Ivanov, A.
Proletkul't, Moscow, 1927. 63, [1] pp. 17x13 cm. In original illustrated constructivist styled wrappers. Very good, some pages uncut. Small tears of the spine, some slight erosion of the staples, stamp on non-existent library on t.p., stamp "For review" on t.p. First and only edition. One of 1500 copies. Very rare. This little brochure is not only a beautiful example of Constructivism style applied to book design but also an interesting read giving an opportunity to understand the mindset of art workers and club organizers of the 1920s. In his first article, the author discusses what art is and how a new way of life of a Soviet man (namely, active creative process) influences his level of stress and what actions need to be taken to avoid burning out. In his second article, he talk more about creating an environment and taking actions to avoid said burning out. Even though the language and tone of these works are close to scientific, there are some suggestions that hopefully were useful for men of the past. Not found in Worldcat. Faulkner, true 1st edition, 1927,Boni and Liveright, in clamshell
1927. Very good for age (see pictures). No dust jacket, clamshell later production. Boni and Liveright is the first edition (Liveright is the 2nd edition). Free tracking information on every item. Ship same or following day from East Village Books in Manhattan. Over twenty years on Saint Mark's Place, in the literary heart of downtown. Look us up! Mosquitoes is a satiric novel by the American author William Faulkner. The book was first published in 1927 by the New York-based publishing house Boni & Liveright and is the author's second novel. Sources conflict regarding whether Faulkner wrote Mosquitoes during his time living in Paris, beginning in 1925 or in Pascagoula, Mississippi in the summer of 1926. It is, however, widely agreed upon that not only its setting, but also its content clearly reference Faulkner's personal involvement in the New Orleans creative community where he spent time before moving to France. The city of New Orleans and a yacht on Lake Pontchartrain are the two primary settings for the novel. Beginning and ending in the city, the story follows a diverse cast of artists, aesthetes, and adolescents as they embark on a four-day excursion aboard the motorized yacht, the Nausikaa, owned by a wealthy patron of the arts.

Lindbergh, Charles A.; Herrick, Myron T. (Introduction)
WE
New York, London: G.P. Putman's Sons, 1927. Malone, Robert James. First Edition, First Printing. Author's Presentation Edition, limited to 100 copies of which this is 'P4', quarto size, 308 pp., signed by Lindbergh and by publisher G.P. Putnams Sons, with the publisher's biographical pamphlet slipped in. The first printing from type not previously used in 1927, with subsequent printings from electrotypes taken from that type for the popular edition which was released several weeks prior to the limited Autograph edition; hence this is truly the first printing. Charles Augustus Lindbergh (1902-1974) was one of America's great heroes, famous for his Icarus-like achievements as a pilot. "WE" was written shortly after he achieved international stardom flying his renowned single-engine monoplane "Spirit of St. Louis" nonstop from New York to Paris, for which he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor; his first book, written early in his career, before conflict, conspiracy and tragedy tarnished his life and reputation. Publisher George Palmer Putnam (1887-1950) was an admirer of Lindbergh, and would go on to marry Amelia Earhart. With the attractive bookplate of Katie S. Matthews, engraved by New York jewelers Black, Starr and Frost (before 1929). Frontispiece a black and white etching by Robert James Malone (b. 1892) of an airplane centered by spotlights ascending from the earth, with the caption "And out of the night came a silver bird bearing a boy who carried letters of introduction to Paris". ___DESCRIPTION: Original half vellum and brown paper covered boards with vellu … [Click Below for Full Description]

Judge, Jr. [Norman Hume Anthony]
New York: Leslie-Judge Company, [1927]. 4th Printing. Twenty-fourmo size, 63pp. Norman Hume Anthony, cartoonist and illustrator, editor of Judge Magazine and, later, Life Magazine, authored this bar book during Prohibition in America. A predecessor of the 1930 "Savoy" cocktail book, which takes many recipes from "Here's How!", this book contains many popular cocktail recipes from the early twentieth century, accompanied by Anthony's witticisms in the form of suggested "toasts" to go with each drink, printed at the bottom of each page. This delightful volume shows the liveliness during the Prohibition era that pervaded the 1920s despite the laws in place (the Prohibition law would not be repealed until five years after this book was published). This book is the fourth printing of the first edition, printed in March 1927, two months after the first impression. ___DESCRIPTION: Full light blue paper with gilt lettering on the front board, blue endpapers, title page in orange and black with a black woodcut of a portrait of Judge Jr., facsimile of Judge Jr.'s signature at the end of the foreward, running headings with orange text and black decorative borders throughout, orange illustration on the colophon at the end of the book; twenty-fourmo size (5" by 3.25"), pagination: [1-4] 5-62 [1 colophon]. ___CONDITION: Volume is better than very good; with clean boards, straight corners with no rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; bottom corners are very gently bumped, extremely slight rubbin … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hickes, Francis (Translator); Phillimore, J. S. (Introduction); Gibbings, Robert (Illustrations)
[Waltham Saint Lawrence]: The Golden Cockerel Press, 1927. Gibbings, Robert. Limited Edition. No. 96 of 275 copies, folio size, [49] pp. Lucian of Samosata (ca. 125 AD - ca. 180 AD) was a Hellenized Syrian satirist and rhetorician whose works were quite popular in his time, and survive in a great quantity compared to his contemporaries. His "True History" is a self-admitted work of fiction, written in the second century AD, and remains his best-known work. The story was meant to be a satirical work, criticising contemporaries that presented mythical events as historical truths. "The True History" is considered by many to be the earliest known work of science fiction, and includes travel to outer space, alien creatures, and interplanetary battles. In this edition by the Golden Cockerel Press, probably the finest ever printed, engraver and book designer Robert Gibbings (1889-1958) has provided fine wood engravings to accompany the text, arranging the English translation within a carefully puzzled border made up of the original Greek text and the illustrations. The text is that of Francis Hickes (1565/6-1631), first published in 1634 by his son, three years after his father's death. Hickes spent his life devoted to translating Greek to English, though sadly none of his works were published during his lifetime. His translation of Lucien is done with loyalty and patience, translated directly from the original Greek. While it may lack some of the spirit and embellishment of North or Holland's later translations, its devoted simplicity is much more of an homage to the original tex … [Click Below for Full Description]

Publisher's orange quarter cloth over parchment boards with decorative stamping in gilt, green and red. Gold foil pastedowns. Offset toning to endpapers. Some uncut pages. This book was clearly hastily cut open by the previous owner. Wrinkling and minor loss to 3 pages not affecting text or illustrations. Five torn pages, one of them to edge of woodcut. Still a lovely book, and scarce on the market. Woodcuts by Wharton Esherick. Unpaginated. Folio. "The Song of Songs, also Song of Solomon or Canticles (Hebrew: Šîr HaŠŠîrîm, Greek and Ancient Greek: , romanized: Âisma ismát n; Latin: Canticum Canticorum), is one of the megillot (scrolls) found in the last section of the Tanakh, known as the Ketuvim (or "Writings"), and a book of the Old Testament. The Song of Songs is unique within the Hebrew Bible: it shows no interest in Law or Covenant or the God of Israel, nor does it teach or explore wisdom like Proverbs or Ecclesiastes (although it does have some affinities to wisdom literature, as the ascription to Solomon indicates); instead, it celebrates sexual love, giving "the voices of two lovers, praising each other, yearning for each other, proffering invitations to enjoy". The two are in harmony, each desiring the other and rejoicing in sexual intimacy; the women of Jerusalem form a chorus to the lovers, functioning as an audience whose participation in the lovers' erotic encounters facilitates the participation of the reader." --- Wikipedia [Attributes: First Edition … [Click Below for Full Description]

Original red buckram, pale blue dust-jacket partially faded to almost white as usual, with a second unfaded dust-jacket also present; both with David Jones wood engraving on upper panel. A very fine copy. [and] 4to, ix, 30, (5) pp. With 10 large wood engravings by David Jones. Original cloth-backed marbled boards, orange dust-jacket, as new with three prospectuses (one limited to 50 copies) and the extra suite of prints on Japon limited to 25 sets (see below). § A fascinating pair of copies of this very rare and important book, considered to be Jones's most important work and one of the great books of both presses. The first edition was limited to 275 copies on English handmade paper. With this copy comes a full-page typed letter from Robert Gibbings to the purchaser Henry Bergen dated Dec. 31st 1927, clearly responding to criticism from Bergen about the printing of the blocks. Gibbings lays the blame squarely on Jones: "though David Jones is an excellent artist he is not a first-rate craftsman and his blocks are most terribly difficult to print... He himself is also very disappointed with the result..." Gibbings goes on to mention technical aspects of the printing, paper dampening, etc. which caused problems. This archive reveals more than has ever been know about the problems with printing this book, long recognized as a masterpiece: "In the opinion of some, the engr … [Click Below for Full Description]

From wikipedia: Buffalo Soldiers originally were members of the 10th Cavalry Regiment of the United States Army, formed on September 21, 1866, at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. This nickname was given to the Black Cavalry by Native American tribes who fought in the Indian Wars. The term eventually became synonymous with all of the African American regiments formed in 1866: 9th Cavalry Regiment 10th Cavalry Regiment 24th Infantry Regiment 25th Infantry Regiment Although several African American regiments were raised during the Civil War as part of the Union Army (including the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry and the many United States Colored Troops Regiments), the "Buffalo Soldiers" were established by Congress as the first peacetime all-black regiments in the regular U.S. Army.[1] On September 6, 2005, Mark Matthews, the oldest surviving Buffalo Soldier, died at the age of 111. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.[2] From the website: Southwest Association of Buffalo Soldiers: The 25th Infantry: (Black Bicycle Corps, Lt. Black turkey morocco, ribbon-tied, initials in gilt, watered silk endpapers, interleaved with tissue sheets. Near fine in very good original black cloth clamshell box with ribbon pull-out for lifting the oversized album out of the box. This is "Chamor" the home and family of Dr. August Carl Morck (1859-1925), an optometrist, inventor of bifocal improvements and a prominent citizen in Oil City, Pennsylvania. The house was built circa 1876 and was first the property of businessman Wesley Chambers, before Morck married into the family. The structure underwent a Colonial Revival-style remodeling ca. 1915. The house also includes some architectural decorative elements and furnishings in the Arts and Crafts style. The house along with others in the Oil City South Side Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. Sax Rohmer
1927. None, None, n.d. Manuscript. Unbound. The typescript is in excellent condition, just a clip mark to the first and last sheet. 78pp. The typescript covers approximately 1/3 of the novel, starting at page 216 and finishing at page 310 (the final page). The conent varies widely. It's unclear whether the Emperor of America was an expansion of Murder in Manhattan, but the latter does present reasonably well by itself as a single piece, though more likely the final part of three or four (the Emperor of America was published in 1927 in Collier's but with a lack of a copy to hand and online archive unavailable due to copyright the comparison cannot be made). Rohmer did rework a lot of earlier material which culminated in The Emperor of America, so it's likely this (or an instance thereof) played a part in that process. No amendments, except where 'centre' has been switched to the American spelling. The book is very good with some bumping to the spine tips and a slight lean. The jacket presents well but has a few flaws (damage to upper crease resulting in a few holes, slice to rear, corners chipped, a little damp staining to interior). Rohmer manuscript material is uncommon in recent commerce. Phil Stephenson-Payne reports the present mss having sold in 1999 at Sotheby's for $600. [7775, Hyraxia Books]. n.d.

Nauta, Y. K. (1865-1928)
Amsterdam, 1927. Hardcover. Cloth. . Very Good. A brilliantly conceived and executed illustrated, and illuminated, manuscript, full of visual treats and surprises -- illustrations within illustrations, many a miniaturist touch in the capturing of detail, a whimsicality fused with a realness, and the fine blending of humor and horror. Folio, 37 by 31.5 cm. Unpaginated. 15 pages with content, all mounted, all with brilliant painted illustrations. After title page, text entirely on versos, which also have lavish surrounding and sometimes underlying illustrations. Text written with a calligraphic hand, with letter devices and other interwoven decoration. Facing rectos are all fully painted plate illustrations, without text. Title is rich in gold leaf decoration, with elaborate decoration, ornamental lettering, and vignette renderings of the devil and angels. Following we are launched into the narrator's dream, which is told in verse, with illustrations very ably relating the story even without. In the dream, the narrator imagines he dies and gets dragged to hell by the devil. There he is flogged at the stake amid shooting flames. Nonetheless the thought of the narrator's wife enables him to forget his pain and to laugh. Impressed, the devil strikes a bargain with the man -- if the man works as a stoker of the fires of hell during the day, the man could dine and sleep in heaven, where he can play cards with the saints, sing psalms with the devout, drink wine. However, the man must return to hell by 8 A.M. sharp to resume his work obligations there. The actual … [Click Below for Full Description]
