Seidmann-Freud, Tom
Berlin: Peregrin-Verlag, 1924. Near fine.. Original quarter tan cloth, color pictorial paper boards. 12 full-page color lithographs by Seidmann-Freud. Text in German. [28] pages. Faint rubbing, a few spots, and marginal toning to boards. First edition and only edition of what many consider Seidmann-Freud's finest work, with her characteristically strange hand-colored illustrations. Seidmann-Freud was Sigmund's niece, an innovator in writing and illustrating books for children in Germany. This was the first children's book of the Peregrin Press, founded by the artist and her husband, the journalist Jakob Seidmann, as part of the avant-garde crowd in 1920s Munich and Berlin. Seidmann-Freud's color lithographs bring to children's books concepts from Constructivism with a touch of the surreal - they deserve more recognition today, which is partially inhibited by her books' scarcity: they "disappeared from bookstores in about 1937 owing to the author's non-Aryan descent" (Hürlimann). Scarce, especially in this condition.

Gaze's work will likely appeal to those who appreciate Rackham and Outhwaite. Scarce in dust jacket.

Milne, A.A.
New York: Dutton, 1924. Near fine in good jacket.. Original quarter cloth, color pictorial boards. In original pictorial dust jacket. Illustrated by E.H. Shepard with color cover and pictorial endpapers ((neither of which appear in the U.K. edition) and black & whites throughout the text. Some rubbing to bottom edge and tips of cloth. Scarce jacket with wear, significant chipping, and repairs. Signed limited first American edition, one of only 100 large paper copies signed by Milne (out of a total edition of 500), of the first book in the Winnie-The-Pooh series. When Milne - a successful playwright, novelist, and PUNCH columnist - decided to turn his hand to children's verse, his American publisher recalled the anxiety it occasioned: "We are all aware that probably the most hopeless kind of manuscript a publisher expects to receive from his favourite author is that of poetry for children" (quoted in Thwaite). Milne's goal with the collection was to write "Like Stevenson, only better" (referring to the classic CHILD'S GARDEN OF VERSES). Published only two weeks after the UK first, this first Pooh book would quickly become a phenomenon: since "Christopher Robin goes hoppity, hoppity, hop," one mother from New York recorded, "We all had to hop. We kept it up until I was overcome by exhaustion" (quoted in Thwaite). One of the 100 signed copies, especially retaining its dust jacket, is exceptionally desirable.

YASAR NEZIHE [BÜKÜLMEZ], (1882-1971).
Kitaabhane-i Sudi/ Vatan Matbaasi., [H.: 1340], Istanbul, 1924. Contemporary very decorative green cloth bdg. Marbled boards. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In Ottoman script. 238, [2] p., 1 b/w portrait of Nezihe, ills. Nezihe was considered as one of the female poets in the Ottoman Period. She is known as a writer of the first Turkish poem for International Workers' Day on 1 May. Yasar Nezihe differed from other female poets of the period in the sense of her life story and a contrary literary identity. Throughout her lifetime, she wrote her poems about her penurious and challenging childhood as well as her love life and marriages. Being known as the first female poet whose works were published in Aydinlik Dergisi (i.e. Enlightenment Journal), Yasar Nezihe also became prominent for supporting labor unrests and her activist identity. She was recognized as a socialist poet who gave voice to poverty in her poems. She wrote the poem named "Gazete Sahiplerine" (i.e. To Newspaper Owners) addressing the executives with the intent of supporting laborers who were on strike because of the disagreement between newspaper owners and Mürettipler Cemiyeti (i.e. Typesetters Society). (Source: Wikipedia). This is her second poetry book. Being the first female poet wrote in Aydinlik Dergisi, Yasar Nezihe Bükülmez was accused of being a communist because of her writings, her membership of Osmanli Amele Cemiyeti and support for labor unrests and was arrested. Book has a biographical introductory text by Rifat Necdet Evrimer, (1898-1971) who was a Turkish / Ottoman poet, educator, and biographer. Firs … [Click Below for Full Description]

A.A. Milne
London: Methuen & Co, 1924. Please see my description. For sale i have a highly desirable and very scarce true UK 1st Edition / 1st Printing of the ever popular and absolute classic childrens book 'When We Were Very Young' . This is the first book from the original Winnie The Pooh quartet introducing the world to Pooh Bear & Christopher Robin for the very first time. It is a collection of poems and verse including some of Milne's most famous 'Halfway Down' etc. Originally appearing in parts in the Punch magazine this is the first published edition as one and the first printing with very few numbers. Included is the original leaflet that came with the book which is a real bonus. The book is bound in the publishers original blue covers with gilt decoration and titles etc. Overall a good honest example showing some marking to the boards and a little rubbing/bumps etc. Internally the book has the plain white end papers as called for which can only be found on the true 1st/1st as they were changed to yellow pictorial from the second print onwards. The contents are again good with some age markings from being read and a little browning to the end papers. One small tear to the rear end paper and a little tugging to the gutters else tightly bound, firm and not too bad. All page edges bright gilt with just the one date of First Published 1924 as called for. Beautifully illustrated by Milne's friend E H Shepard as with all the Pooh originals. Included is the original advertising leaflet that came with the book. This in itself is rare so accompanies the book beautifully. The dust jack … [Click Below for Full Description]

Coppard, A. E.
n.p.: n.p., 1924-1930. Cape letter splitting at folds, others all about very good. 6 letters on 7 sheets (varying sizes) all but 1 on Coppard's stationary. All are addressed to "Dear Mr. Grubb" - a member of the London office staff of G. P. Putnam's Sons. All relate in some manner to literary concerns, including - in a 2-page letter of 21-3-27 - Coppard's opinion of Gertrude Stein's "A Description of the Fifteenth of November." In a 4-page letter dated 6-2-30 Coppard provides extensive biographical information about himself as well as dated lists of his published works and projected dates for upcoming publications. The preceding seems to explain the Jonathan Cape letter - dated 13th Feb., 1930 - a reply to Mr. Grubb's request for biographical details on Coppard, stating that "He is something of a recluse and even in our own publicity we find it very difficult to extract any information at all, in fact . . . we have none of a personal nature." The last letter, dated 13-11-30 - following the salutation "Here you are, Mr. Grubb!" contains an untitled poem in 8 lines: "I made this book, / But it came out pink; / Like a Harlem cook / I made this book. / O, the pains I took / With my blue-black ink! / I made this book -- / but it came out pink. [signed] A. E. Coppard." This perhaps reflecting the publication in March, 1930 of Coppard's "Pink Furniture: A Tale for Lovely Children with Noble Natures."

Bronte, Charlotte, Emily, and Anne
John Grant, Edinburgh, 1924. Twelve octavo volumes (8 1/8 x 5 1/2 inches; 205 x 140 mm.). Handsomely bound ca. 1960 by [Rivière] for Henry Sotheran in three-quarter red calf over red cloth boards ruled in blind. Spines decoratively tooled in gilt in compartments, two blue and green morocco lettering labels, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers. Frontispieces and plates. Half-titles and title-pages printed in red and black. Seven of the green spine labels are faded, otherwise near fine. The Thornton Edition was first published in 1905, named for the village on the outskirts of Bradford, West Yorkshire best known as being the birthplace of the Brontës. The moorlands of that area "had a profound influence on the writing of Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Bronte.at their home the children created a rich imaginary world. Any books that came their way were eagerly devoured, and they produced their own books as well" (Bronte Society). As the sisters rose to adulthood, their novels began to focus on the complex emotional lives of women from all walks of life -- from orphans to governesses to heiresses -- but with the greatest emphasis on those whose educations and livelihoods most reflected their own. With clear-sightedness, they used their knowledge of gendered, economic, and social constraints to develop their best material. Again, the moorlands of their upbringing affected their writing. Anne's work was like a still day before a storm. And "if Charlotte's novels keep up a stiff wind, Emily's one novel is a thunderstorm. Their characters.have such a gust of life that they transcend realit … [Click Below for Full Description]

The first English language edition, translated from the third German edition of Wegener's seminal 1912 work in which he postulates the theory of continental drift, hypothesizing that the contents are slowly drifting around the Earth. A controversial idea which was widely rejected by the scientific community at the time, it was not taken seriously until the mid-20th century when new developments in Paleomagnetism began to yield data in support of Wegener's theory. Today, the evidence is quite extensive, substantiated by fossil records showing similar plants and animals on the shores of different continents, suggesting they were once conjoined. Though Wegener was not the first to look at the globe and surmise the continents looked like fitting jigsaw puzzle pieces--that South America could fit closely to Africa, North America t … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pellicer, artist. Satiric articles by Aulouis de Hoyas y Prient, W. Fernander Florez, Gilde Escalente, etc. (Names of authors often in an indecipherable script and so names we give are approximations)
Madrid: Lithography: Eusebio Fernandez. Printer: Sucesor de Regino Velasco. , 1924. Wraps. Thin cord tie. . Very Good. Wonderful caricatures of the Spanish leisure class done in the spirit of Sem. Scarce -- no copies found on OCLC First Search. Folio, 36 by 25.5 cm. Unpaginated, 56 pages, plus wrap covers. Subjects of fun include court regalia and costume, activities such as billiards, dancing, equestrian sports, theater and opera going, and overarching everything, the effete attitudes, the snobbish airs, the posturing and pretensions of the elite. All the caricatures are rendered in rich color. There are four double paged color plates, five single page color plates, and four full page advertisements in color, one of whose illustration is mounted, the others being done directly on the page. This is in addition to the color illustration on the front cover and the color ad on the rear. There are 21 pages devoted to ads in total, predominated by ultra-luxury brands such as Rolls Royce, thus evidence that the target audience for this publication was the sector of society it was lampooning. (Advertisers include Studebaker, Renault, Alpha-Romeo [sic], Buick, Minton China, as well as several banks, jewelers and obviously high-end furniture stores.)The ads also often have striking graphics and real beauty, and they contribute significantly to the visual pleasure of the publication. There is also an abundance of caricatures rendered virtually always in color interspersed throughout the 20 or so pages of text.
