The Sun Also Rises

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1926. First edition, first issue of the first printing, with the misprint ("stoppped") on page 181 line 26. Octavo, original black cloth. Rubbing to the spine, bottom and crown of the book panels, a good example. The Sun Also Rises was published by Scribner's in 1926, and a year later in the United Kingdom by Jonathan Cape under the title Fiesta. Though it initially received mixed reviews, it is now "recognized as Hemingway's greatest work" (Meyers, 1985). The fictional plot depicts a love story between war-wounded and impotent Jake Barnes and the promiscuous divorcée Lady Brett Ashley, but the novel is a roman à clef; the characters are based on real people and the action is based on real events. Hemingway proposes that the "Lost Generation," considered to have been decadent, dissolute and irretrievably damaged by World War I, was resilient and strong. Naturally, themes of love, death, renewal in nature, and the nature of masculinity are heavily investigated. For example, the characters engage in bull-fighting, which is presented as an idealized drama: The matador faces death and, in so doing, creates a moment of existential nothingness, broken when he vanquishes the possibility of death by killing the bull (Stoltzfus, 2005). The Sun Also Rises is seen as an iconic modernist novel for future generations (Mellow, 1992), although it has been emphasized that Hemingway was not philosophically a modernist (Reynolds, 1990). "The Sun Also Rises is Hemingway's masterpiece--one of them, anyway--and no matter how many times you've read it or how you feel about the manners and morals of the characters, you won't be able to resist its spell. This is a classic that really does live up to its reputation" (David Laskin).

        All the Sad Young Men.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1926. First edition, first issue. Octavo, original green cloth. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with light rubbing to the spine crown. All the Sad Young Men is the third collection of short stories written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, published by Scribners in February 1926. Fitzgerald wrote the stories at a time of disillusionment. He was in financial difficulty, he believed his wife Zelda was romantically involved with another man, she had suffered a series of physical illnesses, and his play The Vegetable had been a failure. Upon publication--and somewhat belying the notion that Fitzgerald's most famous novel had not been enthusiastically received--the New York Times wrote, "The publication of this volume of short stories might easily have been an anti-climax after the perfection and success of 'The Great Gatsby' of last Spring. A novel so widely praised -- by people whose recognition counts -- is stiff competition. It is even something of a problem for a reviewer to find new and different words to properly grace the occasion. It must be said that the collection as a whole is not sustained to the high excellence of 'The Great Gatsby,' but it has stories of fine insight and finished craft." Ironically, in a letter nine months earlier, Fitzgerald had advised his editor Max Perkins against publicizing the book through the newspaper. "Rather not use advertising appropriation in Times--people who read Times Book Review won't be interested in me."

Paris, 1926. 8vo. original printed wrappers. Inner front hinge a little fragile, but a very well preserved, clean, and fresh copy. Richly illustrated throughout. Inscribed to half-title: "Hommage de l'auteur/ Dr. Noël/ 31 rue Marbeuf/ Paris". (2), 84 pp. + final blank.. Rare first edition; inscribed by the author, of the only work published by the first female plastic surgeon, Pioneer and innovator of several surgical procedures, Suzanne Noël's groundbreaking contribution to the modernization of cosmetic surgery, and the first work to deal with the social aspects of plastic surgery. "[I]t is almost mandatory to refer to one of the most remarkable people and the first woman in the history of aesthetic surgery. An early pioneer in the development of facelifting and eyelid plastic techniques was Madame le Dr. A. (Suzanne) Noël, whose book "La Chirurgie Esthétique: Son Rôle Social" appeared in 1926. A German translation of this book appeared 6 years later..." (Gonzales-Ulloa, The Creation of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, p. 17).The work constitutes one of the first richly illustrated works of plastic surgery and is among the very first to contain before- and after-pictures. It is furthermore one of the very first medical books devoted solely to plastic surgery published in the 20th century."Noël stated that her interest in cosmetic surgery began in 1912 when one of the great ectresses of France returned from America after a triumphant tour. All of the newspapers remarked how, by means of practical operation of the scalp, she had regained a surprising youthfulness. Thus some type of facelifting procedure was already being performed in America before or at least during 1912 by a surgeon or surgeons not identified by name. Impressed by these newspaper reports, Noël pinched the skin of her own face with her fingers in different places and in different directions to try to adjust the skin folds, She was surprised by what she was able to accomplish by merely lifting her facial skin with her fingers so she began to study this question seriously. Noël devised wooden clips, experimented with them in living anesthetized rabbits, and found that when applied to the skin the clips produced the same "lifting results" as she had previously achieved with her fingers... Her cosmetic surgery book was the only one of the five mentioned previously that included numerous photographs - 59 pre- and postoperative photographs of the results of her skillful surgery. Among those subjects described in detail in a book containing 11 operative illustrations and 51 photographs of technique for surgical correction are baggy eyelids, facial, forehead, eyelid, and neck wrinkles; and double chins. Also discussed are correction of redundant neck skin by massive excision of skin and scalp tissue and the nape of the neck and in the suboccipital scalp region.; the excision of large nevi (hairy and otherwise) of the breast, neck, and posterior auricular regions; the correction of keloidal burn scars of the neck, of flabby tissues of the arms of ageing women, and of protruding ears; and the excision of forearm tattoos." Shirvanskaias danashauli. The Crime of Princess Shirvanskaias. First edition.

Moscow: 1926 - Original color lithograph poster from the collection of Alma Law. Repaired by Sasha Mosolov and mounted on a support sheet. No losses. 102 x 71.5 cm. The best and rarest of the Stenberg posters. From CineMaterial:The Stenberg brothers Vladimir (1899-1982) and Georgii (1900-1933) were Soviet artists and designers. While born in Moscow, both remained Swedish citizens until 1933 because their father was a Swede. The innovative visual aspects of their posters included a distortion of perspective, elements from Dada photomontage, an exaggerated scale, a sense of movement, and a dynamic use of color and typography. Their artwork was frequently based on stills from the films.Radical even today, the posters by the brothers working together were realized within the nine-year period from 1924 to 1933, the year Georgii died at age 33. His motorcycle hit a truck, a few months after the brothers had become Russian citizens. Vladimir continued to work on film posters and organized the decorations of Moscow's Red Square for the May Day celebration of 1947._______________Directed by Ivane Perestiani Maria Shirai Maria Shirai . [Original art posters]: Crouse-Irving Flower Guild Easter Formal

[Syracuse, New York]. 1926. Two posters featuring original art. Measuring 19.5" x 30" and 20" x 29". Both are pen and ink with watercolor on stiff board. While unexamined out of the frames they appear near fine with some light toning and a few scattered smudges; one poster with six tack holes at the perimeter from when it was originally displayed. The posters promote the 1926 Easter Formal hosted by the Flower Guild of the Crouse Irving Hospital and Nursing School held on April 10th at the Onondaga Ballroom. Each poster features Jazz Age flappers with bobbed haircuts in shoulder-baring dresses, one playfully pulling up her dress to reveal her slip and bare knees(!), and the other dancing in the spotlight in front of a large Art Deco window to, we assume, Jimmy Day's Nighthawks, the local Syracuse jazz band listed on the posters. Both are signed in the lower right corners by the individual artists. A charming pair of unique Jazz Age posters displaying the popular iconography of the Twenties Flapper. .

Allo! Paris!

- Monod 3581. The Artis and the book 72. - "Between 1922 and 1928, Delaunay executed five lithographs based on earlier paintings. The prints, like the paintings, exemplify Delaunay`s engagement with the dynamism of Paris, as embodied primarily in its architecture. Favoring monochromatic drawings and prints over the brilliant color for which he was best known, the artist relied instead on chiaroscuro effects in concert with rhythmically placed lines and patterns. Delaunay drew throughout his career with the liquid tusche and greasy black crayon commonly used for lithography, so the process of making prints was not a great departure for him. In all, he made approximately thirty-five lithographs, most of which were book illustrations. A Parisian publisher had planned to include The Eiffel Tower in a portfolio of lithographs by Delaunay, with a text by French novelist Joris-Karl Huysmans, but the project was never completed. As the world`s tallest monument at the time, the Eiffel Tower was for Delaunay a symbol of both modernity and masculinity, and he depicted it time and again. He was among the first artists to focus on this landmark as a subject, and it appears throughout his illustrated book Allo! Paris, with text by Joseph Delteil. Delaunay`s more well-known, purely abstract imagery, comprising concentric, curved, and segmented bands, appears only rarely in his prints" (Jennifer Roberts. MOMA). - Papierbedingt leicht gebräunt, Vortitel stärker gebräunt. Teils unaufgeschnitten. Schönes kaum fleckiges Exemplar. Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 900 Kl.-4°. Nightfall

1926. unbound. Drypoint. Signed in pencil. 19 in an edition of 150. Image measures 6 x 8". Sheet measures 9.5 x 11". This etching shows a peaceful waterfront scene at dusk. In the foreground, a bird skims along the surface of the water with its wings outstretched, dragging its feet among the fine reeds. Above, another bird glides in the dimming sky, which has been beautifully depicted with gestural lines. The shadowy trees reflected in the water indicate the setting of the sun. This image is from the second state of the print. It is a bright impression in excellent condition with full margins and no chips or tears.

Frank W. Benson (1862--1951) was an American Impressionist and Realist artist known best for his work in painting, watercolor, and etching. He got his start as a portrait and mural artist for the Library of Congress and found success as a painter of Academic Realist portraits. Around the turn of the century, his summers in New Hampshire inspired him to take an interest in plein-air Impressionism, with a particular interest in the capture of light and natural surroundings. Yet it is perhaps for his etchings of wildlife for which Benson is most famous, and in particular his etchings of wild fowl, which won him both critical and popular acclaim as well as a place in art history as one of the foremost printmakers of the 20th century. This beautiful image of birds demonstrates what made Benson such a successful and valued artist.
