        Novels of the Sisters Bronte

LondonEdinburgh: John Grant, 1924. The Thornton Edition. beautifully bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe in full blue smooth calf decoratively ruled in blind and gilt, spine with extra gilt, two maroon morocco gilt lettered labels, top edges gilt, silk bookmark bound in, marbled endpapers. Spine a little faded, slight rubbing at spine heels, else fine. Quarto. Twelve volumes, complete Frontispiece illustration in each volume Some volumes have a preface or introudction by Charlotte Bronte The titles are: Anne Bronter: Agnes Grey, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall Emily Bronte: Wuthering Heights Charlotte Bronte: Jane Eyre, Villette, Shirley, The Professor Mrs. Gaskel: Life of Charlotte Bronte Charlotte Bronte (1816-1855)  and her sisters Emily Bronte (1818-1848) and Anne Bronte (1820-1849) have charmed, inspired, and even shocked readers from the Victorian age to the present.  Raised in Haworth, Yorkshire, the three sisters produced such classics as Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall.  Influenced by British Romantic poets like Wordsworth, Scott, and Byron, the Brontes produced a cast of unforgettable characters such as the devoted governess, Jane Eyre, and the lovers, Heathcliff, Cathy, and Hareton.  The Bronte Family website explores the lives, literature, and art of these important Victorian women writers. The Brontës are the world's most famous literary family and Haworth Parsonage, now the Brontë Parsonage Museum, was their home from 1820 to 1861.  Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë were the authors of some of the best-loved books in the English language. Charlotte's novel 'Jane Eyre' (1847), Emily's 'Wuthering Heights' (1847), and Anne's 'The Tenant of Wildfell Hall' (1848) were written in this house over a hundred and fifty years ago, yet their power still moves readers today. To find two writers of genius in one family would be rare, but to find several writers in one household is unique in the history of literature. Charlotte and Emily are ranked among the world's greatest novelists; Anne is a powerful underrated author, and both their father, the Revd. Patrick Brontë, and brother Branwell also saw their own works in print. The Brontës, published under the pseudonyms of Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell, were acknowledged at the time for their directness and powerful emotional energy, qualities which were sometimes interpreted by the critics as 'coarse' and 'brutal'. - Bronte Society.

Ford's tetralogy set during WWI, mainly in England and on the western front, where Ford himself served as an officer in the Welch Regiment. John N. Gray hailed the 'Parade's End' tetralogy as 'possibly the greatest 20th-century novel in English' and Mary Gordon labeled it as 'quite simply, the best fictional treatment of war in the history of the novel.' The basis for the highly acclaimed 2012 BBC / HBO mini-series starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Rebecca Hall. A remarkable set - I can find no auction records for a set with such attributes in the last 20 years. Highly collectible. More images available on request.

Zapiski poeta. Povest? [Aufzeichnungen eines Dichters. Erzählung].

Original-Ausgabe. - Kat. Sprengel Museum 218. - Bowlt/Hernad 73. - Kat. MoMa 750. - Andel, Avantgarde Pagedesign 252.

Plates as in "Eccentric Tales" from the German of W. F. Von Kosewitz, with Illustrations by Geo. Cruikshank, from (Sketches) by Alfred Crowquill (London: James Robins & Co. 1827)

None Stated: None stated, nd. Hardcover. Ex-library copy with usual marks. Plates mostly clean, but a few have minor-to-mild foxing. Two plates have perforation stamps on lower margins, not affecting plate images. Front end pages (ffep detached and laid in) contain 2 library plates, 2 personal book plates, and one additional plate. Some wear to spine, mostly at head/tail, and to leather corners, but nothing terribly offensive. Ex-lib. sticker on back cover.. Dark green 3/4 leather with complementary medium green cloth. Gilt edging, lettering and 3 bands (not raised). AEG. No text. 20 pp, each with an individual bw etching / engraving. With bookplates by prominent people. The title page is hand-lettered, and there is no printed publication information. This is a unique and important item of Cruikshankiana. Ex-library copy with minimally offensive marks, given the importance of each one. This volume contains ONLY the 20 engravings used as illustrations for Eccentric Tales. The original sketches were by Alfred Henry Forrester (under the pseudonym of Alfred Crowquill). The actual book illustrations then were done by George Cruikshank. This particular book contains Forrester's personal book plate. Another book plate is of Albert M. Cohn who wrote a catalogue raisonne of Cruikshank's works in 1924 (a small label on the fep makes reference to this catalogue, #471). And a third book plate is of William Hartman Woodin, Secretary of the Treasury under Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933. The final bookplate present is that of the Brooklyn Public Library. Plates No. 8 and 15 have remarques. The Cruikshank illustrations in Eccentric Tales were, apparently, hand-tinted, but these images are in b/w with no tinting, and appear to be etching proofs for the final illustrations. Both Crowquill's and Cruikshank's names appear under each etching. Delightful and humorous illustrations done in great detail. Unique and rare.

[Photo album]: Young Woman's College Album from 1924 to 1930 in Ypsilanti, Michigan Featuring a Photograph of Mary Pickford

Ypsilanti, Michigan / Virginia / California. 1924-1930. Oblong octavo measuring 8" x 6". 59pp. String-tied black leather over stiff paper boards. Contains 218 gelatin silver black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 2.5" x 1.5" and 4.5" x 2.75" with captions, with additional ephemera from 1924 to 1930. Tears and chips with some pages detached but present thus very good with near fine photographs with tiny tears and creases. The photo album contains a plethora of photographs featuring Esther Davis and her adventures. Most pictures are of the three Davis daughters; Alice, Rachel, and Esther either posed or candid shots with their friends taken at Michigan State Normal College in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Esther Davis is seen dancing and smiling with all her glee club members, standing outside wearing fancy clothing or costumes, and graduating high school and college. Esther Davis lived in the Bessie Leach Priddy House, a sorority, at Michigan State Normal College. While most of the pictures are from Michigan, some are labeled from places in Virginia and California. Two of which feature photos of Mary Pickford on the set of Little Annie Rooney which was being filmed in West Hollywood, California. Pickford was 33 at the time of filming but played a spry and determined young Irish girl. The movie became one of the highest grossing films of 1925. Pickford is seen smiling with the cast in one photo and then posing in the other. Both photos are fine with "Mary Pickford in 'Annie Roonie," written on the bottom edge. An interesting collection of photographs from a young woman during 1924 to 1930 documenting her adventures with friends and family, completing her education, and her encounter with Mary Pickford. .

First edition, first impression. Presentation copy, inscribed by the illustrator on the front free endpaper, "To Aunt Fanny, with love from Ernest, Xmas 1924". Shepard was very close to his aunts; his mother had died when he was ten, after which his aunts helped to raise him, taking him and his siblings on many trips. Shepard described Fanny as "the energetic one" and "chief organiser" of the family in his autobiography Drawn From Memory (1957), recalling fondly a story of her visit to the Jubilee illuminations, "in spite of Aunt Alicia's protests and warnings". This copy has been in the family by descent since the presentation. When We Were Very Young is the first and the scarcest of the four Pooh books with an initial print run of 5,175 regular trade copies. It was first published in London on 6 November 1924 to immense acclaim, and the first printing sold out in one day. By the end of the year more than 53,000 copies had been printed of what The Times called "the greatest children's book since Alice" (Thwaite p. 286). This copy is in the second state of the first impression, with the page number ix present in the preliminaries. In copies of the first state the contents leaf (ix-x) is unnumbered.

Zur Theorie der Radiometerkräfte [Theory of Radiometer Forces, Einstein, pp. 1-6] WITH Wärmegleichgewicht im Strahlungsfeld bei Anwesenheit von Materie [Thermal Equilibrium in the Radiation Field in the Presence of Matter, Bose, pp. 384-394] WITH "Zur Quantentheorie des Röntgenbremsspektr ums" [On the Quantum Theory of the X-ray Spectrum, Wentzel, pp. 257-284] in Zeitschrift für Physik 27, 1924

Vieweg und Springer, Berlin 1924 - BOUND FIRST EDITION OF EINSTEIN'S 1924 PAPER ON THE PHYSICS OF RADIOMETERS; EINSTEIN'S TRANSLATION OF BOSE'S SECOND PAPER ON THE BOSE-EINSTEIN CONDENSATE (WITH UNTITLED ADDENDUM BY EINSTEIN); & WENTZEL'S SECOND PROPHETIC PAPER ANTICIPATING FEYNMAN'S PATH INTEGRAL APPROACH TO QUANTUM MECHANICS. This volume bears the ownership stamp of Friedrich Hermann Hund, a physicist well-known for his work on atoms and molecules. The Einstein authored paper, Zur Theorie der Radiometerkräfte [On the Theory of Radiometric Forces] presents Einstein's theory on the cause of radiometric forces (the physics of radiometers). His paper finds that radiometric forces act also on surfaces normal to the temperature gradient, in other words, also on horizontal surfaces. Weil 139, 143a. ALSO INCLUDED: "Zur Quantentheorie des Röntgenbremsspektr ums" by Gregor Wentzel. "Unbeknownst to Feynmann, Wiener, or Dirac, Wentzel had anticipated several of the most important features of the path integral formulation in two 1924 papers resolving differences between classical wave interference and the quantum nature of spectral lines. Published even before Heisenberg's quantum mechanics formulation, these papers included concepts such as the interpretation of a virtual path as a phase, the interference of phase paths, and the interpretation of the magnitude of the interference as a transition probability" (History of Science: The Wenner Collection, 372). Wentzel's vision was not vague, and he provides "a precise mathematical structure that closely matches Feynman's later findings" (Antoci, Wentzel's Path Integrals, 1). ALSO INCLUDED: "Wärmegleichgewicht im Strahlungsfeld bei Anwesenheit von Materie" is Einstein's translation of Bose's second paper on the Bose-Einstein Condensate. Bose's first paper, "Plancks Gesetz und Lichtquantenhypothese" was a seminal paper in the history of quantum mechanics (and one which Einstein also translated for Bose). Planck's Law and Light Quantum Hypothesis represented the "discovery of new statistical counting rules for light quanta and a new derivation of Planck's radiation law. This second Bose paper specifically addresses the emission/absorption of electromagnetic radiation by matter. Einstein added an untitled addendum that he did not yet completely agree with the author's findings. CONDITION & DETAILS: Berlin: Vieweg und Springer. Large 8vo. (9 x 6 inches; 225 x 150mm). Ex-libris bearing two small institutional stamps on the rear of the title page as well as an envelope slot on the rear pastedown. Bears the ownership stamp (on ffp) of Friedrich Hermann Hund, a physicist well-known for his work on atoms and molecules. Hund "was a German physicist from Karlsruhe known for his work on atoms and molecules. Hund worked with such prestigious physicists as Schrödinger, Dirac, Heisenberg, Max Born, and Walter Bothe. He published more than 250 papers and essays in total. Hund made pivotal contributions to quantum theory - especially concerning the structure of the atom and of molecular spectra" (Wikipedia). Very slight ghosting at the spine from the removal of a spine label. Regardless, a handsome volume solidly and tightly bound in black cloth over marbled paper boards; slight rubbing at the edges. Bright and very clean throughout. Very good condition. [Attributes: First Edition]
