London; Bentley Motors Ltd 1931., 1931. Reprint. Octavo, pp 35, [1]. Fold-out greasing diagram. Original blue cloth with black titles to upper board. Covers soiled and creased with wear to spine and corners; a slightly shaken copy with weak inner hinges but holding. A few oily fingermarks but no annotation or inscriptions. Overall a well-used but good copy. The classic Bentley Three Litre was a car chassis manufactured by Bentley and made available to individual customers' coachbuilders for completion of the bodywork. Larger than many contemporary racing vehicles, the Bentley's power made up for its weight and models won prizes throughout the 1920s; rival Bugatti memorably described it as "the fastest lorry in the world". A highly prestigious model aimed at the very top of the market, it gained an enviable reputation and customers included the Duke of Kent. Scarce.

M.V. Kriukov, ed.
Moscow: Izd-vo Mosoblispolkoma, 1931. Oblong octavo 17.5x24.5 cm., wrappers, 56pp. This series appeared in three parts, with the second and third numbers in the present issue. These were design entries for The Palace of The Soviets, initially conceived in 1922 by condemning the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. It invited an international competition, and drew on many luminaries of modernist design and over 160 entries were submitted, from avant-gardists to Neoclassicists. The first series illustrates the international entries and numbers 2-3 are from Soviet architects. All eventually were rejected in favor of a design by Boris Iofan with additions by Shchukov and Gelfreikh with Stalinist pretensions; even that lay dormant until groundbreaking in 1939 and lower walls erected, but war changed everything and after decades of neglect finally the space was rebuilt as The Cathedral from 1995 to 2000. No versions of the Palace ever achieved realization. Here we have 16 design entries including three from Iofan's office; all the entries are remarkable. This was one of the last design competitions in the USSR that gave architects free reign in their work. An important document of constructivist architecture in the USSR. Rare, OCLC locates only one holding in North America, with six microfolm holdings otherwise. Cover worn and sunbleached, interior near fine. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

JOHN BETJEMAN
The James Press, London [1931] 1st Edition. Good Hardcover First edition of Betjemans scarce first book, published by his Oxford friend, poet Edward James (his first notable publication). Slim 8vo. 57pp. Black and red striped paper-covered boards with large illustrated paper title label to the upper board, this last lightly soiled. Printed on two different coloured paperstocks and illustrated with drawings including six by de Cronin Hastings which express the beauty of suburbia far more than the verse (from the authors note) with decorative borders. The corner tips rubbed with a light crease to the rear board and a touch of light wear to the board edges in one or two places. Some light toning to the front free endpaper and pastedown, and some fox spotting to the rear endpaper and pastedown. The binding tender at one gathering (pp28-29). Lacking the backstrip (as, alas, is fairly common with this notoriously fragile production). Tiny dealer plate to the base of the rear pastedown. A good, bright copy of an uncommon book. VAN de WATER, Frederic
Doubleday, Doran & Company, Garden City, 1931. First edition. Fine in near fine dustwrapper but for a small chip on the spine. "The true story of Captain Bill McCoy of the Tomoka, the founder of Rum Row and King of Rum Runners." Inscribed by the subject of the book: "To Bob Davis, the man who suggested that this yarn be put in print. Bill McCoy." McCoy was probably the most famous of the rum runners, who would bring liquor to the edge of American territorial waters and offload it onto small craft in order to elude the authorities. Rum runners were famous for watering the liquor that they illegally imported during Prohibition. McCoy apparently never did so, and handled only high quality brands, hence popularizing the phrase "The Real McCoy." Scarce either signed or in jacket. Belousov, V. Ia., editor, and E. N. Nekrasov, designer
Moscow-Leningrad: Gosudarstvennoe nauchno-tekhnicheskoe izdatel'stvo, 1931. Oblong quarto (26 × 38 cm). Original photo-illustrated wrappers designed by E. N. Nekrasov; 206, [2] pp. Wear to spine extremities; light overall wear; still good or better. Rare work on the large-scale development of cheaply constructed wooden modular homes, which was undertaken by the Gosplan's Construction Sector to accompany the ongoing forced collectivization in the Soviet countryside. The numerous detailed plans, floor plans, and layouts document various normed houses that would replace individual family dwellings and serve as larger co-habitations in the spirit of collective living. The book was also part of an effort to revolutionize and speed up Soviet construction everywhere, by introducing simplified constructions and normed homes and building segments. Also new was the attempt to rely entirely on wooden parts in industrial dimensions. The numerous construction systems outlined in the book include the "DK" system developed by INNORS, the system of Rosstroi VSNKh RSFSR, and the system of Tsentrozhilsoiuz. Strikingly designed throughout in the constructivist style by E. N. Nekrasov, who also designed two issues of the journal Sovremennaia arkhitektura (SA). As of January 2020, KVK and OCLC show a single copy, at the NYPL. No copies traced at auction or in either Western or Russian book trades. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

[Click Below for Full Description]

The Adventures of Mickey Mouse. Book I. Philadelphia: David McKay Company, [1931]. First edition - Trial Copy? Octavo (8 3/16 x 6 inches; 208 x 152 mm.). [32] pp., including title-page and dedication. Profusely illustrated with color drawings. Publishers color pictorial boards, color pictorial endpapers. A wonderful copy of the first major Disney story book. We believe this to be a 'trial copy' as the text block measures 8 3/16 x 6 inches; 208 x 152 mm. compared to 7 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches; 190 x 140 mm., on all other copies that we have seen over the years. Every page is illustrated in color with Mickey and the gang in this early and significant presentation of their antics and personality development. In fact, this book includes the first reference to Donald Duck, who didn't become a real Disney character until 1934. Lang, Fritz (director, screenwriter); Thea von Harbou (screenwriter); Peter Lorre (starring)
Illustrierter Film-Kurier, Vienna. Vintage Austrian program for the 1931 German film. Lang's first sound film, Peter Lorre's breakthrough role, and the film Lang considered to be his masterpiece-an assertion that has found much agreement since. The only second piece of ephemera from the film we have ever offered. Text in German. Issue No. 262 of "Illustrierter Film-Kurier," one of the oldest European film magazines, which ran weekly from 1929 to 1956. Like its German counterpart, "Film-Kurier," each issue focused on a single film and used a gravure process to reproduce images from the film, making for striking images and design. 6 x 9 inches. Six pages, saddle stitched. Ink annotations throughout, seemingly regarding layout, affecting a bit of text but no images. Very Good plus with a faint horizontal crease and light toning to the wrappers. Criterion Collection 30. Grant Germany. Godard, Histoires de cinema. Ebert I. Eureka Masters of Cinema 9. ANTHONY POWELL
Duckworth, London, 1931. First Edition (first printing). 8vo. 271pp. Finely rebound in blue leather with five raised bands and gilt lettering, rule, borders and decorations. With marbled endpapers and a gilt top edge. Just a hint of very light fox spotting to the fore edge, and to very occasional leaf margins, impacting no text. A tiny crease to the upper corners of two leaf margins. A super fine binding of the author's most uncommon first novel, written whilst he was working for the publisher Gerald Duckworth. Powell estimated that circa 2,000 copies of this first impression were printed. His advance was a mighty £25 but with the added bonus that he was to oversee the entire publication: "The production of the book itself - with the natural admonition that everything about it must be cheap - [was] left in my own hands. I think the final result not discreditable, showing the extent to which a volume of decent appearance could be achieved at that date without undue expense; something Duckworth's did not always being about in their list" - 'Messengers of Day'.
