Zur Theorie der Radiometerkräfte [Theory of Radiometer Forces, Einstein, pp. 1-6] WITH Wärmegleichgewicht im Strahlungsfeld bei Anwesenheit von Materie [Thermal Equilibrium in the Radiation Field in the Presence of Matter, Bose, pp. 384-394] WITH "Zur Quantentheorie des Röntgenbremsspektr ums" [On the Quantum Theory of the X-ray Spectrum, Wentzel, pp. 257-284] in Zeitschrift für Physik 27, 1924

BOUND FIRST EDITION OF EINSTEIN'S 1924 PAPER ON THE PHYSICS OF RADIOMETERS; EINSTEIN'S TRANSLATION OF BOSE'S SECOND PAPER ON THE BOSE-EINSTEIN CONDENSATE (WITH UNTITLED ADDENDUM BY EINSTEIN); & WENTZEL'S SECOND PROPHETIC PAPER ANTICIPATING FEYNMAN'S PATH INTEGRAL APPROACH TO QUANTUM MECHANICS. This volume bears the ownership stamp of Friedrich Hermann Hund, a physicist well-known for his work on atoms and molecules. The Einstein authored paper, Zur Theorie der Radiometerkräfte [On the Theory of Radiometric Forces] presents Einstein's theory on the cause of radiometric forces (the physics of radiometers). His paper finds that radiometric forces act also on surfaces normal to the temperature gradient, in other words, also on horizontal surfaces. Weil 139, 143a. ALSO INCLUDED: "Zur Quantentheorie des Röntgenbremsspektr ums" by Gregor Wentzel. "Unbeknownst to Feynmann, Wiener, or Dirac, Wentzel had anticipated several of the most important features of the path integral formulation in two 1924 papers resolving differences between classical wave interference and the quantum nature of spectral lines. Published even before Heisenberg's quantum mechanics formulation, these papers included concepts such as the interpretation of a virtual path as a phase, the interference of phase paths, and the interpretation of the magnitude of the interference as a transition probability" (History of Science: The Wenner Collection, 372). Wentzel's vision was not vague, and he provides "a precise mathematical structure that closely matches Feynman's later findings" (Antoci, Wentzel's Path Integrals, 1). ALSO INCLUDED: "Wärmegleichgewicht im Strahlungsfeld bei Anwesenheit von Materie" is Einstein's translation of Bose's second paper on the Bose-Einstein Condensate. Bose's first paper, "Plancks Gesetz und Lichtquantenhypothese" was a seminal paper in the history of quantum mechanics (and one which Einstein also translated for Bose). Planck's Law and Light Quantum Hypothesis represented the "discovery of new statistical counting rules for light quanta and a new derivation of Planck's radiation law. This second Bose paper specifically addresses the emission/absorption of electromagnetic radiation by matter. Einstein added an untitled addendum that he did not yet completely agree with the author's findings. CONDITION & DETAILS: Berlin: Vieweg und Springer. Large 8vo. (9 x 6 inches; 225 x 150mm). Ex-libris bearing two small institutional stamps on the rear of the title page as well as an envelope slot on the rear pastedown. Bears the ownership stamp (on ffp) of Friedrich Hermann Hund, a physicist well-known for his work on atoms and molecules. Hund "was a German physicist from Karlsruhe known for his work on atoms and molecules. Hund worked with such prestigious physicists as Schrödinger, Dirac, Heisenberg, Max Born, and Walter Bothe. He published more than 250 papers and essays in total. Hund made pivotal contributions to quantum theory - especially concerning the structure of the atom and of molecular spectra" (Wikipedia). Very slight ghosting at the spine from the removal of a spine label. Regardless, a handsome volume solidly and tightly bound in black cloth over marbled paper boards; slight rubbing at the edges. Bright and very clean throughout. Very good condition.

A little rubbing to spine ends, offsetting to endpapers, contemporary (17 June 1924) pencilled ownership signature to ffep, a very good copy in a very good first issue dustwrapper, with chipping with loss to spine ends affecting text, and one chip to top edge of front panel affecting U of 'Ukridge'.         When We Were Very Young.

London: Methuen & Co. Ltd.,, 1924. With decorations by Ernest H. Shepard. Octavo, ( 190 x 127 mm). Finely bound by the Chelsea Bindery in dark blue morocco, titles and decoration to spine, raised bands, single rule to boards with pictorial motifs, twin rule to turn-ins, floral endpapers, gilt edges. With black and white illustrations. An excellent copy. First edition, first impression. The first and the scarcest of the four Pooh books with an initial print run of 5,175 regular trade copies. Milne had no particular ambition to write for children, but in 1922 a glimpse of his two-year-old son Christopher being taught to pray by his nanny inspired him to compose the verse "Vespers", a gently ironic take on the innocence of childhood intended for an adult readership, which was published in Vanity Fair in January 1923. It proved popular, and Milne was asked to contribute to The Merry-Go-Round, a new periodical for children. The success of these pieces led him to consider writing further verses for children, and he composed most of When We Were Very Young as entertainment during a dreary holiday in Wales. Many of the poems first ran as weekly instalments in Punch, charmingly illustrated by fellow contributor Shepard. When We Were Very Young was first published in London on 6 November 1924 to immense acclaim, and the first printing sold out in one day. By the end of the year more than 53,000 copies had been printed of what The Times called "the greatest children's book since Alice" (Thwaite p. 286).

't Schat der zielen, dat is: Het geheele leven ons Heeren Jesu Christi naer de vyer Evangelisten. Naer vervolgh des tijdts by een ghevoeght, in seven stucken verdeelt. P[aets], 1648. With 686 woodcuts, many full-page, by Christoph van Sichem (many with his monogram), after his own designs and after drawings and paintings by Aldegrever, Goltzius, Dürer, Bloemaert, the Wierix brothers, Lucas van Leyden, Maarten van Heemskerck, Joannes Stradanus, etc. 17th-century vellum, manuscript title on smooth spine.

Hollstein XXVII, p. 51 (no. 52); Poortman, Bijbel en Prent 48; STCN (8 copies, incl. at least 2 incomplete); cf. Het Boek XIII (1924), pp. 195 ff. First and only edition of a Catholic devotional book on the life of Christ (in 5 numbered parts), the works of the Apostles, saints' lives, and religious emblems, perhaps the most richly illustrated woodcut book of the 17th century, with almost 700 woodcuts by Van Sichem, when one includes the 7 large ornamental woodcuts with putti, beasts, insects and flowers. Van Sichem may also have cut the numerous woodcut decorated initials with biblical figures, appearing mostly in the works of the Apostles. The book's title may have been influenced by an otherwise unrelated work published in the previous year, Den schat der zielen , an unillustrated translation of a work apparently first written in Catalan by Miguel Comalada, which saw later editions as well. The present work is built entirely around Van Sichem's extraordinary woodcuts. Christoffel van Sichem (ca. 1581-1658), the second and most important of four artists of that name, was one of the greatest woodblock cutters of the Dutch golden age. With owner's signature on endleaf. With the outer edge of the woodcut on the "Bosch der eremyten" title-page slightly shaved, a few mostly marginal tears, the largest in the gutter margin of 1 leaf repaired, slightly affecting the border, and a smaller one slightly affecting 1 woodcut, and a few leaves somewhat thumbed, smudged or spotted, but still generally in good condition. A famous and popular Catholic devotional work, with nearly 700 Van Sichem woodcuts.

        HENRY JAMES AT WORK

1924. [inscribed by Bosanquet] London: Printed and published by Leonard and Virginia Woolf at The Hogarth Press, 1924. Original cream wrappers printed in green. First Edition, being No. 3 in (the first series of) "The Hogarth Essays" -- and which is in fact, "the only book in the Hogarth Essays series to be hand-printed by the Woolfs" [Woolmer]. The number of copies printed is unknown, but according to the ledger 544 copies had been sold after 15 months (early 1926, and there would be a second printing in 1927). The front cover art is by Vanessa Bell.~Theodora Bosanquet (1880-1961) was the amanuensis of Henry James for his last decade (1907-1916); well-educated, she quickly became indispensable to James, tapping the words of his novels and essays into her Remington typewriter as he spoke freely. This is her memoir of those years, which she wrote eight years after his death, at the request of Virginia Woolf; much of this essay discusses how the two of them worked together. "Secretary; suffragist; incisive critic and parodist of Henry James; witness to and recorder of his death-bed dictations; writer of one of the best memoirs about James; tireless psychical researcher who channeled a marvelously verbose James after his death, Theodore Bosanquet was a novel waiting to happen" [Thurschwell -- noting that Bosanquet has recently been "fictionalized" by three writers].~This is a fine copy, essentially as new. Woolmer 42.~This is an inscribed presentation copy, with the author's inscription (the year before her death) "To Eleanor Nicholes | who so well and truly appreciates | The Work of Henry James | from | Theodora Bosanquet | September, 1960." Dr. Eleanor Louise Nicholes (1915-1997) was the rare books librarian at the Pforzheimer Library, then of the Widener Collection at Harvard University, and finally at Wellesley College; she was a noted scholar on the life and works of Mary Wollstonecraft, and also in the field of Mormon history. Virginia Woolf; Theodora Bosanquet; Eleanor Nicholes: quite a trio of intelligent women brought together in this volume.

Oeuvre originale

Its backbone was the collection of Wyndham Law of the Chinese Maritime Customs Service, and included oil paintings, watercolours, sketches, prints and photographs, most of which are based on landscape scenes of the South China trading ports in the 18th and 19th centuries, and of British activities in China.. The Chater Collection was dispersed and largely destroyed during the Japanese occupation, and only 94 pieces (now an important part of the collection of the Hong Kong Museum of Art) are known to have survived (Wikipedia). Revenge against France is the theme central to the plot of Lämmel's novel in which ancient Atlantis is discovered and claimed by Germany. "Inführ's hero is Peter Hertenberger, a young man from Styria whose 'peasant blood' and affinity to the 'soil' are combined with a talent for all things technical. This leads to a crisis in which his identity as a true German Austrian prevails, leading him to embark for Berlin in order to 'achieve something greater for the German Volk' as an inventor. In Berlin he meets Ria Wimpffen, the daughter of the president of a 'German-American Stars League' that advocates the strengthening of German elements in the United States. While crossing the Atlantic on the way to visit the United States, Hartenberger discovers the sunken island of Atlantis with the help of a 'nucleon spectrascope' he has invented. He immediately decides to offer the riches certain to be found on Atlantis to the German Reich in order to improve both its financial situation and its military strength. When the French try to hinder his excavation efforts, he destroys their fleet with a ray gun capable of melting iron, thereby ushering in what is explicitly referred to as 'a new epoch in world history.' With the help of the riches discovered by Hartenberger, Germany becomes so powerful that France -- fearing a further military catastrophe -- withdraws its troops from the Rhineland and writes off any further reparations payments. As a result of all these miraculous events, the German population is swept up in a 'wave of healthy nationalism,' leading to Hartenberger's election to a ten-year term as 'national dictator' by the German parliament. During the course of these years, he acts as a peacemaker in the ever-smoldering conflict between the 'swastika' and the 'Soviet star,' annuls all the conditions of the infamous Treaty of Versailles, carries out restoration of Germany's former colonies, and finally leads Austria 'home into the Reich.' After accomplishing all this, however, he does not rest on his laurels but prepares for even more 'immense tasks.' as the last line of the novel so allusively puts it." - Hermand. Fisher, Fantasy and Politics: Visions of the Future in the Weimar Republic, pp. 107; 109. Hermand, Old Dreams of a New Reich: Volkish Utopias and National Socialism, p. 99. Lexikon 2, p. 171. Bloch (2002) 1580. Nagl, p. 256. Boards lightly worn at spine ends, corner tips rubbed, a nearly fine copy. An uncommon book in a delicate binding seldom offered for sale. (#142324)

t Schat der zielen, dat is: Het geheele leven ons Heeren Jesu Christi naer de vyer Evangelisten.

      - Hollstein XXVII, p. The book's title may have been influenced by an otherwise unrelated work published in the previous year, Den schat der zielen, an unillustrated translation of a work apparently first written in Catalan by Miguel Comalada, which saw later editions as well.

STUDYING PLAYGROUNDS AND SUMMER ACTIVITIES] Ploshchadki kak odin iz vidov letnikh zaniatii s det'mi [i.e. Playgrounds Like One of a Summer Activity for Children]

Brokgauz-Efron, Leningrad 1924 - 106 pp. 23x16,5 cm. In original printed wrappers. Some tears of the extremities. Otherwise very good. Very rare. One of 4000 copies. A very attractive edition and a curious work on children's playgrounds in cities in early Soviet Russia, first of its kind. The book includes a short historical study about genesis and evolution of playgrounds in Russia. The author states that there is no established method of working with children at playgrounds - only elements borrowed from foreign methods like Froebel, Montessori, genetic and ancient greek method, method of central idea. Next chapters can be considered as recommendations for organizing children's playgrounds: how to choose a right place for it, what constructions it should have, getting animals («every playground should have something alive, starting from a dog and finishing with maybe a goat»), how to involve kids into making a garden, what kind of books should it have, how to arrange hiking during summer (to forrest, field, river, lake, village, et al.), how to watch nature («Let's start with the sun and suggest the children to come to the playground early in the morning to watch the sunrise and note where it rises, and to do the same in the evening and note where it sets. If we repeat it for two weeks from the same place, children will notice that points in which sun rises and sets are different»), how to throw a celebration and involve children in preparation, how to organize groups of interest («We know that children are neither patient nor skilled enough to deal with photographs in a proper way. Young photographer would always overexpose, or underexpose, or mess up with developer or fixer, so his work must be corrected by supervisor or more experienced fellow»). The author also gives estimated questions and subjects of talk with children, like duties (or wishes) for members of the playground, how to build day schedule for summer, parents meetings, importance of keeping statistics (examples of statistical tables and forms given in application in the end), playground's staff. Features and details of organizing playgrounds in a village are described separately. Examples of ads about playgrounds from the first years after the revolution presented in the end as well as list of recommended books, table with approximate needs in figures for the playground (materials, tools, etc.), a plan of summer activities for children of one Leningrad school in 1921 (equipment list, staff, schedule of interest groups, hiking trips, handmade work, games and organized groups of kids - 'keepers of toys', 'keepers of board games', ' janitors', 'group captains' etc.). Overall a great inside view of a idealist phenomenon which didn't last for long and transformed into other institutions. Worldcat locates no copies. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Zapiski poeta. Povest? [Aufzeichnungen eines Dichters. Erzählung].

Original-Ausgabe. - Kat.         LO SPETTATORE ITALIANO Rivista letteraria dell’Italia Nuova. Direttori: Giuseppe Bottai - Arnaldo Frateili.

Roma, Industrie Grafiche Romane, 1924. In-8, brossura orig.

Berlin. 1st Edition. Original Paper-wrappers, 8vo. Original issues. In German. Ongoing page-count throughout the issues. Each issue has around 25 pages. Issues present are: 1-24 (complete Volumes 1-6) , 26, 27, 29, 32-34, 36, 39, 41-42, 44-47, 49, 50 (final issue) . With founding leaflet and Register (index) to all the issues. Also includes 4 pages of type-written mimeograph introductory letters, as well as an introductory pamphlet. Founded in 1924, the Gesellschaft für die Jüdische Familien-Forschung ("Society for Jewish Family Research") began publishing its newsletter to connect Jewish genealogists and create a forum for their research. Its editor, the ophthalmologist Arthur Czellitzer (1871-1943) , claimed that the understanding of familial lineage is particularly important for the Jewish people. Without their own country or language, knowledge of family history would bring the Jews closer to their original roots, even if they had distanced themselves from the religious rituals of their ancestors. The work and publications of the Society was cut short by the Nazis who, tragically and ironically, used the research of the organization and the scholarship it had inspired, to identify, persecute and murder the Jews of Germany. Czellitzer himself was murdered in the death camp of Sobibor. SUBJECT(S) : Jews -- Germany -- Genealogy -- Periodicals. OCLC lists 24 holdings worldwide. Issue 50 is missing the bottom part of last two pages. A few issues (33, 46, 47, and 50) are toning and a bit fragile, with covers sometimes detached. On the whole at least 35 of the issues are in unusually good condition with little to no toning and very little wear. Overall very good- condition. (GENE-1-39A)
