JIM'S BOOK A COLLECTION OF POEMS AND SHORT STORIES.

New York: Privately Printed, 1942. - Large octavo. Cloth and boards, lettered in gilt. Spine faintly sunned, with a few stray marks to the upper portions of boards, usual toning of the endsheets, but a very good copy. Enclosed in a custom half-morocco folding clamshell box. First edition of the poet's first book, privately printed by his father for presentation. At the time, Merrill was sixteen, and enrolled at Lawrenceville School. This copy bears the poet's presentation inscription, dated contemporary with publication: "To Miss Evans with love and Merry Christmas James Ingram Merrill. 1942." Though the exact number of copies printed has long been a subject of speculation, the bibliographers hypothesize that the edition consisted of "about 200 copies." Whatever the size of the edition, the author presented copies to friends over the following five decades in sufficient numbers to make those inscribed upon publication the very distinct -- and manifestly most desirable -- minority. The nature and occasion of the inscription suggests the recipient may have been a close family friend or teacher. HAGSTROM & BIXBY A1a.

Tony Sarg's Treasure Book. Alice in Wonderland, Treasure Island & Rip VanWinkle

New York: B F Jay, (1942). First edition.. Hardcover. Very good. First in Sarg's series of the Treasure Books. This volume, in the original box, contains shortened versions of Alice In Wonderland, Treasure Island & Rip Van Winkle with movables. So far as we can determine, this copy has all of its movable and loose parts save only the moon face, as expected, which has long since dried and shattered. (Nor are we aware of any copy today with the moon face intact.). Movable ship on the cover, Alice has a movable neck; the Queen's invitation is present, the Mad Hatter tips his hat; the black spot and the map are present, the apple barrel has its apples concealing Jim, and there is a net bag with three jewels in it; Rip's fish and fishing line are there also the American flag, and the movable scene in the rear cover. A near fine exemplar. The original box is present, but the bottom has been artfully replaced. The top is lightly worn and it quite presentable. Montanaro p. 315

Excellent condition. First edition, first printing of Chaplin's telephone speech to a war rally on July 22, 1942 urging the opening of a second front to aid the Soviet Union.         Original Typed Document, signed in ink ("Raymond Chandler"), dated 29 May 1942, assigning exclusive motion picture rights for his unpublished book "entitled BRASHER DOUBLOON (alternate title HIGH WINDOW)"

Los Angeles, 29 may 1942 - Chandler assigns film rights for his third novel, completed in March 1942, here still bearing his original title, The Brasher Doubloon as well as the alternate title that Chandler gave it at Blanche Knopf's suggestion. The High Window was published by Knopf in August 1942. "In May of 1942 The High Window was sold to 20th Century-Fox for $3,500 as a second-run or B picture and was released the following year as Time to Kill" (Macshane, p. 105). At the time of the present assignment, Chandler had established a critical reputation but financial success eluded him. He sold film rights to Farewell, My Lovely (1940) for $2,000, and came to regret this intensely when Murder, My Sweet, the film of Farewell, My Lovely, proved a box office hit but earned Chandler no additional money. Rights to his first novel, The Big Sleep, remained unsold, in large part because of the restrictive climate of censorship of subject matter exercised by the Production Code Administration. Chandler was hired by Paramount in 1943 to work on the screenplay of Double Indemnity with Billy Wilder in part because Wilder was impressed by The High Window. Wilder and Chandler's collaboration was a landmark in film noir and marked a change in the climate of censorship in Hollywood, and thus cleared the way for the filming of The Big Sleep in 1944 and its release in 1946. The High Window was filmed again in 1946 and released in 1947 as The Brasher Doubloon, starring George Montgomery as Philip Marlowe. A fine document from an early point in Chandler's decidedly ambivalent relationship to Hollywood 4to. 4 pp. typed on rectos only, signed by Chandler on page 4, dated and notarized below with raised seal. Leaves punched in left margin for ring binder, fine. For Chandler, cf. MacShane, The Life of Raymond Chandler (1976). Provenance: 20th Century-Fox [Attributes: Signed Copy]

El Jardin de Senderos Que Se Bifurcan [The Garden of the Forking Paths]

Buenos Aires: Sur. (1942). Borges' first major work of fiction, "The Garden of the Forking Paths." This is the first publication of these stories later published in his acclaimed volume Ficciones, in 1944. Inscribed by Borges to his sister, Norah, and her son: "Para Norah y Miguel, con el cari o y la simpatía de/ Jorge Luis Borges." Norah Borges illustrated her brother's first book of poems, Luna de Enfrente, in 1923. Miguel added his ownership signature to this book in 1995; wrappers slightly darkened, particularly along the spine; front joint professionally reinforced; a very good copy of this extremely fragile, and extremely important volume, in the pale blue wrappers typical of Sur publications of the time. Borges's fictions -- of which these are the first manifestation to be published in a book -- were arguably the most influential literary writings of the 20th century, bringing the sensibilities and experimentation of the avant garde to mainstream literature, and expanding the possibilities of fiction for all the succeeding generations of his literary descendants. An attractive copy and scarce thus, and virtually unheard of as an association copy, particularly such a close familial one. In an attractive quarter leather custom clamshell box. First Edition. Softcover.

The Fun of the Fair (Nijni Novgorod, 1913 e.v.).

The O.T.O., London 1942 - Original thick paper wrappers. Large 8vo. viii + 24pp (+ ivpp). Frontis portrait. Printed at the Chiswick Press on fine mold-made paper. This edition limited to 200 signed and numbered copies. This copy is numbered but NOT signed, as common. Crowley's reminiscences - in verse - of the bawdy spectacle of the great festival at Nijni Novgorod (Russia) which he visited in 1913. Some copies, as this, also included and errata slip tipped onto the half-title and two additional poems - "Political Vote. B----y Secret" & "Landed Gentry" tipped in at the rear. Crowley had tried to get these poems, both of which are critical of "the establishment," included in the body of the book, but had been rebuffed by several printers who feared that they would be prosecuted for publishing anything that might be considered anti-government propaganda under the strict wartime censorship laws. Eventually Crowley hit upon the ploy of having a mainstream printer - his old favourite the Chiswick Press - produce the books, and having the "dubious poems" duplicated by a jobbing printer (the 1940's equivalent of a copy-shop). He then had the extra poems tipped into the rear of some of the copies of the books. The copies like this, with the extra poems, tend to be those that were distributed in Britain during Crowley's lifetime (which were also usually - although as this copy shows - not always signed by him). Overlapping wrappers a trifle creased at the edges, as always, otherwise Fine. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Cloth moderately soiled, front panel bright & clean, covers fore edges slightly bowed vertically, light foxing on endpapers with partially erased inked name on front pastedown, text generally quite crisp & clean with just a few scattered foxing spots.         1942 HANDWRITTEN ORIGINAL WORLD WAR II MANUSCRIPT SCIENTIFIC STUDY OF GERMAN AVIATION, ROCKETRY AND ROCKET THEORY

Germany 1942 - [Original Manuscript] GERMAN ROCKETRY. In German. 164 pages loose in old folder. Highly technical writings, mathematical equations and analysis, graphs, charts etc. Signed Hilly Richter 24 January, 1942. Entitled "Auftriebs verteilung Richtung flugeltiefe auf grund der theorie der dunnen Profile," relating to theories of lift distribution and flight direction. The folder labeled "Rakete Theorie". Clearly, the date of the manuscript would put in squarely in the period of World War II and the great German advances in aeronautics. Civilian and military efforts in the field of rocketry in all other nations combined paled in comparison with the strides made in Germany, where the first A-4 was tested with complete success on October 3, 1942. The very first A-4 rocket reached an altitude of 50 miles and flew a distance of 120 miles. The A-4, later renamed V-2, would go on to lay the cornerstone of modern rocketry. Fascinating World War II relic and collectible of significance. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Ballistik *With German Swastika Ink Stamp Atop Front Board*

Berlin, Germany: Walter De Gruyter & Co.. Hardcover. 267 pages. Index. Text in German. An advanced treatise on ballistics from the second world war era. This copy highly noteworthy for its apparent provenance from the wartime library of a technical institute in Stuttgart as evinced by identical black inkstamps in the upper right corner of the front board, front free endpaper and title pages respectively. This circular stamp depicts an eagle, wings spread, atop a swastika. Around the stamp is lettering which appears to be the name of a technical institute in Stuttgart. A four-digit handwritten book number appears atop each stamp and at foot of backstrip. The swastika portion of the stamp on front endpaper and title page has been neatly covered over in black marker. No other markings. Light external wear to beige boards. Crease to lower corner of front free endpaper and first several pages. Binding sound. It is left to our imaginations to wonder how many German trainers and students learned from this book, and the impact they had on hostilities with the Allies. Author was a prominent mathematician and member of the Nazi party. A quality copy of this important historical item. . Good. 1942. Zweite Auflage (Second Edition).

        The Great Hunger.

Dublin, Cuala Press. 1942. - Limited edition; 8vo; original linen-backed blue paper boards and glassine dust jacket, upper cover lettered in black, paper label on spine. Edition of 250, this is number 17. One of the great achievements of twentieth-century Irish literature. Clair Wills in her study of Ireland during the Second World War, states that the poem'excoriates the spiritual, sexual and emotional poverty of rural Ireland in the 1930s and 1940s. Kavanagh began the poem in 1941, while the Russian front was the main focus of the war. Wills believes that Kavanagh was drawing an analogy between the struggle of the Irish peasant and that of the Russian. Fine, with two spots to the edge of the text block in a good only jacket with loss to back panel. A nice copy of a scarce book.
