Woolf (Virginia)
Shun'yodo, 1931. FIRST JAPANESE EDITION, title-page tissue-guarded with Hogarth Press device to centre, frontispiece and 3 further plates, the facing pages browned, a few typographic corrections in black ink to the introductory material (perhaps by the translator), one small instance of underlining in red pencil (a few words) pp. [ii], 359, [10], original orange boards with abstract rendering of playing card design in white, pink and yellow to both boards, backstrip lettered in black, a little dustiness and a touch of rubbing to extremities, the edges browned, the endpapers partially so, dustjacket with fading to backstrip panel and a touch at head of rear panel, shallow chipping to extremities, very good. Inscribed by the translator on the flyleaf, to the author Shumuta Natsuo. The first of the author's novels to be translated in full into Japanese. In his Preface, the translator summarises his conception of the author's importance - and that of this particular work - in contradistinction to James Joyce, hitherto the chief modernist import, largely on the grounds of the greater attention given to gender politics. The dustjacket carries a striking playing-card design that is effective in its simplicity.

Tsetkin, I.
Moscow: Knigotsentr OGIZa, 1931. 76, [4] pp.: ill. 19,5x13,5 cm. In original illustrated wrappers. The wrappers and the title pages are restored. Overall a good copy. First and only edition. One of 4050 copies. The abridged list of architects and artists, associated with the book, include Kirill Zdanevich, Naum Segal', Lavinsky brothers and Grigoriy Zamskii. Extremely rare and richly illustrated manual on how to display books both inside and outside of Soviet bookstores. The book is divided into two relevant sections. The first one started from the outer look: the edition explained how to design window display and signboards to attract passers. The author drew attention to different types of internal display furniture: store counters, shelves and racks. Among them is a book display invented by A. Abramov that was commonly used for book exhibiting and displaying. Simple in construction, it was presented in a technical drawing and photographs together with assembly instructions. Other photographs depict examples of how to arrange books in general and how to prepare a store for thematic display (on the May Day, for instance). The second section is more interesting: it is dedicated to pop-up bookstalls, mobile bookstores on wheels or sleigh as well as even wandering booksellers. The edition features a range of constructivist projects and scale models of street stationary and mobile book displays that were subjects of competitions between artists. Almost all bookstores by this time were centralized and all designs included Gosizdat (OGIZ) publisher's mark. Apart from that, they … [Click Below for Full Description]

BAKER, Joséphine; Félix Achille de la Cámara; Pepito Abatino.
Paris: Les editions Isis, 1931. Paris: Les editions Isis,, 1931. Octavo "en carré". Original white illustrated wrappers, titles in white, red, and black on pink ground over black and red portrait of Baker. Portrait of Joséphine and 5 half-tone plates, decorated initials, all by Georges de Pogédaïeff. Wraps a little rubbed, sympathetic light restoration to the spine, joints, and to minor splits to the leading edge of the text-block, which is lightly toned throughout, very good. First and limited edition, number 33 of 250 copies printed on Vergé Baroque paper. An excellent copy with the signatures of all three "authors"; it is inscribed in lilac ink by de la Cámara on the imprint page: "Á Monsieur & Madame Jan Melle avec toutes nos sympathies, Paris, Août '31, La Cámara", with the signatures of Baker and Abatino interposed between the dateline and the signature."In her 1931 novella Mon Sang dans tes veines (My Blood in Your Veins), recounted to and adapted by Felix de la Cámara and Pepito Abatino [Baker's husband and manager], Joséphine devises the character of Joan (also called Jo), a young mulatto girl whose mother is the maid in the home of a Boston millionaire, Ira Cushman Barclay, and his son, Fred. Joan selflessly saves Fred's life through a blood transfusion. The primal Baker and the new saintly image meld in Mon Sang dans tes veines. Baker continued to develop this image as part of her humanitarian self-sacrifice in World War II and in the domestic experiment with her adopted Rainbow Tribe at Les Milandes" (Bennetta Jules-Rosette, Josephine Baker in Art and Life: Th … [Click Below for Full Description]

Fermi, Enrico; Giuseppe Occhialini and others
1931. Fermi, Enrico (1901-54) et al. Archive of scientific correspondence to Bruno Rossi (1905-93) plus related materials; calendar of archive available on request. 68 items total. 1930-36. Various sizes. Rust-stains from paper clips on some items, a few minor chips and marginal tears, but very good. An extraordinary archive of scientific correspondence, written to Italian experimental physicist Bruno Rossi, one of the founders of the study of cosmic rays and a major contributor to particle physics. In addition to four letters from Fermi, the archive includes correspondence from Nobel laureates Hans Bethe, Patrick Blackett, John D. Cockcroft, and Emilio Segrč, as well as letters from Lise Meitner, Hans Geiger, Homi J. Bhabha, Yoshio Nichina, and Rossi's student Giuseppe Occhialini. The materials in the archive date from the period 1930 to 1936, the time when Rossi did some of his most important and fruitful work on cosmic radiation. As a young physics professor at the University of Florence, Rossi read Walther Bothe and Werner Kolhörster's 1929 paper announcing the existence of charged cosmic ray particles that could penetrate gold by more than four centimeters-far more than any other form of radiation known at the time. Inspired by this astonishing discovery, Rossi decided to devote his career to studying cosmic radiation. In 1930, using triode vacuum tubes, Rossi invented an electronic coincidence circuit for detecting charged cosmic particles, a vast improvement over the cumbersome apparatus used by Bothe. Rossi and his student Giuseppe Occhialini used the new device, … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: The Studio Limited, 1931. Condition is Very Good, with clean cover, some wear to edges and spine, Neill's own distinctive signature is still dark and clear, looks like it was written in artist's pencil. Binding is tight, hinges have some give to them but they are not split. No other handwriting inside. A few small tears. One double page has Neill's pastel-stained fingerprints on it, which only adds to the value of the book. RARE: The Studio Painting Series: 4. Ships and the Sea. No author credited. 8 tipped in color plates of ships and seascapes, by these artists: Maxfield Armfield, Terrick Williams, Julius Olsson, Bertram Priestman, Frank Brangwyn, Arthur J. W. Burgess, and C.N. Hemy. Published by The Studio Limited (London) and William Edwin Rudge (New York), copyright 1931. 9" x 11" x 34". Pages not numbered, but it is about 50 pp. The inside cover is signed by Neill, in what appears to be thick artist's pencil. Also, there are two double-page spreads that Neill obviously used to hone his skills, as they have numerous charcoal-stained finger smudges. These personalizations greatly increase the interest in and value of the book. John R. Neill was the famed illustrator of nearly all the Oz books written by L. Frank Baum and then after Baum's death, Ruth Plumly Thompson. Neill himself wrote several Oz books after Thompson was finished with the series. I obtained this painting book from John R. Neill's grandson. It had been in Neill's personal library which was extensive, but Neill didn't sign his name in many of the books. This book is a treasure. It was never my in … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: Methuen & Co. Ltd, 1931. London: Methuen & Co. Ltd,, 1931. Signed by both author and illustrator Large octavo. Original green cloth-backed grey boards, white paper label to spine printed in black, spare label bound in at rear. With the dust jacket. Illustrated throughout by E. H. Shepard, folding map at rear. Very light bumping at spine ends, else a near-fine, square and tight copy, in near-fine jacket, spine panel lightly darkened and scuffed, tiny chips at extremities not affecting text, very lightly soiled, unrestored and not price-clipped. Signed limited edition, number 172 of 200 large paper copies signed by both Grahame and Shepard. Wind in the Willows was first published in 1908 with only a frontispiece for illustration, and Shepard, well-known by then for his illustrations of A. A. Milne's Winnie the Pooh series, was asked to illustrate a new edition, following on from Milne's popular adaptation of the book for stage, Toad of Toad Hall. In 1931 Shepard visited Grahame at his house in Pangbourne to make sketches, and at their first meeting Grahame said to him, "I love these little people, be kind to them". Shepard's classic illustrations of anthropomorphized animals render this the most popular version of the book even today.

EINSTEIN, ALBERT; TOLMAN, RICHARD C.; PODOLSKY, BORIS
Lancaster: Physical Review, 1931. First Edition. FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING, IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS of Einstein's paper outlining a thought experiment to suggest that the uncertainty principle requires the acknowledgement of an indeterminate past. "To Heisenberg at the 1920's only the prediction of the future was important, and the mathematical theory assisted him to calculate the probability of the end-state given the initial state: the description of the intermediate development of the system between two objectively recorded or recordable states did not seem to correspond to physical reality. "On the other hand, Einstein, as a critic of quantum physics, did not admit Heisenberg's standpoint, especially that the indeterminacy principle does not refer to the past. In the paper 'Knowledge of Past and Future in Quantum Mechanics' (1931), Einstein proposed an imaginary experiment, in which 'the possibility of describing the past path of one particle would lead to predictions as to the future behavior of a second particle of a kind not allowed in the quantum mechanics.' So Einstein concluded that 'the principle of the quantum mechanics must involve an indeterminacy in the description of past events which is analogous to the indeterminacy in the prediction of future events.' "This should be understood in the context of Einstein's argument against the 'completeness' of quantum physics just in the same way that the purpose of the EPR argument (1935) was to show that the 'completeness' of quantum physics would lead to absurdity. In other words, Einstein did not positively assert t … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]
