Seidmann-Freud, Tom
Berlin: Peregrin-Verlag, 1923. Near fine.. Original quarter tan cloth, color pictorial paper boards. 12 full-page color lithographs by Seidmann-Freud. Text in German. [28] pages. Faint soiling and marginal toning to boards. First edition of the the first children's book of the Peregrin Press, with Seidmann-Freud's modern, stylized color lithographs. Seidmann-Freud was Sigmund's niece, an innovator in writing and illustrating books for children in Germany. This was the first children's book of the Peregrin Press, founded by the artist and her husband, the journalist Jakob Seidmann, as part of the avant-garde crowd in 1920s Munich and Berlin. Seidmann-Freud's color lithographs bring to children's books concepts from Constructivism with a touch of the surreal - they deserve more recognition today, which is partially inhibited by her books' scarcity: they "disappeared from bookstores in about 1937 owing to the author's non-Aryan descent" (Hürlimann). A beautiful copy, and very scarce.

Maynard Dixon GREAT CONDITION! Beautiful Illus.!
1923. For sale is a very rare copy of Injun Babies by Maynard Dixon! This book is in excellent condition for its age! The binding is still good, The pages are clean and do not have dog earing or tears! As can be seen in the photos, there is some staining or discoloring to the outside cover (particularly on the side). Additionally, there is a previous owner's sticker inside the cover. There are seven illustrations ("plates"), 6 are pictured in this listing (the seventh is of a child shooting an arrow). From what I gathered searching online there may have originally been eight plates. There's some discoloring of pages that border these illustrations (see picture #8), a natural occurrence I imagine due to the different paper used for the illustration pages. I've tried my best to document the condition of this book, if you have any questions or would like to see more pictures of the book please do not hesitate to let me know! Check out my other books and sets for sale! THANK YOU!!!

Ginsberg, Allen, Schriftsteller (1926-1997).
An den Kunstsammler und Kunsthändler Carl Laszlo (1923-2013) in Basel über buddhistische Konzentrations- und Meditationspraktiken: "Thanks for your hospitality in Basel - Sorry I could'nt find in your collection a sample of the Samatha-Vipassana posture or meditation with palms down on knees - here's a block print of Marpa 'the Translator', teacher of Mila-repa in proper asana (seat) and mudra (hard posture). Details on his life can be found in biographies of Mila-repa [...]" Milarepa war ein tibetanischer Yogameister. Wharton, Edith
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1923. First edition. Very good plus in near-fine jacket.. Original red cloth, gilt-lettered front board and spine. In original unclipped ($2.00) color typographic dust jacket. Page 244.6 with "lips." [8], 426 pages. Book with faint soiling to rear board, spine a trifle toned, slight lean; foxing around flap folds and bottom margin of jacket, else remarkably bright with only shallow rubbing. First printing of Wharton's post-war novel, "the beginning of a revitalized and extraordinarily experimental late period" (Sensibar) in her career - in the scarce original dust jacket. A war novel focusing primarily "behind the lines," A SON AT THE FRONT follows the fortunes of an American expat artist reluctantly drawn into the conflict. Critic Judith L. Sensibar sees A SON AT THE FRONT engaging with "conventions of the Great War's masculinist literary canon" as found in the works of Wilfred Owen, Rupert Brooke, and Robert Nichols - and before Ernest Hemingway's own WWI hospital novel, A FAREWELL TO ARMS (1929). A remarkable World War I novel from one of the era's best American writers.

Fujita, Jun
Chicago: Covici-McGee Co, 1923. Very good.. Signed limited first edition of this poetry collection by the first Japanese-American photojournalist, one of 365 numbered copies signed by the author. Born in a village near Hiroshima, Japan, Fujita moved to Chicago at age 20, eventually becoming the first photojournalist for the CHICAGO EVENING POST. As a photographer, he recorded major events such as the St. Valentine's Day massacre, the 1919 race riots, and labor strikes. But he also became known for his portrait photography and worked as a silent film actor, coming into contact with Chicago gangsters like Al Capone, renowned intellectuals like Albert Einstein, literary peers like Carl Sandburg, and movie stars like Charlie Chaplain. During World War II, Fujita faced financial devastation as the government froze his assets, despite having lived in the States for over three decades.Frustrated that haiku by contemporary poets lacked an "essential Japanese quality," Fujita published this book only in this limited edition. It contains tanka, a traditional form of Japanese poetry similar to haiku but with more syllables, written in English and organized in a common Japanese order by season. The poems use nature themes - semantically loaded concepts in Japanese poetry - to ruminate on life as an immigrant, loneliness, and what it means to be an American. Wenying Xu notes that, while Sadakichi Hartmann included some tanka in DRIFTING FLOWERS OF THE SEA (1904), Fujita's publication was the first American tanka collection.

Timlin, William
London: George G. Harrap & Company, 1923. Fine in very good jacket.. First edition, in the original dust jacket, of this gorgeous outlier of the Golden Age of Illustration, a fantasy of interplanetary travel by South African architect William Timlin. An Old Man fulfills the dream of his youth, "sailing by way of the Moon, and the more friendly planets" on his way to the Shining City of Mars. The ship of the title, designed by the aged engineer but built by fairies, captures the tale's balance of science fiction and fantasy: one iconic plate depicts the ship, whose design hearkens back to the Age of Discovery, outrunning the magnificent flare of a meteor. The only work authored by Timlin, THE SHIP THAT SAILED TO MARS secured his reputation alongside prolific professional illustrators like Arthur Rackham, Edmund Dulac, and Kay Nielsen. A beautiful copy of a strikingly original space odyssey.

DIXON, MAYNARD
(San Francisco: Printed by Edwin & Robert Grabhorn and James McDonald), 1923. 4to, batik paper boards, leather spine label, gilt lettering, untrimmed. Frontis and six illustrations by Dixon. The only book by artist Maynard Dixon (1875-1946) published in his lifetime, a fine collaborative effort with the Grabhorn Press that combines his iconic art set in the West with his poetry about the West. The batik cloth and brown leather spine label is a latter issue binding by the Grabhorns, who were known to leave books in sheets and bind them as demand warranted - and often in a style that depended on materials at hand, which invariably differed from the earlier bindings, as is the case here. Edges a little worn; very good copy. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Coolidge, Calvin
Washington, D.C.: The White House, 1923. December 17, 1923, The White House - to Lew Wallace, Jr., (son of Lew Wallace, Union general in the American Civil War, governor of the New Mexico Territory and author of "Ben Hur")- "Dear Mr. Wallace, The growth of thrift and saving in this country promises well for our future. Only through sacrifice and hard work can we attain the cherished things in life. This means we must work and save. The progress of the United States Government Savings System, in giving to all our people an opportunity to invest in safe securities, is most worthy. By placing Treasury Savings Certyificates on sale in post offices, banks and trust companies, the Government has made available to everyone a security of unquestioned soundness. Their widespread sale makes for better citizenship, as each purchaser holds a stake in his Government. I believe, also, that the enlargement of a national Thrift movement will eventually stamp out the false and unsound practices of the swindler." A 25 line, roughly 225 word letter that in the last paragraph goes on to talk about the growth of this system that "will result in increased happiness for the individual, and in increased prosperity in general." A Fine letter, under glass in period original frame and acquired directly from descendants of the Wallace family, never before offered for sale. A superb association and a letter that speaks directly to Coolidge's sense of personal responsibility and frugality.. One Page. Fine. 8 1/2 " x 11".

Italy, 1923. Oblong octavo. Black cloth over paper boards measuring 7.5" x 5.5" with "photographs" stamped in gilt on the front cover. A collection of 93 sepia toned gelatin silver photographs measuring around 3" x 4" with captions. Album is near fine with near fine or better photographs. A photo album kept by a woman while traveling in Europe in 1910. The album shows a group of well-to-do women in a tour group around Europe, beginning with their ocean liner trip overseas in September of 1910 on the S.S. Oceania, Italian Line. They started in Naples, went on a "drive" in a horse and carriage, visited the National Museum, and the volcano, Solfatara. They followed this with a trip to Pompeii with photos of well-dressed women walking through the ancient ruins of the city, complete with fancy hats and the occasional parasol. The company eventually traveled to Rome and Venice with photos of the women in gondolas and posing in Saint Mark's square. Continuing on their excursion they visited Paris, Germany, and Switzerland. The photos include a carriage ride to Versailles, the ruins of Heidelberg Castle, and wonderful views of the Alps. On the return trip they stopped in England and watched the guards at St. James' Palace. The final section of photographs is from travels in the United States between 1922 and 1924 as well as a few family snapshots. They include a car journey to the Berkshires, visiting the Hotel Aspinwall in Lenox, Masschusettes, and a zoo in Chevy Chase, Maryland. The photos show women posing around their car, taking silly candid photos, and lounging on rocks and t … [Click Below for Full Description]

Grey, Zane
[N.p.], 1923. 71,17pp. written in purple ink on the rectos of ruled paper, 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches (last dozen leaves in pencil); with corrections in the author's hand and in pencil in the hand of his wife, Dolly. With envelope, docketed in pencil: "Tonto Bear Original MS." First leaf with blind stamp of Zane Grey. Minor edge wear. Near fine. In a cloth chemise and half morocco and cloth slipcase, spine gilt. Zane Grey's stirring account of a bear hunting expedition into the Tonto Basin country of Arizona, the setting of a large portion of TALES OF LONELY TRAILS, which had been published the preceding year. This story was published in the March 1, 1924 issue of COUNTRY GENTLEMAN magazine. The text begins, "After three weeks of hard riding over the sage uplands of Utah and the wind-carved rock wilderness and red canyons characteristic of that vast desert country, what strange relief and delight to come again into the Tonto Basin, with its endless rolling green forest-land, its golden crags, its murmuring streams and purple ranges!" The manuscript shows many corrections and cross-outs, demonstrating Grey's writing and revision methods. The final seventeen-page section is designated as chapter four, which appears to be incomplete. Grey knew Arizona well, he built a lodge in the Tonto Basin in 1920 and returned there frequently to hunt, especially bears (an annual occurrence). He often had conflicting feelings toward the state, complaining that it was being overrun by tourists, and resenting that local authorities would not let him hunt out of season.

Hi, This lot is a 1923 Original Hardback Wisden in Very Good Condition. I just purchased an 1923 and have been agonising which to keep and which to list on the site, it was 50/50 but decided to list the one I have had in my personnel collection for the last few years, it is very hard to fault but some minor niggles as stated below. This Wisden has bright gilt to front and spine , nice spine cloth, minimal board marks, there is a couple of light marks to the rear board. The reason I swapped it is because (and I know this is harsh) the yellow paste downs inside have a slight white aura to them, super spingly hinges to front and back and the pages are clean. Super photoplate. A lovely book. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

ALLEN, Albert Arthur
1923. Quarto. 40pp. Stringbound textured paper wrappers. Moderate wear to the extremities with some waviness to the pages and some photos lifting at the corners but all still firmly secured, very good. This portfolio was sold to subscribers by Allen from his Arthur Allen Studios during the Teens and Twenties and contains more than 40 pages of original nude photographic prints pasted onto stiff pages. Each sheet has between two to four different images; many showing four separate poses of the same model. The final three pages include 22 additional nudes tipped in after publication, some photos and some from postcards, possibly issued blank for the buyer to customize. The first page also includes a tipped-in title page and a bound-in brochure announcing this particular series (along with a pencil note, "Received 19 Ap 1923") and predicting: "We are entering a period of nudity." Allen (1886-1962) was a pioneer in nude photography who was unusual in that his models displayed certain regions of the female form not documented by other photographers of the time. Allen claimed this was not for salacious reasons, but rather his earnest attempt to display the entirety of nude figure for artistic and "democratic" ideals. He explained in his biography, "To see womankind entirely nude would place all women on equality. And it would be only their true mental and physical charm that would lift them from the ordinary." Allen was arrested and indicted on several occasions during the 1920s for distributing obscene material but continued undaunted. He further pushed the boundaries with a port … [Click Below for Full Description]
