The King of the Golden River. Illustrated by Arthur Rackham.

      - London: Harrap, 1932. 8vo. 48pp. With 4 color plates and 15 black and white illustrations. Original full limp vellum, titles and decoration to upper board gilt, top edge gilt, housed in a paper slipcase with printed label. A fine copy. Limited to 570 numbered copies signed by Rackham. Rackham's critical reputation waxes and wanes over the decades like that of many, perhaps most, artists, but the undying appeal of his book illustrations for generation after generation of wide-eyed children remains constant. His Alice and Peter Pan are immortal, his ghosts and goblins inimitable, his trees and landscapes uniquely imaginative in ways that people of any age can respond to. His art utterly defines an era of children's book illustration in the way that Cruikshank and Greenaway did in their eras or Sendak did in ours. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

[Photo Albums]: Nazi Officer Training. Three Volumes

Germany. 1932-1938. Three albums. 1. Oblong quarto measuring 10" x 12.5" with paper boards; 2. string-tied oblong quarto measuring 8.5" x 12.5" tan cloth over paper boards; 3. small quarto measuring 9.5" x 8" textured tan and blue cloth. Together they contain 412 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1.5" x 1.75" and 4.5" x 7", some with captions in German. Very good or better albums with some rubbing with near fine photographs.A collection of photographs contained in three albums of a German Wehrmacht soldier, referred to only as Conrad, beginning in 1932, during the voluntary years of the army before Hitler enforced conscription. The photos show a combination of leisure activities, including sailing, hiking, and going to the orchestra, as well as army training. The first album is the most heavily captioned of the three and begins with photos of the orchestra while Conrad was attending the 1932 Schutz festival, a celebration of the music of German composer, Heinrich Schutz. Following these photos are images of men hiking and skiing a summit in either Germany or Austria. These images show the men posing with ropes and walking sticks, seemingly experienced climbers.Conrad was also an avid sailor and is seen throughout the albums with friends boating in the North Sea. One section of photos shows the smiling German on a trip in May of 1932. They spent time on the beach and taking hikes. One group of photos shows Conrad and a young woman jumping off the docks and swimming. Other photos show rural Germany and Austria including various farms, with a woman tending to pigs and riding her motorcycle on a dirt road.By the fall of 1932 Conrad is seen participating in military training exercises. The men, shown on horseback practicing jumps and maneuvers, are smiling and happy in what appear to be officer uniforms. The Nazi party was gaining momentum and would soon take over German politics completely and these soldiers were seemingly early proponents of the new regime. He included pictorial postcards of early photos of Der Fuhrer in his albums. One photo shows a car of high ranking Nazi officers with swastika armbands driving past a crowd giving the Nazi salute. The albums continue to show army training along with the soldier's quarters and uniformed men. They are seen sitting in trenches, posing in fields, smoking cigarettes, and marching. There are numerous photos of officers, one of whom is saluting while riding a bicycle, as well as groups of men training and marching along the German countryside, participating in target practice, marching in water, and running across fields. Conrad's fellow soldiers also had a company puppy which is seen in the arms of several officers, as well as in his cage.An extensive collection of photographs detailing the early days of Hitler's army and the carefree life of a German officer outside of his training. .

Twenty Thousand Years in Sing Sing by the Warden of Sing Sing Prison.

Ray Long & Richard R. Smith, Inc. 1932 - Splendidly bound in bright black finely woven cloth stamped brightly in silver and red on the front boards and on the spine. Very clean and tight. In a striking dust jacket designed with prison bar motifs by Samuel Schaeffer. With the original price of $3.00 at the bottom of the inside front flap; and with light chipping and some small pieces missing at the top and bottom of the spine ends. Note: This copy has two dedication pages, one laid in and signed by "Lewis Lawes" in purple ink and underscored. The printed dedication reads: "To those tens of thousands of my former wards who have justified my faith in human nature." The signed dedication page fits seamlessly over the original dedication page, but has not been glued in. A very handsome collectible copy and rather scarce with Warden Lewis Lawes' signature. Lawes was Warden of Sing Sing from 1920-1941. This book was the basis for Warner Brothers movie staring Spencer Tracy and Bette Davis and directed by Michael Curtiz. During the early sound era, the subject of prison reform was rarely addressed in Hollywood movies until the release of I Am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang (1932) which generated a storm of controversy and sparked public interest. After that, the topic became a subgenre of the crime melodramas so popular at the time and, not surprisingly, most of the best entries were from Warner Bros. who specialized in contemporary films with urban settings, often based on true events. This was particularly true of 20,000 Years in Sing Sing (1932) which was based on the memoirs of Lewis E. Lawes, the former warden of Sing Sing. Lawes began his career as a nineteen-year-old prison guard and rose through the ranks to his eventual appointment as governor of Sing Sing. Like his predecessor, Thomas M. Osborne, Lawes was committed to educating the press and the public about the harsh realities of prison life and programs that could successfully rehabilitate prisoners. Many of his experiences would serve as source material for other popular prison dramas such as Over the Wall (1938), You Can't Get Away with Murder (1939), and Invisible Stripes (1939). Because the studio so valued Lawes's involvement in 20,000 Years in Sing Sing he was given final approval of the script and the finished film. In exchange, Lawes arranged for director Michael Curtiz and his cast and crew to have access to Sing Sing where several scenes were shot using actual prisoners - a rare instance of on-location filming for a major studio during that era.         Urne Buriall and the Garden of Cyrus... with Thirty Drawings by Paul Nash. Edited with an Introduction by John Carter.

London :[Curwen Press for] Cassell and Co. Ltd. La Belle Sauvage. 1932. Limited Edition, no. 39 of 215 copies on J. Barcham Green's handmade paper. Folio, xx, 146 pp, 14 full-page plates and 18 in the text, collotypes coloured through stencils, bound by Nevetts Ltd to a design by Paul Nash in vellum with a large inlay of brown morocco with two vellum inlays and tooled with a gilt design of an urn and a lozenge, the lower cover with the same design but substituting brown morocco for the vellum inlays, a.e.g., inscribed in ink on f.f endpaper "Tom Balston /John Carter / 1933", preserved in the original cloth slip case, fine condition. These illustrations represent the crowning achievement of the Curwen Press's use of the pochoir technique and Urne Buriall is widely accepted as Paul Nash's masterpiece in book illustration. It is one of the finest illustrated books produced in 20th century England. It was published during the height of the depression when there was little market for de-luxe editions and consequently very few copies were sold. The rest remained in unbound sheets until, in 1950, Desmond Flower took them to Stanley Bray of Sangorski & Sutcliffe to be bound to Nash's original design. The original Nevetts binding is exceedingly rare; auctions records for the last 30 years show eighteen Sangoski & Sutcliffe bindings but only one by Nevetts.

Around the World in Eight Days. INSCRIBED BY WILEY POST TO LEGENDARY PIONEER AVIATOR BILLY PARKER - LICENSE #44

New York: Rand McNally & Co, 1932. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Dust Jacket. Octavo. Inscribed by Wiley Post, thus: "To Billy Parker / Whose flying I admired / long before I dreamed of / flying myself / With very best wishes / Wiley Post / 12-8-32." Wiley Hardeman Post (1898-1935) was the first pilot to fly solo around the world. He worked as a test pilot in high altitude flying, developed one of the first pressue suits and discovered the jet stream. Wiley Post and American humorist, Will Rogers were both killed on August 15, 1935, when Post's aircraft crashed on takeoff from a lagoon near Point Barrow, Alaska. Will D. (Billy) Parker (1899-1981) became known as "the Boy Aviator" and carried private pilot's license number 44. As a high school student in Ft. Collins, CO, he built a glider, which flew to an altitude of 300 feet. Then he built a pusher (similar to the Wright Brothers plane), with a motorcycle engine, but it couldn't fly well above several thousand feet, because of altitudes in Colorado (thinner air and insufficient horsepower). His mother helped him to purchase a 50 horsepower French Gnome engine - thus Billy Parker became a professional pilot. As a college student in Ft. Collins, he performed at state and county fairs, as a stunt pilot. He barnstormed in the 1920's, worked as a test pilot, and from 1926 to 1966, he managed the aviation division of Phillips Petroleum. He was President of the Early Birds, an exclusive group who flew before December 17, 1916 and included such members as Wiley Post, Willard, Fokker and Morriss. Parker and Joe Bartles set up an aircraft factory at Dewey, Oklahoma and built airplanes under the name "Dewey Aircraft Company." Parker held the 44th pilot's license issued in America. He invented the variable-pitch propeller and he built a half-dozen planes himself. In World War I, Parker ran an aviation school to train pilots for the military. He continued to fly the two pushers he built in 1912 and 1914 at events, well into the 1960's. Light tape residue in the gutter of frontis.

        Stamboul Train.

London: William Heinemann, Ltd.,, 1932. Octavo. Original black cloth, titles to spine gilt. Housed in a green quarter morocco solander box. Contents occasionally marked, fore edges buffed, spine rolled and slightly faded. An excellent copy. First edition, first impression, first issue. The character of a rather pompous and self regarding author appears in the central portion of this novel. He is named on pages 77, 78, 82, 98, and 131 as one "Q. C. Savory". J. B. Priestley who had read a review copy became convinced that Savory was based none too flatteringly upon him. Priestley threatened a libel suit and worse still threatened to leave Heinemann for whom he was one of their big names. Charles Evans called Greene and as he recalls in A Sort of Life, "made it clear to me that if Heinemann were going to lose an author, they would much prefer to lose me." So changes were made and two sections were reprinted. The original sheets were as yet unbound and so no pages needed cancelling. Very few copies of the uncorrected text were ever circulated and fewer still survive today. We know of a small handful of examples.
