        Doodab

Boni & Liveright|~| NY: Boni & Liveright. 1925. The first book by this novelist and publisher who was also a figure in the American expatriate community in Paris during the 1920s. Loeb helped Hemingway get his first book, In Our Time, published in the U.S.: in fact, it was when Leon Fleischman, Boni & Liveright's literary scout, came to Paris with the contract for Doodab for Loeb that Hemingway turned over the stories that Liveright published later that year. Despite the support and encouragement Loeb gave Hemingway, he became the basis for the character Robert Cohn in The Sun Also Rises, an unflattering portrait that Loeb later tried to correct in his 1959 memoir The Way It Was. Foxing to endpages and edges of text block; near fine in a very good dust jacket with some blended staining and tanning, minor edge chipping and a narrow, closed tear at mid spine. . First Edition. Hardcover.

        The Making of a Stockbroker

New York: George H. Doran,1925. First edition. Octavo, original maroon cloth. In near fine condition. Without the rare dust jacket. The Making of a Stockbroker was published by George H. Doran Company in 1924. Lefevre dedicated his book to John Wing Prentiss, a new breed of stockbroker of that era. This fictionalized account follows a brokerage firm from its founding through 1924, and the author explains how the stockbroker can work from the inside to make earn lucratively without using propagandic whitewashing. Lefevre follows the narrative of John Kent Wing to also portray the inner-workings of the market while contributing to the decade's new image of managers. Lefevre wrote during the great bull market of the 1920s, and he befittingly conceived of virtuous public-spirited manager, one who places long-term economic stability above selfish interests. The Making of Stockbroker is therefore an instruction for personal form in light of human nature, but it is also a history of the market after the age of the buccaneer but before the great depression and subsequent security regulations.

Le Nouveau Monde (à l'envers): Histoire Helas! L'Envers d'une Altesse: Pour servir a l'histoire/de ce temps

Paris [1925]. large 4to. 20pp - Paris [1925]. large 4to. 20pp. A portfolio of images of the infamous Luis Ferdinand d'Orleans y Borbón, Infante d'Espagne, outrageous gay character, drug dealer, cocaine addict, friend to Cocteau, Mistinguett, Marcel Proust among others. Luis Ferdinand is portrayed in a number of outrageous poses, cavorting with sailors, sniffing cocaine, dressing as a woman and soliciting policemen, etc. He was expelled from France on several occasions for dealing in drugs (dressed as a woman on one occasion) and King Alfonso XIII of Spain eventually deprived him of his rights as an Infante of Spain. In 1930, he married (the much older) Marie Constance Charlotte Say, widow of Prince Henri Amédée de Broglie and the owner of the Château de Chaumont, creating great controversy in the process. His relationship with Proust is detailed in Gury, C. Proust et le "très singulier" infant d'Espagne. Undoubtedly Sem's most outrageous published collection of images. Very good in original decorative wrappers, warmly inscribed by Sem on the title page "Pour Jean Cocteau, Ces enfants terribles! affectueusement. Sem." The book also bears the notation, also in Sem's hand: "Cet album est un peu culotte (si j'ose dire) mais c'est un des derniers qui me restent." Wrappers have been lightly restored with one closed tear, the marbled boards are lightly worn with some slight loss at spine and light repair, leather label.Quite rare, particularly in the wrappers; only one institutional copy found. See Rodriques, J. El Infante Maldito: La Biographía de Luis Fernando de Orleans, el Más Depravado Princípe Borbon. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        The Professor's House

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1925. First Edition. The Professor's House was Cather's first commercially successful book. The 20,000 copy first printing was sold out three weeks prior to publication, and within a month of distribution the book had already outsold any of her previously published books, ultimately going into eight printings within the year it was issued. CRANE A14.a.i. First Printing. Octavo (19.5cm.); red-orange boards quarterbound in purple, stamped in gilt on the spine with red-orange topstain; dustjacket; 284pp. Spine gilt is slightly dulled (as is nearly always the case), minor soiling to the topstain and some faint spotting to the front board, with mild foxing to the rear blanks and the upper right corner of the front board slightly tapped but still sharp; overall a solid Very Good+ copy. The dustjacket shows a few very shallow nicks at the crown and upper corner tips, a 1/4 inch closed tear at the upper edge of the front panel, with a few shades of darkening to the spine panel, though titles are still dark and perfectly legible. Front panel nearly detached from spine panel, held together only by a single tape mend on the verso at the crown; Very Good. Despite the aforementioned flaws, the tear is virtually invisible from the outset and shows quite nicely.
