[EARLY CINEMA PERIODICAL] Kino-zhurnal A.R.K. [i.e. The Magazine of the Association of Revolutionary Cinematography]

Moscow: Association for Revolutionary Cinema, 1925. 11 issues (#1-12 for 1925 and #1-2, 1926 [everything that was printed under this name]. 30x23 cm. In publisher's illustrated wrappers designed by P. Galadzhiev. Very good, small tears of the extremities and spines, light restoration of wrappers (#1, 1925), lacking front wrapper (#11/12), loss of paper from the spine (#2-3, 1925), the rear wrapper is detached (#2, 1925), restoration of the margins of the wrappers and a few pages (#4/5), a few damp stains on the right margin of the front wrapper (#8). Run of 10000 copies. Very rare as a full set. The important early cinema magazine. It provided the theoretical base for the changes in Soviet cinema in 1920s with articles on the montage and other new methods of editing and directing. Among the most contributors to the magazine were Eisenstein, Malevich, Room, Ardov, Pudovkin and others. Nikolay Lebedev who was the editor in these years was fired after he wrote an article in #1 of 1926 blaming Maxim Gorky for disliking cinema as a genre. In #2 Lebedev apologized but was fired soon after and the magazine was transformed into a different periodical 'Kino-front' under the editor Konstantin Yukov. In the beginning of 1920s fresh creative forces emerged in Soviet cinema from related arts. Eisenstein, Pudovkin, Trauberg, Ermler, Kozintsev and other artists of the first generation of Soviet directors made their debut. This magazine reflects that dynamic era. It was published monthly and covered Soviet, European, American and Asian cinema news. A lot of attention was paid to matters of Soviet and foreign cinema technology like cameras. It announced international cinema industry exhibitions like Berlin Film Exhibition (1925). Interesting table with titles of the foreign cinema magazines. American film industry was booming, and many materials in magazine were dedicated to actors and new pictures, to economics and producers in Holywood. In #11/12 issue there's a review of Chaplin's latest film - 'The Gold Rush'. Besides foreign news the magazine gathered data on sociology of a Soviet viewer and statistics. The article 'Commercially profitable picture' is dedicated to 'Battleship Potiomkin' that was first screened in late 1925 illustrated with the shot from the movie. Kazimir Malevich contributed with two articles in the magazine which could be regarded as a declaration of his views towards cinema as an art form. The first is titled 'I likuiut Liki na ekranah' [i.e. And Faces are Jubilating on the Screens] and the second is 'Khudozhnik i kino' [i.e. The Artist and the Cinema]. He states that the cinema should attract the biggest and most progressive artists of the day. The magazine declared itself as a periodical for the people connected to the movie industry. In #2 (1926) there's an inquiry for the readers asking their opinion regarding the magazine. The magazine had a very impressive design supplied by photos, photomontages, different types, and other elements. The constructivist design of the wrappers by Piotr Galadzhiev (1900-1971), Soviet actor, set designer and artist who besides participating in theatre productions was also an illustrator for a few film magazines. He also designed covers for the film magazine Kino-Eye and for the popular film library Kinopechat, for which he produced a cover for the 1926 pamphlet on Sergei Eisenstein and his famous film 'Battleship Potemkin'. John E. Bowlt wrote about him: «Galadzhev's art reflected the motifs of the Roaring Twenties - commercial advertising, mass communication, and the nightlife of big cities». All of this was not fitting the emerging spirit of socialist realism.

        Im Irrgarten.

Frankfurt A.M. Bertele, Bilder, Buecher, (c. 1925). Quarto. (26)pp. First edition. Written and illustrated with thirteen fantastic, chromolithographed plates by Kleyer, who studied under the expressionist painter and printmaker Ludwig Meidner. Kleyer's text, which is a series of rhyming couplets printed on facing pages, concerns a family visit to a carnival, where they enter a funhouse maze. The majority of the illustrations are concerned with depicting the various distorted reflections the two little girls, their parents, and the family dog see while traversing the funhouse. These illustrations possess a distinctly surreal aesthetic reminiscent of the pioneering artwork of Winsor McCay for his Little Nemo in Slumberland. Bound in original cloth-backed illustrated boards, which show light soiling. Overall, a near fine copy of a scarce book.

Original Watercolor of Henrik Ibsen and Four of his Heroines.

1925. A humorous cartoon measuring 10 by 8 1/2 inches. Celebrated playwright Henrik Ibsen, shown in caricature with a wild beard and hair, is depicted surrounded by four of his heroines, including Hedda Gabler and Nora from A Doll's House. Not all seem very happy to see him: Hedda points a pistol at Ibsen's back. The caption reads, "Henrik Ibsen besought by certain of his heroines to ameliorate their destinies." Hugh Deane was a Kensington-based artist, known primarily for his work on magazines and periodicals of the 1920s and 30s. Brightly colored, in the style of nineteenth-century watercolors. A few small spots of rubbing to Nora's plaid skirt, else fine.

Linards Laicens (1883-1938) is considered as central figure of the Latvian left avant-garde, outstanding revolutionary writer, one of the most eminent personalities in Latvian modernist literature.         The Book of American Negro Spirituals. Edited with an Introduction by James Weldon Johnson. Musical arrangements by J. Rosamond Johnson.

4to., original cloth lettered on spine and upper board. A very good copy. First edition. Inscribed by James Johnson "For George Gershwin, Sincerely James Weldon Johnson". Howard Pollack in his George Gershwin: His Life and Work comments "Of the black artists associated with Van Vechten, Gershwin established a special closeness with brothers James Weldon Johnson and J. Rosamond Johnson. In earlier years, the Johnsons had been a songwriting team much like the Gershwins with attorney James Weldon the scholarly lyricist and New England Conservatory graduate J. Rosamond the well trained composer. In the spirit of the Harlem Renaissance, the Johnson brothers also cultivated an interest in African American folk music. In 1925 and 1926, at the movement's zenith, they brought forth two volumes of Negro Spirituals. Each spiritual bore a dedication to some friend or hero including Booker T Washington and W.E.B, Du Bois, dedications that taken together helped chart the social terrain of the Harlem Renaissance. They dedicated "In Dat Great Gittin' Up Mornin'" (In the Second Volume) to Gershwin who was, with Percy Grainger and Fritz Kreisler, one of the small number of white composers so honoured...James Weldon, on hearing of Gershwin's death, sent Ira a telegram stating, "America has lost a great composer. Personally I feel his loss as a friend." The importance of Negro spirituals on Gershwin is readily apparent. In 1925, the year this book was published, he declared "I think it [Jazz Opera] should be a Negro opera, almost a Negro 'Scheherazade'. Negro, because it is not incongruous for a Negro to live jazz. It would not be absurd on the stage. The mood could change from ecstasy to lyricism plausibly because the Negro has so much of both in his nature. That type of opera could not, I am afraid, be done at the Metropolitan. It is a typically opera comique venture. I would like to see it put on with a Negro cast. Artists trained in the old tradition could not sing such music, but Negro singers could. It would be a sensation as well as an innovation." Pollack again comments, "Throughout the remainder of 1925, Gershwin occasionally voiced his intention of writing an opera for African American singers, adding that Carl Van Vechten was helping him find "a suitable libretto". "I shall certainly write an opera", he stated in the fall. "I shall write it for niggers. Blacks sing beautifully. They are always singing; they have it in their blood. They have jazz in their blood too, and I have no doubt that they will be able to do full justice to a jazz opera." The gestation of Gershwin's 'jazz opera' into Porgy and Bess did not see fulfilment until the 1930's. "The opera's distinctive absorbtion of African American oratory and music underpins its great individuality, including allusions to a wide range of black popular music from W.C. Handy to Cab Calloway; and black folk music, from street cries and children's ditties to, above all, the Negro spiritual, which informs not only many of the opera's songs and choruses but its recitatives as well."

Über quantentheoretische Umdeutung kinematischer und mechanischer Beziehungen.

First edition Berlin: Julius Springer, 1925. First Paper on Quantum Mechanics. A very fine copy (not ex-library) of his breakthrough paper, announcing his discovery of matrix mechanics. "A severe attack of hay fever in early June forced Heisenberg's retreat to the island of Helgoland. There he completed the calculation of the anharmonic oscillator, determined the constants of motion, and obtained from his multiplication rule the Thomas Kuhn summation rule for spectral lines. After nearly two weeks on Helgoland, Heisenberg returned to Göttingen, where he drafted his fundamental paper 'Über die quantentheoretische Umdeutung kinematischer und mechanischer Beziehungen', which he completed in July. In this paper Heisenberg proclaimed that the quantum mechanics of atoms should contain only relations between experimentally observable quantities. The resulting formalism served as the starting point for the new quantum mechanics, based, as Heisenberg's multiplication rule implied, on the manipulation of ordered sets of data forming a mathematical matrix." (DSB). In: Zeitschrift für Physik, Vol. 33, pp.879-893. The complete volume offered (VIII,950 pp.) in a nice contemporary half calf binding with gilt spine lettering. Completely clean throughout - a fine copy.

Six Drawings by E. H. Shepard Illustrating Poems from When We Were Very Young.

London: Methuen, (c. 1925). Folio. (6)ff. Copy number one of twenty copies signed and numbered by the author, A. A. Milne, and the illustrator, E. H. Shepard, in pencil. When We Were Very Young was Milne's first collaboration with Shepard, and the first of the four Christopher Robin books. Each of Milne's poems is printed in calligraphic script and surrounded by a border of several vignettes by Shepard. The six poems selected are "Teddy Bear," featuring the first appearance of Milne's most famous character, Winnie-the-Pooh, "Happiness," "Hoppity," "Vespers," "Lines and Squares," and "The Kings Breakfast." The broadsides are printed on Japan paper, mounted on mat board, and protected with tissue guards. On the reverse of each is a small label bearing the title and publisher's information. The poems are elegantly presented and intended for framing, and as a result, it is likely that many of these sets were broken up. The mounted broadsides range in size from 12 3/4 by 9 3/4 inches to 20 by 15 3/4 inches. Loose in a gray portfolio. Title labels for the set are mounted to the inside flap and inside back panel of the portfolio, and a slip with additional labels for each of the drawings, intended to be adhered to the back board of a picture frame, is also tipped in on the inside back panel. Short, closed tear to margin of one mat, not affecting the broadside, boards soiled, else a fine set of these rare broadsides.

A Map of New York which is Published by the Washington Square Bookshop. Here is a map to give you pleasure, a town reduced to your mantel's measure, city of gaiety, city of gold, your Bagdad on Hudson, three hundred years old....

New York. Washington Square Bookshop. 1925. Color pictographic / pictorial map, 30 1/2 x 38 inches, professionally mounted on linen. Folds (as issued) with infill at fold intersections, pinholes, a few tears (minimized by linen backing). Very good condition. A vibrant bird's eye view of New York City humorously designed by Joseph B. Platt, with Battery Park in the lower right corner and Grant's Tomb and the Polo Grounds in the upper left. The map is bordered by decorative text that reads "Here is a map to give you pleasure, a town reduced to your mantel's measure, city of gayety, city of gold, your Bagdad on Hudson, three hundred years old". This scarce map published to celebrate the tricentenary of the purchase of Manhattan by the Dutch ("Little Miss New York Born 1626" reads a banner flying from the small plane to the right of the central compass rose) is quite extraordinarily modernist in character. It employs some of the graphic features of the new style of "wonder map" developed by MacDonald Gill in his London Underground map posters of the early teens and twenties, notably the "speech balloons" with comic quips explicating the city history and contemporary character and also in its decorative border with text of civic pride. However in the almost abstract coloration of its startling color palette, it stands alone. Examples of the quips: "Is this map to be formal or informal?"; a couple looking at the Woolworth Building exclaim "Oh Boy! That's some stack of dimes." The map was printed by the Ritchey Litho Corp. WorldCat lists a single library holding for this map, at Brown University; another copy is located at the Norman B. Leventhal Map Center (Boston Public Library)....

Collection of Original Photographs of Alaska

Album comprising approximately 500 original photographs of various formats, the majority taken in and around the copper mining town of Kennecott, Alaska, during its heyday in the 1920s, including the Bonanza, Jumbo, and Erie mines, nearby towns such as Cordova, McCarthy, and Ruby, hunting and skiing trips, dogsledding, Eskimos, railroads, the Childs, Columbia, and Kennicott glaciers, and steamships, with 21 most likely unpublished photographs captioned "Mt Logan Alaska 1925 - June / Guided by Andy Taylor, Famous Alaskan Guide" being of particular interest, depicting the first successful expedition to the summit of Mt. Logan in the Yukon Territory, Canada's highest peak, with photographs showing the team setting up camp, loading their sleds, and trekking, together with several pieces of ephemera including a telegram, a Pacific Line steamship catalog, and a newspaper clipping. Original album disbound and trimmed to fit, with original album pages and hand-written captions intact, some original photo corners replaced. Small folio. Housed in two contemporary albums. N.p. (Kennecott, Alaska), circa 1920s. A geologist first approached the Alpine Club of Canada in 1922 with the idea of sending a team to summit Mt. Logan. A team of Canadian, British, and American climbers was assembled, and their trip was delayed from 1924 to 1925 due to delays in funding and preparation. They began their trip in early May, journeying from the Pacific coast by train, and then traversed the remaining 120 miles on foot to the Logan Glacier, where they established base camp. On June 23, 1925, the team of Albert H. MacCarthy, H.F. Lambart, Allen Carpé, W.W. Foster, Norman H. Read, and Andy Taylor became the first people to stand atop the summit of Mt. Logan. The Kennecott Mines were discovered around the turn of the century, and confirmed as the richest known concentration of copper in the world at the time in 1901. Five different mines turned out incredible amounts of copper, at their peak generating $32.4 million worth of ore in a single year. The highest grades of ore were largely depleted by the early 1930s, with the mines closing gradually. The last train left Kennecott on November 10, 1938, leaving it a ghost town. In the 1980's, the town became a tourist destination, and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986.
