        Pola Negri [Cyrillic]

Moscow, Library of Popular Film, 1925 - Small octavo. Single quire wire stitched into pictorial pink wrappers printed in black. Housed in a black quarter morocco solander box made by The Chelsea Bindery. Stock browning as always, very short split at the fold, numeral to inside of lower wrapper. An outstanding copy of a tissue thin gossamer of a book. First edition, first printing. The author's first book and a rare one. This biography of the leading silent screen actresses of her day was written at the age of 20. It was the only book to be published in Russia before Rand emigrated. Her second work also devoted to the cinema was released without authority after she had fled for America. Only two or three copies have appeared at auction in 30 years. [Attributes: First Edition]

Six Drawings by E.H. Shepard Illustrating Poems from When We Were Very Young

London: Methuen. [1925]. First. First edition. Folio. Large quarter cloth and papercovered boards portfolio with printed labels containing six loose prints, each of which is hand-numbered as number 31 of 250 numbered copies. One of 250 copies of this suite of illustrations for the first Winnie-the-Pooh book. Soiling and wear to the portfolio, very good; the prints themselves are all pretty much fine, with the two largest prints with very light marginal wear; several of the original tissue guards have offset from their facing illustrations (likely the set remained undisturbed for many years). Very attractive and scarce. .

AUTOGRAPHED LETTER SIGNED (ALS) to his son James about his injured leg

Nov. 19 [@1925], Marion - A two-page AUTOGRAPH LETTER on both sides of Roosevelt's personal Hyde Park stationery, completely in FDR's hand, to his son James Roosevelt SIGNED as "Father." In full: "It is mighty nice news that the leg is getting on well & that nothing happened to a nerve or bone - but it must be hard to lug around a heavy plaster cast. My heart went out to you that Wednesday on the first play - I have never known quite such a piece of hard luck - and to have lost the game would after that have been too much - I can't tell you the number of old grads from Bob Emmons down who came up & sympathized with you & me - & nearly all of them made the point that you had done your full share in the building up of the team, & that you share fully in final victory. I am sending you 'One Increasing Purpose' by Hutchinson - I like it & I think you will if you can get into it past the first 100 pages-- I expect to get to Aunt Margaret's on Thanksgiving Day at about noon & hope to find both you & Elliott - I take it you both will go back to school [Groton] that night. Write me details - I will return to Marion at 4 p.m. so on to let Ray & John have their Thanksgiving Dinner that night. Ever your affectionate Father." James Roosevelt broke his leg during his final year at Groton, ending his football career. He became an insurance executive, a position he left in 1937 to become secretary to his father in the White House. He was decorated for his service as a Marine in World War II. Normal creases from folding. Near Fine [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Ms. Brief mit eigenh. U. ("Retschke").

Paris, [um 1925]. - 1 S. Gr.-4to. Die Verso-Seite mit gedr. Briefkopf "Die Weltbühne [.] Paris".

        The Professor's House

Alfred A. Knopf, New York 1925 - The Professor's House was Cather's first commercially successful book. The 20,000 copy first printing was sold out three weeks prior to publication, and within a month of distribution the book had already outsold any of her previously published books, ultimately going into eight printings within the year it was issued. CRANE A14.a.i. First Printing. Octavo (19.5cm.); red-orange boards quarterbound in purple, stamped in gilt on the spine with red-orange topstain; dustjacket; 284pp. Spine gilt is slightly dulled (as is nearly always the case), minor soiling to the topstain and some faint spotting to the front board, with mild foxing to the rear blanks and the upper right corner of the front board slightly tapped but still sharp; overall a solid Very Good+ copy. The dustjacket shows a few very shallow nicks at the crown and upper corner tips, a 1/4 inch closed tear at the upper edge of the front panel, with a few shades of darkening to the spine panel, though titles are still dark and perfectly legible. Front panel nearly detached from spine panel, held together only by a single tape mend on the verso at the crown; Very Good. Despite the aforementioned flaws, the tear is virtually invisible from the outset and shows quite nicely. [Attributes: First Edition]

The Lost World. Being an account of the recent amazing adventures of Professor George E. Challenger, Lord John Roxton, Professor Summerlee, and Mr. E. D. Malone of the "Daily Gazette"

New York: A.L.Burt [1925], 1925. Scarce early American printing in the desirable pictorial film tie-in jacket featuring a colour still from the movie; Octavo, publisher's hardback cloth in dustwrapper. Both book and jacket are a little used, some small chips and tears. A very good, attractive copy. The 1925 First National Pictures movie 'The Lost World' was the first adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic novel about a land where prehistoric creatures still roam. The film is also notable for a brief appearance from the author himself!

        The Western Shore

Harcourt Brace, New York 1925 - 8vo, pp. 303. Original black boards, lettered in brown on front panel and spine. Very slight bumping to cornares and spine ends, one small scuff to top edge of rear panel. A near fine copy, lacking the extremely scarce dustwrapper. First edition. Clarkson Crane (1894-1971) attended Berkeley, and this campus novel, set in 1919 and featuring a homosexual English professor, seems based on his time there (although the professor in question has never been identified). The Western Shore was poorly reviewed, and its gay content (which is considerable) was almost entirely ignored. Only the poet and playwright Stephen Vincent Benet made any reference to it : in his review for the New York Herald Tribune he warned that the novel contained passages that 'might well prove distasteful.' Crane, from a wealthy Chicago family, served in France in the U. S. Army Ambulance Corps during World War I. Unable to earn a living from his writing back in California he returned to France in 1923 and joined the expatriate community in Paris, writing this novel in a small Left Bank hotel. After its failure, Crane produced nothing for twenty years, and when his two novels of the 1940s also failed, he stopped writing altogether. A near fine copy of a very scarce title -- one of the first gay campus novels.

Study of the Higher Nervous Activity (Behaviour) of Animals. Conditioned Reflexes].

Gos. izdatelstvo Skt. Peterburg and Moskva 1925 - Tall 8vo (24 x 16 cm). Photographic portrait frontispiece, 397, [2] pp. with illustrations in text; inscription on title dated 1925. Original printed wrappers, last quire splitting, plain dust jacket, worn at extremities, housed in a modern red morocco-backed cloth slipcase. Fine copy, signed by the first owner and with Pavlov's own inscription tipped-in: "V polne odobryayu. 8 Yunya 1935. I. Pavlov [I fully agree/confirm. 8 June 1935]". In 1903 Pavlov made the first public statement on the conditioned reflex, and was awarded the Nobel Prize of medicine in 1905. He later broadened his research, gaining a deep insight in the subject over the following twenty years, based on his experimental research into the relation between the nervous system, the brain, and behaviour. Extending experimental physiology into psychology, he and his team laid the foundations of the behaviourist school. 'In recent years he has come to be regarded as a mechanist who saw complex behaviour as the sum of individual conditioned reflexes. This is a profound error, since in Pavlov's view the brain, through its capacity for subtle analysisand complex synthesis, integrates a vast range of conditioned reflexes into coherent behaviour corresponding to the specific circumstances and needs of the organism' (DSB). Pavlov's research institute is depicted in this third edition with photos and plans. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        INQUISICIONES. Signed.

Proa, imprenta El Inca, Buenos Aires 1925 - Inscribed to the great Spanish author Ramón Gomez de la Serna First edition. 8vo. A very good or better example in the original light blue wrappers - name erasure on the ffe. [Helft p.28; Becco 50], "Para el amigo y colega Ramón Gomez de la Serna / con el agradecimiento de / Jorge Luis Borges. Buenos Aires 1925" [For the friend & colleague Ramon Gomez of the Serna, with the gratefulness of Jorge Luis Borges. Buenos Aires 1925]. This is Borges' first collection of essays. The publication was limited to 500 copies & it was never reissued. Inquisiciones already contains the seminal concerns that Borges would follow for the rest of his writing life. It was never reprinted, however Borges followed it with Otras Inquisiciones, his most important collection of essays. In Inquisiciones, Borges is firmly rooted in two traditions, both classic & modern. The first is Hispanic, from Quevedo "perfecto en las metáforas, en las antítesis, en la adjetivación, es decir, en aquellas disciplinas de la literatura cuya felicidad o malandanza es discernible por la inteligencia" (perfect in metaphores, in antithesis, in adjectivation, that is to say, in those disciplines of literature whose felicitous or erroneous usage is discernable by the in tellect), & Torre Villaruel to Unamuno, Herrera Reissig, & Ramón Gómez de la Serna & Cansinos Asséns. The second tradition is Anglo-Saxon, from Thomas Browne " un ensayo bastante malo, tal vez el primero que se escribió sobre él en idioma español". ( a rather bad essay - perhaps the first that was written about him in Spanish) [Autobiografía, p.80]) to Joyce, including the idealist philosophy of Berkeley. The Germanic tradition is also present with a translation of 3 poems: "Soy culpable de la españilización de los versos". (I am guilty of the Spanish translation of these verses). It is in "Examen de metáforas" where Borges manifests the formulation of his own rhetoric which governed his writing through his Ultraist years to his later wo rks. However years later he retracts this essay: "basta un solo buen verso no metafórico para probar que la metáfora no es un elemento esencial Otro (ensayo) casificaba las metáforas como si se pudiera prescindir sin problema de otros elementos poét icos, por ejemplo el ritmo y la música". (A single good verse without a metaphor is sufficient to prove that the metaphor is not an essential element. Another (essay) classified metaphors as if one could do away with other poetic elements without any problem, rhythm and music, for example). [Autobiografía, p.80]. An extraordinary Copy.         The Prisoners of War. A Play in Three Acts.

London: Chatto and Windus, 1925 - Octavo. Original orange cloth, printed paper label to spine. With the supplied dust jacket. Some minor spotting to fore edge, terminal leaves lightly browned, spine faded title label tanned and rubbed but a very nice copy in the dust jacket with a couple of tears and a small chip to the lower panel. First edition, first impression, hardback issue. With the author's signed presentation inscription to the front free endpaper, "For my dear George 'Conrad', with my admiration & gratitude. Joe. Aug. 20 1925". George Hayes (1888-1967), then a noted young Shakespearean actor, took the leading part of Ackerley's alter ego, Captain Conrad, in the first production on 5 July 1925, a Sunday night performance at the Royal Court Theatre under the aegis of Phyllis Whitworth's Three Hundred Club. Others in the cast included the actors Raymond Massey and Carleton Hobbs, and the designer James Whale, future director of The Bride of Frankenstein, while the audience included Hugh Walpole, T. E. Lawrence, John Lehmann and Siegfried Sassoon. Presenting the play under club conditions was a well-established way of evading the need for the Lord Chamberlain's licence, and necessary for Ackerley's daring work, the first twentieth-century play produced upon the London or Broadway stage to deal with homosexual desire.         Uber quantentheorestische Umdeutung kinematischer und mechanischer Beziehungen; Zur Quantenmechanik; Zur Quantenmechanik II

Julius Springer, Berlin 1925 - FIRST EDITIONS of three papers that defined a discipline: THE THEORETICAL FOUNDATION FOR QUANTUM MECHANICS. "In May 1925, Heisenberg deliberately abandoned the classical picture of particles and orbits, and took a long, hard look at the mathematics that describes the associations between pairs of quantum states, without asking himself how the quantum entity gets from state A to state B. In the summer of 1925, working with Pasqual Jordan, Born translated Heisenberg's mathematical insight into the formal language of matrices, and Born, Heisenberg and Jordan together published a full account of the work, in what became known as the 'three-man paper'. The equations of Newtonian (classical) mechanics were replaced by similar equations involving matrices, and many of the fundamental concepts of classical mechanics- such as the conservation of energy- emerged naturally from the new equations. Matrix mechanics seemed to contain Newtonian Mechanics within itself, in much the same way that the equations of the general theory of relativity include the Newtonian description of gravity as a special case" (Gribben, Q is for Quantum). Heisenberg, Werner. Uber quantentheorestische Umdeutung kinematischer und mechanischer Beziehungen. Particle Physics: One Hundred Years of Discoveries: "Foundation of quantum mechanics, Heisenberg approach. Nobel Prize to W. Heisenberg awarded in 1932 'for the creation of quantum mechanics'". With: Born, Heisenberg and Jordan "Zur Quantenmechanik II" in Zeitschrift für Physik, 35, 1926, pp.557-615

      - FIRST EDITIONS OF THREE LANDMARK PAPERS THAT TOGETHER FORMED THE THEORETICAL FOUNDATION OF QUANTUM MECHANICS. "In spite of its high-sounding name and its successful solutions of numerous problems in atomic physics, quantum theory, and especially the quantum theory of polyelectronic systems, prior to 1925, was, from the methodological point of view, a lamentable hodgepodge of hypotheses, principles, theorems, and computational recipes rather than a logical consistent theory. Every single quantum-theoretic problem had to be solved first in terms of classical physics; its classical solution had then to pass through the mysterious sieve of the quantum conditions or, as it happened in the majority of cases, the classical solution had to be translated into the language of quanta in conformance with the correspondence principle? In short, quantum theory still lacked two essential characteristics of a full-fledged scientific theory, conceptual autonomy and logical consistency" (Jammer, The Conceptual Development of Quantum Mechanics, 196). The work of Heisenberg, Born, and Jordan in these papers began to rectify these issues and together marked the "starting point for the new quantum mechanics," also called matrix mechanics (DSB). "In May 1925, Heisenberg took on a new and difficult problem, the calculation of the line intensities of the hydrogen spectrum. Just as he had done with Kramers and Bohr, Heisenberg began with a Fourier analysis of the electron orbits. When the hydrogen orbit proved too difficult, he turned to the an harmonic oscillator. With a new multiplication rule relating the amplitudes and frequencies of the Fourier components to observed quantities, Heisenberg succeeded in quantizing the equations of motion for this system in close analogy with the classical equations of motion. In June Heisenberg returned to Göttingen, where he drafted his fundamental paper [the first paper offered], which he completed in July. In this paper Heisenberg proclaimed that the quantum mechanics of atoms should contain only relations between experimentally observable quantities. The resulting formalism served as the starting point for the new quantum mechanics, based, as Heisenberg's multiplication rule implied, on the manipulation of ordered sets of data forming a mathematical matrix. Born and his assistant, Pascual Jordan, quickly developed the mathematical content of Heisenberg's work into a consistent theory with the help of abstract matrix algebra [the second paper offered].Their work, in collaboration with Heisenberg, culminated in their "three-man paper" ["Dreimännerarbeit" - the third paper offered] that served as the foundation of matrix mechanics. Confident of the correctness of the new theory, Heisenberg, Pauli, Born, Dirac, and others began applying the difficult mathematical formalism to the solution of lingering problems" (DSB). CONDITION & DETAILS: In: Zeitschrift für Physik 33 (1925), 34 (1925), 35 (1926). 8vo. (9 x 6.25 inches; 225 x 156mm). Three full volumes. All but invisible ex-libris stamp on title pages; no other library markings whatsoever. Handsomely rebound in grey linen, gilt-tooled and lettered at the spine. Tightly and solidly bound. Very clean inside and out. Near fine condition.
