Leon Trotsky
Berlin: First edition, offprint - previously appeared as the preface to the first volume of Trotsky's collected works in October 1924. Some scattered rubbing/staining to covers, otherwise a very good, sound copy in original wrappers. Two copies at Duke and Harvard and 3 others appearing at auction in the last 80 years**** Trotsky wrote this history of the struggle within the Bolshevik Party from February to October 1917 and linked it to the failure of the Soviet-inspired German Communist uprising of 1923. It was immediately denounced by Josef Stalin and his henchmen. (University of Glasgow). Houdini, Harry
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1924. Stated First Edition. B&W photos & illustrations, blue cloth, gilt lettering on cover & spine, corners bumped, minor edge wear, indexed. very good / no dust jacket. Item #5557932 The book was the result of many years of study by Houdini into the phenomena of Spiritualism: slate writing, spirit photography, manifestation, ectoplasm, etc. etc. from the time of the Fox sisters to the (then) present-day. His well-reasoned if somewhat blunt rejection of the claims of spiritualism were doubtless a factor in the decline of the movement, and also caused a rift between himself and the author and defender of spiritualism, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who until then had been a friend of Houdini's. Then we describe the paper quality from off-white to brown or brittle. For lower grade pulps in lots or regular magazines (which don't have the same paper quality problem) we don't usually describe the paper quality unless there is … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

EINSTEIN, ALBERT
Berlin: Akademie der Wissenschaften, 1924. First edition. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS OF THE FIRST PART OF ONE OF EINSTEIN'S GREAT CONTRIBUTIONS TO QUANTUM MECHANICS: THE DEVELOPMENT OF BOSE'S INSIGHTS TO CREATE "BOSE-EINSTEIN STATISTICS" AND "BOSE-EINSTEIN CONDENSATION". "Einstein made his own contribution [to quantum theory] when he received in June of that year [1924] a paper in English from a young physicist from India named Satyendra Nath Bose. It derived Planck's blackbody radiation law by treating radiation as if it were a cloud of gas and then applying a statistical method of analyzing it. But there was a twist: Bose said that any two photons that had the same energy state were absolutely indistinguishable, in theory as well as fact, and should not be treated separately in the statistical calculations. "Bose's creative use of statistical analysis was reminiscent of Einstein's youthful enthusiasm for that approach. He not only got Bose's paper published, he also extended it with three papers of his own. In them, he applied Bose's counting method, later called 'Bose-Einstein statistics,' to actual gas molecules, thus becoming the primary inventory of quantum-statistical mechanics. "Bose's paper dealt with photons, which have no mass. Einstein extended the idea by treating quantum particles with mass as being indistinguishable from one another for statistical purposes in certain cases... "The key insight, which Einstein extracted from Bose's initial paper, has to do with how you calculate the probabilities for each state of multiple quantum particles... When he … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

Old folds, some stains. Very good. Portraits near fine and fine. Reuter p. 195. Item #267615 Sherman Foote Denton (1856-1937), a Massachusetts native and the child of an abolitionist and a radical feminist, was an accomplished artist from his youth. He travelled the world, collecting and illustrating natural history specimens. Denton was adept at preserving specimens, especially butterflies and fish. He was author of As Nature Shows Them. Moths and Butterflies of the United States East of the Rocky Mountains (1900), and is most widely known now for his ichythological work, some of which appeared in the important series of annual reports of the New York State Fisheries, Game and Forest Commission, 1895-1905; and in publications of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The list of "West Coast fishes collected" includes a note "For a good many of the fishes I have neither a common nor a scientific name as yet S.F.D." The list of "Fishes of the East Coast" includes many of the species he illustrated. Both show signs of revisions and additions. The two portraits depict Sherman in early adulthood (by F.J. Williams, Natick, Mass.) and some years later (by Partridge Studios, Boston, Brookline). A choice group of material from a noted American illustrator.
