MAVO] SAITÔ Hideo, author; OKADA Tatsuo, artist
1926. [MAVO] SAITÔ Hideo, author; OKADA Tatsuo, artist. AOZAMETA DÔTEIKYO. The title of this important work is usually translated as THE PALE-FACED VIRGIN'S MAD THOUGHTS. Published by Choryusha of Tokyo in 1926, it is illustrated throughout with black & white linocuts executed by Okada Tatsuo. 8vo, 4, 120pp. +4pp. There are 17 full-page prints and many other figures integrated into the text. With abstract designs in color by Okada illustrating the boards, front and rear. About fine. The covers and spine show only the slightest wear. Overall, a remarkably clean copy of this fragile production. No single one of Okada's illustrated works can be distinguished as being comparatively scarce, all five are almost unobtainable. Okada appeared on the avant-garde scene in Tokyo as suddenly and mysteriously as he left. He is believed to have arrived from Kyushu in the early 1920s and, after a run of considerable authority and influence in MAVO and avant-garde circles, disappeared into Manchuria in the middle 1930s. A very important item for any collection of Mavo-related material, it is Okada's most prolifically illustrated work. There is a poem, inscribed on the rfep With unread owner's (poet's?) seal. Near fine, as above. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Takehisa Yumeji
1926. Up for your consideration is an extremely rare copy of 'The Narrow Path Of An Alley' by Takehisa Yumeji. I believe this is the correct translation of the title, however I have also seen it translated as: 'Alone in the Street', 'Narrow Meadow Paths', 'Alley in the Street' and 'The Land of the Road'. Japanese Title is: 露地のほそみち Romaji: Roji no hosomichi Publisher: 春陽堂 (Shun'yodo Publishers) Date of publishing: Taishou 15/Showa 1, or 1926, November 24 - First Edition Author/Illustrator: 竹久夢二, Takehisa Yumeji The book is a collection of Takehisa Yumeji's poetry, with various monochrome sketches including women and spiders as well as 12 stunning full color woodcut prints of women. Hard cover book with image of willow branches and moon on outer boards, title on spine and internal boards have images of lanterns in twilight landscape. Comes with the original cassette slipcase with title on it across paper leaves and bamboo branches. Approx Dimensions: H 7.5" × W 5" Condition Slipcase: VG/VG+ For a book close to being 100 years old, that originated in Japan, it's in very good shape. Despite some signs of light wear/marking/rubbing/age-toning (see photos), looking at other copies of this book that I found online, I didn't find one in as good a shape as this. Book: VG+ To my eyes it looks to be in great condition, and barely ever read. A A Milne
London: Methuen & Co, 1926. This is a rare, collectable 1st edition, 1st printing of WINNIE THE POOH - one of the classics of children's literature - and this book is in great condition as it is nearly 100 years old. Printed by Methuen & Co. in Great Britian, and published in 1926, it is a true 1st edition, 1st printing, with only the one date "First Published in 1926" listed (as you can see in the photos). There were 5,500 first editions, first printings of this book, with only about 3,500 - 4,000 thought to still be in existence and this is one of them. All pages are present, and it is an entirely clean book! There are no owner inscriptions or handwriting anywhere in the book, and there is no foxing or spotting in the book (which is especially rare for such a collectable book of this age). The illustrated maps of "100 Aker Wood", front & back, look great. The golden guilt is visible on the pages at the top, and the guilted lettering and picture of Christopher Robin and Winnie the Pooh is very clear on the cover and spine. All in all, a nice authentic copy of A A Milne's iconic children's title, with the wonderful Ernest Shepard drawings inside. This book will increase in value in the run-up to the 100th anniversary of the publication of Winnie-the-Pooh **This book will make a wonderful, unique gift to someone special**. Luther, Martin (Translator); von Kraus, Carl, Professor (Editor); Simons, Anna (Initial Capitals)
[Munich]: Bremer Presse [1926-1928], 1926. Simons, Anna. Limited Edition. One of 365 copies, folio size, 5 volumes (complete), in German. An extraordinary publication by the Bremer Press of the "Martin Luther Bible". Translated by Luther directly from the Greek during his enforced sequestration in Wartburg Castle (1521-22), it was first published in 1545 and he continued to edit and refine his translation up to his death the following year. Translating directly from the Greek was a marked departure for the academics of the day, who relied on the Latin Vulgate translation and used Latin for their studies with Greek seldom used or even taught. Luther chose to translate from the Greek into the vernacular German language of the day, making the scriptures accessible to everyday people and, at the same time, providing a vehicle for a more unified German language. The Bremer Press, known for its interrelation of scholarship, type design, and book design, has provided a version of the Luther Bible edited by Professor Carl von Kraus (1868-1952), Professor of German Philology at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. (n. b., above info from Wiki and Ransom). ___DESCRIPTION: Set of five volumes, complete; Volume I: Die Bucher Mose; Volume II: Das Ander Teil des Alten Testaments; Volume III: Das Dritte Teil des Alten Testaments; Volume IV: Die Propheten; and Volume V: Das Neue Testament.
