Ehrenburg, Il'ia (Erenburg, 1891-1967)
Moscow (Riazan'): Izdatel'stvo "Puchina, 1925. Octavo (18 × 13 cm). Original pictorial wrappers (not attributed); 140, [3] pp. Very light wear to spine extremities; old bookstore stamps to rear wrapper; else very good. First Soviet edition, rare, of this book of short stories by Il'ia Ehrenburg (1891-1967), the Russian and Soviet writer of Jewish descent. The stories were written in Berlin in 1922, where Ehrenburg lived from 1921-1924. The theme of the Russian Revolution runs through all six stories. The first edition, printed in 1922 by a German publisher in Berlin was illustrated with six plates and cover design by El Lissitzky, with whom Ehrenburg co-edited the avant-garde journal Veshch' (Object) in Berlin. The Moscow version of the stories, intended for distribution in the Soviet Union, was banned due to the ambivalent view of the Revolution as presented in the stories. This 1925 edition was finally printed in the Soviet Union, in provincial Riazan', by tricking the censorship through changing the order of the stories and putting the title of the first story on the front wrapper, as though presenting a new work. The ruse was eventually discovered and the printed copies were confiscated soon after printing. Ehrenburg enjoyed a long literary career and had a complicated relationship with the Russian and later the Soviet State. A supporter of the 1905 Revolution, he was arrested in 1908 and forced to emigrate, settling in Paris, where he met Lenin and took part in émigré revolutionary activities. Eventually, Ehrenburg left the party and focused his attentions on artis … [Click Below for Full Description]

Among participants were painters, graphic artists, sculptors, theatre set and costume designers, applied arts designers. In catalogues works are divided into sections and sorted by artists' names. Each work is titled and for some a technique or material is captioned. All artists' names in alphabetical order. Information on artists differs from only a name and city to a short biography. Small but special section dedicated to works of students. In the second catalogue instead of applied arts section is titled folk art with items provided by Belarusian National Museum Overall there were more than 1000 works at the first and more than 500 works at the second art exhi … [Click Below for Full Description]

F. Scott Fitzgerald
1925. Facsimile. "His heart beat faster and faster as Daisy's white face came up to his own. He knew that when he kissed this girl, and forever wed his unutterable visions to her perishable breath, his mind would never romp again like the mind of God. So he waited, listening for a moment longer to the tuning fork that had been struck upon a star. Then he kissed her. At his lips' touch she blossomed like a flower and the incarnation was complete." Here we offer a limited edition facsimile of the only extant set of unrevised galley sheets of the novel F. Scott Fitzgerald tore apart to create his classic American novel, perhaps the greatest novel ever, The Great Gatsby. In this galley stage of the publishing process, the novel is entitled Trimalchio. This is a very high quality edition, limited to 500 copies published by the University of South Carolina Press in 2000 and featuring notes by the preeminent Fitzgerald expert Matthew J. Bruccoli. This copy is numbered 183 of 500. Shortly before his death, Mr. Bruccoli personally inscribed the top sheet to a friend (please see pic). Gatsby's immense import was not felt until the Army distributed copies of the book to soldiers in WWII, just after Fitzgerald's death. In 1940, as hundreds of cases of the unsold second edition of Gatsby languish in Scribners' warehouse, Fitzgerald, fearing his physical decline, writes Max Perkins, referring to Scottie Fitzgerald, his teenaged daughter: "I wish I was in print. It will be odd a year or so from now when Scottie assures her friends I was an author and finds that no book is procurable... Pr … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ankersen. 51 original photographs, each approx. 88 x 115mm., all inkstamped to verso with the expedition name and the separate inkstamp of Dr. W. The expedition travelled back from Spitsbergen aboard S.M.S. Zieten, then under the command of Alfred Ritscher. On his return, Grotewahl wrote a single paper with results from the expedition, and drew critisicm for squandering resources. However, his experiences in planning and running the expedition led him to look into the possibility of establishing a research base that would support future polar expeditions. This led to his foundation in July 1926 of the Archiv für Polarforschung at Kiel (today the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Polarforschung). The present collection of photographs is the work of the the expedition photographer … [Click Below for Full Description]

Roth, Samuel, ed
New York: Two Worlds Publishing. First Edition. Softcover. Good. Published in New York "at the sign of the Mocki-Grisball" by Two Worlds Publishing, the first five whole numbers of the justly celebrated, understandably influential literary journal, devoted to "the Increase of the Gaiety of Nations." This lot of five items comprise the first four whole numbers (published in 1925), and the fifth, being Volume Two, Number Five, in 1926. Extremely scarce in the trade in this condition and state. __Two Worlds__ was credited (negatively) for publishing--without his consent---James Joyce's monumental __Finnegans Wake__. Sturdy, still tightly bound softcover copies, four being housed in well worn and cracked cardboard slip-cases (but that have served their purposes well), the fifth, being in quarto size, standing on its own and being in Very Good, bordering on Near Fine condition. Neither underlining nor highlighting anywhere; perfectly readable, usable copies, and with slight cracking to or scuffing of the spines at head and tail, crimping to tips here and there, else remarkably bright and clean of interior. __Two Worlds__, edited by Samuel Roth, but with editorial and other contributions by the likes of Ezra Pound, Arthur Symons and Ford Madox Hueffer, among others, had a precise knack for publishing, on the one hand, poetry, prose and essays and criticism from established writers and up-and-comers, and also edgier, sometimes (then considered to be) pornographic material and that which had been published previously. Okay, they pirated some materials, but U.S. copyright laws did … [Click Below for Full Description]

Keeler, O.B
Greenberg, Publishing, Inc, New York, 1925. First edition of O.B. Keeler's autobiography. Octavo, original cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "Dear Mr LeVino - In this queer game we all life, may the worst breaks you ever get be all the best of it - Your Friend, O.B. Keeler, 1941." In near fine condition. Rare and desirable signed and inscribed. D&M 23000; D&J K3040. O.B. Keeler first began playing golf as a boy during summers in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Despite his love of the game, he was never better than an average player and never once in his life broke 90. But he sure could write about it. Keeler traveled with Bobby Jones over 150,000 miles in 16 years. Bobby's immortality was not placed upon him solely by his splendid swing. His name is possibly the most famous in the sport not in small part due to Pop Keeler. It was Pop who wrote about the miraculous victories and gut-wrenching shots with a Shakespearean dramatic flair and wit of an old-world newspaperman. H.G. Salsinger of the Detroit News said it best. "While Jones composed his epics, Keeler sang them to the world, and they seemed all the finer for the manner of singing." He got his name etched amongst the greatest sports writers of all time and possibly the greatest of all golf journalists. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
