Milne's first volume (When We Were Very Young) was published in November 1924 and was such a resounding success that the subsequent three titles followed in quick succession. This is a lovely, unrestored set of first editions, with the jackets, the first volume inscribed by the Author on front free endpaper; L. T. Harding's book, A. A. Milne. Original royal blue cloth panelled in gilt with gilt vignettes to covers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, plain white endpapers as issued, preserved in a handsome twentieth-century slipcase with dark blue morocco spine and 5 raised bands over blue cloth, vertically ruled in gilt to sides, lettered gilt in compartments, with internal blue cloth-covered chemise, by James Macdonald Co., New York; pp. [vi], vii-x + [ii] + 99 + [i]; illustrated throughout in line by Shepard; both externally and internally a fine, fresh copy with minor bruising and rubbing to spine ends, a neat contemporary gift inscription, dated 1924, to front free endpaper, and the usual faint toning to free endpapers with negligible internal cracking, but overall an unusually handsome copy. First edition. The first of Milne's celebrated quartet of children's titles, and by far the scarcest, being issued in a very small edition of only 5,175 copies. Its success took the publishers completely by surprise as it reportedly sold out on its publishing day and was reprinted three times in one month. It has been referred to as the most significant children's book since Alice.

Navy gilt-stamped cloth over boards, fore-edge deckled, (vi), 420 pages, Index. Signed by Calvin Coolidge on ffep to Cuyler Reynolds (1866-1934), a well-regarded journalist and author who was named the Albany City Historian; his best-known work is the "Albany Chronicles." Reynolds tipped-in a newspaper photo from the NY Times of Coolidge's inaugural procession dated March 4, 1925. Also included are pieces of the dust jacket, one of which is stamped "Signed Nov 27 1924. Thanksgiving Day", and the White House stationery addressed label that was on the package. The pieces of the dust jacket are worn at edges, lightly stained. The book's corners and spine ends are bumped, top edge of text block stained, a few spots near foot of spine, a couple of pages are uncut, Cuyler Reynolds' address label and some toning/offsetting on rear end papers, book is protected in mylar jacket. "Large paper" is called for, but this is an 8" book. Good to very good in good only jacket, the latter not often seen. There is a slanted crack in the vellum boards, running from the fore-edge to the spine, caused by shrinking vellum and humidity changes. The front joint has a 4" crack running from the bottom upwrards. Dust jacket trimmed ¼", spine in 3 pieces, but nearly all are present and in place, chipping at rear of jacket. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 319 pp .

The dedication is to Charles Richard Crane (1858-1939), former American ambassador to China and a noted connoisseur of Arab culture. An uncommon work: the Atabey collection only contained this volume, with the Sotheby's sale catalogue noting 'apparently the first part was never published'.         Portfolio of Seven Photogravure Plates from Photographs by Robert J. Flaherty of Eskimos.

      Revillion Freres [ca. 1924], New York - A published portfolio of photogravures of Eskimos in the sub-arctic part of Eastern Canada. Images approx. 22 x 16 cm. on sheets 50 x 33 cm. (19 3/4 x 13 inches), with captions on attached slips. Loose images along with tissue interleaves and printed introductory sheet, set in gray boards folding box. Scarce portfolio of seven images which were chosen from a group of 18 that were made during a series of five expeditions over eight years. The images are: Nascaupie Indian Chief, Northern Labrador; Tooktoo (the Deer), Chief of Sikoslingmuit Eskimos, Southern Baffin Island; Cunayou (The Sculpin), Sikoslingmuit Eskimo Girl, Southern Baffin Island, The Gramophone, Nyla and Child, Eteeveemuit Eskimo of Cape Dufferin, Northwestern Ungava, The Huskie (The Wolf Dog of the Eskimos). Generally this portfolio is found with 6 photogravures; why this one has seven is not clear. Attached box lid with a couple of joint splits and two blank tissue guards with wrinkles but overall a very handsome and clean set in the original box.This gathering is unusual in that all of the images are of Inuits (other than the Husky); there are no nature scenes. Laid in is a business card from Thierry Mallet, president on Revillon Freres, on which Mallet has written in ink ÒDear Doctor Bancroft, may I send you these few photos of the North with my compliments, [signed] Thierry MalletÓ. Both of the famous Bancrofts, Hubert Howe and Albert Little, were dead at this time. It is possible that it was given to the Dr. Bancroft that was head of Geology at the University of British Columbia Vancouver at that time. author of Plain Tales of the North and Glimpses of the Barren Lands, both published by Revillon Freres. Mallet was associated with Revillon Freres for over 20 years and was quite the arctic adventurer himself. Every year he spent three months in the far north among the Inuit arranging fur purchases. Robert J. Flaherty is often credited as being the father of documentary filmmaking. From 1910 to 1916 he served as a guide for the mapping expeditions of Sir William McKenzie to Hudson's Bay. It was during one of these trips that Flaherty decided to make a film of the land and people he had become so familiar with. His first film as accidentally destroyed but the seed had been planted and in 1922 he finished his first documentary, Nanook of the North. It won universal acclaim and is usually referred to as the first documentary film. Driven by the acclaim, Flaherty went on to make a number of other documentaries but he still is best known for Nanook. Flaherty made different financial arrangements for all his films and Nanook was made under the aegis of Revillon Freres, a large fur trading company. This production was probably issued by Revillon Freres to cash in on Flaherty's abrupt rise in fame.

James Hansen Hjul (1882 - 1957), a structural engineer, constructed many buildings in San Francisco. He was the founder of the J.H. Construction Company and was listed as a contractor, civil engineer, structural engineer and construction engineer in San Francisco City Directories from 1907 to 1958. Most of his work occurred in the South of Market area on warehouses and industrial buildings.

      Paris Du Chartre et van Buggenhoudt 1924 - Set of four lithographs hand coloured en pochoir. Superb lithographs by the master of the format. "In comparison with their variety and brilliance, much Art Deco illustration seems pallid and constrained. And of course their large format makes them particularly attractive for exhibition purposes" (Ray, The Art Deco Book in France). E.A. Seguy (1889-1985), was active as an artist in Paris from 1900 to 1925. His mastery of decorative design and colour is evident in the series of 11 beautiful pochoir portfolios he created. Unusual in his capacity to span the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods, Seguy's portfolio's remain exquisite examples of ornamentation and composition, featuring motifs based on the natural world, including flowers, foliage, crystals and animals.

      Paris: Plon-Nourrit et Cie, 1924. FIRST EDITION. No. 9 OF 50 COPIES of the deluxe edition on Chine, from a total edition of 1,700 copies (and 62 hors commerce copies). This is a beautifully bound, deluxe presentation copy of a work the "Encyclopedia Judaica" calls "an enthusiastic survey of Zionism's spiritual and messianic roots." The title here is a phrase from the liturgies of Passover and Yom Kippur familiar to all members of the Jewish faith, a prayer/wish to celebrate the holy day "next year in Jerusalem," returning to the Promised Land. Here, however, the brothers Tharaud disparage "those Western Jews who were happy to dispatch their [Eastern European] brethren to a Promised Land with which they themselves felt only nominal links." (Ency. A collection of Cocteau's pen and ink drawings, mostly portraits, which was dedicated to Picasso.In October of 1946 Cocteau visited Amsterdam to attend the Dutch premiere of his famous film La Belle et la Bete. During this visit he was hosted by the Dutch songwriter and performer Alex de Haas. This volume has two large original drawings by Cocteau, one on the front fly, the other on the half-title, each dedicated by Cocteau to de Haas.Additionally affixed to the front pastedown is an original gelatin silver photograph (9.25" x 6.5") of Cocteau speaking at a press conference in Amsterdam, as well as a later color portrait of Cocteau from a magazine affixed on the copyright page. Additionally, on the recto of the rear fly-leaf is an original drawing by the well-known Dutch caricaturist Eppo Doeve, depicting de Haas paying homage to Cocteau on the stage of Tuschinski Theatre, 28 October 1946. This copy is referenced in the Dutch literary journal De Parelduiker May, 2007, pp.36-44.

Dès la mi-septembre 1962 en effet, le Mobilier national livre, sur sa demande, au Pavillon de La Lanterne « l'Ensemble mobilier Paris » de Raoul Dufy : un paravent, un canapé, deux grands fauteuils, quatre petits fauteuils et quatre chaises qui stagnaient depuis 1933 dans les réserves. Malraux quitte La Lanterne à l'automne 1967 pour rejoindre Louise de Vilmorin à Verrières-le Buisson, les Antimémoires achevés. C'était le premier travail du genre que réalisait le peintre. Pour un coup d'essai ce fut un coup de maître qui laissa Poiret admiratif. L'idée d'une collaboration avec le peintre germa tout naturellement dans l'esprit du couturier. A peine pensée, cette collaboration fut scellée ! Les deux hommes ouvrirent à la fin du printemps 1911 un petit atelier d'impression sur tissu. A comprehensive work which covers the design & manufacture of all manner of bodies for motor vehicles. From 2 seater open sports cars to prison vans. Superbly illustrated. 2350 grams.         TE DEUM LAUDAMUS

      Offenbach a Main: Ernst Engel, 1924. One of 100 copies in full vellum with a hand-painted person with scarf on the upper board (perhaps an angel with bobbed hair -- very 1920's). A beautifully printed "Te Deum", in black and red, and with blue and red initials. The bookplate of the "Typographic Library and Museum of the American Type Founders Company" is on the pastedown with shelf location for the book, and a small slip with 72/100 and the shelf no. glued to the top of the pastedown with the shelf number visible as a tab at the top of the textblock. Two blank leaves at the rear are creased.

      Paris: Plon-Nourrit et Cie, 1924. FIRST EDITION. No. 9 OF 50 COPIES of the deluxe edition on Chine, from a total edition of 1,700 copies (and 62 hors commerce copies). This is a beautifully bound, deluxe presentation copy of a work the "Encyclopedia Judaica" calls "an enthusiastic survey of Zionism's spiritual and messianic roots." The title here is a phrase from the liturgies of Passover and Yom Kippur familiar to all members of the Jewish faith, a prayer/wish to celebrate the holy day "next year in Jerusalem," returning to the Promised Land. Here, however, the brothers Tharaud disparage "those Western Jews who were happy to dispatch their [Eastern European] brethren to a Promised Land with which they themselves felt only nominal links." (Ency. Judaica) The French novelists and essayists Jérôme (1874-1953) and Jean (1877-1952) Tharaud wrote both fiction and non-fiction on Jewish themes, seeking to inform Gentile readers about Judaism, Jewish traditions, and life in Eastern European ghettoes. Their view of Zionism changed in the decade after this work was published, and they eventually embraced the idea of enforced separation of Jewish and gentile societies. Our skilled and imaginative binder Kauffmann established premises in Paris in 1875. François Horclois, son of binder Jules Horclois, married Kauffmann's daughter, joined the firm, and succeeded his father-in-law after Kauffmann's death in 1929. François continued to operate the bindery until 1961, when he died at age 82. The example of his work pictured by Duncan & De Bartha (p. 96) displays the distinctive marbling and modelling techniques used here to such pleasing effect.. 198 x 130 mm.
