The Pixeyites: Original Manuscript and Artwork Satires by James Churchward

(Mount Vernon, New York). (1925-1932). A highly unusual collection of remarkable satirical manuscript stories and hand-painted color illustrations, apparently based on the Niven stones which were pre-Columbian stone tablets bearing indecipherable pictographs and related markings, unearthed in 1921 by the English mineralogist William Niven in the Valley of Mexico. Most of the original 2600 andecite tablets were lost or dispersed and have never been recovered. All that remains are Niven's original rubbings, a selection of which are here stringently reproduced by the British-born writer James Churchward as dramatic figures superimposed upon new landscapes, timelines, and situations, thereby endowing them with a new life of their own. Now, they are "Pixeyites" -- strikingly realized with humor and wit (no doubt inspired by the mythical "Pixies" believed to inhabit neolithic sites in and around Cornwall and Okehampton, Devon, where Chuchward was born). The collection consists of five hand-painted, handwritten, and hand-bound quarto volumes, totaling 272 foliated leaves, and one set of seven original artworks on 9" x 6" sheets. They were created over an eight-year period, during the same time which Churchward won international notoriety for his book The Lost Continent of Mu -- Motherland of Man published in 1926, which he claimed proved the existence of a lost continent in the Pacific Ocean. In that work Churchward presents the controversial theory that a set of ancient tablets which he discovered in India, as well as Niven's set of stone tablets, both originated from the lost, antediluvian civilization of Mu. He claimed Mu was the site of the Garden of Eden and home to an advanced civilization known as the Naacals. Whereas in this and the subsequent books published by Churchward about Mu, he supports his claims with scientific rigor, in The Pixeyites he takes imaginative delight in attacking the scientific establishment of the day by depicting the pre-Columbian symbolical figures as members of the: "Chimalpa Vaudeville Club; composed of members of the Pixey Town Scientific Society."The first volume is comprised of three parts dating from 1925-1927: Atlas and The Glacial Period. A Satire. The next four volumes comprise a four volume set. They are continuously foliated and dated from 1928-1929, with the following sub-titles: Conniption Fit No. 1. Vaudeville A; Conniption Fit No. 1 Vaudeville B; Conniption Fit No. 2. Quakes; Conniption Fit No. 3. Politics. The set of seven related paintings is titled: Sports of the Pixeyites, and is dated from 1932.In his forward to Conniption Fit No. 1. Vaudeville A, Churchward writes: "All of the figures in this satire are exact reproductions of symbolical figures found ... at Chimalpa, Remedios, San Miguel, Amantla, Santiago, Ahuizotla, and other nearby villages from 4 to 6 miles north-west of Mexico City. Not a line had been added or altered in the figures themselves. Here and there I have added something as coming from their mouths and have drawn scenes around many of them suitable to the character given them ..."The mindfulness and skill Churchward employed in recreating the stone symbols, and placing them in a variety of environments (English tea rooms, volcanic landscapes, icy tundra, verdant moorlands) is remarkable: all of the paintings are accomplished and visually striking, many have elaborate ornamental borders in the style of a Persian miniature. The personas given to the figures themselves are rarely laudable. Several are quack scientists with names like "Dr. Bighead," and they are depicted by Churchward in his written satire as espousing illogical arguments, misunderstanding concepts, backbiting, and fighting one another. Churchward insists that these elaborate volumes were never meant for publication, but were created "simply ... to amuse my friends when they visit." As he had clashed with the scientific community, so too do the stark, abstract symbolic figures clash with their lush, formal environments. The resulting aesthetic is whimsical and surreal, bordering on Dada. All five volumes are signed and/or initialed by Churchward throughout, on several of the paintings and illustrated title and half-title pages, and in his introductions and forewords. All are quartos measuring 8" x 10", in painted wraps with quarter cloth backstrips. The Atlas volume has some small holes in the margins of two paintings (not affecting the image), else all five are in fine condition with some light wear and chipping to the edges of the wraps. All of the manuscript leaves were written by Churchward in ink. The set of seven loose artworks are on thick paper sheets measuring 9" x 6". Five are signed, and six have descriptions written by Churchward in pencil on the backs. All seven are in fine condition. These could be rightfully seen as a continuation of the Mu saga, and certainly shed a great deal of light on the puckish humor that Churchward employees towards his critics. The Mu books remained in print for many decades and despite the skepticism they (rightfully) attracted, the saga continues to resonate with seekers of utopias, along with tales of the lost worlds of Atlantis and Shangri-La. These manuscripts seem eminently suitable for publication. .

Di geboite Yerushalayim a khulem oifn var. [= The Rebuilt Jerusalem, a dream of a reality]

Hebrew Publishing Company, New York 1925 - Lengthy signed inscription in Yiddish by the author, edge of the page with the inscription is frayed and a few letters missing: Volt ihr visn es vet zain mit mazl un mashiakh tzaitn dem buch geernte parnuse shleima zum andenkung fun Boris Schatz. [I understand the meaning of hte Yiddish words, but cannot make sense of their meaning here. It ends with:] "As memento from Boris Schatz." The book is loose in the binding, whose spine is worn and very, very far from pristine. Very rare first Yiddish edition. "Boris Schatz's exile on the shores of the sea of Galilee during World War I, was a time of fruitful contemplation and writing. He composed this fictional story, set in Eretz Israel one hundred years into the future, which offered a sublime alternative to the miserable reality of strife and struggle that had engulfed him in recent years. His utopian novella was a programmatic manifesto written according to the conventions of the then popular literary genre of the futuristic novel. The story opens with the biblical artisan Bezalel ben Uri miraculously appearing at the Bezalel School one day in the midst of the war and inviting Schatz on a tour of Eretz Israel in the year 2018. This device allowed the author to present a detailed description of Bezalel and the Land of Israel of the Future" (Boris Schatz: The Father of Israeli Art [Israel Museum Catalog, 2006]). Frontispiece is a full page photo of Boris Schatz. Both parts are in this volume. Part 1: 4 + 174 pages; Part 2: 215 pages. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

The Book of American Negro Spirituals. Edited with an Introduction by James Weldon Johnson. Musical arrangements by J. Rosamond Johnson.

1925 - 4to., original cloth lettered on spine and upper board. A very good copy. First edition. Inscribed by James Johnson "For George Gershwin, Sincerely James Weldon Johnson". Howard Pollack in his George Gershwin: His Life and Work comments "Of the black artists associated with Van Vechten, Gershwin established a special closeness with brothers James Weldon Johnson and J. Rosamond Johnson. In earlier years, the Johnsons had been a songwriting team much like the Gershwins with attorney James Weldon the scholarly lyricist and New England Conservatory graduate J. Rosamond the well trained composer. In the spirit of the Harlem Renaissance, the Johnson brothers also cultivated an interest in African American folk music. In 1925 and 1926, at the movement's zenith, they brought forth two volumes of Negro Spirituals. Each spiritual bore a dedication to some friend or hero including Booker T Washington and W.E.B, Du Bois, dedications that taken together helped chart the social terrain of the Harlem Renaissance. They dedicated "In Dat Great Gittin' Up Mornin'" (In the Second Volume) to Gershwin who was, with Percy Grainger and Fritz Kreisler, one of the small number of white composers so honoured.James Weldon, on hearing of Gershwin's death, sent Ira a telegram stating, "America has lost a great composer. Personally I feel his loss as a friend." The importance of Negro spirituals on Gershwin is readily apparent. In 1925, the year this book was published, he declared "I think it [Jazz Opera] should be a Negro opera, almost a Negro 'Scheherazade'. Negro, because it is not incongruous for a Negro to live jazz. It would not be absurd on the stage. The mood could change from ecstasy to lyricism plausibly because the Negro has so much of both in his nature. That type of opera could not, I am afraid, be done at the Metropolitan. It is a typically opera comique venture. I would like to see it put on with a Negro cast. Artists trained in the old tradition could not sing such music, but Negro singers could. It would be a sensation as well as an innovation." Pollack again comments, "Throughout the remainder of 1925, Gershwin occasionally voiced his intention of writing an opera for African American singers, adding that Carl Van Vechten was helping him find "a suitable libretto". "I shall certainly write an opera", he stated in the fall. "I shall write it for niggers. Blacks sing beautifully. They are always singing; they have it in their blood. They have jazz in their blood too, and I have no doubt that they will be able to do full justice to a jazz opera." The gestation of Gershwin's 'jazz opera' into Porgy and Bess did not see fulfilment until the 1930's. "The opera's distinctive absorbtion of African American oratory and music underpins its great individuality, including allusions to a wide range of black popular music from W.C. Handy to Cab Calloway; and black folk music, from street cries and children's ditties to, above all, the Negro spiritual, which informs not only many of the opera's songs and choruses but its recitatives as well."         Die beobachtbaren Grössen in der Theorie der Elementarteilchen, I-III.Berlin: Springer, 1943; 1943; 1944.

First edition of Heisenberg's S-matrix approach to the study of elementary particles, complete in three parts (a fourth part was written but not published). Although S-matrix theory was abandoned after the War due to the success of quantum electrodynamics and quantum chromodynamics, it again became very influential in the 1960s when it led to the development of string theory, which is the best-accepted approach to quantum gravity.<br/><br/> "Heisenberg's prewar researches in quantum field theory, undertaken in part with Pauli, had led him to the study of cosmic rays, the highest energy particles then available for research. When an extremely high-energy cosmic ray strikes the earth's atmosphere, it induces a shower of newly created particles and photons. This effect was to be explained on the basis of quantum field theory. Heisenberg's researches had previously convinced him and others of the inadequacy of field theories for this task. Infinities and divergences plagued all three of the available theories - quantum electrodynamics, Fermi's theory of beta decay (relating to what is now the weak force), and Yukawa's meson theory (relating to what is now the strong, or nuclear, force). <br/><br/> "The small size of elementary particles and the close approach of the particles to each other in a cosmic ray collision - which triggered the particle shower - indicated to Heisenberg during the 1930s that the difficulties in quantum field theory could be resolved only if a universal minimum length, a new fundamental constant, were introduced into the theory... according to Heisenberg, quantum mechanics itself broke down when applied to events occurring within regions smaller than the size of an elementary particle...<br/><br/> "Pauli had already suggested that Heisenberg, as he did when formulating the 1925 breakthrough in quantum mechanics, should focus only on observable quantities and attempt to exclude all unobservable variables from the theory. Heisenberg now attempted to do so, at the height of the World War. His effort led to what became after the war his widely studied new theory of elementary particles, the so-called S-matrix theory. <br/><br/> "In his new approach, Heisenberg used this hypothetical fundamental length to define the allowed changes in the momentum and energy of two colliding high-speed elementary particles. This limitation would help identify the properties of the collision that were observable in present theories. Those at smaller distances were unobservable. For two colliding particles, this yielded four sets of observable quantities with which to work: two of these were the properties of the two particles as seen in the laboratory long before they collide with each other; and two were their properties long after the collision. During the collision they approach within a distance of less than the fundamental length and are thus unobservable. These four sets of observable properties could be arranged in a table, or in this type of work, a matrix, which Heisenberg called the scattering or S-matrix. <br/><br/> "Although Heisenberg could not actually specify the four elements of the S-matrix, he demonstrated that it must contain in principle all of the information about the collision. In his second paper, completed in October 1942, Heisenberg further showed that the S-matrix for several simple examples of scattering of particles yielded the observed probabilities for scattering. It also gave the possibility for his favorite phenomenon - the appearance of cosmic-ray explosion showers...<br/><br/> "... one evening in October 1943 Heisenberg presented his new theory to an informal colloquium in Kramers's home near Leiden in the German-occupied Netherlands... During the discussion of Heisenberg's talk, Kramers made the insightful observation that if the actual elements of the matrix could ever be determined without a complete theory, they would yield a so-called "analytic function" - that is, a function containing real and imaginary parts... Back in Berlin, Heisenberg wrote immediately that he had grown "more and more enthusiastic" about Kramers remark " because I believe that with it one can really arrive at a complete model of a theory of elementary particles." Heisenberg suggested to Kramers that they collaborate on a paper on the subject... But Kramers declined to write the suggested paper with Heisenberg... Heisenberg submitted his third S-matrix paper, with an acknowledgement to Kramers...<br/><br/> "Late in 1944 Heisenberg prepared a fourth installment of his theory - a paper dealing with not just two colliding particles but with many interacting particles, all giving rise to an even more complicated S-matrix. He presented the essentials of the paper in Zurich at the end of 1944, but the paper could not be published before the presses stopped at war's end" (<i>Beyond Uncertainty</i>, pp. 347-9). <br/><br/> After the war interest in the S-matrix program declined when it was shown that the matrix elements could be calculated using the renormalized quantum electrodynamics of Feynman, Tomonaga and Schwinger. "In his paper 'The S-matrix in quantum electrodynamics,' Dyson carried out calculations of the matrix elements, including their renormalization. In the introduction, he remarked that "the Feynman method is essentially a set of rules for the calculation of the elements of the Heisenberg S-matrix and can be applied with directness to all kinds of scattering problems" ... Thus, he established contact with the earliest application of the S-matrix scheme in particle physics" (<i>Pions to Quarks</i>, p. 567). <br/><br/> "S-matrix theory was largely abandoned by physicists in the 1970s, as quantum chromodynamics was recognized to solve the problems of strong interactions within the framework of field theory. But in the guise of string theory, S-matrix theory is still the best-accepted approach to the problem of quantum gravity. The S-matrix theory is related to the holographic principle and the AdS/CFT correspondence by a flat space limit... The most lasting legacy of the theory is string theory. Other notable achievements are the Froissart bound, and the prediction of the pomeron" (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S-matrix_theory). <br/><br/> Brown, Dresden & Hoddesdon (eds.), <i>Pions to Quarks: particle physics in the 1950s</i>, 2009; Cassidy, <i>Beyond Uncertainty</i>, 2010; Cassidy, <i>Werner Heisenberg: a bibliography of his writings</i>, 1943a, 1943b, 1944a..         Über das Wasserstoffspektrum vom Standpunkt der neuen Quantenmechanik.Berlin: Julius Springer, 1926.

First edition, in original printed wrappers, of Pauli's important derivation of the hydrogen spectrum from the new quantum mechanics, providing the first validation of Heisenberg's theory. As Pauli explains in the abstract: "It is shown that the Balmer terms of an atom with a single electron are yielded correctly by the new quantum mechanics and that the difficulties which arose in the old theory... disappear in the new theory." Heisenberg's epochal 'Über quantentheoretische Umdeutung kinematischer und mechanischer Beziehungen' had appeared just a few months earlier, in September 1925. "The first nontrivial and physically important application of quantum mechanics was made soon afterwards by Wolfgang Pauli [in the present paper], who calculated the stationary energy values of the hydrogen atom by the matrix method and found complete agreement with Bohr's 1913 formulas. From this moment, there was no longer any doubt about the correctness of the theory among physicists" (Max Born, <i>Physics in My Generation</i> (1956), p. 181).<br/><br/> "Now the time had come to test the new formalism on the hydrogen atom. Dirac... had solved a two-dimensional hydrogen model ['Quantum mechanics and a preliminary investigation of the hydrogen atom,' <i>Proc. Roy. Soc</i>.,Vol. 110 (1926)]. But the real thing apparently was too difficult even for Born. Heisenberg wrote in his contribution to the <i>Memorial Volume</i> for Pauli: 'At that time I myself was somewhat unhappy that I did not succeed in deriving even the simple hydrogen atom.' Liberated from his work on the 'Quantentheorie' [<i>Handbuch der Physik</i>, Vol. 23, pp. 1-278] Pauli had gone into this problem at full pelt, and on 17 January 1926 he submitted for publication his paper 'On the hydrogen spectrum from the standpoint of the new quantum mechanics.' Already on 3 November 1925 Heisenberg had written to Pauli: 'I probably don't have to tell you how much I rejoiced at your new theory of hydrogen and how much I admire that you have made out this theory so far,' and he closed the letter with 'hearty congratulations for your theory'" (C. P. Enz, <i>No Time to be Brief</i> (2002), pp. 134-5). <br/><br/> B.L. van der Waerden, <i>Sources of Quantum Mechanics</i>, no. 16.. Pp. 336-363 in Zeitschrift für Physik, 36.
