"With the writer's compliments" in pen. The two other Belling offprints are: Single and Double Rings at the Reduction Division in Uvularia (1926); The Attachments of Chromosomes at the Reduction Division in Flowering Plants (1927). Letter is folded with bottom left corner cut away. The letter reads: ?I wish to thank you for your papers, especially for the copy of the Chromosome hypothesis applied in Linkage in Lathyrus & Primula. I have met with at least 3 cases of linkage in my own work. I sent a short paper to Punnet, of Cambridge, England, some months ago, pointing out how the results of my work and that of others was dead against the Cambridge hypothesis of somatic segregation, but he did not care to publish it. It seems to me strange that a critical biologist like Bateson should have led his followers in the assumption of such an unsupported and barren hypothesis. Columbia University is leading the world in this line of work. Yours truly, John Belling Botanist??Bridges was an American scientist, known for his contributions to the field of genetics. Along with Alfred Sturtevant and H.J. Muller, Bridges was part of the famous fly room of Thomas Hunt Morgan at Columbia University.? Wikipedia?Belling used plants such as lilies and hyacinths to demonstrate that segments between non-homogenous chromosomes can interchange. He was able to make accurate estimates of chromosome numbers and prop … [Click Below for Full Description]

[WOMEN TRAVELERS]. Freycinet, Rose Marie Pinon De Saulces De.
Paris: Société d'Editions Géographiques, Maritimes, et Coloniales, 1927. First edition. 4to, original red gilt-pictorial cloth rebacked with the original spine laid on, gilt lettering. 25 plates (six color and three folding). ¶ An account of an important French voyage to South America and the Pacific from 1817 to 1820, sponsored by Napoléon. This version is unusual for it was written by the wife of the ship's captain "a rare female passenger on a naval voyage, and it remained unpublished for nearly a century. Smuggled on board because she could not bear to be separated from her husband, Rose's presence was made public to the crew only after the vessel was well out of sight of the French coast. . . . It is clear from her journal that Rose fashioned herself a good sailor and enjoyed life at sea . . . [and] it reveals a young and vivacious woman who made keen observations of the peoples and places she encountered" - Hill. Her husband named an island in the Somoan chain, Rose Atoll, after her. Paper a little toned; a couple of margins with small chips; edges of the binding slightly rubbed; very good copy.

Ernst, Max, Maler (1891-1976).

WAUGH, Evelyn]
Privately Printed, 1927. First edition, sole printing, limited to sixty copies "for private circulation". Folio. Original marbled paper covered boards with one of the Crease designs stamped on the front board. A near fine copy with just a trace of wear to the spine ends. Pictorial title page plus 33 further Beardsley-esque designs by Francis Crease. Francis Crease was Evelyn Waugh's private art tutor while at Lancing, teaching him painting, calligraphy and graphic design. Waugh called him "one of two characters who were equal and opposite influences on my adolescence. a secret man" (A Little Learning). He also had some regard for Crease as an artist as a letter to Dudley Carew of 1922 attests, ".a wider outlook has given me a far larger realisation of Crease's designs. I am convinced now that that man is a great artist. Before I hung my admiration on his character & did not understand his work fully. It is really great Carey. I am now convinced of that." Although Waugh's contribution is merely listed as a preface, it is the sole text of the book, thus staking a claim to be considered his second published work (after PRB) and preceding all of his fiction. STEWART, Thomas Dale
1927. A group of 97 photographs taken by Thomas Dale Stewart and his associates in Alaska while on an expedition to study the Cup'it Eskimos. Most are approximately 4" x 6", many are captioned on the verso. Thomas Dale Stewart, a protégée of Ale? Hrdlicka, was one of the founders of modern forensic anthropology. He attended George Washington and Johns Hopkins, and began work for the Smithsonian Department of Anthropology in 1924. In 1927, he went to Alaska to work with Henry Collins, primarily on Nunivak Island, Nash Harbor, and Cape Etolin in the Bering Sea, some of the most isolated places in Alaska, to study and measure the people and make excavations in the area of the Nunivak Island Cup'it Eskimos, the first time anthropologists had studied the area in any detail. Their measurements of 180 living Eskimos, and 178 skulls was published by Hrdlicka. Stewart was later appointed Head Curator of the Department of Anthropology, and later Director of the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. He did important work on anthropometry, early man, and forensic anthropology, and later was the primary consultant to the FBI for forensic anthropology. The breakdown of the photographs is as follows: 36 anthropological studies of Eskimos, each captioned; 20 on the sites of the diggings showing skulls, campsite, etc.; 25 images of the general area of the diggings; 14 images of native peoples in general scenes, working and in their village; two walrus photos - one of a dead walrus, the other of an elaborately carved tusk. Octavo, original cloth, illustrated with numerous maps (many folding), charts, facsimiles, photographs. Boldly signed by Winston Churchill on the front free endpaper. In near fine condition. Churchill's American biographer William Manchester purported The World Crisis to be Churchill's masterpiece. The work was published over a period of eight years, resulting in a final six-volume, 3,261-page account of the Great War, beginning with its origins in 1911 and ending with its repercussions in the 1920s. Magnificently written, it is enhanced by the presence of the author at the highest councils of war and in the trenches as a battalion commander. In agreement with Manchester, British historian Robert Rhodes James wrote of the work: For all its pitfalls as history, The World Crisis must surely stand as Churchill’s masterpiece. As first lord of the admiralty and minister for war and air, Churchill stood resolute at the center of international affairs. In this classic account, he dramatically details how the tides of despair and triumph flowed and ebbed as the political and military leaders of the time navigated the dangerous currents of world conflict. Churchill vividly recounts the major campaigns that shaped the war: the furious attacks of the Marne, the naval maneuvers off Jutland, Verdun's "soul-stirring frenzy," and the surprising victory of Chemins des Dames. Here, too, he re-creates the dawn of modern warfare: the buzz of airplanes overhead, tren … [Click Below for Full Description]

JORDAN, PASCUAL; KLEIN, OSKAR
Berlin: Julius Springer, 1927. First edition. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS of Jordan and Klein's introduction of the "second quantization"; one of the founding papers of quantum field theory. FROM THE LIBRARY OF NIELS BOHR, with his stamp on the front wrapper. In Jordan's "paper with Klein, written while the two of them were in Copenhagen in the spring of 1927, a generalization of Dirac's treatment of bosons was given to allow for the interaction of the bosons with one another. Their point of departure was a Schrödinger equation for the field operator containing a nonlinear term to account for the interaction of the field itself... "The equivalence of this description with that using symmetric wave functions in configuration space was established. The 'particles' that emerged from the imposition of the quantum condition (commutation rules) on the field variables thus obeyed Bose statistics. Heisenberg found the results of Jordan and Klein very attractive. In his interview with Kuhn and Heilbron in 1963, he recalled: 'I like[d it] very much because now I could see, "All right. There is an entirely different picture to start with (the wave picture), and if I quantize that picture--that is if I make this picture open to the same restriction as the particle picture--then the two pictures become equivalent." That is exactly what I wanted' (Heisenberg 1963, session 8, p. 21). "Bohr at the Solvay meeting of 1927 saw Jordan and Klein's work as supporting his views of complementarity. Pauli at that same congress welcomed the formulation since it allowed to formulate the quantu … [Click Below for Full Description]

Chaney, Lon (starring); Benjamin Christensen (director, story writer); Bradley King, Joseph Farnham (screenwriters); Barbara Bedford (starring)
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer [MGM], Beverly Hills, CA. Draft script for the 1927 silent film "Mockery," seen here under two early draft titles "Terror" and "The Harelip." Lon Chaney is a half-witted Russian peasant who is promised food and a place to live if he escorts a Countess (Bedford) safely home. He does so, despite becoming caught up in the Bolshevik revolution, and even moreso in a case of terminally unrequited love for the countess. Danish director Christensen is best known for his avant garde work, and in particular the seminal documentary, "Haxan: Witchcraft through the Ages" (1922). Between 1922 and 1929 Christensen made films for MGM and Warner Brothers/First National, this being one of his last silent films. Like many of the films from the silent era, many unusually bold turns are made, with many touches that affirm Christensen's status as an auteur. The film was rediscovered and restored in the 1970s. Tan titled wrappers, rubber-stamped copy No. 0378 and production No. 1608, dated May 18, 1927, with credits for screenwriter Bradley King. Title page integral with the first page of the text, dated May 17, 1927, with credits for screenwriters Bradley King and Benjamin Christensen. 133 leaves, with unnumbered leaves. Ditto style mimeograph duplication. Pages Very Good plus, wrapper Good bound with two gold brads. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
