Joseph H\'e9mard (1880-1961) was a prolific artist and cartoonist who illustrated many classics of French literature. He also designed textiles, book bindings, posters, and costumes and sets for operas. His 150 illustrations for \i Le Capitaine Fracasse were vividly coloured through stencils by Eugene Charpentier (perhaps a relative of the celebrated nineteenth century painter Eugene Louis Charpentier?).       New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1926. First Printing. 8vo: [8],143,[1]pp.Publisher's finely woven midnight-green cloth (appearing almost black)f, spine and upper cover lettered in scarlet, fore- and bottom edges untrimmed. Better than Near Fine (slight lean, fronrtend papers toned, several marginal stains to text) copy of Hemingway's first novel and second book to be published in America, one of only 1250 copies printed. Provenance: circular blindstamp of Ray McRae to front fly leaf, small bookseller's ticket of Brentano's, Paris, to lower paste down. Hanneman A4.A. The author's first novel, published by Scribner's after Boni and Liveright rejected it. In this slim volume, Hemingway parodied Sherwood Anderson's Dark Laughter (1925), and because Anderson was under contract with Boni and Liveright, that publisher chose not to publish the parody. According to the Literary Encyclopedia, The Torrents of Spring was on one level a declaration of literary independence (Anderson had served as something of a mentor to Hemingway), but many scholars also suspect Hemingway wrote the parody to escape from his three-book contract with Boni and Liveright. If that was the case, the plan worked, and Scribner's became Hemingway's publisher for the rest of his life. Still, some reviewers saw the book as a detour in Hemingway's own career, because Torrents of Spring had little in common with the excellent short stories he had published in his first U.S. book, In Our Time.          Three Photograph Albums, Containing 400 Australia Photographs with Rare Views of Palm Island, Penal Settlement.

      New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, 1926-29, 1926. Set of three photograph albums, circa 1926-1929, taken and compiled by an English couple who were evidently residents of Australia for at least three years, and possibly connected to the livestock raising industry. Contains 427 gelatin silver print photographs, both snapshot images and professional works, mounted onto cardstock leaves, most with either manuscript captions or embedded typescript captions. Photographs vary in size, the smallest measuring approximately 8 x 6 cm, and the largest 12 x 7 cm. Three oblong 8vo. string-tied brown paper board albums, the first measuring approximately 31 x 25 cm, the other two measuring approximately 29 x 21 cm. Some creasing to boards, age-toning to a scant few images, otherwise in Very Good Condition, pleasing and nostalgic. Captions reveal that the travellers are from the Saunders family. Images of "F.B. Saunders" or "F.B.S." have been removed, though further research may lead to his profession or contribution whilst in Australia, possibly as a pastoralist or grazier. It would be most interesting if a connection could be made to London-born Henry John Saunders (1855-1919) who emigrated to Australia as a civil engineer and mining agent, and who rose to be senator of Western Australia in 1903. Largely centered in New South Wales, this abundant set of photographs captures a nation in transformation, with images of old town streets and colonial buildings, abandoned gold mines, and family-operated cattle or sheep stations, as well as new developments in communications, trade and technology. Rare firsthand views of the Palm Island Penal settlement illustrate the regretful continued oppression of the Aboriginal community. The first album, largest in dimension and containing 73 photographs, begins with the departure for an adventure and extended residence in Australia. Here the travellers include photographs of Cape Town, then Melbourne, Sydney, Townsville in Queensland, St. Kilda (city in Victoria, Australia), Griffith, Lismore, and Gloucester in New South Wales. The second album is centered in New South Wales, with views providing a glimpse into several towns with at least one main-street view illustrating a quieter era of family shops and dirt roads. Some places represented are Tanworth, Kyogle, Barraba, the Cessnock Mining District, Kurri Kurri, Newcastle, Sydney, Canberra, an irrigation area near Yenda, the Hunter River region, the Quirindi Plains, Coonamble, Griffith, Murrumburra, and even more. The photographer/traveller identifies numerous stations and station homesteads, suggesting that he [Saunders] was knowledgeable about the trade in the region, and may have been involved in ranching himself. The third album contains 200 photographs and spans the same time period as the last, with dated captions ranging from 23 September 1928 to 5 December 1929. A highlight in this album is a tour of Palm Island which at the time was a penal settlement. A group of convicts are photographed as they are transported to the island. We also find a lovely panorama of Bathurst, and an early photograph of the old courthouse in Bourke which retains its unique purpose today [The Bourke court house is unique for inland Australia as it was originally a maritime court, and to this day maintains that distinction.] New bridges, irrigation, rail lines, coal and gold mining, urban construction - these views illustrate a rapidly developing society. At Tumut we see the original equestrian race course, at Proserpine a sugar mill, at Grafton a timber mill, and at Sydney the Harbour Bridge being constructed.. Photo.

With light rubbing to the joints and small chips to the head and tail. A few handling marks to both wrappers, internally and externally. Externally, both volumes are smart with minor bumping to the extremities and to the head and tail of spine. Internally, both volumes are firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to edges with light spots to the foredge. Occasional light spots. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED with VERY GOOD INDEEDdustwrappers..

      London Andrew Melrose 1926 - 8vo. 268pp. Near fine in publisher's burgundy cloth titled in gilt to spine and blind to front board, in a very good example of the elusive dustwrapper, with some chipping to spine ends, not affecting text and some chipping and soiling to rear panel. Internally clean, minor foxing to prelims. A bizarre and unusual supernatural story set during the English Civil War, shades of "The Hole of The Pit." Berridge was an Anglican clergyman in the remote fastnesses of rural Essex (I'm not sure they have ever been described as such, but I have been there, and they should), his novels, in common with many clergyman authors, (that's a list that needs building) are primarily involved with the locality in which they live and work. Blind men creeping through graveyards, secret cults, disturbing rituals and a rural England thrown into utter chaos by the horrors of war. Early three-quarter polished red calf leather with five raised bands, lettered in gilt in three compartments and with gilt decorations in the other compartments, over red marbled boards with tan ribbed endpapers, 4to. Archivos do Museu Nacional do Rio de Janeiro, volume 27. According to Adler, History of Herpetology, this is Ribeiro's "most monumental herpetological work" (pg. 88). Ribeiro monographed the known Brazilian species of frogs and discovered many new species. The text is in Portuguese with Latin names used throughout. From the library of Brazilian herpetologist Miguel Trefaut Rodrigues with his custom book plate on the front endpaper. Rare work seldom offered - we last sold a copy 17 years ago. Some foxing to the outer margins of the plates, the text and the fine leather binding are bright and clean; a tight copy in near fine condition.

In con- junction with the Daihei print shop, he made bird and flower designs for color prints under the name Kosaon.       Two World Publishing Company 1926-1927, New York - Eleven octavo issues (24cm); printed wrappers; variously paged, with publication sequence as follows: Vol.1, Nos.1-4; Vol.2, Nos.1-4; Vol.3, Nos.1-3. All issues showing light overall wear, toning, and dustiness to wrappers, with occasional small nicks and tears to spine ends; wrappers on Vol.2, No.3, and Vol.3, No.1 re-glued at an early date; five issues with trace of soil/damping to upper or lower edges, extending into affected margins no more than 1/2 cm.; Vol.2, No.4 and Vol.3, No.3 with a few splits and tears to joints and spine-fold; chiefly clean internally; Very Good to Very Good+ overall. After finally getting Ulysses published in Paris, Joyce had encountered many problems before his novel finally saw publication by Random House in 1934. Between March 1918 and December 1920, The Little Review attempted to publish Ulysses serially; 23 installments appeared before publication was halted by actions brought by the Society for the Suppression of Vice. All issues were subsequently banned by the U.S. Post Office. As a result of the ban, and in an attempt to capitalize on public interest, publisher and writer Samuel Roth published Ulysses in bowdlerized form 14 episodes in 12 installments of Two Worlds Monthly. Vol.3, No.4 was never issued separately, and is found only in the later issued two volume set bound by the publisher. These reprints were unauthorized by Joyce, and the serialization "resulted in considerable public indignation and provoked the "International Protest" signed by 167 artists and writers and printed in Transition.Joyce's American legal representatives obtained an injunction against Samuel Roth and Two Worlds Publishing Company on December 27, 1928, over a year after Two Worlds Monthly had ceased publication (Slocum & Cahoon, p.100). Extremely rare manual on the cultivation of roses in North Africa by Alfred Pile, a teacher of horticulture at the Colonial School of Agriculture in Tunis, Tunesia. The book deals with the history of the rose in northern Africa, different species of roses, how to cultivate, prune, graft and fertilize them, and how to start a rose garden. Included at the end is a list of different rose species, arranged by colour. Pile's work is followed by a brief treatise on the enemies of roses by Théophile Pagliano, "Professeur de parasitologie" at the same school. Besides the advertisement on the inside of the wrappers, this copy contains 4 additional leaves of advertisement. Some advertise for books on roses and botany, published in Alger or Tunis, others for businesses in Tunis, including an electrician, the photographer, and Galeries Lafayette. With a stamp on the title-page. Somewhat browned, with some annotations and underscoring in pen and pencil, and with a tear in one of the folding plates.

First Printing, one of only 2500 copies, of the author's first novel. 8vo: 319,[1]pp. Publisher's navy blue cloth, spine and upper cover stamped in yellow, fore-edge untrimmed, stylized blue and white vine-patterned end papers, title page in red and black. A beautiful, crisp, fresh copy, hinges sound and uncracked, pages clean, bright and unmarked, excepting manuscript ex-libris to half-title and verso of front fly leaf, and these trivial faults: one dog-ear, one leaf edge vertically creased, thin one-inch streak to upper cover, otherwise spotless. Without the scarce dust jacket. Petersen A2.1. ¶ In 1925, Faulkner moved to New Orleans where he joined a literary circle centered on Sherwood Anderson and was introduced to the modernist innovations of T. S. Eliot and James Joyce. His interest in experimental writing was piqued, and he began a novel, his first, Soldiers' Pay, portraying the tragic homecoming of a wounded war hero. Though set in Georgia, it was, nonetheless, a kind of rehearsal for the later Mississippi novels, full of despair and "mythic motifs of impotence and futile love." A stunning early illustrated aviation magazine in Ottoman script. This is a 14th number of an aviation magazine, written in Ottoman script and published in 1926, with a highly decorative cover illustration. The history of Ottoman military aviation, also called Ottoman Air Force, dates to 1909 or 1911. By the end of 1916 the fleet size reached its apex with 90 airplanes. With the signing of the Armistice of Mudros on 30 October 1918, the Ottoman military aviation effectively came to an end. The Turkish Aeroplane Society was published on 16 February 1926, in the year of the publisction of this magazine.

Avec la reconnaissance de Rene Clair," which translates roughly as "To Mr. Brun who so cordially welcomed my debut. With appreciation, Rene Clair." A nicely inscribed, and highly limited issue of the first novel by the famous French film director probably best known in the English-speaking world for his 1945 film of Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None. Cloth a little sunned, marked and scuffed, with slight wear to the extremities; edges lightly marked; a very good copy. With the contemporary ownership details of 'I.F. Phipps, Cornell University ... April 1926', and the later name-stamp of G.M.E. Mayo, University of Adelaide. While still a student at the University of Adelaide, Phipps had been appointed to head the plant breeding section at the Waite Institute; he was 'sent to the US to train under Cornell geneticists R.A. Emerson, Barbara McClintock, and George Beadle from 1925 to 1928' (David Steffes: 'The "Eco-Worldview" of Charles Birch', 2008). Some lightly pencilled marginal notes (confined mainly to the 'General Conclusions' chapter) appear to be by Phipps. The author, famous for his experimental research with the fruit fly and establishment of the chromosome theory of heredity, won the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1933.

Including simple settings of Christmas Carols in Latin, there were ninety-five numbered copies produced in a brown cloth binding; this example is not numbered and must have been an unwanted copy that was never bound.
