Paris: Editions de la Sirene, 1924 - Octavo. Original white wrappers printed in green and black. Housed in a green quarter morocco solander box by The Chelsea Bindery. Contents browned as always but an excellent copy. First French edition of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. With the translator's signed presentation inscription to the first blank leaf.         The Mark of Zorro

New York: Grosset and Dunlap, 1924. 1st edition. Near fine in a 1st printing jacket (having all points as above) with a chip at the base of the front panel, some wear, rubs, and 1 fold strengthened, otherwise very good. Grosset published mostly reprints, but not this one. A. film and for our 1924 novel, but reports of a 1920 book edition are a hoax. Near fine / very good.

        When We Were Very Young

London: Methuen & Co.,, 1924. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, gilt vignettes to the covers, top edge gilt. Illustrated by Ernest H. Shepard. Very slightly bowed, slight marking to spine, marking to fore and bottom edges, occasional slight blemishes to contents. A very good copy. First edition, first impression. Milne composed most of When We Were Very Young as entertainment during a dreary holiday in Wales. Many of the poems first ran as weekly instalments in Punch, charmingly illustrated by fellow contributor Shepard. When the collection was published in the present book the first printing sold out almost immediately. By the end of the year more than 53,000 copies had been printed of what The Times called "the greatest children's book since Alice" (Thwaite, p. 286). This copy is in the second state of the first impression, with the page number ix present in the preliminaries. In copies of the first state the contents leaf (ix-x) is unnumbered.

Zapiski poeta. Povest? [Aufzeichnungen eines Dichters. Erzählung].

Original-Ausgabe. - Kat. Sprengel Museum 218. - Bowlt/Hernad 73. - Kat. MoMa 750. - Andel, Avantgarde Pagedesign 252.

When We Were Very Young WITH: Winnie-The-Pooh WITH: Now We Are Six WITH: The House At Pooh Corner With Decorations by Ernest H Shepard

London: Methuen & Co., Ltd, 1924-1928. First editions of each work in Milne's Pooh quartet. Octavo, original cloth, pictorial endpapers, top edge gilt. First issue of When We Were Very Young without p. IX numbering, jacket with song setting advert only. The first three books are each signed by A.A. Milne on the title page. Each are fine in near fine dust jackets with light rubbing and wear. Now We Are Six is signed by Milne on the title page. Housed in a custom full leather box. Illustrated by Ernest Shepard. An exceptional set, most rare and desirable signed with all being first issue books and jackets. Although Alan Alexander Milne wrote novels, short stories, poetry and many plays for adults, in addition to his work as assistant editor for Punch from 1906 to 1914, it is his writings for children that have captured the hearts of millions of people worldwide and granted Milne everlasting fame" (Silvey, 461). Milne wrote most of these poems at the request of friend and fellow poet Rose Fyleman, who was planning a new children's magazine. "On a rain-blighted holiday in Wales, [Milne] escaped from the crowd of fellow guests to the summerhouse, and for 11 days wrote a set of children's verses, one each day... 'There on the other side of the lawn was a child with whom I had lived for three years [his son, Christopher Robin]... and here within me were unforgettable memories of my own childhood.' He added more verses when he got home, enough for a book, and allowed some to be published in advance in Punch" (Carpenter & Prichard, 351). Shepard, a Punch staff artist at the time, provided delightful line vignettes, resulting in "a wonderful marriage of verse and vision. His delicately precise and fresh drawings had an instant appeal" (DNB). When We Were Very Young is second issue, as usual, with page ix numbered.

London: Methuen & Co, 1924. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. E.H. Shepard. 1st edition. The first of the 4 Pooh books. One of 100 large paper copies, the smallest limitation for this title, signed by Milne and Shepard. Fine in fine dustjacket, a pristine jacket, with the spine wholly unfaded and pure blue, and on this book, that is a rare thing. Other copies in jacket offered elsewhere (chipped, torn, browned, or faded) are a practical joke on value, even when they're priced less than ours, because they're never enough less. It has been referred to as the most significant children's book since Alice.

Zapiski poeta. Povest? [Aufzeichnungen eines Dichters. Erzählung].

Original-Ausgabe. - Kat.         Portfolio of Seven Photogravure Plates from Photographs by Robert J. Flaherty of Eskimos.

Revillion Freres [ca. 1924], New York - A published portfolio of photogravures of Eskimos in the sub-arctic part of Eastern Canada. Images approx. 22 x 16 cm. on sheets 50 x 33 cm. (19 3/4 x 13 inches), with captions on attached slips. Loose images along with tissue interleaves and printed introductory sheet, set in gray boards folding box. Scarce portfolio of seven images which were chosen from a group of 18 that were made during a series of five expeditions over eight years. The images are: Nascaupie Indian Chief, Northern Labrador; Tooktoo (the Deer), Chief of Sikoslingmuit Eskimos, Southern Baffin Island; Cunayou (The Sculpin), Sikoslingmuit Eskimo Girl, Southern Baffin Island, The Gramophone, Nyla and Child, Eteeveemuit Eskimo of Cape Dufferin, Northwestern Ungava, The Huskie (The Wolf Dog of the Eskimos). Generally this portfolio is found with 6 photogravures; why this one has seven is not clear. Attached box lid with a couple of joint splits and two blank tissue guards with wrinkles but overall a very handsome and clean set in the original box. This gathering is unusual in that all of the images are of Inuits (other than the Husky); there are no nature scenes. Laid in is a business card from Thierry Mallet, president on Revillon Freres, on which Mallet has written in ink ÒDear Doctor Bancroft, may I send you these few photos of the North with my compliments, [signed] Thierry MalletÓ. Both of the famous Bancrofts, Hubert Howe and Albert Little, were dead at this time. It is possible that it was given to the Dr. Bancroft that was head of Geology at the University of British Columbia Vancouver at that time. author of Plain Tales of the North and Glimpses of the Barren Lands, both published by Revillon Freres. Mallet was associated with Revillon Freres for over 20 years and was quite the arctic adventurer himself. Every year he spent three months in the far north among the Inuit arranging fur purchases. Robert J. Flaherty is often credited as being the father of documentary filmmaking. From 1910 to 1916 he served as a guide for the mapping expeditions of Sir William McKenzie to Hudson's Bay. It was during one of these trips that Flaherty decided to make a film of the land and people he had become so familiar with. His first film as accidentally destroyed but the seed had been planted and in 1922 he finished his first documentary, Nanook of the North. It won universal acclaim and is usually referred to as the first documentary film. Driven by the acclaim, Flaherty went on to make a number of other documentaries but he still is best known for Nanook. Flaherty made different financial arrangements for all his films and Nanook was made under the aegis of Revillon Freres, a large fur trading company. This production was probably issued by Revillon Freres to cash in on Flaherty's abrupt rise in fame.

Insectes: a Set of Four Hand-Coloured Lithographs.

Paris Du Chartre et van Buggenhoudt 1924 - Set of four lithographs hand coloured en pochoir. Superb lithographs by the master of the format. "In comparison with their variety and brilliance, much Art Deco illustration seems pallid and constrained. And of course their large format makes them particularly attractive for exhibition purposes" (Ray, The Art Deco Book in France). E.A. Seguy (1889-1985), was active as an artist in Paris from 1900 to 1925. His mastery of decorative design and colour is evident in the series of 11 beautiful pochoir portfolios he created. Unusual in his capacity to span the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods, Seguy's portfolio's remain exquisite examples of ornamentation and composition, featuring motifs based on the natural world, including flowers, foliage, crystals and animals.

L'AN PROCHAIN A JERUSALEM [NEXT YEAR IN JERUSALEM]

Paris: Plon-Nourrit et Cie, 1924. FIRST EDITION. No. 9 OF 50 COPIES of the deluxe edition on Chine, from a total edition of 1,700 copies (and 62 hors commerce copies). This is a beautifully bound, deluxe presentation copy of a work the "Encyclopedia Judaica" calls "an enthusiastic survey of Zionism's spiritual and messianic roots." The title here is a phrase from the liturgies of Passover and Yom Kippur familiar to all members of the Jewish faith, a prayer/wish to celebrate the holy day "next year in Jerusalem," returning to the Promised Land. Here, however, the brothers Tharaud disparage "those Western Jews who were happy to dispatch their [Eastern European] brethren to a Promised Land with which they themselves felt only nominal links." (Ency. Judaica) The French novelists and essayists Jérôme (1874-1953) and Jean (1877-1952) Tharaud wrote both fiction and non-fiction on Jewish themes, seeking to inform Gentile readers about Judaism, Jewish traditions, and life in Eastern European ghettoes. Their view of Zionism changed in the decade after this work was published, and they eventually embraced the idea of enforced separation of Jewish and gentile societies. Our skilled and imaginative binder Kauffmann established premises in Paris in 1875. François Horclois, son of binder Jules Horclois, married Kauffmann's daughter, joined the firm, and succeeded his father-in-law after Kauffmann's death in 1929. François continued to operate the bindery until 1961, when he died at age 82. The example of his work pictured by Duncan & De Bartha (p. 96) displays the distinctive marbling and modelling techniques used here to such pleasing effect.. 198 x 130 mm. (7 3/4 x 5 1/8"). 4 p.l., 305 pp., [1] leaf. FIRST EDITION. No. 9 OF 50 COPIES of the deluxe edition on Chine, from a total edition of 1,700 copies (and 62 hors commerce copies). HANDSOME MOTTLED CALF, GILT AND INLAID, BY KAUFFMANN-HORCLOIS (stamp-signed on verso of front flyleaf), upper cover with modelled and inlaid Grolieresque strapwork, some of the compartments formed by the straps tooled with blind rules, others with stippled gilt, smooth spine with vertical gilt titling, turn-ins with multiple gilt rules, patterned silk endleaves, marbled flyleaves, top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed. Original wrappers bound in. HALF TITLE WITH AUTHORS' PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION (the ink bleeding through slightly onto title page). Mahé III, 506; Encyclopedia Judaica XV, 1048. Front board just slightly bowed, silk endleaves fraying slightly and beginning to lift at edges, otherwise a fine copy, clean and bright inside and out.
