Rolland, Romain, Schriftsteller und Nobelpreisträger (1866-1944).
Villeneuve, Vaud, 3. VII. 1924, Gr.-8°. 3 1/2 Seiten. [Click Below for Full Description]

HARDY, Thomas.
Dorchester: Privately printed for Mrs. Thomas Hardy by Henry Ling,, 1924. Quarto. Original cream wrappers, front wrapper printed in black, stitched as issued. Housed in a custom blue cloth chemise and blue quarter morocco slipcase. Covers a little fingermarked, else a fine copy. First edition, sole impression, number 8 of 25 copies numbered and initialled by Florence Emily Hardy; this copy is additionally signed by the author at the end of the poem. Hardy wrote this work at the request of the RSPCA as part of their centenary celebrations. It was printed in The Times on 16 June 1924, where it was stated that there was no copyright. Florence Hardy moved to secure the copyright by rapidly producing her own copies on the same day. In a letter to Sydney Cockerell on 21 June 1924, Florence Hardy said that she had discovered that others were planning to print their own copies. "I at once telephoned to our local printer, Mr. Ling,... and explained the situation, and he rushed up and got the poem in print in less than an hour" (Purdy, p. 232). This did not, however, prevent other separate printings of the poem, including by the First Edition Club. Copies signed by Thomas Hardy are rare; the last to appear at auction was in 1956. Purdy pp. 231-2. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Comte de Lautréamont
London: Cassanova Society, 1924. Anniroc Rare Books ________ Meteor of a madman whose brief, intense flash inspired a significant art movement... The Lay of Maldoror Comte de Lautréamont[Isidore Lucien Ducasse] London, 1924 First edition in English of Les Chants de Maldoror. Covers bowed as usual, top half of the front board moderately stained, else Very Good. Printed on handmade paper, uncut and containing three tissue-guarded plates after the French symbolist artist, Odilon Redon. Excitingly, in the rare dust jacket that's unrepaired and integral - adjectives scarcely applicable to the few surviving ones as they most often look like they've endured a tortuous journey through Ducasse's imagined hellscapes. 'Isidore-Lucien Ducasse(1846-1870) was a Uruguayan-born French poet who, under the pseudonym Comte de Lautréamont, published Les Chants de Maldoror in 1869. Although he died as a relatively unknown writer, his works resurfaced and became a crucial inspiration for the burgeoning surrealist movement in the early twentieth century. It was while reading Les Chants de Maldoror that French surrealist André Breton discovered the singular phrase that became foundational to the surrealist doctrine of objective chance: "as beautiful as the chance encounter of a sewing machine and an umbrella on an operating table." This metaphor captures one of the most important principles of … [Click Below for Full Description]

In that time he took over 40,000 photographs and made over 10,000 wax cylinder recordings to illustrate a detailed written record of the lives, languages, and beliefs of over 80 different tribes. The importance and the urgency of the task was clear to him, as he wrote in the introduction to his first volume in 1907, "The information that is to be gathered ... respecting the mode of life of one of the great races of mankind, must be collected at once or the opportunity will be lost.

Wegener, Alfred
London: Methuen & Co, 1924. First English Edition. Very Good. First English language edition, first printing. 212 pp. + 8 [ads]. Bound in publisher's original red cloth stamped in blind with titles in gilt on spine; lacking the dust jacket. Very Good with cloth lightly soiled and spine-faded. Small bookseller ticket to front paste down; previous owner name L.N.G. [Louis Napoleon George] Filon, who was an English mathematician and Vice Chancellor at the University of London, to front free endpaper offsetting onto half-title page. Small ink notation to first page of publisher's catalog. Pages toned, and with foxing to preliminary, terminal pages and textblock edge. The first English language edition, translated from the third German edition of Wegener's seminal 1912 work in which he postulates the theory of continental drift, hypothesizing that the contents are slowly drifting around the Earth. A controversial idea which was widely rejected by the scientific community at the time, it was not taken seriously until the mid-20th century when new developments in Paleomagnetism began to yield data in support of Wegener's theory. Today, the evidence is quite extensive, substantiated by fossil records showing similar plants and animals on the shores of different continents, suggesting they were once conjoined. Though Wegener was not the first to look at the globe and surmise the continents looked like fitting jigsaw puzzle pieces--that South America could fit closely to Africa, North America to Europe and that Antarctica, Australia, India and Madagascar fit next to the tip of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hong Kong.: The South China Morning Post Ltd., c1924. Hong Kong.: The South China Morning Post Ltd.. c1924.. A fund raising poster in aid of war orphans and children's charities organised by the Ministering Children's League at the Cercle Sportif (Shanghai?) or (Saigon?) Saturday April 12th at 3pm. (1924) 76 x 50.5cm. The original art work is in pencil and ink on tracing paper, with some art work pasted down. It is fascinating to see the work in progress compared with the finished poster which is printed in black - on fragile paper, but in very good condition. Original works from East Asia at this time are extremely scarce because of their ephemeral nature. Even though we have extensively researched these items published by the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong, there remains the possibility that this event could have taken place either in Cercle Sportif in Saigon or in Shanghai. Cercle Sportif Français,- Shanghai. - 1926 Rue Cardinal Mercier, French Concession. Known universally as the "French Club", this building was the home of Shanghai's most popular social and sporting clubs. Unlike the stuffier Shanghai Club and the American Club, this was the most cosmopolitan club in town, even extending its membership to women (quelle horreur!); although to balance this madness, female membership was limited to 40. The club featured a roof-top terrace (for summer dances), restaurants, a ballroom, restaurants, bars, billiards room and games room. For the more active, there was a huge swimming pool and twenty tennis courts. The clubhouse was designed by Shanghai's leading Fre … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Kokusai Jōhōsha]. 國際情報社, Taisho 13 [1924]. [Kokusai Jōhōsha]. 國際情報社. Taisho 13 [1924]. Delightful folding pictorial colour world map. Published as a supplement of Kokusai Shashin Joho. Some small sections of insect damage with minor loss, few small holes at folds, some light browning and soiling visible on margins and reverse. 78 cm x 109.6 cm. A good copy of a very handsome map. Charmingly playful this vibrantly illustrated map of the world was issued as a special New Year's Supplement and is filled with illustrations of social, cultural and historical features. The intricate typeface of the heading evokes an ethnographic tone, setting the stage for a display of the wonders of the world. Pictographs of people and industries from around the world are mixed with those of ships, sea and wildlife. Penguins gathered along the edge of the Antarctic gaze up at the world above them with great interest. Numerous white-faced clocks indicate time zones, showing the time difference from noon in Japan. Traveling east makes the time after noon; traveling west, before noon. There is also a disclaimer in remarks in the lower left corner regarding geographic accuracy owing to the focus on points of interest in countries around the world with the advice to "consult another map for precise information about locations." The seas are filled with fish and ships contain explorers such as Magellan and Vasco da Gama, groups of Japanese migrants heading for South America, and even an American evading prohibition by swigging alcohol at sea. Continents are richly illustrated with images of loc … [Click Below for Full Description]

Year Books or annuals documented the accomplishments and participants in specific industries. The Year Books for the motion picture industry are especially important for historians: for each year they catalog films released, highlight events, provide comprehensive listings of industry companies and personnel, reprint company financial statements, and contain evocative advertisements from industry suppliers, vendors, producers, stars and directors. If magazines are the day to day history of the media industries, then year books follow that progress with a more objective perspective, while still looking at the industry as an inside player.
