        The Land Of Mist.

New York, George H. Doran Company 1926. First US Edition. 8vo. Near fine in publisher's green cloth with titles in black to spine and front board. Some residue remains of a white paper label that appears to have been fixed to the lower edge of the front board, aprt from this residue and a slight bump to the upper right hand corner the book is exceptionally clean and lovely. Slight spotting to the page edges, the book is clad in a lovely example of the fragile dustwrapper, wear to extremities and chipping to the top right hand corner of the front panel and to the base of the spine, otherwise unfaded and bright, some slight toning to the green and cream rear panel and spine but the virtues far outweigh the shortcomings. Scarce in the wrapper and even scarcer in a wrapper that doesn't look like it heaved itself down the Amazon wracked with yellow fever and babbling about dinosaurs. The third story in the series featuring Professor George Challenger, one of the most memorable characters in speculative fiction. Doyle's other great character beside Sherlock Holmes, Challenger had already starred in two novels 'The Lost World' (1912), and 'The Poison Belt' (1913) and would later appear in 'When the World Screamed' and 'The Disintegration Machine'; Brilliant, witty, insufferable, and blessed with a booming voice and a huge black beard, Challenger is an eccentric and able champion of the human race. Given the author's preoccupation with Spritism at this time, 'The Land of Mist' turned out to be a psychic adventure. Green and Gibson; A Bibliography of Arthur Conan Doyle.

        Über das Unendliche.

First edition, offprint issue Berlin: Springer, 1925/1926. Very rare separate printing (WorldCat locates just two copies) of the most detailed exposition of Hilbert's proposal for the foundation of classical mathematics, which became known as Hilbert's Program. This paper further contains his attempted proof of the continuum hypothesis which led to the later work of Kurt Gödel and Paul Cohen. (Van Heijenoort: From Frege to Gödel, pp.367-92:) "Hilbert devoted to the foundations of mathematics a series of papers ... Among all these contributions the 1925 paper [the offered item] stands out as the most comprehensive presentation of Hilbert's ideas. It is the text of an address delivered in Münster on 4 June 1925 at a meeting organized by the Westphalian Mathematical Society to honor the memory of Weierstrass. In addition to the original version [ibid], two modified ones [were published in 1927 and 1930]. These, however, are abbreviated and besides other passages, omit entirely the section that deals with the continuum problem ... The paper consists of two quite distinct parts. The first is a clear and forceful presentation of Hilbert's ideas at the time on the foundations of mathematics. It starts by recalling how Weiserstrass eliminated references to 'infinity' in analysis (Hilbert could have mentioned Cauchy and D'Alembert) and reviews the role played by infinite in physics, set theory, and, when we deal with general propositions, logic. Leaning on the example of arithmetic, it introduces the distinction between finitary and ideal propositions, and it undertakes a simultaneous formalization of logic and arithmetic ... The second part of the paper is a sketch of an attempted proof of the continuum hypothesis. Stated for the first time by Cantor at the very beginning of the development of set theory (1878), presented by Hilbert as Problem no. 1 in his famous list of unsolved mathematical problems (1900), the continuum problem for years resisted the efforts of mathematicians. The only partial result known at the time of Hilbert's attempted proof was König's: the power of the continuum is not a limit of denumerably many smaller cardinal numbers ... Instead of the set of real numbers Hilbert considers the equivalent set of number-theoretic functions and undertakes to prove that there is a mapping of the set of ordinals of the second number class onto the set of these functions. By dealing with the definitions of functions rather than with the functions themselves the argument takes on a metamathematical aspect that is absent from Cantor's work. The fact that the values of a number-theoretic function may be made to depend on the solvability of a certain mathematical problem establishes a connection between the second part of the paper and the first, and Hilbert invokes his previously expressed conviction that every well-posed mathematical problem is solvable. If the definition of a function involves the solvability of a mathematical problem, it will contain an unbounded existential quantifier, or, in Hilbert's system, the ?-function. Convinced of the possibility of justifying the transfinite part of mathematics by metamathematical means, Hilbert states as Lemma I that such definitions of functions can be replaced by recursive definitions, in which, except for a string of prenex universal quantifiers, no quantifier occurs. ... Hilbert then proceeds to show that, since recursion equations defining functions contain 'variable-types' of increasing height, these equations parallel the definitions of the ordinals of the second number class. ... Among several unproved statements, it contains in particular, as Lemma II, the assertion that in the definitions of number-theoretic functions transfinite recursion can be replaced by ordinary recursion. Hilbert's attempt aroused few comments. Paul Lévy recalls: 'Zermelo told me in 1928 that even in Germany nobody understood what Hilbert meant'. ... The continuum hypothesis was proved by Gödel (1938, 1939, 1940) to be consistent with the customary axioms of set theory and by Cohen (1963-64) to be independent of these axioms. ... In his review of Gödel's second paper of the consistency of the continuum (1939), Bernays wrote: 'The whole Gödel reasoning may also be considered as a way of modifying the Hilbert project for a proof of the Cantor continuum hypothesis, as described in [Über das Unendliche, 1925], so as to make it practical and at the same time generalizable to higher powers'.". See also Parkinson: Breakthroughs, p.199 and Bell: Men of Mathematics, p.63. 8vo: 226 x 157 mm. Offprint from: Mathematische Annalen, vol. 95, pp. [161] - 190. Bound with a light green backstrip as issued, a fine copy. Besides the two copies located by WorldCat in Germany and Holland, we could locate three other offprints; one in the Paul Hertz collection of the University of Pittsburgh, and two copies in a private collection.

[Original art posters]: Crouse-Irving Flower Guild Easter Formal

[Syracuse, New York]. 1926. Two posters featuring original art. Measuring 19.5" x 30" and 20" x 29". Both are pen and ink with watercolor on stiff board. While unexamined out of the frames they appear near fine with some light toning and a few scattered smudges; one poster with six tack holes at the perimeter from when it was originally displayed. The posters promote the 1926 Easter Formal hosted by the Flower Guild of the Crouse Irving Hospital and Nursing School held on April 10th at the Onondaga Ballroom. Each poster features Jazz Age flappers with bobbed haircuts in shoulder-baring dresses, one playfully pulling up her dress to reveal her slip and bare knees(!), and the other dancing in the spotlight in front of a large Art Deco window to, we assume, Jimmy Day's Nighthawks, the local Syracuse jazz band listed on the posters. Both are signed in the lower right corners by the individual artists. A charming pair of unique Jazz Age posters displaying the popular iconography of the Twenties Flapper. .

The Racial Characters of the Swedish Nation. Anthropologia Suecica MCMXXVI. With the Collaboration of the Staff of the Institute and other Scientists.

The Swedish State Institute for Race Biology 1926 - FIRST EDITION, various tables, charts, maps and other illustrations throughout including plate showing conference group photo with printed key to tissue-guard, 4 colour-printed full-page maps, section of 44 plates showing the various types at rear, pp. xiv, 182, 108 (Supplement) + Plates, folio, original green cloth, lettered in brown to upper board with Institute crest in same, backstrip lettered in gilt against a dark green ground, a little minor soiling with top corner of upper board slightly knocked, red sprinkling to edges, creasing to free endpapers with front endpapers showing the shadow of a folder sometime laid in, very good. The first large work of the Institute, founded at the beginning of the decade by Herman Lundborg who conducted this survey, and a fascinating document of a time when eugenic programmes were a state concern among European nations. The study looks to record, describe and classify according to physical characteristics (size and colouring), migration and settlement - with its underlying intention being to promote and propagate the Nordic type. Whilst ideas of eugenics and race biology gained momentum in the wake of the First World War, their implication in Nazi ideology leading up to and during the Second World War led to what Kildal and Kuhnle refer to as their 'total separation' from 'social democratic welfare politics' ('Normative Foundations of the Welfare State: The Nordic Experience') - Lundborg himself was removed as Head of the Institute (and replaced by Gunnar Dahlberg) because of his anti-Semitic beliefs and Germanophile tendencies. An important book, richly illustrated and the text entirely in English (the title-page refers to its distribution in Jena, London, Paris, and New York, as well as for the domestic market) - it is scarce on the market, and unusual to find copies outside libraries and free of library markings, such as this one.

Zur Quantenmechanik II" in Zeitschrift für Physik 35, 1926, pp. 557-615

Vieweg und Springer, Berlin 1926 - FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF BORN, HEISENBERG, & JORDAN'S "MONUMENTAL" THREE-MAN PAPER, 'ON QUANTUM MECHANICS II', THE FIRST COMPLETE STATEMENT OF MATRIX MECHANICS (Peacock, Quantum Revolution, 52). In this work, Born, Heisenberg, and Jordan extend the methods Heisenberg presented in his initial 1925 paper and apply them to a number of important problems. "This paper definitively set forth [and first named] matrix mechanics - the version of quantum mechanics based on the algebraic manipulation of matrices that represent observable quantities such as position, momentum, and energy. Detailed calculations showed that the new matrix mechanics was very successful in predicting the anomalous Zeeman Effect, other forms of line splitting, and line intensities. The three authors even produced a new derivation of Planck's Law" (ibid). In the early 1920s there were fundamental difficulties in atomic physics. The quantum theory of atomic structure, founded by Bohr and largely developed by Bohr and Sommerfeld, did not describe the properties of complicated atoms and molecules. "In spite of its high-sounding name and its successful solutions of numerous problems in atomic physics, 'quantum theory', and especially the 'quantum theory' of polyelectronic systems, prior to 1925, was, from the methodological point of view, a lamentable hodgepodge of hypotheses, principles, theorems, and computational recipes rather than a logical consistent theory. Every single quantum-theoretic problem had to be solved first in terms of classical physics; its classical solution had then to pass through the mysterious sieve of the quantum conditions or, as it happened in the majority of cases, the classical solution had to be translated into the language of quanta in conformance with the correspondence principle? In short, quantum theory still lacked two essential characteristics of a full-fledged scientific theory, conceptual autonomy and logical consistency" (Jammer, The Conceptual Development, 196). The work of Heisenberg, Born, and Jordan rectified these issues and marked the "starting point for the new quantum mechanics," also called matrix mechanics (DSB). Heisenberg published his initial paper formulating his new quantum theory in 1925, but without reference to matrices. "Later the same year, Max Born and Pascual Jordan published a second paper that introduced the matrix formulation for the special case of one degree of freedom" (History of Physics: The Wenner Collection). Finally, in early 1926, all three scientists collaborated on a third paper, this 'three-man paper', and extended the theory to an arbitrary number of degrees of freedom. In its final form, they argued, Heisenberg's formulation of the new quantum theory is a matrix algebra of quantum operators that "predicts the radiation resulting from electron state transitions between energy shells in the atom without reference to how the transitions occur" (ibid). CONDITION & DETAILS: Berlin: Vieweg und Springer. Large 8vo. (9 x 6 inches; 225 x 150mm). pp. 557-722. Complete issue, rebacked at the spine and housed in a handsome leather clamshell case gilt-lettered at the spine and on the front board.         New World Vistas

Signed with confidence by Sir Stanley Spencer (1891-1951). his rare autograph and address in pencil, to whom the book is dedicated by his good friend the artist, James Wood in 1926. Signed Stanley Spencer, Chapel View, Burghclere, Newbury, Berks. This is where he lived in the period after he painted his greatest painting The Resurrection presented to the Tate. This is where he began his gigantic work at the newly built Sandham Memorial Chapel in 1927 in Burghclere. One can imagine Spencer reading this book in periods when he was not engaged in painting. I have enjoyed this wonderful book, but now must let it go to a good home.James Wood (1889-1975) was a painter, writer and aesthete and friend of Spencer. It is thought that `Jas` Wood is one of the figures in The Resurrection. This book has 3 pictures of Jackie Coogan and is an autographical work about Wood`s visit to America. New World Vistas is in itself a rare book but this copy has personal connections and the autograph and written address of Stanley Spencer. It is Spencer`s personal copy, produced at an important period of Spencer`s career. The book is 19 cms x 13.5 cms and weighs 480 grams. There are 317 pages. It has slightly cracked between the title page and the front photo, but is not loose. There is a crack between the end board and the last page, but it is not loose. The photo opposite p 247 is becoming loose. There are some small marks on front and back covers. There is no dust jacket. On the whole it is a firm copy of a very rare book with an even more rare connection to the artist who is regarded as probably one of the greatest in British 20th century art. It is a must for collectors of the works of Stanley Spencer and British 20th century art. There is no other book on sale on the internet of this title by this author.Autographs of Spencer alone fetch around £300.

The book has been Inscribed and Signed By the Author to the front blank endpaper: For my good friend, Douglas Sealy, with love from Hugh M'Diarmid, Dec. 67'. The recipient Douglas Sealy was a literary critic, teacher and a renowned translator of Irish poetry. Hugh MacDiarmid (C.M. Grieve) was Scotland's most influential and controversial writer in the 20th century. He urged and enabled the regeneration of all aspects of Scotland's literature and culture through his poetry, polemical writing and political activity. 'A Drunk Man Looks at the Thistle' (1926) is generally regarded as Scotland's masterpiece of Modernism. 'He started writing in Scots, using words and phrases he knew from boyhood and acquired from reading in dictionaries and works of Scottish literature from earlier eras. The poems of Sangschaw (1925), Penny Wheep (1926) and A Drunk Man Looks At The Thistle (1926) were shocking, adult, wry, rebarbative, difficult, piercingly sweet, unsentimental and brutal. They established a new dispensation for Scottish literature, and modernist lusts: for the body and the sexually explicit cognate with Joyce and Lawrence; for the local and demotic, cognate with William Carlos Williams; for the difficult, cognate with Eliot; for the vatic and austere, cognate with Yeats and Pound; for the intellectually demanding, cognate with Stevens and Valéry; but uniquely in the Scottish context, reclaiming a literary history that had fallen into neglect and obfuscation. Forget about Burns, he advised, go back to Dunbar and Henryson, recover and reclaim a national tradition that goes back through millennia.' (Scottish Poetry Library). A wonderful signed association copy of the author's key poetry collection and scarce with such attributes. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.

An excellent copy with bright contents. First edition, first impression. After the huge success of When We Were Very Young, first published on 6 November 1924, Milne was asked to contribute a story to the London Evening News. "The Wrong Sort of Bees", published on Christmas Eve 1925, was based on a bedtime story that Milne had told his son Christopher. It starred Christopher's stuffed bear, who had made his first public appearance in the poem "Teddy Bear", published in Punch in 1924 and later in When We Were Very Young. The original toy was a top-of-the-range Alpha Farnell bought at Harrods for Christopher Milne's first birthday, known initially as Edward or Edward Bear, then later rechristened Winnie-the-Pooh (after a favourite bear cub at London zoo). Winnie-the-Pooh was an immediate success and garnered even more enthusiastic reviews than its predecessor, with one critic writing that "When the real Christopher Robin is a little old man, children will find him waiting for them. It is the child's book of the season that seems certain to stay" (Thwaite p. 317). The book was first published in London on 14 October 1926 in an edition of 30,000 regular trade copies.
