Apparently Hart Crane's mother either gave away or sold some of his bookplates shortly after his death to Crane's good friend, the bookseller Samuel Loveman, thus resulting in occasional "association copies" surfacing.       Elkin Matthews Ltd., London 1926 - Hardcover. Small 4to. 54 pp text + 38 wood engraved plates of alchemical symbolism. Quarter black cloth over blue/grey paper covered boards, gilt title to spine, fore-edge uncut. Illustrations by Frederick Carter. This copy inscribed in pencil on the first blank "David Poole's [?] copy, with the author's regards, Frederick Carter." Also signed in pencil by Carter on the title page. Carter was friend and co-editor of Form Magazine with Austin Osman Spare, and in his own right an interesting alchemist of the spirit. The Dragon of the Alchemists comprises an essay and thirty-eight drawings, some of which are indeed strongly reminiscent of the work of Spare, whilst others are more conventional in their mystical allegory. Boards a little darkened at outer edges, spine ends and corners lightly bumped and chafed, very light bow to upper board, endpapers unevenly browned, contemporary bookshop sticker on front endpaper, faint foxing to half title page, pages a bit browned at margins. Overall a tight, unmarked VG copy in Fair dust jacket. (Dust jacket somewhat darkened and grubby.       Charles Scribner's Sons, New York 1926 - First edition, first issue of the first printing, with the misprint ("stoppped") on page 181 line 26, in the first issue dust jacket with the misprint on the front panel ("In Our Times" vs. "In Our Time"). Octavo, original black cloth. A near fine copy with a bookplate to the inside pastedown in a very good first issue dust jacket, which has had professional restoration, mostly in strengthening the paper and with a small bit of paper replacement at the upper front flap fold. The Annette Campbell-White copy brought $120,000 at Sotheby's in 2007. The Sun Also Rises was published by Scribner's in 1926, and a year later in the United Kingdom by Jonathan Cape under the title Fiesta. Though it initially received mixed reviews, it is now "recognized as Hemingway's greatest work" (Meyers, 1985). The fictional plot depicts a love story between war-wounded and impotent Jake Barnes and the promiscuous divorcée Lady Brett Ashley, but the novel is a roman à clef; the characters are based on real people and the action is based on real events. Hemingway proposes that the "Lost Generation," considered to have been decadent, dissolute and irretrievably damaged by World War I, was resilient and strong. Naturally, themes of love, death, renewal in nature, and the nature of masculinity are heavily investigated. For example, the characters engage in bull-fighting, which is presented as an idealized drama: The matador faces death and, in so doing, creates a moment of existential nothingness, broken when he vanquishes the possibility of death by killing the bull (Stoltzfus, 2005). The Sun Also Rises is seen as an iconic modernist novel for future generations (Mellow, 1992), although it has been emphasized that Hemingway was not philosophically a modernist (Reynolds, 1990). "The Sun Also Rises is Hemingway's masterpiece - one of them, anyway - and no matter how many times you've read it or how you feel about the manners and morals of the characters, you won't be able to resist its spell.       Golden Cockerel Press, Waltham St. Lawrence 1926 - Cream linen boards with gilt titles on spine, bookplate of the art historian Rainforth Armitage Walker who was an expert on both Eric Gill and also Aubrey Beardsley who designed the bookplate, internally clean and bright, illustrated with 6 wood-engravings by Eric Gill. Dust jacket a little darkened on spine and showing light edgewear/rubbing, one small (<1cm) closed tear to top edge of rear panel, jacket now in a protective sleeve. No.167 of an edition of 250 copies. The years between 1924 and 1933, when Robert Gibbings was proprietor, were in many ways the golden age of the Golden Cockerel Press. Under Gibbings the press would collaborate with the best wood engravers then working, such as Eric Ravilious, John Nash, Paul Nash, John Farleigh, Agnes Miller Parker, David Jones, and, of course, Eric Gill. At the time Gibbings was buying the Golden Cockerel Press Gill was moving into the rural isolation of Capel-y-ffin and a period of his life that would produce much of his best work as a sculptor, an engraver and a typographer. Gill would produce the engravings for some of the Golden Cockerel Press' most important works of the period; The Song of Songs (1925), Troilus and Criseyde (1927), The Canterbury Tales (1928), and The Four Gospels of 1931. No other wood-engraver of the period comes near to Gill's originality and verve, but the explicit eroticism of much of Gill's work shocked many of his former supporters and drew puzzled reproaches from the Dominicans with whom Gill had been associated since his conversion to catholicism in 1913. Some light offsetting to the blank endpapers, otherwise a lovely bright copy in publishers green cloth with gilt lettering to spine and gilt Cape logo on rear board. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. In the rare original dustwrapper with wood engraved illustration to front panel and words "Limited edition" on spine. A very near fine book in a very good dustwrapper with small amount of loss to the top and bottom of spine and minor rubbing to edges. Tipped in at the front is a typed letter, signed by Armstrong, to a collector who had written asking about purchasing the author's manuscript for the book. Armstrong writes; "The amount before which my resistance would become extremely difficult to maintain is five hundred dollars". The letter is dated 10 December 1927. Beneath the letter is the bookplate of the collector. The title of Gill's essay is the definition of beauty as given by St. Thomas Aquinas, "that which pleases by being seen". Splendidly bright and complete gilt lettering. Charming endpapers with stylized cityscape of New York against clouds and a blue sky. Very clean and tight throughout; with a tender rear hinge. Two corners lightly bumped; and a small pinhole at the center of the front hinge; otherwise, a splendid copy. With red top-staining. In the complete original pictorial dustjacket printed on textured paper with the original price of $2.00 at the bottom of the inside front flap. The jacket features an artistic rendering of the Manhattan skyline of 1926. There is slight darkening to the spine and one light scuff mark; and light edge-rubbing. With a 1.5" closed tear at the top of the rear flap. Light chipping and wear to the top and bottom of the spine ends as well as the corners. Very scarce in a complete dust jacket. "Occasionally there appears a first novel which refuses to fit into any of the stock descriptive categories that the publisher usually finds serviceable. Such a novel is "The Cubical City," an intense, vital story of Manhattan which follows none of the conventional fiction lines. (Inside front flap) Janet Flanner (March 13, 1892 &#150; November 7, 1978) was an American writer and journalist who served as the Paris correspondent of The New Yorker magazine from 1925 until she retired in 1975. She wrote under the pen name "Genêt". She also published a single novel, The Cubical City, set in New York City.In September 1925 Flanner published her first "Letter from Paris" in The New Yorker, launched the previous February, starting a professional association that lasted for five decades. She wrote under the pen name "Genêt". Flanner had first come to the attention of editor Harold Ross through his first wife, Jane Grant, who was a friend of Flanner's from the Lucy Stone League, an organization that fought for women to preserve their maiden names after marriage, in the manner of Lucy Stone. Flanner joined the group in 1921. Ross famously thought "Genêt" was French for "Janet".Flanner was a prominent member of the American expatriate community which included Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, John Dos Passos, e. e. cummings, Hart Crane, Djuna Barnes, Ezra Pound, and Gertrude Stein&#150; the world of the Lost Generation and Les Deux Magots. While in Paris she became very close friends with Gertrude Stein and her lover, Alice B. Toklas. In 1932 she fell in love with Noel Haskins Murphy, a singer from a village just outside Paris, and had a short-lived romance.       . Radierung, 1926, auf festem chamoisfarbenem Velin, signiert und datiert. 23,6:17,4 cm. Unser Blatt erinnert in Ausführung und Ausdruck an Radierungen von K. Kollwitz (1867-1945).. Gertrud Lerbs studierte an der Kunst- und Gewerbeschule Königsberg bei O. Ewel (1871-1954), Feist und Weber, ab 1918 an der Kunstakademie Königsberg in der Graphikklasse von G.H. Wolff (1875-1945), wo sie die erste Frau mit Meisteratelier war. An der Königsberger Kunstakademie lernte sie 1923 ihren Ehemann, den Maler Kurt Bernecker (1896-1974) kennen. 1924 erhielt sie die Goldene Medaille der Künste, 1928 die Medaille der Berliner Akademie für hervorragende Leistungen Preußischer Kunsthochschüler. Studienreisen unternahm sie nach Holland und Paris. 1930 hatte sie eine Ausstellung in Berlin bei Gurlitt. Durch Kriegseinwirkung wurde 1944/1945 ihr Atelier zerstört. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg siedelte sie nach Lüneburg über, wo sie gemeinsam mit ihrem Mann eine Malschule betrieb. Ihre Haupttechnik war die Radierung, sie schuf aber auch Illustrationen. Graphikmappen (z.B. Griffelkunst Vereinigung Hamburg) mit Künstlern wie H. Orlowski (1894-1967), E. Ende (1901-1965) und E. Bargheer (1901-1979). Die Motive reichen vom Märchenhaften zu ostpreußischen Landschaften und sozialen Problemen.

Die Erziehung, "Monatsschrift für den Zusammenhang von Kultur und Erziehung in Wissenschaft und Leben" war eine Fachzeitschrift der Erziehungswissenschaft. Sie war geprägt von geisteswissenschaftlicher und Reformpädagogik. Herausgegeben wurde sie bis 1937 von Eduard Spranger, Wilhelm Flitner, Theodor Litt, Herman Nohl und Aloys Fischer. Nach dem Ausscheiden von Flitner, Litt, Nohl und Fischer, übernahm Eduard Spranger die Herausgeberschaft gemeinsam mit Hans Wenke. Spranger und der Verlag verweigerten 1943 die Zusammenlegung mit den Zeitschriften "Nationalsozialistisches Bildungswesen" und "Weltanschauung und Schule". Daraufhin wurde "Die Erziehung" eingestellt, offiziell aus kriegsnotwendigen Gründen. Das hier angebotene Werk besteht aus 17 kompletten, einheitlich gebunden Jahrgänen bis 1942 (teilweise Reprint). Der Erhaltungszustand des hier angebotenen Werks ist trotz seiner Bibliotheksnutzung ordentlich. Es befindet sich lediglich ein Bibliotheksstempel im jeweiligen Buch; ordnungsgemäß entwidmet. [folding Wessex map to rear] A presentation copy of the limited edition of Hardy&#39;s tragic novel, Tess of the D&#39;Urbervilles, inscribed by his second wife, Florence Hardy with the couple&#39;s visiting cards laid in. The books is bound in the original blue buckram over bevel-edges boards with top edge gilt and gilt spine lettering. The spine is faded. Florence Hardy has written on the first blank to an unknown recipient: &#39;With every good wish from Mr & Mrs Thomas Hardy. November 1927&#39;. Laid in are the visiting cards for both Thomas Hardy and his wife. The author&#39;s card conforms to the usual late Victorian pattern and dimensions of 3x1.5 inches with Hardy&#39;s London Club, The Athenaeum, and Max Gate addresses printed in the lower corners and written above his name: &#39;Good wishes, from&#39; in a contemporary hand that seems likely to be that of Hardy&#39;s first wife, Emma Hardy, but is certainly not Florence Hardy&#39;s hand nor, apparently, the author&#39;s own. Florence Hardy&#39;s visiting hand accompanies that of her husband and, interestingly, is about twice the size of his card with her Max Gate address only and, written in her hand, &#39;With good wishes&#39; below her printed married name. The &#39;h&#39; of &#39;wishes&#39; displays her characteristic trailing approach to the letter that is also displayed in the book&#39;s inscription. This little collection of cards and inscribed book, no doubt put together by a near contemporary of Hardy, is a testament to the celebrity status that Hardy possessed as an author during his last two decades.
