Zapiski poeta. Povest? [Aufzeichnungen eines Dichters. Erzählung].

Original-Ausgabe. - Kat. Sprengel Museum 218. - Bowlt/Hernad 73. - Kat. MoMa 750. - Andel, Avantgarde Pagedesign 252.

Plon-Nourrit et Cie, Paris 1924 - 198 x 130 mm. (7 3/4 x 5 1/8"). 4 p.l., 305 pp., [1] leaf. FIRST EDITION. No. 9 OF 50 COPIES of the deluxe edition on Chine, from a total edition of 1,700 copies (and 62 hors commerce copies). HANDSOME MOTTLED CALF, GILT AND INLAID, BY KAUFFMANN-HORCLOIS (stamp-signed on verso of front flyleaf), upper cover with modelled and inlaid Grolieresque strapwork, some of the compartments formed by the straps tooled with blind rules, others with stippled gilt, smooth spine with vertical gilt titling, turn-ins with multiple gilt rules, patterned silk endleaves, marbled flyleaves, top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed. Original wrappers bound in. HALF TITLE WITH AUTHORS' PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION (the ink bleeding through slightly onto title page). Mahé III, 506; Encyclopedia Judaica XV, 1048. Front board just slightly bowed, silk endleaves fraying slightly and beginning to lift at edges, otherwise a fine copy, clean and bright inside and out. This is a beautifully bound, deluxe presentation copy of a work the "Encyclopedia Judaica" calls "an enthusiastic survey of Zionism's spiritual and messianic roots." The title here is a phrase from the liturgies of Passover and Yom Kippur familiar to all members of the Jewish faith, a prayer/wish to celebrate the holy day "next year in Jerusalem," returning to the Promised Land. Here, however, the brothers Tharaud disparage "those Western Jews who were happy to dispatch their [Eastern European] brethren to a Promised Land with which they themselves felt only nominal links." (Ency. Judaica) The French novelists and essayists Jérôme (1874-1953) and Jean (1877-1952) Tharaud wrote both fiction and non-fiction on Jewish themes, seeking to inform Gentile readers about Judaism, Jewish traditions, and life in Eastern European ghettoes. Their view of Zionism changed in the decade after this work was published, and they eventually embraced the idea of enforced separation of Jewish and gentile societies. Our skilled and imaginative binder Kauffmann established premises in Paris in 1875. François Horclois, son of binder Jules Horclois, married Kauffmann's daughter, joined the firm, and succeeded his father-in-law after Kauffmann's death in 1929. François continued to operate the bindery until 1961, when he died at age 82. The example of his work pictured by Duncan & De Bartha (p. 96) displays the distinctive marbling and modelling techniques used here to such pleasing effect.         Panorama de Paris ». Raoul DUFY.

Paris 1924 - Photomontage de 1924, composé de 4 tirages photographiques d'époque (33,2 x 26,4 cm) (bandes verticales : 4 x 26,4 x 8,3 cm) contrecollés sur une feuille cartonnée couleur gris taupe (35,4 x 42,8 cm) / Vintage photomontage of 1924, composed of 4 vintage photographic prints (vertical stripes 4 x 26,3 x 8,3 cm) glued on a taupe gray cardboard sheet (35,4 x 42,8 cm). [.] Document unique dédicacé par Raoul Dufy à ses amis Poiret (minimes usure en bord de planche) (provenance certifiant l'originalité de l'oeuvre) / Unique document signed by Raoul Dufy to his friends Poiret (minimal wear on board) (provenance certifying the originality of the work).       Ivan MILEV, Gestalter: ЕКЪ [Glockengeläut]. Sedmichno ilyustrovano spisanie [Illustrierte Wochenzeitschrift (ab Nr. 2)]. Erscheint jede Woche. Redaktion: [Panteley Mateev] Karasimeonov. 1. Jg., Nr. 1-8 (14. Feb. - 12. April 1924) [Alles]. - Bulgarische Periodika, Annot. Bibl. Verz., 1955; Milev 1994, S. 82, Nrn. 201, 202 u. 203 (Abb. der Umschl. d. Nrn. 2, 3 u. 4).

      - Tokyo Fucho 1924 (Taisho 13). Two volumes 26x19cm, publisher's embossed wrappers (browned); 681pp, heaps of illustrations: folding colour plans, architectural elevations and plans, photo plates, etc. Browning and foxing expected from the paper but still a rather good fresh copy. The official report on the 1922 Tokyo Memorial Peace Exposition is the very model of what an official report on an exhibition should be. You could just about rebuild the whole thing from this. The detail extends to measured drawings of light fittings, plans of the garden beds and coloured reproductions of the tickets and advertising. The 1922 Peace Memorial Exhibition, celebrating the League of Nations and a bright future, was the most lavish national Expo ever held. The pavilions were a mix of stately, ultra modern and funfair fairy tale.

Fairy Tales

London: Hodder and Stoughton Limited, 1924 A very good copy of the 1st edition - the 'edition du luxe' - in full gilt-decorated vellum binding, signed by Kay Nielsen. With 12 tipped-in colour plates, 16 full page black and white plates and numerous designs by Nielsen. This was Nielsen's third book illustration. He began the work in 1912 but the disruption caused by World War I meant that it was not published until 1924 - and although a beautiful production it could not afford the number of plates that embellished East of the Sun, West of the Moon, his previous work. The market for expensive illustrated gift books declined significantly after the War and Nielsen only illustrated two more works before moving to Copenhagen and working on set designs for the theatre. This book is number 119 of 500 printed. The vellum binding has bright illustration. It has some grubbiness and darkening to the spine; a slight bump to the bottom front corner; and slight marking to the back board, particularly the bottom corner. The spine is cocked to the front. Top page edges are gilt; side edge is untrimmed. The contents are in very bright and clean condition; occasional very light spotting to tissue guards. There is a slight crease to the tissue guard to the frontispiece and a small light brown area to the bottom margin of p 153 (lightly mirrored on 152). There is a small scuff and slight loss to the bottom of the rear free endpaper. A very nice copy.

This lovely first edition, first printing is in Near Fine condition. It is tightly bound in original blue boards, with gold gilt detailing to the front and rear, and lettering to the spine. The dust jacket is in Very good condition, there is some mild chipping to the edges and top of the spine and a tear running approximately an inch up from the front bottom edge of the spine and then across the spine, but there is no loss to the jacket (please see photos). There is the odd mark, the main one being a stain across the bottom of the front panel and rubbing to the rear, but the jacket remains very smart and attractive nonetheless. Winnie the Pooh:-Published by Methuen, London; 1926. This is an excellent copy of this rare first edition. It is in Fine condition, tightly bound in original green boards, with gold gilt detailing to the front and lettering to the spine. A lovely copy of this first edition! The House at Pooh Corner:-Published by Methuen, London; 1928. This smart first edition copy of the popular final book of the winnie the pooh series is in Near Fine condition. There is some slight bumping to the spine ends and board corneres, a little fading to the salmon pink of the original boards, and a few tiny black marks to the rear board, but apart from this the binding is tight and the boards free from blemishes or damage, with the lovely gold gilt detailing to the front and lettering to the spine. There is a gift inscription to the front free endpaper, and the odd age spot and very slight toning, particularly to the free endpapers, but apart from this the pages are remarkably clean and bright and free from blemishes or wear. The dustjacket is in Near Fine condition. There is some chipping to the spine ends and the edges, and a darkening to the edges and spine, but apart from this the jacket retains it's lovely salmon pink colour.
