Spluga della preta. Raccolta di 9 fotografie originali relative all'esplorazione avvenuta nel settembre 1926

s.e, 1926. ITA

Le film vi?rge Pathé. Manuel de développement et de tirage.

Paris: Pathe-Cinema, 1926. Early Cinematographic Manual with Developed Film Samples Pathé-Cinéma. Le film vi?rge Pathé. Manuel de développement et de tirage. 8vo. xii, 155 pp. 6 leaves of plates containing 107 examples of film (some colored). Paris: Etablissements Pathé-Cinéma, 1926. 239 x 155 mm. Original publisher’s quarter morocco, marbled boards, lower corners just a bit bumped, very slight edgewear. Fine copy. Former owner’s signature on flyleaf.First Edition of this rare technical manual of motion picture film developing and printing, issued by the famous French firm founded by the Pathé brothers in the early days of cinematography. By the 1920s the Pathé firm was producing “the requisites for the entire motion picture process; i.e., raw stock, cameras, laboratory equipment, studio and projectors” (Jenkins, “History of the Motion Picture” [1920], reprinted in Fielding [ed.], Technological History of Motion Pictures and Television, pp. 1-6). The firm’s manual contains detailed technical instructions on motion picture film development and printing, as well as information on several Pathé innovations such as the Pathé-Baby 9.5 mm. motion picture projectors and cameras for amateur use (introduced in 1922), Pathé’s “film inversible” (reversal film), and the firm’s techniques for tinting film stock and for producing full-color motion pictures. A stunning feature of the manual is its set of 107 actual frames of motion picture film, illustrating correct and incorrect development, the effect of temperature on film processing, and the various uses of the “teintures Pathés” with which the firm colored its film stock. The manual’s introduction contains a brief (and adulatory) history of the Pathé firm, and the first chapter is devoted to a description of its factory in Vincennes.

        THE HAUNTING HAND

New York: The Macaulay Company, [1926]., 1926. First edition. First edition. Author's first of three mystery novels. Fine, bright, tight copy in price-clipped, bright dust jacket with minor wear to the spine ends and corners and with a small bruise at the upper third of the spine panel. Frontispiece and dust jacket art by George W. Gage. The author's first novel, and the first of three mystery novels he would go on to write between 1926 and 1935. Roberts, a native Jamaican, is described as an author of mixed racial heritage, whose Haunting Hand is generally credited as being the first mystery novel written by an African American. More of a weird menace novel with many elements of the traditional mystery novel, THE HAUNTING HAND is set in Astoria, New York involving players within the silent film industry. A rarity in dust jacket, particularly such a striking example. OCLC notes fewer than 20 holdings in U. S. institutions. Roberts (1886-1962) was a prolific writer, poet, novelist, journalist, and historian. Among his major accomplishments, in addition to the three mystery novels, was laying the groundwork for Jamaican independence

        Le chameau. En 2 volumes.

Paris, J.B. Baillière and sons (colophon: E. Dessaint), 1925-1926. - 2 vols. (25 x 17 cm). 748 pp. (4), 207, (1) pp. With 98 plates (numbered I-LXXXVII [part 1] and LXXXVIII-XCVIII [part 2]) and some illustrations in text. Later light brown cloth. First and only edition of an extensive work on camels by commander Gaston Cauvet (1860-1950?). The first volume deals with the camel's origins and habitat (covering west and central Europe, including Russia, Greece and Cyprus; Cuba; North and South America; Africa; Australia and Java), its anatomy and physiology, the different breeds (including dromedaries), external features and internal organs, its nature and character, nutrition, diseases and their gaits. On many of those subjects, including the digestive system and the reproductive system of male camels this book was one of the earliest accounts, and it is still a valuable reference work. Other topics covered in this volume are the use of camels for transportation, the uses of their meat, fur, skin, bones and milk, and their economic use and value (covering pilgrimages, weddings, wars and raids). Volume 2 deals with camels in the history of the Middle East (including Egyptians, Persians, Macedonians, Arabs, Berbers, Mongolians and Turks) and with their role in religion, covering Hinduism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam, with a large section on the importance of the camel for the prophet Mohammed and for Muslims. Also covered is the camel in Arabic and French literature, and in art. - A very good copy. Mukasa-Mugerwa, The camel (camelus dromedarius): a bibliographical review, p. 11. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Biblia, Das Ist: Die Gantze Heilige Schrifft - Deudsch, D. Martin Luther (5 volumes)

Bremer Presse [1926-1928] - An extraordinary publication by the Bremer Press of the "Martin Luther Bible". Translated by Luther directly from the Greek during his enforced sequestration in Wartburg Castle (1521-22), it was first published in 1545 and he continued to edit and refine his translation up to his death the following year. Translating directly from the Greek was a marked departure for the academics of the day, who relied on the Latin Vulgate translation and used Latin for their studies with Greek seldom used or even taught. Luther chose to translate from the Greek into the vernacular German language of the day, making the scriptures accessible to everyday people and, at the same time, providing a vehicle for a more unified German language. The Bremer Press, known for its interrelation of scholarship, type design, and book design, has provided a version of the Luther Bible edited by Professor Carl von Kraus (1868-1952), Professor of German Philology at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. (N.B., above info from Wiki and Ransom). ***DESCRIPTION: Set of five volumes, complete; Volume I: Die Bucher Mose; Volume II: Das Ander Teil des Alten Testaments; Volume III: Das Dritte Teil des Alten Testaments; Volume IV: Die Propheten; and Volume V: Das Neue Testament. The text is continuous, with no chapter or verse indications save in the bottom margin of each page; each book of text is delineated with its own sectional title page, each opens with a four- or five-line initial capital letter designed by Anna Simons. This set is bound in ivory tinted boards with the single word "Biblia" in gilt on the front, black leather spines, double raised bands, single gilt rule at the head and tail, "Biblia" and the volume number in gilt; top edges gilt, fore- and bottom edges rough-cut; endpapers of light tan laid paper; in the style of the Bremer Press (as with the Doves Press) the interior is free of illustration or ornamentation, the focus is on the integrity of design of the type and the overall work. Folio size (almost 14" tall) with the volumes unpaginated, printed on Zanders hand-made paper, special black-letter cut for this edition. Limited edition of 365 copies per Ransom, with each volume in this set numbered differently (Vol. I unnumbered, Vol. II - no. 56, Vol. III - no. 142, Vol. IV - no. 300, and Vol. V - no. 289). ***CONDITION: Fine, as new, the set appears never to have been used. Each volume has a strong, square text block, solid hinges, perfectly straight corners with no rubbing, the interiors are clean and bright, and all volumes are entirely free of prior owner markings. The slipcases are very good with overall minor soiling and edgewear, one of the five has a single split seam, approximately 3 inches long. ***CITATION: Ransom, Bremer Press no. 36. ***POSTAGE: Please note that due to the size and weight of this set additional postage will apply; we are happy to ship at cost to both domestic and international addresses, please contact us for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.         Turbott Wolfe

New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company. Near Fine in Good dj. (c.1926). First American Edition. Hardcover. NOISBN . [extremely light bumping to a couple of corners, no other significant wear, vintage price sticker and bookseller's label (from the famous San Francisco department store The White House) on rear pastedown; jacket has shallow chipping along bottom edge (both panels and spine), also a bit at the upper corners, and the rear flap, which had been detached, has been expertly re-attached by a professional paper conservator]. Plomer's remarkable debut novel, published when he was just 23, deals with "the experiences of an over-sensitive Englishman in Africa -- Africa with its burning sun, luxuriant vegetation, its superstition, and the cruelty and stupidity of its white invaders," with its title character described by one latter-day critic as "a bizarre combination of Gatsby and Prufrock (and a possible genius)." When the book was reprinted a decade ago, Nadine Gordimer declared in a new introduction that it is "an inexplicable lapse on the part of literary scholars and critics that 'Turbott Wolfe' is not recognised as a pyrotechnic presence in the canon of renegade colonialist literature along with Conrad.? It caused a furor in South Africa upon its publication (by Leonard and Virginia Woolf's Hogarth Press), for its frank depiction of interracial love, and for daring to criticize the country's whites and their supposed benevolence toward the black population. Although born in South Africa, Plomer spent most of his childhood in England before returning with his family to the country (a British dominion until 1931), where he eventually became involved (with Laurens van der Post and Roy Campbell) in the short-lived magazine "Voorslag" ("Whiplash"), through which they intended to agitate in favor of racial equality. Local outrage over that publication and "Turbott Wolfe" itself led to Plomer's departure from South Africa in 1926; after several years in Japan, he returned to England, where his friendship with the Woolfs facilitated his acceptance into the British literary establishment. Although he wrote relatively little fiction other than short stories after 1934, he was a prolific reviewer, poet and essayist, and had a good deal of influence as the chief reader for publisher Jonathan Cape. He also collaborated (as librettist on several works) with composer Benjamin Britten, and published two autobiographies. The American edition of this landmark novel is much less common than the original Hogarth Press issue, and boasts a colorful dust jacket designed by Winold Reiss, a German-born American artist and graphic designer whose work showed the influence of Native American art and culture. [PLEASE NOTE that the rear jacket flap has been reattached by a professional paper conservator.] [This item is featured in ReadInk's E-Catalog 3.1, which can be perused in full at our website.
