier to locate 1951 book The Log from the Sea of Cortez. Likely Steinbeck's most important work of non-ficiton. All books are offered with a full 30 day postage paid return policy. All books which are in dust jackets will be mailed with a clear archival dust jacket protector fitted. Travers, P.L
Harper & Brothers Publishers, New York, 1941. First edition of this classic work, a fictional diary of Sabrina Lind, an eleven-year-old English girl who is sent on the long voyage across the sea to her aunt in America. Octavo, original cloth, frontispiece. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author in the year of publication on the front free endpaper, "K. Jean Bourne, P.L. Travers 6 December '41." With drawings by Gertrude Hermes. Near fine in a very good price-clipped dust jacket with reinforcement to the verso. Rare and desirable signed. At the outbreak of World War II, Pamela (P. L.) Travers left England for America at the request of the British Ministry of Education. I Go By Sea, I Go By Land is an account of this evacuation to the United States told from the point of view of Sabrina, a dislocated eleven-year-old girl who keeps a diary of the adventure. Sabrina and her nine-year-old brother James are accompanied on this journey by a family friend named Pel and her baby Romulus. The book was first published in 1941 while Travers was still abroad and, as reported by her biographer Valery Lawson, intensely homesick; a homesickness expressed in the words of Pel: "It's the earth I shall miss, quite apart from human relationships. It is necessary to me. I feel that my body is made of the woods and rivers." [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

Knopf, 1941. 1st edition, limited (1/1000) numbered, full blue cloth, with dust jacket. Roethke's first solo book publication, specially signed by Roethke in his characteristic green fountain pen ink on the title page. The present copy is hand numbered "600" on the colophon page. The book has internal browning evidence from newspaper clipping, else fine and with very little wear. The dust jacket is complete (not price clipped) with only minimal edge chipping primarily to crown of spine. Roethke won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1954 and the National Book Award in 1959. Uncommon in the potentially fragile jacket, and especially so signed. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; In Dust Jacket]

Carson, Rachel L
New York: Simon & Schuster, 1941. First edition of Carson's first book and her personal favorite. Octavo, original cloth, illustrated. Near fine in the rare original price-clipped dust jacket with some unnecessary tape repair. Illustrated by Howard Frech. Under the Sea Wind describes the behaviour of fish and seabirds accurately, but in story form, often using the scientific names of species as character names. Carson's stated goal in doing so was "to make the sea and its life as vivid a reality for those who may read the book as it has become for me during the past decade." The first of her characters is introduced this way: With the dusk a strange bird came to the island from its nesting grounds on the outer banks. Its wings were pure black, and from tip to tip their spread was more than the length of a man's arm. It flew steadily and without haste across the sound, its progress as measured and as meaningful as that of the shadows which little by little were dulling the bright water path. The bird was called Rynchops, the black skimmer. The middle section of the book follows the life-story of Scomber, the mackerel, while the last part describes pond creatures such as eels and ducks. A glossary at the end of the book provides additional detail. Today It is recognized today as one of the "definitive works of American nature writing" (Bryson, 242). Cain, James M
Knopf, 1941. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good / Good. A prime artifact of Hollywood history. Joan Crawford's copy of the first edition of James M. Cain's Mildred Pierce. Presented to her in 1947 by a noted Hollywood director one year after she won the Academy Award for her portrayal of Mildred Pierce in the classic film. A good first edition book in a good dust jacket, with a full page inscription from Cain before the movie was made to his close friend and prominent movie director Marshall Neilan, noting that he was the first to ever read the book. Neilan later inscribed the book to Joan Crawford shortly after the film came out. Neilan was a prominent Hollywood figure at the time, having written Hell's Angels and having directed many successful movies, but he did not end up directing Mildred Pierce. However, it is likely that Cain gave it to his good friend first to read in the hopes that he would help get it produced. Housed in a custom-made collector's slipcase. $7,500. Erle Stanley Gardner
New York: Morrow, 1941. Very good plus in its original dust jacket. Inscribed by Gardner. The Case of The Haunted Husband by Erle Stanley Gardner. New York: Morrow Company, 1941 First edition, first printing. Inscription boldly done in his flourish by Gardner on the front free endpaper. ----- Hardback in original black cloth stamped in red on the spine and front board. A bit of corner wear. Very good plus copy. This copy has its original non-price-clipped dust jacket with chips and tears and some cello tape on recto and verso. A few closed tears and areas are reinforced by rice paper for strength. Overall a good jacket. It will be enclosed in a clear Mylar protector and I have shown photos of the book and jacket both ways. The Mylar is better for appearance and strength. A rare book to encounter in a dust jacket. This is nineteenth Perry Mason book in its first printing. It did have a few reprints by Morrow in this format and is so indicated on the verso of the title page of 1933 early Morrow printings. This one has no later indication of printings. Rare to find a first edition copy and more uncommon to find a nice copy like this. This is the first Perry Mason book in the series by Erle Stanley Gardner. This is a very good copy above what are usually found. I am open to any reasonable offer, please no low offers on this book. This was to be part of the Ventura Erle Stanley Gardner Museum here but never materialized. Gardner lived and practiced law here and wrote the first three Perry Mason books in Ventura.
