        Faces of Russia.

London: n.p 1924 - Folio (36.3 x 28.5 cm). From the limited edition of 500 copies, this copy is not numbered. 101, [4]pp., with 30 illustrations, all but one tipped-in as issued, most full page, and many in colour. Modern blue morocco over cloth, silver vignette and lettering to upper cover, silver upper edge. FIRST EDITION, one of only 500 copies, this one out-of-series. Numerous illustrations and tipped in reproductions of the artist's work are accompanied with essays by Louis Reau, Clare Sheridan, Andre Levinson, Claude Farrere and Andre Antoine. Although Grigoriev left Russia in 1918, the faces of Russian peasants continued to haunt him, and he worked tirelessly on this evolved cycle while living in France in the early 1920s. The result is an intense study of the faces of "primitive" people; each portrait depicts the peasant in a uniquely harsh light, exposing the hardships of their lives through their rugged faces and expressive eyes. Every subject is charged with universal human traits and reveals a moving impression of weariness at odds with unrelenting resilience. Through the artist's characteristically vivid palette and bold, Cubist-inspired brushstrokes, the viewer is drawn into the subject's world and inner spirit. ".You ask me how I came to paint the series of pictures entitled 'Visages Russes.' I have been watching and studying the Russian people for many years, both before and since the war and revolution, and these paintings are the fruits of my observation. If, during the revolution, I have been studying the people so intently, and if the work I have done at this period manifests its spirit so frankly and strongly, it may be due to the fact that circumstances compelled me to remain in Russia so long without leaving. My conception of the Russian people is both intuitive and artistic. Even as a child I was struck by the animal aspect of the Russian people. It is this same animal that I see in the Russian peasant of today, and I am glad to note that Gorky has come to a similar conclusion, for Gorky's impression proves that I had a clearer vision of reality than those who were idealizing the Russian masses, or did not know the actual Slav." (From a letter from Boris Grigoriev to curator Christian Brinton, printed in the exhibition catalogue for Grigoriev's 1923 exhibition at the Worcester Art Museum).         MARK TWAIN'S AUTOBIOGRAPHY, With an Introduction by Albert Bigelow Paine

New York: Harper and Brothers, 1924. 2 volumes. First edition, first state, BAL's "A" printing. With a fine portrait frontispiece in each volume and with printed holograph of Twain's writing. Tall 8vo, publisher's original dark-blue ribbed cloth gilt lettered on the spines, t.e.g., with a printed copy of Twain's autograph in gilt on the upper covers. 361, index; 357, index, ads pp. A fine and handsome set, very clean and quite fresh. A very well preserved example with only the lightest hint of mellowing to the gilt lettering on Vol. I. A VERY NICE SET, WELL PRESERVED AND A HANDSOME COPY OF THE FIRST STATE OF THE FIRST EDITION. "As might be expected of anything which Mark Twain wrote, this autobiography is unlike any other ever written-as unconventional and unorthodox as its great author. Always, when the time came for him to go on with the dictation, he chose as his subject whatever was most interesting to him at the moment, regardless of chronological order. For he believed that a man's thoughts, not his outward acts are his true history, which alone reveal him completely. "The resulting book is a stream of table-talk: anecdotes, humorous and serious; reminiscences of his mother, his daughter Susy, his boyhood days in Missouri; chronicles of his friendships with all manner of men, from General Grant and President Cleveland to his Irish coachman and the unfamed intimates of his vagabond youth; bold expressions of opinion on every sort of topic-all are here, full of the vigor and the humanity of their author, and forming an inexhaustible mine of entertainment, amusement, and delight." Dictated by Twain over several years with the stipulation that it be published after his death.

Geomeetriline inimene VI kogu värsse [Geometrical man 6th book of poems]

Tartu: Propeller, 1924. Octavo (24.5 × 16.5 cm). Original wrappers with a constructivist design and typography by Jaan Vahtra; 109, [3] pp. One original woodcut print and fifteen smaller illustrations by Vahtra in the text. Printed on thick paper. A very good copy; very light wear to upper edge. One of the most striking publications of the Estonian avant-garde, showing the breadth of Barbarus' literary aspirations and his interest in constructivism. The volume consists of five poetic cycles, "Geometrical Man," "Human Space," "The Cast of Man," "Living Monuments," and "Paris," illustrated by fifteen vignettes and one full-page original woodcut print by Jaan Vahtra. In the book accompanying a 2012 exhibition of Estonian avant-garde art, Tiit Hennoste writes, citing Barbarus: "His positive programme is a declaration of revolution and the role of the poet as creator of new life: '... new poetry is written on the wall of the big city with an electric finger, is created in the smoke of factory chimneys, the burning flames of smelting ovens: new poetry is cosmic, international, the poetry of humanity [...].' Barbarus's poetry became Constructivist. The first fruit of this is the manifestation of Estonian Constructivism, Geomeetriline Inimene, featuring Barbarus's texts accompanied by illustrations and designs by Jaan Vahtra [...] this was the first pure Estonian metropolitan poetry collection, the sources of which one can find in contemporary French poetry" (Geomeetriline inimene, 81). The constructivist principle is also embodied visually in the poetic texts themselves, which make use of indentation, enjambment, ellipses, varying font sizes, as well as vertical and horizontal lines. Barbarus (Johannes Vares, 1890-1946), lived as a doctor in Pärnu, from where he pursued his literary career and was also active as a socialist politician. Afraid of the NKVD, he committed suicide in 1946. KVK, OCLC show three copies, at Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, the British Library, and the Frick Art Library.

Zapiski poeta. Povest? [Aufzeichnungen eines Dichters. Erzählung].

Original-Ausgabe. - Kat. Sprengel Museum 218. - Bowlt/Hernad 73. - Kat. MoMa 750. - Andel, Avantgarde Pagedesign 252.

ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT BOOKS ON CONSTRUCTIVIST ARCHITECTURE] Stil' i epokha: Problemy sovremennoi arkhitektury [i.e. Style and Epoch: Problems of Contemporary Architecture]

Gosizdat, Moscow 1924 - 238 pp.: ill. 22x18 cm. In contemporary binding (cloth spine, cardboards; original wrappers are not preserved). General wear of the binding, scuffed rear board, tear of the rear free endpaper and half-title, previous owner's signature on the title page and last page. Otherwise very good. First edition. One of 2000 copies. Very rare! This influential work of architectural theory by one of the founders of Soviet constructivism in architecture Moisei Ginzburg (1892-1946) which became the manifesto of constructivist architecture, a style which combined an interest in advanced technology and engineering with socialist ideals. The book has similarities to Le Corbusier's ''Vers une Architecture'' (1923) which has never been translated into Russian. Ginzburg is mostly famous for the Narkomfin building in Moscow. He was the founder of the OSA Group (Organisation of Contemporary Architects), which had links with Vladimir Mayakovsky and Osip Brik's LEF Group. The OSA experimented with forms of Communal apartments to provide for the new Communist way of life. Its magazine ''SA'' (Sovremennaya Arkhitektura [i.e. Contemporary Architecture]) was created by Ginzburg, Vesnin brothers, Aleksei Gan, Varavara Stepanova, Alexander Rodchenko, it featured discussions of city planning and communal living, as well as the futuristic and avant-garde projects by Ivan Leonidov, Le Corbusier, Ivan Nikolaev and others. The book was regarded as very important by the OSA so in 1927 it was sent out to the subscribers of the ''Contemporary Architecture''. The book Style and Epoch shows Ginzburg's path to constructivism. In the early 1920s, Ginzburg viewed constructivism as a necessary early stage in the development of a new architecture, not yet realizing its style-forming role as an influential creative future. The book received wide resonance and evoked various responses of contemporaries. For many, it became a manifesto of early constructivism, and provoked a stormy reaction from the opponents with its pointed language. It helped many Soviet architects in that transitional stage to determine their creative positions. Worldcat locates copies in Columbia, Getty, Stanford, NYPL, Berkeley, University of Illinois, University of Michigan. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Both copies slightly worn and browned; other minor defects. First Edition, second issue (the first issue was published in November of 1923). Rufer (Eng.) p. 42. Ringer p. 315. Tetsuo Satoh pp. 15-16. "In the second issue, which is billed as such, the portrait drawing on the title has been replaced with a photograph." Website of the Arnold Schoenberg Center, Vienna. Erich Itor Kahn (1905-1956) studied at the Hoch'sches Konservatorium in Frankfurt. An early champion of Schoenberg, he gave the world premiere of the composer's piano piece op. 33a; he also studied the present op. 23 cycle early on. The notational corrections are of particular interest. The waltz concluding the cycle, first sketched in 1921, is considered the earliest example of Schoenbergian twelve-note composition.

        The Eleventh Virgin

New York: Albert and Charles Boni, 1924. 312, [i]p., first edition, first printing, original blue cloth with minor edge wear and slight bumping of corners, spine lettering slightly dulled, previous owner's name (Martha Lauz) on front free endpaper in light pencil, minor crease to title page, a few pages printed slightly off-center, overall in very good condition. Autobiographical novel by the founder of the Catholic Worker movement, written at the age of 26 in the midst of an already tumultuous life before her conversion to Catholic pacifism. She regretted its publication and later sought to reclaim every copy she could find. Beginning from childhood, the novel incorporates Day's education and activism, experiences working at the Socialist Daily, the New York Call and the Masses (re-titled "The Flame" in the book), and deeply personal affairs including a portrait of Floyd Dell (as Hugh Brace), an account of an abortion, and a final monologue in which the central character realizes that her political activities and modern womanhood have distracted her from her truer goal of loving a man and becoming a mother. Walter Rideout lists this as one of three novels by "tired radicals" in the 1920s, placing it midway along Day's journey "From Union Square to Rome," as she described her path in an essay about her conversion. In his recent introduction to the book, Paul Bowers cites a passage from William Miller's autobiography describing Dorothy Day's feelings about the book half a century after its publication, in 1975: "She held out one book and asked, 'What should I do about this?' I knew the book. It was The Eleventh Virgin, her autobiographical novel. 'It's all true,' she said. It was a book I knew that she hated and would have rejoiced if every copy could have been consumed in flames and then be forever put out of her mind. But now she stood there, holding out to me one of the few copies left. I said nothing. Dorothy was controlled, but I could tell by the pale, taut look in her face that the business of turning all of this material over to me was a moment of great stress and pain for her. She was, in a way, confronting history.

        [GRANDFATHER LENIN]

Pamiati V.I. Lenina [i.e. In Memory of V.I. Lenin]. [N.p., 1920s]. 11 pp.: ill. 21,5x18 cm. Handwritten school notebook. Small tears of the covers, otherwise very good. The unique survival of the time. Watercolor picture of Lenin as a child is on the front cover signed by child's hand (V. Antonovich) as well as the title ''In Memory of V.I. Lenin'' and ''#1'' at the top. Notebook includes 6 children's poems, each signed, and 6 drawings in pencil and watercolor paint. The first poem is dated (30th of January, Friday) and a title ''Behind the Lenin's Coffin''. Vladimir Lenin died on the 21st of January in 1924 and was put in a mausoleum 6 days later. So these poems are composed and written short after that and full of sorrow and grief. Lenin was considered a leader of the proletariat and father of a young Soviet country. 'Grandfather' Lenin was the primary source, challenging the authority of which would put the whole communist system under attack unlike the challenge to Stalin's authority was put at stake only by the totalitarian regime (Lenin fought for the revolution, and 'Koba' - for power). Throughout existence of Soviet Union children were taught respect and love for 'grandfather' Lenin, not Stalin. There are three portraits of a young Lenin in the notebook and all of them have a resemblance with Parkhomenko's drawing from a Little Oktobrists five-pointed star badge. In 1923-1924 Little Oktobrists was a name of the children born in 1917, the year of the October revolution. Later the term was used for the youth organization for children between 7 and 9 years of age. Another drawing shows funeral procession. A portrait of a grown Lenin follows the poem titled ''Five Nights and Days'' referring to the time for which the coffin was installed in the Hall of Columns for the official farewell. In general, all poems are gloomy and heavy which was very in tune with the epoch: ''And snowflakes are falling and falling on Lenin's white from the snow coffin''. At the same time the cult of his persona started to flourish even more: ''Lenin is dead - Lenin is alive!''. In the form of a civil religion of national scale, the cult of Lenin spilled out immediately after his death. The task was to establish an emotional connection between people and the party, personified by Lenin. Considerable attention was paid to the propaganda of Leninism among children. The stories of the childhood of an energetic, diligent boy Volodya, who never forgot his duty to the people, were to become a model of behavior for every Soviet child. And the idealized 'Ilyich' - named after his patronymic in order to make it closer and more accessible - served as the personification of the regime in the guise of a smiling good-natured who saved Russia and loved children. It was expected that the children brought up by Leniniana would grow up loyal Soviet citizens, and their youthful love for Lenin in maturity would turn into devotion to the Soviet power. A very interesting detail about mausoleum's drawing in the notebook: the depicted building is the second temporary mausoleum designed by Aleksei Shchusev made out of wood - a documented evidence of the famous architect's work which existed only for 5 years.

        Das Märchen vom Paradies.

Hannover, Apossverlag, 1924 - 31 S. mit zahlr. Textillustrationen von Käte Steinitz. Erste Ausgabe, selten. - W.-G. 8.

When We Were Very Young WITH: Winnie-The-Pooh WITH: Now We Are Six WITH: The House At Pooh Corner With Decorations by Ernest H Shepard

London: Methuen & Co., Ltd, 1924-1928. First editions of each work in Milne's Pooh quartet. Octavo, original cloth, pictorial endpapers, top edge gilt. Now We Are Six signed by A.A. Milne on the title page. Each are fine in near fine dust jackets with a touch of rubbing. Now We Are Six is signed by Milne on the title page. Milne Of Course I remember you!" Housed in a custom full leather box by Zaehnsdorf. Illustrated by Ernest Shepard. An exceptional set. Although Alan Alexander Milne wrote novels, short stories, poetry and many plays for adults, in addition to his work as assistant editor for Punch from 1906 to 1914, it is his writings for children that have captured the hearts of millions of people worldwide and granted Milne everlasting fame" (Silvey, 461). Milne wrote most of these poems at the request of friend and fellow poet Rose Fyleman, who was planning a new children's magazine. "On a rain-blighted holiday in Wales, [Milne] escaped from the crowd of fellow guests to the summerhouse, and for 11 days wrote a set of children's verses, one each day... 'There on the other side of the lawn was a child with whom I had lived for three years [his son, Christopher Robin]... and here within me were unforgettable memories of my own childhood.' He added more verses when he got home, enough for a book, and allowed some to be published in advance in Punch" (Carpenter & Prichard, 351). Shepard, a Punch staff artist at the time, provided delightful line vignettes, resulting in "a wonderful marriage of verse and vision. His delicately precise and fresh drawings had an instant appeal" (DNB). When We Were Very Young is second issue, as usual, with page ix numbered.

Large tape repair to the spine, with tape exposed in the gutter; some edge wear and toning; overall very good. 9.75 x 12.25 inches (25 x 31.5 cm).In 1924, the 25-year-old Poulenc was commissioned by Diaghilev to compose a piece based on Glazunov's "Les Sylphides." Instead, the young composer produced a work based on the paintings of Watteau depicting Louis XIV and various women in his "Parc aux Biches." (The word biche is usually translated as "doe," an adult female deer, but "does" was used as a slang for coquettish women.) Poulenc described his work as "a contemporary drawing room party suffused with an atmosphere of wantonness, which you sense if you are corrupted, but of which an innocent-minded girl would not be conscious." Diaghilev recognized the great potential of the ballet and produced it for the 1924 Ballet Russes season, bringing Poulenc into the forefront of French music. In "The Rest is Noise" (2007), Alex Ross notes that "Poulenc would write more substantial scores - he had the richest, most surprising career of any of Les Six - but Les Biches retains its nasty champagne kick after all these years." Jacques Heugel (1890-1979), the third generation to run the venerable Éditions Heugel, was responsible for bringing some of the most important French composers of the early twentieth century under the publisher's wing. The composers he brought to the publisher included Georges Auric, Reynaldo Hahn, Francis Poulenc, Franz Schmitt, Jacques Ibert, Darius Milhaud and André Jolivet.
