      Salle Bullier, Paris: L'Union des Artistes Russ, February 23,, 1923. Folio. Original tan wrappers printed in blue. Tipped-in plate and illustrations throughout. Wrappers tanned, chipped, creased, and separated from contents, dark spots to upper wrapper, creasing to corners of contents. Very good condition. The rare programme for the Grand Bal des Artistes, "a philanthropic venture for the Union des Artistes Russes, a society that brought together many of the Russian émigré painters and critics such as Victor Bart, Sonia Delauney, Serge Romoff, Léopold Survage, and Zdanevich. Goncharova and Larionov designed much of the publicity material including the programe, the flyer, and the ticket… They also invited Russian and French colleagues… including Bart, Albert Gleizes, Juan Gris, Ferdinand Léger, Pablo Picasso, and Survage – to sponsor and design forty loges which were then sold in aid of the Union" (Bowlt, Faces Painted with Fanciful Patterns, in USSR 5/6). The programme itself includes two illustrations by Picasso, as well as images by Gris, Derain, and Gontcharova, and facsimile poems by numerous authors. The Union organised a number of artists' balls in the early 1920s, but this was by far "the most ambitious… The program included four dance bands and two bars serving 'pommes frites anglaise et cocktails' and the dancing was supplemented by all kinds of happenings" (Bowlt). A fantastic and ephemeral publication.

Schiffrin and illustrated by Vasily Shukhaev, with a suite of illustrations in color on Japon and a suite in black on Chine. Entire edition: 345 copies; 25 on Japon with two suites, as ours; 35 on Japon without suites; 260 on Velin filigrane; 25 hors commerce on Velin). Two volumes. Quarto (7? x 9?). Wrappers. Text in original glassine. 91pp., with 21 illustrations in color, including seven full-page and fourteen in text. Board folder with two suites of the plates (one in color and one in black). Introduction by André Gide. Printed using the ?pochoir? process on March 15, 1923 on the presses of G. Kadar in Paris. Fine copy. The illustrations are done by the Russian ?neo-Romantic? artist Vasily Ivanovich Shukhaev (1887-1973). (His works were signed Vassili Choukhaeff from 1921-35.) A portraitist, stage designer, book illustrator, and muralist, Shukhaev is now remembered primarily as a superb draftsman. Shukhaev was a member of the influential group of artists and intellectuals ?Mir iskusstva? [World of Art] (1898-1903; 1911-1927) from 1917. During this period, the group admitted avant-garde artists that included the Bubnovy Valet (Jack of Diamonds group) with their interest in French art. The miriskusniki (members of the movement) turned away from contemporary art and gravitated toward folk themes and even the 18th-century rococo drawings of Watteau. Although closely associated with Russian avant-garde painters, Shukhaev ?lived and worked outside the confines of the avant-garde, and consciously or unconsciously, fought against its extremism. Jacovleff and Shukhaev, for example, never betrayed their allegiance to the canons of the Italian Renaissance? (Bowlt, et al., 247-8). After studying in Italy, Shukhaev moved to Finland, then to southern France, and then to Paris in 1921, where he stayed for 14 years. As a ?Russes francisés,? he was part of the early Russian immigration to Paris after the Revolution, allying himself with artists such as Alexandre Benois, Ivan Bilibin, Dimitri Bouch?ne, and others. ?[His] endeavor to maintain the elegance and measured taste of the World of Art is clear from his pochoir illustrations to the deluxe editions of Alexander Pushkin?s Boris Godunov and Queen of Spades? (Bowlt, et al. II, 372). In addition to book illustrations, Shukhaev did important work in the theatre for Balieff?s Chauve-Souris (he was a close friend of the impresario Baileff) and for Ida Rubinstein?s Sémiramis at Opera de Paris (1934). He also influenced American artist John Steuart Curry (1897-1946) who began painting during a visit to Paris for several months in 1926-27 where he studied at Shukhaev?s drawing academy. In 1935, Shukhaev returned to the USSR and, in the spring of 1937, he was sentenced on a charge of espionage to nine years at a correctional labor camp. He was discharged in 1945. From 1947, he lived in Tbilisi, Georgia where he taught until retirement.* The translator and publisher Jacques Schiffrin (1892-1950) founded Éditions de la Pléiade in 1922. La Dame de Pique was his first book. Later, he expanded the name to the Biblioth?que de la Pléiade, a publishing project founded to provide the public with reference editions of the complete works of classic European authors in a pocket format. Biblioth?que de la Pléiade was integrated into Gallimard in 1936 and is still published today. Gallimard and Einaudi began a similar series of literature in Italian, the Biblioteca della Pléiade. The Library of America series, launched in 1979, is a similar project in the United States inspired by the Biblioth?que de la Pléiade. Schiffrin was born in Baku, Azerbaijan in 1892. Raised in comfortable circumstances due to a petrochemical business established by his grandfather with the assistance of Alfred Nobel, he was educated in Switzerland and in Florence. Schiffrin became secretary to the art historian Bernard Berenson and later served as a Russian language tutor to Peggy Guggenheim. His family assets were nationalized after the Russian revolution. In A Political Education, his son André tells the story of Jacques winning enough money at the tables of Monte-Carlo to support himself for several years. After a short-lived marriage to pianist Youra Guller, he went to Paris in 1921 where he became an apprentice to the art-book publisher Henri Piazza. Jacques decided to create a publishing house for the publication of Russian literary classics translated into French. ?It was at the very beginning of the Éditions de la Pléiade that my father [in 1922] got in touch with André Gide, whose help he sought in translating what would be his first book, Pushkin?s The Queen of Spades. The books [of the first years] were lavishly illustrated, some by Russian artists living in Paris, and they had stunning typography, which my father had himself designed? (Schiffrin, 24). Jacques had a long and important friendship and collaboration with André Gide: ?They had met in Paris in 1922, shortly after my father?s arrival and his decision to launch his original series of Russian classics with Pushkin?s The Queen of Spades. As was common at the time, my father had been taught French from the earliest days of his Russian childhood, and so he decided to translate the book himself. Nonetheless, he also decided to seek someone to help him check and improve his translation, and out of the blue, he wrote to Gide, who was already very famous? (Schiffrin, 70). Schiffrin, who was Jewish, managed to get his family out of Nazi-occupied France and into the United States because of the work of the American diplomat Varian Fry**. In 1942, Schriffin joined Pantheon Books in New York with the intention of publishing works that were less commercially successful, but intellectually important. *Shaukhaev was the subject of a retrospective exhibition and symposium at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art in 2014. ? In Marseille, Fry's network of accomplices forged documents and created clandestine escape routes. He offered aid to antifascist refugees, both Jews and non-Jews, threatened with extradition to Nazi Germany under Article 19 of the Franco-German armistice (the "Surrender on Demand" clause). Fry remained in France for 13 months. He was under constant surveillance, and was questioned and detained by authorities more than once. He established a legal French relief organization, The American Relief Center. Fry's efforts resulted in the rescue of some 2,000 persons, including such distinguished artists and intellectuals as Marc Chagall, Max Ernst, Franz Werfel, Lion Feuchtwanger, and Heinrich Mann. His covert activities angered officials of both the US State Department and Vichy France, and in September 1941, he was expelled from France. Abraham Horodisch, the renown antiquarian bookseller, noted "The typographical design of the book is exquisite......Of all the illustrated editions of the `Ballad', the Masereel edition seems to me to have the highest importance,,,,,,,,Surely there can be few who will remain unmoved by their suggestive power." Richly bound in full dark brown morocco by Zaehnsdorf (with their extra gilt signet on the rear pastedown), raised bands, elaborately gilt side panels within blindstamped rules, t.e.g., others untrimmed. A few trivial rubs to joints, spine a trace sunned, otherwise about fine. First edition in this format, deluxe issue, published as an element in the "Player's Shakespeare," edited and introduced by Harley- Granville Barker. This volume includes color collotype plates by Thomas Lowinsky and line blocks by Emery Walker. This is one of one hundred numbered deluxe copies printed on Batchelor's Kelmscott handmade paper, specially bound, and signed by Lowinsky, Albert Rutherston (the series art editor) and Barker. Zaehnsdorf bound the one hundred copies in one of two fashions, in morocco, gilt extra, as here, and in gilt vellum.

The recipients, Allan and Claudine Wade was an actor, director, bibliophile and founder of The Phoenix Society. In excellent condition. Joseph Conrad was a Polish-British writer regarded as one of the greatest novelists to write in the English language. He joined the British merchant marine in 1878, and was granted British nationality in 1886. Though he did not speak English fluently until he was in his twenties, he was a master prose stylist who brought a non-English sensibility into English literature. Conrad is considered an early modernist, though his works still contain elements of 19th-century realism. "His narrative style and anti-heroic characters have influenced many authors, including T. S. Eliot, William Faulkner, Graham Greene, and Salman Rushdie" (John Stape, The Many Lives of Joseph Conrad).

      Harcourt Brace, 1923. Hardcover. Very Good. A first edition, first printing published by Harcourt Brace and Co. in 1923. Lacking the dust wrapper. Signed and dated in the year of publication by Virginia Woolf ('Virginia Woolf / Oct. 1923'). The book is very good+ and has a little light soiling to the top edge, some modest spotting to the boards, with a thin and low diagonal bump across the rear board, with some light pushing to the spine ends. There is a some light wear to the label's edges and a short marginal tear to the first page of text (not affecting the text). The book itself has an excellent provenance, having come from the estate of the noted actor Douglas Fairbanks, whose bookplate is found on the front pastedown. Woolf's third novel, which describes Jacob Flanders' life story from childhood through his adulthood until his death in World War I. Only one of 1500 copies printed. Exceptionally rare signed and especially so in the year of publication.

Volume III with some glue repair to front inner hinge. A bit of foxing and toning to text leaves and edges, but not affecting plates. Overall a very good copy with the gilt still very bright. "This narrative of the discovery of the tomb of Tut-ankh-Amen is merely preliminary: a final record of purely scientific nature will take some time, nor can it be adequately made until the work of investigation of the tomb and its vast material has been completed. Nevertheless, in view of the public interest in our discovery, we felt that some account without the loss of time, no matter how summary, was necessary, and that is the reason for the publication of this book. We have here for the first time, a royal burial very little disturbed in spite of that hurried plundering it has suffered at the hands of the ancient tomb-robbers, and within the shrines of the tomb-chamber I believe the Pharaoh lies intact, in all his royal magnificence."
