A A Milne
London: Methuen & Co, 1926. This is a very rare, collectable 1st edition, 1st printing of WINNIE THE POOH - one of the classics of children's literature. Printed by Methuen & Co. in Great Britian, and published in 1926, it is a TRUE 1ST EDITION, 1ST PRINTING, with only the one date "First Published in 1926" appearing in the book. There were 5,500 first editions, first printings of this book, with about 3,500 still in existence and this is one of them! The book is in excellent condition (especially considering it is nearly 100 years old). I've not seen many examples of this rare book in better condition. I hope I look as good when I'm a centenarian!!! All pages are present and the maps in the front & back look great. The spine is fully intact and tight and all the letters on the spine are clearly visible. The gold gilt at the top of the pages is still evident. There is no handwriting or inscriptions anywhere in the book. The illustrations are all clean and untouched/not coloured-in. An exceptional authentic copy of A A Milne's iconic children's title with wonderful Ernest Shepard drawings inside. Very fine 1st edition, 1st printing copies of Winnie the Pooh like this one generally sell for £750+, but I've listed this book for sale for £650. No offers please, as I know this 1st, 1st of WTP in excellent condition is definitely worth it. This book is will increase in value in the run-up to the 100th anniversary of Winnie-the-Pooh in Nov. 2026. **This book would be a wonderful gift for someone special and it is a real collectors' item for the high-end collector/retailer of rare … [Click Below for Full Description]

Inspiration for Bob Kane Batman and Detective Comics! Possible first Batman appearance or Batman back story! "The Bat is a three-act play by Mary Roberts Rinehart and Avery Hopwood that was first produced by Lincoln Wagenhals and Collin Kemper in 1920. The story combines elements of mystery and comedy as Cornelia Van Gorder and guests at her rented summer home spend a stormy night searching for stolen money they believe is hidden in the house, while they are stalked by a masked criminal known as "the Bat". The Bat's identity is revealed at the end of the final act." Quoted from Wikipedia Technically the first appearance of Batman before the comic books! A.A. Milne
Alan Alexander Milne (1926) 'Winnie-the-Pooh', UK first deluxe edition, first printing, published by Methuen. Signed by illustrator Ernest H. Shepard on the title page. In addition, a handwritten and signed letter by A.A. Milne anticipating the birth of Christoper Robin, the protagonist of the seminal Winnie-the-Pooh series. The condition of the book is absolutely fine, still in its original card board box and with the original glassine dust jacket. The print run was 3,000 copies divided into three colours of the leather binding: red, green, and blue. This is the red leather variant. One of 1,000 copies of which perhaps a handful exist in this beautiful condition and signed by the iconic illustrator Ernest Shepard! Condition of the book: a fine book with no issues whatsoever. Silk ribbon market present, all page block edges gilded. No rubbing to the leather biding. Spine like new with the gilding all vibrant and not rubbed out. The book has not been handled and has sat in its box for decades. The original box has usual signs of ageing, i.e. discolouration and a few ageing spots. The best example of this book we have encountered. The letter: Single page ALS, 4.5″ x 6″, on 11 Mallord Street, Chelsea letterhead. Dated "15.iv.20" and signed by A.A. Milne in full signature as "A.A. Milne". Center fold, else near fine. An incredible letter marking the first whisper of the catalyst for Milne's Winnie The Pooh series. Although Milne would not know it at the time, the birth of his son Christopher Robin in August of 1920 which would propel his imagination into the Hundred Acre Woods … [Click Below for Full Description]

Schlegel, H. [Herman]
D. Noothoven Van Goor, Leyden [Leiden]. Although there is no date on the title page, Zimmer (1926) indicates that this edition was published in 1859 following the original work issued in 45 parts from 1854-58. In addition the original text and plates, Schlegel added a foreword to this edition dated December 24, 1858. 699 pages and errata, plus 362 plates originally issued in two separate volumes, though now excised and housed in a slipcase. All 362 plates are hand-colored lithographs and have been collated to be complete. Text volume has been rebound in the late 20th century with cloth spine covers and faux marbled paper over boards. The original text on the spine of the text volume has been clipped and affixed to the spine over the new binding. The plates are housed in a slipcase, likely made at the same time the text was rebound. The brown cloth of the slipcase is covered with marbled paper from the original volumes and has the spine cover with gilt text affixed to its back cover. The text volume remains tight and clean. A few of the first leaves show small tears along bound edge. There is just a little light foxing and darkening of some leaves. The plate images all remain bright and crisp. The paper shows some darkening and light foxing. Penciled plate numbers are seen in upper corners of recto and verso of each plate. A few plates with male and female examples, are marked with a penciled symbol to the side indicating sex. There is a little penciled marginalia in the text volume and a few of the plates have penciled notations on verso. An older typed list of the plates w … [Click Below for Full Description]

Aseev, Nikolai
Kharkov: Izdatel'stvo "Proletarii", 1926. Octavo (16.3 × 14.6 cm). Original sewn pictorial wrappers by Aseev (?); 102, [1] pp. Light wear to spine and corners; overall about very good. First and only editon of these poems by Aseev, which includes three cycles, entitled "Romantsero," "Dni," and "Pesni." Although best known for his later socialist realist writing, Aseev was a noted Russian futurist poet, the founder of "Lirika" group and publishing enterprise (1913). After it disbanded, he joined the futurist group Tsentrifuga (The centrifuge), which jettisoned tradition in favor of innovation in style and subject. Aseev was close to, and his work inspired by, Sergei Bobrov, Boris Pasternak, Mayakovsky, and Khlebnikov.Aseev's self-drawn wrapper illustration strikingly uses typography to represent the contrast between marble and sound as a metaphor for poetry, here exemplified by red angular thunderbolts, which also allude to contemporary visual codes for electricity and the output of various sound media. The marble construction depicted on the front wrapper is, aside from the large orb, strikingly similar to the version of Lenin's Mausoleum built in 1930. Although one of the poems commemorates Lenin's death in 1924, Aseev could only have known the preliminary version built by Shchusev in 1925. The attribution of the wrapper design to Aseev is based on the RGALI finding aid for the archive of literary critic Viktor V. Gol'tsev, which appears to contain Aseev's original drawing. Not in Getty. Not in MoMA. Rare; as of April 2020, KVK, OCLC show two photocopies and other d … [Click Below for Full Description]

Milena, i.e. Milena Jesenská
Prague: F. Topi?, 1926. Octavo (19 × 12.7 cm). Original printed violet wrappers; 90, [3] pp. Wrappers lightly discolored and worn to lower right corner; else about very good. First and only edition of a volume of essays and newspaper editorials by Milena Jesenská, the journalist and translator best known for her intense, yet brief (and largely epistolary) romantic relationship with Kafka. Jesenská touches on questions about modern life, such as fashion and interior decorating, with a light style that occasionally resembles later "self help" writing. Curiously, she takes a somewhat conservative view of the "women's question" and female emancipation. Her book features a printed dedication to "my dear father" and was meant as a gesture of reconciliation with her estranged parents. The relationship was strained following Jesenská's liaison with the Bohemian Ernst Pollak: her father briefly committed her to a psychiatric clinic, after which Jesenská eloped to Vienna, where she also flirted with drugs and alcohol. It was during this unhappy marriage that she began to correspond with Kafka, who eventually broke off the contact, but entrusted her with his diaries in 1922. She later returned to Prague, where she married the Bauhaus architect Jaromír Krejcar and was close to the Czech avant-garde group Dev?tsil. The anthology was evidently the first volume of a projected series entitled "?ena" ("Woman"), which was to be edited by Milena but did not materialize. Jesenská later joined the Czech Resistance and died in the Ravensbrück concentration camp. KVK, OCLC only show the copies at … [Click Below for Full Description]

THOMASON, JR., USMC, CAPTAIN JOHN W.
Charles Scribner's Sons, 1926., New York. First edition. 8vo. Two-tone cloth and pic. boards, xxvi (2) -245 (1)p. "Songs Five" "Long Boy" follows p.246. (3). frontispiece (color) introduction, numerous illustrations by the author. John W. Thomason Jr. was an accomplished artist and author of several books; however his true lifelong profession was as a Marine Corps officer. He served during WWI in the 49th Company of the 1st Battalion, 5th Regiment. His first combat action came at Belleau Wood. This book, long celebrated as the single finest account of Americans in battle in World War I, is a vivid depiction of US soldiers' lives in and out of battle on the Western Front during the final months of 1918 before the Armistice. The impact of the novel is considerably augmented by the author's numerous sketches and drawings of the soldiers, done contemporaneously on and near the battlefields portrayed in the book. This is not a history book, but an exceptional account of WW1 soldiers at the front, simply and eloquently recounted without melodrama or sentimentality. An extraordinary copy, with original watercolor that appears on p.51 tipped into the front of the book, along with an original autographed letter, signed, from Thomason referring to the illustrations and the originals from which they have been adopted. A virtually new copy, with only the bookplate of Mitchell S. Buck, to whom all the correspondence was directed; otherwise crisp and without any wear. Protected in an elaborate, custom-made half morocco slipcase. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Gandhi, Mohandas K. [Mahatma]
1926. Rare autograph note collection in the hand of the Father of the Nation of India, Mahatma Gandhi, written at the height of the struggle for Indian Independence. The collection includes two autograph notes, two autograph letters, and three autograph postcards with Gandhi's "Blessings" inscribed at the conclusion of each. The postcards are postmarked May 27, June 26, and July 25 1926. In the wake of World War II, Gandhi opposed providing any help to the British war effort and campaigned against any Indian participation in the war. As the war progressed, Gandhi intensified his demand for independence, calling for the British to Quit India in a 1942 speech in Mumbai, hours after which he was arrested by the British government. Gandhi's imprisonment lasted two years, although he was initially sentenced to six. He was released in May of 1944 due to failing health. Following the end of WWII, the new British government passed the Indian Independence Act of 1947, partitioning the British Indian Empire was into two dominions, a Hindu-majority India and Muslim-majority Pakistan. In very good condition. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi led the 32-year struggle for Indian Independence against British rule employing the use nonviolent civil disobedience, inspiring movements of civil rights and freedom throughout the world. NICHOLSON, William
William Heinemann Ltd. London, 1926. Publisher's pictorial boards in dustwrapper, as issued. Wrapper rather worn and soiled with paper tape reinforcement to rear, vertical crease to the last two leaves otherwise no faults. Signed by Nicholson to the Cambridge bookseller Gustave David (1860-1936). Known to all, Gustave David was one of Cambridge's enduring personalities. In 1926 William Nicholson executed his well-known drawing of David sitting on a crate at his market stall near Great St. Mary's church. Robin Halwas wrote of him that: "David had a recognisable influence on the intellectual life of of the University and a legendary role in developing the libraries of several generations of Cambridge bibliophiles [-] Towards the end of David's career the University offered him in recognition of the 'conspicuous services he has rendered the cause of humane letters' either an honorary MA or a luncheon in the hall of Trinity College; he chose the latter." A detail of Nicholson's drawing of David was used as the frontis for the valedictory volume 'David of Cambridge. Some Appreciations.' which included contributions from T.R. Gerber, Karl (1912-1974).
1926. Bildgrösse: 100x75 cm. Unten links signiert und datiert. Ungerahmt. Quarter cream buckram with scarlet cloth covered boards with de-bossed bright gilt nautical device on front cover, bright gilt spine titling. All edges uncut. Title-page, full-page map, 4 head and tail-pieces (two hand-coloured). 17 full-page engravings of ships and barges; printed recto only, and all but one coloured by hand — all by Edward Wadsworth. Copper plates destroyed after 450 copies printed. An elegant and most impressive publication featuring a series of copper plates engraved in the line manner by Edward Wadsworth and coloured by hand. Introduction and brief descriptions by Bernard Windler. Number 187 of 450 copies set in Koch Kursiv type and printed at the Curwen Press (recto pages only) on Zanders hand-made paper. There is such a harmonious elegance between the typeface (Koch Kursiv) and the engravings that one must agree with Peter Tucker when he says "It was one of the most beautiful books to come from the Curwen Press in the 1920s, or indeed at any other time. " Wadsworth's only original book and completely successful. An especially fine copy clean unmarked very slight bumping at head and tail but with wear and aging to the original publisher's slipcase. A lovely publication complete and its original state. [Attributes: First Edition]

Aseev was close to, and his work inspired by, Sergei Bobrov, Boris Pasternak, Mayakovsky, and Khlebnikov. Aseev's self-drawn wrapper illustration strikingly uses typography to represent the contrast between marble and sound as a metaphor for poetry, here exemplified by red angular thunderbolts, which also allude to contemporary visual codes for electricity and the output of various sound media.
