      Paris Du Chartre et van Buggenhoudt 1924 - Set of four lithographs hand coloured en pochoir. Superb lithographs by the master of the format. "In comparison with their variety and brilliance, much Art Deco illustration seems pallid and constrained. And of course their large format makes them particularly attractive for exhibition purposes" (Ray, The Art Deco Book in France). E.A. Seguy (1889-1985), was active as an artist in Paris from 1900 to 1925. His mastery of decorative design and colour is evident in the series of 11 beautiful pochoir portfolios he created. Unusual in his capacity to span the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods, Seguy's portfolio's remain exquisite examples of ornamentation and composition, featuring motifs based on the natural world, including flowers, foliage, crystals and animals.

Judaica) The French novelists and essayists Jérôme (1874-1953) and Jean (1877-1952) Tharaud wrote both fiction and non-fiction on Jewish themes, seeking to inform Gentile readers about Judaism, Jewish traditions, and life in Eastern European ghettoes. Modernist bookplate of Alex de Hass on rear pastedown, moderate edgewear on the boards, near fine. A collection of Cocteau's pen and ink drawings, mostly portraits, which was dedicated to Picasso.In October of 1946 Cocteau visited Amsterdam to attend the Dutch premiere of his famous film La Belle et la Bete. During this visit he was hosted by the Dutch songwriter and performer Alex de Haas. This volume has two large original drawings by Cocteau, one on the front fly, the other on the half-title, each dedicated by Cocteau to de Haas.Additionally affixed to the front pastedown is an original gelatin silver photograph (9.25" x 6.5") of Cocteau speaking at a press conference in Amsterdam, as well as a later color portrait of Cocteau from a magazine affixed on the copyright page. Additionally, on the recto of the rear fly-leaf is an original drawing by the well-known Dutch caricaturist Eppo Doeve, depicting de Haas paying homage to Cocteau on the stage of Tuschinski Theatre, 28 October 1946. This copy is referenced in the Dutch literary journal De Parelduiker May, 2007, pp.36-44.

The binding is fine, the text has some minor foxing, occasional minor stains, and marginal wear; ink date stamp on copyright page, and following page has stamped number, though no other evidence of what may be ex-library marks.

[.] Alors que les Gobelins se renouvelaient, la Manufacture de Beauvais, sclérosée, travaillait sempiternellement sur les mêmes cartons. Tout change avec la nomination de Jean Ajalbert, avocat, écrivain et critique d'art, en 1917, à la tête de ladite Manufacture. « Regretteur du passé ? », disait-il, « Non. A tout le connu, je préfère le nouveau ». Il sollicite le peintre Raoul Dufy dans les années 20 pour travailler à Beauvais. Le peintre s'était intéressé dès 1911 à l'art textile en réalisant pour le couturier Paul Poiret ses premiers tissus imprimés. C'est avec cet ensemble que le peintre aborde, en 1924, la technique de la Tapisserie. [.] Le paravent à quatre feuilles, un panorama de la capitale ("Panorama de Paris", 1924-1933) ou un plan tel qu'aurait pu l'imaginer un enfant émerveillé, rend un hommage appuyé à la Tour Eiffel, traitée ici comme « un objet-souvenir », thème de prédilection aussi des artistes des Années folles, qu'elle continue d'enchanter. Qu'on songe, parmi d'autres, et après Apollinaire, à Delaunay, à Chagall ou à Cocteau. L'originalité créative de Malraux à La Lanterne aura été l'aménagement d'un Salon de Musique inédit et tout à fait étranger à « l'esprit des lieux ». Création pour lui a toujours rimé avec rébellion. Dès la mi-septembre 1962 en effet, le Mobilier national livre, sur sa demande, au Pavillon de La Lanterne « l'Ensemble mobilier Paris » de Raoul Dufy : un paravent, un canapé, deux grands fauteuils, quatre petits fauteuils et quatre chaises qui stagnaient depuis 1933 dans les réserves. Malraux quitte La Lanterne à l'automne 1967 pour rejoindre Louise de Vilmorin à Verrières-le Buisson, les Antimémoires achevés. L'Ensemble « Paris » sera rendu au Mobilier national le 2 avril 1969, comme en témoigne un reçu des archives. [.] Françoise Theillou : « Malraux décorateur : un Salon de musique pour La Lanterne ». [.] Poiret a fait la connaissance de DUFY en 1910 alors que ce dernier travaillait à la réalisation de bois gravés destinés à illustrer « Le bestiaire ou cortège d'Orphée » de Guillaume Apollinaire. C'était le premier travail du genre que réalisait le peintre. Pour un coup d'essai ce fut un coup de maître qui laissa Poiret admiratif. L'idée d'une collaboration avec le peintre germa tout naturellement dans l'esprit du couturier. A peine pensée, cette collaboration fut scellée ! Les deux hommes ouvrirent à la fin du printemps 1911 un petit atelier d'impression sur tissu. [.] En 1925 Dufy exécute 14 tentures pour Paul Poiret qui en décore ses trois péniches pour l'exposition internationale des Arts décoratifs. [.] Celles-ci sont aujourd'hui éparpillées à travers le monde. Certaines n'ont jamais réapparu depuis l'exposition. Nous ne pouvons les admirer que sur de vieux clichés en noir et blanc. (= Heften) erschienenen illustrierten, linksgerichteten Kunst- und Kulturzeitschrift modernistischer Prägung, herausgegeben vom Dichter, Publizisten und Filmkritiker Panteley Mateev Karasimeonov (1989-1957). »Ek« brachte literarische und essayistische Beiträge, sowie Kritiken zu gegenwärtigen Tendenzen und Ereignissen von Literatur, Kunst, Theater und vor allem Film, die teils aus der Feder von namhaften Vertretern des Modernismus stammen, u.a. von Svetoslav Minkov und Teodor Trayanov. Außergewöhnlich ist das Periodikum insbesondere dank der abwechslungsreichen, im expressiven Spannungsfeld von Maschinenästhetik, Art Deco-Karikatur und dämonischem Expressionismus angesiedelten Umschlagzeichnungen mit Tusche von Ivan Milev, der wohl insgesamt für die typografische Gestaltung von »Ek« verantwortlich war, wie mehrere in vergleichbarem Stil gezeichnete Rubrikentitel (u.a. „Literatur") vermuten lassen. Diese Arbeiten Milevs, neben Georges Papazov und Khristo der wohl bedeutendste bildende Künstler Bulgariens im 20 Jh., stellen im schmalen Oeuvre des früh Verstorbenen eine Besonderheit dar. Einerseits schafft es Milev einmal mehr mit wenigen Pinselstrichen und lediglich unter Verwendung von schwarzer Tusche der sprichwörtlich „dämonischen", bulgarischen Variante des Expressionismus ein prägnantes Gesicht zu geben. Vergleichbare Zeichnungen entstanden 1922 für den Gedichtband »Arena« von Lamar, die Auswahl »Fantasien« von E. A. Poes Erzählungen (sh. Jacono 13), sowie für die Prosasammlungen »Die blaue Chrysanteme« des „Dämonisten" Svetoslav Minkov und »Tod« von Minkovs Wegbegleiter Vladimir Polyanov (alle Titel in der Slg. H. & H. R.). Andererseits beinhalten die Zeichnungen für »Ek« aber auch für den düsteren Milev ungewöhnliche karikaturistische Nuancen. Die Originalzeichnungen für die Umschläge der Nrn. 1 und 2 von »Ek« wurden von Milev auch signiert. Umschläge der Nrn. 3-7 mit Besitzervermerk, das fragile, teils stark holzhaltige Papier an den Rändern stellenweise mit sehr kleinen Fehlstellen und Einrissen; mehrere Hefte teils fingerfleckig und mit Faltspuren. Von außerordentlicher Seltenheit, die Zeitschrift ist weder in der Bulgarischen Nationalbibliothek vorhanden, noch über OCLC, KVK und Google in irgendeinem institutionellem Bestand weltweit nachweisbar. - Bulgarische Periodika, Annot.       Ernst Engel, Offenbach a Main 1924 - One of 100 copies in full vellum with a hand-painted person with scarf on the upper board (perhaps an angel with bobbed hair -- very 1920's). A beautifully printed "Te Deum", in black and red, and with blue and red initials. The bookplate of the "Typographic Library and Museum of the American Type Founders Company" is on the pastedown with shelf location for the book, and a small slip with 72/100 and the shelf no. glued to the top of the pastedown with the shelf number visible as a tab at the top of the textblock. Two blank leaves at the rear are creased.

This is a beautifully bound, deluxe presentation copy of a work the "Encyclopedia Judaica" calls "an enthusiastic survey of Zionism's spiritual and messianic roots." The title here is a phrase from the liturgies of Passover and Yom Kippur familiar to all members of the Jewish faith, a prayer/wish to celebrate the holy day "next year in Jerusalem," returning to the Promised Land. Here, however, the brothers Tharaud disparage "those Western Jews who were happy to dispatch their [Eastern European] brethren to a Promised Land with which they themselves felt only nominal links." Judaica) The French novelists and essayists Jérôme (1874-1953) and Jean (1877-1952) Tharaud wrote both fiction and non-fiction on Jewish themes, seeking to inform Gentile readers about Judaism, Jewish traditions, and life in Eastern European ghettoes. Their view of Zionism changed in the decade after this work was published, and they eventually embraced the idea of enforced separation of Jewish and gentile societies. Publisher's pink paper covered boards printed in cream and green over cream cloth spine. Illustrated with three tipped in photographic plates and silhouette illustrations in pink and green throughout the text. A better than very good copy, the boards somewhat faded but the binding square and firm. The contents are entirely complete and without loose or torn pages. The pages with sporadic foxing are otherwise bright throughout and without previous owner's inscriptions or stamps. A rare one year anniversary celebration of The Savoy Orpheans. Formed by Debroy Somers in 1923, the dance band were resident at the Savoy Hotel in London between 1923 and 1927. The owner of the Savoy Rupert D'Oyly Carte, billed the Orpheans “probably the best-known bands in Europe”. The band disbanded New Year's Eve 1927 when the management contract with the Savoy ended. Inscribed in black ink on the title page “To Ernst Rolf / With very best wishes + gratefulness / for his appreciation of my band. / Debroy Somers / (leader Savoy Orpheans) / Dec. 9th 1925”. The recipient Ernst Ragnar Johansson (20 January 1891– 25 December 1932), was a Swedish actor, singer, composer and musical revue artist famous throughout the 20's for producing dazzling sets featuring first class actors and exeptional music.       Buch u. Kunstdruckerei Lutze und Vogt, Berlin 1924 - Illustrated with 7 mounted reproductions of Ryback's paintings. First edition. In publisher's illustrated wrappers. (14) p. Catalogue of Ryback, the Yiddish Avant-Garde painter's exhibition, held in Berlin in 1923-1924. Isaacher Bar Ryback (1897-1935) was a Ukranian-French painter, one of the most prominent figures of the Yiddish Avant-Garde movement who worked with handing down the Jewish tradition in modern art. In the 1910s he participated in several progressive activities in Kiev and Moscow. During the October Revolution in 1917, Ryback was a member of Central Committee of the Jewish Cultural League in Kiev as a painter and instructor. He left for Germany in 1921 and stayed in Berlin until 1924. He became a member of Novembergruppe, the German expressionist group, together with Otto Dix and Georg Grosz. He exhibited his paintings both at the Juryfreien Kunstausstellung, the Berliner Secession as well as in the Buch- und Kunsfheim K. & E. Twardy. Ryback spent the last years of his life in Paris. He had several exhibitions in Paris, and also in Cambridge, Brussels, Antwerpen, and Rotterdam. Artistically restored. In fine condition. The official report on the 1922 Tokyo Memorial Peace Exposition is the very model of what an official report on an exhibition should be. You could just about rebuild the whole thing from this. The detail extends to measured drawings of light fittings, plans of the garden beds and coloured reproductions of the tickets and advertising. The 1922 Peace Memorial Exhibition, celebrating the League of Nations and a bright future, was the most lavish national Expo ever held. The pavilions were a mix of stately, ultra modern and funfair fairy tale.

Spine slightly bumped, marking to bottom corner of rear corner, very minor staining to endpapers. A very good copy in the dust jacket, which is slightly creased around the edges and to the spine, and has been discretely taped at the extremities. Illustrated with 245 photographic plates and 50 blueprint working drawings. First edition, first impression, of the most comprehensive contemporary book on the subject, with a preface by Sir Herbert Austin.         In Our Time

      Three Mountains Press, Paris 1924 - 30pp. First edition. One of 170 copies. Illustrated with a frontispiece author portrait by Henry Strater, an American painter and fellow expatriate who became friends with Hemingway in Paris. This is the author's second book, published in a smaller edition than his first, a pamphlet of which 300 copies were printed. The sixth and final volume of a series of works by important modern writers, edited by Ezra Pound, titled "The Inquest into the State of Contemporary English Prose." The book contains eighteen terse, untitled chapters, which Edmund Wilson called "dry compressed little vignettes." A book with the same title was published in the U.S. the following year containing fifteen short stories for which the chapters in the present edition served mainly as introductory vignettes. Only two vignettes from this book were titled and used as full stories: "A Very Short Story" and "The Revolutionist." Most reviewers saw an affinity to Gertrude Stein in Hemingway's spare prose style, and F. Scott Fitzgerald felt "a sort of renewal of excitement at these stories wherein Ernest Hemingway turns a corner into the street." In tan boards, printed in red with a pattern of clippings from newspapers in several languages, and the title in black. Slight wear to extremities, else a very fine copy.
