[Manuscript]: A Prophet in his own Country

[No place: no publisher. 1925]. Typed manuscript. 170pp., typed rectos only. Each chapter has been paper-clipped together, separate from the other chapters. Some oxidation from paper clips with some scattered tears and chips throughout, and moderate tears and chips to the final few pages, about near fine. Numerous pencil corrections, although a relatively finished draft. An apparently unpublished novel by William E. Batron about Jesus returning as an American in the early 20th Century. Also included is a good only original mailing envelope addressed to the publisher ("Bobbs Merrill Co.") with a return address that states, "From William E. Barton, Foxboro, Mass." Barton (1861-1930) was a religious scholar and prolific author of national acclaim -- reportedly his entry in the 1930 edition of Who's Who in America was the longest in the book. Today he is best known for his books about Abraham Lincoln and his great collection of Lincoln material, though several of his amusing religious parables have also lately been reprinted. .

        The Great Gatsby

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1925 First edition, first printing. Publisher's dark blue-green cloth, front board lettering stamped in blind, spine lettering stamped in gilt. A fine copy, with only a hint of wear to the spine ends, very slight lean to the spine, else fine. A beautiful copy, free of any repairs or restoration. Housed in a custom clamshell box. Bruccoli A11. While it has since been regarded as masterful piece of classic literature, The Great Gatsby did not gain popularity until after the author's death in 1940. The novel tells the story of the star-crossed lovers Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan against the backdrop of wealthy and materialistic West Egg, Long Island, during the Prohibition Era. Although Fitzgerald meant the text to be critical of the 1920's social climate, today The Great Gatsby is beloved for its vivid descriptions of extravagant parties, palatial homes, and eccentric characters that are emblematic of the Jazz Age. The text remains extremely popular today and is widely taught in schools across the United States. The first edition was printed in a run of 20,870 copies; today, Scribner's sells almost 25 times as many copies per year as printed books and e-books.. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Fine.

Rupert And The Magic Toy Man [SECOND EDITION]

Sampson Low, Marston & Co, London, Hardcover, Book Condition: Good Condition, Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket, Second EditionFrom the Daily Express Rupert Little Bear Series. Undated but appears to be a Second Edition which was published in 1925, (only distinguished from the first by the lack of illustrated endpapers) with the first three 'Little Bear' Titles to the back board. Please see scans for details of description and email for additional scans. In Paper covered boards with a brown cloth spine - with a colour illustration laid on the front board with its brown bear patterned border. The illustration shows Rupert wearing blue and white talking to the Lizard who is holding a bicycle. Pages printed in blue, red or brown with one illustration to each page. Book - The book has been professionally restored with the text block re-stitched and rebound with plain pastedowns and endpapers in original illustrated paper covered boards. The boards are a little worn to corners and edges and there is some surface rubbing to the front illustration and faint residue of juvenile additions mostly to top and bottom edges. The back board is somewhat grubby and lightly marked but the illustration and lettering remain clear and bright. The text is generally clean and bright with just the very occasional light mark and patch of surface abrasion, where it appears a previous owner was rather enthusiastic when erasing pencil inscriptions. This is especially true of the last page which shows Belinda, Rupert & Susan holding hands and is slightly browned as well as showing the indentations of erased inscriptions. An attractive 2nd edition copy of this early Rupert story. Size: 9.75 inches tall by 7.5 inches. Unpaginated. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 201-750 grams. Category: Fiction; Children. A Contribution to the Knowledge of the Avifauna of the Riu Kiu Islands and the vicinity

Tokyo, published by the author, . First edition 1925 - Pp. vi, 293 + 8 full page color plates (from painting by Juzo Kobayashi), 1 large folding map, 1 table. Later red morocco with five gilt-decorated raised bands with gilt-lettering in two panels and blind-stamped birds in four other panels, over rose-colored silt cloth, top page edge gilt, folio (15.25 x 10.75 inches). This monograph is based primarily on 14 months of fieldwork from 1921-1922 in the Riu Kiu islands (also known as the Loo Cho islands) that stretch between the Japanese island chain and Formosa (now Taiwan). Zoogeographically, the islands span the Palaearctic region (Japan) and the Oriental region (Taiwan); Kuroda thought this was one of the most interesting ornithological regions of the world from a zoogeographic point of view. The monograph describes 281 species and subspecies based on 1621 skins collected in 1921-22 and reviews all other specimens in museums in around the world. A very through monograph of great regional import in an exceedingly attractive binding. Less than 500 copies were printed. No ownership marks, a beautiful copy in fine condition.

The Autobiography of Mother Jones. Edited by Mary Field Parton. With an Introduction by Clarence Darrow

Chicago: Charles H. Kerr & Company. 1925. First Edition. Frontispiece portrait photograph +2 other photographs; 242pp; original blue cloth with title stamped in black on front cover and on spine, cream dust jacket with text in black, a fine copy in a fine dust jacket showing only traces of rubbing at folds and tips. & Mary Harris Jones (1830-1930), labor activist, is remembered for her work among the working poor, especially the coal miners. She helped organize the United Mine Workers and participated in the strikes of 1900 and 1902. Born in Ireland, raised in Toronto, Canada, she joined the U.S. labor force as a dressmaker in Chicago. She married a member of the Iron Molders' Union and had four children, all of whom perished in a yellow fever epidemic in 1867. In 1871 she lost all her possessions in the Chicago Fire of 1871. By 1877 her cause in life was fixed: she traveled across the country to those areas hardest hit by economic depression or labor strife. Contradictions in her philosophy abounded. Although she helped found the Social Democratic party in 1898, as well as the Industrial Workers of the World in 1905, she campaigned for the Democratic ticket in 1916. Her efforts can be summed up as always on behalf of those struggling to make a living wage in this country. No matter what the industry, she was on the side of the worker. Her efforts, though seemingly specific at the time of their occurance, had broad lasting repercussions on labor relations in this country. Public perception about the justness of labor's plight changed and, in no small measure, this was due to "Mother" Jones' activities. Eventually, these concerns were reflected in federal legislation, although not enough legislation in light of recent tragedies in U.S. coal mines. This autobiography is considered the primary source for information on her life and works. NAW II, pp. 286-288.
See an Image.
Alert

1925 - Frank Weston Benson (1862-1951) was an American Impressionist artist, and a member of the Ten American Painters. He began his Studies at the school of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 1879, under Otto Grundmann, and later studied at the Académie Julian in Paris. Upon return to America, he would become an instructor at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. In 1888 Benson gained favorable attention in his first showing with the Society of American Artist in New York, with a piece that suggested the influence of academic Realism rather than Impressionism. By the early 1890s he began using his family as subjects; Benson later recalled having realized at the time that ¿design¿ was the most important component of painting. Consequently, works of the period provided evidence of a greater interest in patterns, silhouette, and abstract design. Late in his career, Frank Benson returned his boyhood interest in ornithological illustration. Following the 1913 Amory Show, Benson quietly moved to revolutionize the field of American sporting art. His rendering of wildlife, hunting, fishing, and camping infused the field with heightened artistic sensitivity, and reinvigorated a tradition- burdened field. Historical accounts indicate that Benson¿s teenage bird studies were extremely realistic. We can infer that they were similar to works by Alexander Pope (American, 1849-1924) and Louis Agassiz Fuertes (American, 1874-1927). Those painters concentrated on painting objects with precision. Each blue jay painted by Fuertes had exactly the same color tones and patterns. This is realism in the sense that twelve jays in a cage look precisely the same. In contrast, Benson¿s artistic training brought him to realize that a viewer¿s experience of a jay¿s appearance varies with the tint of light cast by the sky, whether the jay is front lit or back lit, and the background. Furthermore, Benson realized that we did not perceive the precise feather pattern of a bird at a distance of 20 feet. Benson had learned that our eyes perceive light, not objects, and he introduced that realization into the sporting art field. Other artists such as Roland Clark, A. L. Ripley, and Richard Bishop quickly followed his lead. In 1915 he first exhibited etchings of wild fowl, to popular acclaim. After 1920 Benson turned increasingly to the depiction of landscapes featuring wild life, an outgrowth of his interest in hunting and fishing, from then on producing a steady and profitable output of etchings and watercolors in this vein. At the request of fellow artist and conservationist Jay Norwood ¿Ding¿ Darling, Benson designed the second Federal Duck Stamp on 1935. Dry Point, 7 x 10 inches

        The Informer

London: Jonathan Cape. 1925. First. First edition. About fine in a modestly age-toned, very good dustwrapper with a little shallow chipping at the crown, in a custom chemise and clamshell case. Inscribed by the author: "To Leslie Chaundy from Liam O'Flaherty." Chaundy was a bibliographer, but we won't hold that against him. A nice copy of this classic Irish novel which was the basis for the 1935 film that won four Academy Awards including Best Actor for Victor McLaglen and Best Director for John Ford.
