HERMANN HESSE
S. Fischer Verlag. Berlin. SEE PICS THAT FORM PART OF THE DESCRIPTION. SIDDHARTHA by Hermann Hesse - 1st/early 1923 German - S. Fischer Verlag Published by S. Fischer Verlag, Berlin 1923 Early 1923 printing (just one year after the 1st printing), however, the green dye atop the book would indicate a first edition thus. I have not found another following this description on the internet.THIS BOOK CERTAINLY MERITS FURTHER RESEARCH! German: 'siebente bis zehnte auflage alle rechte besonders das der ubersetzung vorbelhalten' translates: 'seventh to tenth edition all rights reserved, especially that of the translation' Straight and tight, book appears unread although pages are slightly 'browned' There is no underlining or writing in the book. Original cloth bookmark. The top edge of the book is coloured with a green dye. Some marks to front cover and back (see pics) Pencil inscription on front endpaper. The spine of the book has tape over it, which continues over the front and back covers (see pics). It looks as if the original spine may be (albeit in part) in tact underneath but I do not want to force it just in case. That would be a task for a professional book binder! Not an ex-library, not a book-club, no stamps, no stickers. some discoloring of paper as mentioned above. All images have been taken without flash on the camera so that all or any imperfections may be shown. PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A GERMAN LANGUAGE BOOK. An amazing copy of this book. scarce in this wonderful condition. Any questions...just ask! I am not a professional bookseller but I will do my best to answer any … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ponting and British Royalty
Hythe, Kent, 1923. Visitors book for guests of the Hythe Golf Club, founded in 1894, with 78 manuscript signatures penned on 10 leafs. 8vo. Full calf binding, with impressed heraldic seal to front, raised lettering "CCW The Links Hythe" also to front, five raised bands to spine, untrimmed leafs. Volume measures approximately 21 x 26,5 x 2,5 cm. Wear to boards, front bowed slightly, otherwise in very good condition, containing some notable signatures. Members of the British monarchy's household are featured in the volume, with signatures made on 8 August 1823, including Albert, Duke of York, (later King George VI). Sir Clement Anderson Montague-Barlow, 1st Baronet, who at the time was Minister of Labour and a member of the Privy Council, also signed on the same day, as well as six others. Having just been married in April, during the summer of 1923 Albert and Elizabeth, future King and Queen of the United Kingdom, were travelling a fair bit. They first settled into White Lodge, in Richmond Park. They were spotted at the Richmond Show, and shortly after that at the Hendon Air Show. They visited Holyrood House in Edinburgh in July. Their social life was beginning on a grand scale. At the end of the season, they went to stay at Molecomb and attended the races at Goodwood. The present volume reveals a little-known and rather private e … [Click Below for Full Description]

NEW YORK, 1923 Published by KOUCHAKJI FRERES Binding: HARD BACK BROWN Size: 15X19 200 Pages Overall Condition is: GOOD LEATHER SPINES EXTRA POSTAGE REQUIRED. Original black moroccan leather over gilt-stamped olive cloth, with gold lettering and tooling to leather spines. Top edge gilt. Decorative headpieces and initials. This set is unumbered limited edition of 1000, and was printed on uncut cotton rag paper, by Crane and Co. Foreword by famed art historian Josef Strzygowski. The book was designed and decorated by illustrator and graphic artist Edward B. Edwards. The publication is a comprehensive academic and photographic study of the Chalice of Antioch, including 60 highly detailed plates of b/w photogravure and copper plate engravings. The Chalice was said to be one of the contenders to be the authentic Holy Chalice of Christ, when it was discovered in Antioch, in 1910. Study of the object in the intervening years, has since ruled out this possibility. It is however, still considered one of the more acclaimed and earliest surviving Christian relics, dating from the early 5th century. Vol.1 has a detailed scholarly analysis of the Chalice from comparative historical, artistic, and technical perspectives, commenting on all aspects of the object. The end of the first volume contains 2 plates of diagrams, one is a dynamic analysis of the object's structure and the second is a visual study of the occulted spirals present in the faces on the Chalice. Vol.2 contains 60 plates of illustrations (some as large as 13.5 x 8.5 ), 48 of which are reproduced in photogravure after photogr … [Click Below for Full Description]

Churchill, Winston S
Thornton Butterfield 1923-31, London. First British editions of Churchill's important history of World War I. Octavo, six volumes, bound in full morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, gilt titles to the spine, raised bands. Illustrated throughout with maps and charts. In fine condition with errata slips in volumes I, III and V. His American biographer William Manchester wrote that: His masterpiece is The World Crisis, published over a period of several years, 1923 to 1931, a six-volume, 3,261-page account of the Great War, beginning with its origins in 1911 and ending with its repercussions in the 1920s. Magnificently written, it is enhanced by the presence of the author at the highest councils of war and in the trenches as a battalion commander. The British historian Robert Rhodes James wrote that: For all its pitfalls as history, The World Crisis must surely stand as Churchill’s masterpiece. As first lord of the admiralty and minister for war and air, Churchill stood resolute at the center of international affairs. In this classic account, he dramatically details how the tides of despair and triumph flowed and ebbed as the political and military leaders of the time navigated the dangerous currents of world conflict. Churchill vividly recounts the major campaigns that shaped the war: the furious attacks of the Marne, the naval maneuvers off Jutland, Verdun's "soul-stirring frenzy," and the surprising victory of Chemins des Dames. Here, too, he re-creates the dawn of modern warfare: the buzz of airplanes overhead, trench combat, artillery thunder, and the threat of chemical warfa … [Click Below for Full Description]

Curtis, Edward S.
Suffolk Engr. Co., Cambridge, Mass., 1923. Photogravure, 21.8 x 17.8 inches. § A beautiful image showing a Klamath man hunting from a dugout canoe, Plate 458 from Volume 13 (1923) of Curtis's The North American Indian. The Klamath people are from the inland region of Northern California and Southern Oregon. Their oral history records the volcanic eruption that created Crater Lake over 7000 years ago.The North American Indian remains one the most ambitious publishing projects and one of the most important works of ethnography of all time. J.P. Morgan provided the initial funding of $75,000 over five years but in the end Curtis worked for over 20 years to produce the 20 volume work. In that time he took over 40,000 photographs and made over 10,000 wax cylinder recordings to illustrate a detailed written record of the lives, languages, and beliefs of over 80 different tribes. The importance and the urgency of the task was clear to him, as he wrote in the introduction to his first volume in 1907, "The information that is to be gathered ... respecting the mode of life of one of the great races of mankind, must be collected at once or the opportunity will be lost.

Hi, This lot is a 1923 Original Hardback Wisden in Very Good Condition. I just purchased an 1923 and have been agonising which to keep and which to list on the site, it was 50/50 but decided to list the one I have had in my personnel collection for the last few years, it is very hard to fault but some minor niggles as stated below. This Wisden has bright gilt to front and spine , nice spine cloth, minimal board marks, there is a couple of light marks to the rear board. The reason I swapped it is because (and I know this is harsh) the yellow paste downs inside have a slight white aura to them, super spingly hinges to front and back and the pages are clean. Super photoplate. A lovely book. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Lofting, Hugh
New York: Frederick A. Stokes Company, 1923. First edition of the first book in the Doctor Dolittle series. Octavo, original cloth, illustrated endpapers, illustrated. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page, "To Alan Edward Block with the Author's Sincere regards H.L. New York Feb. 1921." In very good condition, with some small segment missing from the signature page. First editions are rare signed and inscribed. Author Hugh Lofting was "creator of the most famous vet of all time (pace James Herriot)--and what a wonderfully sane loony Dr. Dolittle is. The books are absolutely irresistible and deathless--as well as being immensely stylish... Very much collected, as is right and proper" (Connolly, Children's Modern First Editions, 189). Asked about the genesis of Doctor Dolittle, Lofting stated that he came up with the idea during World War I. He recalled: "It was during the Great War and my children at home wanted letters from me--and they wanted them with illustrations rather than without. There seemed to be very little of interest to write to youngsters from the Front: the news was either too horrible or too dull... One thing, however, that kept forcing itself more and more on my attention was the very considerable part the animals were playing in the World War" (Firsts). After being injured in the war, Lofting used his letters to compile a book. With the help of fellow writer Cecil Roberts, whom Lofting met on a trip home to the United States, Hugh Lofting secured publication at Frederick A. Stokes in New York. Soon after, he became one of the … [Click Below for Full Description]
