        Abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz.

5, rue Lemercier, Paris Henry Goulet (1924) - Small quarto. (28)ff. One of 495 numbered copies on vergé anglais out of a total edition of 520; this copy is unnumbered. Twenty-six superb pochoir plates by French artist Lucien Laforge. Laforge was born in 1889, the son of a miniature painter and a violinist. Torn between music and drawing, he ultimately settled on a career in design and illustration. Beginning in 1910, he worked for a succession of left-leaning and anarchist newspapers, allowing him to express his own political views. His illustration work for books was done before and after World War I, which he strongly objected to as an adamant pacifist. Laforge's innovative style, influenced by Art Nouveau, is as well suited to the whimsical nature of this children's title as it is to his more political work. For each letter of the alphabet, Laforge accompanies the example with a bright and imaginative illustration in rich color. From "Alchimiste" to "Zèbre," the words are pulled from a variety of sources, both mundane and fantastic. The "Jardinier" watering his cabbages and the regal "Reine" reside alongside the beautiful Turkish "Odalisque" and the dream-like "Fantasmagorie." Inventive and charming, Laforge's effort results in one of the finest French ABC books of the twentieth century. This rare 1924 printing is specially bound in quarter dark purple morocco over marbled boards with gilt title to spine and patterned endpapers designed by Laforge. Original wrappers bound in. Very fine. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

When We Very Were Young; Winnie-the-Pooh; Now We Are Six; The House at Pooh Corner

London: Methuen and Co., 1924, 1926, 1927, 1928. 8vo, x, 100 pp.; xi, 158 pp.; x, 103 pp.; and xi, 178 pp. In blue, green, red, and rose cloth, covers stamped and panelled in gilt, backstrips gilt lettered. Top edges gilt. Spine panels uniformly very slightly aged, endpapers and pastedowns with the expected minor offsetting from flaps. The dust-jacket flaps of When We Were Very Young have a small section at the top front and back neatly trimmed and the front panel bears an unobtrusive 2-inch tear without loss. An unsophisticated set that has been together since publication to the present day. Enclosed in a new cloth box. First editions, very rare first state of When We Were Very Young with blank end-papers and no IX in the preliminary pagination. One of the half dozen most famous childrenâ??s books in the English language; complete sets in original condition as issued from the day of publication are as desirable as they are rare. Milneâ??s tales and Shepardâ??s immortal illustrations are iconic and referenced in every book about 20th-century childrenâ??s books. C.R. Milne (Christopher Robin) did not live easily with his fame and retired to Dartmouth in Devon where he happily ran The Harbour Bookshop for many years. Likewise, Shepard grew to resent â??that silly old bearâ? and felt that these illustrations overshadowed his other work.

LA RIVOLUZIONE LIBERALE. Saggio sulla lotta politica in Italia (Invio).

Cappelli 1924 E.O. Un volume (15x23 cm) di (4) - 162 - (2) pagine. Cartonato muto moderno, copertine della brossura originale conservate all'interno. INVIO autografo di Gobetti alla pagina di titolo, datato 3 gennaio 1925, al prof. La Cava. Firma di Gobetti anche alla pagina successiva della Proprietà letteraria. Qualche sottolineatura a matita. Ottime condizioni.

Erich Itor Kahn (1905-1956) studied at the Hoch'sches Konservatorium in Frankfurt. An early champion of Schoenberg, he gave the world premiere of the composer's piano piece op. 33a; he also studied the present op. 23 cycle early on. The notational corrections are of particular interest. The waltz concluding the cycle, first sketched in 1921, is considered the earliest example of Schoenbergian twelve-note composition.

THE TRANSATLANTIC REVIEW -- the Complete Run of 12 Issues

1924. Paris: Transatlantic Review Co. | or, London: Duckworth & Co. | or, New York: Thomas Seltzer, January through December 1924. Original blue and cream wrappers. This is the complete run of the landmark literary magazine of the expatriate community of Paris -- founded and edited by Ford Madox Ford, and publishing new works by the likes of Ernest Hemingway, Joseph Conrad, Gertrude Stein, e.e. cummings, James Joyce, William Carlos Williams, Ezra Pound and others. Despite the periodical's short life, it had a profound influence upon the development of modern literature. It was published simultaneously in Paris and London, and a bit later in New York (and in fact this group includes copies from all three cities). Condition of the twelve issues is generally near-fine (some wear to the yapped wrapper edges as one would expect, slightly more wear to the Oct and Nov issues, one spine darkened).~Examples of the works first appearing in these twelve issues:~"The Nature of a Crime," by Conrad & Ford~"Mamalujo" (a first fragment of Finnegan's Wake) by Joyce.~"Indian Camp," "The Doctor and the Doctor's Wife" and "Cross-Country Snow" by Hemingway (who also served as guest editor for one issue~"The Making of Americans" by Stein~"Some Do Not" by Ford~a Shakespeare & Co. ad for "Ulysses," indicating that copies cannot be sent to the U.K. or U.S.~Further details available.
