THE UNITED STATES CENTS OF THE YEARS 1801-1802-1803

Detroit, 1925. 4to, original brown cloth, gilt. 85, (1) pages; 5 fine photographic plates; addition slip tipped in on page 73. Green silk marker with the cardboard cent gauge present. A few authorial annotations in pencil; additional pencil annotations in another hand. Loosely laid in are the July 1931 photographic supplemental plate describing and depicting new 1801 varieties and the January 1928 photographic supplemental plate describing and depicting a new 1803 variety. Inscribed to Robert C. Slone by the author on a front blank. A fine copy. One of the major pre-Sheldon works on U.S. large cents; scarce with both supplementary plates. Concerning Newcomb and this work, Dr. Sheldon wrote: "during the first quarter of the twentieth century and until his death in 1945, Howard R. Newcomb was so closely identified with the big cents that to mention cents was to mention Newcomb... The United States Cents of the Years 1801-1802-1803 ... marks a milestone in the cent literature. Approaching a field which had been left almost in chaos by the Doughty book, Newcomb assembled a vast quantity of numismatic material, ordered and reordered it, finally set up a new classificational system and a list which seemed adequate; and after testing the new list for upwards of a decade, published. The verdict of time on this work has been favorable." About as nice a copy as one will ever see. Davis 745. Voted as one of the Numismatic Bibliomania Society's "One Hundred Greatest Items of United States Numismatic Literature."

[Photo Album]: Hunting and Fishing in New England and Canada 1925-1930

Oblong octavo. Measuring 11.75" x 7.25". String-tied flexible cloth with "Photographs" stamped on the top board. Modest edgewear on the boards, near fine. Contains 272 black and white gelatin silver photographs. Images are various sizes between 1.75" x 2.75" and 3.25" x 4.75", mostly mounted between three and six to a page; one addition 6" x 9" photo on the last page is of a mounted buck . One or two have fallen out or are otherwise lacking, but clearly the album hasn't been pillaged. A few are faded, most are near fine or better. The vast majority are captioned. A beautifully composed and photographed album of hunting and fishing trips in Canada (Quebec, Ontario), and many locations in New England, and the Adirondacks between 1925 and 1930, with one trip to Maryland, Ohio, and West Virginia. Most of the trips seemed to be month or even season-long family trips and are dominated by the proud display of catches of fish and game. Locations are clearly identified, including Lake Chaplain and Bingham Fall, Vermont; Vanderwhacker Mountain and Lake Placid, New York; Lac La Croix and Lac Rognon in Canada; to name a few. While there are many typical camping scenes, the majority are of people in the field, with catches of minks, rabbits, bucks, and various fish proudly displayed by both male and female sporting folk. An unusually nice, well-captioned and finely realized subject specific album. .

OUR SOUTH AMERICAN TRIP [Cover Title]

[1925], Buenos Aires 1925 - Commercial oblong folio album in textured leather covers. String bound, approximately 11.5" x 15.5". Gilt titles (including Perkins' name) stamped to front. 49 leaves, 46 with photographs, postcards and various scrap materials mounted both recto and verso with final 3 pages blank. 177 black and white snapshot photographs in various sizes, most approximately 5.75" x 3.5". Also with: 72 photographic postcards as well as several ephemeral articles including letters, business cards, hotel receipts, programs, menus, invitations, booklets, etc. Leather flaking at cover edges with a bit of dry rot. Slightly worn at page ends, a few elements apparently perished. Otherwise well preserved with contents generally very good or better. Scrapbook and photograph album belonging to Fred W. Perkins, then Chief of the Office of Motion Pictures for the United States Department of Agriculture, chronicling his trip and work as motion picture photographer for the U.S. delegation attending the first Pan American Congress of Highways, held in Buenos Aires in October, 1925 (with 14pp. program and other scrap from same present). Images begin as the party, aboard the S.S. Santa Ana, makes its way through the Panama Canal, headed south along the western coast of South America, capturing the party’s meetings with dignitaries as well as the citizens and environs of Panama City, Talara (Peru), Lima, Mollendo (Peru), Tocopilla (Chile), Antofagasta (Chile), Chanaral (Chile), Coquimbo (Chile), Valparaiso (Chile), Santiago (Chile), Buenos Aires, Montevideo (Uruguay), Rosario (Brazil), Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Notable figures shown include President Chiari (Panama), President Augusto Leguia (Peru), U.S. General John J. Pershing, President Arturo Alessandri (Chile), President Marcelo T. de Alvear (Argentina), President Jose Serrato (Uruguay) and Governor Washington Luis (Sao Paulo). The album carefully records the delegation's travels, with all photographs meticulously captioned, and ends with a photo of the delegation being received by President Coolidge upon its return. The meeting was the first of many cooperative gatherings between the United States and the Central and South American countries who would come to develop the Pan-American Highway, Earth’s most vast roadway network. But for an approximately sixty-mile break along the Panama-Colombia border, it stretches continuously from Alaska, just south of the Arctic Circle, to the Southern tip of Chile, connecting all of The Americas. An extensive album of clearly captioned photographs, travel receipts, business and calling cards, programs, and the like. A important memento, with expertly crafted images of not only the delegation’s activities, but also Perkins at work as an early film documentarian. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Great Gatsby.

Charles Scribners, New York 1925 - First edition, first state with "chatter" p.60, "northern" p.119, "sick in tired" p.205, and "Union Street station" p. 211. Octavo, original dark green cloth. In near fine condition, with the gilt lettering to the spine bright, light rubbing to the endpaper. In 1922, Fitzgerald announced his decision to write "something new--something extraordinary and beautiful and simple and intricately patterned." That extraordinary, beautiful, intricately patterned, and above all, simple novel became The Great Gatsby, arguably Fitzgerald's finest work and certainly the book for which he is best known. A portrait of the Jazz Age in all of its decadence and excess, Gatsby captured the spirit of the author's generation and earned itself a permanent place in American mythology. Cyril Connolly called The Great Gatsby one of the half dozen best American novels: "Gatsby remains a prose poem of delight and sadness which has by now introduced two generations to the romance of America, as Huckleberry Finn and Leaves of Grass introduced those before it" (Modern Movement 48).         The Great Gatsby.

Charles Scribners, New York 1925 - First edition, first state. Sheilah Graham's copy with her signature to the front free endpaper. Graham, one of the most influential gossip columnists in Hollywood, is remembered today as the last lover of novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald, their relationship through her autobiographical account of that period, Beloved Infidel, a best-seller, which was also made into a film. In her youth, she was a freelance writer for Fleet Street in London, and had published several short stories and two novels. These early experiences would converge in her career in Hollywood, that spanned nearly four decades, as a successful columnist and author. In a letter from May 1940 to S.J. Perelman, Fitzgerald invited him to visit, promising "Sheilah will be with me, just as merry as can be, to greet you on the porch with a julep" (Letters, Turnbull, ed., 1963). Little more than six months later it was Graham who would find Fitzgerald at home dead of a heart attack. Bruccoli A11.1.a; Connolly, The Modern Movement 48.with "chatter" p.60, "northern" p.119, "sick in tired" p.205, and "Union Street station" p. 211. Octavo, original dark green cloth.         The Great Gatsby

Charles Scribner's Sons, New York 1925 - First issue, with the four main issue points present: 1) pg. 60, line 16 "chatter" 2) pg. 119, line 22 "northern" 3) pg. 205, lines 9-10 "sick in tired" 4) pg. 211, lines 7-8 "Union Street station." A Very Good + copy with touches of wear at the spine ends and light mottling of the cloth on the front board. Internal contents gernally in excellent condition, although with a small stain on pages 4-5 and a previous owner's name erased from the front paste-down a bit aggressively.Despite its grand stature today, the book was a commercial failure during Fitzgerald's lifetime, much to the author's surprise and disappointment. Fitzgerald had felt the power of the novel and believed that it was a work of mature artistry. Modern scholars and readers agree and now "Gatsby" is a keystone of any modern first collection. Very Good +. [Attributes: First Edition]
