Francis Ouimet, a twenty-year of amateur, defeated the two greatest British professionals of the day, Harry Vardon and Ted Ray, in a playoff for the 1913 U.S. Open. The stunning victory placed golf on the front page of many American newspapers for the first time. One year later, Ouimet captured the U.S. Amateur, a title he secured for a second time in 1931. Beginning with a victory in the 1914 French Amateur, and continuing for more than three decades, Francis Ouimet remained one of the great international figures in the game. He represented the United States in the first Anglo-American match at Hoylake in 1921, and participated in every Walker Cup match from 1922 to 1949. In 1951, Ouimet was named first American Captain of the R&A. Ouimet's autobiography "A Game of Golf" (1932) should be considered among the Classics of American golf biographies.         [Photo Album]: The Bergman-Osterberg Physical Training College 1932 - 1935

Hampstead, England. 1932-1935. Oblong octavo. String-tied green leather album with stamped gilt decorations measuring 7.5" x 11". Contains 106 captioned black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 3" x 2" to 5" x 3". The album has some modest tears, and some bowing with the pages overall near fine or better with slight age toning along the edges. A photo album of Yvonne Greenwood's experience at the Bergman-Osterberg Physical Training Camp for women between 1932 and 1935. Depicted throughout are women exercising, dancing, helping one another with handstands, and playing various sports such as swimming, tennis, and netball (a sport which was created by Martina Bergman-Osterberg). The school was founded by the Swedish born Bergman-Osterberg in Hampstead in 1885, before moving to Dartford in 1895. In addition to being the first physical education instructor's college in England, attendance was limited to women. Bergman-Osterberg believed that by directly encouraging women to be active in sport and education she was helping aid in women's emancipation. Bergman-Osterberg also revolutionized the way women dressed for physical activity by replacing the corset for the gymslip which she created in 1892 and which can be seen throughout the photos. The album portrays the women of the college freely participating in activities where they were encouraged to take care of themselves and make themselves better people through the use of sport, dance, and calisthenics. The college helped contribute to the social change that was occurring throughout the 1920s and 30s. This album provides an extensive look at early women's physical education. .

Ludendorff." - In Aufsätzen von General Erich Ludendorff, Dr. Mathilde Ludendorff (Facharzt für Psychiatrie) u.a. werden Themen behandelt wie z.B.: Blutverwurzeltes Weltbild, Schaffung einer Deutschgermanischen Führung, rassenfeindliche Lehre der Rom-Kirche, die christliche Religion blutfremd und rasseleugnend, Rasseerwachen des Deutschen Volkes gleichbedeutend mit Rückkehr zu arteigener Weltanschauung, Befreiung Deutschen Blutes von artfremder Lehre, Deutscher Gottglaube aus Deutschem Blut emporwachsend, Blutverwurzelte Deutsche Gotterkenntnis das unerschütterliche Fundament zur Gestaltung einer Deutschen Kultur und eines Deutschen Rechts, Deutsche Volksschöpfung, Materialistische Rassenlehren, Rom und Juda die Prediger der Weltheilslehren, Naturwissenschaftliche Rassenforschung, Keine Verquickung deutscher Sonnenwendfeiern mit Geburtstagen jüdischer Menschen!, Vertarnung des schädlichen Wirkens der Freimaurerei im Deutschen Volk, Deutsches Kunstschaffen, Moralisch verwesende Völker, 20 Jahre Vernichtungskrieg gegen Deutschland, Die Sinnerfüllung des Weltkrieges: deutsche Volksschöpfung, Die Feinde Deutscher Freiheit: Rom und Juda und ihre okkulten Werkzeuge, Macht des Rasseerbgutes, Freimaurerverrat im deutschen Heer 1914, Der völlig okkulte General v.Moltke, Christliche Grausamkeit an deutschen Frauen, Das heilige Amt der Frau und Mutter, Zum Geburtstag des Feldherrn, Die deutsche Frau in Volk und Staat, Unser Hochziel: durchgeis [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Old Papermaking in China and Japan

Tall folio. Chillicothe: Mountain House Press, 1932. Tall folio, 71pp. with 15 specimens of paper made from bamboo, mulberry, china grass and mitsuma, 3 specimens of bark, and numerous color and black and white illustrations. Three quarter buckram and decorated paper boards, printed paper label to upper board, occasional light foxing and offsetting from specimens, light wear and toning to boards, else fine in original slipcase. One of 200 numbered copies signed by Dard Hunter. A monumental history of the early centuries of Eastern papermaking, unprecedented and impossible to reproduce. Hunter wrote: ???It is hoped that the pictures and the comprehensive captions will serve to show the actual process of papermaking in the Orient in years gone by, the design being to enlighten by the use of illustrations and by actual specimens of paper rather than by extended comment.??? ???The paper specimens, dating from the 14th through 18th centuries, are from China, Japan, Persia, and Tibet; the oldest were removed from block-printed books or scrolls. Each specimen is identified as to paper composition bamboo, mulberry, mitsumata. One is a leaf from from a gold-ruled 17th c. Persian manuscript on paper made entirely from China grass. The large Chinese characters and symbols were engraved by Lankes. Of the 200 copies printed, 50 were destroyed by fire.??? (The Veatchs) Hunter???s work is of pivotal importance in the history of American book making. Immersed in the Arts and Crafts movement at Elbert Hubbard???s Roycroft company, Hunter went on to found the first handmade paper mill in America and to create arguably the world???s first ???one man??? books: books he printed on paper he had made with a typeface he had designed, cut, and cast himself. In Chillicothe, Ohio, he founded Mountain House Press and for the next 46 years dedicated himself to the study of papermaking, travelling around the world for his research and authoring 20 books on the subject.

        The Odyssey of Homer

n.p.: Printed in England,, 1932. Quarto. Original black full morocco by W.H. Smith, gilt lettered spine, top edges gilt, untrimmed. With the slipcase. 26 woodcut roundels printed in gold and black. Slipcase split at one joint and used but an excellent copy. First and limited edition of Lawrence's translation, 530 copies were printed. Presentation copy from Lawrence to his friend and dentist Warwick James, inscribed on the front free endpaper: "Warwick James from Shaw. 'a ridiculous mouse' 1932". Lawrence adopted the name Shaw when he joined the Royal Tank Corps in early March 1923. The expression "a ridiculous mouse" is an allusion to Horace's Ars Poetica (I, 139): "the mountains will labour and bring to birth a ridiculous mouse"; presumably a comment on the effort of translation, which he did find irksome, and his perhaps deflated hopes in doing justice to Homer. Although on a more mundane level Lawrence may be ridiculing his own reluctance to visit the dentist. William Warwick James (1874-1965), Senior Dental Surgeon at the Middlesex Hospital, first met Lawrence in 1922 in his capacity as a dentist. "During and after the first world war he was a member of the maxillo-facial unit at the 3rd London General Hospital, Wandsworth, and it was in recognition of his skill in the repair of gunshot wounds of the face and jaws that he was appointed OBE. His contributions to this special field were recorded in a book he wrote in collaboration with B. W. Fickling which was published in 1940" (Royal College of Surgeons). He contributed an article on Lawrence and music to T. E. Lawrence by His Friends (1937). "Inspired by reading Seven Pillars of Wisdom, Bruce Rogers persuaded Lawrence to undertake a new translation of The Odyssey. Begun in 1928 and published in 1932, the translation was undertaken during Lawrence's free time while serving in the ranks. It was published in a beautiful edition... by Emery Walker, Wilfred Merton and Bruce Rogers" (O'Brien). Joseph Blumenthal described it as "among the most beautiful books ever produced" (Art of the Printed Book: 1455-1955). A fine association copy.

        The All-Embracing Doctor Franklin

Privately Printed [Fred Anthoensen, The Southworth Press], Philadelphia 1932 - Hardcover. Number 60 of 198 copies. An Association Copy, inscribed by Rosenbach on the free endpaper: "a.c.R. Carter with the regards and season's greetings of A.S. W. Rosenbach Dec. 1/32." Affixed to the verso of the ffep is a clipping of the article from The Daily Telegraph of 16/1/33. The letter is typed on The Rosenbach Company stationery and dated February 6, 1933. He writes: "Dear Mr. Carter: I have read with great interest your article on "The All-Embracing Doctor Franklin" and wish to express my appreciation of it. There is little news here. Things are not getting any better in the book business - although it is a great time to buy it is a poor one to sell. If I hear of any news I shall take pleasure in writing you. I always consider you one of my oldest and dearest friends in England and I am looking forward to seeing you the next time I am there. With kindest regards, believe me to be Very sincerely, A.S.W. Rosenbach." A.S.W. Rosenbach (1876-1956) was a pre-eminent American collector, scholar, and bookseller. He amassed an astonishing collection of rarities which are still held at Rosenbach Library in Philadelphia. As described in his friend Carter's article, Dr. Rosenbach purchased a series of letters written by Benjamin Franklin, then 75 years old, to the beautiful young Madame Brillon while he was stationed in Paris representing the United States. Franklin was clearly charmed by and close to Brillon. Tall octavo bound in dark green quarter leather with green patterned paper covered boards. Title and author in gilt to spine. Light purple decorated endpapers. Frontispiece portrait of Franklin protected by tissue guard. Save for a couple of brown spots to fore-edge the book is in near fine condition.         Wild Pilgrimage

New York: Harrison Smith & Robert Haas, 1932. First edition. Hardcover. Octavo [24 cm] Full rust colored cloth with paper labels on the front board and the backstrip, and the publisher's black top stain. Fore and bottom edges untrimmed. Very good. The spine is slanted, the boards are just a little warped, and the cloth is lightly foxed along the fore edge of the front cover. There is a bookseller's small label on the bottom edge of the front free endsheet, and the pages are mildly age-toned. With the front inside flap of the once-present dust jacket laid in. The author/illustrator's third wordless novel explores the social and economic realities of the Great Depression. Preceded by the artist's groundbreaking first two novels: God's Man (1929) and Madman's Drum (1930). In this work Ward used a a two color system, rust colored for the thoughts of the protagonist, and black for the crumbling world around him. Ward produced six wordless novels between 1929 and 1937, and although Ward continued to be an illustrator in high demand for the rest of his life, these early works find him at the absolute height of his creative and artistic powers.

A near fine copy in slightly dusty jacket showing some minor edgewear only and a tiny chip to head of spine. Most presentable. Waugh's third novel, a controversial book which helped establish him as a master satirist. Set on the fictional African island of Azania, 'Black Mischief' is a thinly veiled reference to the then empire of Abyssinia, now Ethiopia. The novel chronicles the efforts of the English educated Emperor Seth, assisted by a fellow Oxford graduate (Waugh's recurring character) Basil Seal, to modernize his Empire.

D'Aci i d'Allà [1934 Christmas Issue], Containing Figures davant el mar

Llibreria, Catalonia: np. 1st Edition. Very Good. FIRST EDITION, with the EXTREMELY RARE AND SOUGHT-AFTER POCHOIR BY MIR?" (From Here and There: Figures by the Sea); one of only five pochoirs created in his career. "After their first encounter, Miró and [the architect] Sert continued to meet often through the group of painters, sculptors, and art critics of the cultural group known as ADLAN (1932-1936)." Through the joint efforts of ADLAN and GATCPAC, a group of architects active from 1930 to 1936, came "the most representative publication of that period: a special issue of the magazine D'Aci i d'Allà focusing on twentieth-century art-the 1934 Christmas issue-directly supervised by Joan Prats and Josep Lluís Sert and with the participation of Joan Miró, in the first instance of a collaboration between the artist and the architect … The result of this joint effort was far more than a mere revision of contemporary visual arts; it became a guidebook to the new trends and to the avant-garde aesthetic, providing information both about the art world and about the latest advances in the fields of housing and construction. Joan Miró was the main protagonist of the issue of D'Aci i d'Allà directed by Sert, once again being praised as a contemporary primitive. In designing the cover and the famous pochoir specifically created for this issue, Miró managed to convey the greatest expressive force with minimal resources, using only red, yellow, and black against the white paper background" (Vecchierini, 46-48). The most sought-after issue of this Spanish magazine, which contains an hors texte colour pochoir plate by Joan Miró (Figures davant el mar), printed in yellow, red, and black. There are also texts by C. Soldevila, L. Fernández, C. Zervos, J. L. Sert, J.V. Foix, C. Sindreu, M.A. Cassanyes, A. Jakovsky, and S. Gasch. Cramer 11. Barcelona: Llibreria Catalonia, 1934. Size: 330 x 280 mm (approx. 13 x 11 inches). Spiral bound in original illustrated wrappers. With original subscription form laid in. Very light wear to wrappers. Pochoir pristine. A remarkably well-preserved copy of a notoriously rare and fragile work.

[Op. 33b]. Klavierstueck [in New Music: A Quarterly of Modern Compositions, vol. 5, no. 3]. With a signed autograph inscription to Webern. Most probably bound by Schoenberg

San Francisco: The New Music Society of California [without PN]. April 1932. Folio. Decorative mosaic paper boards with original publisher's decorative yellow wrappers bound in. [i] (title), 7 pp. Caption title to p. 1: "Klavierstück Arnold Schönberg." Footnotes to p. 1: Left "International Copyright Secured"; middle: "Copyright 1932 by Arnold Schönberg Made in U.S.A."; right: All Rights Reserved." Footer to lower left corner of all pages except p. 1: "Klavierstück - 7." Title to recto of upper wrapper printed in orange: "New Music A Quarterly of Modern Compositions This issue contains Klavierstueck by Arnold Schoenberg April 1932." Verso of upper wrapper includes masthead of New Music identifying volume and issue; the periodical's publisher and owner, Henry Cowell; the "executive board" (3 persons); the "Honorary Board of Endorsers" (57 modernist composers); and the agent for the German-speaking countries (Heinrichshofen's Verlag, Magdeburg). Contents of back issues printed to recto of lower wrapper, verso blank. Printed note to title: "Arnold Schoenberg has requested that we do not publish either biographical notes or musical explanations concerning his work, since both he and his musical viewpoint are well known." With the composer's autograph inscription to his distinguished pupil Anton Webern (1883-1945) in ink to lower right corner of title: "Lieber Webern, kannst Du das lesen? Viele herzliche Grüße Dein Arnold Schönberg 15/VIII/32." Manuscript note in pencil in the hand of the noted music antiquarian Albi Rosenthal to verso of upper board: "op. 33b (1932). The final note [measure 68, left hand] corrected in pencil by Schoenberg. Bound by Schoenberg?" [N.B. While the binding is quite likely by Schoenberg, who loved binding books as a pastime, the final note is not actually corrected; rather, the annotation "h" (German for "B natural") next to the notehead confirms the printed pitch and apparently serves to facilitate reading; the note has six ledger lines]. Boards slightly worn and bumped. Slightly browned and creased. . First Edition. Rufer (Engl.) pp. 57. Ringer p. 318. Tetsuo Satoh pp. 23-24. The first of Schoenberg's works to be published in the United States. As the composer still lived in Germany and had no plans to emigrate, let alone to California, the present publication appears eerily prophetic. The pagination, with odd numbers to rectos and even numbers to versos, is highly unusual. The use of umlauts in caption title and footer suggests that the music was engraved in Germany or Austria. The list of composers on the Honorary Board of Endorsers is quite illustrious. It includes household names from the United States and many European countries; German composers are, however, conspicuously absent. "In 1928, Emil Hertzka, the Director of Universal Edition, contacted Arnold Schönberg requesting permission to use his Piano Piece, op. 11, No. 1, in a planned anthology of modern piano compositions. Schönberg, however, decided to compose a new piece (op. 33a). Two years after the publication (1929), this was followed by the composition of Piano Piece, op. 33b, during a stay in Barcelona. In his Piano Pieces, op. 33, Schönberg makes consistent use of a technique which combines twelve-tone rows, in which two forms of a row can be used at the same time without repeating individual tones. This expanded the number of possibilities for combination while also preserving the conclusiveness of the twelve-tone writing. The relatively short duration and unity of the pieces are reminiscent of romantic forms: the "Intermezzi" by Johannes Brahms, for instance, whom Schönberg greatly esteemed... His final compositions for solo piano demonstrate his endeavours to fit new musical ideas into traditional contexts." Website of the Arnold Schönberg Center, Vienna. "Webern, who was probably Schoenberg's first private pupil, and Alban Berg, who came to him a few weeks later, were the most famous of Schoenberg's students and became, with him, the major exponents of 12-note technique in the second quarter of the 20th century." Kathryn Bailey in Grove online The mosaic pattern of the decorative paper boards used in the binding of this item is the same as that used in the binding of the first edition of Alban Berg's Three Pieces from the "Lyric Suite," also in this catalogue; it can thus be safely assumed that both of these volumes were bound by the same person. A fine association item, most probably bound by Schoenberg.

The Football League. The Competitions of the Season 1931[–1939]

London: [for the author,], 1932-40. 8 volumes, octavo. Original red cloth, title gilt to the spines of all but the first year, and the upper boards of all, blind panel to the front board of the last five volumes. Somewhat sunned, rubbed, soiled, spines starting to split and chip head and tail, all hinges sound, endpapers browning and contents lightly toned, but remains a very well-preserved set. First editions, extremely uncommon. Only 25 sets can possibly exist, and we can trace no set, not even single individual annual copies, institutionally. "For eight seasons during the thirties Billy Johnston, editor of the Arsenal FC programme for many years, kept his own hand-written records on a season-by-season basis. He then privately published them in eight volumes, each limited to forty copies - results, scorers, transfers and much else of interest is presented in these unique and extremely scarce records, later published in facsimile by the Association of Football Statisticians" (Seddon). The limitation was in fact variable through the publication's brief history. No limitation is stated for the first year; 1932-3 has a label mounted on the front pastedown to the effect that "The Edition is limited to Twenty-Five Presentation Copies", and 1933-4 has a similar label to the front free stating that "This Book is confined to 35 Presentation Copies"; 1934-5, 1935-6, and 1936-7 have stated limitations of "40 Presentation Copies", which in 1937-8 and 1938-9 becomes "50 Presentation Copies". Evidently the outbreak of the Second World War ended production for the duration, and it was never resumed. An excellent set of this highly desirable "black tulip" of football collecting, one of only 25 such sets possible.

6 Autograph letters signed to Samuel Goudsmit. 13 pp. total.

Charlottenburg & Berlin 1932 - His Scientific Archives Were Destroyed in a Bombing Raid; Only 189 Letters Survive, of which the Five Offered Here are Previously Unknown Paschen, Friedrich (1865-1947). 6 Autograph letters signed to Samuel Goudsmit (1902-78). Charlottenburg or Berlin, January 15, 1932-June 13, 1935. 13pp. total on 7 sheets measuring either 237 x 208 mm. or 286 x 223 mm. Creased where previously folded, with minor soiling and wear along creases, otherwise fine. English translations included. Excellent series of very technical scientific letters to Goudsmit discussing his ongoing investigations in spectroscopy, particularly problems of hyperfine structure and the Zeeman effect. Described by one biographer as "probably the greatest experimental spectroscopist of his time" (quoted in DSB), Paschen, in the words of Niels Bohr, had a "happy intuition" that led him always to "pursue experimentally those problems the investigation of which proved to be of decisive significance for the extension of general theoretical conceptions" (quoted in DSB). Paschen's experimental work in spectroscopy provided some of the most revealing clues to atomic structure; it was particularly useful to Arnold Sommerfeld, whose modifications of Bohr's theory of atomic structure had impressed Paschen so much that he devoted six months to confirming the theory's predictions. During his tenure as professor of physics at the University of Tubingen (1901-24), Paschen made Tubingen into Germany's most important center of atomic spectroscopy. In 1924 he succeeded Nernst as president of the Physikalische-Technische Reichsanstalt, the highest post to which a German experimental physicist could aspire; on May 1, 1933, after the Nazi's seizure of power in Germany, he was forced to retire in favor of the pro-Nazi physicist Johannes Stark. Despite this setback, Paschen was able to continue his laboratory research for a few years afterward-although at the cost of considerable difficulty and personal humiliation, some of which is hinted at in the letters offered here. These six letters from Paschen to Goudsmit are almost exclusively concerned with the scientific investigations performed by the two men during the years 1932-1935; they exemplify the interplay between theoretical and experimental physics so characteristic of Paschen's career. This is particularly apparent in the last four letters (August 22, 1933-June 13, 1935), in which Paschen provided Goudsmit with detailed information on the results of his latest researches: Thank you so much for kindly sending me your and Mr. Bacher's work on anomalies in hyperfine structures. At the same time please accept my cordial congratulations on your wonderful quantitative settlement of the disputed questions regarding Al II and Hg I. For Al everything now appears to be in perfect order. Also, in the meantime I have become convinced that two fine structure components of the two lines 4 1,3F3-nG are simple and do not have any weak companions. Accordingly, the term nG must be split with 0.48 cm-1, as you conclude, and not with 0.35 as I assumed. . . . It is fascinating how the same problem is approached independently from several angles. However, your work is very important because you derive quantitative, definitive results. And in his letter of Aug. 22, 1933: You were so kind to write me concerning the theoretical fundamentals for comprehending the fine structures of the lines of Al II. Since you went to such trouble, I assume that the progress of my work on this topic would be of interest to you and would like to inform you that the publication thereof will not be forthcoming for some time. . . . I have made a study of extensive new material and have progressed to the point that the entire spectrum can be based quite soundly on the values of the fine structure terms. . . . All triplet terms now have two different numerical values corresponding to j + 1/2 and j - 1/2, which are based on the fine structure splitting values that you provided. . . [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Collection of 5 Original 1930's Artist's Fashion Sketches (Ladies Wedding & Fashion Artwork )

n.p., 1932. Good. A nice collection of five original artist's fashion mockup sketches, probably created for catalog use. All are executed in a combination of pencil, ink and guache onto thick, blind stamped "Strathmore Drawing Board" with three boards measuring 23 wide x 29 inches tall, one 17 wide x 29 inches tall and one 14.5 wide x 11.5 inches tall. All are works in progress, having both artist and production notes, date and time stamps, soil (especially verso) and multiple finger prints from much handling and use with the occasional pin hole and one sketch having some paint splatters and an 1-1/2 inch closed tear to the foot - not affecting image. With the rubber stamp of "Robert Simpson Company" to one sketch and others with date stamps of 1932 and 1933. A study of the creation process of a 20th century fashion artist, as seen through their sketches, portraying some of the hottest emerging fashions in the early 1930's. Designed for the Robert Simpson Company, a successful department store chain founded by Robert Simpson in 1858.

[Op. 33b]. Klavierstueck [in New Music: A Quarterly of Modern Compositions, vol. 5, no. 3]. With a signed autograph inscription to Webern. Most probably bound by Schoenberg

San Francisco The New Music Society of California [without PN] April 1932. Slightly browned and creased.. First Edition. Rufer (Engl.) pp. 57. Ringer p. 318. Tetsuo Satoh pp. 23- 24.
