Lawrence, T.E.
Privately Issued By the Author, London, 1925. The extremely rare second state of the prospectus for Seven Pillars, original paper wrappers, very minor dust marking to wrappers, [together with, loosely inserted:] Notice to Subscribers. 1 June 1925, broadsheet; the two together in original envelope with "Col Lawrences Book" written on it. Prospectus contains one colour plate colour plate of Galil Bey and Kennington line cut all as described in O'Brien A036. This is the second state prospectus as issued to subscribers' to the '26 Seven Pillars in 1925. This edition was however delayed for multiple reasons, and so a second issue of the prospectus was prepared, omitting the introductory chapter of the first state, but adding a frontispiece and illustration by Kennington, and containing text from the first seven chapters. It was distributed with the letterpress 'Notice to Subscribers' (as present here), which explains the reasons behind the delays explaining delay in publishing "A fish yet in the sea" and anticipates that printing will be complete by September 1925. Only c.100 copies were produced. Thiese two are elusive and sought after items of T.E. Lawrence ephemera. This copy was formerly the property of Dr Lionel Dakers; see sale of his collection, Christie's, 15 November 2006, lot 222. Despite a career spanning only 20 bouts, Corbett faced the best competition his era had to offer; squaring off with a total of 9 fighters who would later be enshrined alongside him in the International Boxing Hall of Fame. SEM (Georges Goursat)
Paris [1925]. large 4to. 20pp. Paris [1925]. large 4to. 20pp. A portfolio of images of the infamous Luis Ferdinand d'Orleans y Borbón, Infante d'Espagne, outrageous gay character, drug dealer, cocaine addict, friend to Cocteau, Mistinguett, Marcel Proust among others. Luis Ferdinand is portrayed in a number of outrageous poses, cavorting with sailors, sniffing cocaine, dressing as a woman and soliciting policemen, etc. He was expelled from France on several occasions for dealing in drugs (dressed as a woman on one occasion) and King Alfonso XIII of Spain eventually deprived him of his rights as an Infante of Spain. In 1930, he married (the much older) Marie Constance Charlotte Say, widow of Prince Henri Amédée de Broglie and the owner of the Château de Chaumont, creating great controversy in the process. His relationship with Proust is detailed in Gury, C. Proust et le "très singulier" infant d'Espagne. Undoubtedly Sem's most outrageous published collection of images. Very good in original decorative wrappers, warmly inscribed by Sem on the title page "Pour Jean Cocteau, Ces enfants terribles! affectueusement. Sem." The book also bears the notation, also in Sem's hand: "Cet album est un peu culotte (si j'ose dire) mais c'est un des derniers qui me restent." Wrappers have been lightly restored with one closed tear, the marbled boards are lightly worn with some slight loss at spine and light repair, leather label.Quite rare, particularly in the wrappers; only one institutional copy found. COCTEAU, Jean
[Paris: Edouard Champion (1925)]. 4to. [Paris: Edouard Champion (1925)]. 4to. Perhaps Cocteau's greatest illustrated book, consisting of thirty-one self-portraits, created while he was undergoing a disintoxication program for his addiction to opium. The drawings were produced as he stared relentlessly into a mirror for hours on end, attempting to come to terms with his chronic addiction and still mourning the loss of his beloved Raymond Radiguet. Many of the images also include text, some of it written backwards, creating a surrealistic effect. A beautiful copy of a superlative work of personal insight, created during the most creative period of Cocteau's life. Limited to 130 copies (and 10 on Japon), the sheets are laid into illustrated wrappers, with a decorative cardboard loose cover, as issued. Light wear to wrappers, small tear at foredge, internally very good. This copy (#102) is initialed by Cocteau on the colophon page. Housed in a fine decorative paper slipcase and chemise. Uncommon. JAMES, M. R.

Light marking to cloth and faint foxing to initial and final few leaves, yet still a very good copy. First edition, first impression, of James's fourth and final collection of "excellent" ghost stories (Bleiler). Montague Rhodes James (1862-1936) was a a noted scholar and the author of numerous ghost stories, which he began writing after entering Cambridge in 1882. James's readings at King's College were renowned in Cambridge, and he continued the tradition when he left his role as Vice-Chancellor in 1918 to become Provost of Eton. A.A. Milne
fine book. Alan Alexander Milne (1925) 'When We Were Very Young', UK first deluxe edition, bound in blue leather (just like the original trade edition which was published in blue cloth), published by Methuen. In addition, an original letter handwritten and signed by author A.A. Milne. This is an extremely rare edition and certainly the least common of the four leather bound Winnie-the-Pooh books issued in a few hundred copies. 'When We Were Very Young' was originally published in 1924 as a regular trade edition only. It was immediately successful and the first printing sold out in one day. The publisher Methuen then decided to issue a deluxe leather bound version in three colours: blue, red, and green. The paper stock of the seventh printing of the trade edition (March 1925) was used for that purpose. In 1926 when 'Winnie-the -Pooh' was published it was issued as a deluxe leather bound edition in three colours as well keeping that tradition for the remaing two Pooh books. Condition: a fine and abolutely beautiful copy. No previous owner's scribbles inside, the leather binding is crsip and clean like on the day of publication. No rubbing to the gilding. Page block edges gilded as called for. The original glassine warpper is present and without any chips or tears, now of course yellowed as over 90 years have passed since publication! The original box is near fine with no structural damage at all and a whiff of foxing and darkening as to be expected. The best condition on the marekt and extremely rare to find as the vast majority of deluxe copies are the second editions which … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Chatto & Windus, 1925. Hardcover. VG+/VG-. RACKHAM, Arthur. 4to., 19.1 x 25.2cm, xi 175pp plus 7 coloured plates as called for. Orange cloth covered boards with red stamped illustration and titles to the front and spine. The book has its original unclipped jacket with a 7s 6d price. The boards are clean and bright with no fading and only a hint of rubbing to the corners and spine tips. Internally, the book has no name, inscription or bookplate and is very clean with only slight toning to the free endpapers and a very few light spots to the fore edge. The somewhat dust stained dust jacket has a large chip measuring 6.5 x 5 cm at the top of the rear panel and one of 3 x 2.5cm from the head of the spine and minor chipping from the foot of up to 0.5cm. There is also minimal loss at the corners. There are a number of small tears of less than 5mm to the edges and four larger closed tears of 2-4 cm. Loos, Anita
New York: Boni & Liveright, 1925. First edition. Very good in very good jacket.. Original red cloth, gilt-lettered front board and spine. Original unclipped pictorial dust jacket printed in black and green, with illustration by Barton on front panel and dashing portrait of Loos on rear flap. Illustrated throughout by Ralph Barton. 217, [1] pages. Ownership inscription dated January 1926 on front free endpaper, above which Anita Loos has signed and dated (1974) in blue ink. Laid in: two typed letters signed by rare book dealers (David Randall, 1932; Philip Duschnes, 1933) concerning the scarcity of first state copies (as this copy). Dampstaining to verso of rear panel of jacket, also affecting bottom of rear board, else quite a clean copy with very little wear. Inscribed first issue of the famous bestseller of the Jazz Age, chronicling the high life of a Hollywood flapper's trip to Europe. One of the great comic novels of the early 20th century, this work follows in the tradition of humorists like Mark Twain with the conceit of the American innocent abroad. Wildly popular, all copies of the first edition sold out in a single day; it serves as a useful contrast to the melancholy symbolism of THE GREAT GATSBY published the same year. Its tongue-in-cheek satire is nevertheless a perceptive commentary on the roles power and money can play in expanding or limiting women's freedoms, a theme which made Edith Wharton a vocal admirer. The 1949 musical introduced the song "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend, " memorably performed by Marilyn Monroe in the 1953 film. A rollicking adven … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Battle Creek Sanitarium] [Women] [Nursing] [Eugenics] [Seventh Day Adventism]
Most Michigan: N.p., 1925-1926. The Battle Creek Sanitarium School of Nursing Battle Creek Sanitarium ran a school of nursing on its campus from 1883 onward when it was started by Dr. Kate Lindsay, following the principles of nursing learned at Bellevue Hospital in New York. The Battle Creek Scooh of Nursing was the first Adventist nursing school in the country. The school was aligned with the Battle Creek Sanitarium, with Dr. John Kellogg's principles of nutrition and self-restraint taught throughout the program. The collection of material here, belonging to the student Ethel Roop, represents a surprisingly intimate portrait of a young woman's life while at the School of Nursing from 1924 to 1926. The large scrapbook mixes intimate portraits of Roop and her student friends with a wide range of ephemera, some printed, some kept, including Halloween decorations, medical paraphernalia, appointment receipts, letters, and other keepsakes. Roop kept her correspondence - acceptance letters, etc. and most interestingly, her correspondence from her fellow students. One smaller well-kept photo album shows scenes from the college including a portrait of Kellogg in the snow with the caption "Dr. Kellogg Himself / Hale and Hearty at 74 / Our Inspiration and Guide," a photograph of three women cleaning produce "Cleaning celery - cleaning lettuce too / In Diet Kitchen there's lots to do," several pictures from the infant ward, one picture of a young boy on the toilet, and other pictures from the grounds. The level of comradery among the students seems quite high, and despite the institu … [Click Below for Full Description]

The four men spent the period from mid-July to early Septetmber exploring the Magdalena Bay region in north west Spitsbergen. They crossed three new passes and ascended six peaks for the first time. The expedition travelled back from Spitsbergen aboard S.M.S. Zieten, then under the command of Alfred Ritscher. On his return, Grotewahl wrote a single paper with results from the expedition, and drew critisicm for squandering resources. However, his experiences in planning and running the expedition led him to look into the possibility of establishing a research base that would support future polar expeditions. This led to his foundation in July 1926 of the Archiv für Polarforschung at Kiel (today the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Polarforschung).
