(from an English translation) Jean Cocteau collaborated on many photographically illustrated editions, this was the first. This photogravure from a Rayogram is one of Man Ray's most subtle and beautiful.         LETTERS FROM A GLOBETROTTER -- Written for Members of the Round-the-World Society: A collection of stencilled letters, mailed by the author, with original postage stamps.

NY: Round-the-World Society, 1925. First Edition. Leatherette. Very Good. Approx 170pp; frontispiece and one other sketch by the author, foldout map, 11 b&w plates from photographs; 68 original foreign-postage stamps affixed to letters with integral address panels. Contains 43 letters from the Arctic, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, etc. Raymond's letters are rich in anecdotes, conversation dialog, and local color. The first 12 letters are all datelined in the Arctic, and were saved for mailing from Belgium later. Next are eight letters from Germany, France, and Monaco. Then, 20 letters mailed from North Africa; and finally, three from Spain. Each of the 43 letters comprises three stenciled pages and the address panel. All of the letters are addressed to Andrew P. Howarth, Oxford, Mass., USA. Each had been folded for mailing, then opened by the subscriber and put into this post-and-screw binding of black leatherette over flexible boards. A picture and title on the cover are either stamped in blind or worn-away gilt; covers are dusted inside and out, text is mostly clean. 9" x 6.25 Raymond created the Round-the-World Society and attracted subscribers to whom he would send his globetrotting letters. Beginning with the 12 Arctic letters, EDR records his travels by ship to Spitzbergen, with descriptions of the North Cape, Barents Sea, Greenland Sea, Bear Island, VanPost glacier, Amundsen Memorial at King's Bay, through Virgo Bay, and his finding the "remains of [Swedish aviator] Andree's Balloon Expedition," including gas tanks, ropes, personal belongings, etc., all of which he "leaves...undisturbed as I found them" on the shore of Virgo Bay. One letter, titled "A Great Experiment in the Arctic," describes attempts by Westerners to exploit the mineral wealth of Spitzbergen, even though "Eskimos in Greenland and Lapps in Finland...are inefficient laborers...[so] a new race of white men able to inhabit this polar archipelago" is needed to work the mines. He describes coal mining at Longyear City, where "nearly all the miners are single" and only 20 women are there, one of whom gives birth to "the first member of a possible new race: the White Arctics." ~~ The 20 letters from North Africa begin with EDR's arrival in Tunis after a stormy voyage; the ruins of Carthage; vignettes of local Muslim life in the Old Quarter; a 26-hour train trip to Algiers; visits to the Kasbah and feasts with a sheik; "Monkey Land" (Ruisseau de Signes); falcon-hunting on horseback with a sheik; &c. Leaving Algiers, Raymond travels the 2,000 miles to Morocco in a "large touring car" ; visits Oudjda, Fez, and the domain of Abd-el-Krim; the Riffs demand a ransom from the Christian who has defiled a saint's tomb by getting near to it; dinner at a campfire ends in a hail of bullets as a "band of Riffians" swarms uphill; &c. The letters from Belgium, Germany, France and Spain have interesting content as well. ~~ [WorldCat locates only the SUNY-Buffalo holding of this title.]

Boston: Small, Maynard & Company. (1925). First. First edition. Fine in attractive, very near fine dustwrapper (with art by Harold Cue), with a couple of tiny nicks. Powell's rare first novel, a blatantly autobiographical novel about a small town girl in her twenties from the Midwest aspiring to become a writer in New York, haunting Greenwich Village, drinking in speakeasies, finding romance and success, and finally tarted up at the conclusion with an uncharacteristic and unbelievable happy ending. According to biographer Tim Page: "Powell disavowed the book almost immediately, well before her second novel, She Walks in Beauty, was promoted as her debut in 1928. Thereafter, she refused even to acknowledge Whither in her biography or in lists of her publications...she...was quite put out when her young friend Hannah Green found a copy in a secondhand bookstore in the early 1960s." Powell was a satirical, proto-feminist novelist who has recently been rediscovered. Gore Vidal, whose critical essay helped restore her fame, called her a better satirist than Twain and said that she was "our best comic novelist." Although Ernest Hemingway once told her she was his "favorite living novelist", she was not averse to poking fun at Hemingway himself, which she did in her novel, The Wicked Pavilion. Novelist Lisa Zeidner, in a review of the recent biography of Powell in The New York Times Book Review, said that "she is wittier than Dorothy Parker, dissects the rich better than F. Scott Fitzgerald, is more plaintive than Willa Cather in her evocation of the heartland and has a more supple control of satirical voice than Evelyn Waugh, the writer to whom she's most often compared." Powell was an archetypal free spirit, living much of her life in Greenwich Village, taking -- and flaunting -- lovers frequently although she was married, and mercilessly skewering the postures and foibles of an array of New York types, from the bohemian artists to the wealthy tycoons. Reportedly Powell went out of her way to purchase and destroy copies, which may be why this is only the second jacketed copy we have seen. A true rarity, the spurned first novel of an iconic New York writer, in the pretty much impossible jacket. .

Sirén later referred to this work as, "my well known repertory Chinese Sculpture from the Fifth to the Fourteenth Century, vols. I-IV, London, 1925, ..... the illustrations in this work are often useful for the comparative analysis of style on which our classifications are based."       Moscow, Library of Popular Film, 1925 - Small octavo. Single quire wire stitched into pictorial pink wrappers printed in black. Housed in a black quarter morocco solander box made by The Chelsea Bindery. Stock browning as always, very short split at the fold, numeral to inside of lower wrapper.       London: Methuen. [1925]. First. First edition. Folio.         AUTOGRAPHED LETTER SIGNED (ALS) to his son James about his injured leg

Nov. 19 [@1925], Marion - A two-page AUTOGRAPH LETTER on both sides of Roosevelt's personal Hyde Park stationery, completely in FDR's hand, to his son James Roosevelt SIGNED as "Father." In full: "It is mighty nice news that the leg is getting on well & that nothing happened to a nerve or bone - but it must be hard to lug around a heavy plaster cast. My heart went out to you that Wednesday on the first play - I have never known quite such a piece of hard luck - and to have lost the game would after that have been too much - I can't tell you the number of old grads from Bob Emmons down who came up & sympathized with you & me - & nearly all of them made the point that you had done your full share in the building up of the team, & that you share fully in final victory. I am sending you 'One Increasing Purpose' by Hutchinson - I like it & I think you will if you can get into it past the first 100 pages-- I expect to get to Aunt Margaret's on Thanksgiving Day at about noon & hope to find both you & Elliott - I take it you both will go back to school [Groton] that night. Write me details - I will return to Marion at 4 p.m. so on to let Ray & John have their Thanksgiving Dinner that night. Ever your affectionate Father." James Roosevelt broke his leg during his final year at Groton, ending his football career. He became an insurance executive, a position he left in 1937 to become secretary to his father in the White House. He was decorated for his service as a Marine in World War II. Normal creases from folding. Near Fine [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Ms. Brief mit eigenh. U. ("Retschke").

Paris, [um 1925]. - 1 S. Gr.-4to. Die Verso-Seite mit gedr. Briefkopf "Die Weltbühne [.] Paris".

        The Professor's House

Alfred A. Knopf, New York 1925 - The Professor's House was Cather's first commercially successful book. The 20,000 copy first printing was sold out three weeks prior to publication, and within a month of distribution the book had already outsold any of her previously published books, ultimately going into eight printings within the year it was issued. CRANE A14.a.i. First Printing. Octavo (19.5cm.); red-orange boards quarterbound in purple, stamped in gilt on the spine with red-orange topstain; dustjacket; 284pp. Spine gilt is slightly dulled (as is nearly always the case), minor soiling to the topstain and some faint spotting to the front board, with mild foxing to the rear blanks and the upper right corner of the front board slightly tapped but still sharp; overall a solid Very Good+ copy. The dustjacket shows a few very shallow nicks at the crown and upper corner tips, a 1/4 inch closed tear at the upper edge of the front panel, with a few shades of darkening to the spine panel, though titles are still dark and perfectly legible. Front panel nearly detached from spine panel, held together only by a single tape mend on the verso at the crown; Very Good. Despite the aforementioned flaws, the tear is virtually invisible from the outset and shows quite nicely. [Attributes: First Edition]

The Lost World. Being an account of the recent amazing adventures of Professor George E. Challenger, Lord John Roxton, Professor Summerlee, and Mr. E. D. Malone of the "Daily Gazette"

New York: A.L.Burt [1925], 1925. Scarce early American printing in the desirable pictorial film tie-in jacket featuring a colour still from the movie; Octavo, publisher's hardback cloth in dustwrapper. Both book and jacket are a little used, some small chips and tears. A very good, attractive copy. The 1925 First National Pictures movie 'The Lost World' was the first adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic novel about a land where prehistoric creatures still roam. The film is also notable for a brief appearance from the author himself!
