        Ralph 124C 41+. A Romance of the Year 2660

Stratford Co, Boston 1925 - First edition, binding A. Signed by Gernsback on the front free endpaper, with "Sincerely yours" added in a different hand. Illustrated with eleven black & white plates by Frank R. Paul. A novel of the future in which Gernsback intertwines a love story with predictions for the development of the world. Unlike his predecessors who also predicted the future in science fiction novels, Gernsback was a trained scientist who was not only one of the pioneers of television but the founder of the first pulp magazine devoted to science fiction. Ralph 124C 41+ was originally published in Modern Electrics, one of Gernsback's magazines. Faint rubbing to edges, else fine in blue cloth with the excessively rare dust wrapper, which shows a small stain to rear panel, minor chipping to spine tips, and few short closed tears, three of which are reinforced with cello tape. (Barron 1-37). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Caricature portrait of Karel Capek.

1925. Window-mounted and framed in an ebonized wood Czech Cubist-style frame, UV-resistant glass. Pencil on wove paper. Sheet size: 29 × 17.3 cm. Shows signs of having been somewhat crumpled at some point, old soft creases, slight soiling and occasional scuffing of the surface, a few short edge-splits at the top, but overall very good. Signed by both sitter and artist, this is a wonderful portrait from life of the great Czechoslovakian writer by that portmanteau nation's finest caricaturist. Commonly characterised as a writer of science fiction – his most famous work is probably The War with the Newts, described by influential critic Darko Suvin as "the pioneer of all anti-fascist and anti-militarist SF" (Smith, Twentieth-century Science Fiction Writers) – Capek's writing is ill-served by such pigeonholing. Arthur Miller, a youthful enthusiast for his work attempted to sum up Capek's unique appeal; "There was no writer like him … prophetic assurance mixed with surrealistic humour and hard-edged social satire: a unique combination … he is a joy to read" (Foreword to Smith, Toward a Radical Center: A Karel Capek Reader). Following the cession of the Sudetenland to Germany in September 1938, Capek, although identified by the Gestapo as an enemy of the Nazi state, refused to go into exile, and suffering from depression he succumbed to pneumonia just a couple of months later. His artist brother, Josef, with whom he had collaborated on a number of projects, was arrested soon after the Nazi invasion and sent to the camps. He died in Bergen-Belsen shortly before the end of the war. The artist Oscar Bergen was trained at the Berlin School of Art, and began his career on Germany, but he fled when Hitler came to power, settling in London where he worked for a number of newspapers and magazines including the Daily Telegraph, the News of the World, and Lilliput. After the war he emigrated to America where he became noted for his "kindly rather than critical" caricatures. A wonderful evocation of one of Czechoslovakia's cultural Golden Ages, though shadowed by the Age of Iron to come.

The Making of Americans Being A History of a Family's Progress

Paris: Contact Editions, Three Mountains Press, 1925. Tall octavo, section I (of IV), one of 400 copies of the Paris issue. 286 pages (of 928). Disbound, stitching intact, partially unopened. First printing of the first section of the work Stein considered her masterpiece, "the Long Book," published by Robert McAlmon's Contact Editions: "vital singularity is as yet an unknown product with us, we who in our habits, dress-suit cases, clothes and hats and ways of thinking, walking, making money, talking, having simple lines in decorating, in ways of reforming, all with a metallic clicking like the type-writing which is our only way of thinking, our way of educating, our way of learning, all always the same way of doing, all the way down as far as is there is any way down inside to us . . . machine making does not turn out queer things like us, they can never make a world to let us be free each one inside us." These pages are inscribed to close friend Henry McBride, "To Henry and to Henry from Gertrude," with McBride's book label affixed to verso of final leaf. Art critic McBride was a longtime champion of Stein's writing in the American press, using his column in the New York Sun to promote her experimental work. Early in their friendship, McBride advised Stein: "There is a public for you, but no publisher." As he foresaw, Stein would wait almost two decades to see the whole of The Making of Americans in print. A wonderful association copy, housed in a custom chemise and slipcase.

        The Great Gatsby.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons,, 1925. Octavo. Original dark green linen-grain cloth, titles to spine gilt, to front board in blind. With the original dust jacket. Housed in a blue quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Spine very slightly rolled; an excellent copy in bright cloth, in the jacket with some loss to foot of spine extending into panels, rear panel with additional 1 inch loss to lower left corner, a couple of shallow chips to head of front panel and spine, extremities rubbed and nicked, light mark to rear panel, nonetheless the iconic front panel presenting nicely. First edition, first printing, first state of the text, first issue dust jacket. The copy is the correct first printing, with "chatter" on p. 60, line 16, "northern" on p. 119, line 22, "it's" on p. 165, line 16, "away" on p. 165, line 29, "sick in tired" on p. 205, lines 9-10, and "Union Street station" on p. 211, lines 7-8; the jacket is the first printing, with lowercase "j" in "jay Gatsby" on the back at line 14 hand-corrected in ink. The iconic jacket was designed by Francis Cugat (1893–1981). Charles Scribner III ("Celestial Eyes - from Metamorphosis to Masterpiece") argues that not only is the jacket recognised as the most eloquent in American literary history, but that Cugat's artwork demonstrably had an effect on Fitzgerald's evolution of his literary masterpiece, as the author responded to sketches and artwork shown to him before the book was complete, a perhaps unique occurrence in literary history. Fitzgerald wrote to his publisher sometime in August 1924 from France: "For Christ's sake don't give anyone that jacket you're saving for me. I've written it into the book." Though artistically superb, the jacket included a misprint on the back panel that required hand-correction and it was left a little taller than the book itself. As a consequence almost all of the small number of examples that do survive have wear of some description at the edges.

[Loose Photographs]: 1925 Santa Barbara Earthquake

Santa Barbara, California, 1925. Near Fine. A collection of 18 silver gelatin photographs measuring 3.5" x 5.5" with some captions. Slightly curled else near fine.A collection of photographs detailing the aftermath of the 1925 earthquake in Santa Barbara, California. The photos show the ruined buildings around the city including the Marcos Building, Santa Barbara Hotel, and the Catholic Church. Whole buildings were reduced to rubble while other lost full sides of their buildings exposing the interior of the structure including one photo of hotel rooms after the side of the Santa Barbara hotel had collapsed. The earthquake killed 13 and destroyed Santa Barbara's downtown area but spared most of the residential homes, although every chimney "crumbled." One of the famous structures to be affected was the Potter Theater which was lost as a result of the quake and is seen here as a mess of rubble. Many of the rebuilt structures from this period are on the National Register due to their affiliations with famous architects who were invited to help with the rebuilding process. Some of these include James Osborne Craig, George Washington Smith, Carleton Winslow, Bertram Goodhue, and Winsor Soule. The immediate rescue efforts are seen here with outdoor bedding and cafeteria set up for those who were displaced by the earthquake.A modest but interesting collection portraying the aftermath of a devastating natural disaster.

A unique amateur magazine created by a commercial artist with cartoons, jokes, crossword puzzle, adventure story, a movie review with a ticket stub from the Knickerbocker Theatre in New York, and a reproduction of a drawing he did that was published in a magazine for the Chemcraft chemistry set. A charming handmade magazine by a talented, if now forgotten commercial artist.

Van Dongen] Victor Margueritte. La Garçonne. Exemplaire sur Hollande.

      - [Van Dongen] Victor Margueritte La Garçonne. Flammarion, 1925. Broché. 386 pages.

Octavo. Pictorial grey card wraps, design in red and black by Robert Bonfils to the front panel, floral patterned endpapers with advertisements, 24-page ad. section with illustrations. 7 double-page Exposition maps printed in blue ink, a transportation map printed in red and blue, 16 blue-tinted half-tone plates from photographs each with 2 images, mounted sample of "Tekko" simulated silk brocade upholstery fabric, loosely inserted flyers all printed by Vaugirard, for their own series of photogravure views of the exposition, Élie Richard's Le Guide des Grands Ducs, and an offer to be reclaimed at the Pavillon de Provence. A little rubbed, particularly on the joints, some creasing on the spine, corners a touch bumped, but overall a very good copy. First edition of this exhaustive guide to the exhibitors at the 1925 world's fair, instigated by the Societé des Artistes Décorateurs in their desire to achieve equal status with practitioners of the fine arts, and supported by the French government to provide a showcase for the style moderne - "modernism turned into fashion" (Encyclopaedia Britannica) - in architecture, interior decoration, furniture, glass, jewellery and other decorative arts. As one of the founders of the group, Belgian architect Frantz Jourdain, expressed it: "We … resolved to return Decorative Art, inconsiderately treated as a Cinderella or poor relation, only permitted to eat with the servants, to the important, almost preponderant place it occupied in the past, of all times and in all of the countries of the globe". Staged between April and October 1925, the event occupied the area between the esplanade of Les Invalides and the entrances of the Grand Palais and Petit Palais, and along both banks of the Seine, over 15,000 exhibitors from twenty countries and close to 16 million visitors. attended. As a result of the world-wide publicity garnered by the show the style moderne that it promoted became known as Art Deco. An excellently preserved, solid and attractive copy of this important document in the development of design in the early twentieth century.

Über quantentheoretische Umdeutung kinematischer und mechanischer Beziehungen" in Zeitschrift für Physik, 33, 1925, pp. 879-893

BOUND FIRST EDITION OF HEISENBERG'S SEMINAL 1925 PAPER LAYING THE THEORETICAL FOUNDATION OF QUANTUM MECHANICS. Written when he was 23, Heisenberg's new theory - "the starting point for quantum mechanics" -- "was based only on what can be observed, that is to say, on the radiation emitted by the atom. We cannot, he said, always assign to an electron a position in space at a given time, nor follow it in its orbit, so that we cannot assume that the planetary orbits postulated by Niels Bohr actually exist. Mechanical quantities, such as position, velocity, etc. should be represented, not by ordinary numbers, but by abstract mathematical structures called "matrices" and he formulated his new theory in terms of matrix equations" (DSB; Nobel Prize Committee). "In spite of its high-sounding name and its successful solutions of numerous problems in atomic physics, quantum theory, and especially the quantum theory of polyelectronic systems, prior to 1925, was, from the methodological point of view, a lamentable hodgepodge of hypotheses, principles, theorems, and computational recipes rather than a logical consistent theory. Every single quantum-theoretic problem had to be solved first in terms of classical physics; its classical solution had then to pass through the mysterious sieve of the quantum conditions or, as it happened in the majority of cases, the classical solution had to be translated into the language of quanta in conformance with the correspondence principle… In short, quantum theory still lacked two essential characteristics of a full-fledged scientific theory, conceptual autonomy and logical consistency" (Jammer, The Conceptual Development of Quantum Mechanics, 196). "In May 1925, Heisenberg took on a new and difficult problem, the calculation of the line intensities of the hydrogen spectrum. Just as he had done with Kramers and Bohr, Heisenberg began with a Fourier analysis of the electron orbits. When the hydrogen orbit proved too difficult, he turned to the anharmonic oscillator. With a new multiplication rule relating the amplitudes and frequencies of the Fourier components to observed quantities, Heisenberg succeeded in quantizing the equations of motion for this system in close analogy with the classical equations of motion. In June Heisenberg returned to Göttingen, where he drafted his fundamental paper [the paper offered], which he completed in July. In it, Heisenberg proclaimed that the quantum mechanics of atoms should contain only relations between experimentally observable quantities. The resulting formalism served as the starting point for the new quantum mechanics, based, as Heisenberg's multiplication rule implied, on the manipulation of ordered sets of data forming a mathematical matrix. "Max Born and his assistant, Pascual Jordan, quickly developed the mathematical content of Heisenberg's work into a consistent theory with the help of abstract matrix algebra. Confident of the correctness of the new theory, Heisenberg, Pauli, Born, Dirac, and others began applying the difficult mathematical formalism to the solution of lingering problems" (DSB). In 1932 he was awarded the Nobel Prize "for the creation of quantum mechanics". NOTE: We offer separately a three-volume set of Heisenberg, Born's and Jordan's papers, Volumes 33, 34, 35. ALSO INCLUDED: A major milestone in gravitational wave theory: the Czech physicist Guido Beck's discovery of a family of exact solutions to the equations of general relativity representing gravitational waves with cylindrical symmetry (called 'Beck vacua' or 'cylindrical gravitational waves'). "Zur Theorie Binärer Gravitationsfelder", pp. 713-738. ALSO INCLUDED: Born's "Zur Quantentheorie aperiodischer Vorgänge", pp. 479-508 and Jordan's "Bemerkungen zur Theorie der Atomstruktur", pp. 563-571. CONDITION & DETAILS: 8vo. Tightly bound in black cloth with some rubbing and scuffing of the boards; gilt-lettered at the spine. No library markings whatsoever. Internally fine with no marks.
