An original painting by Mona Thrasher of Inuvik.

This framed canvas measures about 34 inches in height, about 28 inches wide. It is a portrait of an aged Inuit woman wearing a parka. Condition is very good - there is one small perforation in the upper part of the canvas, but it is not near to and does not affect the image. Mona Thrasher was born in 1942 in a bush camp between Aklavik and present day Inuvik. At a young age, a hunting accident left her partially deaf and mute. Mona is a self taught artist, with no formal training . At the age of 18, she was approached by Father Adam to paint the Stations of the Cross in the Roman Catholic Church in Inuvik (the Igloo Church). Even though she had never done such a large project, Father Adam knew she was capable. It took Mona just three months to paint all 14 Stations, which still hang in the church today. Since then she has created many paintings, mainly using the colours Blue and White because she believes they best represent the traditional Inuit life - the sky, water, snow and ice. She hopes that through her art, people get a better understanding of the North and its people.

Once they are non - Aryan, once they are not Fritzes?away with them! ?         Collection of WWII Correspondence: Letters to and from Six Servicemen from Illinois

[Forrest, Illinois]: August 1942 - November 1946 (most 1944-1946) 156 letters and two envelope fragments. Near fine, with a few letters dampstained, usual soiling and offsetting to the envelopes, wear where opened, else very bright and clean. This collection of correspondence was carefully collected, arranged and preserved by Virginia Huber, a young secretary from Illinois. The letters sent from the soldiers are grouped according to the writer, arranged in reverse chronological order and held together with simple string bindings. The soldiers' letters are primarily written on blank leaves or military stationary, and are housed in the envelopes they were originaly mailed in. Virginia, apparently careful in the planning of her letters, preserved typed drafts of her letters and not the handwritten copies she sent to her enlisted correspondents. Nearly all of her letters are printed on thin carbon paper, although a few greeting card mock-ups are on cardstock. Virginia's letters to the men are also grouped by addressee, arranged in reverse chronological order, and housed in cardstock paper folders printed with each correspondents' name, hometown, and station location. Virginia Huber, who was active in her local church and community activities, wrote to several enlisted servicemen whom she knew from her hometown of Forrest, IL. Because they were united by geographical location rather than branch of service, the soldier letters included here represent a wide range of American military experiences during WWII. Virginia, whose beauty was noted by nearly all of her correspondents, was also a notably vivacious and spunky writer. Related People: Huber, Virginia - Secretary from Forrest, IL, and arranger of this collection Funk, Norman - Naval airman from Roanoke, IL, stationed in Jacksonville, FL Funk, Ray - Army serviceman from Gridley, IL, stationed in Camp Crowder, MO and Camp Polk, LA Hartman, Art - Army serviceman from Strawn, IL, stationed in Peoria, IL & Camp Lee, VA Johnson, Roy - Naval serviceman from IL Sauder, Howard - Army sergeant from Roanoke, IL, stationed in the Aleutian Islands Steffen, Albert - Naval serviceman from Elgin, IL, stationed in Okinawa, Japan I. Letters from Six Soldiers to Virginia 1. Howard Sauder (11 August 1942 - 30 December 1945) Twenty-eight hand written letters written to Virginia Huber. Howard was one of Virginia's longest-lasting correspondents. Stationed in the Aleutian Islands, Howard was often highly isolated and many of his letters to Virginia express the sense of disconnect that plagued him. Notably, because of the location of his station, he was privy to both American and Japanese radio broadcasts and remarked on the curiousness of thinking of the Allied troops as criminal. 2. Raymond Johnson (23 December 1943 - 22 February 1944) Two handwritten letters and one copied letter written to Virginia Huber. Although she kept no record of any correspondence to him, Virginia's friendship and Ray's association of her with his home, and indeed all that he had left behind, provided him a strong sense of comfort. As Ray wrote in his letter from February 22, 1944: "You never miss home till you a long long way from it." 3. Art Hartman (3 January 1944 - 20 November 1946) Twenty-two handwritten and typed letters written to Virginia Huber and one empty envelope addressed to Virginia. Art and Virginia's close friendship is evident in the familiarity of Art's letters; in addition to asking about her love life and telling her about his dates, Art includes several cutouts from military newspapers - often the joke sections. Notably, Art was stationed at the newly rebuilt Camp Lee, which is now better known as Fort Lee. 4. Albert Steffen (6 November 1944 - 29 July 1946) Fourteen handwritten letters addressed to Virginia Huber. Although he boasted of several excursions to the Japanese mainland, Albert primarily describes his adventures on Okinawa, which he calls "the rock," and the many servicemen he met who also hail from his hometown. In addition to his letters, Virginia preserved. Near Fine.

GO DOWN, MOSES And Other Stories.

Random House [1942], New York - 8vo. This copy is inscribed by Faulkner on the front free endpaper and signed by him on the title page as was his custom. "To A. I. Bezzerides. Many happy returns. Bill Faulkner. 9 Aug. 1945." Faulkner and Bezzerides met in Hollywood at about the time "Go Down, Moses" was published, though this Faulkner novel was not among those of his books to make it to the screen. The two were part of the Warner Bros. stable of screenwriters and collaborated on more than a few movie scripts, some of which were filmed, some not. Faulkner, who was struggling financially to get by, lived with Bezzerides and his family during this period and was driven to the studio during the week by the younger man. When Faulkner periodically became incapacitated by his alcoholic binges, Bezzerides saw to it that he received medical intervention. This copy may have been inscribed to his by-then good friend when Bezzerides visited Faulkner in Mississippi. All this is documented in Faulkner biographies. Bezzerides was himself a published author, two of whose novels were made into Warner Bros. film noirs -- "The Long Haul" and "Thieves Highway." Provenance: The A.I. Bezzerides estate. A very good copy in a somewhat worn dust jacket, whose use can be seen as endearing if not ennobling. An association copy of the first rank. Housed in a custom-made quarter morocco clamshell box.         Worksheets on Morale. Seminar in Psychological Problems of Morale

Published by Harvard University, Department of Psychology. 1942 - 152 leaves, complete in 15 sections, ca. 90,000 words. (Two copies of this work are located via WorldCat: Harvard and Illinois State University). *Provenance: OSS (Office of Strategic Services, the precursor to the CIA) Library via the Library of Congress. *This work by Gordon Allport and Henry A. Murray contains several sections on what has been recently hailed as the earliest psychological profile of Adolf Hitler. The sections include: (1) Aim of Seminar, 2 lvs; (2) Selected Bibliography, 1941, 3 lvs; (3) Notes on the Definition of Morale, 3+3lvs; (4) Determinants of Good and Bad Morale, 18 lvs; (5) Historical Trends of National Socialist Ideology, 14 lvs; (6) Hitler the Man, Notes for a Case Study, 22 lvs; (7) Education in Nazi Germany, 8 lvs; (9) Strategy and Tactics for anti-Nazi propaganda, 10 lvs; (10) Democratic vs. Totalitarian Morale in Groups, 5 lvs; (11) Standards of Democratic Morale-Building in the U.S., 6 lvs; (12) Civilian Morale Building Techniques, 7pp; (13) Psychology of Influence (Education Persuasion) Applied to Morale Building in America, 16 lvs; (14) Long-term Aspects of Democratic Morale-Building, 7 lvs; (15) Analysis and Execution of Propaganda Campaigns, 18 lvs. The portions of this publication concerning the psychological profile of Hitler seem to pre-date the very recent re-publication of Murray's very obscure 1943 work again published for the OSS on the psychological composition of Hitler. The date of publication of these sheets is somewhat uncertain, although there are no references dated after 1941. These sheets were obviously not intended for a wide distribution. It is interesting to note the circulation card in the pocket at the rear of this work as it bears the signature of David N. Yerkes. I spoke with Mr. Yerkes a dozen years ago and inquired after his interest in this work (taken out on 7 June 1944 and returned 14 June 1944), and he told the story that Henry Murray was a pupil of his father's, who was Robert Yerkes, former president of the American Psychological Association, Professor of Psychology at Harvard and innovator in the use of psychological testing and training of American servicemen during WWI. This work by Gordon Allport and Henry A. Murray contains several sections on what has been recently hailed as the earliest psychological profile of Adolf Hitler. Evidently there were only 30 copies of this report made; it is exceptionally rare. *The portions of this publication concerning the psychological profile of Hitler seem to pre-date the very recent re-publication of Murray's very obscure 1943 work again published for the OSS on the psychological composition of Hitler.         The Art of Walt Disney.

New York: Macmillan Company, 1942. First edition. Quarto, original tan cloth. Humorously inscribed by Walt Disney on the frontispiece: "To Clyde, Haven't you any better use for your money? Walt." Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a few small chips and tears. Wonderfully illustrated throughout from photographs and drawings. Art critic Robert Feild's purpose in writing this book was "to present the art of Walt Disney as a growing force in our midst." Formal criticism of cartoon art was so entirely new at the time that "we have no standards by which to judge the art of today, no terminology with which to discuss, for instance, the work of a man like Walt Disney? How is one to write about Walt Disney if his art, which is that of the Animated Sound Picture, is to most people still a mystery while the artist himself is an enigma invariably associated with a Mouse?

Canada and Newfoundland Their Natural and Industrial Resources. During the World War...

London.. Dated in plate 1942. Ca. late 1940s.. Color pictorial / pictographic map, 19 1/4 x 29 inches (49 x 73cm) on sheet 20 x 29 3/4 inches. Originally issued folded, now mounted on archival paper; tiny pinhead size infill at central fold intersection, short tear into lower right border now scarcely visible. Very good bright condition. One of a series of maps of the colonies highlighting their rich resources which was designed by MacDonald Gill in 1942 for the British Government; the poster was then issued over a period of several years with changing text in the decorative circle at lower left. This particular copy was issued in the immediate post-War years, the text reading: "During the World War the Dominion of Canada and her Atlantic neighbour, Newfoundland, threw all their material resources into the struggle. Canada's output of munitions, arms, ships, metal and food, was made possible by tremendous industrial growth. With these increased resources Canada moves forward to a great industrial future with added strength to help defend the peace." While the design emphasis is on clarity in visually portraying the wealth of resources, Gill's superior aesthetic sensibility is evident in the brilliant color, use of lettering and attractive design features such as the stylised steam from the boats off shore and the compass rose. A huge North West Territories stretches from the Yukon to the Hudson Bay and beyond the Arctic Circle; the Coast of Labrador is located above Quebec. The rich mineral wealth of Canada is clear from the colored symbols, with several marked in the north as "not yet developed." At lower left: "Printed in England by A. C. Ltd. 51-9322." At lower right: "O.P.D. 39/219/5." .
