[Click Below for Full Description]

COCTEAU, Jean
[Paris: Edouard Champion (1925)]. 4to. Perhaps Cocteau's greatest illustrated book, consisting of thirty-one self-portraits, created while he was undergoing a disintoxication program for his addiction to opium. The drawings were produced as he stared relentlessly into a mirror for hours on end, attempting to come to terms with his chronic addiction and still mourning the loss of his beloved Raymond Radiguet. Many of the images also include text, some of it written backwards, creating a surrealistic effect. A beautiful copy of a superlative work of personal insight, created during the most creative period of Cocteau's life. Limited to 130 copies (and 10 on Japon), the sheets are laid into illustrated wrappers, with a decorative cardboard loose cover, as issued. Light wear to wrappers, small tear at foredge, internally very good. This copy (#102) is initialed by Cocteau on the colophon page. Housed in a fine decorative paper slipcase and chemise. Uncommon. Lewis, Sinclair
Typed letter signed by Lewis, dated September 28, 1925, with manuscript corrections. Folio, one leaf. Good content, writing in response to a writer for the International Book Review, who had defended his novel Arrowsmith in a letter printed in response to a negative review. "Not at all a bad thing to have a book interestingly damned and bring forth some reaction - as this review proved to do." Well preserved.

THOMAS, Dylan.
Swansea: , December 1925 & July 1926. The first printed example of Thomas's poetry 2 volumes, octavo, pp. [36]. Original blue and grey wrappers, wire-stitched as issued, titles and school crest printed in black to front wrapper. Text in English and Welsh. Contents of December issue loose. Faint soiling to wrappers, a little rusting to staples; in very good, remarkably well-preserved condition. The scarce first printed example of Thomas's poetry, a humorous 16-line poem entitled "The Song of the Mischievous Dog", written when he was just 11 years old and printed on p. 74 of the December 1925 issue of his school magazine. Thomas was in form 3A, a class which receives praise in the same issue as the leading football team in their year. Thomas is mentioned in the July 1926 issue for winning the school sports day under 15s mile handicap race at the age of 12: "the event of the afternoon was the winning of the Mile (under 15 years) by D. M. Thomas. Because of his age and size he had a long start; he ran so well however that he was further ahead at the finish than he was at the start" (p. 54). A copy of a photo of Thomas post-race in a local newspaper is included with the magazines. Thomas (1914–1953) enrolled at Swansea Grammar, where his father was Senior English master, in September 1925. He continued to contribute many poems to the magazine and from 1929 took on the role of editor. When he left the school in the summer of 1931, aged sixteen, Thomas went straight to work for the South Wales Daily Post. Copies of the Swansea Grammar School Magazine have been traced at auction … [Click Below for Full Description]

EDMONDS, James Edward, Brigadier-General et al.
London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, , 1925-48. a quarry of facts Octavo. 26 volumes, including book-style map cases, red cloth, title gilt to spines, all retaining dust jackets or sleeves. Profusely illustrated throughout, numerous maps to text volumes and in the map cases. Light rubbing and spotting to the cloth, some browning to the text blocks, the jackets and sleeves variably rubbed, a few chips and splits, but overall a miraculously preserved set. All but the first volume are first editions, that being a second impression, although styled the Second Edition. The jacket on this volume and its accompanying map case are for the third edition. An genuinely extraordinary set, odd volumes in jackets turn up, particularly the commoner earlier ones, to find a complete run of the text volumes would be quite a challenge, but the presence here of the sleeves on the eight map cases considerably raises the bar. Assembled over thirty years, with intent and opportunity, this would be a difficult task indeed to repeat today. A mammoth undertaking, nearly a quarter of a century in the making, Edmond's compilation was subject to criticism from the very beginning. Commenting on the volume covering the German Spring Offensive of 1918, Liddell Hart remarked, "What one is given Â… is a purely Trade Union point of view - it is not merely 'Patriotic' history but parochial history", it was "official" but not "history" (a letter to Edmonds quoted in Bond, The First World War and British Military History, pp.69-70). But others have been more sympathetic to the difficulties that he faced, and … [Click Below for Full Description]

A.A. Milne
fine book. Alan Alexander Milne (1925) 'When We Were Very Young', UK first deluxe edition, bound in blue leather (just like the original trade edition which was published in blue cloth), published by Methuen. In addition, an original letter handwritten and signed by author A.A. Milne. This is an extremely rare edition and certainly the least common of the four leather bound Winnie-the-Pooh books issued in a few hundred copies. 'When We Were Very Young' was originally published in 1924 as a regular trade edition only. It was immediately successful and the first printing sold out in one day. The publisher Methuen then decided to issue a deluxe leather bound version in three colours: blue, red, and green. The paper stock of the seventh printing of the trade edition (March 1925) was used for that purpose. In 1926 when 'Winnie-the -Pooh' was published it was issued as a deluxe leather bound edition in three colours as well keeping that tradition for the remaing two Pooh books. Condition: a fine and abolutely beautiful copy. No previous owner's scribbles inside, the leather binding is crsip and clean like on the day of publication. No rubbing to the gilding. Page block edges gilded as called for. The original glassine warpper is present and without any chips or tears, now of course yellowed as over 90 years have passed since publication! The original box is near fine with no structural damage at all and a whiff of foxing and darkening as to be expected. The best condition on the marekt and extremely rare to find as the vast majority of deluxe copies are the second editions which … [Click Below for Full Description]

The four men spent the period from mid-July to early Septetmber exploring the Magdalena Bay region in north west Spitsbergen. They crossed three new passes and ascended six peaks for the first time. The expedition travelled back from Spitsbergen aboard S.M.S. Zieten, then under the command of Alfred Ritscher. On his return, Grotewahl wrote a single paper with results from the expedition, and drew critisicm for squandering resources. However, his experiences in planning and running the expedition led him to look into the possibility of establishing a research base that would support future polar expeditions. This led to his foundation in July 1926 of the Archiv für Polarforschung at Kiel (today the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Polarforschung). Jean Tinguely
Bischofberger, 1925. You are bidding on the two volume definitive catalog of the works of Jean Tinguely. Jean Tinguely (22 May 1925 - 30 August 1991) was a Swiss sculptor best known for his kinetic art sculptural machines (known officially as metamechanics) that extended the Dada tradition into the later part of the 20th century.[1] Tinguely's art satirized automation and the technological overproduction of material goods. Born in Fribourg, Tinguely grew up in Basel, but moved to France in 1952 with his first wife, Swiss artist Eva Aeppli, to pursue a career in art. He belonged to the Parisian avantgarde in the mid-twentieth century and was one of the artists who signed the New Realist's manifesto (Nouveau réalisme) in 1960. His best-known work, a self-destroying sculpture titled Homage to New York (1960), only partially self-destructed at the Museum of Modern Art, New York City, although his later work, Study for an End of the World No. 2 (1962), detonated successfully in front of an audience gathered in the desert outside Las Vegas. Tinguely married fellow Swiss artist Eva Aeppli in 1951. In 1971, he married his second wife, Niki de Saint Phalle with whom he collaborated on several artistic projects, such as the Hon - en katedral or Le Cyclop. Tinguely died in 1991 at the age of 66 years in the Bern Hospital of heart failure. (Wikipedia) These two hardbound volumes are large (9" x 11"), printed on premium paper and in very good condition. Note: The original price paid for the book is written in pencil on the last page of each volume (see photo). The owner also applied a s … [Click Below for Full Description]

F. Scott Fitzgerald
Charles Scribner's Sons, 1925. See photos & item description for condition details. Up for sale is a first edition, first printing of "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald. This book was purchased from the son of the original owner, and it includes the original owner's book plate on the front pastedown page. Overall, the book is in great condition for its age. All first edition points noted on FEDPO's guide are present. I included a few of them in the photos. The cover boards are in good condition. The back cover board has what may be minor water damage to the top left corner, but I can't tell for sure. The spine has some fraying to the top and bottom. Also, the edges of the cover boards show some wear. There is very minor foxing and yellowing in random places in the book's pages. Also, this is present on the page edges. Pages 117, 118 and 183, 184 have a slight crease at the top where the original owner kept his place in the book. The book's first owner for an unknown reason wrote numbers in blue ink over the page numbers of some of the pages. I checked every page, and have noted this being the case on pages 89 (75), 94 (79), 101 (84,85), 115 (96), 116 (97), 118 (99), 121 (101), and 131 (110). The numbers in parentheses are the numbers written small in blue ink. Please review all photos and the item description carefully before making an offer or purchasing, and feel free to ask questions. Also, be sure to check out our other listings! Returns are allowed only due to damage in shipping.
