Bludenz und das Brandnertal". Aquarelliertes Vogelschaupanorama von Eugen Felle.

(Isny, Eugen Felle, 1926). - 205 x 380 mm.

        Blues

1926 - HANDY, W.C., editor. Blues. An Anthology. New York: Albert & Charles Boni, 1926. Folio (9 by 12 inches), original black and purple cloth. $1500.First edition of this classic jazz anthology featuring text as well as piano/vocal parts, inscribed in the year of publication: "To Miss Lydia G. Fraser, with best wishes, W.C. Handy. 5-10-'26."The editor of this work, W.C. Handy, was a famous jazz musician and composer. Blues: An Anthology was the first book on the blues for a general audience. Handy intended for this illustrated book to be accessible, to contain compelling music and to, above all, foster a love and respect for jazz. His methods work and it was reprinted throughout the 20th century. "Handy may not have 'fathered' the blues". nor did he write true 'blues' songs of the type that were performed by country blues musicians. But he did write one of the most popular songs of the 20th century, which introduced blues tonalities and themes to popular music. His influence on stage music and jazz was profound" (ANB).         A.A. Milne references the bible, comparing bankers to Jacob's story

Chelsea, UK: , c. 1926. Chelsea, UK, c. 1926. 5.5" x 7.5". "Single page ALS, signed in full signature ""A.A. Milne,"" undated, but c. 1926, 5.5""x 7.5"" on stationary with letterhead of 13, Mallord Street, Chelsea, S.W.3. Tel Kensington 2074. Expected center fold. Scattered very soft handling marks to outer edges. Near fine condition.A warm humorous letter written to Vincent Seligman, a close family friend, and one of whom Milne would maintain close connections to for his entire life. The letter pokes fun at his fancy gift, but also references the bible and makes a comparison to Jacob's story. The letter is undated, however based on the stationary Milne used at the time it can determined to be circa 1926 - 1930. The letter in full:""Dear VincentHaving just lit my pipe with my watch, I take my pen in hand, and realize how much I owe to you (Annoying that my pen doesn't do any thing else. It might whistle or tell the north, you seem to have been rather careless about this)Really I'm terribly thrilled with my watch lighter ""('Yes', said the watch lighterman spitting thoughtfully -"" Jacobs story). Thank you so much. I'll never say anything against bankers again. They are the backbone of the country, the bulwark of the constitution. Having looked at my watch, I find that it is time to light my pipe again and return pen to gold sheath. Good-bye. God be with you (and bankers generally, but less emphatically). Again I thank you. You are too kind. Yours ever A.A. Milne""The letter was written to Vincent Seligman, who was a German Jew whose family emigrated to London and the United States in the 19th century."

        All the Sad Young Men.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons,, 1926. Octavo. Original dark green cloth, gilt lettered spine, blind lettered front cover, fore edge untrimmed. With the dust jacket. Ownership signature to front free endpaper. An excellent copy, in the exceptional jacket with a few trivial nicks to extremities. First edition, first printing. A very attractive copy in the first state of the dust jacket with the girl's lips entire (later states show the inking of the lips deteriorating) and the type intact on pages 38 and 248. All the Sad Young Men "was Fitzgerald's strongest collection, with four major stories ("The Rich Boy," "Winter Dreams," "Absolution," and "The Sensible Thing") as well as five commercial stories ? As was his custom, Fitzgerald polished the magazine texts of these stories. He was convinced that the book publication of stories affected his reputation, whereas the magazine appearances were ignored by the critics" (Bruccoli, Some Sort of Epic Grandeur, 272). In a long letter to his editor Maxwell Perkins, Fitzgerald instructed him to have the jacket "show transition from his early exuberant stories of youth which created a new type of American girl and the later and more serious mood which produced The Great Gatsby and marked him as one of the half-dozen masters of English prose mow writing in America ? What other writer has shown such unexpected developments, such versatility, changes of pace,' etc., etc., etc. I think that, toned down as you see fit, is the general line" (Turnbull, The Letters of F. Scott Fitzgerald, 189-90).

        David

1926 - LAWRENCE, D.H. David. A Play. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1926. Octavo, original paper covered boards. $1500.First American edition, presentation association copy inscribed on the half title by D.H. Lawrence to his "closest friends": "Earl + Achsah from D.H. Lawrence."Lawrence first met Earl Brewster and his wife Achsah Brewster in 1921 in Capri. The couple, American artists who shared Lawrence's love of travel, were his "closest friends in the 1920s" (Meyers, 251). The couple had a great influence on Lawrence's literary works, with Lawrence claiming that Earl had given him the idea for his last novel, The Escaped Cock. Achsah was one of only 10 people to attend Lawrence's funeral, and "the Brewsters were among the very few of Lawrence's friends who never turned on him or against whom he never felt anger or disappointment" (Roberts in Meyers, 134). The Brewsters published a memoir of the author in 1934, entitled D. H. Lawrence: Reminiscences and Correspondence. Lawrence signed this book four months before his death. This is the first American edition, published only months after the first English edition. Roberts A34. Text clean and fine, original boards bright. Expert restoration to original spine. A very good copy with a wonderful association. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

A.A. Milne references the bible, comparing bankers to Jacob's story

TORRENTS OF SPRING: A Romantic Novel in Honor of the Passing of a Great Race

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1926. First edition. 8vo, original black cloth lettered in red on the spine and upper cover. 143 pp. A very good, well preserved copy of Hemingway's first novel, generally clean and solid, hinges firm with no splitting, the cloth with some light evidence of age, a pleasing copy FIRST EDITION OF THE AUTHOR'S FIRST LONG WORK TO BE PUBLISHED. Although it was written after THE SUN ALSO RISES --"to cool out," Hemingway explained-- THE TORRENTS OF SPRING was published prior to his more famous novel. It was written as a parody of Sherwood Anderson's Dark Laughter. "It seems to have started as a knockabout parody of Sherwood Anderson's mechanized folkware" (quoted in THE HEMINGWAY READER). Written in ten days, it is a satirical treatment of pretentious writers. Hemingway received a mixed reaction to the novella that was sharply critical of other authors. His wife Hadley believed the characterization of Anderson was "nasty", while F. Scott Fitzgerald considered the novella to be a masterpiece.

        ALL THE SAD YOUNG MEN

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1926. First Edition; First Printing. Hard Cover. Good dust jacket. Octavo. Blue/green cloth as issued with title stamped in blind on the front cover and in gold on the spine; a very bright copy in Very Good condition or better; light rubbing at the corners and spine ends; top corner of the back board is mildly bumped; the stamping on the spine remains bright; Scribner's seal on the copyright page; type on pages 38, 248 and page number 90 remains strong and unbattered; a few leaves have creases from having the corners turned down; vertical crease running the length of the front free endpaper; a few leaves at the beginning have been roughly opened; otherwise a clean bright copy in uncommon dust jacket; dust jacket is separated at the rear joint as well as at the bottom of the spine; all pieces are held in place in a mylar cover though there is evidence of a few pieces of tape on the verso; piece missing at the top of the spine affecting the title (a facsimile has been laid in to give the book a better shelf presence); flap folds have some closed tears; the lips on the front panel illustration are battered indicating it came a bit later in the run. A nice copy in scarce dust jacket of Fitzgerald's third collection of short stories. While Fitzgerald is most remembered for his novels, in particular The Great Gatsby, he made his living by his stories which were published in the popular magazines of the day -- Saturday Evening Post, The Smart Set, American Mercury, and others. Scholars have argued that Fitzgerald used the short stories to work out themes in service of the novels that followed. While his short stories were typically far more popular than his novels, it was in his longer fiction that Fitzgerald felt he was practicing his art. All the Sad Young Men is the collection that followed The Great Gatsby which at its publication was a critical and commercial failure but is now thought to be Fitzgerald's most important work—indeed some have gone so far to call it the “great American novel.” All the Sad Young Men is a masterful collection including “Absolution,” often thought to be a false start to Gatsby as well as often anthologized “Winter Dreams.” Bruccoli A12.I.a.
