Octavo (22cm); brown paper over boards, quarterbound in black cloth and stamped in gilt at the spine and front cover; top edge gilt; 311pp. Hint of a lean, with gilt at the top edge and spine panel slightly dulled, and some moderate, intermitent wear to the paper along the board edges resulting in some minor exposure. A clean, solid Very Good+ copy, lacking the original slipcase (as are nearly all copies) but with a later custom cloth slipcase included. Huxley's best-known work, a Connolly 100 title, and one of the 20th century's great dystopias.

THIS COPY HAS A LENGTHY INSCRIPTION FROM THE AUTHOR TRISTAN DEREME ON THE HALF-TITLE DATED 1932. Dereme was a French poet and author whose real name was Philippe Huc. Tristan Dereme was a pseudonym he adopted in 1908. This is a great copy of a scarce Helle title.

        The Wisdom of Jesus the Son of Sirach commonly called Ecclesiasticus

      Chelsea: Ashendene Press. 1932. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Publisher's orange limp vellum with gilt titles on spine, silk ties, deckle edges, internally clean and bright, printed in red and black with hand-coloured green and blue initials supplied by Graily Hewitt and assistants, from an edition of 328 copies. A fine copy. , Charles St. John Hornby set up his first hand press at his father's house in Ashendene, Hertfordshire in 1895. In 1899 he moved the press to his house in Chelsea, from where, with just a short break during WWI, he continued to produce highly regarded limited editions from there until 1935. Hornby primarily used two fonts he had cast for his press, Ptolomy and Subiaco, the latter based on the fifteenth-century Italian type cast by Sweynheim and Pannartz in Subiaco, Italy. While a few of Hornby's books were illustrated with wood engravings the majority relied for their beauty simply on the typography, the layout and the quality of the printing. This was one of the last books produced by the Ashendene Press and one of which St. John Hornby said "In my humble judgment it is one the most satisfactory books of the Press". The binding is signed by W.H. Smith. However at this time the W.H. Smith bindery was under the control of the binder Douglas Cockerell and bindings on Ashendene books are recognised as Cockerell bindings., 4to 11" - 13" tall, 182 pp .

        Alice's Adventures in Wonderland [together with] Through the Looking Glass

      New York: The Limited Editions Club,, 1932 & 1835. Illustrated by John Tenniel. 2 volumes, octavo. Publisher's red and blue full levant morocco, spines gilt in compartments with tools based on Tenniel's illustrations, boards elaborately gilt stamped, all edges gilt. Housed in the publisher's red and blue cloth slipcases. Frontispiece and engraved title to each volume and illustrations throughout by John Tenniel. Slightly rubbed at the extremities, spines a little faded. An excellent set. Limited editions, each volume one of only 1500 numbered copies of the Centennial Edition. The first work is singed by the original Alice, "Alice Hargreaves" (neé Liddell). This copy includes, intriguingly, the initial card notice and also the full typed letter (dated April 15 1932) from the Limited Editions Club to its members, describing their negotiations with Alice in asking her to sign the Centennial edition, and including a copy of Captain C. L. Hargreaves (her son)'s reply, in which he insists that his mother only sign a very few copies, since "she has made it an unbroken lifelong rule never to sign her name merely in the role of the original Alice in any books or letters or autograph books or anything else. This being the case, you will realize that, apart from the great effort of doing such a thing at her age, it would be a very special favour for her to autograph your edition, and would make it absolutely unique." Work 2 has the bookplate of Frank Rea Sloan, Jr., and has laid in a contemporary newspaper clipping of a poem entitled "White Queen: Written for the Lewis Carroll Centenary".

First edition. large 8vo, 286 pp, A very good copy [some shelf wear & wear at the head & heel of the spine in publisher's black cloth, gilt title to spine, illustrated, 3 beautiful multicolor plates, 6 other illustrations. Presentation Copy - Hereward Carrington (1880-1958) was one of the great psychic & magic researchers of the 20th Century. He was friends with Houdini, Crowley, & other greats in the magic & occult realm. He wrote several books, including "Houdini and Conan Doyle", along with Bernard Ernst. He was President & founder of the American Psychical Institute, had his own radio show in the 1930s/40s. His books are still in publication today. (Francis) Israel Regardie (1907-1985) was an occultist, author and one time secretary to the legendary Aleister Crowley. As an adept of the now defunct secret order known as the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, he became infamous among the occultists of his day for breaking his oath of secrecy and publishing the order's complete rituals in his book "The Golden Dawn". Regardie continued with his occult studies and already established as a co-author, published the first of his own books A Garden of Pomegranates and The Tree of Life in 1932. The first contai ned his Qabalistic studies and was based on research and knowledge gleaned from various sources. The Tree of Life however was based on the teachings of the Golden Dawn, which had ceased to exist in 1903. When published it caused a lot of excitement among the occult elite and was considered one of the most complete and understandable texts on practical magic ever written. Through out his career, Regardie's own achievements were often overshadowed by his association with Aleister Crowley, which often frustrated him, but his charitable nature and his ability to be forgiving toward his old friend was evident when he authored perhaps the most definitive biography on Crowley called The Eye in the Triangle. Regardie retired from his practice in 1981 and moved to Sedona, Arizona where he continued to write. His later books included Ceremonial Magic, The Lazy Man's Guide to Relaxation, and The Complete Golden Dawn System of Magic. While retired he continued to give advice on health and magical matters until the end of his life.. Signed by Author(s). 1st Edition.

      London: Printed and published by Sir Emery Walker, Wilfred Merton and Bruce Rogers,, 1932. Quarto. Original black Niger morocco, title gilt to spine, top edge gilt, the others uncut. In the original black card slipcase. Roundel in black on gold leaf to the title page and to the head of each of the 25 books, loose tissue-guards to each. Spine a little scuffed, endpapers tanned from turn-ins, the box slightly rubbed, a little split on the seams at the top, but overall a very good copy. First Lawrence edition, limited to 530 copies. This remarkable collaboration was initiated by the book designer Bruce Rogers who, "Inspired by reading Seven Pillars of Wisdom … persuaded Lawrence to undertake a new translation of The Odyssey." Joseph Blumenthal, curator of the 1973 Pierpont Morgan exhibition "Art of the Printed Book: 1455–1955" stated that "During the several years spent in selecting the 112 books finally shown, I handled every title reputed to be among the finest volumes ever made since Gutenberg. I believe that Bruce Rogers's Odyssey is indisputably among the most beautiful books ever produced … with a classic austerity, Rogers created a masterpiece."

Editor, Translator of the Russians, owner of Pan-Europa Press, Samuel Beckett's agent & good friend, connected to Joyce & considered the Pre-eminent Surrealist Publisher with close ties to the Avant-Garde of French literature, Celine, certainly one of the most notable. Someone (Reavey?) has drawn in pencil a fine hand on the last page of text. A Cornerstone of Modern World Literature. (The publication of this work in 1932, had an immediate impact on Henry Millar/Tropic of Cancer,1934 - Orwell/Down and Out in Paris and London/1935 - Henry Green & many others.         The Rose Garden of Omar Khayyam

      Worcester, MA, 1932. One of 250 copies. Known at the time as the smallest book in the world, this tiny book is part of a set, which includes a miniature edition of the book (1 3/4 by 1 1/2; 44x37mm), showing, in addition to the text, an explanatory preface about the tiny volume; a full-size edition of the text with the preface; “A Thimbleful of Books” by Thompson (also full-size); a proof sheet in printed wrappers with the original glassine enclosure; a magnifying glass; and the micro-miniature book, housed in a small gold box with a see-through lid. Two other pamphlets related to the Rose Garden are included in the set: “Kind Words about the Smallest Printed Book in the World,” containing letters of praise from such experts as Wilbur Macy Stone, and “The Real Omar Khayyam,” which has a portrait of Thompson and a review of his translation. This copy also includes a small keepsake menu in marbled orange wrappers, titled “Dinner Complimentary to Hamilton Brooks Wood and His Associates,” celebrating the completion of the Rose Garden and honoring those at the Commonwealth Press involved with its creation. A few additional pieces of ephemera are laid in: a prospectus, a souvenir post card showing a thimbleful of tiny books and the Worcester Memorial Auditorium, and an invitation to view the Rose Garden on display at a conference. All three books are bound in red morocco, with the original glassine. A fine and complete set, with several uncommon additional items. In the original box of half-morocco and marbled boards, which shows slight wear to ends of spine and corners. (Spielmann 396A; LXIVMOS V:3; Bondy p. 154; Welsh 5345, pictured in Bromer/Edison p. 116-117). (The micro-miniature book measures 3/16 by 7/32; 4x6mm).

      London: William Heinemann, 1932. First Edition. First Edition. Near Fine in a Very Good plus example of the rare acetate jacket. A bit of offsetting to the fore-edges of the endpapers, neat contemporary owner name ("Gale") at the front endpaper, else book is bright and clean. Jacket has attached paper flaps completely intact, bearing a price of "5/- net" on the front flap and a patent number on the rear flap, as called for. The fragile jacket is one of the best we have encountered, with a bit of wrinkle at the extremities as always found, and a chip at the crown and top rear panel. In a custom Mylar protector. Basis for the classic 1933 film about Londoners (but made in the US), winner of three Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.

        Death in the Afternoon

      NY: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1932. First edition. With a contemporary presentation inscription, dated the month of publication on the front free endpaper: “For Charles K. Jackson Esq. With the very best wishes of Ernest Hemingway September 1932.” Illustrated with a color frontispiece by Juan Gris, titled “The Bullfighter,” and numerous photographs of bullfighting scenes. Hemingway was passionate about bullfighting and viewed it as an art form equally as important and inspiring as painting or music. This was his first book-length work of non-fiction, written while he was living in Key West, Florida. Hemingway first became fascinated by bullfighting in the early 1920s, after visiting the Festival of San Fermín in Pamplona, Spain, and the experience served as inspiration for his novel The Sun Also Rises. Corners of front cover slightly bumped, else very fine in black cloth boards gilt-stamped with a facsimile of the author’s signature to the front cover. In the original unrestored dust wrapper, which has only some slight rubbing to the corners and a tiny tear and a small chip to the top edge of the rear panel. Housed in a tan cloth chemise and a slipcase backed in brown pigskin, gilt-titled to spine. A beautiful copy of a book that is still seen as one of the definitive works on bullfighting.

Glossy gold endsheets. The scarce Advance Proof Issue, Signed by Violet Oakley and printed in pencil, "proof copy," just below her signature. A further presentation inscription by Oakley appears below this in calligraphy, "presented/ to/ Austin Brown/ by/ the Author." Contains all of the printed text and the 71 full color and tinted colotype plates as the trade edition, but all bound-in (as issued), versus free in folders. Also, as issued, the proof copy does not contain the colophon giving credits for printing, binding, etc. Edges untrimmed. Bound by Alfred Smith Company, Phiadelphia. Cover shows some minor edgewear, else a thoroughly pristine copy internally. Proof copies for this book are exceedingly scarce.

        LE VOYAGE DE BABAR

      Paris, France: Jardin des Modes / Conde Nast. Very Good+ with no dust jacket. 1932. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. Color Illustrations; This book is in Very Good+ condition. The book and its contents are in generally clean, bright condition. The red / pink cloth spine of the book cover has some light bumping and edge wear along with some beginning bumping and loss of color to the bottom spine end. The corners of the book cover have some lightish bumping with some light paper loss (most notably, the bottom front corner). The spine joints of both front and rear covers have some light toning. The rear cover has some noticeable scratching and there are some spots of discoloration / color loss by the spine joint. The text pages are mostly clean and bright. This folio sized volume has vibrant use of colors, especially the deep red endpapers. There are a few spots of foxing and discoloration to several of the text pages. This is the second book in the Babar series. Jean de Brunhoff wrote and illustrated six books in the Babar series before his death at age 37 (or 38 depending on the source) of tuberculosis. The inspiration for the story of Babar was a bedtime story that de Brunhoff's wife Cecile told to amuse her son Mathieu during an illness at the age of four. The story was relayed to de Brunhoff who expanded it, named the elephant Babar, and put it down on paper with his own illustrations. The first book, Historie de Babar le petit elephant (The Story of Babar) became so popular that de Brunhoff decided to add on further stories. This second book follows Babar and his Wife Celeste as they travel by Balloon to many exotic locations. .

Momberts mystisch-visionäre Werke wurden u. a. von Martin Buber und Richard Dehmel hoch geschätzt. 1919 wurde Mombert Mitglied des Kunst- und Kulturrates für Baden, 1928 wurde er in die Preußische Akademie der Künste aufgenommen. 1933 schlossen ihn die Nazis, da er Jude war, aus der Akademie aus und verboten 1934 seine Werke. Mombert blieb in Deutschland und pflegte einen regen Briefwechsel mit seinen Freunden. (Im) Oktober 1940 wurde er im Zuge der Wagner-Bürckel-Aktion ins Lager Camp de Gurs in Südfrankreich deportiert, wo er bis April 1941 interniert war. Freunde erreichten, dass der schwer Erkrankte Oktober 1941 in die Schweiz ausreisen durfte, wo er am 8. April 1942 an den gesundheitlichen Folgen des Lageraufenthalts verstarb. Momberts Werke stehen in der Tradition Friedrich Hölderlins und Friedrich Nietzsches. Seine Lyrik hat Ähnlichkeiten mit der Stefan Georges und Rainer Maria Rilkes (Wikipedia).

        The World Crisis, full set of U.S. first editions inscribed and dated by Churchill

      INSCRIBED AND DATED BY CHURCHILL. Any inscribed World Crisis set is a prize, but inscribed U.S. editions seem considerably more scarce than inscribed British editions. Collectors will note, the U.S. first edition of the World Crisis is the true first edition, as U.S. publication preceded the British. Offered here is a full set of U.S. first editions signed by Churchill in Volume IV, The Aftermath. A lovely inked inscription by the author in three lines on the ffep reads "Inscribed by Winston S. Churchill Feb. 1932". All volumes are first edition, first printings except for The Aftermath, which is first edition, third printing. In February of 1932, Churchill was traveling in the United States on a lucrative and successful lecture tour. He spoke in many cities throughout the month before departing for England on 11 March aboard the ocean liner Majestic. This volume was undoubtedly inscribed during the tour. Publisher Charles Scribner wrote to Churchill on the day of his departure "I sincerely hope that you made no mistake in trusting your books to us. we will continue to back them until they come into their own." Churchill's books most certainly did come into their own. The inscribed volume is in very good condition. The russet boards are bright and clean with square corners and only minor shelf wear at the bottom edge. The spine is just slightly faded with minor wear at head and tail, but is clean and retains good color and bright gilt. The contents are clean and bright with no inscriptions save the one by the author. The third printing was issued in September 1929, six months after the first. The five first edition, first printing books comprising the rest of this set are in very good to near-fine condition with minor flaws and wear. The contents are uniformly clean, tight, and unusually bright for paper that is prone to age-yellowing. There is no spotting. There are no previous ownership marks save for a bookplate on the pastedown of The Unknown War. The boards are all clean and bright with only minor scuffing or blemishes. Spine presentation shows only very mild fading. Even the notoriously fade-prone Volume I spine retains good color, although the gilt has darkened as is normal for this volume. Of special note, the folding map at p.388 of The Unknown War is properly folded with no tears; there is just some wear to the leading edge where it protrudes slightly from the text block.         The Common Reader. Second Series

      London: The Hogarth Press,, 1932. Octavo. Original green cloth, titles gilt to spine. Spine mottled, a few small marks to covers, occasional spots to edges and some leaves. A very good copy. First edition, first impression, inscribed by Virginia Woolf to Ethel Smyth on the front free endpaper, "Ethel from Virginia 13 Oct 1932". Dame Ethel Smyth was a prominent composer, memoirist and suffragette, who first met Woolf in February 1930; she had just read A Room of One's Own, and hunted down its author as a potential fighter for the suffragette cause. This was the beginning of a close and complex friendship that would exert an immense influence on the lives of both women; Smyth, a rambunctious septuagenarian, and the younger Woolf, a slight and subtle-minded genius, were fixed in a state of mutual awe. In a letter dated Oct 12 1940, Woolf recounted to Smyth her memory of how at a concert in November 1919, long before they ever met, she had first seen her "coming bustling down the gangway at the Wigmore Hall, in tweeds and spats, a little cock's feather in your felt, and a general look of angry energy, so that I said, 'That's Ethel Smyth!' – and felt, being then a mere chit, she belongs to the great achieved public world, where I'm a nonentity. You reminded me of a ptarmigan – those speckled birds with fetlocks." As for Smyth, she soon fell madly in love with Virginia Woolf, who wrote to Quentin Bell (resorting again to an animal comparison), "It is like being caught by a giant crab". In spite of this initial awkwardness, Woolf respected and loved Smyth for her honesty and robustness, and when Smyth's passion calmed, (though it never cooled) the two developed a deep friendship, and in their letters they frankly discussed everything from religion and culture to masturbation and suicide. Smyth was the inspiration for the character Miss La Trobe in Woolf's Between the Acts, and their ardent discussions about the relationship between literature and music no doubt had an influence upon The Waves. The Years, also, has a Smythean origin, as it derived its inspiration in part from speeches made in 1931 by both Woolf and Smyth at the London National Society for Women's Service, on the subject of professions for women. Ethel Smyth outlived the much younger Virginia, at whose death, when asked by Raymond Mortimer for a comment, she mournfully refused, "I had to say I couldn't, touched as I was by his suggesting it. Later perhaps - but my god not now. You see it was not only that I loved her; it was that my life [was] literally based on her.

The book appears to be unread; the thin paper jacket has some inevitable chips and loss with some fading to bare areas beneath. Nonetheless this remains a pleasing and attractive example of a rare Christie anthology in wrapper.

        The Games of the Xth Olympiad, Los Angeles 1932: Official Report

      Los Angeles: The Xth Olympiade Committee of the Games of Los Angeles, U.S.A. 1932, Ltd.. Very Good. 1933. First Edition. Full leather. NOISBN . (full leather binding with gilt trim and lettering, raised bands on spine; marbled endpapers, top edge gilt) [visible wear at all corners, with an assortment of random surface-scrapes on both covers and spine; the heaviest wear is along the joints and to the bottom one-fifth of the spine; both covers are still firmly attached and the binding itself is quite tight, although the leather is split at the base of the spine, adjacent to which there is about a 3-inch separation of the backstrip at the bottom front joint; internally Fine]. (B&W photographs, maps, charts, facsimiles, etc.) Special leather-bound presentation edition of the Official Report of the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics, an exhaustive and extensively illustrated chronicle of that year's Summer Games, held from July 30th through August 14th. Not confined merely to the athletic contests (although they are covered in great detail, with oodles of photographs of the competitors), this massive tome covers the whole megillah, and I mean everything: construction of the venues (including the Olympic Village), the logistics of traffic control, the design of tickets and badges and credentials, the arrival of the hordes of foreign dignitaries, and all the entertainment, social frippery and general pomp and circumstance attendant to the Games. And more! There's also a portrait photo of nearly everybody connected with the Games in every imaginable official capacity -- committee members, national Olympic Committee chairmen from around the world, etc. This copy was presented to Henry W. Wright, at that time Chairman of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, who was an Honorary Member of the Honorary Committee of the Games (his portrait appears on the same page as that of Herbert Hoover, one of two Honorary Presidents of that Committee). In his regular governmental role, Wright was involved in bringing the Games to L.A. -- only the second time they had been held in America (the first was in St. Louis in 1904) -- and, not incidentally, in helping to funnel government funds into the expansion of the primary site for the Games, the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Exposition Park (renamed Olympic Stadium for a time). Wright, a Republican, had served in the California State Assembly from 1915 to 1922 (as its Speaker in 1919-1921). He was appointed to the Board of Supes (as it wasn't called in those more respectful days) in 1921 to fill an unexpired term, was elected to a full term in 1924 and as the body's Chairman in 1930; he retired at the end of 1932 after making an unsuccessful run for Congress and then losing his Chairmanship in a year-end election. (It probably wasn't the easiest time to be a Republican, considering everything.) Laid in to this book are two related items, both in Fine condition: (1) the presentation card for the book itself; and (2) Wright's "Official Pass" to the Games, for Section 5, Loge LL. .

With 94 original illustrations by John Tenniel, the 43 illustrations for "Wonderland" re-engraved on wood by Bruno Rollitz, the 51 illustrations in "Looking Glass" re-engraved by Frederic Warde. "Wonderland": Quarto-Millenary 36; Newman & Wiche 36a. "Looking Glass": Quarto-Millenary 65; Newman & Wiche 65a. Just barely perceptible fading to spines, a breath of rubbing to extremities, a few trivial internal imperfections, but still easily and clearly FINE COPIES, fresh, bright, and clean inside and out. These attractively-produced private press copies of two of the best-loved works of children's literature represent the only editions to be signed by the girl for whom they were written, Alice Liddell Hargreaves (1852-1934). Alice was the daughter of Henry Liddell, dean of Christ Church, Oxford, where Charles Dodgson was a lecturer in mathematics. Dodgson, whose hobby was photography, frequently photographed Alice and her sisters and became a close family friend, playing games with, and making up stories for, the children. According to DNB, it was on a picnic on 4 July 1862 that "he invented the story of Alice in Wonderland. The real Alice was then aged ten and pleaded with him to write Alice's adventures down for her, which he carefully did, supplying his own illustrations, in a green notebook that has become one of the most cherished literary manuscripts in the British Library." Over the years, Alice steadfastly refused requests to sign copies of other editions of the two works. But, late in her life, and prompted by a significant monetary inducement ($1.50 per signature), she was prevailed upon to sign volumes from both of the present editions. She did not, in fact, sign all of the copies of these printings (subscribers not willing to pay a surcharge did not get an autographed copy). "Quarto Millenary" estimates that Hargreaves signed about 1,200 copies of "Wonderland," and Newman & Wiches says that only about 500 of "Looking Glass" were signed. Our volume owes its appeal in large measure to the taste and skill of typographer and designer Frederic Warde (1894-1939), whose lovely italic hand graces the colophon here. Perhaps best known for developing the elegant italic font Arrighi, Warde began his career as a printer with the house of William Edwin Rudge, later supervised the legendary Officina Bodoni, and later still did work for several American private presses, including Crosby Gaige and, of course, the Limited Editions Club.

        Thoughts and Adventures

      Here is a collector grade, jacketed first edition, first printing - an increasingly rare prize thus.  This is Churchill's collection of 23 engaging essays on an incredibly wide variety of subjects, published in 1932.  It has been called "The broadest range of Churchill's thought between two hard covers" and reflects the two qualities so characterize Churchill's life - a remarkable breadth of both mind and life experience.  From the original front flap blurb:  "Whether he is dealing with personal reminiscences, or telling us his views on any subject under the sun, Mr. Churchill stamps the page with his own vivid personality."  This copy is near-fine in a near-fine dust jacket.  The dust jacket remains notably clean and complete, unclipped with only fractional wear and loss at the spine ends and corners.  Spine presentation is excellent, with only minor toning and soiling.  The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover.  The book beneath is likewise near-fine. The khaki cloth boards of this edition proved highly susceptible to scuffing and toning.  Here the binding is square, clean, and tight with sharp corners and bright gilt.  The binding has been spared the typical pervasive toning and scuffing.  Trivial hints of wear are limited to extremities.  The contents remain crisp, bright, and tight.  Slight differential toning at the pastedowns and endsheets corresponds to the dust jacket flaps and confirms what the superlative condition of the binding already tells us - that this copy has spent life jacketed.  A single inked owner name on the ffep is the only previous ownership mark.  Light spotting is primarily confined to the prelims, page edges, and final few leaves.  Bibliographic reference: Cohen A95.1.a, Woods/ICS A39(aa.1), Langworth p.156.
