        Ulysses

First thus two volume standard definitive edition, published by Odyssey Press (Hamburg) in 1932. Copyright page states "The present edition may be regarded as the definitive standard edition, as it has been specially revised, at the author's request, by Stuart Gilbert." Both volumes have an interesting provenance, with stickers on the insides of the rear wraps from Sylvia Beach's famous Shakespeare and Company bookstore in Paris, which famously published the true first edition of Ulysses. On rear wraps of both volumes is stated "NOT TO BE INTRODUCED INTO THE BRITISH EMPIRE OR THE U.S.A," as the book was infamously banned from these two countries until 1934 and 1936.Volume 1 book condition: very good, with notable flaws being a crease on front wrap at bottom corner as well as a creas along spine. Also present is some wear at spine ends and general age toning. Along with the Shakespeare and Company sticker at the rear is a bookseller sticker from Books Inc. in San Francisco.Volume 2 book condition: very good, with a couple subtle stains on spine and with some light wear to spine ends and general age toning. Also a light strip of rubbing on front wrap. Very nice considering age and fragility.

Mimeograph typescript, agreement between Katharine Hepburn and RKO Studios , Inc

1932. 25 pages. "...employ[ing] the Artist to render to the Corporation her exclusive services as an actress, performer or entertainer in connection with the production of a feature length motion picture...[with] a salary of One Thousand Five Hundred Dollars ($1,500.00) per week..." with an option to employ Katharine Hepburn "...in connection with the production of two (2) additional feature length motion pictures...", annotations throughout, signed in black ink Katharine Hepburn, and DO Selznick; including two loose pages regarding her salary for "A Bill of Divorcement" with annotations in pencil, dated August 30, 1932, signed in black ink Katharine Hepburn and DO Selznick; together with a typescript copy bound in blue papers with annotations and two loose pages, both with secretarial signatures. Front and back cover very worn, and detached from mimeograph copy, tears and wear on front and back cover on typescript copy. First Contract With Rko Studios For "A Bill Of Divorcement," 1932 RKO had already cast John Barrymore as the father in "A Bill of Divorcement", but the studio was having trouble casting the role of the daughter. Miss Hepburn's agent, Leland Hayward, heard about the trouble and persuaded director George Cukor to watch her test. Cukor was very impressed and was able to convince David Selznick to see it as well. Selznick was equally astounded. In her book, Katharine Hepburn: A Remarkable Woman, author Anne Edwards quotes a conversation between Selznick and screenwriter Adela Rogers St. John: "She's too marvelous...she'll be greater than Garbo. Nobody wants her but me so come and help me fight for her..." (p.79). In July of 1932, Miss Hepburn and her close friend Laura Harding took the train from New York to California, calling it their "Hollywood Adventure." Edwards writes of Miss Hepburn's arrival to the RKO lot: "Adela Rogers St. John recalled, 'As long as I live I will never forget the first day she appeared on the lot. Everybody was in the commissary at lunch when she walked in with Mr. Cukor. Several executives nearly fainted. Mr. Selznick swallowed a chicken wing whole. We beheld a tall, skinny girl entirely covered with freckles and wearing the most appalling and incredible clothes...' "(p.85-86). As always, Miss Hepburn made an entrance with a lasting impression.

        GRECE: TERRE AIMEE DES DIEUX

      G. De Malherbe & Cie., Paris 1932 - 124pp, profusely illustrated in sepia gravure and color. Text in French. This lovely 1932 French language survey of primarily nineteenth and early twentieth century Greek history and culture by noted hellenophile Rene Puaux is brimming with lovely gravure reproductions of photographs as well as color lithographs. A most presentable example of this uncommon item limited to four hundred copies showing a bit of overall creasing, soiling, and chipping to its fragile paper wrappers. The interior and textblock are sound and quite bright but for a smattering of light foxing throughout - primarily along the foredge borders. Some of the color plates are spotted on the margins and/or tissue overlays, but the exquisite images themselves remain fresh and bright. It has been priced accordingly. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its weight and value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase.         Manuscript Signed of his lecture, "William Blake; Painter, Poet, Seer." Fair copy, in the hand of Binyon's wife, Cicily*

[Possibly Cambridge, Mass, 1932. Written in ink on rectos of 19 numbered sheets; approximately 5000 words; docketed in pencil on the first page in an unknown hand "Complete Ms. 1944". 1 vols. 10 x 8 inches. In fine condition, contained in a gray cloth slipcase with green gilt leather label, and inner wrapper; with the bookplate of Kenneth A. Loft. Autograph Manuscript by Laurence Binyon on William Blake Laurence Binyon (1869-1943), poet, writer, art critic and historian, was, through his articles and books, an early popularizer of Blake's work. This essay, typical of the writings and introductions by him which adorned various scholarly studies, is an eloquent recapitulation of Blake's fiery genius, seen through the eyes of a sympathetic fellow poet, who notes that not everyone is as pro-Blake as he: "Quite recently Mr. William Watson has been telling us that [Blake's] poems are absurdly over-rated. To Mr. Yeats, on the other hand, he is a greater poet than Keats. His art attracts some minds as powerfully as it repels others." To Binyon, although Blake produced lyrical and artistic masterpieces, "[he] means to us not the contemplation of masterpieces so much as contact with a soul of elemental purity & ardour...in his spirit there seems born anew one of those makers of mythology & religion who shaped & coloured the thoughts of the human race thousands of years ago." That Blake has become more universally appreciated as the years go by is to a degree the result of such evaluations as this one, beautifully written out in the elegant hand of Binyon's wife, Cicily, and luminous with his insight and conviction. As far as we can determine, the essay is unpublished. Most probably it was prepared as a lecture during Binyon's stay in America as Charles Eliot Norton Professor, 1932-33. According to John Hatcher in his biography (p. 267) "Apart from his Norton lectures, he gave lectures and talks on almost every subject in his repertoire, including Blake as poet, painter and seer ... " (exactly the title of this piece). Hatcher goes on to say that Binyon delivered his lectures and poetry readings not only in the Boston/Cambridge area, but in New York, Philadelphia, Washington, Chicago, Cleveland, Yale, Princeton, and Vassar ..." *Handwriting identified with the courteous assistance of Edmund Gray, grandson of the poet.

Belgrad, Nadrealisticka Izdanja, 1932.. 33 S., 1 Bl. 4°, Orig.-Broschur.. Innen unaufgeschnitten. - In einer kleinen Auflage erschienen! Das erste Gedicht wurde Popovic, das 2. Ristic gewidmet! - Edition originale tiree a petit nombre. (Vgl. Milanka Todic, The impossible. Surrealist art, Ausst.-Kat. Belgrader Kunstgewerbemuseum, Belgrad 2002, S. 163-214 u. 256-272; Holger Siegel, In unseren Seelen flattern schwarze Fahnen, Serbische Avantgarde 1918-1939, Leipzig 1992, S. 269-280; Branko Aleksic, Der serbische Surrealismus, in: Europa, Europa, Bd. 2, S. 80f.). - Aleksandar Vuco (1897 - 1985), etait un poete et un romancier serbe appartenant au mouvement surrealiste. Le prix NIN du meilleur roman lui a ete attribue en 1957 pour Mrtve javke.

I am a Fugitive from a Georgia Chain Gang!

New York: Vanguard Press, 1932. First Edition. The author's first book, originally issued as a six-part serial in the pages of True Detective Mysteries in 1931, and picked up by Vanguard the following year. A slightly fictionalized but largely autobiographical account, written while in hiding, of the author's adventures with the Georgia penal system, beginning with his arrest for stealing $5.80 from an Atlanta grocer in 1922. Burns's intent was to expose the brutality and corruption of the chain gang system, and he succeeded; the book created an instant furor upon publication and became a bestseller for Vanguard. It served as the basis for the Mervyn LeRoy film released later the same year, starring Paul Muni in the role of Burns. The film heralded a new genre - the prison drama - and won three Oscars including a Best Actor Award for Muni. Copies in dustjacket are rare, this being only the second jacketed copy we have handled. SUVAK 38.
