        The Russian Economic Review].

Plamya Prague -1928 1925 - Issues No1 - 12, all published, octavo (24 x 17 cm), with portrait of Alexander Chuprov and tables. Publishers wrappers, unopened. Complete set in exceptionally fresh condition of this rare émigré periodical revealing the economic reality behind the well polished propagated data of the early Soviet Union. Its editor Sergey Prokopovich (1871, Tsarskoe Selo – 1955, Geneva) was a Russian economist, sociologist and liberal politician. With the same enthusiasm that he welcomed the February Revolution of 1917, he subsequently opposed the October Revolution, which overthrew the provisional government where he held several ministerial portfolios. In 1922 he was expelled from the Soviet Union for his anti-revolutionary activities and work with American and Western European aid agencies. In emigration in Berlin Prokopovich initiated establishment of the Economics Cabinet [????????????? ???????], a research institute based in Czechoslovakia that united Russian émigré economic and social scientists. Among them were economists P. Struve, M. Bernatskiy, A. Chuprov and B. Brutskus; historians A. Kizevetter, E. Shmurlo and B. Nikolskiy; jurists N. Timashev and L. Petrazhitskiy. With financial support from the Czechoslovakian government, the Economic Cabinet was publishing several periodicals, including the Russkii ekonomicheskii sbornik (Russian Economic Review) offered here. Its articles contain analysis of the levels of harvests and production in the Soviet Union, legal aspects of the nationalisation policy, a role of private capital, national and international trade, emigration, and Russian Diaspora in France and South America . In this periodical great minds used the official Soviet data combined with their own firsthand knowledge of the Russian economic system to analyse the real state of the economy and impact of the so-called New Economic Policy [???]. This capitalism-oriented economic policy was introduced by Lenin in 1922 after the Russian Civil War, and was aimed at fostering the economy of the country, which was in ruins. This system of mixed economy, which permitted private individuals to own small enterprises and encouraged foreign investments while keeping banks, foreign trade, and large industries under the state control was abolished by Josef Stalin in 1928. Conclusions made on the pages of the Russkii ekonomicheskii sbornik were in many ways different from the picture painted by the official Soviet Union, and their accurateness became obvious only after the collapse of the Soviet state many decades later. Very rare, especially when complete. Not in the holdings of the Russian National or State Libraries. No complete sets on the market; no auction records in the recent decades. Not in Savin.         De Civitate Dei Contra Paganos, Libri XXII [The City of God, or The City of God Against the Pagans]

[Munich]: [Bremer Press], 1925. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Simons, Anna. No. 333 of 385 copies, Folio - over 12 - 15" tall, 690 p. Saint Augustine of Hippo is arguably the most influential Christian theologian in the entire two thousand years of Church history; his best known works are his "Confessions" and this, The City of God, which serves as a cornerstone of Western thought. In it Augustine discusses many of the profound questions of theology, such as the suffering of the righteous, the existence of evil, the conflict between free will and divine omniscience, and the doctrine of original sin (N.B., from Wiki). This copy, published by the Bremer Press and printed entirely in Latin (with occasional Greek), was the third book of their "Folio Series", the first two being Dante's Divine Comedy in 1921 and Homer's Iliad in 1923. A starkly handsome production with intial capital letters by Anna Simons; in "A Century for the Century" the editors describe this work as "monumental" and go on to say "the powerful title page is among the most beautiful produced by the press; Wiegand's small, clear roman type, set very tightly, is used here with great impact, matching the power of Saint Augustine's words. The specifics of type, inking, presswork, and paper are close to perfection."***DESCRIPTION: Binding of light blue paper over boards, white paper spine label with black lettering, plain endpapers, all text in Latin, 20-page Critical Appendix (Adnotatio Critica) beginning at page 609, followed by a 25-page Index (Index Locorum); folio size (approximately 14" tall), 690 pages, special roman and greek types on Zanders handmade paper, limited edition of 385 copies, this no. 333. Housed in a slipcase covered with the same blue paper, no lettering or decorations.***CONDITION: Near fine, with clean binding, a strong, square text block, solid hinges, perfectly square corners without rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; some sunning to the spine, some very light abrasions (apparently from the slipcase), and one cracked gutter (pgs. viii and viiii), else fine. The matching slipcase is also near fine, complete, strong and sturdy, with minimal sunning around the opening and extremely light wear to the paper covering on the bottom.***CITATIONS: Ransom, Bremer Press, no. 30; A Century for the Century, no. 14.***POSTAGE: Due to size and weight, international customers please note that additional shipping will apply; we are happy to ship at cost, please inquire for details.***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Panoramic photograph from two gelatin silver prints, 143 x 340 mm, laid down on its original board mount; verso with wet stamp 'Copyright Photograph by "Sydney Mail"'; the gelatin prints are in very good condition; accompanied by contemporary card inscribed 'Loading blocks of granodiorite to be used in constructing the pylons of the Harbour Bridge. Moruya.'; card a little foxed and with rusting paper clip. An article in Inside History Magazine provides some fascinating insights into the story of the quarrying of granodiorite at Moruya for the facing of the supports and pylons of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The quarrying project employed some 250 stonemasons from Scotland, Italy and Australia from 1924 until the bridge's completion in 1932.         Hansel and Gretel and Other Stories by the Brothers Grimm

London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1925. Signed limited first edition. Quarto, original three quarters orange cloth over marbled boards, patterned endpapers. Number 470 of 600 copies signed by Kay Nielsen. Illustrated by Kay Nielsen with 12 mounted color plates, and black and white illustrations. In very good condition. Nielsen's place in history has become universally acknowledged and his name is invariably invoked as one of the deities of the golden age of illustration, alongside such immortals as Arthur Rackham, Walter Crane and Edmund Dulac... [Hansel and Gretel] would prove to be his last great work. The pictures show a still-evolving artist; they are slightly less formal, demonstrating perhaps a folk-art influence, with greater use of color" (Silvey, 488).

PAPERS OF DEVOTION OF JAMES II: BEING A REPRODUCTION OF THE MS. IN THE HANDWRITING OF JAMES THE SECOND NOW IN THE POSSESSION OF MR. B. R. TOWNLEY BALFOUR

Oxford: Printed [at the Oxford University Press by Frederick Hall] for Presentation to the Members of the Roxburghe Club, 1925. Apparently the FIRST EDITION y. The ultra-exclusive Roxburghe Club takes its name from the celebrated bibliophile John Ker, third duke of Roxburghe (1740-1804), who put together an unprecedented collection of some 10,000 items, the majority being early books, especially works printed by Caxton. In 1812, during the evening of the day those books were dispersed at auction, the most distinguished of the patrician bibliophiles in attendance at the sale dined together in St. Albans Street. No doubt stirred to a special fervor as a result of the auction (Valdarfer's 1471 edition of Boccaccio, for which Roxburghe paid £100, had sold for the astronomical sum of £2,260), the 18 assembled collectors founded the Roxburghe Club, which ever after has counted among its membership a small elite of bibliophiles. Written during the period of James' exile after his conversion to Roman Catholicism, the present volume contains loosely connected papers by the king giving his thoughts on religion, the text taken from an original manuscript and printed here for the first time. Although the piety he expresses did not always govern his personal behavior, the king is obviously sincere in his reflections, and although he had the reputation for being endowed with less than a superfluity of intellectual prowess, the writing here shows that he had thought deeply about his life and faith. As some indication of the limitation of the press run here, the membership roll at the front of this work lists 40 members of the Roxburghe Club, with the Earl of Derby, who prepared this work for the group, listed 11th. There could not be a copy anywhere in finer condition than this one.. 292 x 229 mm. (11 1/2 x 9"). xxx pp., [1] leaf, 173, [5] pp.Introduction by Godfrey Davies. Apparently the FIRST EDITION. Original Roxburghe binding of maroon half morocco over red textured cloth boards, flat spine with titling in gilt, top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed. One facsimile manuscript plate. Presentation card reading "With the Earl of Derby's compliments" laid in at front. Title page, dedication, and membership list printed in red and black. This copy originally prepared for Sydney Richardson Christie-Miller (his name printed in red in the Roxburghe list as a way of indicating this). Endpapers with a hint of foxing, but A VIRTUALLY PRISTINE COPY. The ultra-exclusive Roxburghe Club takes its name from the celebrated bibliophile John Ker, third duke of Roxburghe (1740-1804), who put together an unprecedented collection of some 10,000 items, the majority being early books, especially works printed by Caxton. Jongejan, De humor-”cultus” der Romantiek in Nederland, Zutphen 1933, p.435-440"."Vijf anonieme publicaties in één band. De ‘Physiologie van Den Haag' staat op naam van dr. W.J.A. H.P. Timmers Verhoeven of W.F.G.L.

Photo Album]: Hunting and Fishing in New England and Canada 1925-1930

      - Oblong octavo. Measuring 11.75" x 7.25". String-tied flexible cloth with "Photographs" stamped on the top board. Modest edgewear on the boards, near fine. Contains 272 black and white gelatin silver photographs. Images are various sizes between 1.75" x 2.75" and 3.25" x 4.75", mostly mounted between three and six to a page; one addition 6" x 9" photo on the last page is of a mounted buck . One or two have fallen out or are otherwise lacking, but clearly the album hasn't been pillaged. A few are faded, most are near fine or better. The vast majority are captioned. A beautifully composed and photographed album of hunting and fishing trips in Canada (Quebec, Ontario), and many locations in New England, and the Adirondacks between 1925 and 1930, with one trip to Maryland, Ohio, and West Virginia. Most of the trips seemed to be month or even season-long family trips and are dominated by the proud display of catches of fish and game. Locations are clearly identified, including Lake Chaplain and Bingham Fall, Vermont; Vanderwhacker Mountain and Lake Placid, New York; Lac La Croix and Lac Rognon in Canada; to name a few. While there are many typical camping scenes, the majority are of people in the field, with catches of minks, rabbits, bucks, and various fish proudly displayed by both male and female sporting folk. An unusually nice, well-captioned and finely realized subject specific album.

"The 'discursive' series and the 'figurative' series that make up Simulacre exist independently of each other, according to Leiris. Nonetheless, it is difficult to believe in a simple juxtaposition of poems and lithographs. The poet who wrote several texts in [Masson's] studio at rue Blonet certainly found inspiration in certain canvases. Even if the lithographs do not directly illustrate the poems, they set up a dialogue with them" (Renée Rise Hubert, Surrealism and the Book, Berkeley, 1988, p. 28).         Large photogravure portrait in sepia.

      - Chicago, Skandinaven, [c. 1925]. Printed on stiff, thick paper, measuring 56 x 36 cm; well-preserved. This print must have been issued in connection with the end of the three-year expedition in the ship Maud, which had been frozen in the Arctic Sea of the Northeast passage, and finally managed to break free and sail to Seattle in 1921. 'In 1918, with a newly-built polar ship, the Maud, Roald Amundsen started on a new expedition which was to drift over the Arctic Ocean and maybe over the North Pole. With him were nine men, including scientific leader H.U. Sverdrup. It took two years for them to sail through the ice-filled Northeast Passage, and one more year stuck in the ice north of the Bering Strait before Amundsen gave up and tried instead to fly over the Arctic Ocean. Meanwhile the Maud continued with a reduced crew until 1925 without managing to get into the east-west current. The main result of the Maud expedition was the important scientific data which Sverdrup collected and analysed during the entire expedition' (Fram Museum, online). The hull of the ship is currently being transported back from Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, where she had been frozen in and sank in 1930.
