O.B. King (Pseudonym of Tiffany Thayer)
Jarrolds. A very unusual copy of the 1933 1st UK edition of this, O.B. King's (Tiffany Thayer's) only published mystery. Not only is this copy INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR on the front free-endpaper BUT IT ALSO APPEARS TO BE A PRE-PUBLICATION COPY, WITH A "SAMPLE COPY--NOT FOR SALE" LABEL PASTED-ON JUST ABOVE O.B. KING'S INSCRIPTION. Solid and VG (very light soiling to the panels, light bumping at the upper tip) in a Good only dustjacket that --sadly-- is missing the upper 50-60% of the rear panel. That portion has been crudely torn off but the spine and front panel (with its wonderful Douglas Moir illustration) are intact and relatively bright and clean. 12mo, 287 pgs. Very Good / Good. Robert Hichens Alfred Hitchcock
Hollywood California: David O. Selznick, 1933. See Item Description for Specific item Condition Notes. Alfred Hitchcock Suspense THE PARADINE CASE Script & Press Archive 1933 to 1961 Alfred Hitchcock Suspense THE PARADINE CASE Script & Press Archive 1933 to 1961 POB#52891 The Paradine Case, a large archive including scripts & materials from early development to promotion. Spans nearly 30 years from novel adaptation at MGM to promotions and trailer editing by Selznick Releasing Company, and much in between. From 1933 to 1961, most material dates from active film production in 1946, 1947, and 1948. Not rich in imagery, though some advertising material is all illustrations. Profound depth and detail in novel-to-screenplay to the final script metamorphosis. A superior, detailed demonstration of Alfred Hitchcock's careful methodology in crafting plot and dialogue. Often overlooked by Hitchcock fans are the many hands and minds who labored to develop his scripts. The script professionals get full recognition in the present archive. . PROVENANCE: Perhaps a business file and possibly discarded from a studio or legal office. That would account for the breadth and multiple copies found in the archive (in other words, a collector would probably not acquire multiple copies of the same script). I acquired the archive from the Estate of Peter Howard of Serendipity Books in Berkeley. Mr. Howard purchased scripts from scouts who probably acquired them from original owners, though that is not established. CONTENTS & NOTES: . 47 items, mostly scripts. e e cummings
New York: EIMI by E E Cummings Hardcover. 8vo. Covici Friede Inc Publishers. 1933. 432 pgs. First Edition/First Printing. Number 1184 of 1381 signed limited copies. Signed by E. E. Cummings on the limitation page. Shelf-wear present to the DJ. Ownership signature present-see picture. Text is clean and free of marks, binding solid, boards clean with no wear present. While sometimes termed a "novel," it is better described as a novelistic travelogue, the diary of a trip to Russia in the 1930s during the rise of the Stalinist government. Despite some contempt for what he witnesses, Cummings's narrator has an effective, occasionally hilarious way of evoking feelings of accord and understanding. As Ezra Pound wrote, Cummings's Soviet Union is laid "out there pellucidly on the page in all its Slavic unfinishedness, in all of its Dostoievskian slobberyness....Does any man wish to know about Russia? 'EIMI'!" A stylistic tour de force, EIMI is a mélange of styles and tones, the prose containing many abbreviations, grammatical and syntactical shifts, typographical devices, compounds, and word coinages. This is Cummings's invigorating and unique voice at its finest, and EIMI is without question one of his most substantial accomplishments. FROM WIKIPEDIA: Edward Estlin Cummings (October 14, 1894 - September 3, 1962), known as E. E. Cummings, with the abbreviated form of his name often written by others in lowercase letters as e e cummings (in the style of some of his poems--see name and capitalization, below), was an American poet, painter, essayist, author, and playwright. His body of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Like many Cummings jackets, quite fragile; this is best of this jacket I have ever seen. Like New, but better than that usually indicates. Published by Covici, Friede (New York: 1933). First edition. Hardcover, bound in yellow cloth, in unclipped dust jacket with original $3.00 price, in protective Mylar wrapper. #1316 of 1381 numbered copies signed by the author. Spine of book and jacket slightly bumped at top and bottom; a few very small tears at jacket edges; else fine. As with many Cummings books, the jacket is quite fragile; still, this is best copy of this jacket I have ever seen. Like New, but really better than what that usually indicates. Firmage A13a. In this experimental prose work, an account of a trip to Russia in 1931, Cummings scrambles standards of punctuation and grammar in an attack on the regimentation of individuals in the Soviet Union. 1933. This book is clean, tight, square with good corners and internally unmarked, but there is a name and date (1/16/34) on the front free end paper. Also a former owner has tipped in on the 'part I Reflation' title page and article from the Wall Street Journal 7/2/35 titled "Commodity Dollar Fallacies" written by the editor E. W. Stagg. It is rubbed at the spine such that the titles appear as blind stamps. There is a very narrow 2" long section of the front board at the spine where the cloth is lifting a bit. It is illustrated with 7 charts and has 137, bright clear pages. The boards are covered with black cloth. It has a single copyright date 1933 and NAP. The full title is "After Reflation What? A short Exposition of "The Commodity Dollar" or How to Stabilize the Price Level" written by Irving Fisher assisted by Herbert W. Fisher. Published by the Adelphi Co. in New York. Florence Heller
1933. On offer is a well-kept teenage girl's five-year diary from the 1930's in New York City. The author of the diary is Florence Heller. She lives in New York City and context suggests that she is 16 years of age when she begins it. The diary covers the years 1933 and 1934 with several more entries scattered of the following 3 years. Her family is Jewish and as owners of a shop, occupy a middle class position in the community. There are no references to the widespread economic woes of the Great Depression and her life seems insulated from its ravages. As you would expect, it is full of the events and names of individuals that made up her busy adolescent life; "My birthday - terrible time - went shopping for a party - bought nothing. Sam Gottlieb called - had a good laugh." [Jan 2, 1933] "Got a call from Benny - he's bringing a friend along for Yetta - hope its someone nice ... Yetta slept over. Benny brought Hal much to my disappointment - Benny is just about crazy over me - Saw Irving while walking with Benny - was a bad girl because I kissed too much."[Feb 24, 1933] "I wonder if I should go with Perry. I'll ask Lillie what to do." [June 24, 1933] "Yetta told me she met a nice fellow in nite school - I ought to go too - maybe I'll meet a nice fellow..." [Oct 23, 1933] "Closed store - Bob came in - said he didn't write because he was ill - I don't particularly care for Bob - We're going out tomorrow with Charlie and a girl." [Jan 13, 1934] The simple reference to the family having a 'colored girl' to do housekeeping hints at the racial and economic divisions in … [Click Below for Full Description]

A nearly complete run in 46 issues (lacking the last 4 issues of 1933; note that the issues from September and October 1932 are bound out of order) of the interwar period German cultural journal, bound in four continuously paginated volumes (276, 492, and 140 pp.), under the editorial direction of Heinrich F.A. Timm, with contributions across a range of topics in contemporary culture such as music, literature, architecture, theater, sport, urban planning, and fine arts. Illustrated throughout from photographs. 4to. Cloth-backed marbled boards, original illustrated wrpps. bound in. Some minor rubbing and abrasion, slight edgewear. Leipzig, 1929-1933. Although the design of this journal was stylistically based on "Das Neue Frankfurt" (The New Frankfurt), its range was broader. Commenting on the founding of the new journal, the editor noted: "The altered affairs of today inevitably demand a new attitude toward things. With each new day, the city is faced with new problems. Leipzig can hardly be an exception in this regard [...] whether it be in the field of architecture, traffic, the visual and performing arts, music, university life, urban planning or wherever else." Incredibly scarce; as of July 2019, WorldCat does not locate a single holding in a North American institution.

Stein, Gertrude
New York: Harcourt Brace and Company, 1933. Second printing, published the same year as the first of Gertrude Stein's most famous work; one of the richest biographies ever written. Octavo, original cloth, illustrated from photographs. Signed by the author on the front free endpaper, Gertrude Stein Chicago. November 30/34." In near fine condition. Largely to amuse herself, Gertrude Stein wrote The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas in 1932...using as a sounding board her companion Miss Toklas, who had been with her for twenty-five years. It has been said that the writing takes on very much Miss Toklas' conversational style, and while this is true the style is still a variant of Miss Stein's conversation style. ...She usually insisted that writing is an entirely different thing from talking, and it is part of the miracle of this little scheme of objectification that she could by way of imitating Miss Toklas put in writing something of her own beautiful conversation. So that, aside from making a real present of her past, she created a figure of herself, established an identity a twin, a Doppelganger.... The book is full of the most lucid and shapely anecdotes, told in a purer and more closely fitting prose... than even Gide or Hemingway have ever commanded" (Donald Sutherland). It was listed by Modern Library as one of the greatest English-language nonfiction books of the 20th century.

Collectible fiction book with woodcuts by Lynd Ward "In spite of being out of print for over eighty years, the book has achieved a kind of quasi-mythic reputation, and has been cited as both a landmark in Southern California fiction and an early gay novel. David Fine, who discusses it at some length in his excellent book "Imagining Los Angeles: A City in Fiction," describes it as possibly "the strangest novel to come out of the territory -- a novel not set in Hollywood or dealing with the making of movies, but saturated with every fantasy and dream associated with the region." - Goodreads. Stein, Gertrude
Harcourt Brace and Company, New York, 1933. Toklas in 1932.using as a sounding board her companion Miss Toklas, who had been with her for twenty-five years. It has been said that the writing takes on very much Miss Toklas' conversational style, and while this is true the style is still a variant of Miss Stein's conversation style. .She usually insisted that writing is an entirely different thing from talking, and it is part of the miracle of this little scheme of objectification that she could by way of imitating Miss Toklas put in writing something of her own beautiful conversation. So that, aside from making a real present of her past, she created a figure of herself, established an identity a twin, a Doppelganger. The book is full of the most lucid and shapely anecdotes, told in a purer and more closely fitting prose. than even Gide or Hemingway have ever commanded" (Donald Sutherland). It was listed by Modern Library as one of the greatest English-language nonfiction books of the 20th century. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Longus; Amyot, J. (Translator); Courier, Pierre-Louis (Editor)
Chelsea: The Ashendene Press, 1933. Raverat, Gwendolen; Hewitt, Graily. Limited Edition. Quarto size, 171 pp., one of 290 copies, with an ANS by St. John Hornby, text in French. Limited edition of 290 copies printed on paper, unnumbered, plus 20 printed on vellum; laid in are (i) a short ANS on Shelley House letterhead, from St. John Hornby to the original owner of the book, thanking him for payment and stating "I too feel sad at the thought that this is practically my last book"; and (ii) the original order form (blank) on vellum. Numerous versions of the story of Daphnis and Chloe have been published and the story continues to enthrall readers. This version, the final book published by the Ashendene Press (other than their own bibliography), is one of the loveliest: the woodcuts by Gwendolen Raverat, the marginal notes in red, and the initial capitals filled in by hand by Graily Hewitt all form a harmonious whole that pleases the eye and the mind. The translation of Jacques Amyot, published in 1559, was the first vernacular edition and remains widely used. Many of us are familiar with the sad tale of the first printing of this book, which had to be destroyed due to the sheets having been packed before the ink had sufficiently dried; deeming the results unworthy of the Press, Hornby ordered all but 10 specimen copies to be destroyed and the entire book re-printed. ___DESCRIPTION: Original binding of green paper boards with a vellum back and vellum tips, with a gold stamp on the cover being a vignette of Daphnis and Chloe with some lambs encircled with greenery, fore- and b … [Click Below for Full Description]
