Although Pepys had no maritime experience, he rose by patronage, hard work and his talent for administration, to be the Chief Secretary to the Admiralty under both King Charles II and subsequently King James II. The detailed private diary Pepys kept is one of the most important primary sources for the English Restoration period. It provides a combination of personal revelation and eyewitness accounts of great events, such as the Great Plague of London, the Second Dutch War and the Great Fire of London. Tidemark to rear board of volume I and slight age-toning to front board of volume X. Internally, firmly bound, bright and clean. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED.

        HOW TO COOK A WOLF

New York: Duell, Sloan and Pearce, 1942. New York: Duell, Sloan and Pearce, 1942 Fisher, M. F. K. HOW TO COOK A WOLF. New York: Duell, Sloan and Pearce, 1942. First Edition. Fisher, M.F.K. New York: Duell, Sloan and Pearce, [1942]. 8vo., light gray cloth decoration with wolf's head surrounded by vegetables stamped white at the upper cover & with titles stamped white at the spine. A fine copy [a bit of foxing at the spine], Contents fine & fresh, in a very good or better attractive price-clipped dustwrapper with some neatly executed professional conservation primarily at the extremities. Author's scarce third book, especially so in dustwrapper - nicely preserved. A very attractive copy. Fisher wrote "How to Cook a Wolf" in 1942, in the midst of World War II, just as food rationing programs were kicking into high gear with strict limits placed on basics like sugar, butter, meat, & coffee. War-time slogans encouraged American households to "make do, or do without." [Fisher wrote "How to Cook a Wolf." as a reminder of the pleasure - the rapture - you could still find in food, even under a tight budget or war-time rationing. "I early on thought, as long as we have to eat to live, we may as well have fun doing it. There should be some enjoyment of food, as we do with making love, or keeping warm. It's one of the three basic needs of our lives," she said. "How to Cook a Wolf" reads like an issue of Lady's Home Journal, if the editorial staff were taken over by a philosopher with an empty stomach, a slightly tipsy poet and your mischievous, foxy godmother who once kept many lovers. Best lines include: "Probably one of the most private things in the world is an egg, until it is broken." On cooking during a war-time black-out: "Use as many fresh things as you can, always, and then trust to luck and your blackout cupboard and what you have decided, inside yourself, about the dignity of man." And this advice, from the chapter called "How to Lure the Wolf": "One way to look your prettiest in the kitchen, and make the wolf think that even if his hot breath whuffs through the keyhole and ruffles your very curls you are nigh adamant, is to put up a little mirror." "How to Cook a Wolf" is part cookbook, part essay collection. Fisher shares practical recipes that can be made cheaply: how to make your own toothpaste; a recipe for fried calves' brains, since that cut of meat was cheaper and more readily available under rationing programs; instructions for a good, low-cost sherry cocktail.] - Weekend America.. 1st Edition.

        Corregidor: Isle of Delusion

Shangai, China: Press Bureau of the Imperial Japanese Army General Headquarters in China. Printed by The Mercury Press, 1942. Shangai, China: Press Bureau of the Imperial Japanese Army General Headquarters in China. Printed by The Mercury Press, 1942. 114 pages; photographs throughout. Bowed cover; worn with taped spine. Lightly soiled pages. Dampstain to rear cover and endpapers. Owner's name (Lt. Col. R. W. Carlton) inside front cover. An exceptionally scarce propaganda account of the fall of Corregidor, prepared by a Nisei traitor who served as an officer in the Japanese Army Propaganda Corps. The book was apparently published for use in the Philippines and also distributed to at least some Allied civilian internees in Shanghai prior to their repatriation in 1943. Chapters include General Wainwright Surrenders, Prisoners of War, Fort Mills Hospital, Racial Discrimination, Goodbye Corregidor, an interview with Lieutenant Commander F. H. Callahan, General Wainwright's Appeal, Official Communiques, and Santo Tomas Interment Camp. Uno was a American citizen and strong supporter of Japanese aggression in China. Although he spoke little Japanese, Uno moved to Japan in 1937 and wrote pro-Japanese articles from the Chinese front for publication in the pro-Tokyo Far Eastern Review and other Nisei publications. Between tours in China, Uno returned to the US and made numerous speeches in Japanese communities throughout the west, often with the support of the Japanese American Citizens League. He also engaged in confrontational debates about war with Chinese-Americans. He lost his American citizenship after joining the Japanese Army in 1941. Following the publication this book, Uno was instrumental in broadcasting a propaganda radio program, "The Zero Hour," to US forces in the Pacific that featured Iva Toguri D'Aquino, better known after the war as Tokyo Rose. Uno had three loyal brothers who served in the US Army; each publically requested the opportunity to execute their bother should that become possible. OCLC notes copies at four libraries (Cornell, University of Pittsburgh, New York Public Library, and the Hoover Institute). No auctions recorded at ABPC or AmericanaExchange.. First Edition.         The Insolence of Man. [Unpublished carbon typescript.]

, [1942]. [1942]. 92 leaves (255 × 205 mm) of carbon typescript, comprising title page, introductory quote, table of chapters, and text pages 1-86, housed in an olive cloth chemise and slipcase. Small holes along left margin from removed staples, otherwise clean and all in excellent condition. Original carbon typescript to White's unpublished "philosophical pamphlet" The Insolence of Man, with over a hundred notes and corrections in White's hand, and several critical notes in the margins by David Garnett, to whom White sent this carbon typescript for critique. There are numerous corrections by White and annotations by Garnett. T. H. White, "during the first half of this destitute year [1942]... wrote a treatise, never published, called 'The Insolence of Man.' Since 'The Book of Merlyn' was held up he compressed its non-Arthurian contents into a tract for the times. The Insolence, Importance, Ferocity, Ingenuity, Problems and Future of Man were severally dealt with as though he were lecturing to a class. The lectures are eloquent and convinced - for they are enlargements of his convictions; but the lecturer's tone of voice is contemptuous and the Jack-of-All-Trades quality of White's mind - which he gave England Have My Bones and The Sword in the Stone their flicker of learning lightly worn - shows as parade and arrogance." (Sylvia Townsend Warner, T. H. White, A Biography, p. 194). David Garnett's letter to White regarding this manuscript was written January 31, 1943, and caused a short break in their friendship: "Dear Tim, I was very glad to get your letter and the M.S. Here I shall note down one or two criticisms of the matter which occur to me. (1) You are definite enough about not accepting a God in Man's Image, or a God as judge of man's importance, & I am glad to find it so. But you are still uncritically accepting an absolute ethic which happens to be vaguely Christian & 19th Century. For example you say: 'You can be ingeniously cruel or ingeniously wicked...' Chapter 4. But wickedness, like Justice & other such concepts varies according to place & time..." (David Garnett, The White/Garnett Letters, p. 123). A unique, unpublished text, and an important mouthpiece for White as Merlyn-esque preacher, revealing the the far-reaching thought operating behind the scenes of his Arthurian "children's" books.

        The Music Goes Round

New York: The Macmillan Company. Near Fine in Very Good+ dj. 1942. First Edition. Hardcover. NOISBN . [minor shelfwear, tiny white stain (1/4" if it's that) at bottom edge of front cover; jacket shows a little wear at spine ends and along bottom edge, a couple of tiny edge-tears, some soiling to rear panel]. (frontispiece portrait, B&W photographic plates) Memoir by a pioneering recording engineer, whose career in what was not yet called the "music industry" went back to the very beginning: "As Emile Berliner's assistant, he helped to perfect the disc record, and in 1898 [1898!] was sent to Europe to persuade the musical celebrities of the day to make the first Red Seal records. As chief recorder for the British Gramophone Company he knew Caruso, Tamagno, Patti, Melba, Paderewski, Kreisler, Nikisch, Toscanini, Walter, and all the other glamorous personalities of an age already legendary. He also journeyed far afield on the hunt for folk and special music to record, to Russia, India, and the Far East, encountering many adventures amusing and otherwise on the road." .

This is Your Enemy: A Documentary Record of Nazi Atrocities Against Citizens and Soldiers of Our Soviet Ally [Inscribed Presentation Copy]

New York: Front Line Fighters Fund of the International Workers Order, 1942. New York: Front Line Fighters Fund of the International Workers Order, 1942. First Edition. Interesting association copy of this uncommon work, which combines text by Alvah Bessie with gruesome photographic images of Nazi atrocities in the Soviet Union. The extremely pro-Soviet tone of the work would have been unthinkable a few years later, but in 1942 Russia was still being treated as a staunch ally of the US against the Axis. Bessie's failure to navigate the shifting sands of American anti-communist sentiment would result in his falling victim to the Hollywood Blacklist in 1948, a career blow from which his screenwriting career never fully recovered. Ironically, the recipient of this volume, Spyros Skouras, head of 20th-Century Fox from 1942-1962, was among the group of Hollywood studio executives who issued the famed 1947 "Waldorf Statement," creating the Blacklist and putting Bessie out of work for nearly two decades. & & A fragile and seldom-encountered work, especially in the trade; OCLC shows a modest scattering of 22 holdings, many of these presumably the more common wrappered issue. Oblong quarto (ca 19cm x 26cm). Pictorial linen-backed boards; [48]pp; illus. Bessie has inscribed and signed in ink, on verso of title page, to film producer Spyros Skouras (undated). Slight rubbing to board edges; spine cloth split along crown; text block slightly shaken, but still a Good, sound copy. Issued simultaneously in card wrappers; this the only copy we have seen in boards.
